Promising start to 2014

with another drop in Live Register figures established, with the number of people out of work falling month on month. We know that this is due to new jobs being created in the real economy, with 58,000 more people joining the workforce over the last 12 months. We must build on this progress in the year ahead.

Fine Gael Councillor Brian Lawlor has said the latest Live Register figures are a great start to the New Year for the jobs market. The figures released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) show that the number of people on the Live Register has dropped for the 18th month in a row, and is now at its lowest level for four and a half years. “These figures underline the fact that a very positive trend has been

“Coupled with the huge demand for Irish bonds in this week’s move back into the international money markets, these positive jobs figures represent a great start to the New Year. We need to build on our improved reputation abroad and the feeling that things are getting better here at home. “I am pleased to see that there has been a drop in the number of people who are long-term unemployed. But I believe we need to make further progress on this area in particular. The Jobs Plus Initiative, under which the Government covers a quarter of what it costs to hire someone who has been on the Live Register for more than 12 months, is helping to make a dent in the problem. But we must also continue to hone the Pathways to Work programme to ensure

every possible support is being provided to help people get back to work. “Unemployment is on a downward trajectory, with particular successes in the IT, agri-food and tourism sectors. This is very encouraging, but the Government fully recognises that unemployment rates remain far too high and that we have a long way to go. We need to get key areas – such as retail, construction and domestic banking – back to sustainable levels. Through the Action Plan for Jobs, led by Minister Richard Bruton TD, we have the first cross-government approach to job creation, and I am confident that this year’s Action Plan will contain a further suite of measures to broaden jobs growth. “We’re currently experiencing the fastest rate of jobs growth since 2007. When this Government took office, nearly 7,000 private sector jobs were being lost every month. Now, almost 5,000 are being created every month. I am confident that we can accelerate this progress in the year ahead.”

2014 Sports Capital Programme opens this Friday 17th January Minister for Communications, Energy & Natural Resources and Labour TD for Dublin South West, Pat Rabbitte T.D. is urging local clubs and sports rganisations to apply for the 2014 Sports Capital Programme, which opens for applications this Friday, 17th January. The 2014 round of sports capital funding will allocate €40million to local sports clubs to improve and develop facilities such as changing rooms, pitches and floodlights, as well as providing funding for regional facilities “The application process for grants has changed, and is now carried out through a new online registration system. “It means it is now quicker and easier than ever before for sports clubs to apply for grants, and will ensure a more streamlined and user-friendly service “Applicants must register online by February 7th, and the deadline for applications is February 28th “I would advise local sports clubs who are interested to consult the Department of Sport’s online guide to registration, available at: www.dttas.ie/sport/ english/sports-capital-programme”

January Blues’ Targeted by Irish Mental Health Charity What: Free, professional online mental health support offered by Irish organisation. Who: Turn2me – A registered mental health charity. Contact: Eoin O’Shea, Director of Research & Policy – 086-8548386 / eoin@turn2me.org Turn2me.org, an online mental health charity supported by the Health Service Executive through the National Office of Suicide Prevention, is offering intensive online support to members of the public following the Christmas period. Despite being a happy time of year for some, many people experience increased stress and difficulties over the Christmas period. Financial pressures build, any stresses or strains within a family can become highlighted, and the amount of preparation for family reunions can result in many feeling overwhelmed. When January hits, it may be a good time to attend to our mental health needs. Bearing this in mind – and with support from the Health Service Executive – Turn2me are offering a unique form of online support to anyone residing in the Republic of Ireland. As part of its recently-launched ‘Engage Programme’, members of the public can receive: • •

Up to eight free weekly counselling sessions online. These can be accessed from any computer with an internet connec-

• • •

tion. Online Support Groups are also offered. Members’ mood can be tracked using an online tool called ‘Thought Catcher’. People can receive this support from fully qualified professionals at no cost whatsoever.

