Creation of 1,200 jobs every week shows the Action Plan for Jobs is working Most positive jobs figures in six years, says Fine Gael Councillor Brian Lawlor Fine Gael Councillor Brian Lawlor has welcomed latest figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO), which show that more than 1,200 new jobs are now being created every week. “These are extremely encouraging employment figures, which clearly show that the Government’s Action Plan for Jobs is working. What is particularly heartening is that as well as new jobs coming on stream, the rate of job creation is also accelerating sharply,” Councillor Lawlor stated. “The number of people in employment increased by 3.2% in the 12 months to the third quarter of this year. This is a significant jump from the 1.8% annual increase which had been recorded in the previous quarter. “The Government’s determination to support small businesses, attract foreign investment and target key growth sectors have all combined to contribute to this

growth in our jobs market,” he continued. “Employment has now grown for each of the last four quarters. Furthermore, it is important to point out that these figures cannot be attributed to emigration, as they show that the number of people at work has increased by 58,000 over the last year. These are new, extra jobs in the Irish economy. “In addition, in the last three months alone, 22,500 jobs have been created. The vast majority of new jobs are fulltime – in fact, 53,500 of the jobs are full-time. Long term unemployment is decreasing, and the sustained increase in jobs in the tourism sector is proof that the Government took the right decision when it maintained the lower VAT rate and scrapped the air travel tax. “These are the most positive jobs figures we’ve had in six years. We still have a lot of progress to make, if we are to recoup all of the jobs lost during the Fianna Fáil years. However, the Government is on track to exceed its target of creating 100,000 new jobs by the end of 2015.”

New National Groundwater Protection map announced

Geological Survey of Ireland delivers programme results A new national groundwater vulnerability map, to help protect vital water supplies, has been produced as part of the most comprehensive groundwater mapping project undertaken in the country to date, Minister Fergus O’Dowd has announced. Significant findings from the Geological Survey of Ireland’s (GSI) multiannual programme – which covered a range of activities where geology is critical to society – were announced today at the Geoscience 2013 conference. The conference, sub titled GSI Geoscience Initiatives: achievements, applications and future directions, was attended by over 200 delegates at Dublin Castle.Amongst the most significant new maps are the Groundwater Vulnerability Maps, showing those areas where the water supplies may be most at risk of pollution or contamination, and conversely those areas safest to develop wells and water supplies. Celebrating the conclusion of this phase of the GSI’s programme, Minister for Natural Resources, Mr Fergus O’Dowd TD, commended “both the worldclass science and the many inter-agency partnerships that underpinned the projects.

“I am delighted at the new mapping and datasets available, particularly in how they will assist planning and development of our natural resources – information that could have significant positive impacts for the regional economy.” This first digital, National Groundwater Vulnerability Map is produced to help protect groundwater and drinking water supplies. The Minister said he expected this will be used by Local Authorities, the Environmental Protection Agency, consultants and individuals, to better understand and mange land use and development that have the potential to impact on groundwater.. The Minster pointed out that this is the culmination of over seven year’s painstaking work. An allocation of National Development Plan funding in 2007 allowed the accelerated completion of the previously county-based mapping programme that was started in the 1990s, in partnership with Local Authorities. Five geologists were employed for this project, recording information along more than 40,000 km of road, covering more than 50,000 km2, to complete the project.

Also launched at the conference is the Aggregate Potential Map for Quarry Planning. GSI has produced two new National maps which indicate the potential for the occurrence of aggregates (rock particles used in construction), one for sand and gravel and the other for crushed rock. The maps, coloured coded to show the potential, have been developed on a county basis and will be of interest to both Local Authorities to assist them in their planning and environmental role, and to suppliers of aggregates as they indicate areas which may be considered for future development. The Minster commented “ we are seeing some recovery in the construction sector – it’s important we take a long term perspective and realise we need to ensure these vital building materials are available into the future.”

of the Water Services (No. 2) Bill, which provides for the transfer of water services functions from the local authorities to Irish Water. Welcoming its publication, Minister O’Dowd said: “This Bill paves the way for fundamental reform of water services delivery in this country, services that currently cost over €1billion a year. A national, public utility providing water services and infrastructure, underpinned by a sustainable funding model, will help to ensure greater security of quality water supply for Irish people and the economy. Independent, economic regulation of Irish Water’s services, and charges, by the Commission for Energy Regulation (CER), will ensure customers are protected.” Irish Water is due to take over responsibility for the delivery of water services on January 1st 2014. Commenting on the Government’s proposed reforms, Minister O’Dowd stated: “In producing this Bill, the Government has charted a new way for water and wastewater service delivery. Through increased investment, Irish Water will be able to deliver the level of infrastructure needed to meet demographic, economic and environmental requirements in the years and decades ahead. This will help guarantee security of supply in the future for communities and businesses. It will also position

Ireland’s economy to attract waterintensive industries such as ICT and pharma-chem as the world faces a 40% water deficit by 2030.” Minister O’Dowd added: “The provision for service level agreements between local authorities and Irish Water, contained in this Bill, will see the continued involvement of local authorities in service delivery at the local level for the next 12 years. This will see the local expertise in assets management and operations combined with the considerable network and utility management experience available to Irish Water. I am very confident this will prove to be a positive collaborative arrangement.” On the provision for independent, economic regulation of the water sector, the Minister said: “Irish Water will be regulated from an economic perspective by the CER. Irish Water will be required to prepare water charges plans setting out details of its tariffs and related matters included payment methods and these plans, including the tariffs, will be subject to the approval of the CER. In discharging this role the CER will play an important role in controlling the costs of Irish Water and protecting the interests of customers more generally by approving codes of practice to be adopted by Irish Water. Work

Christmas Special

is being progressed on the approach to the proposed free allowance and affordability measures which will be introduced by Government to ameliorate the impact of water charges on domestic customers.” Minister O’Dowd also highlighted the Bill’s provisions regarding Irish Water’s plans’ coherence with national and regional policies. “Policy coherence between water and other sectors is fundamental to promoting balanced economic growth. Irish Water’s strategic plans will have to be consistent with the National Spatial Strategy, the regional planning guidelines and the Water Framework Directive’s river basin management plans. There will also be coordination between Irish Water’s capital investment plans, local and county development plans, and will be produced in consultation with the EPA and regional and planning authorities. This will help ensure coherence between water services and infrastructural planning and other socio-economic policies, driven by a long-term sustainable approach.”

