The Kindness of Your Community By Katie Devereux St. Marys National School located on the Greenhills road was recently shocked by the generosity and good will of some parents of the child cares pupils when they offered to paint the building free of charge. Greg and Chris both have children that attend the day care centre and when they noticed that the paintwork on the building was beginning to peel, they were more than happy to offer a helping hand! I spoke to Bernie, the manager of St. Marys CCS and she told me of their kindness. “The paint was starting to peel on the front of the building and it wasn’t looking like it was going to last another winter, then one of the parents pointed out that I should really look into getting the building repainted. I start explaining how I would love to paint it but I just didn’t have the money as I was trying to get more equipment for the playground for the children. The father that had pointed it out to me then said that if I ever wanted to get it painted to let him know as his friend was a painter decorator and he knew a little bit about it too. I wasn’t going to pass up an offer like that but it was the end

that they volunteered to us free of charge! The only thing I did was offer them pizza and the only drink they would accept was water, and they both did such an amazing job! I honestly couldn’t have done it without them and I’m absolutely blown away by their kindness and generosity, they’re both members of the Polish community and I just thought it was a story worth telling, one that would let the people of Tallaght know that there are more genuine people out there than they know!”

of the school year, we closed up in June so I assumed that nothing more would come of it. When we came back in September the parent came back into me and said that as soon as the weather improves, himself and his friend were going to start painting. So he measured up, he told me how much paint I was going to need and I handed him over the card to go and get the paint. On the morning of Saturday the 21st of September at about twenty to eight in the morning he came back with his friend and they didn’t leave here until twenty to nine that night. That is thirteen hours of their time

Below is a thank you message from Bernie to Greg and Chris for completing this selfless deed for St. Marys CCS. The world would be a better place if there were more men like them! “A massive Thank you to Greg and Chris (parents of Malwina and Filip) who volunteered their time and a huge amount of energy to paint the outside of the building on Saturday. They worked really hard on this and I am completely bowled over by their generosity. Thank you on behalf of all management, staff, children and parents who use this centre this will mean that the building will last the winter without any problems. Thank you believe it or not I am lost for words. Bernie”

Tallaght Community Arts Artistic Director wins 2013 Beckett Studentship Award

Jimmy Deenihan, T.D, Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht will join with Dr Patrick Prendergast, Provost of Trinity College Dublin (TCD), Dr. Eric Weitz, Head of Drama at TCD and Mr. KunleAnimashaun, the successful applicant for the 2013 Samuel Beckett Studentship. The Annual Beckett Studentship is funded jointly by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and Trinity College Dublin Visual and Performing Arts Fund. The Studentship was initiated after the Beckett Centenary celebrations in 2006 and is worth €10,000 to the successful scholar. The winner is selected by a combination of written submission and interview. The Minister was delighted to announce that the candidate who best met the criteria for the award was Mr. Kunle Animashaun. Mr. Animashaun’s work examines the relationship between the presentation of humour in a text or performance and how applicable, effective or ineffectual the humour within the text or performances.

The research work will focus on the step from social situation to theatre performance, with particular regard to multicultural contexts. Minister Deenihan said "I want to thank Dr Patrick Prendergast, Provost of Trinity College Dublin and Dr. Eric Wietz, for their commitment to this initiative. It is appropriate that we continue to commemorate Samuel Beckett in this way. In recent years, we have seen 7 students of Trinity College receive funding to advance their research. This year's recipient has chosen a very interesting topic, that of 'humour in text and performance'. I am impressed that as well as being a scholar you are also a practitioner and are working with Tallaght Community Arts as Artistic Director. I'm sure your research will be, not just interesting and informative, but entertaining as well." The Minister congratulated the successful scholar, Kunle Animashaun and wished him continued success with his academic endeavours.

Solstice in the Newgrange Chamber on December 21st. This years theme is: The annual Winter Solstice sun show at Newgrange is a world famous event. Five thousand years ago the Neolithic builders engineered the monument so that sunlight could enter the vaulted chamber at dawn on the shortest days of the year. On clear Solstice mornings, the chamber at the end of the passage is illuminated and bathed

in a wonderful golden glow. Cllr Lawlor said: “I am delighted to see that the OPW are once again running this great art competition, which provides a wonderful opportunity for six lucky children to be in the chamber at Newgrange for the Winter Solstice. The competition was very successful last year, with over 800 entries from all over Ireland and I hope that this year we can see a big number from the area..” “This is a fantastic opportunity

to participate in a great art competition and also experience something truly phenomenal in being present during the Winter solstice. It is a great opportunity for school children to get access to some of our ancient heritage and experience the wondrous sights that take place at Newgrange.” “I would like to wish all applicant the best of luck and to encourage all students to put in an application.”

Children in Tallaght West to benefit from €4m investment in early intervention Children and families in Tallaght West are set to benefit after €4m has been allocated to early intervention programmes, which are targeted at the most disadvantaged in the community. The area has been identified as one of the Area Based Responses to Child Poverty in the country which the Department of Children and Youth Affairs and Atlantic Philanthropies have committed funding to. The new programme of work is to be coordinated by the Childhood Development Initiative (CDI) and continue until 2016 – with thousands of families and children to be targeted. Announcing the ‘next chapter’ of prevention and early intervention work in the area, CDI Chief Executive Marian Quinn said she was delighted that this

funding has been committed and said that CDI would be consulting widely with the community to identify new programmes that would best meet community needs. “We are delighted to have this further opportunity to work together with the community in Tallaght West to support better outcomes for children and families. “In particular CDI plans to support a new early intervention programme specifically for 0-3 year olds – and there will be widespread engagement with parents and service providers in the coming months to agree this. Also elements of CDI’s existing programmes including Doodle Den, Speech and Language Therapy, Restorative Practice and the Early Years service will be continued.” CDI has considerable experience of working in Tallaght West, after overseeing

seven prevention and early intervention prevention programmes in the area since 2007. These programmes have engaged with approximately 5,000 children and parents improving literacy, speech and language skills, health in schools, community safety and conflict resolution. All of the programmes have been rigorously evaluated to determine if they are effective and the interventions which are continuing are those which were found to bring greatest benefit to children. The development was welcomed warmly by Mayor of South Dublin County Council, Cllr. Dermot Looney who attended the announcement at CDI’s Office at Fettercain. “CDI has provided an excellent model of how we can improve outcomes for children by evaluating services to identify what really

A 28 year mechanical engineering student from Tallaght has been shortlisted for the highly-prestigious 2013 global James Dyson award. Michael Walsh, a Masters graduate from DCU, is one of two Dublin students in the running to win the global James Dyson award which has a grand prize of €35,000 plus €12,000 for the design department at the winner’s college. Mark’s invention “Beat Watch” is a watch that detects heart problems and alert professional medical services in emergencies. BeatWatch can be worn by everyone, but is particularly relevant to people suffering from heart illness or people who know they are at risk. The unit operates on either a local WIFI connection or through mobile networks via SIM card, logging data to provide information to act as a reference source to keep the user informed of their current health in order to preserve their future health. The watch also has an emergency feature

to alert the user that they are over-exerting themselves. If the user cannot recover from the alert, the watch can convey crucial data to carers/ emergency services. Beat Watch is now in the running for the 2013 global James Dyson Awards along with

nine other inventions from students across Ireland. Dyson engineers will announce the global top 20 finalists on the 10th of October and the overall winner will be chosen personally by James Dyson on the 7th of November 2013.

