he fourth edition of Taleem ki Taquat organised by Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) at the Scientific Convention Centre, Lucknow on December 27, 2015 ended on a strong note with luminaries from the education sector putting forth their views.

The occasion was graced with the presence of Minister of Home Affairs Rajnath Singh as the Chief Guest while Guests of Honour were Maulana Maqbool Haq, Sanjay Desmukh, J S Rajput, Yaduvendra Mathur and Md Shakaib Qasmi. The Lucknow Edition of Taleem ki Taquat saw a huge participation of the people of the capital city of Uttar Pradesh to listen to a glittering array of speakers lead by the Union Minister Rajnath Singh. In his perceptive and expansive speech, Shri Singh who also happens to be the Member of Parliament from the city was emphatic that a sound upbringing and inculcating of the right values were fundamental to a rounded and good education. In fact, it is at the very core of any Taleem, he stressed.

“Only knowledge of letters is not sufficient.

We should have commitment to our values.

We should have tolerance; then only problems like militancy and Left-wing extremism plaguing the world and the country can be sorted out.” Stressing further on the role of education in Indian society, Singh reiterated, “Education should be such that people were not disconnected from their roots,” adding that education helped in socio-economic and cultural progress of a person.

The Minister said that India was the only country where all 72 sects of Muslims lived together peacefully. “It does not happen even in any Islamic country. When the Persians were exiled from their own country, they were given most respect in India. It is the wonder of education and culture of this country,” the Minister noted. Md Shakaib Qasmi, Director, Hujjatul Islam Academy, Darululoom Waqf Deoband, said that if Muslims scholars and clerics were not taken on board, the effort to modernise madrassas would go in vain. Muslim higher education institutions should get University Grants Commission (UGC) affiliation, Qasmi demanded.

Zafar Sareshwala too strongly pitched for the need of importance of education among Muslims in India. “Taleem Ki Taquat is taking this message to Muslims,” said Sareshwala.

He added: “Once the government has been elected, people should have full faith in it.

On how Muslims were reaping benefits from the Modi government, Sareshwala said that around 13 crore people, including Muslims, have got LPG subsidy. “I haven’t come across a case from the community where a person has been deprived of the government scheme on account of being a Muslim,” Sareshwala added.

Our Taleem will be incomplete if we do not respect our teachers I am also an example of Taleem ki Taquat.

My father was a railway employee in Alambagh. We are residents of Farukhabad. My mother had to sell her jewellery to get me admitted in school. I realize, that to get the best education for a child, a mother can do anything. So does the father. I want to pay respects to my mother and father who could do anything to educate their sons and daughters. Our first guru is our mother and the second is our teachers. I want to pay respect to our teachers through Taleem ki Taquat. We should respect our teachers, and if we don’t give them due respect, we won’t be

able to achieve true Taleem, and our progress will be blocked.

I am confident that if there is one taleem that can be truly transformational, it is financial literacy. We should pledge that in every family in Lucknow must have bank accounts through Jan Dhan Yojana. More than `28,000 crore has accumulated in these accounts. This `28,000 crore is for that poor mother who will not have to see her jewellery for her child’s education. These bank accounts and insurances like the Bima Yojana, Jeevan Jyoti Yojana and much more can be beneficial for all of us.

Better your knowledge for the prosperity of future generations I always remember an incident that happened 20 years ago whenever I meet or see Rajnath Singh. I recall one of his decisions when he was the CM of UP. He decided that he would stop cheating in examinations in UP. The Taleem acquired through cheating is meaningless. In UP, lakhs of Class 12 students are educated in schools that do not have labs. And, it is in these circumstances, that the Chief Minister took his decision.

That one decision raised the quality of education in India. In my 50 years of experience in education, that decision was instrumental in redefining the quality of education in India. I am reiterating that historic decision, because Taleem is not restricted to only collecting degrees, certificates and diplomas.

We all know that in every country

J S Rajput Educationist and former Director, NCERT wherever civilization has flourished, every country has made an effort to acquire knowledge. There is no country or place where knowledge is not sought. Only a human has the tenacity to understand and to imagine. He can dream. His constant effort is to better the life of his coming generation by acquiring knowledge. He wans the future generation to be more prosperous and live peacefully.

If we can’t bring revolution, we won’t be able to progress I want to ask the enlightened people and enlightened faculty, if we take the 100 best persons from academics, how many Muslims would figure in that list? We are 13-14 per cent of the population and this is discrimination. We discriminate amongst ourselves.

We have to perform. We can do it. A person from our community topped the IAS exam in 2010 and a boy from Manipur topped the CBSE exam. How then can we say we are discriminated?