Turn2me’s services are available to anyone over 18 years of age who is experiencing difficulties in relation to their mental health or well-being. These can be very varied and we do not turn people away because of any problem being ‘too small’. Eoin O’Shea is Director of Research & Policy at Turn2me, as well as a qualified counselling psychologist, states: “Online support is becoming a popular point of contact for many people in terms of its accessibility, convenience, and the appeal of online privacy when seeking mental health support on the Web. We know that, in line with greater usage of the internet generally, more and more people are turning to online solutions for mental health difficulties they may be facing”. Visit the website at: www.turn2me.org and complete the ‘Engage’ online application – a member of our staff will contact you in a few days to arrange things from there. If you have any questions before applying, just email us at: engage@turn2me.org

DO’s and DON’Ts of Sticking to Your New Diet!

We

all know the feeling of giving up on our diets at some point in our lives; it can make you feel very defeated! Hopefully these tips help you stick it out a bit longer and help you achieve your desired results!

DO

– Research! Find out everything you can about the diet plan you’ve chosen to work with and see if it is genuinely suited to you. Everyone is different and there is no point choosing a vegetarian diet when you tuck into a rib eye steak once a week!

DON’T

– Expect fast results. Such a big change WILL take time, you need patience in order to finally see some results but don’t get discouraged by the fact that you cant see your six pack in the mirror after just completing your set of crunches.

DO

– Set yourself small goals every few weeks to keep yourself motivated. When you start reaching the small ones and you are aware of what your body is capable of then step it up a notch

C outure B eauty – In dulg e Yo ur s el f I spoke to Danielle Millea, the owner of Tallaghts top Salon Couture Beauty to get a look at the ins and outs of running her business, here’s what she had to say; Q1.Tell me about your background and how your business started? I’ve been in the industry for 10 years and I knew going in to Beauty College that I always wanted my own salon. The opportunity arose in October 2011 and although I was only 25, I knew I was ready. Q2. Was it difficult to get couture Beauty up and running? It was already set up as a salon when I took over but I always had ideas and visions of where I wanted Couture Beauty to go and take it to the next level. It was hard as I had no previous management experience so this was my biggest challenge. And after 2 years I fell I’ve finally achieved what I set out to do and have many goals for the future Q3. What inspired you to open your own business instead of working in someone else’s salon? It was always a lifelong dream to own and run my own salon. So it was never a case of

“if” it was a case of “when” Q4. What kind of treatments do you offer? We offer a wide variety of treatments from waxing to facials, from massage to nails. A proud achievement of ours is being one of the first salons in Tallaght that offer the HD Brows. It’s turning out to be one of our most popular treatments. Q5. Can you tell me a bit about your alternative treatments? Our alternative treatments are a different range of massages. We have a deep tissue massage specialist. We also do Hot Stone massage which induces relaxation through heat, also by using the stones the effects of the massage are much deeper. Q6 I seen on your website that you offer maternity treatments, can you tell me a bit about those? We had an expanding number of pregnant clients due to the baby boom! We didn’t want our clients to miss out on being pampered at such a special time of their life. So there was only one range we wanted. Because of its “No Nasties” philosophy and luxurious treatments Mama Mio was the only choice for us. Our clients can choose from a full body massage-

Mellow Mama, A foot treatment- Lighten-Up, or a tummy treatment- Yummy Tummy. We also have a wide range of homecare products that are not only exclusive to pregnant ladies. All of us girls here use the Mama Mio Products Q7.Do you have any special offers on at the moment? We have a fabulous offer on at the moment where we offer four fantastic treatments personalized to your needs for €100. And each month we do a different offer. We ask our clients to call in or check our Facebook page for special offers. Or go to our website www. couturebeauty.ie .And who can forget our most famous offer! We do half price waxing each and every Tuesday. This books up quickly so be in fast to get an appointment. Q8. What are your hopes for the future? In the future when someone thinks of a beauty salon I want Couture Beauty to be the only salon that comes to mind. I want Couture Beauty to be the best around and keep going from strength to strength. Q9. Would you consider opening another salon? You never know what the future holds………

and set higher goals. Always stick to within your confines, you need to learn to walk before you can run!