Pink To Make The Boys Wink! By Stephanie O’Quigley

From what we have seen on the recent catwalks of London and New York Fashion Weeks, pink is set to take hold of our high-street stores as the colour of the season. It’s rare that a lighter and brighter colour is a trend in the colder months, but pinkie hues are what Autumn/Winter 2013 fashion is all about. Anything from a pastel strawberry ice-cream to blushing vintage right through to a bold magenta, pink, in all its forms, is making a wave in the fashion world. I have yet to come across a girl who doesn’t wear a little bit of pink and as a personal favourite, I couldn’t be happier with this seasons staple shade. Whether it’s a strong fuchsia or a more subtle salmon tone you prefer, there is an abundance of rosy shades out on the high-street to choose from. So there you have it, a touch of pink for every lady. Whatever way you like to wear it, keep it simple. Even if it’s a lighter shade, less is truly more. (River Island Pointed Court) Pointed heels are a trend I thought I never wanted to see coming back but with the Kardashian sisters constantly sporting their classy courts, I’ve been won over. However, for a fraction of the price of their real deal Louboutins, you can have these bold magenta statement shoes. Match these with a simple outfit and let ‘em do all the talking. (Topshop Pink Bow Shorts) These baby doll shorts are what this pink trend is all about! With the touch of the bow, these are perfect for any ultimate girly girl. Add a plain white blouse and some vintage style pearls to top off the feminine feel.

(Penneys Dusky Pink Oversized Coat) This dusky pink oversized coat from Penneys is a piece that can work with any outfit. Because of its lighter shade, you can match it from work to a casual weekend. For €40, it’s a real steal that’s is sure to last you through the season.

(Topshop Cami Dress) Not only are ‘spaghetti straps’ coming back on the fashion radar, this luminous cerise number is complimentary to this season trend too. The Topshop cami, which comes in multiple shades, resembles Summer nights that we’d rather not forget and is perfect for hiding any lumps or bumps that us women worry about. Grab your tallest heels and rock the frock!

(Penneys V Neck Dress) Your old LBD may have seen better days and this season’s replacement is all about the Little Pink Dress. With the help of a golden glow and stilettos, you can really dress this number up! Don’t be afraid to accessorise this simple piece with plenty of jewellery to make it your own.

(River Island Magenta Jumper) For the more casual pink lady, this cosy jumper is the perfect pullover for the cooler days. Its bright enough to stand out but its laid back style means it not too over the top for mid-week outings. If you’ve ever experienced that horrid make-up line around your own (or some other poor souls) jaw-line, you can understand that a true matching foundation shade is more important and hard to find than people think. And if you’re anything like me, the foundation shades stocked by the regular pharmacy brands are still a little too dark, even in their lightest ‘Ivory’ shades.

Perfect Pales By Stephanie O’Quigley

www.snappedup.ie Twitter - @StephanieOQ Facebook – Facebook.com/ SnappedUpBlog

When I’m not sporting my Cocoa Brown natural tan glow, I rely on a perfect matching foundation shade for my Casper the friendly ghost, typically Irish, skin. The quest with us Irish lasses is that we are not only paler than the rest of the world, but we are quite pinky too, meaning our skin has pink undertones rather than yellow. This can make it even more difficult to find a foundation that suits but fear not, there is a solution out there for you. MAC have released brand new shades of their ever-so-popular Studio Fix Foundation. This time one of their lightest yet, in NW13 is perfect for the Irish Snow White beauties with natural rosy cheeks. The foundation is high quality, like all their products and gives medium to heavy coverage. This will set you back €32.50 which is a small price to pay for top quality make-up that really lasts. Available at Brown Thomas. Bobbi Brown Long-wear Even Finish Foundation in Porcelain (0) is their lightest shade and also a good, pasty match for our dewy complexions. This is water based foundation which is perfect for dry skin and it also comes in stick form which means application is made easier. Priced around €38, is more expensive than most however, this is a long lasting foundation, with pink undertones and an SPF of 15. It may be one to buy on payday but don’t be afraid to ask for a sample before you pay full wack. Available at Brown Thomas. For a cheaper alternative, try Bourjois Healthy Mix Foundation in Light Vanilla (53) for just under €15. This is perfect for everyday wear and gives you lighter coverage but a radiant, luminous glow. With upto 16 hours of staying power, this sweet smelling foundation is also suitable for combination skin. You are losing out on any SPF protection but if you pop on a facial SPF beforehand, you’ll be good to go! Available in Boots and all good pharmacies nationwide.

Fran Smith of Trevor Francis, Spawell Hair Salon – Tallaghts Number 1 Stylist By Katie Devereux

How/when did you decide you wanted to become a hairdresser? I just kind of fell into it. I worked as a barber in St. Kings Street, where Stephens Green Centre is now. I used to train there while I was in school so I’d go in and work on Saturdays. I just found it quite easy to do. Before I left school I was a qualified barber, then I worked in Peter Mark in Kilnamanagh for a few years.

the older technique where you cut all the weight out of the hair first. It’s the first brand new hair cutting technique since probably Vidal Sassoon. Do you get a bit nervous cutting someone’s hair when they have specific requests that they’d like you to meet? Not at all! Never. I’m too long at it to be honest. Even when I was first starting out I was never nervous because I had the eye for it, I knew what I was doing.

Was hairdressing a difficult profession to break in to?

Was it difficult to open your own salon?

I didn’t think it was, because I was good at it, it was very easy for me. As I said, before I left school I was a qualified barber, then I went to work in Peter Mark. After working there for two years I was already a top stylist in the company. I did all the haircuts and hair styles with Gary Kavanagh. Once they seen you had talent, you were automatically excelled up the ladder.

Yeah, it was difficult in the eighties when I first opened because you couldn’t get any funding from the banks, and they haven’t changed. There was a time when they would give out money; back in the tiger years but prior to that you couldn’t get a penny. You had to be creative. The hair dressing companies would do good deals and supply you with stuff if you paid them off by the month, but other than that it couldn’t be done.

What contributes to your inspiration for creating a hairstyle? I don’t really know, I just have this knack for it! I would just watch people walking down the road, or even if I’m away on holiday and I would pay attention to their hairstyle, it would inspire you and hit you with an idea, and then you just have to develop it. So your inspiration comes from other people. It comes from all around you? I’d still be able to just sit down and come up with a style though. We created a new technique to cutting hair and its called reverse graduation. It reverses the way you cut hair but it finds the natural weight lines in the haircut so you can work with them as opposed to

Are there any particular styles you think will be quite popular for the winter? Well you see all these younger girls with the shaved sides and long hair. It’s usually women over 30 that would get their hair cut short and styled. You take a line of about 50 young girls and probably only about two of them would have styles hair cuts.

