development by assisting small scale, non-profit environmental projects at a local level. Projects are recommended for

funding by local authorities following an open call for applications. Funding goes to a wide range of local initiatives; including

“I am delighted with the increased funding which means that 37 projects in the South Dublin County Council area are beneficiaries this year. Tymon Bawn Community Centre At Tymon Bawn Community Centre, they focus on providing a wide range of activities for all ages to cater to the local community. With this is mind they split their attention into three areas; 1. Babies, mothers and playgroups of which they have three i.e. Starlight, Daisy Chain & Four Seasons playgroups. All these groups look after preschool children from 08:30 to 15:00 Monday to Friday. Recently Firhouse Educate Together N/S set up their first Infants class in the centre and they are awaiting the building of their school in Firhouse area. 2. Youth, preteens and teenagers. With this group of people in mind they have a Foroige sponsored youth club which meets every Friday. Also Tallaght Martial Arts Club meets Monday and Wednesday evenings. There is also some Indoor Football on Friday afternoons. Never forgetting the ever present Beavers & Cubs who meet twice a week. 3/. Adults and Seniors, they have Zumba Dancing, Yoga, Bowls and Ladies Choir & Knitting Sessions for the young at heart and the agile elderly. If anyone wants any information regarding any of the above activities they can contact the reception desk in Tymon Bawn Community Centre on 01 - 4521028 and they will help them as best they can. The growth area within their thinking at present would have to be their youth groups i.e. Foroige Youth Club; Sporting activities for the youth grow substantially. There is large competition for children’s time from many different areas and it can be difficult to get children to come out and do something. The Centre thrives to be there for them as an alternative to sitting in or hanging about being idle. Senior numbers have been growing in the Tymon Bawn Area and so they have been looking at a senior’s development plan. This we hope will provide more in the area of drop in type activities which would not require major commitments by the participants.

Cllr Lawlor calls for cap on moneylender interest rates Fine Gael Councillor Brian Lawlor has called for consideration to be given to capping the interest rates charged by moneylenders. His comments come on foot of information which shows that 360,000 people are turning to moneylenders to access cash. “The true scale of this problem is

difficult to estimate, because as well as the 40 licenced moneylenders operating here, an unknown number of unregistered and unscrupulous lenders are also offering loans at unsustainable interest rates. “I am raising this issue now because the incidences of people turning to moneylenders is bound to be on the rise in

the run-up to Christmas,” Cllr Lawlor said. “I would be in favour of the introduction of legislation which could control the excessive interest rates being charged. I believe it is imperative that we consider this issue now, before UK firms such as Wonga start setting up here. “We need to be proactive and responsive

on this issue. We have seen in the UK how so-called payday lenders can have crippling consequences on families and communities. This is already being replicated here. Taking just one loan from a moneylender can drive an individual into unsustainable debt due to spiralling interest rates. We need to look at ways to protect vulnerable people from the worst excesses of the moneylenders’ system.”

Family Law Matters: Children want both parents this Christmas Are you separated and have children? Do you wonder how you’re going to organise the kids seeing both parents this Christmas? Well if so read on. My name is Paul Campbell and I have been working in the area of family law for many years. Although I’m not a solicitor I hold a diploma in Family Law from the Law Society of Ireland and have been assisting parents in the areas of separation, divorce, access, maintenance and other family law issues for many years now all without the aid of a solicitor. So we are all aware Christmas is supposed to be a family occasion for all involved especially the children however when couples split sometimes bitterness prevails and this occasion becomes very traumatic for all involved. We have to remember the children are even more confused and wonder how they are going to see the non resident parent over the festive season. Firstly it’s best, even for just the holiday season to put your differences as ex partners to one side. Remember just because you both do not see eye to eye doesn’t mean your children love you any less. It’s important during a separation to try focus on keeping things as close to the way they were when you were together for the children. If they spent Christmas as a family with both parents when ye were together then that’s exactly what should happen now that you are apart. So let’s look at some solutions to this problem. If you both can be amicable there is no reason why the non resident parent cannot come over to the family home on Christmas Eve and either stay for a few hours or stay over depending on how amicable you both are as parents in order to wake up all together on Christmas morning. If the non resident parent does not stay over on Christmas Eve perhaps they might visit the family home again on Christmas morning to open presents together like ye did when you were both together. Some couples who split are amicable enough to stay together from Christmas Eve until St. Stephen’s day. Whatever ye decide to do it’s also very important that children get to see both sides of extended family over the holiday season and some time should be set aside for this. Weather ye all spend Christmas Eve together or not perhaps an idea would be that children spend Christmas Eve and Christmas morning in their family home and after Christmas dinner go to the non resident’s parents home after dinner either overnight or until Christmas night. This gives the non resident parent time to visit their extended family with the children which can only mean more presents for them. I

