Hopefully you are reading this with England in a commanding position in the series!! We have lots of good wholesome Hanover content for you this month. We are delighted to feature another of your local councillors on page 11. Also featured in this issue is a local resident who has published their first novel on 9. We hope you find some things of interest in this edition.

DEAD STAR ISLAND

Dead Star Island

SHANTOS

ANDREW SHANTOS

by Andrew Shantos

Dad-of-two Andrew Shantos, 41, of Elm Grove, has just published his first novel ... Dead Star Island.

Tell us more about your book...

It’s a spoof murder mystery, starring Mario Gunzabo, once Greece’s top detective, now a one-armed tennis coach living in Worthing. He’s brought in to Dead Star Island, home to sixteen superstars the world thinks are dead, but who faked their deaths to live in tranquil anonymity on a desert island paradise. Until now, that is, because there’s a killer on the loose, taking them out one by one in repeats of the deaths they staged to leave the real world. How did you come up with the idea?

About five years ago, I was listening to LA Woman by The Doors, feeling a bit sad and thinking, “Oh, I wish Jim Morrison wasn’t dead.’ Then I thought, ‘Maybe he isn’t. Maybe he’s hanging out with Elvis on a desert island somewhere… Of course, Jimi would be there. Marilyn too...” And I found I couldn’t stop thinking of people who’d be there with them - basically anyone who was on my bedroom wall as a teenager. How long have you lived in Elm Grove?

12 years now, but I’ve been walking up this hill from a young age. I’ve always lived in Brighton, and when I was at Dorothy Stringer I had a few mates who lived in Hanover, and whose mums always seemed to let us stay up later than mine. What do you like about the area?

There’s more of a sense of community here than anywhere else I know. That’s quite rare I think, particularly

in a city. You can be whatever you like, whoever and however you like, and still you belong. Have you got any more books planned?

I’ve got lots of ideas, if anything too many. It took three years to write Dead Star Island, so at the moment I’m being choosy about what I do next because it will take a lot of time and energy. I don’t do much planning, but I like to mull over things for a few months, let them stew away deep in the subconscious until I start actively working on something new. Dead Star Island by Andrew Shantos is published in paperback by APP priced £8.99 and on Kindle & Ebook priced £4.99. You can buy it here: http:// www.amazon.co.uk/Dead-Star-Island-AndrewShantos/dp/0992811627

Hanover Gourmet Girls Pub Review...

The Greys - Southover Street Last month the Gourmet Girls visited the Greys on Southover Street - always a welcome pit stop on the hike upwards, with lovely friendly faces and a most excellent selection of eclectic music all through the week. We arrived on a warm Friday evening and sat outside sipping wine for a while watching folk head into town, all of us feeling lucky to live in our lovely village where we ‘have it all’ on our doorstep. The atmosphere of The Greys encompasses this with its familiar friendliness, buzziness and family-run feel. The bar is busy with its regulars and curious first timers, eager to sample food and music on the hill. The staff were very attentive and we ordered quickly from the ‘Graze at the Greys’ menu which offers a wide range of 20 small dishes, all at £2.90 each. The dishes came promptly and en masse….. And they kept on coming and coming until we couldn’t fit any more on the table. The presentation of the dishes was lovely and such a wide choice to suit everyone. We enjoyed some more than others, which of course is personal taste, but what stood out by far was the authentic Greek dishes, so much so that we are really looking forward to going back and trying the Kleftiko and Spinach & Feta Slice (Chris’s mum’s recipe!) on a Sunday!! Fantastic value for money and the small dishes were perfect for us Gourmet Girls who wanted to leave a little space for an extra glass of wine. Guaranteed you’ll feel the same and want to stay for “just one more for the road” before you make that trek up that hill! Overall Gourmet Girls ratings: Food = 3.5 stars Friendliness and atmosphere = 5+ stars Value for Money = 5 stars

