BACK TO HIGH SCHOOL WEIGHT TMH HELPS KELLY REACH HER GOALS

I

n 2009, Kelly Graham wanted to have a third child, but at 321 pounds, she had difficulty conceiving. Kelly turned to a popular weight loss procedure – the gastric band or ‘lap band’.

Like many others who received a gastric band, Kelly soon started experiencing issues with acid reflux, difficulties keeping food down and pain after eating.

What was even worse was that the band didn’t really work for Kelly. In 2023, at 289 pounds, Kelly decided to have the band removed and chose the Bariatric Program at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare (TMH) to help her.

For her pre-surgery clearance, Kelly met with dietitians, a mental health counselor and Physician Assistant Greg Laffitte – all members of the bariatric team at TMH who help ensure each patient's long-lasting success after surgery.

After completing her pre-surgery requirements, Kelly met with Joey Jarrard, MD, FACS, FASMBS, the Director of the Bariatric Program and fellowship-trained surgeon at TMH Physician Partners – General Surgery.

After discussing her goals with Dr. Jarrard, he recommended she receive Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass surgery so she could reach her weight loss goals and help her with Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD).

Kelly’s surgery was a success! As part of TMH’s program, patients continue to see the bariatric team throughout their weight loss journey.

“I didn’t have a big weight loss goal in mind, but after talking to Mr. Greg, I thought – you know what? I’d like to be the weight I was when I graduated from high school, which was 165 pounds,” Kelly said.

“I applaud Kelly,” said Dr. Jarrard. “From day one, she was very motivated to feel better and improve her health, and she did just that! She’s happy.”

Kelly has lost 112 pounds since her surgery and is only 12 pounds away from her goal weight!

As someone who once served proudly as an Associate Professor of Clinical Mental Health Counseling at FAMU, it fills my heart to see such a strong woman at the helm, bringing bold vision and fresh perspective to one of our distinguished universities.

And to all the strong moms, grandmothers, aunties, fathers, guardians, and mentors—thank you for helping the children of our community navigate the start of a new school year. My own journey has been one of loss, resilience, and faith. By age 19, I had lost nearly all of my family except my beloved brother Michael. A first-generation American on my mother’s side, I was raised with a blueprint of compassion and perseverance that continues to guide me. From humble beginnings to serving as professor, therapist, mother, mentor, and now publisher, my purpose has always been clear: to empower others to find their voice, embrace their worth, and rise into their purpose.

t’s the 80s, and we’re wearing bright colors, parachute pants, one glove, wondering what happens when doves cry, and hanging out at the skating rink. Next thing you know, your face is breaking out, your emotions are a wreck, your parents know absolutely nothing about life—and then your period starts!

As we think back (and try to forget) the madness of adolescence, we’re catapulted into our current reality: the changes surrounding adult puberty and the cessation of the menstrual cycle, known as menopause.

Women come in all sizes, shapes, and lifestyles. Regardless, the organs that house our hormones and participate in the Perimenopause Party can, for some, be relentless! But don’t worry—these quick tips will make surviving this stage a breeze.

First things first: accept the things you cannot change. As surely as your period begins, it ends. All jokes aside, the emotions surrounding menopause can be traumatic for some. I found humor to be helpful.

Engage in healthy conversations in whatever way works for you— your physician, gynecologist, friends, social media influencers, or even a psychic.

There seems to be a laundry list of symptoms that sneak up on you: brain fog, weight gain, itchy skin, irregular periods, irritability… It’s a medical condition, but not a disease. And for goodness’ sake, take full advantage of blaming it on menopause!

Watermelon Feta Mint Salad

hen summer heats up, nothing beats a dish that’s cool, crisp, and effortless. This Watermelon Feta Mint Salad checks all the boxes—refreshing, colorful, and perfect for everything from a casual poolside snack to a chic dinner party side dish.

