Local student wins Jailbreak

Templeogue student Salim Sebaoui along with Kyryll Chulak, from Kilkenny won Jailbreak 2014 which took place ast weekend.
The jailbreak challenge teams have so far raised over €33,000 for St Vincent de Paul & Amnesty International. This was the second year of the jailbreak Challenge in Ireland. The students who took part were from Trinity College, University College Dublin, University College Cork and National University of Ireland Galway.
They got the furthest away from Ireland in 36 hours without spending their own money or borrowing from family or friends. Salim and Kyryll from Trinity College Dublin reached Sydney, Australia within 36 hours having left Dublin at 9am on Saturday morning (22nd). They are pictured here in KIlmainham Gaol before setting off.
The combined total of miles travelled by the teams was over 186 thousand miles. As well as Sydney other teams reached Singapore, San Diego and Abu Dhabi.

Call for increased rate grants Independent candidate Dermot Richardson has called on south Dublin county council to increase the grant for business paying over €10,000 per year in rates This grant should be for all business in the county not just for the ones in the bracket of 10k per year all businesses are struggling in the current climate and employers are trying to keep staff in employment . The reductions start from €75 euro up to the highest €670 depending on rates band business are on. Also business have been paying water rates for a number of years along with rates. This does not go far enough to support all business in the community.

March deadline for consultation on internet safety Consultation on Children’s Welfare highlighted on Safer Internet Day Minister for Communications, Pat Rabbitte T.D. has urged members of the public to engage with the public consultation on internet governance before the deadline of 18 March saying: “Safer Internet Day is an ideal opportunity to highlight the work we are doing to examine the regulation of the internet. It is so important that people affected by issues such as cyber bullying, can make their voice heard during consultations like this. In particular, I feel it is important that young people contribute to developing policy in this area. They are living through a radical transformation in the way we interact socially and can provide us with invaluable insights into the real impact of this change on their lives. .” The Minister reiterated his call for all interested parties and particularly parents and young people to engage with the Group in the development of their report. The consultation will run until 18 March and comments received will be considered by the Group in their preparation of a report to the Minister in the summer.

He would seek
to fly “above these nets”. Unique among his contemporaries he laid claim for the artist’s freedom from such temporal concerns to “forge the uncreated conscience of his race”. Thus began his life long task of sketching the universal human condition he had observed around him in Dublin in the real lives of ordinary people. In the course of A Portrait which covered the first decades of his life, we see him creating his own individual aesthetic, as opposed to the dictates of the Church. He is already aware of the beginnings of new European writers such as Ibsen, and leaves Ireland to live mostly in poverty, but at liberty to seek