DON’T

– Forbid yourself from eating your favourite foods! Everyone deserves a treat every now and again, especially after working really hard, just don’t pig out! Everything in moderation. Also, don’t think of it as a diet, it’s a lifestyle change, one that will benefit you to no end as long as you doing it healthily and avoiding all the celebrity endorsed fad diets, lets face a cold reality here – they don’t work!

DO

– Speak to your doctor before deciding on any diet or exercise regime. They will be able to advise you how to approach the matter safely so you don’t injure or harm yourself in anyway – physically, mentally and health wise too! Remember that you’re not doing this for other people, you’re doing it for yourself!DO’s and DON’Ts of Sticking to Your New Diet!

Game Reviews Movie Reviews www.tallaghtexpress.com

PlayStation 4 Review Taken from polygon.com In the seven years since the introduction of the PlayStation 3, we’ve seen our gaming consoles transform into living-room hubs through constant evolution and software updates. Those updates weren’t always smooth – though on PS3, they were always happening – but it’s easy to see just how far the platform has come. Meanwhile, the designers of the PlayStation 4 were taking notes and designing a console that, feature by feature, sought to address the failings of its predecessor. The PS3 was notoriously difficult to program for, thanks to its proprietary silicon. So the PS4 was built to be developer-friendly, with a familiar, PClike architecture. The PS3 was announced with a bizarre, boomerang-shaped controller, and launched with the rumble-free Sixaxis controller before settling into the never-great DualShock 3 controller. So the PS4 comes with the DualShock 4, inarguably the best controller Sony’s ever made. And the PS3 launched at an abnormally high price point, costing $200 more than its competition. So the PS4 carries a far more aggressive price, asking $100 less than the competition this time around.

While Sony in 2006 was focused on driving adoption of the Blu-ray standard, envisioning another home media boom that never quite materialized, Sony in 2013 has no such distractions. The PS4 isn’t built to sell 3D TVs, or Blu-ray discs or any other corporate mandate. It’s a gaming console, a clear message that Sony has been quick to repeat. That focus has resulted in a console that’s better positioned than the PlayStation 3 was in 2006 to compete in an expanding turf war for the living room. But that same focus has also kept Sony from taking the kinds of chances that make generational leaps so exciting.

Anchorman 2:

The Legend Continues Review By Katie Devereux The legend that is Ron Burgundy has returned after nearly 10 years since our previous encounter with the rambunctious news anchor. Starring Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd, Christina Applegate, Steve Carell and David Koechner, Anchorman 2 gives you the laughs it promised it would. Although a lot of the material has a slightly recycled feel, in the sense that some jokes were very similar to those found in the first movie, there is still a good chunk of new hilarity! After being fired from his co-anchor job a ‘WBC News’ Ron doesn’t know what to do, when one day he is head hunted for a job in New York City at the worlds first 24 hour news station ‘GNN’ So he rallies up the old Channel 4 news team (NEWS TEAM ASSEMBLE) and off they head to the big city! This film will have you splitting your sides, and although it did fall just a little short of my personal expectations, Anchorman 2 is still one to watch!