INGREDIENTS:

• 4 cups seedless watermelon, cubed • 1 cup cucumber, sliced into half-moons • ½ cup crumbled feta cheese • ¼ cup fresh mint leaves, torn • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil • Juice of 1 lime • Salt & freshly ground black pepper, to taste

DIRECTIONS:

• In a large bowl, combine watermelon and cucumber.

• Drizzle with olive oil and lime juice, then gently toss.

• Sprinkle feta and fresh mint over the top.

• Season lightly with salt and pepper.

• Chill for 15–20 minutes before serving for maximum refreshment.

INSTRUCTIONS:

• Hydrating & light – watermelon and cucumber keep you cool.

• Sweet + savory – feta balances the fruit perfectly.

Lily, if you’re reading this, here’s what I MEANT to say: “How did you write this tender, unput-downable story of three college friends whose fates collide decades after they meet? How did you make a love story so real and messy and beautiful?”

Just when I needed a cozy mystery with a touch of fantasy, along comes this yummy nugget of paranormal fiction! Married couple Arthur and Sal are totally normal, except for the fact that they are vampires.

Trouble finds them when the mayor of the town is found dead in their flower bed…two puncture wounds in his neck. To prove they are not the killers, Sal and Arthur embark on solving the murder with the help of a friendly werewolf barista and the elfin town coroner. Prepare to enjoy this charmingly glutinous bite of silliness!

F

rom the moment I stepped through the doors of Image by Lisa, an elegant beauty boutique nestled in Tallahassee’s Market Square District, I knew the evening would be special. There was a stunning backdrop of feminine décor and fresh floral accents, coupled with an indisputable buzz of happiness and celebration in the air.

The occasion? Tallahassee Woman Magazine’s 19th Anniversary - What a celebration it was.

It was standing room only, yet the space overflowed with warmth, laughter, and the unmistakable energy of sophisticatedly dressed and empowered women bonding in a special sisterhood.

Everywhere I turned, there were successful entrepreneurs, health and wellness professionals, educators, creatives, and community leaders—laughing, sharing stories, and greeting each other with joyful hugs.

What made the evening truly special was more than the delicious hors d'oeuvres, champagne toasts, and the picture-perfect setting.

For me, it was the comforting sense of connection that was felt throughout the room.

It was wonderful to see new friendships blossom over heartfelt conversations. As someone who recently returned to Tallahassee after living in another city for 17 years, I am comforted by the reminder that Tallahassee is home to a vibrant, talented, and beautifully diverse community of women.

Cassie Loving: Finding Strength Through Faith, Family, and Purpose Cassie’s journey is one full of rich, meaningful moments—with plenty more rivers to cross and mountains to climb. Born in chilly December in Brooklyn, she grew up in a lively blended family with lots of siblings and a house full of love.

Her parents gave her solid advice early on: faith in God comes first, followed by education, hard work, and personal responsibility—always in that order. Those values stuck.

Two sayings have echoed through Cassie’s life: “If you make your bed hard, you have to sleep in it,” and “You reap what you sow.”

These simple truths remind her to own her choices and put good energy out into the world.

Today, Cassie’s life is full of blessings. She spends her time pastoring at Chaires Community Kingdom Center, supporting women in recovery, and cherishing moments with her three grown children, seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Helping others heal and grow—spiritually, emotionally, and across generations—is what fuels her joy.

She’s especially proud of the women who believed in her when she didn’t believe in herself. Her sister Pearl spoke life into her during a dark time, and Kay Freeman, a supervisor, pushed her to return to school and keep reaching for more.

To young women dreaming big, Cassie says: “Look in the mirror. The woman star-

Far too often, I’ve had the hard task of counseling and encouraging individuals and families forced to choose between rent and groceries. It’s one of the many signs of a broken system. I believe affordable housing should be aligned with a fair, livable wage.

explains: “We as a world have spent so much time developing and enhancing things to meet the demand and need of a consumer model that we never stopped to think about the consequences or realities of those decisions.

