Do’s and Don’ts of

New Years Eve

New Years Eve is the party season’s way of going out with a bang! … We just want to make sure you don’t go with it! That’s right Tallaght; it’s time for another addition of ‘Do’s and Don’ts’ DO – Get plenty of rest during the day! You don’t want to be falling asleep before the countdown even starts! DON’T – Mix drinks! This often has catastrophic results!! Ever hear the phrase, never mix the grain and the grape… Unless you want the mother of all hangovers the next day!! DO – Head out early to make sure you actually get in to whatever club/pub you’re going to… but pace yourself once you get there… You don’t want to be ringing in the New Year with your head in the toilet. DON’T – Stress about the night! Worrying about here you’re going, who you’re going with and what you’re going to wear is pointless… Just go with the flow! Remember, how you start the year is how you spend the year! DO – after considering all these factors, ring in the New Year in style! After all, it’s going to be another 365 more days before you get the opportunity to again!

Tallaght Restorative Practice Trainers Awarded Certs The Mayor of South Dublin got into festive spirit when he attended the Childhood Development Initiative Christmas Seminar to award Certs to 12 new Restorative Practice Trainers. Mayor Dermot Looney commended the successful trainers – all of whom live or work in Tallaght - for their leadership in the community. “I am delighted to present certificates to these people who have achieved accreditation as Restorative Practice trainers. Each person has demonstrated incredible energy, creativity and an ability to motivate others to take on this way of working.” Restorative Practice (RP) is an approach to resolving conflict and difficulties in a community through dialogue and engagement between the community, the offender and the victim. During the coming year, CDI aims to provide support to 500 parents, staff and young people to help embed Restorative Practice in Tallaght. CDI Chief Executive Marian Quinn added her congratulations to those who received certs and revealed CDI’s own New Year’s plan to become a restorative organisation in 2014. “We are in discussion with the Board of CDI to work towards becoming a restorative organisation ourselves in 2014, meaning that we will uphold the principles of RP not only in how we work as a team, but also in how we engage with the wider community.”CDI has recently established an all Ireland Restorative Practice Strategic Forum, which draws together expertise and experience across both the Republic and Northern Ireland, in order to find ways to further develop

and promote the approach. The Forum has launched a Restorative Practice dedicated website at www.restorativepractices.ie. Last September CDI announced details of a new phase of funding it secured to continue to deliver its work in Tallaght West until 2016. The €4 million was secured from the Department of Children and Youth Affairs and the Atlantic Philanthropies. Over the next year, CDI plans to deliver the following: · 500 families to receive Early Years parent support; · 240 children to participate in the Doodle Den literacy programme; · 150 children to receive Speech and Language Therapy Intervention; · 500 parents, staff and young people to be provided support in embedding Restorative Practice in the community; · A new programme or model to be delivered specifically for 0-3 years olds; · A Doodle Den follow up programme to be developed; · IT based supports for children’s literacy and parenting to be developed.

Epic Fitness Tallaght Here to Help with your New Year’s Resolutions! By Katie Devereux Well considering that the New Year is upon us, I felt it was necessary to speak to a trainer. I spoke to John from ‘Epic Fitness Tallaght’ to see what he had to offer and how it all began, here’s what he had to say; 1.Tell me a bit about how Epic Fitness started. Id worked for Irish biscuits for 12 years and I was made redundant in 2009, so I had a big decision to make about what was next for my future, I always had an interest in fitness and coaching. I’d always played sports, mainly soccer with local club sacred heart FC, I had been coaching a schoolboy football team there, so I decided take a year out and go to college and train as a gym instructor, while I was in college I started up a ladies boot camp, started off with about around 10 girls, girlfriend, family, friends etc., that was. Twice a week up in the KCS sports hall/studio, in the mean time I finished off my qualifications and have gone on to become a personal trainer, also certified in TRX and rip:60 suspension training, kettle bells, spin. I now have 3 boot camp classes a week and 6 Rip:60 suspension training classes a week, for both men and woman. 2. Do you have a target audience? I’d cater for men and women of all fitness levels, aged 16 + , looking for anything from weight loss to muscle gain to general all around fitness and well been. 3.Tell me about some of the benefits to the classes you offer.