New Year Resolutions & How to make them Last! By Katie Devereux It’s that time of year again (Well, it’s the beginning year but you know what I mean!) Resolutions are in full swing, and for many, this may be the most work you actually put into them until it gets to New Years Eve again and you feel bad for letting yourself down, so you swear you’ll stick to it this time and the whole ordeal turns into one big vicious circle! In our last issue we looked at why it is that so many resolutions fail, let’s be a bit more optimistic about it now shall we? Lets look at what we can do to make them last! There are recurring favourites every year when it comes to resolutions, such as, ‘lose weight’, ‘get in shape’, ‘take better care of myself’ (I suppose they could all fall under the 1 resolution) ‘save money’, ‘quit smoking’, ‘get organised’, ‘spend more time with family and friends’ and there are so many others that I cant even begin to think of them, but lets just stick to these ones shall we… 1. The ‘I Swear to Lose Weight, get in Shape and Take Better Care of Myself’ Resolution: This resolution is used worldwide! But how many people actually stick to it?! Studies have shown that only 12% of people are sure that they will succeed in their bid to a new and healthier self! Do you want to be part of that 12%? Or better yet, push the percentage higher?! You just need to be realistic about this resolution, for example you’re not going to find any quick fix that will melt all the weight away in a matter of two months! The fact of the matter is, by this time next year you may have only shifted a fraction of the weight you’re aiming to lose. You just need to be sure that you set yourself a small goal to reach about once a month. Don’t rush yourself and then get annoyed when the results don’t work out the way you want them to, make sure you approach this in a realistic way with a level head, be patient with the process and eventually you will be at the stage you want to be at! Remember, perseverance is key. 2. The ‘I Swear to Save More Money and Handle my Finances Better’ Resolution: Who doesn’t want to be in a comfortable financial situation? The main culprit for realising that you have little to no money a day or two after payday is … Wait for it … IMPULSE BUYING!! You may not even realise you’re doing it, but breaking this habit may prove to be easier than you thought. Set aside a jar for yourself, or better yet, one of those money boxes that can only be opened with a can opener and at the end of every day throw some change into it, whether its floating around your coat pocket or its weighing down your purse/wallet a bit too much, a little bit every day adds up to a lot more than you’d think. Another technique I find quite helpful is leaving money at home. If im going out shopping, or

for a night out, or even just getting out of the house for an hour or two, try leaving the majority of your money (or your card) at home. If you don’t have it, you can’t spend it! 3. The ‘I Swear to Quit Smoking’ Resolution: And good for you! There are two ways to approach this. You can quit cold turkey, just wake up and decide you’re finished, there will be no more and that could be just fine for you! Or you may want to wean yourself off the cigarettes, gradually cutting back the amount you smoke each day until eventually there are no more smokes to cut back on. You may find this easy, you may find it hard but there are a few things you can do to help you along the way, for instance, the new rage of electronic cigarettes or anything from the ‘Niquitin’ range of products, you will find a method that best suits you, and when you do, STICK WITH IT! You’ll never regret it. 4. The ‘I Swear to be More Organised’ Resolution: The only way to stick to this resolution is to just do it. No procrastinating, no excuses, just do it. You’ll know yourself what it is exactly that you want to organise and you’ll know the best way to do that that suits you the best. Organising different aspects of your life can drastically change your mood and general outlook. If you have organised yourself, you’ll find its easier to pay attention, your mood improves, you can even find yourself feeling more energetic. There is no end to the benefits of this resolution, you just need to take control and (again) just do it! 5. The ‘I Swear to Spend More Time With my Family and Friends’ Resolution: I really like this resolution. It’s simple, it’s meaningful and if this is the resolution you set yourself, it really says a lot about what kind of year you want to have. With the ever growing popularity of the internet and just about any social networking site you can think of, wanting to spend more time with loved ones is rare. Put down your phone, take your hands off the keyboard and instead of interacting online, get up out of your seat, leave your house and see your friends. ‘Hang out’ the way you used to. In regards to family, request one day a week where you all sit down to dinner together, or watch a movie or even play a board game. Set aside specific family days where no one is allowed their phone or access to any kind of social network, even if its just for a few hours. Making an effort to strengthen the bond with your loved ones really goes a long way! So whether or not you have chosen any of these resolutions, you know that all you need for a successful year is optimism, patience and just a bit of will power! Who knows, you might even surprise yourself!