Can you tell me about online Hair School? It started 5 years ago and was the first in the world. I had made about 10 tutorials for training stylists. We couldn’t believe that ‘online hair school’ name was free, we were in shock. We streamed a few videos on

YouTube when it all first started off and we used to be in the top 50 of Irish hit websites so it was really amazing. To subscribe to the online hair school is quite cheap and it’s an amazing learning aid for anybody training to be a hairstylist. There is 30 years of haircutting experience on the site so all the information they need would be on the site. I had a look at the online hair school website and from what I can see; you work an awful lot with short hair, is this because it’s harder to do? It is a lot harder to do! There’s more skill involved, more attention to detail. Short hair requires a lot more precision and finesse. For long hair, all you can really do is trim the end and maybe tidy up layers and a fringe, we tend to focus more on short haircuts

because there is more learning in it. Do you have any styling tips or secrets you’d like to share with our readers? Well I’d say for people with fuzzy, unmanageable hair, there is a treatment called the 12 week blowdry. All it is, is a keratin treatment for the hair, its pure protein. It takes all the frizz out of the hair and leaves it manageable and smooth. Calling it a 12 week blowdry is probably incorrect because when it first came out it was full of formaldehyde and other chemicals, but they have all been taken out of it now so it does absolutely no damage to the hair whatsoever. For any other tips just go to the online hair school, they’re all there. (Laughs)

GTA V

Insidious Chapter 2 Running Time : 106 minutes Release Date : 13 September 2013 Director: James Wan Basic Plot : The Lambert family seek to uncover a mysterious childhood secret that has left them dangerously connected to the spirit world, or the further as they call it.

By Kevin Doyle

By David Lynch It’s that time off that time of the year again all football gamers have been waiting for the latest instalment of the football franchise FIFA 14, brought to you by EA Sports. Yes the game is back FIFA 14, and with it EA Sports have brought with it a whole new innovation of both in game play and online play. FIFA 14 has returned with improved game play features to make the game more realistic then previous FIFA’s throughout the years. Then most important thing to gamers is the realistic view of the sport they love. This year improvements have been made to that all important finishing shot, precision movement, real ball physics, team intelligence and protection of the ball. Players will find the game play a little strange to get used to at first but will soon realise the joy of these all new realistic features. For example players will notice when it comes to real ball physics, it determines the trajectories of balls in game, enabling players to strike the ball with force from distance or drill low rising shots with accuracy. Personally speaking from my view of playing FIFA 14, these are the aspects all gamers have been waiting for. Along with the new and improved in game features, FIFA 14 has also brought in new features regarding the classic game modes of career mode and be a pro. It really is the little things that matter to gamers. This year players will be excited about the new global transfer market in career mode, something which has been seriously lacking in the game for many years. This year sees a total revamp of the transfer market, discover the new “Messi” with a detailed scouting market which allows players the find that next big superstar in the world of football. Off course we can’t forget the highly exciting online game play of building your ultimate team and co-op seasons with allow players to play with other players around the world. Every year EA Sports try to surpass previous FIFA’s that have been released. I think gamers will love the new features and will spend many hours in front of the big screen playing and building their ultimate team. FIFA 14 is available on all major consoles and is for ages three years and up.

Well ladies and gentlemen, we have it. Rockstars GTA V has finally landed. Much like Call of Duty, GTA is an institution within gaming. However, unlike the Call of Duty developers who publish a new game every holiday season, Rockstar decided to go against the grain, and take their sweet time, to bring us possibly the best GTA to date, and based on the queue of people outside various retailers, its fair to assume is still as popular now, as it ever was before. GTA V keeps the same mechanic as it always has, but this time, on an entirely larger scale. In previous games, you were given a fictional city to roam around in(and burn to the ground), but this new version gives the player a city yes, but on entirely unprecedented scale. Previous games gave you a citythis, feels like an entire country is at your fingertips, due to the rural areas, in which I can guarantee, you’ll get lost in! The game itself, is based around three characters, unlike the solo character from GTA V’s predecessors, allowing the player to take control of the protagonists-Michael, Franklin and Trevor, each of whom have their own individual traits and quirks, allowing the gamer to enjoy playing each one separately, rather than feeling like carbon copies of one another with a new face. The game has reintroduced the skill bar, showing how the developers of the game listened to the cries of the community. This dramatically influences how the game is played, based on how often the player takes part in certain activities. For example, at the beginning, driving skill as well as fighting skill are low, but the more you fight and drive, the more XP you gain, better you become. This game is insanely good fun, irrespective if you’ve been a fan of the GTA series-and I can honestly say im not. This game brings back the fun element into gaming, with unlimited possibilities, from stealing a standard car and modifying it to have five jet thrusters strapped to the back; to being able to steal a military jet. GTA V is the only game EVER where players would rather listen to the adverts playing on the radio, rather than the music, because it’s funny. To honestly sum up this game in one wordEpic. From the comical one liners, to the size of the game, to how the game feels to play, its truly good fun. Not for the faint hearted, or easily offended, GTA V really shows what can be done on current gen consoles, and I doubt you’ll find anything half as fun on the next gen consoles, for a long time. I recently went to see the second installment of Insidious; once again the Lambert family is tormented by ghosts/spirits. Straight away I was annoyed, the title shot up on the screen with an extremely old-school horror “feel”. I just felt that the whole movie over all tried too hard to make the film have an old-fashioned touch, but it wasn’t very subtle at all. Garrett Ryan (Young Josh) and Ty Simpkins (Dalton) were fairly decent actors considering how young they are. They portrayed the story line very well and the two boys are quite talented. Tyler Griffin (Young Parker) was a hauntingly good actor, he brought a chill down the spines of the viewers as he enacted his scenes. It seemed effortless to the young child. One point I would like to make is, that the writers/directors/producers should’ve added to the film was the back story of Parker and his mother. It leaves so many questions open. What happened to his father? Did he or his mother kill his father? Why does the Mother want Parker to be different?

It really bugs me when questions will not be answered. I say will “not” for a very good reason, which you will find out when you watch the movie, and you will probably feel the same way I do. I would recommend seeing ‘Insidious Chapter 2’ with its jumpy elements and chilling scenes, I believe it’s the perfect film for a Halloween fright fest with friends! We would to thank Patrice O ‘ Toole for sending us her view of “Insidious Chapter 2”. If you have been to the cinema recently and would like to win 2 tickets to a movie please feel free to send us your thoughts. We will print what we feel is the best version and give the winner 2 complimentary tickets. Email tallaguide@gmail.com

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST NI OPERA & WIDE OPEN OPERA TEAM UP TO MAKE IRISH OPERA HISTORY WITH THE FIRST EVER TOUR OF GERALD BARRY’S HILARIOUS OPERA THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST BASED ON OSCAR WILDE’S PLAY NI Opera and Wide Open Opera are proud to present the Irish premiere and tour of Gerald Barry’s riotous new opera The Importance Of Being Earnest at the Millennium Forum, Derry (as part of the City of Culture celebrations) touring to the Grand Opera House, Belfast, Cork Opera House and The Gaiety Theatre, Dublin from October 26 – November 9. Based on Oscar Wilde’s farcical comedy about sex and deceit, the opera has already been a huge hit in Los Angeles, Nancy and London. This hilarious work was first performed in Los Angeles in 2011 at the L.A. Philharmonic and subsequently at the Lindbury Studio Theatre at the Royal Opera House, London last year (2012). The Financial Times called it “A unique piece of music theatre that would surely have had Wilde smiling at its pure outrageousness”, while The Independent (UK) called it “a manic, renegade thrill...the most confident, volatile comic opera for a decade”, whilst The Guardian praised the score’s “sheer uninhibited exuberance”. Featuring orchestral parts for pistols, a duet sung through megaphones and a climax of plate smashing, this is no ordinary opera! It is, however, a hilarious and astonishing contemporary work that perfectly captures the spirit of one of

