s we dive into the summer issue, I am reminded of the profound journey we have shared over the past 19 years in celebrating remarkable women. This edition emphasizes the importance of authenticity—cherishing moments with family and friends while nurturing our relationship with ourselves.

In my multiple roles as publisher, psychotherapist/professor and as the 2025 Executive Chair for the annual Making Strides event benefiting the American Cancer Society, I am acutely aware of the challenges many women face. It is essential to pause and appreciate the present, for it is within these moments that our lives gain meaning. Our cover features the inspiring Elizabeth Ricci, a mother, attorney, and advocate for social justice, whose resilience and captivating story will undoubtedly resonate with you.

Reflecting on the women who have shaped my life, I think of my mother, an immigrant who faced generational trauma and poverty. Though she never attained citizenship, she instilled in me the values of kindness, empathy, and the importance of helping others, regardless of one's circumstances. I also honor my Aunt Lou, whose fierce spirit and zest for life shone brightly until her battle with cancer. Her legacy of love and adventure continues to inspire me.

Surrounded by a circle of remarkable friends, mentors, and community leaders, I am continually reminded of the power of connection and the joy of living fully. As we navigate the complexities of life, let us focus on what truly matters, for tomorrow is never guaranteed.

In the words of Maya Angelou, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

Typography is another quiet storyteller. The right font can catch a reader’s eye, pull them into a feature, or lend weight to a quote that deserves to linger. It’s not just about what looks good—it’s about what feels right. Every issue is a puzzle I get to solve, and the result is something I hope inspires, delights, and represents the women of this city with the elegance and strength they deserve.

People often ask me which cover is my favorite, and the truth is—I don’t have just one. Each time I design, I pour everything I have into it. Every issue reflects where I am creatively in that moment, and when I finish, that becomes my favorite... until the next one.

ne of the most important parts of my role as Creative Director is being able to capture the vision of our publisher, Dr. Michelle Mitcham. It’s always the first step in the design process—listening, interpreting, and aligning with the direction she sees for each issue. Over the years, we’ve built a strong collaborative rhythm that has allowed us to refine the magazine’s visual voice while staying true to its mission. Together, we’ve brought each issue to life with intention and heart.

As Tallahassee Woman Magazine celebrates 19 years, I’m filled with gratitude—not just for how far we’ve come, but for the role I’ve been able to play in shaping what this magazine feels like. Since 2019, I’ve had the honor of designing 35 issues. That’s 35 chances to tell a story—not just with words, but with color, typography, texture, and tone.

Each season, I approach the design process with intention. I begin by thinking about what the season evokes—whether it’s the warmth and richness of fall, the bold energy of summer, or the soft renewal of spring. The cover sets the tone. It’s the handshake, the first impression, the visual heartbeat of what’s inside. I work to craft a color palette that doesn’t just live on the cover, but flows through every page—connecting stories, spotlights, and advertisements in a seamless and beautiful way.

But here’s the part I want more women in Tallahassee to hear: this magazine isn’t just a platform for stories—it’s a space for you. If you're a woman who owns a business, who leads in your field, who is building something remarkable, then you belong in these pages. Why? Because this magazine is held in the hands of thousands of women across our city. Women who shop, support, and share. Sunset Citrus Salmon Salad

elcome to the sensual side of summer salads—where velvety butter lettuce meets smoky grilled salmon, and every bite bursts with sun-ripened flavor. This isn’t your average leafy mix. It’s a lush, color-drenched masterpiece layered with sweet orange slices, earthy roasted beets, buttery avocado, and a seductive kiss of thinly sliced red onion. Slivered Marcona almonds add a delicate crunch, while a homemade citrus-poppy seed vinaigrette ties it all together with just the right amount of zing. Light, luxe, and unapologetically fresh—this is the kind of salad that turns heads and starts conversations. Perfect for two, especially when paired with chilled rosé and a view of the sea.

INGREDIENTS For the Salad: • 1 head butter lettuce, gently torn • 6 oz grilled salmon (hot or chilled), flaked or sliced • 1 small avocado, sliced • 1 small roasted beet, sliced thin • ½ orange, peeled and segmented • ¼ small red onion, very thinly sliced • 2 tbsp slivered Marcona almonds

For the Dressing: • 2 tbsp fresh orange juice • 1 tbsp lemon juice • 2 tsp honey or agave • ½ tsp Dijon mustard • 2 tsp poppy seeds • 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil • Pinch of sea salt and cracked black pepper

Instructions: • In a small bowl or jar, whisk together orange juice, lemon juice, honey, mustard, and poppy seeds. Slowly drizzle in olive oil while whisking until emulsified. Season with salt and pepper.