nourishment from other cultures. The novel eventually published in 1916, contains some of the most dramatic scenes in modern literature. 'imaginative and graceful...Jimmy Fay's direction of this in-house production at the New Theatre in Dublin plays a great part in the success with its quirky and highly visual approach.' Tallaght Schools invited to take part in ISPCC “Apprentice Youth Award” The ISPCC are inviting secondary schools in Tallaght to take part in their Shield Youth Award. Transition Year students will take part in an “Apprentice Style” competition with the top three school in the country invited to present their project in a boardroom at the heart of Dublin’s financial district to Celebrity Apprentice judge Caroline Downey and two other celebrity judges. The project brief is to plan and execute a fundraising event, product or campaign to support both their school and the ISPCC Shield Anti-Bullying Campaign. Students will be marked on their creativity, marketing and innovation skills. The winning team will be expected to effectively communicate the anti-bullying message and raise awareness of the devastating effect of bullying on children. The winners will receive a specially commissioned crystal Shield Award for their school and will be featured in national print, TV and social media press releases. Professor Layton and the Azran The Wolf of Wall Street Legacy By Katie Devereux
Never before have I been more entertained by a film in all my life, especially one that runs for the best part of 3 hours! ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ starring Leonardo Dicaprio is the tale of Jordan Belfort, an honest, innocent stock broker who is soon corrupted by the greed that money brings. “The way I saw it, their money was better off in my pocket – I knew how to spend it better”
Taken From ign.com Azran Legacy sticks to that tried-and-tested template. There’s an overarching mystery to solve, with several secrets to uncover along the way. Your investigations are regularly interrupted by various crackpots and misfits asking you to solve puzzles, which earn you picarats (currency) for correct answers. Get them wrong, and your picarat tally will be reduced, though this time there are more puzzles that allow you to adjust your answer before committing to a solution. Outside the story, there are episodes that fill in background details on minor characters and incidents, while Layton’s capacious trunk holds three mini-games. In that regard, little has changed. The puzzles themselves are more skillfully woven into the narrative than before, even if the connections at times can be tenuous and, at times, faintly ridiculous. Action scenes are twisted into environmental conundrums, as Layton dodges swinging hooks to reach enemy agents, while one flight is interrupted by a swarm of drones, the professor shooting down odd-numbered or uniquely-shaped ones to shake off the rest. It’s essentially the most sedate turret sequence in video game history. Those riddles that don’t quite fit into the plot are tied into events detailed in newspaper stories accessed from the trunk, encouraging you to pay repeat visits to locations you’ve already mined for puzzles, hint coins and collectable knick-knacks. Meanwhile, two of the three new asides are well worth taking time out for. Nut Roller sees a squirrel pushing a walnut around a 3D grid, rolling boulders and acorns to guide it to the goal tent, in a surprisingly tricky set of challenges. Blooms and Shrooms asks you to reinvigorate withered gardens by positioning flowers with powerful cross-pollination abilities, sparking chain reactions to cover the grids in greenery, without disturbing spore-spitting fungi in the process. Dress Up is the only letdown, a tedious and simplistic aside that tasks you with selecting outfits for various NPCs based on their requests. Any Layton game lives or dies on the quality of its puzzles and its plot, and thankfully both are well up to scratch. As the last episode of a prequel story, we obviously know the fate of most characters, which invariably means it can’t possibly have the emotive wallop of Lost Future’s finale. Yet the knowledge that this is the last adventure for the professor still makes for an oddly touching climax, and its final act certainly isn’t without its surprises (or, indeed, fan-pleasing cameos). And while a few puzzle ideas repeat themselves - though most are given a fresh contextual twist - this is the first even-numbered Layton whose riddles match up to the first and third games;
indeed, it’s arguably the finest outing since the original trilogy. Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy brings a great series to a close in fine style. It doesn’t take many risks with the established formula, but its story is engaging, intelligently written and compelling to the end.
It’s safe to say that this film is not one for those of you who are easily offended! The film runs rife with swearing, sex, drugs, some more swearing and just about as much nudity as one person can handle. It tells the story of an honest working man, which inevitably turns into a tale of his demise. A must watch Immage from: in our books!

