COMMUNITY Life

When I was in high school, I spent a lot of time in my synagogue’s library. I’ve always loved wandering among the books. To this day, when I need a little break, I’ll step into our Rabbi Lindemann Lifelong Learning Center and peruse the books that our librarian Minna Siegel curates for us. As a teen, I was hungry for books on Judaism. I wanted to gain a deeper understanding of our tradition and figure out what it wanted of me. One day, as I browsed the titles, my eyes fell on a book called I and Thou by Martin Buber. I checked it out, not knowing exactly what I was in for.
I didn’t know it at the time, but Martin Buber was a fascinating figure. Born in Vienna in 1878, he came from a family of observant Jews but left to study philosophy at a secular university. He became a professor at the University of Frankfurt in 1930 but, as the Nazi’s cracked down on Jews, he decided to leave in 1938 to become a professor at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, where he would live for the rest of his life. One of the major themes of Buber’s work was the holiness of relationships. I and Thou, published in 1923, is his most well-known work. In it, he argues that human life finds its meaningfulness in relationships. Not only that, but it is through our relationships with others that we ultimately build a relationship with God.
It was heady stuff for a teenager, and I admit that I didn’t understand much of it when I read it then. This summer, in honor of the 100th anniversary of its publication, I revisited my copy of I and Thou (not from the synagogue library, I had since purchased my own). It is striking how contemporary its lessons are for us today.
That’s because so many people are experiencing a deep sense of loneliness in our world. This is part of the reason for the rising rates of mental illness and alcohol and drug dependency. Technology connects us to the world more than ever before, but our connections are thinner. Social media exacerbates many of these challenges.
US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy this year called loneliness and isolation an epidemic. He wrote, “Our epidemic of loneliness and isolation has been an underappreciated public health crisis that has harmed individual and societal health. Our relationships are a source of healing and well-being hiding in plain sight.”
Though they are 100 years apart, Dr. Murthy and Dr. Buber are on the same page. Relationships with family, with friends, and being part of a community, are essential for our physical, mental and spiritual health.
This is why study after study has shown that participation in a religious community generally correlates with better health outcomes and longer life, higher levels of generosity, and more stable families. In our increasingly individualistic society, being a part of something that is bigger than oneself, a community, a people, that has responsibilities to each other, and the world gives us purpose and meaning.
This is what Judaism and Jewish community has done for our people for millennia, and it is our sacred responsibility to carry it forward. As the Talmud teaches, “All of Israel is responsible for one another.” Our TBS family strives to live this teaching, and to provide diverse connection points to help all members of our community know that they are seen, they matter, and that they belong to a community that cares.
As you can read in our president Alison Shapiro’s article, “belonging” is one of the pillars of our new strategic plan. We recognize the need to do the best we can to help our large shul feel small for everyone in our TBS family. But building a relationship is not a one way street. It takes both sides to reach out, to take that step towards each other, for a relationship to grow.
As we celebrate Rosh Hashanah this year, I encourage you to take that step. Come to a Shabbat or holiday service, a class, a program, daily minyan, a social event. Sign up for an upcoming TBS trip, volunteer to cook for those in in need, join a committee or a group, or schedule a meeting with our clergy, staff, or lay leaders. Feeling a sense of belonging as part of our Beit Sholom family is where it all begins. You are an essential part of our community and can contribute to our vibrancy with your own special gifts, talents, and skills. This year, we invite you to reach out and let us know how you would like to deepen your relationships at TBS.
100 years ago, Martin Buber taught us about the potential for holiness in relationships. Today, let us work to realize his lesson together, by continuing to build our kehillah kedoshah, our holy community of TBS, one relationship at a time.
services in the tent during the High Holy Days the past two years were so well received that we decided to bring it back to give everyone a little breathing room, literally and figuratively. We are very excited for the High Holy Days this year which will once again include options for you and your family to participate in our services and experiences both in-person and virtually. Extra security personnel will be present to ensure that we have a safe environment for both indoor and outdoor services. And our investment in technology will ensure that we stay connected with those who choose to participate in services via livestream. An email with information about accessing the livestream will be sent as we get closer to the High Holy Days. Please remember to submit your member ship renewal forms and seating/lives tream requests ASAP if you have not done so already. Hope you are having a wonderful summer, we look forward to seeing you soon, and an early nah Tovah U’Metukah!

