push through, the ones who chose to forge a path forward, the ones who knew when it was time to go and those who blazed trails for themselves and others to follow despite the odds.

For the cover women and Tallahassee Woman Magazine readers, those passions will not mirror each other. Yet, those passions will be examples of what happens when drive, and a relentless willingness to excel collide.

Every day, I see and read about women making a difference in this city. I often wonder and have asked some of them how they managed their professional and personal lives while also finding time to give, share and be present throughout the community.

The answer differs from woman to woman. But the root of it all comes down to passion and purpose. As a journalist, it’s no surprise that television titan Oprah Winfrey is one of my personal sheroes.

E

very day, I encounter phenomenal women – knowing there’s more behind every greeting and, at times, casual conversations. We’re all driven by the things that matter most, and I’m always grateful to learn and share how remarkable, professional women in our community arrived at their current chapter in life and work.

I’ve yet to meet a woman who hasn’t faced challenges in the workplace that caused her to question what was at hand when, for example, she’s passed over for promotions to make room for her male counterpart’s ascent.

Or when she’s forced to present reams of research and data to make a case or prove her subject-matter expertise. Yet the same expectation may not come for others.

Many more examples exist. And, if we were all sitting at a table discussing this issue, the shared experience would stir something inside all of us – if we’re brave enough to be honest.

Spice, Silk, and Everything Pumpkin

here’s something magical about the scent of cinnamon, cardamom, and pumpkin swirling through the kitchen.

This pie isn’t just dessert—it’s a sensory journey. It’s comfort, culture, and celebration, wrapped in a buttery, graham cracker embrace.

Whether you’re hosting a family feast or an intimate dinner for two, this pie delivers nostalgia with a sophisticated twist that’s perfect for the holiday season.

PUMPKIN PIE WITH CARDAMOM & GRAHAM CRACKER CRUST The Graham Cracker Crust INGREDIENTS:

• 3 cups finely crushed graham crackers (about 24 full sheets) (Gluten-free option: use certified gluten-free graham crackers) • ¾ cup unsalted butter, melted • (Dairy-free: coconut oil or vegan butter substitute) • ½ cup light brown sugar • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon • Pinch of sea salt

DIRECTIONS:

• Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

• In a large bowl, combine graham cracker crumbs, sugar, cinnamon, and salt.

• Stir in melted butter until the mixture resembles damp sand.

• Divide evenly between two 9-inch pie pans, pressing firmly along the bottom and up the sides.

• Bake for 8–10 minutes, until lightly golden. Cool completely before adding filling.

The Pumpkin-Cardamom Filling INGREDIENTS:

• 2 cans (15 oz each) pure pumpkin purée • 1½ cups dark brown sugar • 4 large eggs • 1 cup heavy cream (Dairy-free: full-fat coconut milk) • 1 cup evaporated milk (Dairy-free: oat or almond milk creamer) • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1½ teaspoons ground cardamom • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg • ¼ teaspoon ground ginger • ½ teaspoon fine sea salt

DIRECTIONS:

• Reduce oven temperature to 325°F (165°C).

• In a large bowl, whisk pumpkin, sugar, eggs, and vanilla until smooth.

• Add cream and milk, whisking until silky.

• Fold in all spices and salt; taste and adjust if desired.

• Pour filling evenly into the cooled crusts.

• Bake for 45–55 minutes, or until the center is just set with a slight jiggle.

• Cool for 2 hours at room temperature, then refrigerate until chilled.

• Top with vanilla-bean whipped cream (or coconut whipped cream for dairy-free) • Drizzle with maple syrup or salted caramel • Sprinkle with candied pecans, cardamom sugar, or toasted coconut

By Kara Irby Kimberly Hankerson is a dynamic force in the Tallahassee community. The Perry native is committed to excellence while balancing an impressive career in nonprofit fundraising, single motherhood and civic leadership.

She serves as the President of both the Tallahassee Chapter of the Links, Incorporated and the Tallahassee Chapter of Jack and Jill — guiding both organizations into milestone 75th anniversary years.

“I never sought out these roles,” Hankerson said. “I was happy to just be a worker bee.”

Hankerson said her drive to do things well helped propel her into the two top positions, and she’s grateful she rose to the occasion.

In addition, Hankerson also serves as an ambassador for her sorority’s premier philanthropic arm, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Educational Advancement Foundation, Inc.® (EAF).

EAF exists to provide need — and merit-based scholarships, fellowships, and endowments to degree-seeking students of all backgrounds.

While serving in a volunteer position that helps students see their higher ed dreams come true. Hankerson takes on this task daily as Assistant Vice President for University Advancement at Florida A&M University — the nation’s #1 public HBCU for six consecutive years.

“I help people support what they’re most passionate about,” she said.

For more than thirty years, Hankerson has paired her passion for philanthropy with an unwavering commitment to service.

Kim’s journey began at United Way of the Big Bend in Tallahassee and would span nearly 15 years — even forging partnerships with household names such as UPS, The Coca-Cola Company, and Delta Air Lines.

After leaving the United Way, Hankerson took her skills into higher education, first with the University of Florida, then Florida State, before taking on the role at her alma mater in 2019. A two-time alumna of the university, Kim holds both a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and an MBA from FAMU. Kim’s proudest accomplishment, however, is mothering her 11-year-old daughter, Bailey.