“Dublin City Council and JCDecaux are announcing the opening of the excellent new dublinbikes station with 40 bike stands at North Wall Quay in the Docklands. We are also opening a new station today at Deverell Place, off Gardiner Street, and an extension to the popular Talbot Street station. These are the first of 58 new dublinbikes stations which will open between now and July 2014”, said Lord Mayor Quinn who also announced that an extra 50 dublinbikes would be available from today and that an additional eight stations will be open by mid December. This first batch of new stations will be located at:

Joanne Grant Managing Director of JCDecaux Ireland said “we are delighted to commence the expansion of the dublinbikes network which will integrate the scheme even further into the fabric of Dublin city. We would like to thank our subscribers for their support of dublinbikes and the people of Dublin for recognising the positive impact that dublinbikes has had on city life here in the capital. We intend to build on this and to continue to deliver a world class bike scheme to the city of Dublin.” Today’s opening was the first part of a €35m

expansion which will see the existing dublinbikes network increase to 102 stations and 1,500 bikes by July 2014. Critical to the expansion has been the support of the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport who have provided capital funding of €5.2 million in 2013 through the National Transport Authority. The Deverell Place Station has 30 stands and an extra 20 stands have been added to Talbot Street, bringing its capacity to 40. Larger stations are a feature of the expansion and will improve capacity considerably during morning, lunch and evening periods of peak demand. Extra bikes will be introduced in batches as new stations open. Members have taken over six million dublinbikes journeys since the scheme transformed public transport in the capital in September 2009.

Japan opens door to Irish Beef Taoiseach Enda Kenny has welcomed the announcement by Japan that it is re-opening its beef market to Irish exports. The decision means that Japan is open to Irish beef for the first time since 2001, and marks Ireland as one of a select group of countries allowed to export beef there. The decision to allow access for Irish beef to Japan comes after a meeting between the Taoiseach and Minister Coveney with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo. Bord Bia estimates that the short to medium term opportunity for Irish beef in Japan is worth between €12 and €15m with potential for significant expansion beyond that over time. Commenting on the

Japanese decision, the Taoiseach said It is clear that the agri food sector is a significant driver of economic growth and employment in the Irish economy. With Food Harvest 2020 we have established a vision for the sector, which is being delivered on through a positive and collaborative approach from Government, farmers and industry. Minister Coveney said: Japan is a sophisticated market with sophisticated consumer, who are seeking beef product which Ireland can provide. Japan also sets a benchmark for food safety standards, and for that reason access for Irish beef is very significant from a reputational point of view. The landmark decision taken today is the fruit of detailed

technical negotiations between my Department and its counterpart in Tokyo over the last two years, and is true testament to the quality of our beef output. Today’s announcement proves yet again the value of investing in our sustainability and traceability systems and more importantly being able to verify these claims to global customers. Ballycragh Park Playground receives Funding of €10,000

Crowe Enjoys “The Field” Sinn Féin TD for Dublin South West Seán Crowe has this week praised what he described as a fitting enactment of John B. Keane’s The Field performed in St. Anne’s GAA Club in Bohernabreena last week.

Local Fine Gael TD and Minister of State, Brian Hayes has this week confirmed that the Department of Children & Youth Affairs will provide €10,000 to South Dublin County Council to go towards the development of a playground in Ballycragh Park. Minister Hayes stated “I am delighted to announce that Minister Fitzgerald has confirmed to me that her department will provide South Dublin County Council with €10,000 to help develop

a playground next to the recently opened Ballycragh Community Centre.” Minister Hayes continued “This is a great day for the local community. For many years residents have been campaigning for a playground in the area. Ballycullen, Old Court and Ballycragh are areas that has seen rapid development in past decade with many young families. I recently had the opportunity to tour the community centre and meet with its dedicated committee.

The development of the playground will further enhance the centre and I warmly congratulate those involved in the campaign.” Minister Hayes concluded “While the funds do not cover the complete costs of the playground the Council have confirmed to me that they are hopeful of securing the extra funding required to allow the playground to be built in the new year.” Minister Hayes is pictured with members of the Ballycragh Community Centre Committee.

The production, brought to St. Anne’s GAA Club by the Glenasmole Drama Group was generously staged in aid of the vital Tallaght Rehabilitation Project. Deputy Crowe claimed: “I was delighted to attend the production of a story we all know and love in aid of the local Tallaght Rehabilitation Project. TRP is a centre that carries out fundamental support for drug and alcohol rehabilitation in our local

community. “This spirited show from the Glenasmole Drama Group not only supported the community financially but brought theatre outside the parameters of its traditional space providing accessible access to the arts. “On behalf of the Sinn Féin representatives in attendance, I’d like to thank those performers who shone in their roles as well as the entire Glenasmole Drama Group for a passionate delivery of John B. Keane’s 1965 The Field.”

Lots of Bling from Laura Lots of Bling is a charming little boutique found in Killinarden Enterprise Centre. With a warming atmosphere and prices to die for, you’d be mad if you weren’t interested in checking out their unique stock! I spoke to the owner, Laura to find out more about the shop.