know some children who are happy that Santa comes to both parents’ homes because he knows mammy and daddy live apart. Children then get to open 2 sets of presents on both homes. Finally another issue you both need to decide is are you going to split the money for Christmas presents and clothes or are ye each going to get your own individual presents and clothes for the children. Whatever you decide it’s easier for all involved to plan ahead and make this the norm for future years so you don’t end up having this argument every year. I will be doing a piece each edition on a different topic of family law so keep watching. If you have a question or query you would like to ask or would like a private consultation on any area of family law please call me on 01-5487994 or email paul@divorceonline.ie

Party Season Wardrobe Essentials By Stephanie O’Quigley Nothing beats a party quite like a Christmas party. The mood is set by the dim evenings, cosy indoors and having all your family and friends surrounding you. Dressing for these occasions is quite different than any other time of year and before you go grab your trusty sequinned skirts and funky Christmas jumpers, I have a few other Winter themed looks that just might brighten up your Winter wardrobe a little! Green Emerald Maxi Dress. On a more formal night, a full length gown is essential. I picked up this seasonal frock in Born Clothing in Naas recently for a bargain price of €45. The emerald green colour is completely classy and bang on trend. It’s minimal so you can make it your own with statement accessories or even a fur bolero which are a top fashion pick of the season too. Beige Velvet Skater Dress. This Topshop skater dress is flattering on most silhouettes. It covers the arms, something us Irish ladies always gravitate towards. However, this is a full on shiny number. Limit it to a night with the girls or even for St. Stephens’ night, when the parties are at their peak. The high shine velvet is a great alternative to fussy sequins. Long Sleeved Floral Satin Jumpsuit. Another amazing long sleeved number! This time from the ever so popular online boutique, MissGuided.co.uk. I love this satin finish playsuit and the red floral print gives a hint of a Christmas feel without going overboard. The good thing about the black is that you can pop a pair of black tights underneath for warmth and coverage. This will dress the playsuit down nicely. But if you do dare to bare, be sure to tan your pins a Winter bronze to make sure you are glowing just as much as the season. Glowing All The Way... In preparation for the parties ahead, a dewy and illuminated make-up look fits the bill to a T. Its all about glamorising your normal make-up to give it the red carpet signature sheen for the numerous late nights ahead. And for first timers, don’t worry as you can illuminate as little or as much as you like! The Kardashian K24 Primer is a product used to get that signature Kardashian look. Its made to be worn under make-up, so its easy to apply as you don’t have to worry about technique in application. This is ultra glitter so use a pea size amount on areas such as under the brow bone, on the tops of your cheeks and in between your brows to achieve a perfect party glow. When you apply your foundation over this, you will notice your skin is a lot brighter and awake looking. Apply a full face of the primer for a noticeable sparkly shine. For those of you who just a touch of shine, this Lightening Touch Radiance pen from The Body Shop is both easy to use and effective. Its handy for detailed area’s and perfect for keeping in your handbag for top-ups later in the night. Dab this around your eye area, on your cupids bow or even use it as an eye shadow. Its €20 but has numerous uses and is even perfect for any skin tone. Top Tip! If anyone is an illuminator beginner, I would start with just brightening the eye area. Flick some illuminator on top on your tear duct and under the brow bone. It will brighten your eyes and make them look bigger instantly. This is a neat trick to switch your office make-up into night-time glamour too.

