Call and Response

What do you think about when you hear the shofar? What does its sound summon for you? Each year, the first few times I hear the shofar, I am brought back to when I was a child, sitting in services with my family at the Adath Jeshurun Congregation in Minneapolis. As we continue to sound the shofar throughout the month of Elul and Rosh Hashanah,

This year the shofar calls us to recognize just how much has changed since last Rosh Hashanah. The October 7 terrorist attacks in Israel and the ongoing war, in addition to the rising antisemitism in the US and around the world, have impacted all of us. We know that our world has changed, and we are figuring out how to describe what exactly this means. What should we hold on to, and what should we let go. How do we move forward? This is where our response to the call of the shofar comes in. Our challenge today is at once similar to challenges our people have faced at different points

Message from Executive Director, Ron Safier

Hope everyone had a wonderful summer!

We are in full swing with preparing for the 2024-2025/5785 programmatic year. The High Holy Days will soon be upon us and will include options for you and your family to participate in our services and experiences both inperson and virtually. Family services will be held in the tent, and extra security personnel will be present to ensure that we have a safe environment for both indoor and outdoor services. Our investment in technology will ensure that we stay connected with those who choose to participate in services via livestream. An email with information about accessing the livestream will be sent as we get closer to the High Holy Days. Please remember to submit your membership renewal forms and seating/livestream requests ASAP if you have not done so already. The High Holy Day packets, which will include tickets, parking passes, service times, and more, are slated for distribution the week of September 16 for pickup in the TBS office and mailing the week of September 23. Please help us save money on postage by picking up your High Holy Day packets when they are made available. We look forward to seeing you soon, and an early Shanah Tovah U’Metukah! If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, you can always reach out to me at rons@ tbsonline.org or (856) 751-6663 x218.

Message from President Alison Shapiro

As the sun began to set upon my first trip to Israel, Rabbi Peltz asked: “How do we keep the fire burning?” Like a pot of water coming to a boil, how was I to maintain the spirit of Jerusalem in my daily life once I left the Holy Land? I have wrestled with this question ever since.

The sparks in Israel ignited my desire to connect more deeply with my Jewish self and to dedicate myself to making a meaningful contribution. In our lives, there are a number of times we are called to action. In Jerusalem, I was called. I felt something so strongly that I was compelled to do something. Over the years since, I rallied friends and colleagues, and we acted to improve our Jewish community. My Jewish journey has been transformative, allowing for a level of gratitude and understanding I never knew was possible. It was not always easy. Life gets in the way, and there is a struggle among priorities. The excitement, anger, novelty -- the feelings that stirred the commitment and initial dedication -- may wane over time. But, like our ancestors affirming Hineni, we continue the work. It allows us to form critical relationships within the Jewish community and deploy our core values, our Jewish values.

The atrocities of October 7th in Israel seem to be one of those times we are called to action – individually and collectively. Our community has come together in so many wonderful ways. With antisemitism on the rise, Jews are looking for community, a safe sanctuary. College Hillels and Chabads are reporting record levels of student engagement. Our congregation is growing, and our programming has further encouraged Jewish pride and Israel education at all levels. So, how does this speak to you?

"You are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are you free to abandon it.” ~ Pirkei Avot, Rabbi Tarfon/ Ethics of our Fathers.

There are so many opportunities for engagement. Have you found your place? The world needs more compassionate, dedicated leaders. Where can you find dedication or more likely, re-dedication? Recall those feelings that ignited your interest, your connection, your desire to participate and act.

As we enter the month of Elul and have time for reflection, I encourage you to take a moment and pause. Take time to listen. Seek purpose. It is so important we hear the calling, over the hustle and noise in our everyday lives, don’t miss it.