Christmas Fairs and stuff like that because it’s nice to get the shops name in places other than Tallaght. Maybe somewhere down the line but at the moment, definitely no.

Q.Tell me a bit about your shop, how was it opened?

A. Yes, absolutely! I do a lot of custom jewellery so that entails customers coming to me and telling me what exactly it is they’re looking for. I’ve done jewellery for bridal parties so some orders could be really specific and the customer could tell me that she wants something with pearls, or I could get a woman that just says she wants bridal jewellery and I’ll have to kind of create something myself. I’ve also done jewellery for communions with the child’s names on them or colourful, festive and novelty styles. Whatever the customer is looking for I will work with them to try find the style they are interested in.

A. Well I had initially started with a Facebook page called L O B Jewellery where I was making small pieces of jewellery and I was getting messages from people asking if there was anywhere that they could come and see all the jewellery because it can be very hard to try takes orders over emails when you’re trying to talk about colour shades and stuff. So I decided that I would start looking in to getting a show room or a shop so my customers could come view my stuff. When I got the shop then I decided to start stocking clothes and other accessories too so the shop is now just called ‘Lots of Bling’ Q.What type of stock do you hold, what is your target audience? A. No, not really! The slogan is ‘Dresses, Jewellery and Accessories’ so they kind of cater to all ages really. The dresses and clothes would probably aimed be at anything from 20s, 30’s and 40’s. The dresses are a bit younger I suppose but other stuff in stock like the knit wear might be for someone a bit older. I change the stock so frequently because I only take 3 of each item so I think the age range changes a lot. Q.How long is your shop open? A. The shop was opened a year at the start of October just gone! I had a little celebration in the shop on the day with friend’s family and some of the customers that I had gotten to know over the year. I’m hoping to have many more! Q.Do you hope to open other shops too? A. Maybe… Possibly! Not at the moment because I’m very happy with the shop here and how it has been doing. I do a lot of

Q.Am I right in saying you make some of the jewellery yourself?

Q.Have you any special offers on coming up to Christmas? A. I will be announcing a date on my Facebook page (www.facebook.com/lob.jewellery) where I will be doing a half-price sale from 4 P.M. until 6 P.M. It will be like a little Christmas party here with drinks and nibbles and a fun shopping experience. Q.Generally, what is your price range? A. Well everything is priced low and at recessionary prices. The cheapest item in the shop would be €3 for the rings and I’d say the dearest price would be on the debs dresses and even at that, they are only €75. So for an average price you’re probably looking at something around €10 to €15. Q.What are your hopes for the future? A. To keep on going as I am here for the moment, but in the future I’d like to be able to hire someone to come work in the shop with me, or even further down the line I would like to have a nice little stall or pop-up shop somewhere so hopefully it all comes true! I wish you all the best Laura!! Merry Christmas!

Game Reviews

Most Popular Games This Christmas By Kevin Doyle] The Christmas shopping season is now in full swing, and if you’re anything like me, you’re hoping for either of the new consoles Xbox one, or the PS4. Now if you’re buying for someone else, be mindful of what console they play. Be warned, there’s every likelihood they will have already taken side in the console war, and hell hath no fury like a gamer on the wrong system! Do your homework and find out before committing to buying one, seeing as these are very expensive- €499 for the Xbox one, and €399 for the PS4, both of which could prove to be a costly mistake. Aside from the consoles themselves, 2013 has been a great year for game releases, with the likes of GTA5, CoD Ghost, BioShock Infinite, and FIFA 14. This is a quick run-down of what I think will be the most popular games this Christmas, and why. BioShock Infinite As the second game in the BioShock series, could this game live up to its name? Could this game be better than the first? Set against the backdrop of an alternate universe city-Colombia, a city in the sky in 1912, this was one of the games of the year for me. Visually stunning, with retro sci-fi technology, and characters that are padded out perfectly, this game ticks all the right boxes. Villains you hate, monsters you’ll never forget, it’s hard to pick fault with this game. The game is centred around the character Booker DeWitt. A guy with a shady past, who must recover a girl, so he can wipe his debt. Though he begins this story as an unlikely hero, his own individual back story is filled out, moving him away from the solitude of being a hired lone gun, into more of an Antihero, the person you want to and root for to win. Through your guidance, DeWitt moves through the game, doing both good deeds and clearly bad, though his words and actions make you feel like a fan of what he has done to accomplish the mission. This game keeps the player guessing, always wondering what twist is around the next corner, and this game has one of the biggest twists to a game I›ve seen in a long time, one in which you will talk to your friends about the following day, which is what games are supposed to do. Going into this game i was wondering if it could live up to its own hype, after the first BioShock game. Infinite not only lives up to it, but betters it. Character development and new combat techniques make this one of the games of the year, one in which any gamer would proudly have in their gaming library. GTA V Ah GTA. The game many of us played during our childhood. A game where stealing cars, shooting down helicopters and robbing banks is part of your daily routine. GTA V however, revamps the entire series, bringing an entirely new, fresh wave of anarchy. Centred around the fictional city of Los Santos, a sprawling metropolis