Tallaght MusicScene

Luke Clerkin Talks to Tallaght Express We had a chance to sit down and talk to Luke Clerkin, a Tallaght local whose future is looking bright! We wanted to get to know him a little more, here’s what he had to tell us! 1. Tell me a bit about yourself and the music you play. Well, I’m 22, I’m from Springfield, I study music management in Ballyfermot and I’m also a volunteer fundraiser for TeenLine Ireland. At the moment I’m playing on my own, but I was in a band called Clover Coast for over a year until December just gone. My influences range from U2 , Oasis and Journey to the likes of The Doors and The Beatles. I’m mostly described to have a very similar voice to James Blunt and also Noel Gallagher as well. 2. Do you prefer to play solo or in a band? I love playing with a band because it takes off an awful lot of pressure having three or four other people behind you and you also make more of an impact. Also, the song writing duties can be shared within a band and if all the band members are capable of writing songs, there’s never really a limit to how much you can write together, it’s always good to have another person’s input! 3. What is your earliest memory of being interested in music/performing? My earliest memory of being interested in music would have to be when I was really young I used to drive around to places with my dad in his van and he would have sergeant pepper playing on the cassette player. I loved the Beatles growing up and ‘Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds’ was my favourite song. 4. How would you describe your style/ genre? Do you play a lot of cover songs or is it mostly originals? Well my songs are often said to sound like Oasis, when I’m on my own, but this varies I reckon if I’m playing with a band. I play mostly originals and if I do decide to play covers, they’re often just songs that mean something to me. 5. Who is your inspiration? Noel Gallagher, his lyrics helped me through a lot of hard times, so they’ve inspired me to do the same for other people. 6. What would you say is your biggest achievement in regards to your performing so far? My biggest achievement in regards to performing would probably be playing The Green Room in The Academy on the launch night of the first single I ever released which was Never Alone. I wrote it with a very good friend of mine and an even better songwriter, Gavin Doyle. We released it in aid of Teen-Line Ireland

and it featured some of the best singers and musicians in Tallaght and other areas. So being on stage in a room with the people I love and promoting something very close to my heart was probably the proudest moment of my life so far. It was also a great feeling when we got to number 16 in the ITunes Charts within a day after it was released. Knowing that there were people out there downloading our song and supporting a much needed cause was just great 7. What are your hopes for the future? I hope to keep on playing and performing and hopefully, I’ll find a band with the same drive and ambition, to make it in the music industry. I’d also like to write songs for

other singers because it’s what I love to do; I love it as much as I love performing. I’ll be continuing to help out charities and raise awareness for causes that need it by setting up events. I’ve recently set up an events management and promotions company for other acts and causes that need an extra push, it’s called Louder Voices Promotions, so I’ll be focusing a lot on that too. 8.What’s your favourite memory of performing? That would have to be when I performed my first ever original when I was 11 or 12 at St. Mark’s G.A.A. talent show, ‘You’re a star’. I was in a band before it but they kicked me out for some reason, so I entered on my own and got through to the finals and the band

The Burning Question: Which do you Prefer? Text, Call, Email or Handwritten Letter? Seamus, 70, Tallaght – Oh I much prefer a nice handwritten letter. All this texting and emailing stuff, I don’t understand it, but there is nothing more personal than a hand written letter. Anne, 25, Bolbrook – I think I’d have to say texting! Its so fast and to the point, I don’t like talking on the phone because I don’t want other people to hear my conversation. Emily, 45 Springfield – You can’t beat an oul natter on the phone!! I

love ringing people and finding out the latest gossip (Laughs) Stephen, 30, Tallaght – I spend a lot of time in work and by the time I get home I’m very tired, so I rely on email to chat to people, whether its my actual email or on a social networking site, that’s how I do most of my communication. Séanín, 18, Kingswood – I love texting all my mates, I’d be lost without my free texts!

didn’t get through! That was when I knew I wanted to be a singer! 9. Is there any advice you would give to anyone hoping to start a career in music? Someone that would be in the same place as you were at the beginning? Keep at it, never stop for anyone; if you want to achieve greatness, you need to work for it and once you have the ambition and drive, the work isn’t hard. TOM CREAN ANTARCTIC EXPLORER IN THE CIVIC THEATRE

Upcoming Highlights @ Civic Theatre

The Civic Theatre Tallaght 27 Jan - 1 Feb Tickets €10 - €20

Presented by Play on Words Written and performed by Aidan Dooley Tom Crean, the intrepid Antarctic explorer and one of Ireland’s unsung heroes, is brought to life in this dramatic and humorous solo performance by Aidan Dooley. Crean’s story is a testament to human fortitude in the face of the hostile elements of the Antarctic. His 36 mile, solitary trek to base camp during the Terra Nova expedition to rescue his comrades Teddy Evans and William Lashly has been described by Antarctic historians as “the finest feat of individual heroism from the entire age of exploration”. He was subsequently awarded the Albert Medal for his bravery. ‘A remarkable and uplifting piece of theatre, gives everything and asks nothing.’ -Sunday Independent Monday, 27th January – Saturday, 1st February 2014 @ 8pm Admission: €20 & €16 concession, €10 opening night (Mon, 27th Jan)

