Movie Review – Disney’s Holes (2017) Article by: Jazelle https://jazelle20001115.wixsite.com/journal

Disney are famous for their family fun movies

Is it fate, or is it a curse? Can you determine your own destiny? These are the central questions of Hole, a film by Andrew Davis. The Yelnats family has suffered due to a great curse for five hundred years, or so they thought. Certainly, the youngest member of the family, Stanley Yelnats (protagonist) accepted that his life would be constrained in ways he wished he didn't have to accept. But sometimes, when he was daydreaming, he wondered if his great-great-great… grandpa hadn’t made that fateful mistake, would things be different?

One day on the way home from school, a particularly important event happened to Stanley. Later, he thought it was when the god of luck had first smiled upon him. Which leads him to investigate his family's awful past. Stanley's journey in search of the truth leads him down a hard road. During an especially difficult period, Stanley stumbles upon, or more accurately, has a pair of shoes fall into his lap, while walking under the highway. Surprised by this entirely unexpected good fortune, which he takes as a gift from the God of Luck, he experiences a moment of ecstasy. But then, just a few seconds later, he is accused of stealing the shoes and sent to a reform camp for teens. Life was hard in the reform camp where the incarcerated teens are made to dig holes every day. They dig tens of thousands of holes. They dig until they -

- can dig no more. The only good Stanley finds in the camp was some kids who he befriends. The most important of these is a little boy, Zero (relationship character). What Stanley didn’t know at the time is that Zero is the descendant of the witch who cursed his family so long ago. Ultimately, it will be Zero who tells Stanley the truth of the curse, and breaks it. The film's antagonist is the guardian. She compels the teenagers to dig in the sand, a Sisyphean task that is presented simply as a form of punishment, because she seeks a buried treasure. By facing his own destiny, Stanley is able to expose her plot and free everyone.

Stanley carries an exhausted Zero

This movie is structured along the lines of the Hollywood formula, but at the same time, adds its own original elements. Concepts like eternity, or reincarnation, are wisely employed, which triggers the audience to think about their lives. Holes could be seen as paying tribute to ancient Chinese philosophy, or as combining elements of east and west to tell a unique story.

“Maybe my mom'll stop drinkin' and my dad'll come back.”

This is one of the few Disney movies I have seen that plunged me into that rare, giddy state of pleasurable confusion, of not knowing what would happen next. I normally associate this state with the reading and movie-going experiences of my own childhood. Holes is a fable about the past and the way it affects the present lives of at least three people.