Her advice to other women ready to take the plunge into something new?

“Figure out what your passion is and do it well,” she said.

or more than four decades, Brenda Hannah Moss has been a driving force in Tallahassee’s beauty industry, creating a legacy of persistence, vision, and dedication.

As the longtime owner of Private Quarters Hair Salon, she transformed a craft into an award-winning business, earning recognition as Small Businessperson of the Year and Emerging Business Leader. A graduate of the Jim Moran Institute for Global Entrepreneurship (SBEP) Class XV, she has also been honored as one of the 25 Women You Should Know by the Tallahassee Democrat (2017), a Tallahassee Magazine Top Salon nominee (2017), recipient of the Economic Lifetime Township Award from Delta Sigma Theta (2024), and named among the Women Winning in Biz by the Office of Economic Vitality (2024).

Her entrepreneurial path has not been without challenges. From building her salon to navigating financial hurdles and the COVID-19 crisis, her resilience became her hallmark.

“You never stop; you just keep going,” she says.

That philosophy has guided not only her career, but also the many students she mentored while teaching cosmetology at Lively Technical College. Today, many thrive as stylists and salon owners.

A proud graduate of FAMU’s Developmental Research School, Brenda also earned an A.A. in Fashion Merchandising from Bauder Fashion College and a B.S. in Business Administration/ Organizational Management from Edward Waters University.

Mary’s happiest moments are often the simplest: time spent with family, the laughter of friends around a table, or a quiet evening reflecting on the day. She has learned to cheris the everyday blessings, knowing they are the foundation of a full and meaningful life.

Over the years she has worn many titles daughter, sister, wife to Lee, mother, grandmother to six, and now great-grandmother.

She shared that each role has taught her about patience, perspective, and love. Her son Leland and daughter Kelly have given her the gift of understanding what it means both to love and to be loved.

MARY NICHOLSON Mary grew up in a family where both her parents served. This meant moving often and starting over frequently. While not always easy these experiences gave her resilience and adaptability and would serve her well as she carved her path. Her career has been one of service, shaped by her belief in lifting others and leaving things better than she found them.

She poured her talents into spaces where people could grow and thrive, and in the process, discovered her own strength. One of the best pieces of advice she ever received came from a mentor who reminded her that “your light isn’t meant to be hidden.” That wisdom carried her through moments of doubt, when she questioned whether her voice mattered. It reminded her that shining her light gave others permission to do the same.

In 2019, at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mary was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Treatment meant surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Through it all, she continued working full-time at the Leon County Sheriff’s Office, surrounded by colleagues whose support and prayers sustained her. Of all the titles I’ve held, “cancer survivor” ranks among the most meaningful. Mary has worked in higher education and government, in fundraising and human resources. She briefly retired from LCSO and today works as the Employee Services Administrator for the Consolidated Dispatch Center. For Mary, the strength of women supporting women has been undeniable. She has seen how encouragement, kindness, and honest conversation can change a life. “We rise together,” she says, and her life is proof of that truth.

Her advice to young women is heartfelt and direct: “Don’t wait until you feel ready. tallahassee woman | 22 | holiday issue 2025

Start where you are, even if you feel uncertain. Confidence grows with each step you take. Stay curious, keep learning, and remember that every step matters.” If Mary could address one injustice it would be a violation of individual rights. She said, “Fairness and dignity should never be denied to anyone. Injustice erodes the common good, and every person deserves respect and opportunity.”

NADIA NIXON Adaptability, resilience, and service - these are the words that come to life when you hear Nadia Nixon’s story. Born in Mississippi and raised both as a military child and a preacher’s kid, Nadia grew up learning how to thrive in changing environments. Moving often and building new communities taught her flexibility and openness, gifts she now carries into her career and personal life.

preneur, blending her expertise in marketing, operations, and logistics into a business rooted in both strategy and heart. To her, real estate is never just about houses; it’s about creating homes and experiences that feel personal, lasting, and life-giving. “My mission,” she says, “is to help people experience home differently through service, excellence, and a commitment to seeing others succeed.” Her career path wasn’t linear. Nadia once dreamed of becoming the Director of Football Operations for Nick Saban at the University of Alabama. She spent years working in the high-pressure world of college athletics, gaining skills that now fuel her success in real estate. When the pandemic forced a period of reflection, she realized she wanted more than a career, she wanted a legacy of service and impact in her community.

The best advice she ever received is a phrase she carries close: “A closed mouth doesn’t get fed.” To Nadia, it means asking boldly for what you need and refusing to shrink yourself in pursuit of your dreams.

“The worst you’ll hear is ‘no,’ but the best could change your life,” she says.