on an unprecedented scale, never before seen in a GTA game. GTA V developers made a big decision to give the player three characters to play as-Michael, a professional ex-con, who’s retirement isn’t going as smoothly as he had dreamed, Franklin, a former street gangster, now looking for real opportunities, and lots of cash, and Trevor, a violent psychotic, who’s main focus is driven by the chance of a quick high and the next big score. Each character plays and feels different, meaning the player gets to pick and choose who they like best, seeing as all three have individual traits and skills. This difference, gives the player the feeling of playing someone new, rather than just a carbon copy of the last character, with a new face. The sheer size of the game is unthinkable. Other games in the series gave you a city, and yes Los Santos is a city, but on an entirely unseen scale. This feels like an entire country is at your fingertips, awaiting you and your destructive violence. The changing landscapes play a big factor in this, from one minute being in the rich area surrounded by jewellers, nice cars and polite people, to driving ten minutes on the free-way into the rough neighbourhoods, surrounded by gun stores and gangs. I promise you, you will get lost in this game, and to be quite honest, that›s half the fun. Ending up in a military base, stealing a tank, and fighting off the army? What else is video gaming about? This game for me is endless fun, from the comical one liners the character says, to the complete and total freedom your given. As i said in my review a couple of weeks ago, i was never a big fan of the GTA games, but without a question, this game is immensely good fun and i will be playing it happily, for a long time. Call of Duty: Ghost Call of Duty. All you need to do is mention the name, and within seconds have a heated debate on your hand about which is the best one to date. Ghosts, is the newest title in the CoD franchise. This time around we see the player take on the role of a member of Ghost squad, an elite fighting force, few people know exist. The main premise of the game is there is a new world superpower, known as The Federation. As the game opens, we see The Federation using Americas WMD program known as ODIN against American soil, opening up their defences, allowing the Federation to push up from Latin America, and try seize control of The States. You and your team of elite soldiers, must fight off The Federation, and ensure America stays as the world’s biggest superpower. The multiplayer in Ghosts is the main focus for 90% of players. The multiplayer in any CoD is the main reason it sells so much. This year’s instalment was a huge let-down. Unbalanced weaponry, and useless perks, this game was a sad way to end the CoD

www.tallaghtexpress.com

legacy on current gen consoles. The map design (which has always been a bad point for the Developers Infinity Ward) is a serious issue. Long narrow corridors, huge open expanses and arrow straight sight lines, means this game is dominated by assault rifles and sniper rifles. This means SMG players, and players who enjoy close quarters battles, won’t stand a chance in a gun fight. In the previous CoD instalment, Black Ops2, the maps were designed in a way that, players wouldn’t always fight for the objective; they’d fight for strategic control of the map, and then advance to the objective. As I›m giving this a bad review, you might be asking yourself, why did i put in into the top games of the year? Irrespective of what I, or anyone else says, people are still going to buy it, people are still going to play it. Call of Duty isn’t just a game anymore; it’s an institution within gaming. FIFA 14 As with ever Christmas, EA released this year’s FIFA 14 just in time for the Christmas rush. This year’s instalment is at a much slower pace, meaning some player strategies, mine included, of sprinting down the wing and crossing a ball in behind the defenders, is going to leave them slightly disgruntled. Having said that, due to the slower pace, this means the action is constantly in the centre of the pitch, meaning that the player has to focus more on honing their tackling and crossing skill, rather than just the fastest player. Pushing the current gen consoles graphics to the limit, this is a visually enthralling game. Adding much more atmosphere to match days, with the

increased focus on the crowd, and on the camera angles being used. The matches are introduced, with exterior and interior shots of the stadium, showing the crowd, and showcasing the graphical horsepower, meaning the fans no longer look like cardboard cut outs, and photocopies of one another. Various other tweaks have been added to the game to give it a more lifelike feel, with two balls being thrown onto the pitch by overzealous ball boys, and commentary that will focus on the player with the ball, sometimes giving a brief history of the player, or slight facts that most people wouldn’t know. The current gen and also next gen inbuilt AI hasn›t had any drastic change to it, seeing as since the 2012 edition it’s one of the sharpest and crispest AI’s on the market. Also Xbox users get exclusive content in the form of a Legends Pack, meaning players of years gone by can also be part of your FIFA 14 Ultimate Team. Granted, quoting exclusivity isn’t something I’d normally do, but it’s a nice touch seeing faces like Alan Shearer, and Peter Schmeicel back on the pitch. Aside from increased graphics properties, and the addition of the Legends pack, FIFA 14 is the game we all expected, and the game that people will still play and still debate amongst each other as to who has the better team. Well guys there you have it. My top picks of the year so far. Granted there were plenty of other games released, but there are the ones to consider for gifts, as they will be the most popular, and most played. Have a happy and safe Christmas guys. Christmas Movie Reviews

Oh, the weather outside is frightful, but the fire is so delightful and since we’ve no place to go, let us curl up and watch some of the best Christmas movies we can find! God knows there isn’t a shortage of them!

Elf (2003) Starring Will Ferrell, ‘Elf’ is a family favourite this time of year. It’s about Buddie the Elf, a human living in the North Pole who has been raised by elves. When he finds out he’s been adopted, he travels to New York City to find his real father but has some adventures along the way! ‘Elf’ is a must see, rated PG the kids will absolutely love it (and whether they admit it or not, so will the parents!)

The Polar Express (2004) This is an animated Christmas movie that would be perfect for Christmas Eve night, before the little ones head up to bed to sleep before Santy arrives. The Polar Express is about a boy named Billy who, despite his best efforts to regain it, has lost his Christmas cheer. He longs to believe in Santa but finds it very difficult to do so. When he goes to bed on Christmas Eve, he is visited by a mysterious train, the conductor promises to take Billy and a select bunch of lucky children on a trip to the North Pole. This film excites you from the beginning and as Billy’s Christmas Spirit builds up… yours does too!

The Santa Clause (1994) Miracle on 34th Street (1994) This one is a classic! Cole’s Department store is planning their annual Thanksgiving Parade in which Santa Claus makes his first appearance on the holiday season, but the parade runs into a bit of trouble when the man hired to play Santa is found to be drunk. Enter saviour of the day, a noble, elderly man named Kris… Kris Kringle. He takes ‘drunk Santas’ place at the heart of the Parade, but little does everyone know, he is the REAL Santa Claus!! This Christmas classic will warm your heart and will really bring the Christmas spirit to any household!