• Layer the butter lettuce in shallow bowls or plates. Arrange avocado, beets, orange slices, and red onion on top.

• Add flaked salmon and sprinkle with Marcona almonds.

• Drizzle generously with the citrus-poppy seed dressing.

• Serve immediately—preferably outdoors, under a golden sky.

“My Omnilocks”

A Celebration of Hair, Heritage, and Heart By TWM Staff

W

hat started as a mother-daughter conversation has blossomed into a beautiful board book that is now shaping the confidence of little girls everywhere. My Omnilocks: Hair with Endless Looks is the debut children’s book by journalist and community leader Shonda Knight—a vibrant, rhyming journey that celebrates the beauty, versatility, and power of brown girls’ hair.

Inspired by her daughter Zya, Knight created My Omnilocks after a moment many moms of girls with textured hair will understand. Zya wanted her hair straightened for a special event, but the weather and activity level would’ve made it short-lived. Noticing Zya’s disappointment, Knight reminded her daughter that her hair is magical—it can curl, braid, twist, loc, puff, and more. That pep talk turned into pride, and from that spark, My Omnilocks was born.

With bold cutouts and engaging rhymes, the book is designed for children ages 0–5—those vital years when 90% of brain development occurs, including early self-esteem. It’s more than a book; it’s an affirmation in little hands.

Knight, a veteran journalist and now Executive Director of Community and Media Relations for the Leon County Sheriff’s Office, has spent her career telling stories that matter.

She laughed, cried, said yes to things she never thought she’d be bold enough to do, and learned that purpose doesn’t always come with a plan. And Savannah says that sometimes, “the best moments are the ones that catch you completely off guard and that’s where the growth happens.”

At work, Savannah is the Creative Director at Current Agency. She is a storyteller, designer, and strategist, someone who helps clients bring their visions to life in a way that feels clear, true, and even a little magical. Whether it’s branding, content, or big-picture thinking, she’s always asking: How can this connect with people in a meaningful way?

“The way something looks and feels changes how people experience it,” she says. “When it’s done well, it builds trust, connection, and community.

Strength, for Savannah, is a legacy. Her maternal grandmother, Honey, faced tragedy after tragedy but never gave up. She showed her that pain and joy can exist in the same space, and that we can keep building a beautiful life, no matter what. “If we can somehow find the same strength that Honey had, we can keep going, too. Throughout her life, the support of other women has been transformative. “Some of my biggest shifts and healing moments happened because of women who challenged me, encouraged me, and stood by me when it mattered the most. There’s something powerful about being surrounded by women who don’t see you as competition, but as a community.”

And her advice to young women with big dreams?

“Don’t wait until you feel ready. Start now. Unsure-figuring-it-out-as-you-go? Start anyway.

Give yourself permission to dream big, ask for help, take up space, and celebrate how far you’ve come. You’re doing better than you think.”

STEPHANIE JONES Stephanie Jones’ journey has always been guided by her Christian faith and the strength of her family. Raised in rural Georgia as the oldest of three, and the only girl, she grew up determined to make her family proud, define her own path, and inspire those around her to do the same.

From an early age, Stephanie’s parents instilled values of hard work, perseverance, and integrity. These values carried her as she left home to attend Thomas Vocational College, eventually launching a career that would lead her to serve in several Florida state agencies and the City of Tallahassee.

Though her path wasn’t always clear, it was the wisdom and guidance of strong women, mentors, supervisors, and colleagues, that helped light the way.

Whether she’s visiting community organizations or helping families navigate crisis, Virginia is the bridge between need and support. “People often don’t know where to turn,” she says. “I get to help connect them, with compassion and respect.”

Today, Stephanie serves as Executive Assistant to Sheriff Walter McNeil at the Leon County Sheriff’s Office. In this role, she is the linchpin for internal and external communication, providing essential support to the Sheriff and executive staff to ensure the agency runs smoothly. “It’s a responsibility I don’t take lightly,” she says. “It’s an honor to serve the people in our community.”

While there were many inspirational moments that helped define Stephanie’s career path and build her confidence, none would be possible without her faith and family. Her advice to girls and women is, “let us continue to love and encourage one another, straighten the crown of another woman; helping her, helps each other.”