There are so many benefits to what we do, from people looking and feeling better about themselves to just having better all around health and well being, there is also the elements of meeting new people, getting out with your friends, ( physical, mental and social benefits) from the classes and PT sessions. We also try to educate people about there bodies, how to train, recovery and eat healthy. There are a great groups of girls and lads that come to the classes who work so hard, all this in a fun and friendly environment. 4. Do you have anything exciting planned for the new year in regards to special offers as a lot of people generally plan to lose weight in the new year? I’ll have great offers on 6 week body transformation program’s and 30 day fitness challenges. Where people will be pushed and helped along with there fitness goals.

The Perfect Christmas Voucher GET 25% EXTRA

5. Do you have any hopes or plans for the future? My hopes and plans for the New Year is to try expand the personal training side of things and keep the classes going strong. I also have a small personal training studio down in the Killanarden enterprise park; I’m hoping to move to a bigger unit in the enterprise park, bigger and better personal training studio in the New Year.

Assassins Creed Black Flag Review

The Hobbit:

By Kevin Doyle

Taken from entertainment.ie

For me, Assassins Creed have always been games to put other games on the shelf. They always had an indescribable hook, which made the games nearly impossible to put down. Assassins Creed Black Flag is quite different. As you battle your way through rum soaked sailors, for pillaging and booty to be had, it’s hard to see why you would even be pushed to play the main story line. This game, strays away from the usual “stealth-mode engaged” scenario to a more “come at me!” style of play. This game is centred around the character Edward Kenway, a pirate, who gets dragged into the ever lasting battle between the Templars, and Assassins. Though having said that, the battles between the Knights of Templar and Assassins, are few and far between in this game. Instead, you spend most of the time sailing the ocean, sinking whatever, and whoever you like. Yes it sounds like fun, but after sinking 20 or thirty Spanish Galleons, it gets a bit tedious. The main aim of sinking or capturing the ships is to modify and adapt your ship, making it faster or tougher, or to capture the ship and sell it in the port. The game itself has a huge expansive feel about it, almost giving it a feeling of an open world game. An almost never ending series of side missions and stories for the player to complete, this is a rare gem for those gamers who enjoy the side stories, and the tracks that lead away from the main story line from new underwater areas to assassination missions, Templar keys, Mayan keys, treasure maps, treasure chest, sea shanty music sheets. The main story itself, is basically every pirate story. One

in which you defend your pirate life, and take what you like. The combat in Assassin Creed games has always been a draw to fans of melee/hand to hand combat. Stealth kills, and Parkour-esque style kills were a breath of fresh air in comparison to the games which were flooding the market, like Devil May Cry. The combat style in this however, seems to be outdated and stale, using the same methods they always have, and in comparison to games like Batman Arkham Asylum, poor old Edward, is an 800 year old pirate, fighting a Shao Lin Monk. It feels heavy and clunky almost, and if instead of moving 10 paces in one swift move, you’re dragging your feet, and button bashing. This game isn’t an Assassins Creed game. It’s a pirate simulator, with a giant AC on the front. Littered with historical inaccuracies, bad plot holes, and a cast with the strangest accents in a video gameit somehow manages to be fun. This game would have been better off ditching the main plot, giving the player a pirate ship and told “go nuts. Let’s see how much havoc you can cause...on a ship...full of guys...” Anyway, this game, although serious, is probably the most fun AC game to date. The heart breaking “blending in” is gone, and replaced by “let’s go hunk sharks just because we can!” This game shouldn’t have been a stand alone title. It feels more like a DLC or a bonus pack to ACIII, with a plot line thrown in. Ubisoft, the game developers, built Black Flag on two assumptions. That you can build a game based on the titles previous success, and that pirates are awesome-and based on how I feel about the game, pirates. Are. Freaking. AWESOME.