Gravity

Ghosts Call of Duty: Ghosts Review Well here it is guys, the new CoD game has landed! Once again the masses queued outside for the midnight launch for the newest update in the series-CoD Ghosts. As with every game, there’s both the campaign mode and the online mode, but now a new co op mode known as extinction. The campaign is based on the north American resistance fighting against a new super power, known as The Federation, pushing up from Latin America. The game opens with The Federation turning the Americans WMD known as “ODIN” a space station filled with tactical Nukes, against them. This leaves the States, powerless to the onslaught of The Federation, with only a few cities left standing. Your name is Logan, and with the help of your brother, and their dog.... yes a dog...you become what is know as a Ghost. A member of an elite combat group, who very few know exist, and even fewer have seen in combat and lived to tell the tale. Extinction is Ghosts answer to zombies. Though instead of fighting countless hordes of the undead and trying to survive for as long as you can, you fight against aliens. This is much the same as Zombies, thought Extinction has various missions for you to complete, to advance to the next round, rather than just kill 10 Zombies advance. Also the elements play a large part in this game mode, allowing you to place gas canisters at strategic points to blow them up, as well as allowing the player to electro charge a fence as added defence. Now there’s one reason and one reason alone these games are so popular, and that’s for the online play. Nobody really concentrates on the campaign mode, including the game developers. For instance, why have all the ad campaigns for all the CoD games since Modern Warfare(The fourth game in the series), been showcasing online multiplayer? That’s the community aspect of the game. Playing online with your friends, showcasing your skills and talents, and proving who’s the best. Going against gamers of similar skill levels, and decimating them, making you feel invincible. These games above all others, have the ability to either make you feel like a God when you do well, or make you furious that you’ve done badly. Call of Duty for me, has always been about making you feel part of your team, playing with your friends, learning their strengths and weaknesses, knowing how to play alongside them, as one unit, rather than six headless chickens, running around the map with no clue what to do. With the exception of the original Modern Warfare, and Black Ops one, the CoD franchise has become stale, and repetitive. This years instalment, based around the same tried and tested method”You kill them before they kill you”, has cemented the fact that the reign of call of duty as the king of all games has come to an end. This years game-Ghosts has nothing new to add to the cash cow. The multiplayer is the same as it always was, with a few changes to

make it seem fresher than it has been. This game has over 6000 customisable character options, meaning the likelihood of you ever bumping into someone with the same load out as you is quite rare. Also the devs introduced a “knee slide” which is UTTERLY USELESS, seeing as it doesn’t get you into cover any faster. With nothing to reignite the flame of gamers wanting something fresh to play, this game doesn’t feel new, more like a revamp of MW3. Overpowered weaponry and too little health are amongst a plethora of problems with this game. Due to the limitations of the game, all game modes are restricted to having 12 players per map. Now, that doesn’t sound so bad, but when the maps themselves are the size of Galway, actually finding any enemy combatants is a skill in itself. So what happens then? You spend your time running around the map, trying to find enemies, only to be shot in the back by one that has just re-spawned behind you. The spawns in Ghost are erratic at best. What I can’t understand is how, after almost 10 years, the game devs still can’t get a spawn system right? As a lover of the CoD series, it saddens me to say that i don’t enjoy playing this game. This game should have been their final stand on current gen consoles, and it should have the game all other FPSs aspire to. But it isn’t. We wanted the next level of Call of Duty, but instead got a campaign that was far too similar to Modern Warfare, and a multiplayer left unbalanced and repetitive. On a personal note-All you kids still getting beaten here’s a load out to help: MSBS-Red Dot Sight-Suppressor Off The Grid-Quick draw-On the Go Concussion-Semtex Kev2Dee