Due to recent changes in her life, Viriginia realized that if she didn’t have the strong, supportive, investing, prayer warrior, and benevolent women around her she would not be where she is today. She said, “Women need other women in their lives who think they are amazing. There should be no competition, hate, or jealousy. There should only be love, support, and the constant reminder that ‘you got this’!”

VIRGINIA KYLLONEN Virginia Kyllonen is a North Florida original with a big laugh, an even bigger heart, and a lifelong love of learning. That spark first showed up in fourth grade, when a school history essay earned her second place in a 4-H/Tropicana Speech contest, and the award was a 2+2 college scholarship. She went on to become a proud Florida State University graduate, double majoring in accounting and marketing to honor both her own ambition and her dad’s Seminole pride.

Today, Virginia serves as a Human Services Coordinator with the City of Tallahassee, where she manages contracts, monitors grant-funded agencies, and

Personally, I’ve seen how women rally around each other to uplift with actions and words of encouragement.”

When asked about traditions in her family Dinah shared that she values that her family gets together every year, recognizing the value of touching bases as they’ve gotten older as individuals with aging parents. She loves, “getting wisdom [from them] on how to navigate life and what to do when certain situation arises.”

Dinah offers excellent advice to young women, including, “It’s okay to not be okay, but it’s not okay to stay that way”, “the ‘why’ is important but so is ‘what’, ‘who’, ‘when’, and ‘where’”, and “Faith and work make actions happen; you have to do the work.”

I

recently sat down with Elizabeth in the sitting area of her northeast Tallahassee law office to chat for this magazine.

Her space mirrors her composed personality and is decorated with only a few of her many awards.

Though she's a familiar face in national media—from CNN to Fox and NewsMax—she describes herself as an introvert, and I can see why. She's a good listener and does not waste or mince words. She demonstrates quiet confidence that comes from genuine expertise rather than a need for attention.

She welcomed me dressed in a modest matching green knit pant set, complemented by antique amethyst jewelry she bought at a local silent charity auction. She was cradling her late mother's white chihuahua named Frida, whose pink-painted claws and matching blep would warm the coldest heart.

Her regular media appearances as a news commentator aren't sought for personal recognition but emerge naturally from her role as an expert in immigration law.

Elizabeth's personality perfectly suits her field, where fairness and impartiality are essential when American businesses’ success and people's lives are at stake. Her expertise extends beyond individual immigration cases to helping companies maintain proper employment verification, ensuring businesses can hire legally while protecting themselves from potential penalties, while also assisting advanced STEM degree holders whose work is in the national interest to sponsor themselves for residency.

Elizabeth's path to success showcases the American dream at its finest. Born in Brooklyn to a working-class Catholic family and raised primarily by her mother, grandmother, and Spanish-speaking grandfather, she learned the value of hard work from her mom, who commuted daily from New Jersey to Manhattan as a legal secretary. This start, combined with her stint in the Peace Corps as a Small Business Development Volunteer in Guatemala, where she improved her Spanish-speaking skills, gave Elizabeth a deep understanding of the challenges many immigrant and working families face—knowledge that would later inform her compassionate approach to immigration law and her steadfast focus on giving back to our country and community.

The transformation from a young woman who once stood at the Governors Club entrance thinking, "I cannot afford to eat here," with just eight dollars in her purse, to becoming a nationally recognized attorney is an inspiration. Today, not only is she a member of that same private club, but her law partner husband Neil Rambana, who immigrated from Jamaica in 1979, serves on its board as its next president.

She's now an adjunct professor at Florida State University College of Law, a law enforcement academy trainer, and a renowned attorney who provides pro bono counsel to foreign-born U.S. military veterans who struggle to obtain American citizenship. "When I was discharged from the U.S. Army, I discovered I wasn't actually a citizen despite many promises. The military wouldn't help me, but Elizabeth took my case without charging a penny," recalls Michael Michelis, a Greek-born 80-year-old veteran with whom she has become close friends. "She not only relent-

lessly secured my citizenship but also took me back to Greece for the first time since I was three years old. Standing on the same soil as my ancestors, as an American citizen at last—that moment changed my life. Elizabeth fights for people like me when no one else will. I call her my Wonder Woman.”

A fan of Mark Twain, Elizabeth is fond of his quote, "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness." She and her family delivered gauze and other medical supplies to a family friend recovering from surgery in Cuba because the hospital in Havana lacked even the most basic supplies.