The Worlds Weirdest Inventions When you hear the word ‘inventions’ you may be like me and automatically think of the most hair-brained ideas your mind will allow. Usually, that isn’t what people mean when talking about inventions, unless you’re talking about these ones; 1. Hands Free Umbrella – ThisIsWhyImBroke.com $59.99 I suppose this could come in handy! It essentially looks like the hood of a buggy, but its waterproof and see through. It simply attached to your shoulders and voila! Hands free weather protection! Ideal for cyclists on those really nasty days that you just can’t avoid. 2. Brownie Slice Pan - http://www.awesomeinventions.com/ £16.99 Thank god something like this has finally been made!! How irritating is it when you slave away in the kitchen, cooking brownies for that special someone, they turn out perfectly… Then you have to get them out of the tin… You’re slicing to the best of your ability and they’re still uneven sizes, no worries, at least they haven’t turned to crumbs… oh wait, that doesn’t happen until you try to take them out of the pan!!! With this handy little gadget, you never have to worry about that again! 3. The Butter Stick – Origin/Price Unknown Think of a glue stick, but it’s not glue, it’s butter!! I actually think this is a really good idea…. As long as you keep it FAR away from any glue sticks… Imagine spreading THAT on your toast! 4. Self-Twirling Spaghetti Fork – bimbambanana.com $27 *Face plam* how lazy has this world gotten?! Seriously people, its not that difficult to twirl a fork but we still have an electric one?! What is going on with the world?! 5. Extendable Arm for ‘Selfies’!!! – amazon.com $18.99 This is where I loose all hope for humanity! Why would someone invent this?!?! The horror!! I don’t want to live in this world anymore…

The Desolation of Smaug Let’s get the expected grumblings out of the way first: imposing a nine hour adaptation on The Hobbit is daft and...Smaug finds itself stretched. Yes. Fine - we know that going in. But what’s it like being dipped into this wonderfully realised universe for nearly three hours one more time? While surprise might be absent now Middle Earth is still an entertaining place to be. Bilbo (Freeman) and the band of dwarves, headed up by Thorin (Armitage), looking to reclaim his place as king, make their way for the Lonely Mountain. Meanwhile Gandalf (McKellen) travels to Dor Guldor to seek out the identity of the Necromancer... With Lord of the Rings part of pop culture now Jackson has resorted to the artificial upping of stakes in the chase of invention - first there were Orcs, then mean Orcs, now there are REALLY mean Orcs - and the shoehorning in of an unlikely love triangle between elves Bloom (Legolas is now an invincible superhero), Evangeline Lilly and dwarf Aidan Turner feels forced. The Laketown sequence goes on forever without anything happening and fails to give Stephen Fry a decent line to warrant the actor’s appearance. And despite various mentions of the titular dragon it’s easy to forget what the band are up to and why - that’s just criminal.

It can have the air of a copy, like it was someone trying to do a Peter Jackson while adapting a novel by someone trying to do a Tolkien. More often than not you wish Aragorn and co. would turn up to start a massive battle or something. To his credit Jackson is aware of this and works hard to tie this in with Lord of the Rings with Mirkwood and Moria making an appearance and there is a passing mention of ‘one of the nine’. The director comes up trumps with some snazzy action sequences: the river rapids are fun, the spiders are creepy, and the teasing revelation of Smaug (sleazily voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch) and his lair is very impressive. When it comes to the middle movie of a Middle Earth franchise... Smaug is no Two Towers but it’s hard to resist this world and when the story kicks into gear, which it does from time to time, it offers up some genuine excitement.