The second in a series of interviews with the local councillors in Hanover…

Meet Your Local Councillor... Emma Daniel Emma was re-elected in May as a Labour councillor for Hanover & Elm Grove. She is also Chair of the council’s Neighbourhood, Communities and Equalities Committee. Do you live in the Hanover area? I live on the other side of the Lewes Road near Sainsbury’s, which is technically in St Peter’s and North Laine ward. However, my daughter goes to school in the ward and I share most facilities with the families of Hanover including the Patch, the Level and Queen’s Park. I work in Kemptown and get the no 23 through Hanover most days which is handy to keep an eye on any outstanding bin collections. What is your background? Currently I work in a local deaf school doing fundraising and marketing part-time to give me free working days to do my councillor work. I am also learning BSL (British Sign Language) which I love! Previously I have been a Chief Executive of a national charity, a regional charity and worked in the fields of homelessness, voluntary sector and digital democracy policy and projects. I have also volunteered for most of my life for various causes including the students’ union, refugee advice projects, child poverty projects and mental health. How do you manage to combine your work with bringing up a family? I have a 7-year-old daughter and a 13-year-old stepson. They are both used to me volunteering for causes since they were tiny and “going to meetings”. It is sometimes hard on them and me, especially when I have late nights or weekend commitments. When I feel like I haven’t spent enough time with them I will take them away for a weekend just us, which also gives my

partner a break when he has been doing the bulk of bed and bath times. It took about a year for us to adjust to the demands of political life as a family and it wasn’t easy. I spend most of my evening time at home, cleaning, tidying or working, and I haven’t watched any films or TV in a very long time but I don’t mind. My partner’s belief in me and my family’s pride in what I do mean everything to me. What do you hope to achieve in Hanover over the next four years? I hope to achieve cleaner streets. The main issue I have is that people are unhappy with the streets being dirty. I think that the new neighbourhood enforcement teams will mean that we see a much tidier area free of fly tipping, dog poo and general litter. It is important that the refuse services work well for the area too. I also hope to achieve more secondary school provision for families in the area as the current ones are already full (Varndean and Stringer) and the pressure is getting greater year by year. How can people contact you? Please either email emma.daniel@brighton-hove. gov.uk or follow me on Twitter @huxley06 or like my Facebook page: EmmaDanielforHanoverElmGrove.

Music and Wine at St Luke’s Music and Wine at St Luke’s hosts two concerts this month. On Friday 14th August 2015 the perfect way to spend this summer’s evening is to come and relax to a beautiful fusion of South Indian melodies with North Indian rhythms. As Akash, Lucy Hudson (flute) and Marc Clayton (tabla) met and began playing together in 2011, having both returned to Brighton after extensive periods of musical study and exploration in India. Two weeks later on Friday 28th August 2015, pianist Paul Searle-Barnes will come to entertain you with a second half of some of the best-loved music of the great jazz pianist-composers of the early 20th century: Billy Mayerl, Gershwin, Zez Confrey and “Fats” Waller. The first half is conventionally classical, including some of the greatest music by Chopin, Haydn and Schubert. All concerts start at 7.30pm. Wine and refreshments are served. Disabled access. Tickets: £7 / £5 concessions / £3 under-12s available on the door.

Wines for the Barbecue Bank Holiday

As an eternal optimist, predicting a blazing (though hopefully not literally) August bank holiday, today’s column tackles the subject of what wine to partner the BBQ feast.

Whilst men across the land gear up for their annual pyrotechnic display, we retreat to a safe distance to consider our options. Broadly there are two routes available - to square up to the robust meaty flavours with a hearty red, a Zinfandel, Shiraz or even better a South African Pinotage, or to seek refuge in a refreshing wine alternative to beer. A Sauvignon Blanc is a crowd-pleasing safe choice or, with a seafood grill, try instead a dry Riesling (also a great choice for Asian dishes and marinades). Finally think time of day and temperature. Even some of the heavier reds may benefit from a quick chill and for daytime BBQs watch the alcohol content. Being too drunk to notice the raw chicken will leave you with more than a sore head the next day! Charlotte Marples: www.thewinewoman.uk

hanover Here are a couple of items that may be of interest...

Young Carers Need Volunteer Drivers Very few Young Carers will see themselves as Young Carers, and very few know that there is help available, or that they can ask for it. They may also not see the benefits of letting people, particularly schools, know the situation they are in. Here at the Brighton & Hove Young Carers Team we offer a range of groups and activities for young carers throughout the year. Some are fun breaks and new experiences, whilst others are more focused on supporting young carers around specific needs and issues. Often just having the chance to spend time with other young carers can really help!