Belonging is a fundamental human need. Finding a spiritual home like TBS, where we feel accepted and understood, is a beautiful starting point. However, true growth and fulfillment come from moving beyond mere belonging to actively cultivating an environment that allows us to become our best selves. At TBS we foster a culture of community, life long-learning, and self-discovery. In the last year, our TBS community looked inward to strategically plan for the years ahead. How can we continue to operate from a position of strength in an everchanging world? How can we engage members spiritually, emotionally, and educationally? How can we maintain our commitment to Israel when she needs us now, more than ever?
Our clergy provides us with a spiritual community essential to our core values. Here at TBS, we pride ourselves on being a synagogue that prioritizes educational opportunities for all members. A place where we can explore the difficult ethical questions, find support through challenging times and find joy during life’s most precious moments. Our genuine commitment to learning and personal development is vital. As you look at the vast number of opportunities in this book, you will find choices allowing every individual the chance to evolve and thrive within the TBS community.
On Rosh Hashanah, and throughout the coming year, you will hear more about our strategic plan – the importance of Belonging, Becoming, and Building. Belonging to TBS is just the beginning. As we strive to improve, we must continue to provide a warm, welcoming, and sacred community. By fostering this culture of lifelong learning and encouraging self-discovery, we empower ourselves and each other to grow and thrive in 5784, and for many years to come.

At difficult moments we turn to community and prayer. If you are praying for restored health for yourself or a loved one, if you have recently suffered a loss, if you are experiencing a particular difficulty or in need of comfort and support, or if you are simply interested in an hour of community, song, prayer, and uplift, this service is for you. Join Rabbi Wexler for a soulful and uplifting one-hour healing service preceding certain holidays as these times can be difficult for those who find themselves experiencing pain and sadness. Through prayer, meditation, sharing, and singing, we will strive to find healing, strength, and hope in one another.

The Talmud seeks to limit capital punishment, but even when the Sanhedrin issues a death sentence, there are rules for reconsideration up to the last minute and efforts to make execution as humane as possible. Many corollary questions are also considered: K’vod HaMeyt (The honor of the deceased) and comforting mourners; potential conflicting concerns of the community and the court; permissibility of preemptive strikes that may take a life; and whether one may sacrifice his or her own life for others.

The Little Liar is a powerful story that moves from a small village in Greece during the Holocaust, to America, where the intertwined lives of three survivors are forever changed by the perils of deception and the grace of redemption. The book can be read as a moving parable that explores honesty, survival, revenge and devotion.
The Little Liar is Mitch Albom at his very best. Narrated by the voice of Truth itself, it is a timeless story about the harm we inflict with our deceits, and the power of love to ultimately redeem us.
Mitch has chosen TBS as the first stop on his book tour and will be speaking about his latest novel a week before its official release. Mitch will be with us as part of the Katz JCC Arts, Books and Culture Festival.
Books will be available for purchase before and following the presentation. november 12 at 10am

What makes our congregational schools so special? Learning in our TBS community!
The students in our congregational schools learn in hands-on environments where they grow together in our shul. From davening together in engaging tefillot, services, to exciting family programs, and dynamic classroom experiences, our students develop the skills, vocabulary and motivation to actively engage in all areas of Jewish living: the synagogue, community and home. Our classrooms are the learning spaces that create a living laboratory for students and families to learn to actively immerse in congregational life. Ultimately, the goal is for our families lives to be enriched through the learning and experiences we have created in our kehillah kedoshah—sacred community. We are excited for many new opportunities in 2023-24 for our families to learn and grow together!
For more information about any of our programs, please reach out to Alex Weinberg, Director of Congregational Learning, at alexw@tbsonline.org.

The committee also continues to engage with other TBS groups to partner on social action initiatives.
To help ensure that the JFCS Betsy and Peter Fischer Food Pantries have enough supplies to help those who are hungry in our community, our congregants will be asked to contribute kosher, non-perishable food to our collection. This year there will be school-wide food collection where each month specific classes will be asked to bring in one or more of the designated foods that are critically needed from an assigned list. Our schools work together to reach our goal of fighting hunger.
The Social Action Committee will once again be partnering with our congregational schools to help brighten the holiday season for families in need by participating in JFCS’s Adopt-a-Family program.
This program, led by Stu Sklar, provides complete meals for those in need in the South Jersey area. More than 1200 kosher meals are delivered annually to the JFCS and distributed through their network of food pantries.

