€76,052 in funding a big boost for South Dublin under the Built Heritage Jobs Leverage Scheme Fine Gael Senator for Dublin SouthWest, Cáit Keane, has welcomed the announcement by Minister for the Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, that Dublin South-West is to receive €76,052 in funding under the Built Heritage Jobs Leverage Scheme. This funding allocation decision was announced in principle by the Minister as part of a national allocation of €5,000,000. The funding will assist 8 projects in the Dublin South-West area and 618 projects nationwide. “These projects will allow for a range of important conservation works to take place at protected buildings in all parts of Ireland, and will generate and support significant employment

in the conservation and construction industries and in specialist trades. By making it a condition of the scheme that taxpayer funds will at least be matched by private funding, initial figures provided to the Department indicate that the €5 million BHJLS will unlock €16 million in private funding for these projects. “The funding through supporting a significant number of projects on protected buildings across Dublin South-West and the wider country, will generate employment in the conservation and construction industries and specialist trades. This is great news for Dublin South-West in terms of conservation of our protected structures and also for tradespeople and those who

work in the construction and related sectors. “Of the 618 structures approved nationally, the majority are nineteenthcentury houses - ranging from farmhouses to glebe houses, to suburban villas and townhouses - followed by churches and country houses. The repair and conservation of a large number of thatched structures will also be funded. The main type of work to be funded is roof repairs such as replacing/renewing slate, leadwork, flashing and timbers. In Dublin South-West, the variety of projects approved for funding includes eighteenth century houses, mills, a school and a weir. A full breakdown of projects and funding for Dublin SouthWest is available here:”

Please read this testimonial from Yvonne, a satisfied patient. I decided in May last year to finally get

something done about my teeth. My daughters Debs was coming up in November and I wanted to look good in the photos for her. At 48 years old and after years of neglect I knew my mouth was in very bad shape. I booked an appointment for a local dentist; he x-rayed and gave me a treatment price and plan. Jesus, it was so expensive, I was devastated I couldn’t afford it. A girl in work had recently had work done and I knew she had been away. She recommended the team from Kombined Medical. I was nervous about going to Turkey as I’d never been but I decided to get a price at least. When I contacted them they asked me to forward copy of x-ray. Within a day I had an answer, their dentist had suggested the identical plan but at half the price. He had attached photos of similar work he had completed which my Irish dentist never had. The team from Kombined Medical organised flights and accommodation too. I travelled late September and spent 10 days altogether. Dr Serhan is a gentleman, his English was perfect and he explained everything to me before we started. The team from Kombined Medical were in contact with me the whole time, making sure I was comfortable and understood and was happy with everything. 6 months later Debs finished, photos taken (with tan too!!) teeth finished :) I could not be more pleased, should have done this ages ago, I feel so

confident now. I would highly recommend Kombined Medical to anyone. In fact my hubby and I are going back to Turkey in August, so he can have his done. Thanks Kombined Medical xx Yvonne, Dublin 8

Tourism figures continue to rise – set to continue with €0 travel tax Fine Gael Councillor Brian Lawlor has welcomed the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office for overseas visits to Ireland and predicted a further boost after the travel tax falls to €0 next week.

The number of visits to Ireland for the period December 2013 to February 2014 increased by 11.3% compared to the corresponding period 12 months ago. “With regards to overseas visitors, these figures suggest that the positive momentum generated by The Gathering in 2013 is being maintained into 2014. We are seeing strong numbers from our most important markets like Great Britain, which is up 14.1%, North America, which is up 16.7%, and Germany, which is up 6.3%,” Lawlor explained. Comparing the 3-month period of Dec ’12 – Feb ’13 with the period Dec ’13 – Feb ’14: •

Overall trips to Ireland were up by 11.3%;

Great Britain was up by 14.1%;

Mainland Europe was up by 3.5%;

North America was up by 16.7%;

Visits from the rest of the world increased by 20.6%.

“Fáilte Ireland’s targeted marketing strategy in Britain appears to be paying off. Also, the Global Greening campaign, where 70 iconic sites across the world went ‘green’ to mark St Patrick’s Day, was even bigger and better than ever before, truly capturing the imagination of people everywhere. The reduction in the air travel tax to zero comes into effect this month. This initiative has already resulted in a number of carriers adding new routes into Ireland and will also help in terms of our competitiveness as a tourist destination,” he added.

BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma

Captain America: The winter soldier

Do you like swords so large they could cut a car in half? Have you ever wanted to take control of an androgynous man wielding a malleable scarf in order to battle a sword brought to life and given human form? Do you wish senpai would finally notice you? Then it’s time to throw down with BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma, the newest version of the over-the-top heavy metal fighting franchise from Arc System Works. For long-time devotees, the additions to the roster of characters, the changes to existing favorites, and some added gameplay mechanics breathe new life into the series. However, there’s a lot to love here for players new to BlazBlue, or one-on-one fighting games in general this is BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma Beautiful high-definition sprites, and vibrant, hand-drawn battle backgrounds lend a striking presence that makes Chrono Phantasma stand out among the crowd of contemporary 3D fighters on 2D fields. Each combatant features hundreds of unique frames of dynamic animation, bringing graphical impact to a gallery chock-full of unique characters.BlazBlue’s combat system encourages you to play as offensively as possible with a plethora of aggressive tools, so the action rarely slows. Characters can dash, air dash, high jump, double BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma brings the very best in 2D fighting to a new level with redesigned moves, new characters, 30 hours of story and more.

Joe and Anthony Russo’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier is perhaps the greatest film to come out in the wake of those developments. One part tense 1970s-esque political thriller with very contemporary themes of government surveillance and preemptive strikes, and one part giant adventure with colorful heroes and spectacular action, the film is everything anyone could want from a comic book movie and will stand as one of the best of all time.

Over the top brawling:Persona 4 ArenaInjustice: Gods Among Us -- Ultimate Edition Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 jump, jump cancel, and defensive roll, all in the name of getting close and dishing out punishment. Once you start to get a feel for the controls and BlazBlue’s mechanics, you find yourself thrust into frantic fights which push you to constantly keep up the pressure while simultaneously staving off your opponent’s blistering assault - an exhilarating combination. Though its many options can look intimidating, Chrono Phantasma does an outstanding job of initiating players of all skill levels into the world of BlazBlue via plentiful tutorial modes (first introduced in BlazBlue: Continuum Shift). They run from the basics to unique mechanics, including how to chain attacks into graphically stunning combos, and how to approach advanced concepts like creating mix-ups or applying throw pressure. But where Chrono Phantasma really goes above and beyond is in teaching characterspecific tactics. Its well-done strategy tutorials detail each character’s individual strengths, as well as the fundamentals of their high-level

The new sequel is a character driven story that is as much about Captain America (Chris Evans) fighting a wide-spread and powerful enemy as it is about him finding a place in the modern world, adjusting his life completely after having grown up in the 1930s, fought in World War II and been frozen in ice for 60+ years. A soldier throughand-through, he teams up with the intelligence agency S.H.I.E.L.D. as a field agent working dangerous missions around the world, but questions some of the work he is doing when it doesn’t fully live up to his moral code. Things only get worse when a shocking and devastating incident leaves Cap unable to trust anyone or anything – and leads him on a path to discover the truth about who he is really working for and who is really in charge.

gameplay. Its cast of insanely imaginative characters has always been one of BlazBlue’s biggest strengths, and Chrono Phantasma continues the tradition. Seven entirely new combatants enter the fray, such as Azrael, a tricky brawler who can confuse his opponents by dashing around them to inflict obscene amounts of damage, and Izayoi, a versatile swordwielder who gains more powerful abilities as she successfully lands more attacks. The returning characters have equally creative mechanics, such as Relius’s use of a mansized puppet to attack from various angles, or Valkenhayn’s power to transform himself into a blindingly-fast wolf. While the roster might not match Tekken Tag Tournament 2 or Street Fighter X Tekken in size, each character has a look, and play style that’s uniquely their own. This plentiful variety gives players of every skill level something to learn and master. Chrono Phantasma’s story mode takes a different, slightly disappointing approach from its predecessors. Individual storylines are out, replaced by three main plots which converge into a true ending. This creates a little less variety than in earlier versions of BlazBlue, though that loss is somewhat mitigated through the variety and sheer volume of the other single-player modes. For example, BlazBlue’s addictive take on the staple survival mode, called Abyss Mode, allows you to delve into dungeons, and modify characters’ base attributes in order to conquer increasingly difficult challenges. When you finish plundering the depths of Chrono Phantasma’s single-player modes, you can take your hard-earned skills online. BlazBlue has traditionally featured wellimplemented netcode throughout its life, and Chrono Phantasma is no different. The quality of the matchmaking services more than makes up for the lack of additional multiplayer novelty modes, as bouts between players with decent connections are decided with very little in the way of noticeable lag. Many of the opponents I faced were located in Japan, and while there were some noticeable latency problems in our connection relative to the few Americans I fought, I was able to fight somewhat responsively.