Tallaght Express’ very own agony aunt is here to help you. No problem too big, no problem too small, Tina is here to give you the advice you need and steer you in the right direction. Don’t worry, it’s completely confidential, just send in your problem to tinatallaghtexpress@gmail.com

Dear Tina, I have planned that my New Years resolution will be to lose weight as I’m quite a heavy for a girl of 24 years. I cut out junk food and fizzy drinks from my diet a few weeks ago but over the Christmas period I let myself indulge a bit. Whenever I tell someone about my resolution they snigger and make some form of comment about how I won’t stick to it. Don’t get me wrong, the people I surround myself are very caring and loving, but their doubt is coming from generalities as they believe that everyone makes the new years resolution to lose weight but they never stick to it. How can I prove to them that I am serious about it, I want to prove them all wrong! Soon-To-Be Skinny, Avonbeg Hi Soon-To-Be, First of all, let me say, fair play! You seem to be quite serious about making such a big lifestyle change. It’s not going to be one bit easy, but as long as you stay motivated and set yourself some mini goals along the way, you should shift the weight

in no time! As for the lack of motivational comments you’ve been receiving, I say welcome them, because there is no better feeling to achieving something that others thought you never would! Regarding the indulging over the Christmas period, there is nothing wrong with that, you need to think of you’re decision not as a diet, but as a change in lifestyle. Don’t forbid yourself to have a treat every now and again, just have it in moderation! As long as you stick with the mentality you have at the moment, you’ll pull this resolution off without even breaking a sweat (apart from when you’re exercising of course!) I wish you the best of luck! Tina. Dear Tina, I was hoping you could help me with something. I have this really close friend, we’ve known each other for years, I can tell her everything, I trust her completely but there’s a problem… I’ve really fallen for her, but every time I try to act on it, she tells me I’m like a brother to her… How do I get passed this? I really want her to be my girlfriend! Anon, Home Lawns Hi, Anon. I’m sorry to hear that you’re attempts at taking your relationship to the next level hasn’t gone as well as you had liked but unfortunately, if that is the way she feels, there isn’t an awful lot you can do to change her mind. She may not want to ruin the special relationship you two already have. Maybe sit down and talk to her, tell her exactly how you’re feeling and she’ll tell you how she’s feeling too. If it’s meant to be, it

will be! Hope this has helped, Tina. Dear Tina, I’m 20 and I still live at home with my parents. They are constantly nagging me to get a job and it’s really annoying! What difference does it make to them whether I work or not?! All I do is sit in my room playing Xbox all day so it’s not like I annoy them or get in their way! How do I make them relax about it? Annoyed, Jobstown Hi Annoyed, I’m sure your parents are ‘nagging’ you to get a job because they don’t want to see your life go to waste. You say that all you do is sit in your room playing Xbox? I’m sorry but that is no way for a 20 year old to be living their life. I’m sure they would ease up a bit if you even start doing some chores around the house like cleaning the floors or the windows. Washing your own clothes or even the dishes? I think the reason they want you to get a job is to gain a bit of responsibility, you could start helping them out by giving them some money out of each wage slip to help pay bills, this will ease you into a more independent life style. If you lack motivation, you can go to your local employment centre and they will help you find what kind of career you might want if you haven’t already chosen. It can be a very satisfying feeling knowing you’ve worked hard to get something you want, I hope this has helped,Tina.