Tuesday Night Talmud-Sanhedrin: Justice in This World and The Next

Led by Rabbi Lindemann and Rabbi Katz

Is the section of Sanhedrin a logical continuation of the themes in the tractate? Or does this material constitute something totally different - an addendum that stands on its own? Clearly, it raises some fascinating topics: resurrection, messianic redemption, and the world to come. How were these ideas understood at the time of the Talmud? How should we understand them today? The conclusion of the Sanhedrin also raises questions about the intersection of politics and religion, as well as the nexus of communal and individual responsibility. This is a deep dive into philosophy and theology. Registration Fee $75, includes texts and materials – Contact Michelle Shmuts at MichelleS@tbsonline.org to register.

Our Congregational Schools

What makes our congregational schools so special? Learning in our TBS community!

The students in our congregational schools learn in hands-on environments where they grow together in our shul forming strong Jewish identities and connection to Israel. From davening together in engaging tefillot, services, to exciting family programs, and dynamic classroom experiences, our students develop the skills, vocabulary and motivation to actively engage in all areas of Jewish living: the synagogue, community, and home. Our classrooms are the learning spaces that create a living laboratory for students and families to learn to actively immerse in congregational life. Ultimately, the goal is for our families lives to be enriched through the learning and experiences we have created in our kehillah kedoshah—sacred community. We are excited for many new opportunities in 2024-25 for our families to learn and grow together! For more information about any of our programs, please reach out to Alex Weinberg, Director of Congregational Learning, at alexw@tbsonline.org.

Jodi Ziets, Chairperson - Hesed means kindness. The mission of Temple Beth Sholom’s Hesed Committee is to provide members of the TBS family with short-

term assistance and support in times of need. All matters are treated with complete confidentiality. Hesed committee members are available for regular phone calls and check-ins and can also help by getting groceries and medications. If you should need the assistance of the Hesed Committee, please contact Clergy Assistant, Michelle Shmuts, at 856-7516663.

TBS Sisterhood – Caring Sisters

Carol Orwitz and Harriet Baker, Co-Chairs - Following an outpouring of interest in our January 2018 Pink Shabbat, this group was created to offer a network of support for TBS breast cancer patients and survivors. We combine social gatherings and education programs focused on breast cancer health and wellness. Caring Sisters is generously supported by the Cary Massa Fund at TBS.

Temple Beth Sholom strives to create strong, long-lasting relationships with its students, even after they have graduated from high school and are pursuing a higher education. TBS wants to be there for your children as they begin to choose their own Jewish path by keeping in touch. We can help them feel connected to TBS by having the synagogue send packages for the High Holy Days and Purim along with a warm note from clergy.

Once again, thank you to the Shapiro Family Fund for their commitment to this program and enabling us to provide our students with these packages free of charge. Sign up before September 6, 2024. For more information, visit tbsonline.org/collegeconnection/

Yom

Yom Teruah-A Tense Day

There’s an English grammar joke that says: “The Past, Present, and Future walked into a bar. It was tense.”

Rosh Hashanah -- Yom Teruah -- is a tense day because Yom Teruah -the Day of Sounding -- is, all at once, about the past, the present, and the future as we each ask ourselves:

What have I done? What am I doing? What will I do?

For more than three thousand years, the blasts of the Shofar have been our great, collective asking of these questions.

The familiar single Tekiah blast is the wake-up call to the present moment. “What am I doing?” Tekiah! Awaken me to my best self so that I can see what matters most. The Tekiah is the sounding of an alarm to get our attention, so that we might refocus our lives on what is most important.

Then there is the wailing of Shevarim that reflects on the pain of the past. It is the wordless answer to the question, “What have I done?” Shevarim! Three broken blasts that echo the cries of the heart, giving voice to the suffering and sadness that we each carry from our mistakes of the past year.

Finally, there are the nine fractured bleats of Teruah that hint of the future. This final call has been interpreted in various ways, but one interpretation that resonates with me is that it represents exaltation; sounding like unrestrained sounds of laughter that are the expression of our deepest, purest joy once we have given up the pain of the past that confines us. “What will I do?” Teruah! Teruah can represent hope for the future; hope for tomorrow.

