MESSAGE FROM CLERGY Keeping the Candle Lit Rabbi Bryan Wexler

A story told of a rabbi who once went to a shoemaker in his town in Europe to have a pair of shoes repaired. Since it was already nearing the end of the day, he felt that the lack of light might cause the shoemaker difficulty. The rabbi therefore suggested that the shoemaker wait until the next day to begin the job. “Do not despair” came the shoemakers reply. “I’ll just light a candle. As long as the candle is lit, it is still possible to do the repairs.” Inspired by these words, the rabbi returned to his students and repeated. “As long as a candle is lit, it is still possible to do the repairs.” He continued: “Judaism compares the human soul to a candle, and the shoemaker has given us a beautiful parable. One must never resign oneself to spiritual despair. No matter how dark the night gets, we must light a candle, the candle of our soul, to illuminate the way.” I thought about this teaching a lot throughout Hanukkah during which we added more light each night of the holiday. Now, as we enter the secular new year of 2024, I again find myself reflecting on this lesson. The year 2023 was another difficult year; especially the last three months. On October 7th, the lives of all Jews everywhere were forever shaken. Hamas, evil personified, extinguished the light created by so many souls of our brothers and sisters in Israel. The last three months have been filled with darkness as the war continues in Gaza, we continue to fight to bring the remaining hostages homes, and we wrestle with a myriad of emotions including anger, grief, fear, and uncertainty. As the story begins, it feels all too dark right now to move forward. And yet, that’s what we have done and will continue to do; standing with our brothers and sisters in Israel,

2

fighting antisemitism, and seeking to repair an alltoo broken world with the light of our faith, our care, and our love. We light the candles of our souls each day through education, connection, and growth in the classrooms of our Eric B. Jacobs Early Childhood Education Center, our Rabbi Albert and Sarah Lewis Religious School, and our HaMakom/Kesher High School. We bring light to the darkness when we come together as a community on Shabbat and holidays, when we participate in synagogue events and programs, and when we support one another as one large TBS family. And we light a candle when we reach out to help others in our South Jersey community, in Israel, and around the world. And that is what we will do again at this year’s TBS Mitzvah Day, on Sunday, January 14th. A special thank you to our Social Action Chair, Naomi Mirowitz, and to our Mitzvah Day Chair, Jeannie Teller, for their tireless effort in once again putting together a day of service that will bring hundreds in our TBS community together to work hand-inhand on dozens of projects and initiatives bringing support, dignity, and love to so many people in need. I hope you will join us on the Sunday of MLK weekend as we bring our collective light together to make a big difference. Speaking of MLK and thinking about light, it was Martin Luther King Jr. himself who famously said in 1957: “darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that.” And so, as we enter the New Year of 2024, among our resolutions, may we resolve to light the candle of our souls. For “as long as a candle is lit, it is still possible to do repairs.” May our light help to bring healing to Israel, to our people, and to a world in need of repair.

MESSAGE FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR RON SAFIER Relationships are vital when it comes to strong security protocols, especially during times like this when antisemitism is on the rise. There are numerous aspects to our security measures, for both cyber security and physical security, and the relationships that we have with local law enforcement, certain vendors, and our neighbors, are all part of our security plan. Yes, we have all the necessary “target hardening” components in place – the bollards and planters, the interior and exterior cameras, the protective film on glass doors and windows, the door entry system, etc. But relationships are also extremely important. Our I.T. services provider, OmniComp, has been instrumental in not only assisting with our physical security measures such as our camera system and door entry system, but also with our cyber security measures including the implementation of various I.T. protocols and cutting-edge technology to mitigate any potential fraud attempts against the synagogue. The Cherry Hill Police Department, and JFED Security, have been critical to our security plan by not only providing us with the necessary security personnel that are needed here on a daily basis, in addition to Bob, but by also providing daily patrols and assisting with various trainings and drills to prepare our faculty, staff, and congregation for action that needs to be taken during worst case scenarios. And we also have plans in place with Chabad next door to provide shelter should we ever need to evacuate the building. Our community relationships are strong and critical. I recently wrote about the importance of continuing to show up for Israel during this current crisis, and the importance of continuing to show up for TBS to help fund basic operations. You can do both by contributing to the TBS Stands with Israel Fund to show our unwavering support for Israel, and by contributing to the TBS Security Fund to help offset our security costs. Regardless of which fund you choose, we are grateful. Both are especially important right now. Wishing you a safe and happy new year. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, you can always reach out to me at rons@tbsonline.org or (856) 751-6663 x218

Tuesday Night Talmud-Masekhet Sanhedrin: Capital Punishment and Compassion Led by Rabbi Lindemann and Rabbi Katz

The Talmud seeks to limit capital punishment, but even when the Sanhedrin issues a death sentence, there are rules for reconsideration up to the last minute and efforts to make execution as humane as possible. Many corollary questions are also considered: K’vod HaMeyt (The honor of the deceased) and comforting mourners; potential conflicting concerns of the community and the court; permissibility of preemptive strikes that may take a life; and whether one may sacrifice his or her own life for others. Jurisprudence and Jewish prudence come together to create a study in capital punishment and compassion. OUR CONGREGATIONAL SCHOOLS What makes our congregational schools so special? Learning in our TBS community! The students in our congregational schools learn in hands-on environments where they grow together in our shul. Our classrooms are the learning spaces that create a living laboratory for students and families to learn to actively immerse in congregational life. Ultimately, the goal is for our families lives to be enriched through the learning and experiences we have created in our kehillah kedoshah—sacred community. We are excited for many new opportunities in 2023-24 for our families to learn and grow together! 2023-24 BOARD OF DIRECTORS

The TBS Board is an important part of our synagogue community. Members of the Board serve as the leaders of our committees and groups, bringing to life many of the programs and services described in this booklet. Board members also set TBS policy, work on strategic planning, and safeguard our finances. Always willing to lend a hand, Board members jump in whenever needed to sell raffle tickets, greet at services, or welcome a new TBS family. Our lay leaders work in a beautiful partnership with our clergy and staff, together creating a warm and engaging synagogue community of which we are very proud.