So many communities in America have been stripped of natural farmland that once grew and provided for their people.

As a child, I would visit my great-grandfather’s farm, and we would eat fruit straight from the trees. It was free and plentiful. I would certainly like to bring back agriculture in every community and teach it—along with horticulture—in every elementary school across the globe. Community fortitude is being challenged by the large pockets of food disparities in this country.”

Jacinta lives by a simple truth passed down to her: “Your word is your bond.” It’s the anchor that keeps her faith, work, and passion to uplift others steady.

WOMEN TO WATCH N E W S | A W A R D S | M I L E S T O N E S These trailblazing sisters have been recognized as the first African American sisters from Florida to attend the U.S. Naval Academy.

They are certainly dynamic young women representing Tallahassee well as they make their mark serving our great country. They both acknowledged the Office of Congressman Lawson for the opportunity to be selected from a highly competitive pool of applicants. The encourage other women to consider attending the Academy.

Carina and Aida Richardson

Carina Richardson, a Rickards IB alum, graduated from the Academy in 2022 and in August of 2024 earned her Naval Flight Officer wings of gold in August, 2024. Currently, women comprise approximately 11.3% of tallahassee woman | 31 | fall issue 2025

Naval Flight Officers, while men account for 88.7%, according to Zippia. She flies a Boeing P-8 Poseidon used for anti-submarine warfare, intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance.

She has earned the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade and is stationed in Whidbey Island Naval Base, Washington.

Aida Richardson, a Leon High alum, starts her third year in Annapolis, Maryland studying aerospace engineering. She is also the manager of the Naval Academy's lacrosse team.

Dr. Michelle Mitcham, PhD, LMHC, NCC, a professor, licensed clinical mental health counselor, CEO, and publisher of Tallahassee Woman Magazine (TWM), wears many hats. But no matter which one she dons on a given day—educator, mother, counselor, community leader—it’s her voice and her unwavering purpose that anchor it all.

Born in Detroit and shaped by strong matriarchs, Michelle credits her mother’s spirit, the women who poured into her life, and every hard-won lesson for the depth of resilience she brings into every room. “My resilience was born in Detroit and refined through decades of personal evolution,” she says. “My vision comes from being able to see what doesn’t yet exist—and believing that it’s possible anyway.”

That belief has fueled her journey to becoming a beloved and influential voice in the Tallahassee community and beyond. As Publisher of Tallahassee Woman Magazine, she has reimagined what it means to hold space for women’s voices—especially those who are too often overlooked.

Storytelling as a Sacred Act One moment that stands out in Michelle’s publishing journey came after she wrote an article on self-worth. A young woman reached out, saying the story gave her the strength to leave a toxic relationship and return to school. “I cried when I read it,” Michelle recalls. “That’s the power of storytelling. One woman’s truth can become another woman’s turning point.”

That belief—that words can heal, that voices can rise and ripple through generations— is the through-line of Michelle’s life’s work.

While publishing challenges her to grow as a businesswoman and innovator, it is counseling that grounds her.

As a clinical mental health counselor, she offers therapy through virtual platforms, creating safe, accessible spaces for people to explore their pain, growth, and transformation. “Sitting with clients in their most vulnerable moments—whether across the screen or in person—reminds me of the resilience of the human spirit. It’s sacred, humbling work.”

For Michelle, the roles of counselor and publisher nourish one another. “Publishing has stretched me the most—it demands constant innovation, creativity, business strat-

Michelle is also deeply grateful to her husband, Dr. Kerry McCord, for being a steadfast partner in this shared journey. “Together, we’ve created a rhythm rooted in purpose, peace, and shared growth.”