Motion on the abolition of Zero Hours Contracts welcomed

Chris Bond- Labour Party Councillor for Tallaght South has welcomed the passage of a motion calling on the abolition of Zero Hours Contracts. The Motion submitted by Cllr Bond also called for a tax rebate to be provided to employers in exchange for paying a Living wage of at least €10 per hour. Many of the fast food chains employ people on zero hours contracts only. ‘’Those who work in Jobs with Zero hours contracts have no guarantee of any hours during the week yet they must still make themselves available for work. This leads to inconsistent levels of pay at the end of the month, placing uncertainty on family and individual finances, and makes it difficult for workers to plan their life or organise childcare’’ The definition of a living wage is a wage that is sufficient to provide a basic standard of material living. In the European Union this is set at 10 euro per hour. ‘’As a Local Representative i deal with people on a weekly basis who are stuck in precarious work with poor wages’’ ‘’I believe that a tax inducement in exchange for paying a living wage is something that many employers will be willing to give a chance. The Government has already taken measures to reduce the cost of doing business such as the 9% Vat Rate, it is only fair that such savings are passed on to the employee through better wages’’ ‘’As well as the strong moral argument for a living wage there is a clear Economic Case. Wages are an important source of Demand within the Economy, and those on low income spend virtually all of their wages. When people spend more businesses earn more and this in turn generates more employment. Higher wages incentivise work, reduce dependency on supplementary Welfare benefits and boost receipts in PRSI, USC and VAT.’’

yummy recipes Stuffed Jacket Potatoes Serves 2 Ingredients: 2 Potatoes 2 slices of ham 50g of grated cheese Milk Butter Salt/Pepper Method: 1. Bake your potatoes in the oven for 45 minutes on gas mark 5/ 190 degrees or pierce skin with a fork and

place in microwave for 7 minutes (depending on size of potatoes) 2. When the potato is thoroughly cooked, cut in half length ways and scoop out the insides taking care not to damage the skin and put into a bowl. Mash with milk and butter then season to taste. 3. Chop up the ham slices and line the potato skins with it, then add the potatoes back in. Sprinkle grated cheese on top and place back in oven until cheese is melted and golden brown. 4. Serve with a side salad and tuck in!!

For a vegetarian option, place sliced

mushrooms in potato skins instead of ham! ******** Maltesers Chocolate Mousse Serves 4 Ingredients: 4 egg whites 70g sugar Pinch of salt 100g dark chocolate, broken into squares 2 x 37g packets Maltesers (holding back a few for the top) Method: 1. Melt the chocolate in a large heat-proof bowl over simmering water (making sure that the base of the bowl doesn’t touch the water) until the chocolate has completely melted. Set aside to cool. 2. Whisk the egg whites, sugar and salt in a large mixing bowl until stiff peaks have formed. 3. Beat about a third of the egg whites into the cool chocolate mixture. You don’t have to be delicate here: it’s just a case of introducing the egg whites to the chocolate roughly. 4. Tip the Maltesers into the bowl and lightly crush. Hold a few back for a garnish and fold the rest into the chocolate and egg white mixture. 5. Next, delicately fold the second third of the egg whites into the bubbly chocolate mixture until well incorporated and it gets lighter. 6. Finally, when all the white air pockets have gone, fold in the remaining third of egg whites into the chocolate mixture and repeat the delicate folding in technique until the mixture is a uniform texture and colour. 7. Pour the mousse into individual cups or glasses and chill in the fridge for at least 30 minutes. 8. Scatter with the crushed Maltesers before serving.

Gaelscoil na Giúise

Gaelscoil na Giúise opened its doors in August 2013 with a class of Junior Infants. It is the first multidenominational Gaelscoil for the area. Principal Fionnuala Ní Riain states: ‘We hope to provide an excellent standard of education for the children of the area, with an emphasis on Irish culture, sports, drama and music. Parents do not need to have Irish for their children to attend a Gaelscoil, only a positive and open attitude towards the language and a willingness to use whatever Irish you they may have. The school was founded and is being funded by the Department of Education. We are accepting children into Junior and Senior Infants for September 2014.’ Fón : 083 4424882 Rphost gaelscoilnagiúise@gmail. com www.gaelscoilnagiuise.ie Gaelscoil na Giúise Firhouse Community Centre, Ballycullen Drive, Firhouse, Dublin 24.
