MESSAGE FROM RABBI BRYAN WEXLER
“My heart is in the East and I am at the edge of the West”
Medieval Jewish Poet, Yehudah HaLevi, wrote these words some time in the early 12th century. While his sentiment is even older than the words themselves, it certainly rings true today. Our hearts are always with our brothers and sisters in Israel, however, they are all the more so over the past 200+ days since October 7th. Our hearts break as more than 130 Israeli hostages remain in Gaza and the war rages on. Our hearts fear for the safety and security of Israel as Iran looms as a significant threat. Our hearts long for a day when displaced Israelis will be able to return home. Our hearts yearn for physical and emotional healing for our brothers and sisters in Israel. Our hearts are in the East.
But our hearts are not just in the East. They are also in the West, here in the U.S. And here too, they ache. They ache for the current situation on college campuses around our country. They worry about the rise of antisemitism around the globe. They are concerned about the future not only of our people, but of humanity as a whole. 200+ days of heartache, concern, and fear.
At the same time, as we count the days from October 7th, we are also now counting The Omer, the fortynine day period between Passover and Shavuot. This counting feels different. As we count up to Shavuot, also known as Z’man Matan Torahteinu, the Time of the Giving of the Torah, we search for hope; hope for Israel, hope for peace, hope for a Jewish future free of war, bloodshed, hatred and bigotry. Where is that hope to be found today? It starts with the Torah. As depicted so beautifully on the Sukkat Sholom Mural in our Gottschalk Family Sukkah, the first letter of the Torah is BET and the last letter of the Torah is LAMED. Reverse
the order and, it spells the word LEV which means HEART. The Torah begins and ends (and is based on) the heart—love, kindness, and goodness. As we celebrate receiving the Torah on Shavuot, we recognize the importance of the heart. The heart gives us life just as the Torah gives life and sustains us as a people. As we count the days, both from October 7th and to the holiday of Shavuot, we bring our whole hearts forward, hearts that are both broken and whole, both full of concern and hope, and we share them with one another.
The Torah is our foundation for our hearts filled with hope, and as we count the Omer this year, we find a tremendous sense of hope as begin to wrapup the school year and celebrate the learning and the HEARTS of all of our students. We recently celebrated our graduating HaMakom High School seniors. Over the next number of weeks, we will be celebrating many special learning milestones with our ECEC, Religious School, and Hebrew High School students and their families. In the Eric B. Jacobs Early Childhood Education Center, we will have our 4’s Revue (graduation for our four-yearolds). In the Rabbi Albert and Sarah Lewis Religious School we had our Bet (2nd grade) Siyyum HaSefer, and will have our Gimmel (3rd grade) Consecration and our Vav (6th grade) Promotion to our High School program. And finally, on Shavuot itself, we will celebrate Confirmation with our 10th Grade Class of 5784. Our Confirmation students have begun preparing to lead services on the first day of Shavuot (June 12th) and share their thoughts about God and their Jewish identities with the congregation. We are SO proud of all of our students that will be celebrating special milestones

as we conclude the school year, and we wish a hearty mazal tov to them and their families.
At our closing gathering on our last day of Religious School, our Director of Congregational Learning, Alex Weinberg, gave out bracelets to all of our students which have an Israeli flag on them and say: “libi b’mizrah.” Watching our students wear these bracelets as we all sang Hatikvah together filled my heart with hope.
As we approach Shavuot, with our hearts in Israel, may the heart of our people remain strong and united while also being healed. May the Torah that we learn, teach, and live by come from the heart and be filled with kindness and love. And finally, may we strive to remain Am Ehad b’Lev Ehad, one people, with one heart, for all the days to come.

Preparations for membership renewal are underway. Please keep your eyes open for information regarding our online membership renewal process for the 2024-2025/5785 year, which is slated to be rolled out on or about Wednesday, May 15. For those who prefer a hard copy of the membership renewal packet, please email membership@tbsonline.org to request your copy.
And as we look towards the year ahead, I reflect on our growth and accomplishments of this past year. We have added to our amazing staff. Our membership and school registrations continue to grow, as well as our Plus Givers and endowments. We have conducted basic life support and security training for staff, faculty, and congregants. We have made additional building improvements, information technology upgrades, and enhancements to our security protocols including the formalization of our relationship with JFED Security. I am sure each of these areas of our synagogue life, including all the wonderful programming that we continuously provide, will continue to flourish in the coming year.