It’s a mark of a great script and a great edit if you can look back at an entire film and not find a single extraneous scene, and that’s just one of Captain America: The Winter Soldier’s many hallmarks. The script by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely is taut and well-structured, the layers of the film’s mystery unfolding gradually and leading to an ambitious third act filled with important consequences. Every scene that doesn’t directly relate to the plot adds numerous layers to the characters and their relationships, from Cap and Falcon meeting during a jog around the National Mall to the patriotic superhero learning about his own heroic, historic past during a trip to the Captain America exhibit in the Smithsonian. Not too much can (or should) be said about the villains of the movie at this time, as part of the joy in a conspiracy thriller is not knowing which characters you can really trust, but it is safe in that respect to talk about The Winter Soldier, played by Sebastian Stan. As a brainwashed assassin, the character isn’t overly complex on the surface – personality tends to be one of the things washed away in the brainwashing process – but he has tremendous plot presence, both actively and thematically. The Soldier makes a formidable physical foe for Captain America, possessing incredible strength, amazing agility, and a crushing metal arm, but more powerful is his existence as a literal ghost from the hero’s past who has come back to haunt him in the most horrific way imaginable. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a spectacularly-made, tense, thrilling ride, and whether you go to the theater for the blockbuster action or the exciting story, you will leave more than satisfied.

Tallaght MusicScene

The budding young talant of Sandii Jane This editions music act is Sandii Jane a budding young singer. I had a chat with here to get to know a bit more about her and her music, here’s what she had to say;

Tell me a bit about yourself and how you became a performer? I was brought up on music as a kid. My Dad played in bands for years, my Grandad is still gigging and I think music is just something that was passed down and now really important to my family and I love to be a part of it and I have been singing as long as I can remember Tell me about the music you used to listen to when you were younger that inspired you? I always remembered listening to the likes of Stevie Wonder, Jamiroquai, Steely Dan, Earth Wind and Fire, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles and Pink Floyd because they where like bible CDs in the house growing up, and I feel I’m heavily influenced by all these from being embedded on my brain all my life And giving me a huge love for soulful music and the likes What is your earliest memory of being interested in music/performing? I think it was being like 2 or 3 and getting up to sing I can show you the world from Aladdin at one of my dads gigs and only knew like one line but that was the day he realised I had a note in my head I think How would you describe your style/genre? Do you perform a lot of cover songs or is it mostly originals? I think I’d be classed as a soul/blues singer and I do perform a lot of covers and enjoy it but am at the moment working towards getting my original music out there and there’s nothing more rewarding than letting people hear your own songs and getting a good reaction from them. What would you say is your biggest achievement in regards to your performing so far? I have really gotten to work with a lot of great bands and musicians over the past few years I’ve gotten to tour with the stars from the commitments for the last while and have gotten have so many great experiences already so early into this music scene and look forward to seeing more What are your hopes for the future? One of my future hopes is to release my single “Mistakes” in the next month of so and to hear back that people enjoyed it and that will hopefully give me the push I need to get on with writing. What’s your favourite memory of performing? I don’t have one favourite memory as such it’s more of a favourite feeling of nostalgia I get every time I perform which reminds me of getting up singing with bands as a child and the buzz I would get from it.

Is there any advice you would give to anyone hoping to start a career in music? Someone that would be in the same place as you were at the beginning? All I can say is enjoy every second you get to perform and show the world what you have got without fearing about the worst that could happen

The Burning Question: Have you planned your summer holiday? Yes, Im going to Tenerife with 5 of my friends for 2 weeks in August. It will be my second time there. I cant wait to get away from all the moaning and groaning going on here. Louise 23, Tallaght No we haven’t had a family holiday now for 5 years. We used to go every year but times have changed and we can’t afford it at the minute. The way things are now in Ireland it’s very difficult to survive never mind go on holiday. Mark 42, Springfield I have been saving for over a year and sold my car 3 weeks ago. I am going to Canada in May for a year. I have work lined up there and all so I am looking forward to it. I was going to go to Australia

but it’s the same as being at home because it’s full of Irish now. Jonathan 22, Old Bawn I think we will just have a few weekends in Ireland if the weather is as good as last year. Hopefully it will. Last year we didn’t expect the weather to be as good and it cost a fortune because everybody just seemed to get up and go but this time I’ve planned a little bit better. Lisa 28, Firhouse. I don’t know yet. We don’t have anything planned. It depends on the work situation. My work depends on good weather so its not easy to go on holiday in the summer when you only get about 4-5 months of decent work in the whole year. We might do something around late September, early October. Noel 35, Rathfarnham.