Nadia’s happiest moments are grounded in presence: time with loved ones who bring joy and laughter, quiet evenings with fresh flowers on the table, or exploring new recipes from TikTok and Instagram. She believes life is meant to be romanticized, and she embraces each season as part of the woman God created her to be. She has experienced firsthand the power of women supporting women. Mentors, friends, and colleagues have lifted her, and she now seeks to do the same through mentoring, sharing resources, and reminding others of their worth. “When women stand together,” she says, “we create ripples that change lives.” Her advice to young women is simple and powerful: “Believe in yourself enough to take the first step. Don’t wait for permission, don’t wait for everything to be perfect, just start. If Nadia could fix one injustice, it would be the lack of access to financial literacy and generational wealth in Black and

Brown communities. “Fixing that injustice means closing the wealth gap and creating a world where opportunity isn’t defined by your zip code or your background, but by your determination and your dreams.”

JACKIE FORTMANN Resilience is not just a word in Jackie’s vocabulary - it’s the essence of her story.

She grew up in a small Iowa town where hard work was woven into the fabric of daily life. At 18, her world changed forever when an ATV accident left her paralyzed.

Doctors told her she had less than a one percent chance of ever walking again. It was devastating news, but Jackie refused to let it define her. Anchored by her father’s words, “Keep your chin up, pumpkin”, she leaned into determination and faith. She worked tirelessly through physical therapy, rebuilt her independence, studied abroad, earned her degrees, and built a life she once thought impossible. Along the way, she endured more than 20 surgeries, worked multiple jobs, and faced the heartbreak of losing her father. Yet through it all, she remained grounded in gratitude, never losing sight of how far she had come. Her guiding philosophy comes from a simple phrase: “Life goes on with or without you, so you may as well go on with it.”

For Jackie, it’s about choosing to rise anyway, to live fully and with purpose.

After moving to Tallahassee and settling in Frenchtown, her eyes were opened to the harsh realities of people living without food, shelter and support. She began volunteering at a local shelter and that experience led her into social work, where she provided case management, managed prevention funds, and eventually served as deputy director of a nonprofit supporting people with disabilities. Today, she works at a macro level, managing contracts with nonprofit agencies and focusing on housing and homelessness. Her work is deeply personal, rooted in empathy for those carrying burdens that feel too heavy. “If I can ease someone’s struggle, even a little,” she says, “then my work has meaning.” Women supporting women has been a lifeline for Jackie. A small group of friends became her anchor, meeting weekly to read and reflect together.

Through laughter and tears, they uncovered shared struggles and offered one another compassion, strength, and healing. “When women support each other, incredible things happen,” she says.

For young women, Jackie offers this encouragement: “Let your dreams be your wings, and your heart be your guide. Life is too short to wait—start now. Healing doesn’t have to be solitary, and strength is often found in vulnerability. Lean into your support systems, and never forget that even in the darkest seasons, you are not alone.”

Jackie is deeply passionate about addressing one of the most fundamental injustices facing humanity, the lack of access to safe housing, nutritious food, and healthcare.

She believes these should never be luxuries but are rather basic human rights. She advocates for a world where dignity isn’t conditional, and where support is accessible to all, especially those navigating hardship alone.

ISN'T MEANT TO BE HIDDEN

SHAWN WILLIAMS Resilience has been at the heart of Shawn Williams’ story from the very beginning. Born to a mother who lived with mental health challenges, she grew up in circumstances that could have broken her spirit. Instead, she rose above them.

She credits her grandmother, Alice, with shaping her life. “Grandma taught me to be a servant,” she says. “She kept me engaged in service and taught me to give back.” Shawn is queer black woman who is masculine presenting and while she says she knows that’s not always popular, she wants young people to see her life as proof that it is possible to live authentically and thrive. Her grandmother’s words continue to guide her: “Don’t be what society thinks you are… Be the change that changes the narrative of who they think we are.” Her passion for mentoring youth runs deep. She believes it doesn’t have to be complicated what matters is showing up and being what kids need. She serves through her church, her community, and wherever she’s called.

Each year she hosts a toy drive that has provided Christmas gifts for more than 300 families, especially children of incarcerated parents.

by her grandmother’s years running church kitchens and school cafeterias. “I think serving people good food is a way to their heart,” she reflects. Life has not been without struggle. Living with the reality of her mother’s illness left her angry as a child, but she overcame it through her grandmother’s support. That experience drives her advocacy for mental health services today.

She names loyalty, intelligence, and hard work as her best qualities: “If I’m locked in with you, you can bet I’ll always be by your side.” Family is central to Shawn’s life. She cherishes Sunday dinners, large gatherings, and traveling with her two teenagers, now 15 and 19. Even if the kids prefer staying inside the resort, those moments together are

priceless. She also speaks candidly about the injustices faced by LGBTQAI+ people in healthcare, criminal justice, and protection from discrimination. “If I had more time to be active, I could make a huge impact in this community,” she says. Her words reflect both her awarness of challenges and her determination to keep pushing for change. Her story is one of courage, service, and authenticity. Shawn Williams is loyal to those she loves, passionate about her community, and unafraid to live fully in her truth. Her advice to young people is simple: You don’t have to accept the box the world tries to put you in. Be bold enough to break it - and in doing so, you’ll give others permission to do the same.

Lives are touched and changed daily as a direct result of each of them. To reach this chapter in their lives, they’ve all amassed a deep understanding of what it takes to be a leader and more than just a title.

Life is the ultimate teacher. Early in their budding careers – sitting in workspaces and meetings when they were the only woman or person of color – lessons were learned. Time taught them to find their voice and their way in male-dominated fields or industries, making their mark along the way.