While preparing for the trip, her daughter Belén asked why the people they were helping couldn't simply order supplies on Amazon, which led Elizabeth to explain that most Cubans didn't have internet access—a revealing moment of cultural awareness for her then 14-year-old. They also brought art supplies to a sociocultural art project for marginalized children in Garabato. She took her daughters, Paloma and Belén—whom the couple affectionately calls their "Rasta Pastas" as a playful nod to their Italian and Jamaican heritage—to Japan with the Girl Scouts and ensured both had traveled independently on international service project trips before they turned 15.

When her daughter Paloma was diagnosed at birth with Peters Anomaly, a rare eye condition requiring numerous surgeries, Elizabeth applied her courage and problem-solving skills to navigate doctors, therapists, and special equipment. She also shares her knowledge with other families facing similar challenges. As she notes, "There is not a book on how to do that."

Her approach to balancing professional demands with family needs and commitments has also allowed her to be present for what she holds dear. Elizabeth credits working with Neil as a key advantage that provided flexibility to attend school events, lead her daughter's Girl Scout troop, fundraise for the Zonta Club, and participate in Leader-

ship Tallahassee, in addition to her service as a Presidential appointee to the Selective Service Board.

Elizabeth has a passion for the arts that she credits as part of her overall well-being. She has performed on stage at the Monticello Opera House, Theatre Tallahassee, and at the Ruby Diamond Auditorium, where she shared the stage with Jane Fonda and Rosie Perez. Young Actors Theatre named her a Leading Lady for her community contributions. Her professional and personal lives intersect beautifully in this area, as she regularly secures visas for actors and artists, including obtaining a visa for Wil Johnson from House of the Dragon to perform at Southern Shakespeare Company's 2025 Shakespeare in the Park. She gave a TEDx talk about how we can change our communities with art, expression, and performance.

She serves on the Tallahassee Hispanic Theatre Board and previously served on the Council on Culture and Arts. She is learning to paint and recently took a class with one of the original Florida Highwaymen. She is also an amateur photographer, having one of her black-and-white nature photos selected and displayed at the Tallahassee International Airport gallery. She spends most weekends doing some kind of project, like recently assembling a nautical clock or redecorating one of her handmade dollhouses.

Learning Italian is an ongoing venture that she works on every day.

After losing her two closest friends around the age of 50, she says, "Do what you love.

Don't worry about what could go wrong.

Worrying is not a plan. Instead, plan to enjoy every day, do meaningful work, and show up for the ones you love."

Friends describe her as their "constant north star"—a faithful friend who remains steadfast when life becomes tumultuous.

Perhaps most telling is longtime friend Joanne Gallagher's assessment of what makes Elizabeth stand out as a professional woman and business owner in Tallahassee. Gallagher, CEO and founder of SOAR, says: "I have learned that there are very few people who truly have your back. She has my back, so I have hers. That is a great approach to a successful career."

This simple but powerful philosophy—loyalty, mutual support, and genuine connection—forms the cornerstone of Elizabeth's success. Her business achievements are remarkable, but it's her deep community roots, willingness to help others, and steadfast loyalty that have truly cemented her place as one of Tallahassee's most respected professionals.

Elizabeth's ability to balance her many roles seems almost superhuman. Between managing a thriving law practice, raising Paloma and Belén, supporting Neil both professionally and personally, and still finding time to provide pro bono services and volunteer, she somehow makes it all look effortless.

Her story demonstrates that true success isn't measured solely by professional accomplishments but by the lives touched and communities strengthened along the way.

Girl, let’s talk about the death of DEI…

t seems like a day doesn’t go by without another business announcing the end of its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, leaving women and minorities to navigate a shifting landscape. The political pressure to roll back DEI programs has led to decreased institutional support for underrepresented groups, compounding existing disparities in hiring, promotion, and workplace inclusion. At the same time, professionals employed in the DEI space are facing their own job losses, with limited guidance on what comes next. Those challenges are especially difficult in a city like Tallahassee that is so heavily dependent on government and non-profit organizations.

Impact on Women and Minorities Programs focused on mentorship, equitable hiring practices, leadership development, and valid reporting channels for discrimination are being gutted. Without formal DEI initiatives, opportunities for women and minorities become more uneven. These traditionally underrepresented groups do not typically have legacy or influential connections helping them gain access to jobs and business opportunities. This has led to a resurgence of the very exclusionary practices that created the need for DEI programs in the first place.