Talk to Tina

Tallaght Express’ very own agony aunt is here to help you. No problem too big, noproblem too small, Tina is here to give you the advice you need and steer you in the rightdirection. Don’t worry, it’s completely confidential, just send in your problem to inatallaghtexpress@gmail.com

Dear Tina, am 19 and in a relationship with a 25 year old man. We have been seeing each other for 3 months. We fell in love within days of getting together and had the best relationship till just a few weeks ago. He asked me to stay with him for my 2 week break from college. I was a bit scared cos 2 weeks is quite a long time but I agreed. He said it was the best time he has ever had in his life but I needed to get away quickly just to get some space. For the whole time I felt as if I was chained to him. I felt like an old married couple. No matter what he was doing he wanted me to do it too, watch TV, take a bath, cook – everything was too much together. He didn’t even like me to talk on the phone to my friends or Mum. I told him I had to go home for a few days just to get some space. I was so isolated in his house and had to do everything his way. When I wasn’t living with him, he would still come straight from work and take me out somewhere nice. Since I’ve been staying with him, we only go out to the grocery store. I felt he was trying to control my every move and was always watching me. He wants me to move in with him in the summer, eventually get married and have kids. We have had lovely times but now I feel suffocated. I feel awkward going back there and he has begun to irritate me but I do love him and I know he loves me. What should I do? Karen I

Dear Karen He may be a great guy but you do not seem to be ready to settle for a life of playing house and grocery shopping. It is not good that you feel overwhelmed by your need for space and become irritated. You do have a loving relationship but it may not be ready for home making chores yet. You were happiest when you were out having fun and you need to continue doing this. Many young people give up their time for exploring the world too early. You may even outgrow this man. Most people change and grow a lot from age 20 to 28. Your feelings are being stifled. You want fun, freedom and space which this relationship is not giving you now.

Listen to your heart and go back to the dating stage. You do not need to break up with him but you do need to find yourself as an individual before making a commitment like this. Otherwise – you could wake up in 5 or 10 years and realise you have missed out on so much. Pay attention to your gut feeling. Dear Tina, I think I could be in real trouble. I am with my boyfriend over a year and in the beginning he was so loving and kind. He told me he had a really hard time with his Dad when he was growing up but we never had a row – but that has changed in the last few months. We fight all the time now and he gets very nasty and abusive to everyone for no real reason. He argues and calls me horrible names and then the next day phones up to apologise, tells me he loves me and that he didn’t mean all the stuff he said. He says he is so scared that he is going to lose me. I haven’t seen him all week. His Mum says he is really confused and I should just give him some space and time to think about what he is doing. He told her he is afraid that if he phones me that I won’t talk to him but if I phone him he either doesn’t answer or hangs up. I feel very hurt and hard done by as none of this is my fault. His Mum says he will come around if I give him time and she really does not want us to break up. My stomach is churning as I just sit here waiting for something to happen and I have begun to get really jumpy. I do want this relationship to work out because I know how kind and loving he can be Confused, Mary. Dear Mary, This is a really hard position to be in. In your heart you know that your boyfriend’s problems probably go back to his childhood with his father. He got used to a pattern of abuse and has brought that to the relationship with you. When he gets close to you he begins to act out the abusive pattern that overshadowed his childhood. He may not even realise that he is doing this or why. His main problem seems to be that his anger gets out of control and he lashes out at people who are close to him – usually you. This is a really difficult place for you to be. The reality is that this will probably not stop without professional help and may get worse over time. This is a destructive pattern of behaviour that has no end – only intervention. That intervention can be counselling, family therapy or couples counselling. You also need to learn how to deal with what is going on for you and avoid being trapped in a cycle of abuse. You cannot continue to live in fear or walk on eggshells around him waiting for him to snap again. You say you are jumpy when he is not there. Just think how you will be when he is around. Because this relationship is potentially dangerous emotionally and perhaps physically you have to give him an ultimatum. Tell him that you love him and want to be with him but you cannot stay in the relationship unless you both go for professional help immediately. Don’t put if off until the next time he becomes abusive. You don’t need any more proof that this happens