Before sounding the shofar on Rosh Hashanah, the Ba’al Tekiah (shofar blower) recites a beraha (blessing) which ends with the following words: lishmoa kol shofar- Blessed are You, O God who commands us to listen to the voice of the shofar. At first, the mitzvah seems straightforward. We are commanded to hear the sounds of the shofar. However, I think the blessing may be suggesting something even more. To truly hear the shofar blasts, to listen to the sounds of the shofar, we must also listen to our hearts.

What have I done? What am I doing? What will I do?

These questions resonate deep within our souls, and this year in particular, they feel especially pertinent for our communal existence as a Jewish people as well. When we think about how are lives were impacted this past year, October 7th is surely on our minds. And again, tense plays a role. There was the Israel and Judaism that we knew before October 7th, the Israel and the Judaism that we find today and the Israel and the Judaism that we hope for the future. And right now, it all feels quite tense. As we listen to the shofar this Elul and this Rosh Hashanah, we will hear the broken and the whole together. We will hear the past, the present, and the potential future in dialogue with one another.

What have we done? What are we doing? What will we do?

In the face of the inTENS(E)ity of these questions, may we reflect on the past year, the current moment, and our hopes for the future. Moreover, may we have the courage to not only answer thoughtfully but to ready ourselves to act boldly for our future selves and people. So that when we hear the Tekiah Gedolah—the great blast, we will feel it in our hearts and be inspired to move forward with a renewed sense of strength, courage, and purpose into the year of 5785.

How Should We Commemorate October 7?

Our Jewish tradition hardwires times throughout the year to help us remember individual and communal losses. We mark the yahrzeit, the anniversary of the death of a loved one, each year by saying kaddish, lighting a candle and giving tzedakah. We also have Yizkor. Four times a year, on Yom Kippur, Shemini Atzeret, Pesah, and Shavuot we come together to recall our loved ones. As a community, we have days like Tisha B’Av to remember tragic times throughout history, Yom HaShoah, and in Israel there is Yom HaZikaron, Israel’s memorial day for fallen soldiers and victims of terror. Over the course of the year, we have many opportunities to remember.

So, as we approach the one year anniversary of Hamas’ brutal terror attack on Israel, we prepare to commemorate another difficult day for our people. But when should it be? The answer is not so simple. On the secular calendar, it happened on October 7, and this has become how we refer to it. But in the Hebrew calendar the date was the 22nd of Tishrei, a Jewish holiday. But here it gets even more complicated. In Israel, the 22nd of Tishrei is the combined holiday of Shemini Atzeret and Simhat Torah. But outside of Israel, where we have two holy days instead of one, the 22nd of Tishrei was Shemini Atzeret, and the following day, the 23rd of Tishrei, was Simhat Torah. Make sense?

In short, the question is whether to commemorate what happened on the secular date of October 7 or the Hebrew date of the 22nd of Tishrei. The policy of the government of Israel is to mark important days by the Hebrew calendar. But those days cannot fall on holidays. That’s why back in March the Knessset voted to establish a National Day of Remembrance to commemorate the October 7 massacre

Shema Koleinu – Hear

Our Voices

Through the 25 hours of Yom Kippur, the heart of the services is the Selihot and Viddui – forgiveness and confession – section. We repeat it throughout the evening and day, even beginning our entire High Holiday season, weeks prior, devoting an entire evening to these ideas at our Selihot service.

Over the course of that section of tefilot – prayers – we ask God to forgive us before we even come to the confession of our sins. One tefilah stands out as a moment of real vulnerability: Shema Koleinu. Beginning, “Hear our voice, God, be kind, and have compassion for us,” we go on to ask in increasingly poignant ways that God not cast us away, no matter what we are about to confess.

