Ed’s

A Letter from the Editor

Anthony Kilner

Changing Face of Homelessness This month’s feature stories and interviews on the Changing Face of Homelessness are amazing to say the least, and it’s been an amazing week getting them together. As I sit here and write this Ed’s Letter, it’s deep into Homelessness Week August 4 to August 13. This week is all about making people aware that homelessness is still a huge part of our society. There are over 116,000 homeless in Australia, and as a community we need to do more to recognise and understand this problem. The greatest increase in the 2016 homeless figures is with women aged 35 plus. This crisis affects more than just the women who are predominantly escaping domestic violence situations as with them often come children. Their plight needs to be addressed, as does that of the men involved. We haven’t even touched on the older Australians, often retired and living in poor

6

Supernal Magazine

Letter

conditions due to loss of income, family issues and more. They are also a growing number in the homelessness debate and that this area also needs addressing. Our feature story is that of Susan Carew, a World Peace Clown. Susan has chosen to live homeless at this point in her life and off the government grid, which means she doesn’t collect any benefits from them in any way. This is her way of making a statement to the world that the system is broken and people really need help through love and understanding, not judgement. Her story offers an amazing insight into her plight, as she has been homeless not once but twice, so she has understood it and works with it. I was lucky enough to sit down and spend a morning with Major Brendan Nottle from the Salvation Army. What an amazing story he has to offer on the many facets to understanding homelessness in Melbourne and the greater Melbourne area, as well as Australia wide. This was a fascinating meeting and there’s more great information in his video that goes way beyond what is in the story itself.

AUGUST 2019 This panel explored the homelessness topic and various ways to help deal with it. These sorts of panels, driven by experts in their field, social workers and people who have lived the experience, are mind blowing. They give fascinating information on many subjects and are very educational to the people who attend.

Sam and Pebbles happily chatted with Street Crew Melbourne

Watch the video here: Celeste and a group of her Rainbow Connections team from the Mornington Peninsula headed into Melbourne with bags packed full of food to work with Street Crew Melbourne. From that meeting between Celeste and Street Crew, I was handed a name and number to contact Teriana who is living over in Perth and was one of the first members of Street Crew. As a complete stranger I chatted with her for a couple of hours and was staggered by her story. Teriana is a trans-woman who ended up on the streets through domestic violence. At a time when she should have been loved by her partner, she found herself on the street. It’s a powerful story of falling to the lowest point in life to now being happily married and reconnected to her family. There’s also a great yarn from a panel discussion called There is No Place like Home, hosted at the Salvos headquarters by AIS (Australian Intercultural Society).

All in all, it’s been a busy week. One of our potential covers was shot by Celeste and included Sam and Pebbles the dog. Sam wanted to connect with me. I tried unsuccessfully on several occasions to chat with him via phone and also tried to find him as I wandered the streets of Melbourne, but with no luck. The one thing I have gained an understanding of this week, is that every person I or my colleges has chatted with has a story. I hope when you read this month’s issue you understand that it’s their story, their journey, that keeps these people going under some of the most trying and arduous conditions possible. I’d suggest that if you get a chance to become involved, please do. Do what you can to help, support and nurture - we are all human! In the rest of this issue, we have our regular writers drafting up some fantastic words for their columns and as usual, Supernal is well worth a read! Don’t forget to get in touch with any feedback, questions or ideas about stories. We’d love to hear from you. Have a Supernal month!

SUPERNAL NEWS

August 2019

Melbourne’s Street Doctor for the Homeless When considering the plight of the homeless, there are a myriad of issues with which rough sleepers have to contend. The anxiety and uncertainty associated with simply living and meeting basic needs can be overwhelming. Rough sleeping can also create many severe health conditions and yet many homeless people are not able to access health services like the rest of the community. Often they may not have a Medicare Card or any money to pay for medication. The Green Cross outreach bus brings community health services right to the people who need it most. For over a year Cohealth street Doctor Kate Coles, community health nurse Vaan Phongsavan and a social worker have provided free medical services out of an outreach bus to homeless patients. Recently, Lord Mayor Sally Capp announced the City of Melbourne will invest $200,000 to enable the service to also operate every Monday in the CBD. All patients are eligible for treatment, including asylum seekers and refugees, who don’t have access to Medicare. “The mobile bus service will provide services direct to rough sleepers where they are needed,” Cr Capp said.