PictureHouse celebrate after latest single playlisted by BBC Radio 2 Local band PictureHouse are celebrating their new single Rules of Science being playlisted on BBC Radio 2. Taken from the evolution album, the single version of the song is produced by Adam Kviman (Jewel, Eagle Eye Cherry) in Sweden and Mixed by Pete Glenister (Alison Moyet, Annie Lennox, Bryan Ferry and Tiny Tempah) in London. Front man Dave Browne said that this is a song which has at it’s heart “the message of hope against despair “I will find you” no matter what the circumstances, even rules of science will be broken”, Rules of Science was co-written by Browne with Lasse Anderson who music purists will know as the son of Abba’s Stig Anderson but also has a rich musical background himself having written Emilia’s Big Big World in 1998 amongst other europop hits. Dave spoke to Tallaght Express back in October and said “…we have a UK release of our album in February” Little did he know it would be such a success! Best known for the hit singles “Sunburst”, “Heavenly Day”, “Everybody Loves My Girl”, “Somebody Somewhere”, the band toured extensively with the likes of The Corrs, The Saw Doctors, Bon Jovi, Meatloaf, Marillion, Mel C and many more earning them legions of fans including Elton John who bought 50 copies of the band’s Karmarama album for his friends and family after seeing them at a festival in London. Evolution has had its own Irish release already, achieving great acclaim and full houses around the country. Interview with Mark from Bipolar Empire By Katie Devereux Bipolar Empire are Tallaghts up and coming music group. In recent times they have become very popular so I felt it necessary to do an interview to try get to know the band a bit better. I interviewed their guitarist, Mark – Here’s what he had to say;
hearing a packed out crowd at Oxegen singing our song back to us … Another is when a dog ran onstage during a festival and bit Joe (our bass player)s leg and wouldn’t let go for 3 songs! 7. Is there any advice you would give to anyone hoping to start a career in music? Someone that would be in the same place as you were at the beginning? My advice would be to be to make sure you enjoy whatever music your doing and try not to make it like work. Also if it’s original music you are interested in try to stick at it as long as possible.
1. Tell me a bit about yourself and how the band was formed ? Well im Mark and I’m from Tallaght, as are the rest of the band. The band was more or less formed at Oxegen festival a few years back, then we went to a mental asylum and rescued Cal, our drummer. (Laughs) 2. Tell me about the music you used to listen to when you were younger that inspired you ? I think the earliest music I ever listened to was Michael Jackson when I bought the ‘bad’ lp in Windsor market when I was a kid. Then I started to get into The Beatles and The Beach Boys and lots of other stuff. 3. What is your earliest memory of being interested in music/performing? My earliest memory is playing a block of LEGO like a guitar... (Money was tight in those days) when I was about 13 I picked up the guitar and decided I wanted to get up and play it onstage. 4. How would you describe your style/ genre? Do you play a lot of cover songs or is it mostly originals? Bipolar Empire’s style is harmonic rock music with a kind of poppyish feel. We play mostly original stuff but on rare occasions at certain gigs we might through in a cover eg Jackie Wilson-Higher and Higher which we recorded before for charity. 5. What would you say is your biggest achievement in regards to your performing so far? Our biggest achievement so far has been getting to play in places I never thought I would, for example, Brazil and Russia. Future hopes are to be successful in so far as making music my career and obviously sell out stadiums across the world! 6. What’s your favourite memory of performing? My favourite memory of performing is

