Speaking about how Taleem can change the face of the nation, Piyush Goyal added: “I have studied the Quran and nowhere did I find anything objectionable in it. If all the communities in the country live in harmony and support each other in times of happiness and grief, then no force will ever be able to stop us from progressing as a prosperous, strong, independent and healthy society.”

“The biggest contribution of the banking sector will be if it can help the youth in getting empowered with education and skill development. When the banks opened a record number of accounts under the Jan Dhan Yojana, reaching out to all, the caste, community, religion or financial status of the people opening the accounts did not matter at all. Banks today have a huge social role to play,” Piyush Goyal added.

“Similarly, all of us here have just one dream, and that is to ensure the education of every single person in the country, irrespective of anything else so that he or she can become a useful member of the society who contributes to the nation,” the Minister said.

Citing the examples of some very welleducated and prosperous communities, Moulana Dr Kalbe Sadiq said that the message was loud and clear. “We have to educate every single person in the country and this is the only way.”

Explaining the role the banking sector can play in national development, Arun Tewari stressed that education and life in general was only complete when Financial Education was imbibed by the population, because it had a huge resultant national development.

Rattan Lal Hangloo said all religions stressed on the power of education or Taleem ki Taquat if one wanted to change one’s destiny, therefore making it indispensable for each and every one in all parts of the country to be educated.

The technocrat who gave up lucrative job offers to spread education to the remote parts of North East, Mahbubul Hoque, said that he had been telling the world that in order to spread education and dispense knowledge, no elaborate infrastructure, but only the will to do so was required.

Moulana Shamshuddin Mohamed shared his experiences of the role that the mosques can play in upliftment and elevation of society.

Zafar Sareshwala appealed to the Muslim community and others to put an end to the feeling of being a minority and partake and contribute in the nation’s growth, which was only possible with Taleem ki Taquat.

Piyush Goyal added that “each one of us has a responsibility and we must spread the message from here, then nothing can stop India from becoming a true world leader and Guru, a place which it rightfully deserves.”

Only education, not useless traditions are the way forward

aulvis have not been helpful in the growth of the Muslim community. I have been very impressed with certain communities such as Jains and Jews who have taken the right steps at the right time to educate their community by creating the right number and kind of educational institutions. This has helped them in tremendous progress.

It is very necessary that we do away with useless traditions which act as impediments to the growth of our community and focus

on creating the right infrastructure required for the path of progress. The message is loud and clear that education is indispensable for the growth of any community. Those who do not have education will ultimately lose everything and those who possess education are sure to gain everything in terms of success. We have to educate our children. If the few educationists assembled here can produce such excellent results, imagine what will be the fruits of the hard work done by a population of 18 crore.

No fancy infrastructure, only will required to spread education

I

have travelled the world, guiding people on how an institution can be built. During my interaction with top educationists across the world, I have always stressed that in order to spread education and dispense knowledge, no fancy infrastructure is required. All you need is some place and few basic things. Will is the determining factor. People are willing to give money, but not time.

When we did not get the initial help required from outside to create the institution that we wanted to, we made our own efforts. Through hard work, we have been able to set up our own laboratory which is today being used by TCS. The philosophy and spirit behind Islam is study and education. Masjids can play prominent role in the spread of education

However, today, they are not being utilized in the right manner. During the recent Chennai floods, I gave a statement in the paper. After this 4000 masjids in Chennai were opened to serve as relief camps to flood-affected people, providing shelter to all, irrespective of religion.

Three years back, we started an IAS Academy at our Makka Masjid in Chennai. In the first batch itself, of 30 students, one student was selected in IAS and the others in IFA. Today we are also training non-Muslim stuShamshuddin Mohamed dents. We are training and educating 20 girls for Chief Imam of the Makka Masjid in the civil services examination.

Rudy said till the present government came to power, there were 24 different ministries doing skill development under 70-odd schemes. “There was no structure and no framework for skill development. The biggest challenge before my ministry is to bring convergence of all these schemes. For ‘Skill India’ mission to succeed we need active participation of the state governments. very achievement begins with desire and the ability to desire and dream only happens when a person gains education.

When it is the Vedas or the Quran, they all say that the end to all problems and the path to progress is through education.

We cannot change the world through arms and ammunitions but we can change it through our thoughts and ideas. And, in order to change the world, these ideas have to be protected and it is the responsibility of each and every one of us to do so.

If we want to change our lives and live with dignity, there is only one means and that is education. Whether it is boys or girls, education is a must. Today, economic empowerment is the flavor of the season and the central government is making all out efforts to push this development on the right track.

I would request the minister to ensure that our policy be uniform and multipronged and the other strategies have to be stratified if we want to take education a step forward from its present situation.

e are all aware of the importance and power of education but still more efforts have to be laid in the direction of empowerment with education. We have innumerable examples such as that of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkara and Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, where it was the burning desire to gain education, it was Taleem ki Taquat, which helped them write their destiny.

All of us are today proud of these people.