Cuts to DEI funding have caused significant job losses. Many DEI professionals, including program directors, trainers, and analysts, are finding themselves unemployed with limited roles to transition into. Since DEI positions are often not easily transferable to other departments, laid-off workers must retrain or rebrand their skills for adjacent fields like human resources, organizational development, or corporate social responsibility. However, the need tallahassee woman | 34 | june • july 2025

for those jobs is not expected to match the glut of workers facing sudden unemployment through no fault of their own. Unfortunately, when those people cannot find gainful employment, they end up on the public dole, allowing for-profit companies to pass the negative financial effects of their management decisions onto us taxpayers.

Alternatives and Grassroots Strategies In response to the demise of formal DEI programs, some organizations are going under the radar, pursuing less conspicuous, value-driven strategies to promote inclusion: Employee Resource Groups (ERGs): Many companies are allowing ERGs, such as groups for women, LGBTQ+ employees, and racial minorities, to continue independently. This creates informal networks of support and advocacy.

Inclusive Leadership Training: Some organizations are quietly embedding inclusive leadership principles into their broader management training by avoiding politically charged language while retaining the core benefits of DEI. PROTECTING YOUR BOUNDARIES: Saying NO to People Pleasing

oundaries set limits and define what is acceptable in our relationships with friends, family, coworkers and significant others.

Have you ever said “yes” when every fiber of your being wanted to say “no”? If so, you’re not alone. Many of us—especially women, caregivers, empaths, and those in helping professions— are socialized to prioritize others’ needs above our own. It feels safer. It feels easier. But over time, the cost of constantly pleasing others is steep: burnout, resentment, emotional exhaustion, and disconnection from your true self.

Why We People Please

Protecting Your Peace is a Daily Practice

Check in with your body before saying “yes.” Tension, tightness, or hesitation are clues.

Pause before committing. Give yourself permission to say, “Let me think about that and get back to you.”

Start with small boundary-setting wins and build confidence over time.

Seek support. A therapist, coach, or grounded friend can help you untangle guilt from your growth.

People pleasing often stems from childhood experiences, trauma, or environments where love and approval were conditional.

Maybe you learned early on that saying “no” led to punishment, shame, or rejection. Or perhaps, keeping the peace in your household meant constantly monitoring and meeting others’ needs.

People pleasing can also be rooted in:

• Fear of conflict or abandonment • Desire for validation and acceptance • Low self-worth or self-trust • Overidentifying with being "the strong one," "the helper," or "the fixer" • The Power of NO

Saying “no” is not selfish. It’s sacred. Every time you say “no” to something misaligned, you are saying “yes” to your peace, your values, your time, and your energy.

Here’s the truth: you are not responsible for other people’s emotions. You are responsible for honoring your own boundaries with grace and clarity.

Boundaries are not walls; they are bridges to healthier relationships—rooted in honesty, respect, and self-awareness.

1. “Thanks for thinking of me! I won’t be able to commit this time.”

2. “That doesn’t work for me right now, but I hope it goes well.”

3. “I’m focusing on my well-being and need to say no.”

4. “I’m not available for that, but I appreciate the invitation.”

5. “No, thank you.” (That’s a full sentence, too.)

I

found myself sitting in what felt like the world’s longest traffic jam. There I was, inching along, tapping my steering wheel to the rhythm of impatience, and it hit me…

Too often, we feel like life is a lot like being stuck in traffic. You have your plans, your GPS is set, and then— bam—you hit a wall or brake lights.

Sometimes it can be pretty frustrating, right?

However, if we really look at our weekly navigation, it’s always filled with unexpected detours, roadblocks, and—let’s be honest—plenty of potholes. There are times when we feel like we’re getting nowhere fast, but there are also times when we’re moving so quickly that we meet or miss our destinations too soon, and we lose some of those special moments along the way.

It occurred to me that we don’t have to just be stuck in traffic—we can approach our week with ease and intention. Here are some engaging tips to inspire a smoother ride this week:

1. Plan Your Route.

Just as you would map out your journey to avoid congestion, take time to plan your meals, workouts, work demands, and yes—plan for fun. Pit stops for self-care will recharge your energy and enthusiasm, and help you stay on track.

2. Pause With Patience.

If we feel stuck in traffic, rather than fret over it, take a deep breath and enjoy everything around you. Look at those who are singing in their cars, riding with their children, or just sitting quietly. There are lessons all around us. This is surely the time to practice mindfulness and deep breath-

ing. Somehow, this always gives us a new perspective.