Redefining Balance and Boldness Balance, for Michelle, is not about perfection or symmetry. It’s about alignment— being fully present in the moment and grounded in what matters most. As a therapist and wellness advocate, she teaches her students that true balance begins with intention, self-awareness, and compassion.

e recently celebrated a big win in our law firm; an entire restructuring that was over two years in the making. Our COO, without whom this would not have been possible, explained the journey in graphic terms. She drew an inverted bell curve with five key points. At the beginning of our journey we had uninformed optimism about how obvious the solutions were and how easily they could be accomplished. That quickly deflated into informed pessimism, which is a euphemism for the slap in the face reality gave us when we tried to turn a cruise ship on a dime.

We continued our descent until we reached rock bottom, the valley of despair. That is where courageous conversations were had and hard decisions were made. The valley of despair is where we had to resist every urge, impulse, and instinct we had to quit. Yet we persisted.

As we began our ascent, our next stop was informed optimism. That was sort of like the morning after, where we had been through the darkness and were beginning to see a path towards the light. Finally, we arrived at success!

I’ve heard the valley of despair referred to as “the dip.” Coaches like to encourage you not to “quit in the dip.” That makes sense because the reason it is so bad at that point is precisely because you need to keep going. That is exactly when you should not quit. For whatever reason, what you have been doing isn’t working and you need to pivot. That is when you should lean in.

Listen to the universe, don’t fight it. To me, this is the exact right time to pile it on. Whatever brought you to the dip doesn’t matter. Stop, realize you are there. Feel it. And spend time to think about what else you know you need to deal with, but you’ve been kicking that can down the road. Stop it. Do it now.

Complacency disrespects the gift of life. Maybe you’re in the wrong ro-

mantic or friend relationship. You may be in an unfulfilling, though comfortable, career. Are you carrying on your family’s business because you love it or out of obligation? You only get one life that you know of, why waste it because you’re not brave enough to take risks and endure some pain in pursuit of greatness?

Our natural tendency is to try to make bad things go away as quickly as we can. If we have a headache, we take a pill. If we lose a job, we get another one. If we get our hearts broken, we get right back out there and give someone else an opportunity to disappoint us.

Although that may be natural, it’s not in our best interest. If we were really looking out for ourselves, we would take the time to examine what is causing our headaches, why that job didn’t work out, or why that person was not right for us. We are so eager to get pain behind us that we don’t take the time to address what is causing the pain which dooms us to keep repeating this fruitless cycle.

If you are experiencing a low, this is the time to clean out your closets, update your personal financial goals, and check your credit score and begin any needed repairs. This is the time to receive bad news. Once you know it, it has no power over you. All there is to do now is get through it and rise above it.

If you know you need to end a relationship, do it when you’re already down.

If you need to reconnect with someone but fear the reaction you’ll receive, do it now. If it ends terribly, at least you tried, you got your answer, and you no longer have that worry clouding over you.

Nothing could be worse than overcoming something awful just to go back to a ho-hum reality. Whatever is hanging over you, whatever tough decision you need to make, do it in the dip. Then come back stronger!

wish I could tell you I always knew what leadership looked like. But for a long time, I confused it with people-pleasing, telling people what they wanted to hear to avoid conflict or keep operations smooth. In reality, that approach created more tension than clarity.

It wasn’t until I leaned into my version of quiet confidence, balancing empathy with logic, that I began to lead in a way that felt true to who I am: someone deeply in tune with emotions and fiercely savvy in business.

Despite the long-standing history of governance, there is no single path to leadership, especially for women.

For years, we have been expected to lead like men to be taken seriously. But more and more, women entrepreneurs and changemakers are rewriting the rules and bringing authentic power to the table.

Today’s woman leader doesn’t just command; she collaborates. She knows that empathy is a strength, that intuition can drive innovation, and that success is defined by more than revenue. But this journey isn’t without its challenges. Imposter syndrome still creeps in, funding gaps persist, and the balance between ambition and burnout is fragile.

If there’s one truth I’ve learned, it’s this: power lies in consistency. Showing up every single day, putting in effort, and being who you say you are, that’s what builds trust. And trust is what great leadership is built on.

recently had the chance to see two truly powerful women on different magazine covers: Anna Wintour and Susan Taylor.