The Stoney Brokes 1. Tell me how exactly the Stoney Brokes were born. Were you all friends for long before hand? The band formed in 2008, Dan Mckenna (lead guitar) and Ollie Jordan Kelly (drums) met in Tallaght Community School and start jamming, not taking it too seriously at the beginning. As time went on they got more and more into their instruments and Dan got more serious about his song writing. Then along came Lola, she was also friends with the lads in school and outside of school they just became closer as friends and jammed for fun. Lola then moved to Greenhills School where she met Amy Kelly (main vocals) the band were going around four months before Amy joined. They then met a guy called Chris (bass) after a while they fell out with Chris. Gar Whelan then stood in on bass for 2 months. In December 2009 I start managing them. It was just a wee project I was doing for college. Gar then left so I start playing bass for them by the end of December 2009. So it was really all through mutual friends in Tallaght community school and bumping into each other at gigs in Captain Americas. Lola Lynch then left the band in August 2012 to move to Australia and in came Ciaran Redmond, another mutual friend we knew from the gigging circuit. 2. How would you describe your style/genre? Their appeal is energetic, sweaty garage rock, fused with pop, swing and the occasional adagio. Amy Kelly’s powerful voice and charismatic stage presence demands attention, while guitarists Dan and Ciarán cleverly switch lead and rhythm, providing backing vocals also. Dave Penny’s rumbling bass along with Ollie’s almighty drumming and erratic performances sustain the band’s punch and precise delivery on stage and on record. 3. Is there a main song writer in the group or do you all contribute? Dan Mckenna is most certainly the song writer, the core and foundation of the songs. He spends most of his time writing music, melodies, riffs and is very passionate about the whole process. He then brings that foundation of a song to rehearsals and we all add our own touch to it. We work so well together and know each other musically, so what we all individually come up with usually works well together. 4. How has it been recording the album? I’d imagine it’s really exciting! Recording the album has been an amazing experience. We have been working hard on it now for over two years. We are now in the final step of the production. It is currently been mastered by Ivan Jackman who we will be working

with for our second album. We wanted the first album to be perfect. It has a bit of everything on it. It’s got a varied genre range. A bit of pop, a bit of indie, a bit of slow rock, swing up beat and energetic. It has been a long journey and it has been hard work. Patients, persistence and belief are key in this business. The album will be released early next year and will be available in all major online social network sites, online music outlets and hopefully music stores around Dublin. 5. You’s played at Electric Picnic, that must have been so exciting! How were yous approached to play? Playing Electric Picnic is definitely up there in as the most exciting experience in the bands history. It is the most prestigious music event in Ireland and playing at it was an honour. The line up was also incredible so getting to see the biggest names in music was just a bonus. The Arctic Monkeys set and Bjork were incredible!! We were asked to play by Lisa Mclaughlin who runs The Saucey Sundays event in Grand Social every Sunday. She was running the Oxjam tent at picnic and

she really enjoys our live performances so she wanted us on the bill. Lisa’s a fantastic musician herself so she’s got a good ear for live music! 6. What are your hopes for the future? Hopes would to be playing music for a living. As a band, touring, playing in cities all over Europe and perhaps the world. Our music been heard on the Radio, television, playing stadiums. As a kid I would watch The Beatles anthology and watching them play in sell out arenas and having girls chase them and scream till they pass out, ha that would be

The Burning Question What Would be your Ideal Job and Why? Shannon, 20, Tallaght – I’d love to be a model. It all just looks so glamorous and fun. I’d love if people could know my name all over the world and I’d love to travel and meet new people! That would be my dream job! John, 40, Jobstown – What would my dream job be? Hmmm probably being a professional lotto winner (Laughs) Then I’d have it made for the rest of my life! Claire, 37, Jobstown – I think I’d love to be a midwife! Imagine being the person to introduce a mother to her new baby, I think that would be an

amazing feeling. Stewart, 33, Tallaght – I don’t know why, but I’ve always wanted to be a big professional in a suit that works in an office. I don’t know what’s so appealing about that, just seems like fun, being able to make all the decisions. I don’t have a specific job I would like, but that’s the description. Rory, 22, Kingswood – A professional footballer. Seems like it would be great craic, always training or playing football with the lads, and you always be minted too! I think that would be savage, I’ll be the next Neymar!