Q. What inspired you to become a leader in your field, and how do you leverage that passion to drive innovation within your organization?

I’ve always been fascinated by the way the built environment influences human behavior, whether that’s encouraging healthy lifestyles, a student’s ability to walk or bike to school, or public spaces where people feel safe to smile at a stranger. At Blueprint I have the privilege of being involved in the development of public spaces, and my passion drives me to ensure that these new public spaces achieve a higher quality of life for Tallahassee-Leon County citizens. The Mayor and City and County Commissioners have set the bar high for what they expect the Blueprint funds to deliver and my goal is for our team to always exceed everyone’s expectations.

For example, when you walk along a street, how do you feel? Is the distance between the sidewalk and the cars wide enough to give you a sense of safety? Do the adjacent trees provide shade? Can you comfortably walk beside a friend pushing a stroller or using a wheelchair? These considerations drive decision making in planning public spaces and our success in creating these spaces influences the positive perception of our community not just for people who live here today but also for businesses looking to expand in Tallahassee-Leon County.

Q. How do you cultivate a culture of inclusivity and empowerment within your team or organization, ensuring that diverse voices are heard and valued?

A. A simple example of how I cultivate a culture of inclusivity and empowerment within the Blueprint team is that I refuse to have any negativity in our monthly staff meetings. Instead, our staff meetings are filled with laughter and ample opportunity for all to share their perspectives and ideas.

While we remain divided over whether or not a hot dog is a sandwich, we respect each person’s unique role in achieving the organizational goal and celebrate our accomplishments together.

Q. What strategies do you employ to navigate the complexities of leadership, especially in male-dominated industries, and how can other women leaders benefit from your experiences?

A. I work in the construction industry, which is male dominated. I find that people mirror the behavior of others so if I bring an attitude of mutual respect and am solution-oriented, others will typically meet me there. It may sound a little crazy, but if I walk into a room and its only men leaning back in their chairs with their arms crossed, I like the challenge of getting them to lean in and be a part of the solution.

Q. How do you measure the impact of your leadership initiatives on the growth and sustainability of small businesses in your community?

A. At Blueprint, we are at the helm of implementing large-scale community projects across the Tallahassee-Leon County. We have a small team of 25 people that manage a half a billion-work program. We cannot deliver these projects without the local businesses that contract with Blueprint for planning, design, and construction services.

These professionals not only bring innovative ideas for reducing costs and faster implementation, they live here and have a vested passion for this community. We encourage the larger local businesses to partner with local small businesses. We leverage our proximity to the Office of Economic Vitality to the greatest extent, for example, we co-host prime-sub mixers to share information on upcoming Blueprint projects.

My leadership success is measured by one metric, the ability to get these projects completed so that the community can benefit from reduced traffic congestion, more park spaces, bike paths and sidewalks, reduced flooding and protection of our drinking water, and small, local business participation is critical for my success.

Many of our projects are in business districts like the Market District and the South Monroe-South Adams District, and while the construction work can be intimidating to businesses in the work areas, the injection of substantial Blueprint dollars into these districts results in creating more vibrant, safer, and attractive places that people want to shop, recreate, dine, work and live. existing businesses and attract new investment is the goal and we do that through early and often communication with the owners throughout the project process. A great example of how the Blueprint projects grow and sustain small businesses, is the infrastructure investment that was made for the Capital Cascades Trail whereby vacant and underutilized properties are now places of employment, investment, and activity.

Q. In your opinion, what are the most critical skills and qualities that women leaders should develop to thrive in their roles, and how do you foster these in yourself and others?

A. You have to put your ego to the side.

Once you remove that from the equation, you can work collaboratively, which is always more effective. I love the phrase, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. If I find that I’m feeling frustrated over a work issue, I pause and try to identify why, often it’s because I let my ego sneak back into the room. Once I recognize that, I can see the issue more clearly and move forward to find a solution.

Q. As a woman leader, how do you balance the demands of your professional life with personal commitments, and what advice do you have for others facing similar challenges?

A. I strive for a family first workplace at Blueprint. For anyone with young children, elderly parents, or other personal commitments, find and cultivate a team culture where people cover for each other because there is a recognition that you will cover for them when they need it, and we all need help at some point. Remember, no one has all good days.

Kara Holbert

LEARNED TO PUSH THROUGH Throughout much of her career, Kara Holbert often found herself reporting to male supervisors—and navigating the unspoken challenges that come with being a woman striving for advancement in male-dominated environments. As she rose into leadership roles, the bias became unmistakable:

interruptions in meetings, overlooked ideas, and the constant need to substantiate her insights. To be heard, she armed herself with indisputable data and research to reinforce her expertise.

“Research shows that women leaders are far more likely to receive critical feedback than their male counterparts and are often judged more harshly for the same behaviors,” Holbert shared. “That reality has influenced not only how I lead, but how I show up and advocate for other women.”

Like many of the remarkable women featured on this cover, Holbert discovered that the keys to perseverance are preparation, confidence, and persistence. Along her journey, she found mentors and allies—both women and men—who shaped her approach to leadership and inspired her to create spaces where people feel valued, seen, and empowered.