Pat Keogh: former principal of Solas Chriost I met up with Pat Keogh recently. He was principal teacher of Solas Chriost for 25 years, now retired. I had two questions for him: What was the most rewarding part of his work as Principal teacher? and What was the most difficult aspect of his job? “The most rewarding aspect beyond all else”, he replied, “was helping children to learn and think for themselves, particularly, the shy and vulnerable child and the child with special needs. Children need to be given the language, the vocabulary but most of all the ability and skills to think critically and independently. They need self-esteem and courage to articulate their views in their own defence and in the defence of others. Too many people are led or misled by others. This applies in all walks of life including the political party whip system. Members of our Dail aligned to political parties are told what to say and directed in how to think. It is most rewarding to see a child overcoming a problem. I found that the overwhelming majority of teachers are very kind, compassionate and caring people. They make every effort to understand each child. I often found that the quiet, unassuming, bashful person is the best teacher. Teachers act in loco parentis. They get to know a child in a holistic way, in all dimensions; their social, psychological, physical and emotional abilities and failings. They see

the child in the social context in how s/he interacts with other children and with adults. Outside agencies, working with children, will not get the in-depth knowledge and insight into a child’s thinking that a teacher gets; from the literacy & numeracy aspect to the child’s engagement in art, physical education and play time. I enjoyed the challenge and opportunity to work with teachers in helping to understand and assist a child encountering a problem. We will not meet a problem child. But, we will encounter a child with problems. Children will never cease to amaze. They will brighten the day in the midst of work overload. The system will pressurise and test the resolve of any Principal. The child will uplift. On one occasion, in my role as Principal, I was addressing infants at an assembly, giving some instructions on how they should behave in the playground --- remember always be kind and gentle to other children --- no bullying, no name calling, no fighting, no pushing in the line. Then, out of the moment’s silence that followed one child shouts out– and no giving the fingers like this, as he held up a closed fist with an extended middle finger. Of course I did agree with that child but I could not demonstrate it as he did. And as I was leaving the classroom another little child raised her hand to speak. I asked ‘can I help you’ or have you something you want to tell us; No! She said, but will you come to my birthday party on Saturday? You cannot refuse and you cannot accept. All I could say was; well isn’t that lovely you are very kind to invite me, but I might be too

old and too big. “No! You ‘ll be all right”, she said, my granny and granddad will be there too. The most difficult and frustrating aspect was dealing with the rigidity and bureaucracy of the HSE,’s senior speech and language therapists. As individuals, working in the school, I had the privilege of working with lovely, very capable, dedicated, friendly, efficient speech and language therapists. But, the culture of ---- long drawn out meetings ranging from three to five hours, often teasing out minutiae in some aspect of the criteria established for a child’s admission to specific speech and language classes --- was frustrating. Discussions often went around in circles and finished where they started. I believe in a set, structured time limiting agenda. I also believe that most of the work on agenda for committee meetings should be done in advance of the meeting. The idea of a raw, open, any other business, type of meeting, is a recipe for an ever-lasting session. I also had difficulty with --- the culture of waiting, something endemic in the health system, --- waiting for appointments then a number of people are given appointments for the same time, sitting in waiting rooms, waiting for all types of services including waiting for treatments and waiting on trolleys. When discussions become bogged down on whether an articulation problem is a specific speech and language impairment or not, one has reached a ridiculous point. A speech articulation problem is a specific speech problem and using any type of criteria to argue against that is incredible. When a child

is deprived of a place having met all the criteria including a legitimate assessment by a speech and language therapist for admission but has not received a block of therapy that is farcical, particularly, when the therapists are not there to administer the therapy, or they are engaged in meetings. Why does the child have to wait when s/he is not provided with this service that they control? Why are hours spent at meetings when therapy work is required? Therapists are trained to assess speech and language problems and to administer therapy as required, not to be meddling in schools’, and, other non-therapy issues. Schools should devise the policy of enrolment for all enrolments in the school. Long discussions often take place on whether a child meets criteria, even when there is no other child awaiting placement in the class, and that child meets 95% or more of the criteria. When the criteria became more important than the child, and, a break was taken for a cup of tea, I felt uncomfortable. I believe passionately in child-centred education. Control should not outweigh the service. The child must be more important than the criteria. When criteria are used to exclude a child from a service more than to include him/her I feel uncomfortable. Rules, regulations and criteria should be there to benefit a child. Of course, fair and just application of rules and criteria must be applied, but, ensure that the child is at the centre and not just treated as a paper child, there to meet criteria.