This is actually a trilogy but the first film would have to be my favourite! Its about a man named Scott Calvin who becomes Father Christmas when he tries on the big red suit when the original Santa falls off his roof. He then must complete Santas job of delivering toys to every kid in the world. Scott is reluctant to accept that he is Santa until next Christmas rolls around, it is all together a very entertaining journey! Over the next few weeks you’re bound to see these festive films and many more on the telly. Keep your eyes peeled, because Christmas is a great time for good movies!

Tallaght MusicScene

The Voice of Tallaght – Kirilee Dermot By Katie Devereux I spoke to Kirilee Dermot, a Tallaght resident who appeared on the voice of Ireland. I wanted to know a bit about her journey and if she was still trying to kick start her music career. “Okay well I was born into a musical family, my auntie is Jackie Trent. She was married to Tony Hatch; they wrote and sang many great songs together back in the day, so with that influence in my life I began singing from a very young age. I was born in Essex and lived there until I was 6, then I moved to Stoke where I became more and more interested in music! Mum moved us to the other side of the country and we then ended up in Wales. It was there that I started drama and joined bands, I chased the dream and moved to London and was managed by my auntie and recorded an album, I was only 17! I was waiting and waiting for mercury records to get back to me but missed my Mum so much, so I moved back home to Wales and left the singing for a while. I went for an audition for a girl group on channel 4 and made it through to the band, we were so close to being signed but our manager became bankrupt, so that ended. Then went to the Xfactor auditions (about 7 times) and then The Voice of Ireland, by this time I had set up my own singing business, but couldn’t earn enough money to look after my two boys on my own, I found it hard and just tried to focus on The Voice, my business failed and now I’m in college training to be a child care protection officer and I still just gig for fun and that’s it. I would say I’ve done a full circle, but my singing was never really fulfilled, if only I could record and have money to record my own material now I’m older it would be amazing at 35!! I know it’s never too late, but we all have a shelf life (Laughs.)” I was interested to hear about Kirilee’s time on The Voice; “Well to start off I was amazed how I was even chosen to go through and be picked for team Bressi! But gut told me that I knew I wouldn’t get passed the battles, it’s a very busy process of filming and stuff but if I could change one thing it would be to gain more confidence. I cried before going on the stage and had to re do my make up (Laughs) it was weird experience! It gave me a small boost for as long as it lasted, but after it finished I got really down, felt very rejected, but I carried on, but it made me want to take a back seat on singing, very strange feeling to be so up and feel so down. People have asked me if I think singers with genuine talents feel discouraged because of shows like The Voice and The Xfactor and although

I understand where that thought would come from, I really think it depends on the individual. Some people thrive on rejection, it makes them work harder to try prove those people wrong, and I admire it really.” I asked Kirilee if she had any upcoming gigs that she would like to promote; “I’m taking part in a charity event in The Metro Bar and Cafe next week to help a family whose house burnt down. They lost absolutely everything so we have all got together to try raise money to support them, The event is called ‘Give Support to the Handlys’ and its on at 7:30 pm on Friday the 6th of December so I urge you all to come along and support the cause. Prove that it’s the season of giving!”

The Burning Question When do you Think Shops Should put up Their Christmas Decorations? David, 24, Bolbrook – I think it’s ridiculous that shops everywhere have their decorations up by late October; it’s like their forcing Christmas down your neck so you’ll start spending earlier and eventually end up spending more! I think the last week in November or the first week in December is a perfect time to put them up. Kelly, 32, Kingswood – I love when shops put their decorations up really early. Straight after Halloween I’m dying to get Christmas started! Let’s have Christmas all year around I say!! Shane, 19, Tallaght – I don’t really know, doesn’t make a

difference to me really because I still don’t start my Christmas shopping until the week before Christmas! (Laughs) Antoinette, 40, Kilnamanagh – I don’t think they should put any decorations up to be honest. I think it’s a bit unfair to people who don’t celebrate Christmas, whether it’s something to do with their religion or just personal choice, I think it’s a bit insensitive Keith, 25, Tallaght – I like seeing all the decorations up early. It’s like a reminder to start your shopping early to avoid getting stressed out closer to the time. There’s nothing wrong with a little Christmas spirit a bit earlier than December!

Talk to Tina Talk to Tina Tallaght Express’ very own agony aunt is here to help you. No problem too big, no problem too small, Tina is here to give you the advice you need and steer you in the right direction. Don’t worry, it’s completely confidential, just send in your problem to tinatallaghtexpress@gmail.com Dear Tina, My parents really want me to learn an instrument like piano or something but I really, really don’t want to! It’s boring and it’s not cool! I just want to have fun with my friends!! Anon, Tallaght. Hi Anon, You know, having a skill such as playing the piano can actually be quite interesting and if you were to give it a shot, you might find that you really love it, especially if you set yourself little goals for every week or every month that you’re playing. The feeling of accomplishment will spur you on to go further. Being able to play the piano is not something that everyone can say; you could have a hidden talent for it! When your older you may look back on you decision to not play and regret it. My advice to you would be, don’t knock it until you’ve tried it! Hope this helped you,Tina.