Ireland’s best-loved playwrights and Ireland’s greatest living composer. Wide Open Opera’s Artistic Director Fergus Sheil said: “Only somebody as crazy and foolhardy as Gerald Barry would attempt to match Oscar Wilde’s perfection and wit in The Importance of Being Earnest. Only Gerald Barry’s genius could possibly have brought it off – not only measuring up to Wilde’s flawless precision, but adding unimagined contemporary dimensions to this much-loved work. Opera audiences throughout Ireland are in for an amazing treat with this hysterical score in a dazzling new production. This brand new co-production from NI Opera and Wide Open Opera features a fantastic international cast led by Belfast-born Aoife Miskelly. Directed and designed by awardwinning Antony McDonald, with Pierre-André Valade conducting Ireland’s Crash Ensemble, this is a unique chance to see the first Irish performances of an opera destined to become a modern classic. What the world papers say: “Hysterically funny” – Los Angeles Times “A unique piece of music theatre that would surely have had Wilde smiling at its pure outrageousness” – Financial Times [UK]

Tallaghts New Edition – Fit4Less Gym By Katie Devereux In this day and age, people are paying more attention to their health and well being. Society has influenced more people to take pride in their appearance and their fitness levels, so I thought interviewing a member of staff at Tallaght’s newest gym, Fit4Less. Co-owner Greg Kenny agreed to sit down with me and explain to me what exactly Fit4Less has to offer to the locals. “Fit4less is a low cost gym with a high class service, we pride ourselves on delivering top quality equipment at a low cost price, we don’t believe members should pay for facility’s they don’t use such as swimming pools, steam rooms and saunas. In the low cost gym market there can be a lack of service we do not accept that cliché and push ourselves on a daily basis to help every customer.

We have found our members and general people we have encountered were delighted to have affordable fitness in the area. Most of our members are very surprised by the size and quality of the gym for the price that we offer, which is €24.99 monthly membership. We have a wide variety of classes including spinning, TRX, and kettlebell to name a few, we also have a new studio on the way which will include some very exiting classes including Zumba, Kangoo Jumps and Pilates We have found we are getting a lot of new people to use the gym because of the price

point, we have also taken the elitism out of gym and we welcome everybody from beginners to advanced, a high percentage of our members are absolute beginners, At Fit4less we have very friendly and caring staff that love to help people get fit and change there lifestyle” The gym sounded so appealing, which I found surprising as I’m the type of person that would much rather pig out on the sofa with loads of junk food while I’m watching the soaps, but it made me think, if my mind was

changed so easily, how many other peoples minds were changed too? Did this mean that their gym was packed all the time and you had to face a waiting time before being able to use their equipment? “We are currently operating at half capacity, once we hit full capacity we will close memberships or expand into another area. At present we are running a class timetable that will remove people off the gym floor at peak times, this frees up the equipment for anybody that doesn’t want classes. We also give well rounded advice on programs that doesn’t leave anybody on the one machine for more that 15 minutes, this way the members rotate very quickly. We would like the gym to be recognised as the best value fitness facility in Tallaght, we stride to continue getting the people of Tallaght to join Fit4Less. We are planning on opening an aerobics studio which will facilitate all classes, this will be non intrusive to current members as all expansion will be behind the scenes of the club, We are very exited to offer the people of Tallaght such a wonderful facility as such a low cost price.” If your interested in joining the wonderful establishment that is Fit4Less you can drop in to the gym, located in Belgard Square or you can call them on (01)5517242

By Katie Devereux I spoke to the manager of The Metro, Kevin O’Shea, to see what his bar has to offer to the Tallaght community.

private smoking area private toilets

“Last summer we split the metro into two sections so we have the bar, where at the moment we do pints for €3.80 for regulars and then we have the other side for the kind of 18 and up year olds with a live DJ. On Mondays and Tuesdays we have an open mic night where people play their own instruments or sing a few songs so we’re hoping that will bring in more customers. Then on Wednesday to Sunday we have a live DJ that usually starts about 8 or 9 o clock till close. We are generally fairly strict on the door which I think is what keeps us apart from all the other clubs around. We haven’t had any trouble on the premises in about 6 months and I think that contributes to us keeping the same customers because they feel safe when they’re here. Our staff have been here for so long that they recognise the trouble makers, they don’t let them into the bar, and it ensures that everyone inside is having a good time. Our drink promotions are still the cheapest in Tallaght. We charge €3.50 for bottles, shots and spirits and pints are €4. We do that from Sunday to Friday until about 8 or 9 o clock and then on Saturdays, drinks are the average price that they are in any other pub. We’re starting an X Factor special soon that will be between 7 and 9 o clock where you can buy a cocktail and get one free, or buy a glass of wine and get one free. It’s to counter act the amount of people that are buying a bottle of wine and staying at home to drink it. We’ve noticed it in the last week or two and we would rather have bums on the chairs here.” The Metro Bar and Café has a friendly atmosphere, there is always service with a smile and I think it should be you venue of choice this weekend.

The Burning QuestionDo People With Visible Piercings and Tattoos Find it Difficult to Get a Job or Has Society Become More Accepting? By Katie Devereux I took to the streets of Tallaght and here is what your locals had to say… Martin, 31 – I think there is still some stigma attached to people who have a lot of tattoos and piercings but I don’t think its right to judge a persons working abilities based solely on what they have decided to do with their own bodies. None of my employees have any visable tattoos or piercings but I wouldn’t think twice about hiring someone that did, it doesn’t affect their work. David, 24 - It’s a personal choice and I

don’t see why people feel its ok to discriminate against a person for their self expression. But in saying that I think it does depend on where you want to work, for instance, if you wanted to be a nurse or a doctor it would look a bit unprofessional if you had lots of facial piercings.

disgusting! Sinead, 20 – I really do think it looks unprofessional. Fair enough if you’re young and in school and you want to get things like that done but I think you should only get meaningful tattoos in hidden places, people care too much about being flashy and showing off now.

Noreen, 43 – I don’t think people with visible piercings and tattoos should work in jobs that deal with the public, it just looks like you have a bad attitude. I wouldn’t feel comfortable being served in a shop or a restaurant by someone with loads of metal sticking out of their face or ink sprawled all over their neck. I think it looks

Andre, 20 – I’ve been getting piercings since I was about 15 or 16 and at one stage I had 17 piercings. It was near impossible to find a job but I was offered one on the condition that I removed my piercings. I did it and then I was refused the job which I thought was really unfair! I didn’t put all the piercings back in but

I now work in a small café in town and the manager really doesn’t care what his staff looks like, he believes we are giving people a service and that’s that! Phil, 56 – I like tattoos on the younger generation; I think it shows their freedom that I didn’t necessarily have when I was younger. I think it should be easy for them to get jobs because the tattoos and piercings make them look interesting and don’t we all need something like that to brighten up our dark days. Tattoos for all I say!!