In the Quran and Hadith, it has been said that if people from our community can’t bring revolution, we won’t be able to progress. I fought all odds and started this

way. Now we have an university, a law college, a B Ed college. Every year we get 2000 students in our institutions. Our model is such that we give 10 per cent reservation to the under-privileged. We have nearly 700 students undergoing free education. I want to emphasise that we are 13-14 per cent of the population, let this 13-14 per cent build this nation. There will be no discrimination, if we do not perform but then we will not be contributing to build this nation.

E=F: Education is equal to a bright future We talk about Skill India, Make in India, but I must say ‘Education India’ is also very important. We should also embrace ‘Education India’.

There is a formula, which is E=mc2.

It is a most powerful scientific formula.

However, I want to give an even more powerful formula than that: e=f. Education is equal to future. And if we can follow that formula, we can take our nation to greater heights.

Automation and disruptive technologies, in my opinion, are the biggest challenges. When we talk about entrepreneurship, we must also think of imparting skills to our younger generation. It is said that the mind which has thought and hand which has skill that hand have work. We should tread that path.

Skill development is being ignored in IT and the general service sector. I consider China as the hub of industrial training. Even after so many years of Independence, our country has only 6,000 Industrial Training Institutes (it is) in comparison to China’s 5,00,000 ITIs. You can well imagine the emphasis on skill development by the government. To reach somewhere near China’s standand, you can guess, what kind of effort we have to make. The ‘Make in India’ programme should be aligned with universities to get greater mileage.

he fourth edition of Taleem Ki Taquat in Lucknow was historic for many reasons.

For starters, it was our first conference in India’s most important and most populous state of Uttar Pradesh.

It was the first time that the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh was taking part in our event — and in his constituency. Most of all, the response of the people of the city of Lucknow was heartwarming. They came to listen to our stellar list of speakers in large numbers and patiently sat through the two-and-half hours absorbing every word that was spoken.

So where do we go from here?

After all, every event has seen bigger and better audience participation, the country’s most credible and respected leaders, academicians, public figures and industry leaders in attendance. They inspire both young and old alike and there is a new vigour and enthusiasm at the end of each event.

It is this energy that we will now be tapping into. What we intend to do is follow up each event with local events of a smaller scale in different areas around each city we have visited to assess the local conditions and requirements and connect them with those who provide these services.

There are scores of institutions in India that are doing remarkable work to provide a platform for young boys and girls to arm themselves with the best possible skill and education.

Many of them run centres of training, many provide fellowships, and many have skill development projects. Alas, not too many are aware of all that is available. We hope to be that platform by taking forward the energy of each event and converting into something tangible and longlasting for the people of the region.

India has one of the youngest populations in the world. They are aspirational, hard working and committed. Imagine the heights they can achieve if only they are provided with the right direction and the right platform.

Together we shall make sure it happens.

This is the month India became a proud Republic. Let’s celebrate that as well. So, Happy Republic Day to all of you!

Agastya creates tomorrow's leaders

Sravani came across Agastya International FounR dation as a sixth grade student in the village of Shantipuram in Andhra Pradesh. Her parents are

poor. When she was a baby, her father had found it hard to make enough money to make ends meet.

Studying in a poorly equipped government school, she grew up as a timid child till well into middle school.

Her fortunes changed, she says, after she was exposed to the foundation.

Agastya was by then rapidly developing into one of the largest experiments in the world in science education. Founded in 2000 by Ramji Raghavan, a former investment banker, Agastya had set up a large campus in Kuppam with well-equipped labs. Its mobile labs went into village

schools in the district and beyond, making children do experiments with their own hands. Like everyone else, Sravani enjoyed the experiments, and looked forward to the day when she would go to the Agastya campus or see a mobile lab. Then she was chosen as a young instructor leader by

Agastya had conceived the Young Instructor Leader (YIL) programme in 2007.

Children who show exceptional ability to learn are trained by the foundation and then made to teach science to other children. The foundation has over 7,000 Young Instructor Leaders spread over south India and parts of north India.

The programme was a game-changer for many students. "I lost my fear once I became a young leader," says Sravani. "I became confident about going on stage and speaking." The increase in confidence was not just in public speaking. She also learned how to organise her life. Now she is the lead strategist of the family, advising her father — who works as a field verification officer in the Andhra Pradesh government — on how to take decisions on her education, finance and other family matters.

She has explained to her mother the importance of learning, and told them that they would have to work hard till she finished her education. A few years ago, she persuaded her father not to sell their cow, explaining how it was an investment for the future.

Now they have four cows, and earn `12,000 a month selling milk, with which they fund Sravani's education at the expensive Sri Gayatri Junior College.