Dear Tina,

My boyfriend and I share a really great relationship. We love to spend time together, we tell each other everything, we get along with each other’s friends and we just have a great time in each other’s company! Obviously we have little disagreements from time to time the way every couple does, but we generally move past them fairly quickly. At the moment, my boyfriend has a lot of difficult stuff going on at home and I have tried to support him as best as I can. When it all first came about he was grateful for my support and things still went really well, but now he’s just changed. He’s so distant from me, he doesn’t seem as interested in the relationship as he used to and if I try to talk to him about it he just gets really annoyed. This may be selfish to say, but I don’t think this is fair on me. I understand he is going through a lot but that doesn’t mean he should take it out on me… What should I do? Helpless, Kingswood Hi, Helpless. I’m sorry to hear about the troubles your boyfriend is having and that it seems to be affecting your relationship. It’s a very tricky situation because he needs your support, but seems reluctant to accept it. In situations like these, personally I think it’s better to give him a bit of space, but still reminding him that you are there for him. Don’t hound him to talk about what’s going on, he’ll come to you when he’s ready and when you feel the time is right bring up your concerns

17

about the relationship. Be sure to do it in a non-accusing way and if you sense him getting annoyed then try to reel the conversation back a bit and figure out what it was that annoyed him. Hopefully everything will be back to normal soon. I hope this has helped, Tina. Dear Tina, I’m really annoyed because my parents go through my phone. They read all my text messages that I have sent and received and it really irritates me. I’m 15 years old and I think they need to trust me a bit more. I don’t have anything to hide but I still think I need privacy! How do I make them stop doing this? Alannah, Firhouse. Hi Alannah! I know something like that can be quite annoying, especially when you’re at an age where you crave more freedom and privacy. I can assure you that your parents only do things like this to ensure that you are safe! I advise you to sit down and have a talk with them. Tell them that you know that they only have your best interests at heart but you haven’t given them a reason not to trust you. Ask them to give you a bit more privacy in regards to what you and your friends talk about via text message but be sure you don’t make them regret it! Hope this has helped! Tina.

Christmas Tree Safety

As you deck the halls this holiday season, be fire-smart. A small fire that spreads to a Christmas tree can grow large very quickly. PICKING THE TREE-Choose a tree with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched. The branches should bend and not easily snap. PLACING THE TREE-Before placing the tree in the stand, cut 1–2” from the base of the trunk. -Make sure the tree is at least three feet away from any heat source, like fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights. A heat source too close to the tree causes one in every five of Christmas tree fires.-Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit.-Add water to the tree stand daily. LIGHTING THE TREE-Use lights that have the label of an independent testing laboratory. Some lights are only for indoor

or outdoor use.-Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Connect no more than three strands of mini string sets and a maximum of 50 bulbs for screw-in bulbs. Read manufacturer’s instructions for number of LED strands to connect. One of every three home Christmas tree fires are caused by electrical problemsNever use lit candles to decorate the tree.-Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed. AFTER CHRISTMAS-Get rid of the tree after Christmas or when it is dry.-Dried-out trees are a fire danger and should not be left in the home or garage, or placed outside against the home.-Bring outdoor electrical lights inside after the holidays to prevent hazards and make them last longer. Ps. This is just a little advice we picked up and hopefully it will help

Last Minute Checklist It’s Murphy’s Law that you are bound to forget something for the big day! It happens to the best of us, but fear not, this checklist should help you remember even the smallest details… Ummm… Unless we’ve forgotten something!! Batteries: We’re all guilty of this at one stage or another. Whether it’s that you haven’t bought enough to go around, or you simply didn’t buy any at all, batteries are DEFINITELY a must have for every household this Christmas! Maybe Santa Clause forgot to include the batteries for your little ones gifts, or maybe the batteries in the camera are a bit lower than you though, just trust us when we say… You’re going to need a lot! (Hint: We hear they’re sold quite cheap in Aldi, only €1.99 a pack!!) Christmas Dinner Veg: You would be surprised how many people forget the basics of Christmas dinner, be it the stuffing, the sprouts, the Yorkshire puddings (I’m a sucker for those yorkies!!)

or even the potatoes!! The all important Christmas dinner is a tradition that nearly every person I know looks forward to, so it MUST be perfect. Make a list at least a week before Christmas to ensure you’re not leaving yourself open to any possible Christmas day mishaps. (Remember: Popular Veg has a tendency to sell out this time of year, so be smart about when you shop!) Don’t Forget the Dessert: If you’re making the dessert from scratch, you’ll need to remember all the ingredients, allow yourself a bit more time and (if you’ve made trifle) allow time for the jelly to set! Sometimes the dessert can be over shadowed by the dinner itself, but it’s a special occasion, treat yourself and pig out! Don’t Forget to Finish the Wrapping: If you haven’t done it already, then I advise you to wrap the presents! Don’t forget to take the price tag off and label them properly too, the last thing you want is to give your sister the

socks you bought for your dad! Finish any Little Annoying Jobs that may be Left: Maybe dedicate the first half of Christmas Eve to straightening up the house! Sweeping and washing floors, taking out the special Christmas day dishes, even setting the table before you go to bed, just to ensure that anything that doesn’t need to be done tomorrow will not get in the way! Finally, Don’t Forget to Leave out Some Treats for Santy and his Reindeers: They’ve got a loooong night ahead of them, so they’re going to need something to fuel up on! Some mince pies or bikkies for Santy and a carrot for Rudolph and his friends? I think they would really enjoy that! From all of us here at Tallaght Express, have a very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year!

Christmas Recipes Traditional Eggnog (Contains Alcohol) Serves: 8 Ingredients 12 eggs, separated 6 cups milk 2 cups heavy/ thickened cream 2 cups bourbon 1+ 1/2 cups sugar 3/4 cup brandy 2 teaspoons ground nutmeg Directions • In a large bowl and using a mixer, beat the egg yolks together with the sugar for approx 10 minutes (you want the mixture to be firm and the colour of butter). • Very slowly, add in the bourbon and brandy - just a little at a time. When bourbon and brandy have been added, allow the mixture to cool in the fridge (for up to 6 hours, depending on how long before your party you’re making the eggnog).