Transport to these activities can be both costly and unreliable and here at Young Carers we would love to hear from anyone who would be interested in becoming a volunteer driver to enable our Young Carers to more easily access these events and keep our costs down to allow us to meet their needs more directly. The position would be on an as-needed basis with expenses paid. If this is something that you feel you could offer, please contact Elizabeth Freeman on 01273 746222.

ROOF & FIREWALL Specialists Have you got damp in the corner of a bedroom or along the ceiling of an upstairs wall? Nine times out of ten it’s faulty lead flashings and firewalls causing these problems. The majority of Brighton homes are at least 100 years old and so are their firewalls. Many firewalls are coming to the end of their natural lives. If you want them to last another 100 years we are the FIREWALL experts. If it’s not the lead or the firewall we can help with most other roofing problems from complete reroofing to minor repairs.

Thinking of Moving?

It has been an interesting last six weeks as I have moved house for the first time in nine years. As an estate agent we see the trials and tribulations of the moving process and can perhaps be a little guilty of forgetting the stress involved in the process. After all, we see it every day and know that there is a solution to most issues that arise. But having been on the other side of the fence, it has given me a new appreciation of just how stressful the whole process can be. The first pearl of wisdom I can give is to make sure you have the right people on your side. This starts with selecting an estate agent you trust and who has a clear strategy for selling your home. You need to trust their advice, be sure they understand your requirements, and trust them to get your sale through to completion. It all sounds straightforward but an experienced guiding hand can make all the difference, so choose wisely. The next decision anyone moving needs to make is choosing a solicitor. Again, this seems as if it should be easy, and you’d be forgiven for thinking they all offer the same service but it’s not that simple. The choice these days is mind-boggling: from cheap on-line conveyancing companies to expensive longestablished firms. In my case I went local – and I’m glad I did; there is a certain reassurance in knowing your solicitor is just down the road. We needed to exchange quickly after several delays and were able to pop in to our solicitor’s office and sign the contracts and exchange that afternoon – this probably saved our sale. Once you have this support structure in place and know you have the right people working for you it makes everything else so much simpler. Issues will arise – for us it was major roof works – but with the right people around you it is much easier to resolve these

problems and have the confidence that your sale will go through and your purchase is the right one. But perhaps the best piece of advice I can give is be prepared. Before you go on the market make sure you have all the paperwork in place. Speak to your agent and solicitor about what you may need. If you’ve made alterations to your property, fish out any building regulation certificates or planning documents. If you’re selling a flat make sure you know and understand your lease, maintenance responsibilities and charges. And if you’re worried a survey may throw up major issues, consider having your own survey carried out. 21 Here is the monthly update from Hanover Action for Sustainable Living...

One Planet Living

In Hanover & Elm Grove? In the last year we have hosted two public meetings on Zero Carbon Britain, for the Centre for Alternative Technology. This picked up many of the ‘big picture’ environmental issues raised in a previous event on One Planet Living. Both are ways of thinking about the environmental impact of humans on our planet – but that challenge us, in our community, to be more ambitious. We need to take further steps to curtail our environmental impact, which is currently unsustainable. Brighton & Hove currently uses the resources at a rate of more than three planets, whereas we only have a share of one planet. HASL has recently agreed to have a one-year theme of ‘One Planet Living in Hanover & Elm Grove’. To be launched in the autumn, this aims to help all of us consider how we can take up the challenge of becoming more sustainable in our lifestyles. Come and get involved – and help us to take forward One Planet Living. If you can’t be part of the core team, then look out for the community-based workshop that will kick off our action planning after the summer.

Streets are for Sharing (and playing, and greening…) Over the year HASL’s ‘Streets are for Sharing’ initiative has helped to re-shape street life in Hanover, with candle-lit poetry, decorated bikes, ‘dressed’ cars and street parties.