The Stoney Brokes In tallaguide we will continue to expose already well established and also new bands who are starting off. The Stoney Brokes are one who need very little introduction. They have been gigging the Tallaght circuit, expanded into Dublin City Centre and now ventures all over Ireland and London.

Spotify, Soundcloud and countless other online sources. The Stoney Brokes have also been working hard on their debut album which will be released in November. They have a rock/pop/ grungy and swinging sound, led by powerful lead vocalist Amy Kelly who hits tremendous

notes effortlessly over the backing of a grungy rock back sound featuring Dan McKenna (Guitar) Ciaran Redmond (Lead Guitar) David Penny (Bass) and Oliver Jordan Kelly crashing down on the drums. Their sounds can be compared to the likes of The Black Keys, Foo Fighters and No Doubt. Catch the Stoney Brokes in all major Dublin venues and Knockanstockan 2013. We would like to thank David Penny for his brief account.

The Stoney Brokes first made their mark in the NOISE battle of the bands 2010 when they went on to win and were rewarded with recording time in Rua Red and €1000. Big things continue to happen as they work vigorously and gain further awareness in the Irish music scene. They have released their first Irish single ‘Counting the days’ which is available to download off iTunes, Amazon,

If you are an up and coming band or solo artist and would like some welcome exposure please feel free to contact Katie anytime on 014519708.

hat do you think about Tallaght and it’s music scene? Since the closure of Captain Americas it must be tough for a new band to get recognized locally? I think Tallaght’s music scene is very strong at the minute, there are lots of very talented bands and singers who are from and gig around Tallaght. I am lucky enough to know a lot of them personally, people like Ray Scully and Sandi Jane who gig tirelessly and work very hard in the current tough climate for musicians. Bands like Bipolar Empire, Just No and Leaders of Men all represent Tallaght very well each with their own distinctive sounds. My own Band 48:Hours were lucky enough to gig with Bipolar Empire recently on the main stage of the Academy at the Block C Festival which was a great showcase for all up and coming Irish talent not just Tallaght. As far as gigging locally goes it is getting tougher, our band 48:Hours had our first headline gig in Captain Americas Tallaght and gigged there most friday’s until it closed down, it was a big loss as they are great for showcasing up and coming Tallaght talent. I do think there are opportunities in Tallaght though with places like The Metro, Abberlay, Grumpies, Mortons, The Old MIll etc all showcasing local music live.

W

hy have you chosen a path in music?

I have been studying Drama since I was young and recently enough achieved Grade 8 so its all being a passion and now I study Drama in UCD and along side music Its all I really do. Musical Theatre was my first experience of singing I was lucky enough in school to play Genie in Aladdin and Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera and I wanted to start singing other stuff not just musical theatre and thats when the gigging began, at the start of this year after a confidence boosting appearance on the Voice of Ireland I decided I would love to be part of a band and that’s how 48:Hours really came to be. The idea of doing something I love with mates just seemed even more perfect, after the experience of the show I really wanted to be in a band and have a real go at music luckily my best mate Clive just happened to also be an amazing drummer and was straight on board, he had been in Pheonix youth band for years and was eager to get playing a full kit. I then text Gav(Rhythm Guitar and Backing Vocals and also a former member of Pheonix Youth band), Liam (lead guitarist) used to be in a band with Gav and he got him involved as well as our bassist Dean who are both masters of their respective instruments. The band was formed on a Wednesday night and by Friday we had a headline gig in Captain Americas Tallaght. We hadn’t decided on a name by the gig and then 48 Hours was suggested because its how long

we were a band getting our first headliner and we all loved the name and it stuck.

D

oes Tallaght provide much support for music?

Tallaght does provide a good support for music there are many different places like I mentioned previously that provide stages for bands and singers to get themselves out there. There are many Youth Programs and local ways of getting involved in music. I know Rua Red provide space for rehearsals and even recording of music. There are two major marching bands in Tallaght with a great history of producing amazing talents at their respective instruments. Also a major support to our own band and also a lot of Tallaght talent has been Cian Donohoe’s Block C Studio which is a fantastic recording studio in Ballymount. His studio provides bands a chance to get there music out there via his youtube channel which has hundreds of thousands of views our own Block C Session of Give me Love won us our chance to play the Block C Festival which is another example of how unsigned talent are being given a chance to showcase themselves. Cian has had the likes of Bipolar Empire, Just No, Sandi Jane, Ray Scully, Shanners and many other talented Tallaght musicians in his studio(he has also had The Coronas in for live session).

M

any great acts have come from Tallaght, is there anything you will do differently to make an impact on the irish music scene? I am not sure of what our band will do differently to make an impact on the Irish music scene. But I think honesty is a big thing for us, we don’t focus heavily on image but more on what we play and we try to keep it all relatable. On stage I generally speak very honestly between our songs and try to have collective banter and a few laughs with whoever has come to see us. I think we always try to be inventive when writing songs and keep developing our sound as a band. Our main aim is to make people happy through our music cause music is what makes all of us happy. I think we have a quite different sound to most other Tallaght bands and we like to get the audience involved in our shows so I suppose that is something we want to push on with it and hopefully helps us make an impact. https://www.facebook. com/48Hoursofficial We would like to thank Gary and wish 48 hours lots of success in their careers and we will follow them as they go along.

Crowe welcomes Energy price freeze by Electric Ireland

17

Dublin South West representative Seán Crowe TD has welcomed the move by Electric Ireland to freeze its prices until January 2014 but warned that more needs to be done by other companies and the government to tackle fuel poverty. Crowe said that the frightening statistics released this week by St Vincent de Paul showed that annual domestic energy bills have risen by €500 and cried out for a proactive measures by government. Deputy Seán Crowe said: “Fuel poverty is an issue that this government needs to take seriously and proactive measures need to be introduced to reduce fuel bills. The frightening statistics released this week by St Vincent de Paul showed that annual domestic energy bills have risen by €500 and cries out for a government response that will bring some relief for vulnerable members of society. “Many people, especially those most marginalised in society are putting their health and safety at risk by attempting to reduce their energy bills. “As we approach the winter months an awful lot of households will have to make difficult

decisions whether to prioritise heat or other basic necessities. “We know that fuel poverty impacts disproportionately against the elderly, the sick and those with disabilities as they are more likely to be housebound and more susceptible to the cold. “The government needs to have a frank discussion with energy companies to try and ensure that people do not suffer the harshest and bitterest of the winter weather. “There also needs to be a thorough debate followed by action on energy production and supply in Ireland and how best to utilise our renewable energy sources and offshore oil and gas to benefit Irish households. “The decision by Electric Ireland to freeze its prices until January is a positive step and needs to be replicated with similar measures by other companies and government in the weeks and months ahead.”