Q. What inspired you to become a leader in your field, and how do you leverage that passion to drive innovation within your organization?

A. I’ve always been inspired by the way entrepreneurship can transform both lives and communities. At Domi, that passion drives me to remove barriers for founders and build systems where innovation and opportunity can thrive. I’ve long been fascinated by how people can improve their circumstances, and I believe entrepreneurship is one of the most powerful vehicles to make that possible.

Q. Can you share a specific example of a challenge you faced as a woman leader in a small business or economic development role, and how did you overcome it?

A. In nearly every role I’ve held, about 90% of my supervisors have been men. As I moved into higher-level positions, two things became increasingly clear: I was interrupted in meetings far more often, and I had to provide extra data and research to validate my ideas, something my male counterparts rarely had to do, if my ideas were heard at all. Research backs this up:

studies show women leaders are more likely to receive critical or negative feedback than men, and are often judged more harshly for the same behaviors. That reality has shaped the way I lead and the way I advocate for other women. For me, the keys to overcoming these challenges have been persistence, thorough preparation, and always doing the extra work. It also helps having other men and women in your corner, it makes a world of difference to have advocates in your professional life and friends in your personal life to help you work through any challenges.

Q. How do you cultivate a culture of inclusivity and empowerment within your team or organization, ensuring that diverse voices are heard and valued?

A. We design our programs to reflect the full community we serve, making sure they are welcoming and accessible to all. Within our team, I prioritize creating an environment where open dialogue is encouraged and where every individual feels their contributions matter. By giving people true ownership of projects, we ensure that every voice carries weight, ideas are respected, and everyone has a role in shaping our success.

Q. What role does collaboration play in your approach to leadership, and how do you build strategic partnerships to enhance economic development?

A. Collaboration is so important, no one can do this work alone. I rely on my team to help be a part of the decision making process– when your team is just as invested as you are, successful outcomes occur more often and everyone can feel a sense of pride and ownership in the work we do, and wake up everyday looking forward to going to work.

Q. As a leader, how do you balance the demands of your professional life with personal commitments, and what advice do you have for others facing similar challenges?

A. Balancing work and personal life can be a challenge for any working woman, especially working moms who are leading multallahassee woman | 31 | holiday issue 2025

tiple roles like myself. While it’s not always easy, I make a conscious effort to limit the work I bring home and focus on being present. For example, we always sit down to eat dinner together, even if it means eating later, because that time as a family matters.

I also hold myself to a strict “no work on Sundays” rule to protect space for rest and connection. At the same time, I’m realistic.

There are times when the balance tips more heavily to one side, but I believe the key is consistently prioritizing what’s most important and making sure your choices align with your values and long-term goals.

Marina Lickson

LEARNED THE POWER OF KNOWING AN ENTREPRENEUR’S JOURNEY FIRSTHAND Director, Northwest Florida Programs, Jim Moran Institute for Global Entrepreneurship Marina Lickson’s path to leadership was born from resilience, reinvention, and purpose. After an unexpected career setback in the defense industry during the Clinton Administration, she found herself drawn to Tallahassee—a place whose rolling hills reminded her of home and offered the promise of a new beginning. What started as a fresh start evolved into a powerful entrepreneurial journey that shaped her calling: empowering others to thrive through adversity.

From co-owning Honeytree Natural Foods with her husband to helping him navigate a cancer diagnosis while raising a blended family of four children, Lickson learned that leadership often grows from life’s hardest lessons. COVER A. My journey into leadership development came from a very personal place. After owning and operating my own business in Tallahassee for 15 years, I experienced firsthand both the exhilarating highs and the challenging lows of entrepreneurship.

I understood what it felt like to be isolated as a business owner, to face obstacles that seemed insurmountable, and to wish for experienced guidance. When I transitioned to the Jim Moran Institute, I brought that authentic understanding with me.

What drives me every day is knowing that we're not just teaching business concepts— we're changing lives and strengthening our entire community. At JMI, we integrate innovative practices by creating experiential learning environments where participants work on their business, not just in it. Our programs like the Small Business Executive Program and Nonprofit Executive Program are designed around peer-to-peer learning, where seasoned business owners learn from each other while being guided by expert faculty and successful entrepreneurs.

Q. Can you share a specific challenge you encountered while promoting leadership development initiatives, and what strategies did you employ to overcome that obstacle?

A. One of our biggest challenges has been reaching entrepreneurs in underserved communities who face economic hardships.

Many talented potential business owners simply couldn't access traditional business education due to financial barriers or geographic limitations. This is what led us to develop the LEAP program—the Leon Entrepreneurship and Adversity Program.

We recognized that we needed to go beyond our traditional model and meet people where they are. LEAP specifically serves the Big Bend region, including Leon, Wakulla, and Gadsden counties, providing a 10-month comprehensive program with training, mentoring, and consulting—all at no cost. The strategy that made this successful was building genuine community partnerships and creating programming that addresses both business fundamentals and

Perhaps most importantly, we help women recognize that their diverse perspectives and collaborative leadership styles are assets, not weaknesses. A. Inclusion isn't just a buzzword for us— it's fundamental to our mission. We've designed our programs to be accessible in multiple ways. First, there's no cost to participants, which removes the most significant barrier. Second, we offer programs specifically tailored to different communities: our Veterans Programs serve military families, LEAP serves economically disadvantaged entrepreneurs, and our Jim Moran Scholarship program supports African American students.