In the play, Michael battles to cope with the stresses of redundancy and a new role as a stay-at-home husband. Faith follows his story after he meets charismatic friend, Chris [Michael Glenn Murphy] who offers him some new hope in friendship and a new job. However, as this male bonding develops into impromptu games of football and discussions on the meaning of life, back at home there’s still a mortgage to be paid and a family to be looked after. Michael’s new-found optimism and low-paid employment don’t wash well at home with wife Maeve [Jennifer O’Dea]. He soon finds himself with a serious dilem-
ma. The scene is set for confrontation between Michael’s domestic responsibilities and the survival of his sense of self, particularly his sanity. With a stellar Irish cast supporting Wycherley, who’s other roles include Raymond in Bachelors Walk and Fr. If something like this has happened very quickly then I would think that something in his life or the relationship has changed suddenly. I know that you have said you have talked to him, but maybe it will be easier to talk after you have identified the problem directly. Be sure to not sound accusing while talking to him because this can cause some upset and put a strain on communications. Talk to him in a calm environment and progress slowly through the conversation because if you bombard him with questions then you may force up his barriers. Fitzgerald backs local Tidy Towns Groups to have a “clean, green 2014” Local TD Frances Fitzgerald, Minister for Children & Youth Affairs, has welcomed the recent meeting hosted by South Dublin Council to provide ideas for Tidy Towns, saying “this gives local groups the tools to have their best year yet in 2014”. Minister Fitzgerald added: “The work carried out by Tidy Towns groups is so vital, not only in terms of beautifying our neighbourhoods - it actually improves the quality of life of local residents. “I will support these wonderful groups in any way I can. To that end, I have written to the Council asking them to give a detailed breakdown of all possible grants and funds available to Tidy Towns groups in 2014, and when these will be available. Investing in Tidy Towns is a no-brainer – every euro invested is returned with interest through the hard work done by volunteers. “As Minister for Children & Youth Affairs, I wish to extend congratulations to all the young people getting involved in Tidy Towns, in particular Shane Byrne and his colleagues at North Clondalkin Tidy Towns who are doing such great work. DO’s and DON’Ts of Sticking to Your New Diet!
We
all know the feeling of giving up on our diets at some point in our lives; it can make you feel very defeated! Hopefully these tips help you stick it out a bit longer and help you achieve your desired results!
DO
– Research! Find out everything you can about the diet plan you’ve chosen to work with and see if it is genuinely suited to you. Everyone is different and there is no point choosing a vegetarian diet when you tuck into a rib eye steak once a week!
DON’T
– Expect fast results. Such a big change WILL take time, you need patience in order to finally see some results but don’t get discouraged by the fact that you cant see your six pack in the mirror after just completing your set of crunches.
DO
– Set yourself small goals every few weeks to keep yourself motivated. When you start reaching the small ones and you are aware of what your body is capable of then step it up a notch
and set higher goals. Always stick to within your confines, you need to learn to walk before you can run!
DON’T
– Forbid yourself from eating your favourite foods! Everyone deserves a treat every now and again, especially after working really hard, just don’t pig out! Everything in moderation. Also, don’t think of it as a diet, it’s a lifestyle change, one that will benefit you to no end as long as you doing it healthily and avoiding all the celebrity endorsed fad diets, lets face a cold reality here – they don’t work!
DO
– Speak to your doctor before deciding on any diet or exercise regime. They will be able to advise you how to approach the matter safely so you don’t injure or harm yourself in anyway – physically, mentally and health wise too! 400g pork mince 1 small onion, grated 4 garlic cloves, crushed zest ½ lemon 50g grated parmesan 1 tbsp olive oil 400g spaghetti 150ml double cream 200g fresh or frozen peas, defrosted
1. Mix the mince, onion, garlic and zest with half the Parmesan and some seasoning, then shape into 16 walnutsized meatballs. Heat the oil in a nonstick pan and fry the meatballs for 10-12 mins until golden. 2. Meanwhile, cook the pasta following pack instructions, drain and reserve 150ml of the cooking liquid. Add the
cream and 100ml pasta water to the meatballs, scraping the bottom of the pan to get all the sticky bits off. Bubble until thick and the meatballs are cooked through. 3. Add the peas, cook for a further 2 mins, then add the parsley. Stir through the pasta with a splash more pasta water to make the whole thing saucy. Sprinkle over the remaining Parmesan and serve

Ingredients 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour, divided 1/2 cup powdered sugar 1 cup butter or 1 cup margarine, softened 4 large eggs 2 cups sugar 1/3 cup lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon baking powder powdered sugar Method 1. Combine 2 cups flour and 1/2 cup powdered sugar. 2. Cut butter into flour mixture with a pastry blender until crumbly. 3. Firmly press mixture into a lightly greased 13x9 inch pan. 4. Bake at 350° for 20-25 minutes or until lightly browned. 5. Whisk eggs in a large bowl; whisk in 2 cups sugar and lemon juice. 6. Combine remaining 1/4 cup flour and baking powder; whisk into egg mixture; pour batter over crust. 7. Bake at 350° for 25 minutes or until set. 8. Let cool completely in pan on a wire rack. 9. Cut into bars, and sprinkle evenly with additional powdered sugar.

Tackling Cancer: Valiant Merryn (4) meets the Irish Team in Ireland for cases of relapse being very limited; parents are faced with the huge costs of seeking treatment further afield in Europe or the USA.

This week four year old Merryn Lacy went to watch the Irish Rugby team train and made it her mission to grace the players with her adorable presence later on that day.
Getting support from some of Ireland’s best known actors and sportspeople including; Colin Farrell, Peter Coogan and Katie Taylor: Merryn Lacy is continuing to work her way through these difficulties and donated prizes such as Katie Taylor’s World Championship shorts and vest will be up for auction to help raise funds for Merryn.
The team had a lot of time for Merryn and asked “how she was doing”. There is no doubt this little lady was cheering on our boys in green on Saturday afternoon when Ireland played against England.
“We have some auction items; we managed to get a good bit of stuff off Katie as she is Merryn’s patron.”
Merryn, who has stage 4 Neuroblastoma Cancer, is currently undergoing frontline treatment in Crumlin. Merryn finished her 12th round of Chemotherapy on the 16th of February.
“U2 gave us a signed limited edition vinyl signed by Bono with a letter of authenticity. We got a signed guitar off Danny from The Script also!” said Stephen Guerin, who is a close friend to the Lacy family.
Her family aim to send her to the USA for further treatment which alone will cost €100k. There is a 70% chance of relapse also and this treatment can cost up to 500k! Neuroblastoma has a high possibility of relapse and with treatment options