The holiday season is upon us! This means all shopping centres are ridiculously packed full of people trying to salvage what they have left of the shopping time! It means the Christmas decorations are being hung with care and it also mean the ice skating period has begun! Here are some basic do’s and don’ts to ensure you have the best experience you possibly can! DO – remember to wear really thick, woolly socks or two pairs of normal socks! Those skates can be quite painful when you least expect it. Better to have overly protected feet than cuts and blisters, am I right?! DON’T – Think you’ll get away with wearing jeans and a t-shirt! Yes, you may get warm and flustered under all those layers of jackets and scarves when you’re swishing around the rink like Torvill and Dean, doing you best impression of the Bolero (Or your favourite routine from ‘Blades of Glory’) But unless you’re actually a trained skater, you will more than likely spend about 50% of your time sliding bum-first into the barriers. Remember, Ice = Cold! You better wrap up! DO – Take care to not drag random strangers down with you when your triple spin doesn’t go quite according to plan! Trust me, when you’re falling after a failed attempt to strut your stuff on the ice, the best thing you can do is protect your head, curl your fingers into a tight fist and brace yourself for the crash! Prepare to be sporting a few new bruises in the following days! DON’T – Try any special tricks or jumps whether you are professionally trained or not. It may be hazardous to other skaters and although it may look very cool, I don’t think the ushers would appreciate the potential danger you may be putting yourself and others in! DO – Have a blast!!! Ice skating only comes around once a year! Make the most of it and stay safe!!

Tallaght MusicScene

Saggarts New Talent – Paddy Ryan By Katie Devereux New up and coming artist from Saggart, Paddy Ryan spoke to me about how he became interested in music and what he some day hopes to be! 1. Tell me a bit about yourself, Paddy. I come from Saggart, born to a family of 8 (including my parents) we all speak fluent Irish, but we don’t always speak it. When I was a kid, I think I was about 6 years old, my father, Jim Ryan, gave me a whistle… a tiny little one and I started blowing it, I just loved the noise it made so I would try to play little tunes, which looking back on now, probably was really irritating (laughs) When I was growing up I always saw my eldest brother James practicing banjo and he inspired me to go further. 2. What sparked your interest in performing? Good question I perform music in a way a person displays there art. Not many people understand a musicians eyes and I like to try my best and give my best most of the time. I guess just growing up in a fairly musical family pushed me to do what I’m doing now, I love to go busking in town because I feel that’s the best way for people to hear my music, I’m going to make a living for my self the hard way, I’m going to do it on my own. 3. How would you describe your style/ genre? My style genre is a hard one to describe because I have an interest in traditional music also but im mainly inspired by Ben Howard and his musical art I also love Kings of Leon and Mumford and Sons. I’m not sure of my original style because I have interests in rap music and all other types if you know what I mean. I’m quite eclectic! 4. Would you say you have a large fan base? I’m not sure what my fan base is but I do have 900+ likes on my like page on facebook so im not sure on the answer but it really means a lot that I know that somebody likes my music. Hopefully there will be more people that like it and enjoy what I do as much as myself. I’m just going to keep working really hard at it until I get my name out there. 5. What are your hopes for the future? My hopes for the future are to be professional or at least act like I am (Laughs) and also to be on the same level as some performers that turn a blind eye to me on the streets when I busk. Who knows, maybe one day I will be collaborating with them! 6. What is your favourite memory of performing? Memories, I have so many! My all time

favourite, my near tear dropping memory was when I got to meet my idol and play tunes with him. A flute player from England called Michael McGoldrick. He is unbelievable! Hopefully I can play again with this man… Another great experience was in New York, I went to see my singing idol Ben Howard and his support act Michael Kiwanuka , anyway after the gig me and Malachy McNally decided to play some trad and it was just an over all amazing experience! Thanks for taking the time out of your busy schedule to talk to me Paddy! You can find Paddy Ryan on Facebook by going to www. facebook.com/paddyryanmusiciain you can also find his music on Youtube, all you have to do is search his name!

The Burning Question What is your Favourite Christmas Tradition? Deirdre, 35, Springfield – I love watching the kids open their presents on Christmas morning, the excitement on their little faces is so cute

big day ahead! I also love having a sly Irish coffee or two with my dad on Christmas day

Phil, 30, Tallaght – I actually really like how it brings everyone together and not just family, I get Christmas cards from people I haven’t spoke to in years!

Anthony, 29, Tallaght – I drive my son around loads of estates on Christmas Eve so he can see all the houses with the big Christmas lights and decorations outside. It’s a nightmare to get him to bed afterwards because he does be so excited!