But true inclusion goes deeper than removing financial barriers. In our programs, we ensure diverse representation among speakers and mentors, create safe spaces for all voices to be heard, and recognize that different communities face different challenges. For instance, in our LEAP Community Bootcamp, we address not just business strategy, but also how to leverage limited resources and build sustainable ventures in challenging circumstances.

Q. What essential skills and qualities do you believe women leaders need to cultivate, and how do you prioritize these within your programs?

A.Women leaders need to develop confidence in their expertise while also building strong networks and collaborative partnerships. Too often, women entrepreneurs try to do everything themselves, which isn't sustainable. In our programs, we emphasize the importance of strategic thinking over day-to-day operational management.

We specifically focus on financial literacy— understanding cash flow, reading financial statements, and making data-driven decisions. We also prioritize negotiation skills and the ability to advocate for themselves and their organizations. Through our CEO Peer2Peer Groups, women business owners practice these skills in a supportive, confidential environment where they can share tallahassee woman | 34 | holiday issue 2025

Q. How do you measure the effectiveness of your leadership development initiatives in shaping the next generation of leaders?

A. We measure success through multiple lenses. Quantitatively, we track business growth metrics: revenue increases, job creation, and business sustainability rates among our graduates. Our Small Business Executive Program participants consistently report significant business improvements within months of completing the program.

But the qualitative measures are equally important. We see participants becoming mentors themselves, joining our speaker network, and actively contributing to Tallahassee's entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Many graduates go on to serve on nonprofit boards, participate in economic development initiatives, and become community leaders beyond their businesses.

The real measure of our impact is the ripple effect—when a LEAP graduate hires their first employee, when a nonprofit executive transforms their organization's financial sustainability, or when a woman business owner becomes a mentor for the next generation. That's how we're truly shaping future leaders and contributing to our community's economic development.

Q. Looking to the future, what is your vision for women in leadership development?

A. I envision a future where women entrepreneurs have equal access to capital, mentorship, and market opportunities. My goal is to continue expanding our programs to reach more women in rural and underserved areas throughout Northwest Florida. We're working on developing specialized pro-

gramming that addresses the unique challenges women face in balancing business leadership with family responsibilities.

I believe the future belongs to collaborative leaders who can build inclusive organizations and sustainable business models.

LEARNED HOW TO “DO IT SCARED” Tangela Lofton’s journey into entrepreneurship began with a clear mission—to close the health and wellness gaps she saw in her community. Her passion for holistic living led her to become a certified herbalist and eventually launch two thriving businesses: Sweet Face Beauty, founded over a decade ago, and Juice Bar Miami, established four years ago.

Both ventures were born from a deep desire to help others understand the healing power of food and to inspire individuals to take ownership of their well-being. With a background as a management analyst and budget coordinator, Lofton combined her business acumen with her commitment to community wellness, creating organizations that are both impactful and sustainable across industries.

Q. Can you discuss a mentor or role model who has significantly influenced your leadership journey, and what key lessons did you learn from them?

A. My greatest role model was my grandmother, who passed away when I was in middle school but left a lasting impact on my life. A key mentor has been Dr. Shelley Johnson, former Dean of FAMU’s School of Nursing and current Provost of Joyce University. I had the privilege of working alongside her for over two years. She exemplified resilience—raising children, improving academic outcomes, and strengthening partnerships and culture—all while never considering giving up, even when others doubted her ability to turn things around.

She is one of the strongest women I’ve ever met, and her example continues to inspire my leadership journey.

Q. What role does collaboration play in your approach to leadership, and how do you build strategic partnerships to enhance economic development?

A. Collaboration is vital to building an inclusive ecosystem that fosters innovation, success, and compassion. I actively seek strategic partnerships with organizations and leaders who align with our mission and values. These relationships help amplify our impact and create sustainable pathways for economic development.

Q. As a woman leader, how do you balance the demands of your professional life with personal commitments, and what advice

do you have for others facing similar challenges?

A. “You can’t pour from an empty glass.”

You must prioritize yourself—your diet, your exercise routine, your relationships, and how you spend your time—because you are your greatest asset. We’re often taught to seek value outside ourselves, but true strength begins within. Self-care is not selfish; it’s essential.

Q. Looking ahead, what vision do you have for the future of women in leadership, particularly in small business and economic development, and how do you plan to contribute to that vision?

A. My vision for women in leadership is to continue breaking barriers and building legacies. I plan to contribute through my ongoing work in health and wellness, advocating through my businesses and future ventures—including exploring opportunities in the tech and healthcare space. Additionally, through my role at the Florida SBDC at FAMU, I’m committed to capacity building and helping small businesses across North Florida launch, grow, and thrive—regardless of industry or obstacles.

Katrina Tuggerson

LEARNED BALANCE IS NOT ABOUT DOING EVERYTHING At this stage of her accomplished career, Katrina Tuggerson has learned the power of balance—giving herself permission to rest, delegate, and make space for faith and family. As President of the Capital City Chamber of Commerce, she leads with purpose and presence, yet remains grounded in what truly matters most.