Talk to Tina Tallaght Express’ very own agony aunt is here to help you. No problem too big, no problem too small, Tina is here to give you the advice you need and steer you in the right direction. Don’t worry, it’s completely confidential, just send in your problem to tinatallaghtexpress@gmail.com

Dear Tina, I think my boyfriend is cheating on me, but I don’t have any proof. Should I confront him and just hope I’m right, or wait around until I actually have proof? I’m afraid if he isn’t, we’ll just break up but I don’t want to wait around like a fool to find out… Please help! Anon, Killanarden. Hi, Anon. Well from what I gather from your query you certainly don’t feel at ease in the relationship and that’s never a good sign. I wouldn’t advise confronting him directly with no proof as he could get cagey regardless of whether he is cheating or not, it’s a basic human reaction when being accused of something. As communication is key in successful relationships, I suggest sitting down with your boyfriend in a calm environment, explaining to him what you’re feeling and being very careful to make sure he doesn’t feel accused of anything. Tell him that your having these worries and that you would much prefer to be told the truth in order to keep your dignity. If he confesses then you know what your next

step is, but if it becomes apparent that he has not been cheating then you need to build the trust levels in the relationship. Approach it with a level head, and realise, if things have become strained he may have some concerns that he needs to talk about too! Hope this has helped, Tina. Dear Tina, I have been friends with this girl for 8 years and I have fallen in love with her but even though she has told me that she feels the same way, she will not start a relationship with me as she is afraid that the friendship will deteriorate… I really want to be with this girl, what should I do? Anon, Tallaght. Hi, Anon. You could try talk to her, explain that if this is the way you are both feeling, isn’t it worth taking the risk! She may be apprehensive at first but if this is truly what she wants, she will not let you slip away. Some of the best relationships have come from people being good friends first, I myself was best friends with my other half for a long time, and now we’ve been together 4 years. Let her know that she is safe with you, that you will love and respect her and be there for her when she needs it. If she does make the decision to start a relationship with you, make sure you don’t let her regret it, but if she still is against the idea of you two dating, then I’m afraid you have to respect her wishes. Hope this has helped, Tina. Dear Tina, My mother and I have not been getting along for some time now! I have recently started going to college and she doesn’t understand that I

www.tallaghtexpress.com

need my own freedom and independence to do what I want with my friends. I just want to have a great social life and she’s always nagging me telling me to stay at home, get some assignments done and that she doesn’t want me clubbing al the time. I’m a student, this is what students do!! How can I get her to stop irritating me while I’m trying to live my life?! Anon, Firhouse. Hi, Anon. I understand how enticing the student life can be, between meeting new people, gaining new experiences and having a chance to let your hair down, but you need to understand that your mother isn’t doing what she is doing solely to irritate you. It is her life long job to ensure that you are healthy, happy, and most of all safe! Now, I’m not sure if you still live with your mother, but if you do maybe offer to help around the house, make her a surprise cup of tea/ coffee, or pick one or two nights a week that you will dedicate to college work. Let her see that even though you are living the wild college life, you can still be sensible and make mature decisions. It could be difficult for her to accept that her baby is all grown up and she might be a bit upset because she misses you so I advise spending some time together, as long as she knows that her child is working to the best of their abilities at the same time as having fun with family and friends, she should be fine. She only say those thing because she loves you, show her that you love her too because it will make her day! Hope this has helped, Tina.

RABBITTE GETS GREEN LIGHT FROM CABINET FOR “NEXT GENERATION POSTCODE” SYSTEM BY 2015 · Easy to remember seven character code to be allocated to every home in the country · New codes will help emergency, postal, and other service providers (including on line services) to locate all households · Consortium headed by Capita Ireland to develop, implement, and operate new postcode system

The Minister for Communications, Pat Rabbitte has won agreement from the Cabinet for the rollout of a new national postcode system that will provide a unique seven character code to every letter-box in the State by 2015.

whereby more than 30% of all domestic addresses are not unique. It will mean that individual apartments and offices in large developments will each have an individual code as long as specific post-boxes are provided.

Under the new system, Ireland will be the first country in the world to have a public database of unique identifiers for all properties that will assist citizens, public bodies and businesses to locate every individual household in the State.

The Postcode will be a 7 character code in the format A65 B2CD, with the first three characters relating to a general area or postal district in which the address is located. In Dublin, existing postal districts will appear as the first three characters of the new postcode.

This will alleviate the current situation

The new system, which will be operational in Spring 2015, will bring Ireland in line with other European countries whereby postcode systems have been the norm for many decades. Minister Rabbitte commented, “I am very pleased to announce that Ireland will at last have a publicallyowned national postcode system. Most countries have had the benefit of such systems since the mid 1900’s. I am very glad to announce that in making the move now we have been able to use the

technology and systems available today to move to a next generation system. The Irish code will be the first in the world to be unique to each individual address. “There are many benefits, for example, given the prevalence of satellite navigation systems in cars, a driver will simply be able to insert a postcode into their device, rather than a lengthy address and will be provided with the accurate location. Similarly this will greatly benefit emergency services such as ambulance drivers to locate destinations for call-outs, which in some instances are life and death situations.” “Householders will be informed of their postcode in early 2015 and will be able to use it from then on. In the meantime the groundwork designing the code and updating private and public sector databases to accommodate the new postcode system will be undertaken. “I will be announcing further details of the new system subject to contract shortly.” The Government has also approved, subject to contract, the appointment of a consortium headed by Capita Ireland as the company which will develop, roll-out and operate the Postcode System. This announcement follows a procurement process run by Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources. The Capita consortium is expected to operate the postcode under license for an initial ten year period extendable at the discretion of the Minister for Communications by a further five years.

10 tips for buying a house

1. Don’t buy if you can’t stay put. If you can’t commit to remaining in one place for at least a few years, then owning is probably not for you, at least not yet. With the transaction costs of buying and selling a home, you may end up losing money if you sell any sooner - even in a rising market. When prices are falling, it’s an even worse proposition. 2. Start by shoring up your credit. Since you most likely will need to get a mortgage to buy a house, you must make sure your credit history is as clean as possible. A few months before you start house hunting, go through all your finances and make sure the facts are correct, and fix any problems you discover. 3. Aim for a home you can really afford. Make enquiries into percentage over and above your annual salary that your allowed to borrow. But you’ll do better to use one of many calculators available online to get a better handle on how your income, debts, and expenses affect what you can afford. 4. How much deposit do you need? There are a variety of public and private lenders who, if you qualify, offer low-interest mortgages that require a small down payment. 5. Buy in a district with good schools. In most areas, this advice applies even if you don’t have school-age children. Reason: When it comes time to sell, you’ll learn that strong school districts are a top priority for many home buyers, thus helping to boost property values. 6. Get professional help. Even though the Internet gives buyers unprecedented access to home listings, most new buyers (and many more experienced ones) are better off using a professional agent. Look for an estate agent, if possible, who will have your interests at heart and can help you with strategies during the bidding process. 7. Check your rates and repayments. When picking a mortgage, make sure you know your repayments and all your terms and conditions. The lower interest rate will save you more in the long run. 8. Before house hunting, get pre-approved. Getting pre-approved will save you the grief of looking at houses you can’t afford and put you in a better position to make a serious offer when you do find the right house. Not to be confused with pre-qualification, which is based on a cursory review of your finances, preapproval from a lender is based on your actual income, debt and credit history.