nice! 7. What has been your favourite experience as a band to date? There have been a few top moments. Our EP launch is probably up there. We sold out The Grand Social venue and packed the place out. Playing in front of so many people, entertaining such a large crowd is very exhilarating. I think this album launch will be very big....it could be the next highlight and big step in The Stoney Brokes career

Hi Tina, I’m the youngest of 5 children in my family. I’m almost 15 years old. I’m too young to have a job but I get pocket money from my parents and I don’t have Christmas presents for anybody in my family. I’m really panicking and I feel really selfish! What should I do? Scrooge, Kilnamanagh Hi Scrooge, I’m the youngest in quite a big family too, and seeing as this is the case, my family STILL don’t expect presents off me. I’m sure yours don’t expect any either. If you’re really, really stressing about this, you could either talk to them all individually OR you could make them some presents. The amount of thought and effort gone into a hand made Christmas present can be really meaningful so why not give it a shot? You could make some coupon books, or sugar body scrubs. You could even decorate a picture frame or write a little poem. Whatever it is, your family will appreciate it because it came from you! (But I can guarantee that they

aren’t expecting anything!) Hope this has helped, Tina. Hi Tina, I’m 19 and my parents still don’t want me to go out drinking for New Years Eve! How is this fair?! Absolutely ALL my friends are going and I’m well over the legal drinking age so what’s the big deal?! It would be my first New Years night out and I really don’t want to miss it, how can I get them to relax a bit and just let me go?! Annoyed, Tallaght Hi annoyed, Please don’t be too annoyed, I’m sure they have very good reason to be feeling like this. The fact that you mentioned it would be your first time going out on new years tells me that they could be a bit worried about you because trust me, new years is a messy night to go out! Every where is crowded with people who are all really drunk… and that’s only by 10 P.M. It still gets worse after that! I don’t know if you usually spend New Years with your family, but if you do that could be a factor in their decision. Have a really long think about if you really do want to go out, if you decide you do then sit down with your parents and let them voice their concerns about you going out and take it from there. Maybe you will wok out a compromise. Hope this has helped, Tina. Hi Tina, Around this time of year I start to feel very nervous for no other reason than ‘I’m afraid my house may get broken in to’ I know that home invasions rise at this time of year and

13

if (touch wood) it was to every happen to me and my family, I don’t know how I would cope! I wouldn’t feel safe in my own home anymore, I would be constantly worrying about my children’s’ safety and I know that break ins at any time of year can be stressful, but at Christmas/New Years for some reason I imagine the effects would be worse. How can I relax and enjoy the holiday season because I’m driving myself and my partner insane! Worried, Jobstown Hi Worried, The fact that this is prevalent in your mind is a good and bad thing. A good thing, because you’ll be extra vigilant and take all the right measures to secure your house and your family, and a bad thing because you will worry yourself sick! When going to bed every night, remember to lock all doors and windows, pull curtains and maybe leave a light on if you’re that worried. Set your alarm every night and as soon as you settle into bed just remember all the safety measures you have taken and remember that you are making your house and family as safe as possible. Maybe, if you don’t already have one, invest in a motion sensor light or some CCTV cameras on your house. And always be sure to inspect outside your house/ garden for white paint/chalk marks. These can be possible ‘taggings’ on your house for burglars to decipher. You can find an image of what they mean online. I hope this has helped, Tina.