Tuggerson is a passionate advocate for minority-owned businesses, working tirelessly to expand access to partnerships, resources, and capital that help entrepreneurs move from surviving to thriving. “Every new day brings fresh opportunities—the excitement of new beginnings and the joy of serving with passion,” Tuggerson shared. “I see life as the power of multiplication: every action, every act of kindness, every step forward doubles the potential of what’s possible. Timing is everything, and I remind myself not to be discouraged by delays.” She stands on these words: As long as we wake up with breath in our lungs, we’re gifted the chance to embrace the NEXT and try again.

Her leadership journey has been shaped by diverse professional experiences, including serving as Associate Campus Director for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and as Director of Diversity Programming and Small Business Development for the former Economic Development Council, an outreach of the Greater Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce. These roles deepened her commitment to inclusion, opportunity, and community advancement.

Tuggerson knows firsthand the hurdles women face in leadership and remains steadfast in her belief that the future belongs to confident, visible, and empowered women. “The future of leadership is collaborative, compassionate, and unapologetically female—and I’m proud to be part of that movement,” she said. Her vision is for women to lead with confidence, visibility, and access – without limits.

Q.What first inspired your journey into leadership, and how have you used that passion to spark innovation and meaningful change within your organization?

A. My leadership journey began with recognizing the power of my voice and realizing that I could make a tangible difference in my community. I was raised by strong, purpose-driven parents who taught me that leadership is not about titles but about service and integrity. That foundation inspired me to step into spaces where I could create opportunities for others, especially in underserved communities.

At the Capital City Chamber of Commerce, that passion drives innovation through in-

clusion, entrepreneurship, and access. We’re not just supporting small businesses—we’re building ecosystems of opportunity that empower families and transform communities.

Q. Can you share a defining moment when you faced a challenge as a woman leader in small business or economic development, and how you turned it into growth?

A. Early in my career, I was often the only woman—and frequently the only woman of color—at the decision-making table.

My perspective was sometimes dismissed, but instead of shrinking back, I leaned into preparation and excellence. Over time, results spoke louder than bias. That experience taught me that obstacles don’t define your path; they sharpen your purpose. I learned to turn resistance into resilience and to open doors for other women who might face similar barriers.

Q. How do you create a culture of inclusion and empowerment within your organization?

A. Inclusion is not a policy—it’s a practice.

I cultivate it by leading with empathy, listening first, and making sure every team member feels valued. Collaboration is encouraged across all levels, and new ideas are welcomed, even when they challenge tradition. Empowerment also means access.

I’m intentional about creating pathways for professional development, mentorship, and leadership growth, particularly for those historically left out of the conversation.

Q. What strategies have helped you navigate leadership in male-dominated spaces, and how can other women apply those lessons?

A. Faith, confidence, and preparation are my anchors. In male-dominated spaces, you must know who you are and what you bring to the table. I’ve learned that authenticity and consistency command respect. My advice to women is simple: never dim your light. Be confident, stay kind, and lead with purpose. When you show up prepared and rooted in truth, your presence will shift the atmosphere.

Q. How do you measure the impact of your leadership on small businesses in your community?

A. Impact, to me, is transformation. We measure success through tangible outcomes—business growth, access to capital, and partnerships formed through our programs. But beyond the data, the real measure comes from entrepreneurs who tell me they were finally able to expand, hire, or move into a storefront because of our support. Those stories remind me that leadership isn’t about recognition—it’s about results that ripple through generations.

Q. What are the most essential skills for women leaders today, and how do you nurture them?

A. Resilience, adaptability, and emotional intelligence are essential. Leadership today requires strength balanced with grace.

I nurture those traits through reflection, prayer, and continued learning. For others, I emphasize mentorship—helping women see their own potential even before they fully believe it. I’ve learned that empowered women empower others, and that’s how we create lasting change.

Q. Who has been a pivotal mentor or role model in your leadership journey, and what lessons did they teach you?

A. My greatest mentors are my parents. My mother showed me how to lead with compassion and excellence, while my father instilled integrity and hard work. Their lessons shaped how I serve and show up for others. My children, Austin and Asia, also inspire me daily. They remind me that leadership is legacy—building something that outlives you and uplifts those who follow.

Q. Collaboration seems central to your leadership. How do you build strategic partnerships that drive economic development?

A. Collaboration is the heartbeat of community progress. I believe no single organization can solve systemic challenges alone.

Building lasting partnerships requires trust, transparency, and mutual respect. When people feel valued and aligned, collaboration becomes a multiplier for growth.

Q. How do you balance leadership, entrepreneurship, and family—and what advice do you have for women striving to do the same?

A. Balance is not about doing everything; it’s about knowing what matters most. I give myself permission to rest, delegate, and create space for family. My faith keeps me grounded, and my family keeps me focused on what truly matters. Every new day brings fresh opportunities—the excitement of new beginnings and the joy of serving with passion. I see life as the power of multiplication: every action, every act of kindness, every step forward doubles the potential of what’s possible. Timing is everything, and I remind myself not to be discouraged by delays. As long as we wake up with breath in our lungs, we’re gifted the chance to embrace the NEXT and try again.