3. Stay Alert to Roadblocks.

Be aware of what might derail your healthy intentions—whether it’s an overcommitted schedule, fatigue, lack of exercise, or even stress cravings. We all experience this, so let’s keep our healthy snacks nearby just in case. Our future self will thank us when we’re not at the mercy of a vending machine.

4. Seek Alternate Routes.

If you find yourself feeling stuck, don’t hesitate to explore new activities, new recipes, new dances, and most importantly, new experiences.

How many of you tried the new dance “Boots on the Ground”? It could be a game changer for your health—a fresh way to start your week.

If you encounter setbacks or unexpected challenges, remind yourself that every detour can lead to a new opportunity—and most importantly, new insight.

7. Arrive at Your Destination With Gratitude.

As you reflect on this week, take a moment to express gratitude for all the experiences and lessons learned along the way. On Thursday of this past week, I attended a celebration of life and a celebration of spring—all within hours.

Both experiences were enough to fill my cup for weeks.

So as we get ready for this week, let’s prioritize our health in a way that keeps us from getting stuck in traffic. Let’s enjoy the ride, embrace the journey, and remember that each road ahead is ours to explore.

So, what is a “glow-up?” It’s the buzzword for becoming your best, most radiant self. Whether you’re crushing fitness goals, building confidence, or just channeling your inner rizz-master, this month is your moment to level up.

1. SET GOALS THAT LIGHT YOU UP Skip the boring to-do lists. Choose goals that spark joy! Maybe it’s completing a mini self-care challenge, dancing to your favorite playlist on the porch, savoring a healthy meal, or just remembering to breathe. These aren’t about perfection—they’re about happiness.

2. LISTEN UP Tune in to your body. If you’re tired, rest. If your inner child wants to play, go for it. Trust your gut—it’s smarter than you think. Your feelings are valid and worth honoring.

3. CLEAR OUT THE CLUTTER Both mental and physical. Unfollow people or pages that weigh you down. Upgrade your habits—and yes, maybe your wardrobe too. You’re evolving; your space and vibe should reflect that.

4. BE YOUR OWN BEST FRIEND Speak kindly to yourself. Cheer yourself on. And throw in a little humor while you’re at it—your mental peace deserves someone who keeps it real and hilarious. Embrace your quirks—they’re part of your magic.

What is Betrayal Trauma?

B

etrayal trauma is a deep psychological wound that occurs when someone we deeply depend on violates our trust—often a spouse, partner, or even a close friend or family member.

This kind of trauma mimics the symptoms of PTSD and is profoundly disorienting.

You built your relationship on love, safety, and certainty—then, one discovery changed everything. Suddenly, you find yourself asking, “Did I ever really know them?”

Symptoms of Betrayal Trauma When the foundation of trust is cracked, your nervous system goes into overdrive.

Betrayal trauma can look and feel like:

• Hypervigilance and scanning for signs of deceit • Checking phones, emails, locations— seeking reassurance • Anxiety during "normal" activities like a grocery run or text notification • Emotional numbness, rage, or deep grief • Questioning the entire relationship— even happy memories According to recent research, nearly 60% of couples report experiencing some form of betrayal—emotional or physical— within their relationship lifespan.

For some, that journey means ending the relationship. For others, it means redefining trust, creating safety, and starting anew.

Holding Space For What Matters Most

amily is not just shared DNA. It's the people who show up, love us unconditionally, and hold space for our most authentic selves.

My vibrant, ten-year-old daughter keeps me laughing and grounded; my sweet, seven-year-old son, who is nonverbal and on the autism spectrum, speaks volumes to me through his spirit; and my bonus son, who just began his college journey, continues to inspire me with his ambition and heart.

And while my home is my heart, I’m also deeply grateful for my “chosen family”—my girlfriends. Though they’re scattered across cities and states, they remain my lifeline. Whether it’s a group chat that makes me laugh out loud or a voice note that lifts my spirit, these women remind me that sisterhood is sacred.

To say that life is busy is an understatement. As a wife, mom, business owner, nonprofit director, and doctoral student, I’ve learned that putting relationships first doesn’t always mean grand gestures.

It’s in the quiet moments—homework check-ins, meltdown cuddles, and early-morning lattes at Lucky Goat—that real connection is built.

In a world that often prizes hustle over harmony, I wholeheartedly believe that success means little if we lose sight of our connections.