€230,000

9. Do your homework before bidding. Your opening bid should be based on the sales trend of similar homes in the neighborhood. So before making it, consider sales of similar homes in the last three months. If homes have recently sold at 5 percent less than the asking price, you should make a bid that’s about eight to 10 percent lower than what the seller is asking. 10. Hire a surveyor. Sure, your lender will require a home appraisal anyway. But that’s just the bank’s way of determining whether the house is worth the price you’ve agreed to pay. Separately, you should hire your own home surveyor, preferably an engineer with experience in doing home surveys in the area where you are buying. His or her job will be to point out potential problems that could require costly repairs down the road.

STRIKING A DIFFERENT NOTE NEW FIAT 500S LAUNCHED IN IRELAND

The FIAT 500 family continues to grow. Taking its places alongside the successful 500 and 500C, and the recently-launched 500L and 500L Trekking, the new FIAT 500S brings an Abarth-inspired look and feel to the range, thereby broadening its even further. Inspired by the hugely successful “Sporting” models of the past and the more recent “by Abarth” edition of the 500, the new FIAT 500S is aimed at enthusiasts who want the affordability and low running costs of the FIAT 500 in a more eye-catching and dynamic package.

Nissan introduces the all new Nissan NOTE. Small car price, Big car design, space, technology and specification. There’s a lot in store for Nissan in the way of new products over the coming months. The next 18 months alone will see the introduction of 6 new mainstream products for the car company – including a re-generated Micra, a brand new Note, New Qashqai, X-Trail and an eagerly anticipated C-Segment hatchback. The first of this avalanche of new models is the new Nissan Note which will reach our shores later on this year in October. A bold new design, exceptional practicality and interior space and unrivalled value for money will move the new Note up a gear in terms of its appeal in the small family car market. Starting from less than €16,000 and packed full of equipment, the new Note is aggressively primed to go head to head and compete directly with the more traditional “players” in the B-Segment such as Fiesta, Yaris, Polo and Clio. In addition, seamlessly connecting design and technology, the new Note brings a number of innovative

premium features to the small car market for the first time. From the Nissan Safety Shield – which links three safety systems (Blind Spot Warning, Lane Departure Warning and Moving Object Detection) to create a comprehensive protection and driver assistance package – to the advanced Around View Monitor which gives a 360 bird’s eye view when parking, the new Note sets the benchmark for accessible premium technology. The new Note will be available in 3 separate grades; XE, SV and SVE. The XE will come with 6 Airbags, Cruise Control, Central Locking, 15” Steel Wheels, Electric Front Windows and Door Mirrors, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, Ecometer and Start/Stop System, all as standard. The SV will add Manual A/C, CD Player, Bluetooth, USB Port, 16” Alloys, Electric Rear Windows, Heated Door Mirrors, and Steering Wheel Mounted Audio Controls. The SVE further adds Auto A/C, Nissan Connect, Nissan Safety Shield, Around View Monitor (AVM), Intelligent Key, Family Pack, Front Fog Lamps, Semi Leather Trim, Automatic Headlamps and Wipers. The new Note will be available in three engine types. Firstly, the 3 cylinder 1.2 Litre Petrol is equipped with 80 HP, 108 NM Torque, and emissions of 109 g/km (Tax Band A3; €190). Up next, the 1.2 Litre DIG-S Petrol combines 95 HP with 142 NM of Torque and emissions of just 99 g/km (Tax Band A2; €180). Finally, the 4 cylinder 1.5 Litre dCi comes with 90 HP, 220 NM of Torque and emissions of just 95 g/km (Band A2; €180). The new Nissan Note will be for sale at Nissan dealerships from October 2013.

Distinguishing the FIAT 500S from the rest of the range are bespoke front and rear bumpers; new side skirts; a boot lid-mounted rear spoiler; dark chrome detailing; a chrome exhaust; rear privacy glass and new 15-inch (and optional 16-inch) alloy wheels. A range of eight body colours have been chosen to complete the FIAT 500S exterior look at launch, with a Matt Black version tothe range shortly. Inside, the FIAT 500S is enhanced with new sports seats, a flat-bottomed Abarth-design steering wheel, as well as a new gear knob and gaiter, all with unique red detailing (including a special logo in the seats). A matte silver dashboard panel rounds out the interior revisions. The FIAT 500S engine range consists of the 69hp 1.2-litre petrol and the 85hp TwinAir Turbo petrol and both are equipped with air conditioning (climate control on the TwinAir version), Blue & Me connectivity, seven airbags, fuel-saving Start&Stop, electric windows and mirrors and remote central locking as standard. The FIAT 500S 1.2 is priced at €15,195 and has CO2 emissions of just 113g/km, putting into VRT band A4. The FIAT 500S TwinAir Turbo is priced at €16,495 and with CO2 emissions of just 92g/km it falls into VRT band A2. As with the entire FIAT reange, both versions of the 500S come with a five-year warranty as standard and are on sale in Ireland now.

Rising Star Sutcliffe Jnr to fight in Drimnagh Dublin fights fans will again be provided the opportunity to witness professional boxing as KO Entertainment announce their Suburban Battleground fight-night which will take place on the 2nd of November, 2013 at Our Lady’s Hall, Mourne road, Drimnagh. The event will be headed by rising star Philip Sutcliffe Jnr who will fight for the Irish light welterweight title against two times World Military Champion Michael Kelly. Former amateur star Sutcliffe has grabbed the attention of the Irish boxing public with a trio of stoppage wins in his first three professional fights and his clash against the vastly more experienced Michael Kelly promises to be an explosive encounter. The 24 year old son of former two times Olympian and double European bronze medalist Philip Sutcliffe Snr is excited about returning to his home community to fight as a professional. “It’s amazing to be fighting in the area where I grew up and went to school; plus to be fighting for the Irish title makes it that bit more special. Everyone is really excited about the show. I’m really looking forward to the atmosphere on the night and putting in a good performance” A community venue holding a professional boxing show is a first for South Dublin and Sutcliffe’s manager Stephen Sharpe believes it’s a great opportunity for locals to witness first hand the country’s next superstar. “We are delighted to put Philip on a show in Drimnagh and it’s great that so many Dubliners will get to see just how good Sutcliffe Jnr is. Just last week former world champion Barry McGuigan told the media he believes Philip will be a star and for this journey to pit-stop right in the heart of his community is amazing”. So far five fights have been confirmed for the show with the clash of Tallaght favorite Robbie Long and former Prizefighter contestant Darren

Cruise promising to be a barnstorming support bout to the main event. Also appearing on the card will be Luke Keeler, former Irish amateur champion Carl Brabazon and Ballyhaunis youngster Ryan Peake who will become Irelands youngest professional at the age of eighteen. Tickets for the Suburban Battleground fightnight are priced at €30 unreserved and €50 ringside and are available from Stephen Sharpe 0852483929, Philip Sutcliffe 0879719193 or can be purchased from Crumlin Boxing Club.