DO’s and DON’Ts of Shopping for Summer Clothes

DO

– Think realistically. Unless you’re going away on a sun holiday there may not be much point in stocking up on sun dresses and super-short shorts. (Hopefully I’ll be wrong!) But keep in mind, that Irish summers usually happen for a very short period of time (I hear its on a Tuesday this year) You might benefit more from buying full length trousers but in light materials and having one or two outfits for the odd sorchers.

disheartening than figuring out that you new favourite tank top keeps riding up your stomach because you bought the wrong size!

DO

– Remember to buy sun cream! Again, we may not have the most sunny of summers but we’re bound to get the odd opportunity to tan… But remember that a lobster-esque skin tone doesn’t suit anyone – FACT!

DO N’T – Waste you’re summer sitting in doing

DO

nothing! It comes but once a year and its one of the best times to make new friendships, experience things you might never usually do and its also a perfect time to make new memories that you can fondly reminisce on when the rain is belting down come September.

DO

Enjoy it safely!

N’T – Buy clothes a size too small to ‘motivate’ you to get your ideal bikini bod’! Buy for what size you are now because nothing is more

Flower Power in Solas Chriost Primary School Children from 5th class at Solas Chriost National School held a plant sale as part of the South Dublin County Enterprise Board ‘Bí Gnóthach’ programme. ‘Bí Gnóthach’ is an educational programme that introduces students to many aspects of setting up and running an enterprise. Students chose a plant sale for their business as they had been learning about plants in science. They started planting in January and grew all the plants for the plant sale at the back of their classrooms. The businesses were called ‘Flower Power Pots and Plants’ and ‘Grow Yo’ and sold a range of plants such as tomato plants, broad beans, onions, mustard seeds and a mix of flowers. Decorative pots were also sold along with the popular grass heads and gardens in a jar. The children learned many skills by partaking in the programme and raised €500 for their school.

The new BMW X4 The new BMW X4 is based on the technical blueprint of the BMW X3, but displays a sporting character very much its own and takes dynamics to another new level. That much is clear when you view the new model head-on. The large air intakes positioned on the outer edges of the front end and the character lines in the front apron allow the BMW X4 – with its signature BMW twin headlights and front fog lamps (both optionally with LED technology) – to maximise its visual presence on the road. The roofline reaches its highest point above the driver and then swoops down smoothly to the trailing edge of the tailgate, mimicking the design language of a classical sporting coupe. The signature swage line running along the flanks of BMW models is split into two on the X4. The first section rises dynamically from the front wheel arches to the rear door handles, while the second part draws the eye to the muscular sculpting of the rear wings. The rear end, complete with L-shaped LED lights in exclusive X4 design and diffuser-look styling, likewise highlights the outstanding dynamic ability of the new BMW X4 – even before it turns a wheel. The driver and front passenger sit 20 millimetres lower than in the BMW X3. In conjunction with the two-seat look of the rear, this accentuates the coupe character of the new BMW in the classy and exclusive interior as well. At the same time, the X4 offers generous levels of space for up to five people and – thanks to the standard 40:20:40 split rear seat backrest – impressive variability. In keeping with the vivacious character of the new BMW X4, customers can choose from three petrol engines and a trio of diesel units from the BMW EfficientDynamics engine family, whose output ranges from 135 kW/184 hp to 230 kW/313 hp. All the engines meet the EU6 exhaust gas standard. The BMW TwinPower Turbo technology of the state-of-the-art engines offers a promise of superb performance married with exceptionally low fuel consumption. For example, the flagship petrol unit in the BMW X4 xDrive35i (fuel consumption urban/extra-urban/combined: 10.7/6.9/8.3 l/100 km [26.4/40.9/34.0 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 193 g/km) develops an outstanding 225 kW/306 hp and peak torque of 400 Nm (295 lb-ft). The BMW X4 xDrive35i requires just 5.5 seconds to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph). And an equally impressive performer in terms of power delivery and CO2 efficiency is the BMW X4 xDrive35d (fuel consumption urban/extra-urban/combined: 6.7/5.5/6.0 l/100 km [42.2/51.4/47.1 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 157 g/km). Its 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line engine generates 230 kW/313 hp and peak torque of 630 Nm (465 lb-ft). The BMW X4 xDrive35d accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.2 seconds.