Team Hope do it again

www.tallaghtexpress.com

Dublin people help bring hope to needy children Schools, families, communities and businesses across Dublin have helped bring great hope at Christmas to 27,196 needy children in disadvantaged areas overseas. By taking part in the 2013 Team Hope Christmas Shoebox Appeal, they have turned just another day in a child’s life into something special in Africa, the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. In total, 163,513 shoeboxes were collected throughout Ireland. According to Niall Barry, Team Hope Executive Director, receiving the shoeboxes from Ireland is the highlight of the children’s year. “We’re very appreciative of everyone’s generosity, especially in these hard times, when there are huge demands being made on people. But, on behalf of all the children who will receive shoeboxes, we want to say a huge thank you to all those who made it possible, including all our volunteers, corporate partners and drop-off points. We couldn’t do it without you,” he said. In the receiving country the Team

Congo Hope network of partners are currently delivering the shoebox gifts right into a child’s hands – in hospitals, schools, shelters, churches, orphanages, community centres or family homes. We at Tallaght Express are very privileged to have been a part of this.

Keane welcomes announcement of €50,000 for St. Dominic’s Community Centre as part of Youth Café funding programme Fine Gael Senator for Dublin South West, Cáit Keane, has welcomed the announcement by the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Frances Fitzgerald, that €50,000 is to be awarded to St. Dominic’s Community Centre in Tallaght as part of the €1 million funding to be allocated this year to support the development of new youth cafés across the country and across the Dublin South-West constituency. “This is a welcome announcement by Minister Fitzgerald today as the staff and management at St. Dominic’s community work tirelessly to provide services and activities to the local community including pre-school and after-school sessions, youth clubs and active age classes. The centre is very

deserving of this funding and the availability of these funds reinforces the Government’s commitment to the extension of quality youth café throughout the country, in particular noting the repeated emphasis that young people have placed on the need for safe, alcoholfree recreational facilities. “Since taking office Minister Fitzgerald has already provided €700,000 in 2011 and 2012 for youth café developments and I credit her for the good work she has done in this regard. This funding is a much needed boost to youth services in Dublin South-West; in Rathfarnham, Tallaght, Templeogue and across the constituency and the whole country.I am greatly encouraged by the quality of the projects that have already been grant aided under the previous Youth

Café funding scheme. “The Youth Café Funding Scheme is concerned with promoting the structured development of new youth cafés around the country by giving support to local organisations and groups which are providing youth services. The criteria for the Scheme places a clear focus on both long term sustainability and service planning. The scheme will be administered by Pobal on behalf of the Department. “I have no doubt that St. Dominic’s Community Centre will put this funding to very good use and in a manner that will best serve the needs of all sections of the community in Tallaght.”

New Years Resolutions – Why do they fail?

17

www.tallaghtexpress.com

By Katie Devereux Absolutely everyone has made a new years resolution at some time or another… But just as many people fail at achieving them, have you ever stopped to ask why this is? Have a look; see what ones you’re guilty of!

Making too many resolutions at one time: Yep, you may want to grow your hair longer and quit smoking and lose weight with the ever present promise of ‘New Year, New Me’ but be realistic; you’re not going to do all that in one year. Too many people try for big changes, which is totally fine, but maybe

you have the kind of personality that needs to start with something small and continuous in order to eventually complete the big tasks! (E.G. saying you’re going to knit a whole blanket when you have no knitting skills… lets learn to walk before we can run shall we?)

Adopting someone else’s resolutions: So you’re at a New Years house party, you’re having a few drinks and a conversation breaks out, the inevitable ‘What’s YOUR New Years resolution?’ So you go in a circle answering oneby-one when eventually, someone say they want to travel the world (or something else you may think is really cool) and everyone is amazed! Naturally, you want your resolution to have the same impact, but instead of coming up with your own, you decide to use the same one. You wouldn’t believe how many people actually adopt their friends’ resolutions, but the problem with this is that you have no actual drive to do it! If you did, then you would have thought