Residents in Washington Street organised an indoor street party at the Community Centre with over 100 neighbours and friends. Neighbouring street Belgrave ran an outdoor play street in spring. Keeping it simple with a closed street allowed kids to run without fear or interruption of play. There was a birthday cake for a 90-year-old neighbour with ‘Happy Birthday’ accompanied by a local cello player! Want to close your street for a party? Here’s how: • Drum up interest to get 65% approval from residents in the area. • Go for the simplest of ‘play streets’ with hopscotch and hoops, or go all out for a street festival. Check out ideas on www.streetparty.org.uk. • Ask for a Street Closure Application Form (see HASL website). • Put up posters/do invites/flyer. Ask people to remove their car on the day. • Erect simple barriers at the ends of the street and staff them with people to re-direct cars from entering the street. Go on – share your street! Drama teacher Sami-Jayne Farnsworth on the importance of play…

Learning Through Play With the arrival of summer, now is the perfect time to consider the benefits of play for your child. There is unfortunately a recognised national decline in the amount and quality of children’s play. With so many largely technology-based toys, children are often not getting the array of play experiences that they would have in years gone by. Whilst there is a place for technological toys, children thrive on hands-on play, interacting with the world and people around them. Children learn through play, as well as develop essential social and communication skills for life. Variety provides increased learning opportunities, so get them out and about to the beach, the park, or in the garden. However, children can and will play anywhere and the beauty of play is that it’s free! You don’t need to take them to expensive play-centres, or spend a fortune filling up their days with outings; there are plenty of play opportunities at home. There are 16 recognised play types and 10 of them are accessible through drama, including communi-

cation, creative and social play. So, by providing some “loose parts” at home (bits and bobs from around the house), they can explore their imaginations and likely make up games and stories that you wouldn’t dream up in a month of Sundays! A sheet, newspaper, loo rolls, twigs and plastic bottles will go a long way. As you know, children absolutely love it when adults are prepared to step away from the adult world of social protocol and join in with their imaginative games. So go on, spend an afternoon as a pirate, a fairy, or a superhero - I guarantee you will have a new sense of freedom afterwards! When September arrives, you may like to consider bringing them along for a free trial class at ActAble Academy. Held at the Hanover Centre on Mondays after school, these drama classes provide a space for children to access play through use of their imaginations. We grow our creativity, confidence and collaborative skills, with use of “loose parts”, costumes and props, in a friendly, relaxed environment. Older children are also introduced to more formal training and some have recently chosen to take a drama exam. ActAble is an inclusive organisation, catering for all children. Sami-Jayne is also an inclusion playworker, children’s entertainer (www.zip-zap-boing.co.uk) and actress. Contact: www.actable.co.uk 07891670114 actable@live.com

Here we bring you the latest news from the Hanover and Elm Grove Local Action Team...

Parking and Street Improvement Update

It’s official; now we are working with the council to firm up the details and come up with the best possible proposal, based on the community proposals (see HEG LAT website for details). A HEG LAT deputation attended the Environment and Transport Committee on the 7th July and the council agreed to get officers to sit down with our working group to develop our plan and turn it into a full proposal for consultation to take to the next meeting in October. So now we need to get our skates on and make sure the final proposal for consultation has all the key elements we need in it. Though we have comprehensive survey returns for the main Hanover area, we still need more survey returns before it is clear whether the north of Elm Grove, Elm Grove itself or the Pankhurst Estate wish to either be part of the Hanover controlled parking area, wish a different kind of controlled parking or do not want any controlled parking. If you can help, please contact us: Chris Taylor greysland@sky.com and/or David Gibson davidsg@ntlworld.com.

Have you ideas to improve your street?

While the main focus of the community plan is to improve parking for as many as possible, the consultation on the plan can include consultation on other street improvements (not just parking) that can be brought in at the same time. The working group is looking closely at comments and suggested improvements from the surveys and are keen that where possible we use the scheme to fund improvements to our streets. Islingword Place residents have signed in support of reconfiguring the planter area, other streets such as Cobden Road are interested in one-way systems. Some people would like cycle racks and more secure covered storage. Do you have any ideas for your street? If you do, please contact Chris Taylor greysland@sky.com and/or David Gibson davidsg@ntlworld.com.