Through it all, I stand firmly on my favorite scripture: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” That truth keeps me centered, motivated, and ready for whatever comes next. To other women, I’d say: protect your peace. You can pursue excellence without losing yourself. Harmony, not perfection, is the real goal.

Q. What is your vision for the future of women in leadership, and how do you plan to shape it?

My vision is for women to lead with confidence, visibility, and access—without limits. I want to see more women influencing policy, shaping business ecosystems, and driving innovation. Through the Capital City Chamber, I’ll continue building pipelines that equip women with the tools, networks, and opportunities to thrive. The future of leadership is collaborative, compassionate, and unapologetically female— and I’m proud to be part of that movement.

s we observe Women’s Business Month, I am reminded of the countless ways women leaders shape the future of our economy. Their impact is seen not only in the businesses they create and lead but also in the communities they strengthen through vision, resilience, and collaboration.

In Tallahassee-Leon County, I have had the privilege of working alongside women whose leadership defines what inclusive economic development truly means.

I have seen Autumn Calder, my counterpart at our sister agency, the Blueprint Intergovernmental Agency, steer her team with a steady hand, ensuring that major infrastructure projects not only meet technical standards but also reflect the spirit of community. Her insistence on asking the right questions—about safety, accessibility, and design—reminds us that economic development must be people-centered if it is to endure.

Through Kara Holbert’s leadership at Domi Station, I’ve witnessed the transformative power of fostering entrepreneurship. Her commitment to creating a space where new ideas thrive has been critical to nurturing Tallahassee’s startup culture. I’ve admired how she equips entrepreneurs with not only resources but also the confidence to be heard in spaces where women have often been overlooked.

Working with Marina Lickson and the Jim Moran Institute has shown me what it means to marry experience with mentorship. Marina brings authenticity and empathy to her advocacy, empowering entrepreneurs to weather the challenges of ownership while keeping their vision intact.

Finally, Angela Lofton’s role at the Florida SBDC has been a reminder that courage—what she calls “doing it scared”—is often the bridge between an idea and a thriving enterprise. Having once served as the Regional Director of the FSBDC at FAMU, I can truly appreciate the tireless work that Tangela and her team do every day to lift businesses and entrepreneurs across our region.

The Dynamic Duo: A Woman’s Intuition and Analytics

aking effective business decisions is both an art and a science. The art of decision-making is based on intuition, emotional intelligence, and situational awareness.

Intuition is the process of quickly using past experiences and information in decision-making.

Emotional intelligence is the ability to manage one’s own emotions and the emotions of others in the decision-making process. Situational awareness is the ability to perceive, understand, and project what is happening in one’s environment that assists in decision-making.

The science of decision-making is based on the quantitative analysis of data or analytics. Analytics is the process of statistically analyzing and interpreting numerical data for decision-making.

It has long been said that a woman’s intuition is powerful. The combination of a woman’s intuition and analytics—the dynamic duo—can lead women in business to be even more powerful in their decision-making capabilities.

To unlock the potential for more powerful decision-making capabilities, women in business can work to strengthen their intuition and analytics skills. Although intuition is more innate, women in business can enhance their intuition by having more intentional lived experiences and improving their emotional intelligence and situational awareness.

By practicing mindfulness to be more cognitively aware of things happening in their environment, women can improve their emotional intelligence and situational awareness.

To strengthen their analytics skills, women in business must brush up on their knowledge of statistics and the use of Excel. Women must also invest in ways to learn how to use analytics tools like Tableau and Power BI to make more datadriven decisions. Women’s key to unlocking more powerful, confident decision-making in business is putting the dynamic duo of combining their enhanced innate intuition with analytics in action.

ecently, I had the privilege of witnessing something profound — a celebration of legacy that transcended time, age, and circumstance. My husband and five of his fraternity brothers reunited to honor the 55th anniversary of founding their fraternity at Florida State University. What began as a simple gathering evolved into a moving tribute to brotherhood and purpose — the kind of legacy that extends far beyond college days or organizational pride.

A Week of Living with Legacy

Men from multiple generations showed up — some with stories that stretched back to the very beginning, others just starting their journey within the brotherhood. They laughed, reminisced, and shared how the fraternity shaped their character, values, and sense of belonging. It was a reminder that legacy doesn’t just live in the past — it’s alive in the ways we show up, connect, and influence those around us every day.

What struck me most was how intertwined legacy is with health — emotional, social, and even physical. When we contribute to something greater than ourselves, our lives gain meaning. Research continues to show that having purpose supports mental health, increases resilience, and can even promote longevity.

Legacy gives us a sense of belonging and helps define who we are, especially during times of change or uncertainty. It’s not only about achievements or milestones; it’s about the quiet, consistent actions that ripple outward and inspire others.

This week, let’s make legacy intentional.

Try these daily reflections and actions to strengthen your sense of purpose and connection: Monday – Purpose Write one sentence that defines your broader purpose: “I am to… for the benefit of…”

Share it with someone you trust.

Research on family systems and attachment suggests that human beings are biologically wired for connection — our nervous systems regulate through closeness, not isolation.