An Insight into Tallaghts Cage Queen - M Dotsy O’L eagan

oughlin

By Katie Devereux Q. You’ve won 2 Leinster senior football medals, why did you decide to go back to hurling?

A. I suppose when I was younger the hurling setup wasn’t as appealing as it is now. It was only kind of starting to get its act together, and I suppose I was young and I was attracted to the opportunity of going to play the football. But I suppose I always had a passion for hurling, and whether I knew it or not I always had the intention of playing hurling, and as well, looking at the underage teams winning Leinster minors and under 21 titles it kind of made me feel that there would be a break through for the senior team too and that was something I wanted to be a part of.

By Katie Devereux things yourself, improving your skills, improving your weaker foot. Just basically dedicating yourself to it. Q. You’ve thrilled people over the past few years. What are your best and worst memories? A. Worst memoires maybe last year because we had a lot of lows and we went out very tamely to Kilkenny in the championships, we just had a really bad day. Then the next day we went to the qualifiers in Clare and we just didn’t deliver. We didn’t turn out and we were all at a low because of it. David, it has been a pleasure talking to you! Dotsy O’Callaghan

Q.When you were a child, did you ever dream of representing your county? A. Ah yeah, just the same as any other young lad I was fairly into the GAA, my parents would have taken me to matches in Croke Park and I would have been glued to the game, it was always something I wanted to do, something I wanted to be involved in. Q. What is it like playing in front of 80,000 people and a huge television audience? A. Maybe when I was younger it would have gotten to me a little bit, I would have been a bit nervous. But you do get caught up in the atmosphere… This year we played Cork in the semi finals and I have genuinely never played in an atmosphere like that for the hurling, it was phenomenal. We marched around with the band before the game and the whole crowd was up on their feet, it was electric. If I was younger it might have put me off a little bit but it was a really enjoyable experience. Q. Dublin hurling has come on in leaps and bounds in the past few years. Can you think of a turning point? A. I wouldn’t be able to think of any particular turning point. A lot of people put in a lot of work, helping out with the underage Dublin teams over the years and the county board put a lot of work into the underage development squads. Then we had Anthony Daly come in and he was a great figure head there, he’s somebody for all the players to look up to . I suppose over the last couple of year we’ve taken mini steps and anything that we’ve won have all been signs of progress. Q. St. Marks is your club, what advice would you give to any upcoming talent or young people aspiring to play. I suppose, if you’re that interested in it then it’s just a case of how much effort you’re willing to put in and how much you’re going to practice and work on

The real Dotsy BOXES AS FACTS By Katie Devereux How would you describe yourself in 3 words? Shy, highly intelligent (laughs) and maybe ambitious! If you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpowers to be? I think I’d be Spiderman… Looks like great fun web slinging around town. If you could trade places with any famous person, dead or alive, who would it be and why? That’s a tough one, I think I’d prefer to stay in my own body and have no out of body experiences. (Laughs) What is your favourite thing to do in your spare time? I’d have to say going for long drives. Especially in the middle of the season, driving around and listening to your music is a great way to clear the head. Who is your favourite sporting hero and why? I think it would have to be DJ Carey. I’ve never experienced such exciting energy before from any other player. If you were watching the highlights of your life on a big screen, is there anything you would change? I’d like to think I would be watching the highlights and Frank Sinatra ‘I Did It My Way’ would be playing in the background! (Laughs)

Rumble in Rush 9 took place in St. Maurs GAA club in Rush last Saturday the 5th of October and it featured Tallaghts own Meagan O’ Loughlin. I caught up with Meagan about her journey into cage fighting and MMA. Q. How did you become interested in cage fighting? A. I originally became interested in cage fighting and MMA and UFC because of my older brother. As kids we did Kempo which just teaches you the forms and then I used to do a week here and there in kick boxing but never properly committed to anything. My brother then went to do MMA in Spartan up in Belgard with Colm O’ Reilly which was one of the lads that owed one of the first MMA gyms around Tallaght. I remember thinking it was kind of cool and I was copying him a little and went to one or two training sessions there. Then I went off to college and I got really interested in MMA. Q. Is there a really strict diet that you have to stick to? A. The diets aren’t that strict, you just have to mate a certain weight. There’s so many different ways to do it, this was my first fight camp so my coach told me exactly what to do and it ended up being perfect. The diets depend on what it is you want to do, if you want to loose weight you cut out carbohydrates completely, but if you just want to tone up, which is what I did, then you eat a lot of meat, fruit and vegetables and I was on protein shakes too. Your not really allowed anything sugary so no cans of coke for me! When you’re in fight camps though, you definitely have to stay away from smoking and drinking and stuff like that, but that wasn’t difficult at all. Q. Tell me a bit about your club? A. Well it’s based in Mulhuddart up by Blanchardstown its called Coolmine Mixed Martial Arts. We have three coaches there, there’s Dean, he’s our striking coach, Luke is our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Coach and Debbie is our fitness coach and our ‘making sure everyone keeps a cool head’ coach (Laughs) We’ve a great team out there, we’re not like a lot of other clubs, we don’t have any beginners really, everyone there is a serious fighter, but it’s a really great club to be a part of. Q. How different is the sport for men and women? A. It’s fairly different, there’s not an awful lot of women at all that do it. The weight restrictions are different for women then they are for men. Women have allowances with their weight because you have to take in account the bikinis or swimsuits they wear under their fighting gear whereas men don’t get allowances for stuff like that. Men would also have a lot more fights to go through before getting to UFC, I’ll only have to do about 8 fights and I’m basically there, but men would have to be brilliant, keep winning, they have to have about 20 fights under their belt, about 10 amateur fights and have to win loads of different titles.

Q. What is training like? Is it really different to actually being in a fight? A. The training is difficult. I train 5 days a week which is kind of tiring because I’ll be working all day then I’ll go do three hours of training. If I have a day off work I’ll do morning and evening training on those days. I don’t know how to describe the actual fighting, your adrenaline builds you up so if you do get hit you don’t really feel it. It’s different when sparring with someone in the gym because you won’t go your full force in training, you’d probably go about 80% and that’s a really hard spar against each other, but when your fighting, it’s full force, the person against you wants to win and they want to kill you (to use the term loosely.) In the first round of my fight I just had to get a feel for what kind of fighter she was and I listened to everything my coach said to me really well, but after the first round he told me to just let go, give it my all and stop holding back but I couldn’t properly because the fight didn’t last the full three rounds. It was a technical knock out in my favour because I did some damage to her nose. I’m not too sure when my next fight will be, but I’m really looking forward to it! Q.Would you ever consider opening your own gym and being a trainer? A.The thing is, with this sport you just kind of fall into it. If you’re committed to this sport, if your serious about it you’ll never leave it. You find a love for it and it just becomes a part of your life then. The more I’m getting into it, the more I want to fight, the more I say to my boyfriend ‘Babe I’m not going out tonight, I’m staying at home to watch UFC’ My passion for it has grown. Yeah I would love to coach and train people but I want to focus on the fighting for a while before I go down that path at all! Thanks for chatting with me Meagan; I’ll make sure to be in touch after your next fight!