• 30 minutes before your guests arrive, stir the milk into the chilled yolk mixture. • Stir in 1+ 1/2 teaspoons ground nutmeg. • In a separate bowl, beat the cream with a mixer on high speed until the cream forms stiff peaks. • In yet another bowl, beat the egg whites until stiff peaks

form. Gently fold the egg white mixture into the egg yolk mixture. • Gently fold the cream into the egg mixture. After ladling into cups, garnish with the remainder of the ground nutmeg. Reindeer Cookies

Ingredients Crème Filled Chocolate Cookies (Oreos) Mini Twist Pretzels Mini Marshmallows Mini Chocolate Chips Chocolate Spread Mini Smarties Instructions • Break a mini twist pretzel in half and insert the pretzel pieces into the crème filling of the chocolate cookie. • Melt the chocolate but only slightly. Lightly dip just the very bottom of two mini marshmallows into the melted chocolate and place the marshmallows on top of a cookie. • Carefully dip just the bottom of the mini chocolate chips and mini Smarties into the melted chocolate and ‘adhere’ them onto the chocolate cookie. Allow to set.

The Night before Christmas…. In Tallaght

T’was the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there. The children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of Christmas tree lights, flashed in their heads. And ma in her onesie, and I with my booze, Had just settled down for a long winter’s snooze.

When out on the lawn there arose such a bang, I sprang from me bed to see was there a gang, Away to the window I flew I was rapehh, Tore open the curtains and sparked up me packehh, The moon was shining on the new-fallen snow, It looked like the day time, I was mad confused, yeno! Well you wouldn’t believe it when I said what was here, It was only a sleigh, and eight tinny reindeer!! The oul-fella driver was, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be St Nick. More faster than mopeds his reindeer they came, He whistled and shouted and screamed out their names! “Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen! On, Comet! On, Cupid! on, on Donner and Blitzen! To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!” As dry leaves that before the wind made them fly,

When they’d find something to push off, they’d jump into the sky, So up to the roof the reindeer they flew, With the sleigh full of Toys, and St Nicholas too. And then, it was mad, I heard them on the roof, The clip and the clop of each little hoof. As I imagined it all, and thought it was weird, It got even worse when down the chimney he appeared! He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, And the dirt of him, I knew my cream rug was caput! The amount of toys he had flung on his back, I couldn’t help think how I’d clean his soot track. His eyes-they were sparkley his dimples were cute! His cheeks were like roses, his nose wrinkley like dried fruit! His tiny little mouth was pulled into a smile, And the beard of his chin he’d been growing for a while. The butt of his smoke he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke floated around his head like a wreath, He had a broad face and a little round belly, That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly! He was chubby and

plump, a right jolly old elf, And I laughed when I saw him, I couldn’t believe it meself! A wink of his eye and a nod of his head, Soon let me to know I wasn’t going to drop dead! He didn’t say anything, but got straight to work, And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk. And laying his finger on the side of his nose,

He gave another nod and up the chimney he rose. He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, when he drove out of sight, “Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!”

Do’s and Don’ts of Christmas Dinner

Time to eat our own body weight in indulgent food again and there is nothing that anybody can say about it! (Because they’re all doing the same thing!) Here are some tips to help you survive the gluttony!

DO – Dress accordingly! There’s nothing worse than spilling gravy down your new white shirt! Or wearing those super-skinny skinny jeans with a button that’s tighter than scrooge! Nobody wants to see you pop that bad boy just as much as you don’t want to do it! Think back to the thanksgiving episode of ‘Friends’ when Joey vows to eat the whole turkey … “What was I thinking?! Jeans have no give!!” DON’T – Starve yourself all day leading up to the meal that puts all others to shame! Who else has eaten so little during the day (maybe because your going to a fancy restaurant that evening) just to find that when you finally do tuck into your meal, you’re full after two bites?! No more shall you fall victim to this rookie mistake!! About 2 hours before your Christmas dinner is due to be ready, have a light snack… I’m not talking a full blown sandwich, but maybe a single slice of toast or a cuppa soup. Prepare your stomach for the feast ahead! DO – Eat slowly. This is a prime tip for those of you who really don’t like that full bloated

feeling you will inevitably get after large meals. If you eat at a slower pace, you’re giving your brain a chance to catch up with your stomach. Basically, your brain won’t know that you are full and have eaten enough food for up to 20 minutes after that has actually happened. That’s why when you eat fast and get full, the bloated feeling is really bad and lasts a while. Pace yourself, you’ll enjoy it more! DON’T – Drink too much before dinner! It is likely you will have a near empty stomach before Christmas dinner, and there’s nothing worse than drinking on an empty stomach… You’ll get drunk quicker, you’ll get sloppy, you’ll become a handful for those around you to manage and you definitely don’t want to be the one to regurgitate the food. Again, pace yourself. I’m not saying don’t drink AT ALL before dinner, some people may enjoy an Irish coffee or two, just take it easy. DO – Sincerely thanks whoever made the dinner because it’s a very tough and tiring job. And if you are the one that made the dinner, well done you! Now its time to sit back, relax and let everyone else do the cleaning up. It’s your turn to enjoy the day, so put your feet up!

Thinking of Buying a Puppy ?

The Dublin SPCA would like to make an urgent appeal to anyone who is considering purchasing a puppy/dog for Christmas and ask them to please be vigilant with regard to where this puppy/dog comes from.

Every day, we deal with people regarding animal welfare issues and it concerns us greatly when we receive calls from pet owners; especially at Christmas time, who tell us they’ve purchased their pet from the back of someone’s car or boot, only to find the animal has become dangerously ill very quickly, often dying within 24 hours of them getting it home. We’ve received a number of calls relating to such incidents in the past week. Because of this, the Dublin SPCA has issued the following guidelines. If you are looking for a puppy/dog this Christmas (or at any time of the year), please go to a shelter and adopt one. If you decide not to adopt from a shelter and opt to go to a breeder, then follow these simple guidelines: » Research dogs that interest you and find out which breed is right for you and your family/environment. » Go to an IKC registered, licensed breeder. » Insist on seeing the puppy’s parents examine and check for temperament/mental and physical condition/eye problems/other related health problems specific to your breed of choice. » Inspect the environment where the puppy was kept and never, ever agree to meet the breeder half way or in a car park; at a petrol station, on the side of the road, etc, insist on visiting the premises.