The TBS Social Advocacy Committee exists to educate, engage, and empower members of the TBS community to advocate and act in support of humanitarian issues that are aligned with Jewish values. Its priority areas are: (1) gun safety, (2) racial justice, (3) anti-semitism, and (4) support for refugees and displaced persons.
In partnership with the Philadelphia chapter of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), the TBS Social Advocacy Committee is offering a new program for members of the congregation. This five-meeting series will offer a safe and engaging space to explore issues of anti-Semitism in our community, the country, and around the world. Participants will have time to share and process their thoughts and their own experiences with antiSemitism, and will gain valuable guidance, strategies, and tools for having conversations with others – both Jewish and non-Jewish – about the topic.

It’s one thing to read about the history of the Civil Rights movement, and quite another to visit the very places where the movement was born. Join us for an impactful three-day tour meant to educate our community and honor the thousands of citizens who fought and sacrificed for racial freedom and justice. may 5 - may 7, 2024.

Hesed means kindness. The mission of Temple Beth Sholom’s Hesed Committee is to provide members of the TBS family with short-term assistance and support in times of need. All matters are treated with complete confidentiality. Hesed committee members are available for regular phone calls and check-ins and can also help by getting groceries and medications. If you should need the assistance of the Hesed Committee, please contact Clergy Assistant, Laura Padersky, at 856-751-6663.

Following an outpouring of interest in our January 2018 Pink Shabbat, this group was created to offer a network of support for TBS breast cancer patients and survivors. We combine social gatherings and education programs focused on breast cancer health and wellness. Caring Sisters is generously supported by the Cary Massa Fund at TBS.

In today’s world, it is incumbent upon us as Jews now more than ever to take firm steps to help make our community more sustainable. In the past we have worked hard to obtain the Hazon Seal of Sustainability, which is awarded yearly. We also created a bike team, which was a great way to stay healthy, reduce carbon emissions, and cycle for worthy causes. This year, we will be working closely with Hazon on their new initiative-the Jewish Climate Leadership Council. The committee will pick one or two projects for the synagogue to focus on and then spearhead the efforts. We welcome everyone to come share their ideas and passion for protecting our earth.

We are delighted to welcome Rabbi Alicia Rothamel to our TBS family as our new Rabbinic intern. Rabbi Rothamel is a fourth-year rabbinical student, completing a Master’s Degree in Jewish Thought. During her time at JTS, Alicia completed her first unit of clinical pastoral education (CPE) and served as a chaplain intern at the T’Shuvah Center, a Jewish recovery home and community for addicts of all kinds. Additionally, Alicia has worked as the Rosh Hinukh at Ramah Day Camp in Elkins Park, connecting 3rd through 6th grade students to Judaism and the State of Israel. In the fall of 2022, Alicia spent a semester studying in Jerusalem with rabbinical students from Europe and North America, learning new customs, teachings, and deepening her connection to the Land.
Prior to JTS, Alicia completed her BA in Jewish Studies at Temple University, where she earned two Samuel and Esther Goldin Awards for academic excellence. While completing her degree, she was an intern at the Anti-Defamation League’s Philadelphia office. She also attended the Conservative Yeshiva’s Summer Program in Jerusalem and has participated in the Adult Programming Committee at Congregation Beth Zion Beth Israel.
Before her acceptance to Rabbinical School, Alicia taught 5th grade Judaica at Adath Emanu-El Synagogue in Mount Laurel, New Jersey. She also worked as the Human Resources Manager for an international software company in Philadelphia. In her free time, she enjoys reading, journaling, traveling and spending time with her adult children.
Alicia is very excited about working at Temple Beth Sholom as a Rabbinic Intern. She is looking forward to expanding her knowledge with practical experence as well as supporting this amazing community.

The TBS Board is an important part of our synagogue community. Members of the Board serve as the leaders of our committees and groups, bringing to life many of the programs and services described in this booklet. Board members also set TBS policy, work on strategic planning, and safeguard our finances. Always willing to lend a hand, Board members jump in whenever needed to sell raffle tickets, greet at services, or welcome a new TBS family. Our lay leaders work in a beautiful partnership with our clergy and staff, together creating a warm and engaging synagogue community of which we are very proud.
