MESSAGE FROM CANTOR JEN COHEN Miracle of Miracles Every September, as we start the school year, iShir, TBS’s choir of passionate 2nd-6th-graders, starts clamoring to sing “Al HaNissim – For the Miracles.” How it warms this cantor’s heart to have students pleading to sing a prayer straight from the siddur! And one that is not part of the liturgy until Hanukkah, no less! The upbeat tune we sing is one many of you have heard, and it’s what the kids on the internet call “a bop.” One of those melodies that feels like it’s been around since Moses himself, the tune entered our musical lexicon in 1974 as an entry in Israel’s Chassidic Song Festival, written by Dov Frimer, who later became a Jerusalem attorney! (And if you enjoy learning about the origins of many of our favorite melodies, join me for TBS Lunch and Learn in January and February!) Back to Hanukkah. “For the miracles, for the deliverance, for the victories, for the triumphs, and for the battles You fought for our ancestors in those days and at this time.” These are the words of Al HaNissim that we insert into the Amidah three times a day on Hanukkah and Purim and, more recently Yom Haatzmaut, as well as adding it in Birkat Hamazon, the blessing after meals. Placed in the Modim – gratitude – paragraph of the Amidah, this line center military victories, a subject heartbreakingly top of mind for us right now. And it begins with miracles. But the Al HaNissim prayer isn’t the only time our liturgy reminds us about miracles. Every day, three times a day, in that same Modim paragraph, we say “… ve’al nisekha shebe’khol yom imanu” – “for your miracles that accompany us each day.” It’s so subtle, and, being used to reciting that paragraph extra quickly, it’s easy to let it just slip by. Have you caught 2

it? Have you thought about your everyday miracles while reciting it? The birth of a baby, the healing of a friend facing illness, finding love, having access to clean water, a moment in the warm sun, noticing a perfect full moon – do we recognize the miracles in our daily lives? Holidays come along to act as our everyday lives writ large. They give us the opportunity to celebrate, eat our favorite foods, sing our favorite Jewish songs and prayers, and notice so much to be grateful for. We and iShir can chant Al HaNissim and sing that “Nissim” loudly and proudly, over and over this Hanukkah, (and we can see the nes gadol on our dreidel!) and perhaps that can help us notice the nissim in our lives – and liturgy – every day. On a holiday that welcomes us to give thanks, praise God, and light candles to brighten the winter darkness, let’s allow Al HaNissim to open our eyes to the miracles around us every day.

MESSAGE FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR RON SAFIER As we approach the end of the calendar year, many individuals consider year-end charitable contributions, not only in the spirit of giving, but to help offset tax liability. As always, your donations to TBS are greatly appreciated and are used in many ways to help support programming, scholarships, security initiatives, building improvements and general operating expenses to name a few. If you would like to donate to one or more of our funds, please visit: tbsonline.og/donate. In addition to donating to one of our many funds, some congregants choose to pay their dues in full or pay down their building fund balance to help offset their tax liability. Others choose to donate their required minimum distribution from their IRA to TBS. Some congregants choose to donate to TBS through the contribution of stock. This is a very attractive year-end tax-savings strategy and donating appreciated stock can increase your tax benefit. If you donate an appreciated security that you have owned for longer than one year, you will avoid paying the capital gains on the sale. In addition, the gifted stock allows you to potentially deduct the entire value of the donation on your tax return. Stock donations can also be applied towards various areas of financial obligation to the synagogue. An end-of-year charitable contribution to TBS is a wonderful opportunity for all of us to lessen our tax burden and provide a valuable donation to our shul. If you cannot give today, please consider a gift for the future through the Life & Legacy program. If you would like to learn more about Life & Legacy, or how you can donate to TBS through the contribution of stock, please contact me at rons@tbsonline.org or (856) 751-6663 x218. For tax advice, please consult your tax advisor.

Tuesday Night Talmud-Masekhet Sanhedrin: Capital Punishment and Compassion Led by Rabbi Lindemann and Rabbi Katz

The Talmud seeks to limit capital punishment, but even when the Sanhedrin issues a death sentence, there are rules for reconsideration up to the last minute and efforts to make execution as humane as possible. Many corollary questions are also considered: K’vod HaMeyt (The honor of the deceased) and comforting mourners; potential conflicting concerns of the community and the court; permissibility of preemptive strikes that may take a life; and whether one may sacrifice his or her own life for others. Jurisprudence and Jewish prudence come together to create a study in capital punishment and compassion. 2023-24 BOARD OF DIRECTORS The TBS Board is an important part of our synagogue community. Members of the Board serve as the leaders of our committees and groups, bringing to life many of the programs and services described in this booklet. Board members also set TBS policy, work on strategic planning, and safeguard our finances. Always willing to lend a hand, Board members jump in whenever needed to sell raffle tickets, greet at services, or welcome a new TBS family. Our lay leaders work in a beautiful partnership with our clergy and staff, together creating a warm and engaging synagogue community of which we are very proud.