Shamrock Rovers First Division Team Shamrock Rovers Football Club held a press conference on the 11th of February 2014 to formally announce their first division squad and management. Colin Hawkins is the manager of the Shamrock Rovers First Division team, assisted by Noel White. The club has currently signed nine players specifically for the First Division team. These will be joined by members of the current Shamrock Rovers Under 19 team. The nine players are: Daniel Purdy (former Longford); Liam Traynor, Adam Whelan and Mick Kelly (all former UCD); Chris Lyons (former Bohemians); Conor O’Malley (former Mervue); Ryan Coombes and Kevin Knight (both former Bray) and Corie Treacy from junior football. I spoke to Luke Clerkin about Teen-Line, a helpline for teenagers who are struggling to cope with some issues they may be having. Here’s what he had too say;
When was Teen line founded? It was founded in the mid 2000’s after Maureen Bolger lost her son. She wanted to give an outlet to young people who were feeling the same as he may have been feeling. She realised there was no helpline for teenagers, just for children and adults but not for inbetweeners, as she calls them. How did the Never Alone Busking come about, I know it was the anniversary recently. Well, Gavin Doyle and myself recorded a song for TeenLine and decided to go busking so we could pay the sound engineer, Cian Donohoe from Block C. We didn’t want to see him do it for free, even though he offered to. So we went out to temple bar, just 4 of us and we met with others who I kind of pulled off the street as they were walking by and then it just evolved really. Was the Busking a one time thing or has it been done a few more times? No, it was something we did a lot over the past year, raising over 5000 euro from the busking alone. We formed a collective with six or so musicians which quickly turned into 60. We built up a following and on the anniversary, they all returned to support us and most of them were teenagers. We gained help from some really talented up and coming musicians like Hidden Plans from Ballyfermot, Second Harmony from Crumlin and Bagels from Dundrum, to just name a few and having teenagers like them represent Teen-Line was amazing! They set a huge example for other teens! Tell me about louder voices?

Well, Louder Voices was set up by Patrick Ward and myself as a college project. We have to run an event and we decided to do it for Teen-Line, the aim of Louder Voices itself, is to give a louder voice to those who need it. As Teen-Line already holds a place in my heart and since Patrick is still a Teenager, it just felt right. I aim to help out other charities and musicians as well because there are a lot of musicians who need to be given the platform to perform! But for now we’re running an event in The Unitarian Church on the 1st of March, it’s called ‘Louder Voices for Teen-Line Ireland. It’s an all ages gig with some amazing acts playing like Mongoose, 48:Hours, Second Harmony, Find Home and more. Doors open 5.30 pm! Facebook.com/LouderVoicesIreland Do you think there should be more organisations like Teen line available? There are plenty more to be honest, it’s just there’s not enough awareness raised. Awareness means PR and PR means money, so I just think once funds are raised for charities; you’ll hear a lot more about them. Also volunteers play a huge part, so if you want to hear more about these organisations go out and do something and help them become known and by doing that, you’re saving lives!! Why do you think there is still a huge stigma attached to mental health disorders and how do you think people can over come this? To be honest I don’t think there is as much of a stigma as there was around 3 years ago, people have began talking a lot more about because of people like us and the celebrities like Bressie who have spoken out about their own illnesses. Slowly but surely there will be no stigma, it’s going to take a huge team effort but it can be done! All the charities out there that fight to get rid of it, should work together instead of separately because they all want the same thing and there’s power in numbers!
Are there any future fund raising plans you’d like to share with us? I only have Louder Voices at the moment and then I plan to take a step back for a few months to refresh but I’ll be back with some even bigger ideas and a bigger drive to fulfil my goals for Teen-Line and mental health!