Many students have gone on to do well for themselves, studying in professional colleges and looking forward to good careers. "Even if Agastya fails to teach them science," says V K Aatre, former Scientific Advisor to the Defence Minister and now a trustee of Agastya, "it is worth it because it gives the children confidence."

Aatre has been associated with the foundation from 2004, when he provided Raghavan with ideas on how to get science inside young minds. Later, when he retired and came back to Bengaluru, Aatre got more involved with Agastya and became a trustee. He influenced the foundation to start science centres, and to spark creativity in children rather than

“Today, IS is being talked across the globe. But India is the lone country in the world where it has not been able to establish its roots due to family values of the Indian culture,” he said.

Citing an example, the Union minister said, “A Muslim youth got caught in radicalisation in Mumbai and his parents came to me with the request to save him. Such are the values of our country. I have full faith that IS can never have supremacy in India.” Singh was addressing a conference here. He said that it was a miracle of the country’s culture that Imams took out a procession against IS, reports PTI. “It is our responsibility to preserve this culture. If we can keep it intact, no one can prevent India from becoming a superpower,” he said.

“The family feared that one of their sons was getting influenced by the ISIS ideology and immediately informed the government. This is the Indian value system,” the union home minister said. Building the point further, he said, “India is perhaps the only country where all the 72 odd sects of Muslims live in peace. India also has the oldest church in Kerala.”

They include two youths from Kalyan on the outskirts of Mumbai, an Australiabased Kashmiri, one youth from Telangana, one from Karnataka, one Oman-based Indian and another Singapore-based Indian.

"Only knowledge of letters is not sufficient. We should have commitment to our values. We should have tolerance then only problems like these plaguing the world and the country can be sorted out," he said.

Singh said that even youths with highest degree were involved in such activities and have lost their way. "Education should be such that people were not disconnected from their roots," he said, adding that education helped in socio-economic and cultural progress of a person.

"Education gives so much power to a person, that he is not dependent on luck and faith," he added.

Highlighting the power of education, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said on Sunday that if the world wanted to fight the menace of terrorism, it would have to spread the light of knowledge so that people were able to differentiate between good and bad.

“Terror incidents are now very common. There is no part of the world that is not affected by terrorism. In India too, it has different faces like Maoism and Naxalism.

Then, there is violence in the name of religion. If the world wants to get rid of this threat, it has to spread the light of knowledge,” Singh said while addressing a seminar on ‘Talim ki Taqat’, organised by Maulana Azad University at the Convention Centre here on Sunday.

Singh said that education did not mean cramming some historical dates or solving some numerical problem. “Education should inculcate values among the students. Here comes the role of schools, teachers and parents in educating children about the difference between good values and bad values,” he said. “Today there are talks about ISIS. As Home Minister, I can tell you that if a child gets swayed by the doctrine of ISIS, only parents can play a positive role in bringing the child back into the mainstream. There are examples of how some Muslim families have played exemplary role in bringing these boys back to their roots,” Singh said.

The Home Minister referred to a Mumbai family whose ward wanted to go to Syria. The father of that boy met Singh and he succeeded in persuading the boy to shun the path of violence.

“As long as we have high family values, the ISIS indoctrination will not be able to break our family bond,” he said.

Singh said that ‘talim’ (education) should help people to spread peace and it should be a binding force.

“In India, religion and education are linked with each other. All our scriptures talk about religion and also teach us about the value of education,” he said.

“India is probably the only country in the world which has all the 72 sects of Islam. This shows the importance our country gives to Islam and how knowledge helps us to live in peace and tranquillity,” he added.

The Union Home Minister said that Lucknow was known for its ‘tehzib’, ‘nazaqat’ and ‘talim’. “When people did not know even about Oxford or Cambridge universities our people knew what ‘talim’ was,” he added.

“It is the power of knowledge that helped Aryabhatt to invent ‘zero’ and now the world acclaims India’s education prowess,” he said.

Union home minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday said that global terror outfit Islamic State has failed in its attempts to establish roots in India due to strong family values in the society which act as deterrent to radicalisation.

“Today, ISIS is being talked across the globe. But India is the lone country in the world where it has not been able to establish its roots due to family values of the Indian culture,” he said.

Citing an example, the Union minister said, “A Muslim youth got caught in radicalisation in Mumbai and his parents came to me with the request to save him. Such are the values of our country. I have full faith that IS can never have supremacy in India.”

Mr Singh was addressing a conference here. He said that it was a miracle of the country’s culture that Imams took out a procession against ISIS. “It is our responsibility to preserve this culture. If we can keep it intact, no one can prevent India from becoming a superpower,” he said.