Similarly, if we have knowledge, then we will get the power to write our own destiny and once we gain that strength, we can help to strengthen society and the nation as a whole.

When I talk of education, I don’t mean just the education gained from schools, colleges and madrasas, I would like to focus on the knowledge which we call values or culture. We need these as much as we need formal education because life is meaningless without values or culture.

As a banker, we have certain responsibilities towards the society. It was only after the Jan Dhan Yojana when we opened more than 20 crore accounts that we realized the power which we have.

T

he City of Joy was nothing but full of joy as far as the fifth edition of Taleem ki Taquat was concerned. We had a full house at Science City and our local wellwishers were astonished at the turnout. “This is remarkable, bemisaal,” said one of them. Even our Chief Guest for the evening, the dapper Minister for Power and Coal, Piyush Goyal, looked delighted that the gargantuan Science City was a packed house waiting to hear him.

So, what is it in education that has seen such a remarkable transformation amongst our citizens to want to embrace it so wholeheartedly? It’s quite simply a yearning for a better life for their children, a brighter and prosperous future and, most important, the realisation, that the road to success— in fact, the only road to success—lies through Taleem.

What heartens me the most is those who now seek education as a means for a better life are those who will literally have to stretch every muscle to send their children to school. A colleague’s driver while we were in Kolkata kept talking to her about his dreams for his daughter and his desire to make sure she has a fine start in life with a sound schooling. And he is not alone.

It has now become some sort of a movement where education is at the core of every family’s agenda.

What this has done is to multiply the responsibility of those in public life and administration to expand and provide more schools, better infrastructure and greater facilities for our children. We have actually moved to changing the mindset, now there is a need to transform the assets on the ground.

We need to give hope to citizens across the country that Taleem ki Taquat is not just an agenda, it is a revolution on the ground.

The Three Incredible Girls from Sajoi

his is the extraordinary story of three young girls and their never-saydie spirit, which has changed the education scenario in a small village near Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. They faced apathy, taunts and humiliation in their battle against ignorance and deep conservatism.

Thanks to their efforts, 90 per cent of the children in their village attend school today.

Tabassum, Tarranum and Rubina are the three inspiring young girls who have changed the face of the little village of Sajoi near Varanasi for good. There was a time when no child in the village took education seriously, girls would drop out of school to help their mothers with daily chores, and the villagers just plain refused to see the necessity of education.

“In our village, nobody studied. We, the three of us, were the only ones who cleared school and went on to do Inter. Children would not even step out of the village. Our village had a basti so most of the children would start working at a young age and ignore their education,” says Tabassum.

In a village like Sajoi, where even earning a daily meal was a challenge, education was never a priority for families especially when it came to girls.

“But we managed to study. Thanks to our parents and their encouragement. They were so supportive,” she says.

These intrepid girls then decided to take matters in their own hands. They started going door to door to encourage students to go to school. They got in touch with the Human Welfare Association, an NGO in Varanasi, which trained these young girls to take on the challenge and provided them support.

The girls found a small public place where they started a school for kids who had never stepped out of home or had dropped out of school due to personal problems.

“It was very difficult initially. Students would just not show up. But we didn’t give

up. We would go to their houses every day and ask them to come to our school. And finally, after six months of our continuous efforts, students started showing up without us having to drag them from their homes,” she recalls.

In the first month they had 35 students.

But after a year they managed to get over 170 students to the school regularly. However, the battle was only half won as far as they were concerned. The biggest challenge was to bring in those girls who had dropped out of school altogether.

“As these girls were a little older, parents would not send them out. They didn’t want them to step out and thought going to school was a waste of time for them as they

could do other household work during that time of the day,” she says.

But the trio had a plan. They were not ready to let go of their dream of educating the girls in their village. They started a small tailoring training centre at the school so that the families would agree to let their daughters come for that.

“When the girls came to learn tailoring, we started teaching them simultaneously.

Many parents opposed us and asked why we were schooling them when they had been sent to learn tailoring. We would tell them that even tailoring requires some measurements and calculations and basic education is necessary for that,” Tabassum says.

Thanks to their never-say-die spirit, the girls managed to transform the village. When they first started the study centre in 2007, hardly two or three people in the village were educated. Now, say the girls proudly, 90 per cent of the children, including girls, go to school.

The ultimate triumph for the girls came through when not just the children but their mothers too began to show an interest in education. There are several women in the village now who have graduated from using thumb impressions to signing their own names.

“But all this was not easy. We faced so many challenges. The villagers would abuse us and say that we were spoiling their girls. The guys would comment on us every time we stepped out of the house. It was very humiliating. We would go to our homes and cry. But it was our parents’ support that kept us going.

Without them we wouldn’t have achieved anything,” says Tabassum.

There was even a time when the villagers asked them to vacate the public space where they ran their school. So, they started conducting classes from their own homes. “It used to hurt us when people said just because we were girls we wouldn’t be able to do anything. We have proved everyone wrong,” she says.