of it yourself! Stick to resolutions that interest and benefit YOU, not the people around you. We forget the amount of work that achieving these resolutions actually takes: Yes, we are all guilty of setting ourselves a New Years resolution and just expecting them to happen. We forget to take into the account the amount of time and effort it will take to achieve this! For instance, losing weight… You’re not going to wake up in the morning as the size you want to be, you NEED to diet and you NEED to exercise for significant amounts of time before you even start to see results! If it’s a resolution you’re serious about sticking to, then you need to be realistic about the time frame and results, otherwise you’re setting yourself up for failure. Procrastination!!! This can be a culprit for many people (at any time of the year too!) We put it on the long finger and always think ‘I’ve loads of time, I’ll get to that later’ or ‘I’m not going to start my diet until all the sweets in the house are finished’ There’s a little mantra I like to remind people of, Why do later what you can do right now? Time waits for no one! There are people out there that are so cynical that they expect everyone they know to fail at their resolutions… Why don’t you prove them wrong? And the main reason for not completing New Years Resolutions…. We give up!! That’s right, we quit near straight away. As soon as some work regarding the resolution pops its head up to say hello, we bolt! I don’t know why we do, but we do. Address all these issues and you’re sure to have a successful resolution. Sometimes you have to fix what is wrong instead of thinking of new tactics to get it right!

BMW launch the new M3 Sedan and M4 Coupe The launch of the new BMW M3 Sedan and new BMW M4 Coupe sees BMW M GmbH revealing a new interpretation of the highperformance sports car – and carrying the BMW M philosophy over into the fifth generation of the M3. More than 40,000 examples of the fourth-generation BMW M3 Coupe were built, and now the BMW M4 Coupe is poised to continue this success story. The “M4” badge is a reference to the model series that provides the basis for the new M model – and, for the first time, the Coupe will be introduced at the same time as the four-door variant. Logic dictates the latter will be christened the BMW M3 Sedan. “Four generations of the BMW M3 have blended motor sport genes and uncompromised everyday usability within an emotionally rich overall concept,” explains Dr Friedrich Nitschke, President BMW M GmbH. “The BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M4 Coupe represent an ongoing commitment to this philosophy. The engine is the heart of every M model, and the new turbocharged sixcylinder unit fitted in the two new cars combines the virtues of a high-revving naturally aspirated unit with the strengths of turbocharger technology. A committed lightweight design concept produces a weight saving of around 80 kilograms over the outgoing M3. The BMW M3 and BMW M4 take motor sport technology from the track to the road, and thousands of laps of the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife – the world’s

most exacting race track – have readied the new models for that transition. Meticulous and passionfuelled development work has underpinned the creation of two high-performance sports cars that set new standards in terms of overall concept, precision and agility.” The high-revving six-cylinder in-line engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology newly developed for the new BMW M3 Sedan and new BMW M4 Coupe produces a maximum output of 431 hp. Its peak torque of 550 Newton metres (406 lb-ft) is available across a wide rev band and outstrips the figure recorded by the outgoing BMW M3 by roughly 40 per cent. And yet the engine also achieves a reduction in fuel consumption and emissions of around 25 per cent. Both the BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M4 Coupe cover the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h / 62 mph in 4.1 seconds (with the optional seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission). In the interests of maximising dynamic ability and ensuring

excellent efficiency, weight savings of around 80 kilograms have been achieved over a comparably equipped predecessor model. The BMW M4 Coupe, for example, has a DIN kerb weight of 1,497 kilograms, thanks to the rigorous application of intelligent lightweight design measures. These include the increased use of lightweight materials such as carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) and aluminium for a number of chassis and body components. Indeed, both models feature a carbon roof. One of the primary objectives in the development of the BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M4 Coupe was to ensure the new cars offered impressive race track capability. Hence the presence of a track-specification

cooling system, which ensures that the optimum temperature balance for the engine, turbochargers and transmission is maintained at all times. In order to accentuate the racing character of the two models in terms of both their technical composition and the fine-tuning of the cars, the engineers worked

closely with BMW Motorsport’s professional racing drivers during the development phase. For example, DTM drivers Bruno Spengler and Timo Glock took part in the extensive testing and set-up work carried out at the NürburgringNordschleife circuit. Picture is the all new BMW 4 Coupe.