Katie, 20, Bolbrook – I love going to midnight mass on Christmas eve with my family, afterwards we get a take away and relax for the

Vivian, 49, Tallaght - I love putting up the Christmas tree… Even though every year, myself and my husband have killings over the tree lights.

This weeks Jokes Barty was trapped in a bog and seemed a goner when Big Mick O’Reilly wandered by. “Help!” Barty shouted, “Oi’m sinkin’!” Don’t worry,” assured Mick. “Next to the Strong Muldoon, Oi’m the strongest man in Erin, and Oi’ll pull ye right out o’ there.” Mick leaned out and grabbed Barty’s hand and pulled and pulled to no avail. After two more unsuccessful attempts, Mick said to Barty, “Shure, an’ Oi can’t do it. The Strong Muldoon could do it alone, mebbe, but Oi’ll have to get some help.”

As Mick was leaving, Barty called “Mick! Mick! D’ye think it will help if Oi pull me feet out of the stirrups? ***** Jimy-Joe went to a pet shop and asked how many budgies were in stock. “We have 99” replied the shop owner “Give us the lot” said the Jimmy-Joe, paid for them and left. He went to a tailors shop and had 99 pockets sewn into a jacket, put a budgie in each pocket, went up to the Post Office Tower and jumped off. He hit the ground with an almighty smack and lay there groaning until a passer-by came and asked him what had happened. “I don’t know sur” he replied “but that’s the last time I try that budgie jumping”

Dear Tina, I’m not sure what to do and I was hoping you could help me, I’m too embarrassed to talk to any body else about this because I don’t want them to judge me or think I’m vain. I would really, really love to start modelling. I’m quite a tall girl and I have a slim build and I’d like to think that I’m pretty enough for it but I’m afraid of two things. 1.Peoples opinions of me changing and thinking I’m too vain and 2. Being rejected from any type of agency I apply to. How can I overcome this? Sarah, Tallaght. Hi Sarah! First of all, let me tell you that there is no harm in being proud of your genes just as long as you do not rub it in peoples faces and constantly tell them how beautiful you think you are. If you’ve got it, flaunt it! A lot of people may actually admire your confidence in yourself. If they

POSTSCRIPT

Based on a true story of a search for identity. A poignant and humorous account of a woman turned detective on a mission to reveal the truth. ‘From a very early age I was told I was adopted. In fairness I think my parents had no choice but to tell me, what with me being redheaded with pale skin in a family with dark skin and dark hair – this made it pretty obvious that something wasn’t right. As a child I loved being able to say I was adopted (because it made me feel exotic), I also learned that it was a word that was used by adults with a dropped voice. ‘Bad blood will out’ was a phrase that was often thrown around in conversation in relation to adopted children in 70’s and 80’s Ireland.’

‘A moving story..powerful piece of work’. The Irish Times ‘a gentle, sad, funny delight’. Sunday Independent ‘a haunting retrospective that makes you question the family history written on your face and buried in your genes’ Irish Theatre Magazine.

are really close family and friends that you are referring to, then their opinions shouldn’t change at all… For the minute fraction of people who may change their opinion, all I can tell you is, jealousy is a terrible thing ;) Second, from what you have emailed me, you do seem to be quite self confident so don’t let the fear of rejection take that from you. It may happen for you, it may not but what’s for you won’t pass you! Give it a shot, what have you got to loose? If some agencies do reject you, it doesn’t mean all of them will! It’s good to see that you are being realistic and considering all possible out comes as modelling can be a very cut-throat industry. My advice to you would be to take all the necessary steps in making this dream happen and don’t let other people hold you back from what you would like to do with your life! Let me know how you getting on, Tina. Dear Tina, I’ve been staying home from school a lot recently to help out at home because my Mam has cancer. I’m 16 years old, my dad has to work and my little brother is too young to deal with any of this (he is only 8.) Anyway, I really feel like I’m missing out on a lot of school work and spending time with my friends and it upsets me a lot because if I don’t do well in school I wont be able to get into college and I’m afraid that if I’m taking care of my Mam all the time then my friends will stop wanting me to hang out with them because I’m never around! Is this a really selfish way to feel? Upset, Brookfield