Throughout the day at TBS, the music of this prayer changes – sometimes a passionate cry, sometimes the quietest of duets, sometimes a melody for everyone to join in on. The final section – “Do not abandon us, God” – so awful to think about that, no matter the tune that came before, we chant this line under our breath.”

In every weekday Amidah – every week, all year –we ask God to listen to our requests. The stakes feel higher at this time of year, sure, but that imperative, demanding verb remains. Hear us. Listen to us. And what responsibility do we have to model what we’re asking of God?

Beloved theologian Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks of Great Britain (1948-2020) said this about listening: “If I were asked how to find God, I would say, Learn to listen. Listen to the song of the universe in the call of birds, the rustle of trees, the crash and heave of the waves. Listen to the poetry of prayer, the music of the Psalms. Listen deeply to those you love and who love you.” Then he acknowledged what a challenge that part can be.

• Can this be a year when we hear others and listen more deeply?

• How can you be a better listener this year?

• How can you tune in more consciously to High Holy Day services this October? Can you dive into our beautiful mahzor – prayerbook – and use the commentary to help you listen and really hear something new?

And, as a final plug, please join us on September 28 at Congregation Beth El, when the clergy, choirs, and congregants of our two shuls join as a community to both listen and be heard.

Ashrei HaAm Yod’ei Teruah : Happy are the People who Know the Call of the Shofar

Have you ever tried to sound the shofar? It is really hard! To make matters worse, if you are nervous or have a dry mouth when you try to sound the shofar, it is almost impossible. In fact, legend has it that in 1967 when Rabbi Shlomo Goren, the chief rabbi of the Israeli Defense Forces, accompanied the paratroopers to the Kotel in Jerusalem, he tried to sound the shofar but was so overwhelmed in the

moment that he couldn’t make a sound. Imagine it—for thousands of years we waited for that moment to stand in front of the Kotel, and his shofar was quiet. Thankfully, a soldier with him who was a trumpet player was able to make a strong Tekiah and the rest is our history (immortalized in the pictures taken by photographer David Rubinger).

Ashrei

HaAm Yod’ei Teruah

Happy are the people who know the call of the shofar

It has become a tradition and honor for students in the Rabbi Albert and Sarah Lewis Religious School, Kellman Brown Academy (and sometimes even in our Eric B. Jacobs Early Childhood Education Center) to work with me throughout the month of Elul, the final month in the Jewish year, to learn how to sound the shofar for Rosh Hashanah. This amazing crew of students practices each week so when it is time for the shofar service on Rosh Hashanah our students are confident and make strong shofar blasts. Students as young as six with mighty lungs make these sounds with every ounce of breath that they have. (My favorite are the children who lift their shoulders to their ears as they blow into the shofar with every ounce of strength they can muster—sounding the shofar isn’t easy!)

Most of our Ba’ale Tekiah, start out sounding like Rabbi Goren with squeaks, whooshes, and an occasional snort. After weeks, and for many, years of practice, they are able to make mighty blasts. However, more important than the notes themselves, our students spend time learning about the power of the shofar and their responsibility of being a Ba’al Tekiah. The shofar, as the Rambam teaches, is like an alarm, challenging us to wake up as we work to make the year ahead better than the current one. When we hear the shofar, it is our challenge to learn and grow as we prepare for the year ahead. Our students help all of our community fulfill the mitzvah of hearing the shofar notes.

YOM KIPPUR WORD SCRAMBLE

UNSCRAMBLE

NETNTOAME

FVOSGENIRSE

The list goes on to include more verbal transgressions: denial, deceit, gossip, cynicism, and condescension. There are plenty of hateful words in our world. Hate speech has become all too common—in politics, in classrooms, around the college campus, on the playing field. “Forgive us, pardon us, grant us atonement.”

It’s not the words we need to unscramble, rather it’s the underlying impulses and feelings they represent. And even after we unscramble that, we need to find ways to undo the impact of what was said. We must heal the hurt inflicted, the damage done by all those words. That’s a critical part of Atonement.