Today, the people who used to mock them and taunt them are coming forward to support them as they see the positive change in the village. The girls have even managed to convert an old madrassa into a English school. “We can’t give the children degrees.

So, we just prepare them and give them good education and help them connect to good schools,” says Tabassum.

The trio have managed to successfully work with over 250 kids so far and continue to get more admissions on a yearly basis. Along with teaching, the girls are now finishing their graduation and doing Information Technology training as they see huge scope in this sector. “We would just like to say to everyone that please let your daughters and sons study. And do whatever you can for your village as people there need you,” concludes Tabassum.

The thirst to serve the country at the national level has driven the Assistant Collector posted in Jabalpur to quit his job in pursuit of his "passion"– teaching.

In a Facebook post, Saini wrote, "In 2011, Gaurav Munjal, whom I have known since school as the closest friend, called and spoke about his new idea 'Unacademy' which he had started on YouTube by posting a bunch of videos."

"He (Munjal) had a vision of free education - and he asked me to join him. Four years later, 'Unacademy' is now India's one of the largest YouTube channels with 1.1 crore lessons delivered

and over 5 lakh students benefited," he said.

"Recently, Gaurav and I took a life changing decision, we decided to quit whatever we were doing to pursue this full time," he said in his post.

Jabalpur Collector S N Rupla said that Saini had decided to quit the IAS in September last year, but his resignation is yet to be accepted by the Department of Personnel and Training (DOPT).

Saini, in the Facebook post, termed the decision to quit his lucrative job as "difficult", but said he will pursue his passion to take forward 'Unacademy' full time.

"Personally, it was a difficult decision to quit the civil services, as I have utmost respect for it.

But I believe in Unacademy's vision of free education, and hence, will be pursuing it full time from now," he said in the post.

A new chapter for MANUU students T

he Bombay Stock Exchange bell was rung on the morning of February 10, 2016, to mark the beginning of the trade by 44 post-graduate students of Commerce and Business Management of the Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU), Hyderabad. Watching them were Mr Ashish Kumar Chauhan, Managing Director and CEO (BSE), Mr Zafar Yunus Sareshwala, the Chancellor of MANUU and Dimple Kapani from Rashtriya Institute of Skill and Education (RISE).

“I have been endeavouring to establish a link between MANUU and the corporate world. A Memorandum of Understanding between some of the well-known companies has been signed to offer training, skill development and finally employment of MANUU’s students. I am happy that the response from the corporate houses has been encouraging: 187 students of our University have been offered placements,” Mr Sareshwala added.

The 44 students were on a four-day study tour in Mumbai. They visited the offices of the Reserve Bank of India, Exim Bank, Reliance Industry and Valuable Group to gain first-hand knowledge of their working. Rise, a NGO focussing on education and health helped cordinate to MANNU to facilitate student's visit to Mumbai MANUU is a Central University established in 1998 by an act of Parliament to promote and develop the Urdu language and to impart vocational and technical education in Urdu medium through conventional and distance modes. The headquarters of the University is at Gachibowli, Hyderabad, sprawled over 200 acres. The students and staff of the University are drawn from all over India.

During the informative and interactive session with the students, Mr Chauhan said that India was the Best Performing Market and that the BSE was the world’s number one Stock Exchange with around 5400 companies trading. He advised the students that one should carefully study a company and the stock before investing or trading and not to depend on market tips.

Speaking about the students’ visit to the BSE, Mr Zafar Yunus Sareshwala said that after assuming charge as the Chancellor of MANUU a year ago, he had initiated this unique move to enable the Commerce and Business Management students to understand the working of banking, financial institutions, capital markets and industry houses. He went on to emphasise that taleem (education) and exposure were the key to success.

Don't link wrong interpretation to particular religion: Piyush Goyal January 28, 2016

Union Power Minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday said, “incorrect interpretations of religion by some people shouldn't be linked to a particular religion.”

At the "Taleem ki Taquat" conference here, Goyal banked on the power of religion and education to usher in progress in India.

"Focal point of every religion should be education. There should be a synergy of education, technology and religion. Religion is necessary for inculcating moral values and through education the person becomes open-minded," the minister for power, coal, and new and renewable energy told reporters here.

Asked whether religion can be an obstruction, Goyal said it can "never" be a limitation and it only strengthens society.

"If some people interpret religion in a wrong way and use it to spread wrong message then it's an individual-specific wrong act. One can't link it to religion.

Religion can't be blamed," added Goyal.

The first edition of this series on education was held in Mumbai on August 3, 2015 with the Maharashtra Chief Minister Shhri Devendra Fadnavis as the Chief Guest. The third edition was held in Hyderabad on September 20, 2015 with the Chief Guest being the Union Minister of Minority Affairs Dr. Najmal Heptulla.

The fourth edition was held in Lucknow with the chief guest being the Union Minister of Home Affairs Shri Rajnath Singh. RISE is devoted to taking the message of education across communities and regions of India and educating people about the unlimited possibilities that a good Taleem offers and the huge number of schemes and incentives available botyh through the Central and State governments.
