Why did you decide to get into real estate?
One day while I was in my college apartment and trying to decide what I wanted to do after I graduate in a few months, my roommate at the time was watching “Million Dollar Listing New York.” I really fell in love with the lifestyle of the agents on the show and decided I immediately wanted a career in real estate. I signed up for an online real estate course the next day.
What do you do to stay grounded/centered/sane?
I wake up early on Saturday mornings to recap my week and write out where I want my life and business to go. This helps me relax and take things one day at a time.
How did your challenges shape who you are today?
They showed me that with hard work you can overcome any obstacle. Back in high school, I graduated with a very low GPA, which led to me going to community college. This was mainly because I missed a majority of my senior year by almost going blind in one of my eyes. All of my high school peers laughed at me for going to a community college, but I used this challenge as fuel to get my grades up and eventually transfer to Michigan State University and graduate from the Eli Broad College of Business. This shaped me by demonstrating that by having a goal and a strong work ethic, your life can change for the better in a short period of time.
What drives or motivates you?
My youngest sister. I realize that she imitates a lot of decisions that I make in life, and she’s always super happy for my success. A lot of what I do is for her — I want to be an example for her to achieve the goals she has set.
Who has helped you get where you are today?
My mom, dad and aunt. Without them, I probably wouldn’t even be a real estate agent — they supported my decision 100%. They also helped me out a lot financially in those first couple of years while I was still trying to figure out how to get clients to pay the bills. I am truly blessed and grateful to have them in my life.
As a 2021 Best-in-Class honoree, what are your words of wisdom for the next generation of real estate agents?
The wisdom I would give is for them to really understand that this is truly a communication and networking business. It took me nearly five years to realize this.