The power of words is an important theme of Yom Kippur. It all begins with Kol Nidre—All Vows—an acknowledgement of all the promises and oaths we have made and failed to fulfill. How much disappointment and pain have been created by words spoken too hastily or not taken seriously? How much regret is expressed in that prayer alone?

Then there is Vidui. Consider how many of our confessions focus on words in just the first set of Al Heyt litany.

For the sin we have committed against You by idle chatter.

For the sin we have committed against You by the way we talk.

For the sin we have committed against You by empty confessions.

For the sin we have committed against You through foul speech.

For the sin we have committed against You through foolish talk.

That, too, can begin with words—an apology, simply (or not so simply) saying “I’m sorry.” In the liturgy of Yom Kippur, we do that together. It is much more difficult to speak those words directly to those who need to hear them. But if Yom Kippur does not impel us to do that, it is not really a Day of Atonement.

There is a fascinating teaching about the spoken word which goes back to the story of creation. After, we are told that God created the entire world by the words “Let there be,” the text elaborates on the creation of the first Human Being. “God breathed into Adam’s nostrils the breath of life, and Adam became a living being.” (Genesis 2:7) The Targum (the ancient Aramaic translation and interpretation of Torah) renders the phrase “became a living being” as “became a speaking spirit.” It is the power of speech that makes human beings different from animals. Our capacity to use words comes directly from God. And, just as God created the world with words, we, too, can create a whole world by the words we speak. We can create a world of caring, compassion, and kindness. We can fashion meaningful friendships and loving relationships.

By unscrambling the way we use our words, we begin to solve the puzzle of how we can become better human beings. That is an important message of Yom Kippur.

And that brings me back to Kol Nidre. The text is in Aramaic, because that was the language that people used in everyday speech. Hebrew was the language of prayer, but if Kol Nidre had been in Hebrew, people would not have understood it. It would have required translation, and the content was thought to be too important to be recited without understanding. Today, even a translation into English is not sufficient. It requires interpretation to unscramble the meaning. Here’s one you may remember. It comes from our previous prayer book and was authored by Rabbi Harold Kushner. I confess I miss reading it each year.

All vows, promises, and commitments made in Your presenceMay we be given the strength to keep them

Our vows to ourselves, commitments to self-discipline May we take our own lives seriously enough to heed them, Honoring our resolves in the way we eat and drink, The way we work and rest, the way we regulate our lives.

Commitments made to loved ones and friends, Pledges made to worthwhile causesHelp us to become as compassionate and generous As we sought to be at those noble moments.

The promises we made to worship and to studyWe meant them when we made them, But the distractions were many, and our wills were weak. This time, may we be strong enough; May our better selves prevail.

Promises made in the synagogue by young people Who glimpsed what life as Jews might hold in store for them –May devotion and idealism be with them in all their days.

Our marriage vows – may they endure Through dark days and through dull days, Through fatigue and through frustrationMay our love prove strong and our faith firm.

O God, we meant the promises we made To You, to each other, and to ourselves, Even as we mean the vows we silently make tonight.

Reach down to us as we strive to reach up toward You; Give us the strength and self-respect, the fidelity and vision, To grow to become the people we have sworn to be.

All worthy vows and commitments which we make From this Yom Kippur until the nextMay we be faithful enough and firm enough to keep them.

2024-25 Board of Directors

The TBS Board is an important part of our synagogue community. Members of the Board serve as the leaders of our committees and groups, bringing to life many of the programs and services described in this booklet. Board members also set TBS policy, work on strategic planning, and safeguard our finances. Always willing to lend a hand, Board members jump in whenever needed to sell raffle tickets, greet at services, or welcome a new TBS family. Our lay leaders work in a beautiful partnership with our clergy and staff, together creating a warm and engaging synagogue community of which we are very proud.