We cannot stress this point enough. » Ask about inherited conditions from the animal’s parents/grandparents. » Does the puppy come with a veterinary certificate of health? Speak to the vet. » Dogs are adults longer than they are puppies so make certain you are familiar with the adult type of your chosen breed. Remember it’s important you maintain good contact with your puppy’s breeder and understand you’re committing to this animal’s care for the rest of its life. A responsible, registered, breeder will welcome your commitment. If you’re uncomfortable or have any concerns, contact your local animal welfare shelter. The Dublin SPCA can be contacted at 01-4994700 However, if, having read our guidelines, you still wish to go ahead and purchase a puppy/dog from somebody you’ve met in a car park, petrol station, side of the road, etc., then please take the following precautions in the event your puppy suddenly becomes ill. » Get the car make, model and registration number. » Pay special attention to the person selling you the puppy; physical description, any identifying features/details, etc. For more information log onto www. dspca.ie or email me gillian.bird@dspca.ie

Opinion Piece: The Evolution of Christmas Toys By Katie Devereux

Gone are the days of asking Santa Clause for a wooden train set or a teddy bear! Now it’s all about iPads and smart phones, but what has happened to make the

youth of today to make them crave the latest technology? Why are things so different now? Technology has advanced:

Okay, so I know this is an obvious one but it’s true! I know that we are living in the digital age but that still doesn’t mean your 6 year old should have his OWN iPad

mini… The most advanced technology I can think of from when I was around that age is a Tamogatchi! (You remember them, right? The little eggshaped electronic ‘pet’) Yes, I know it’s up to the parents whether or not the child is allowed such luxuries but I myself will not even allow my son to have a mobile phone until he is out of primary school. Cultural Shift: Have you ever heard the phrase “Girls spend the first 10 years of their lives playing with Barbie’s, they spend the next 10 years trying to look like them” Well, I believe the shocking reality is that they spend a bigger part of their first 10 year than they should trying to look like Barbie dolls. It’s all down to the cultural shift and the mainstream media. We are bombarded with celebrity names and images on a daily basis! Ex Disney Channel stars turning scandalous (I think you all know who I am referring to) has a huge impact on our little ones without us even knowing it! Little girls are now dressing in the stuff that they see their favourite stars in, they’re wearing make up and dying their hair… What’s wrong with them staying kids for just a little while longer? Bring back the Disney Princesses I say!

Peer Pressure: No matter what era you lived in, I can nearly guarantee you that peer pressure prevailed! Whether it was about who had the coolest hairstyle or who consumed alcohol without their parents knowing, it has always been a problem and always will be! However, nowadays the pressure is on a totally different spectrum. Children are teased for how advanced their phone is, what games console they have, who has the latest gadgets and who has a boyfriend/ girlfriend (The last one I find particularly shocking considering the children in question are 9 and 10 years old) I find it unfortunate to say that the youth of today are ‘maturing’ at an alarming rate. They all want to grow up and be taken seriously and today’s society has a huge part to play in that! I say we talk to our kids and bring it back to basics, ask Santy for simple toys, let them stay kids as long as possible! If they’re adamant that they want the latest iPhone and insist that they are ‘mature enough’ to have it, here is a simple solution… If you’re mature enough, then save up and buy it yourself!

Santa Claus Talks to Tallaght Express By Katie Devereux The time has come yet again when Santa is watching very closely to see who is naughty and who is nice… He’s made his list and he is definitely checking it twice! I met with Santy and asked him some questions about how he has been preparing this year and how great this Christmas is really going to be! “I’ve been watching all the boys and girls very carefully this year and I am very pleased about what I have seen so far, they all need to keep up the good behaviour from now until Christmas and even afterwards… Some little boys and girls forget that I’m watching for good behaviour all year around. Loads of children have been to see me and let me know what they want this year, but there’s still a few that need to send me letters so I ask that they let me know very soon as the elves are working very hard to get all the orders filled on time. The reindeer have been training very hard to make sure they have all the energy and strength they need for the big night, but I’m sure they will need a boost on Christmas Eve night so be sure to leave a carrot out for Rudolph and all his friends!” So all the excited boys and girls are going to have a good Christmas then? “Ho, ho, ho! Of course they are, I’ve been making a list and checking it twice and there are not very many boys or girls who have been

naughty instead of nice, but there is still time for them to improve their behaviour and make their way onto my nice list! They need to remember to try their hardest in school and always say please and thank you! Manners are very important. I believe that every boy and girl can be nice.” (Laughs and shakes his belly like a bowl full of jelly) What do you think are the most popular presents that have been asked for this year? “Ooh that is difficult to say. (Santa strokes his beard) I think little boys really want race cars this year and little girls want new dollies and prams. It makes me smile when I hear that children like to play with toys that feed their imagination, because we all know how important that is.” Santa, it is your job to bring presents to all the children of the world, but has anyone ever asked what you want for Christmas? “Ho, ho, ho yes! Every year Mrs. Claus and the elves will pester me for weeks asking what would I like for Christmas and I tell them every single year that as long as every child wakes up with a smile on their face on Christmas morning, then my Christmas will be very merry indeed!” I know you’re a very busy man Santa, but is there anything else you would like to say to our readers before you get back to your preparations? “Ah, yes! A very merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!” (Santa jumps back in his sleigh and swishes off to the North Pole)