17

Hi ‘Upset’ (But hopefully for not much longer!) I’m really sorry to hear about what your mother is going through and I would like to commend you for how strong and brave you are. Not many people your age would be as mature as you are, you seem to have a good head between your shoulders! I understand that it can be upsetting to miss out on certain aspects of your childhood (I use the term loosely) and there is nothing selfish about that at all! You may find this website helpful www. carersireland.com/youngcarers.php You could go into the head office of your school and explain your situation to them. They may be able to organise for you to still receive the class notes and homework assignments to do at home and email in to them. It’s better to let them know what’s going on rather then let them think that you may be slacking. As for your friends, I’m sure they understand that you have to take care of your mother and your true friends will stick by you no matter what. Maybe one or two evenings a week, when your dad is home from work you can organise to go do something with your friends so you don’t feel so isolated. I really hope this advice has helped you, Tina.

Express Motoring JEEP WRANGLER SCOOPS TOP OFF-ROAD HONOUR FOR SECOND CONSECUTIVE YEAR

www.tallaghtexpress.com

ALL NEW, ALL MINI: THE NEW MINI HATCH REVEALED ‘The New Original’ – distinctly familiar, yet completely fresh from the ground up. MINI set the standard in 2001, raised it in 2006 and now does so again. MINI has unveiled the new MINI Hatch, the car which has defined a segment since 2001. Even though the new MINI is instantly recognisable – something which comes from having such a globally identifiable design – the car is completely new from the ground up. Every component has been back to the drawing board in an effort to optimise its function, performance and style. The result is ‘The New Original’, a MINI which is distinctly familiar but enhanced in every single way. It features significant improvements in technology, engine efficiency and power delivery, driving dynamics, quality and – of course – personalisation. Inside, the new MINI Hatch is quieter than the outgoing model, with improvements to acoustic refinement inside the cabin.

The legendary Jeep Wrangler continues to demonstrate its award-winning credentials after taking 4x4 Magazine’s 4x4 of the Year, Hardcore class for the second year running. The award, which goes specifically to the four-door Wrangler, comes from the specialist publication’s panel of expert judges, who put the rugged US-built offroader above some extremely capable competitors. In the same awards, Jeep’s new Grand Cherokee received a Highly Commended

accolade in the Premiums category. In awarding it top honours, the 4x4 of the Year competition judges praised the Wrangler’s value for money, comfortable interior, off-roading ability, towing prowess and iconic design. “The Jeep Wrangler remains 4x4 Magazine’s Hardcore Class champion. It effortlessly demonstrates its off-road capabilities with immense power and torque, while delivering a gorgeously low, first crawler gear for when finesse is needed,” says Nigel Fryatt, editor, 4x4 Magazine.

“All this in a comfortable, well equipped interior. Our only real criticism? There should be more of them around.” “It’s the classic 4x4 vehicle that is instantly recognisable the world over. The Jeep Wrangler is the essence of what Jeep stands for and we’re honoured to receive a top award such as the Hardcore 4x4 of the Year,” says Yann Chabert, Country Director, Fiat Group Automobiles Ireland. Pricing and specifications for the 2014 Jeep Wranger and Jeep Grand Cherokee will be announced shortly.

The new MINI Hatch is more spacious than before, safer, finished to an even higher standard and provides the driver with a more dynamic and performanceoriented experience behind the wheel. Inside the cabin, new technology ensures that the new MINI is the most connected car in its segment. A new LED display concept, the first of its kind, provides the driver with visual feedback whilst operating the car and creates a premium ambience. It reflects a maturity and confidence in the brand’s design and engineering, a car which pays tribute to its unique British heritage yet stands ready to lead MINI into the second half of the decade and beyond. MINI pioneered the concept of automotive personalisation and that spirit of individuality continues with the new Hatch. The list of interior and exterior customisable components, and the options for them, is extensive. Most popular are expected to be a John Cooper Works rear spoiler, various decorative trims for roof, exterior mirrors, bonnet, seat upholstery, interior surfaces and new Colour Lines. The new MINI Cooper Hatch now starts at €22,530 OTR. This represents only a .6 per cent increase compared against the outgoing model and customers benefit from a host of additional equipment including the on-board computer.
