NEXT YEAR IN JERUSALEM!

For as long as my in-laws hosted the Passover Seder my husband was cast in the role of Aaron. Mark sounded the shofar as the Israelites traveled to the promised land. For many years, our “promised land” was the basement at 1802 Morris Drive, draped in white sheets, and where pillows served as seats. We read the Maxwell House version of the Passover Haggadah. Our youngest asked the four questions, children excitedly searched for the afikomen, and we sang Dayenu with ruah.
Times have changed. The Seder now takes place in our home around the dining room table. The kids have grown. We added an orange to our seder plate. The beautifully designed TBS Haggadot Sholom has brought new light to the holiday. While we evolve, many of our traditions remain the same. There is always a seat for Elijah and mom-mom Syl’s salmon croquettes. There will always be lots of singing – on and off key, and we will forever say: “Next year in Jerusalem”.
These four words have never been more important. Since October 7th, remembering our journey to freedom resonates a bit more today, as we await the return of our brothers and sisters being held hostage in Gaza. Many of our TBS community members
have recently travelled to Israel and have been able bear witness and be reminded of the strength and resilience that lies at Israel’s core.
In the book The Genius of Israel, Dan Senor and Saul Singer explain that Israelis instinctively understand something that is lost in other countries. Israelis are not alone. They have each other. “Large tight families, multiple strong friendship networks and a sense of national belonging and connection through sacrifice and strife”. Israel is about the WE, a country that fosters being a part of something bigger than oneself. Much of its success and the happiness of its people is attributable to the groups that form. These hevre are united in the common purpose of togetherness, of helping one another, like the bonds of friendship and community that we at TBS aim to create. We share similar values through our traditions, prayer, and community service.
So, as you begin to rid your house of hametz, and prepare to host or attend a Seder with your hevre, take a moment to reflect on how we purposefully can support one another, including our fellow Jews in Israel. And proudly proclaim, Next Year in Jerusalem!

SELLING YOUR HAMETZ - MIKHIRAT HAMETZ
Although we symbolically destroy some hametz that we have in our house the morning before the first Seder, we are not required to destroy all of the hametz in our possession. We are required to remove it from public view in the home, but we can still store it out of sight (in boxes or a storage room that would be sealed off throughout Passover). Even though we are permitted to store it in our home we must give up possession of this hametz throughout the days of Passover.