The new-generation 2.0-litre diesel engine in the BMW X4 xDrive20d (fuel consumption urban/extra-urban/combined: 5.8–5.4*/5.1–4.8*/5.4– 5.0* l/100 km [48.7–52.3/55.4–58.9/52.3–56.5 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 141–131* g/km) with eight-speed Steptronic transmission also sets the benchmark when it comes to fuel economy and CO2 emissions. Its four-cylinder unit produces 140 kW/190 hp and peak torque of 400 Nm (295 lb-ft). For more information contact your local BMW dealer.

ALL-NEW FIAT PANDA CROSS DEBUTS 2014 GENEVA MOTOR SHOW The all-new FIAT Panda Cross made its world début at the Geneva Motor Show on March 4th, 2014. Building on the successful formula of the FIAT Panda 4X4, a car that’s as happy in city traffic as it is taking on the toughest off-road conditions, the new Panda Cross offers even more all-terrain capability thanks to a host of new features, more performance and improved ground clearance. Key to the additional off-road ability of the FIAT Panda Cross is its standard ‘Torque-on-Demand’ transmission system, which utilises the vehicle’s ELD (Electronic Locking Differential) and advanced ESC (Electronic Stability Control) systems to manage the engine’s torque delivery in difficult driving conditions. The advantages of this system are that it is both fully automatic and requires zero maintenance and it is controlled by the new Terrain Control selector, which offers the driver three driving modes depending on the driving situation: • AUTO - Automatic distribution of drive

between the front and rear axles in accordance with the available grip • LOCK - 4WD is optimised for off-road use at speeds of up to 30mph, with distribution of torque controlled by braking slipping wheels and thus transferring the drive to those with the most grip • HILL DESCENT - For optimum handling of particularly steep hill descents or when driving down extremely bumpy laneways In addition, the FIAT Panda Cross is also fitted with oversized all-season 185/65R15 tyres, larger than those fitted to the standard Panda 4x4, which were developed specifically to combine drivability and traction in low-traction situations with positive on-road handling on both wet and dry surfaces. The suspension of the FIAT Panda Cross has been developed to combine on-road comfort, handling, road-holding and safety with improved off-road characteristics. An independent MacPherson suspension is employed at the front while a torsion beam layout has been developed for the rear to accommodate the all-wheel drive

mechanicals, thereby saving weight and providing better ride and acoustic characteristics than the semi-trailing arm arrangement of the previous generation Panda Cross. Styling-wise, every detail of the Panda Cross has been designed to make it immediately recognisable and distinctive: The front end features a new light clusters, a new bumper and new fog lights integrated into front facia. New LED DRLs are also built into the skid plate, which is finished in a satin titanium colour with perforations that recall the Panda’s signature “squircle” motif. The new FIAT Panda Cross is due to go on sale in the autumn with pricing, final Irish equipment specifications and technical details to be announced closer to its launch. To find out more about the new Fiat Panda Cross log on to www.fiat.ie or pop into your local Fiat dealer.

NEW NISSAN QASHQAI – Best selling car in Ireland Figures released by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI), show the all new Nissan Qashqai Range as the most popular car of choice in Ireland this month. Despite only coming onto the market at the end of January the brand new Nissan Qashqai is proving once again to be a very popular choice with Irish consumers. To date, Nissan have sold 2,057 new Qashqai’s, accounting for 4.12% of the total car market. Commenting on Nissan Qashqai’s success, James McCarthy, Chief Executive of Nissan Ireland, said: “We are delighted that the new Nissan Qashqai is once again proving to be one of the most popular cars on the mar-

ket. The previous model pioneered a whole new type of car and surpassed all expectations, selling over 20,000 units to Irish customers since it was originally launched in 2007. It was hard to see how this level of success could be maintained with an ever-increasing set of competitors following in its footsteps - until we saw the all new model late last year. Incredibly the all new 2014 Nissan Qashqai has once again laid down the gauntlet in terms of style, technology, driving excitement and most importantly value for money and we’re very confident that the Nissan Qashqai will remain one of Ireland’s most popular cars for many years to come”.