Orange Sky Laundry Being of “no fixed address” has its own set of difficulties and for those who are rough sleeping or couch surfing having regular access to a hot shower or a laundry to wash their clothes can be a challenge. In 2014, Orange Sky Laundry, Australia’s first free mobile laundry service for the homeless was launched by two twenty year old mates, Nic Marchesi and Lucas Patchett from Brisbane. Today, Orange Sky operates 21 mobile vans servicing 149 locations with over 1400 dedicated volunteers Australia-wide. Their vans wash and dry over 6.9 tonnes of clothing and bedding for the homeless every week across Australia. The focus is on creating a safe, positive and supportive environment for people who are too often ignored or who feel disconnected from the community. In 2016 Orange Sky launched a new mobile service: free hot showers for the homeless. One of the first homeless to try the shower van described it as “bloody awesome”. The service is run completely by volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering for the service or would like to know more, head to https://orangesky.org.au/volunteer. 8

Street Swags also promote community awareness and education on homelessness in Australia. If you would like to know more about how to gift a Jumbuck swag to a homeless person go to https://www.streetswags.org/gift-1.

They collect thousands of personal hygiene products, such as pads and tampons, for women experiencing homelessness and poverty ensuring everyone is afforded the dignity many of us take for granted. Your small act of kindness gives monthly dignity to Australia’s most vulnerable women. By donating you are giving women experiencing housing or financial hardship the essentials, so they don’t need to choose between food and dignity. The 2019 August Dignity Drive is now on! Pets of the Homeless POTH is a not-for-profit volunteer-powered organisation that is 95 percent community funded. The organisation works with social service agencies to provide assistance to pets of people experiencing or at risk of homelessness. The organisation is committed to “keeping best friends together”.” Services such as veterinary care in the form of de-sexing, microchipping and vaccinations are provided as well as short-term emergency boarding and fostering for pets. You can also donate food and pet supplies at various drop off points in many locations. Your tax-deductible donation will help keep people and their pets together – preventing hunger, suffering, abandonment, surrender and loss of the animals they love. Over the Rainbow Wear It Purple Day Wear it Purple Day is one of several days of significance that our community celebrates each year. This day is all about celebrating our LGBTQIA+ youth. by Celeste de Vis Wear it Purple was founded in 2010 in response to global stories of teenagers sharing their experiences of bullying, discrimination and bigotry because they were gender or sexually diverse. Tyler Clementi, a teen who took his own life after being ‘outed’ by a colleague, was one tragic story. This annual day of celebration, and commemoration for lives

lost, has grown to ensure every young person knows they are important, they are loved for who they are and that they belong to a community that is wide, varied and beautiful. In Australia, the largest study ever conducted of the mental health and care pathways of trans and gender diverse young people took place in 2016/17. It was called Trans Pathways. There were 859 participants. It was also the first Australian study to incorporate the views of parents and guardians of trans young people (194 participants). The result of the Trans Pathways study was staggering. It found that trans young people are at very high risk for poor mental health, self-harming and suicide attempts. Three in four trans young people had experienced anxiety or depression. One in two trans young people had attempted suicide (48%),

10

Supernal Magazine

whilst four out of five trans young people had engaged in self-harm. The major causes for these negative outcomes were that trans and gender diverse young people experience a higher rate of issues with school, university or higher education institutions, peer rejection, bullying and little or no family support.

“This day is all about celebrating our LGBTQIA+ youth.” Some other stats attributed to the study were: • Trans young people found it difficult to access health support, with 60% feeling isolated from medical and mental health services. • 42% reached out to a service provider who did not understand or respect their gender identity.

• Problems with health

services included a lack of education about gender diversity, not knowing where to refer trans clients and transphobia. Please see the following link to read the two-page Trans Pathways summary: https://www.telethonkids. org.au/our-research/ brain-and-behaviour/ mental-health-and-youth/ youth-mental-health/transpathways/ Rainbow Connections Youth and Family group celebrates Wear it Purple Day each year. So, what can you do on Wear it Purple Day? • Wear purple on Friday 30th August 2019

30.8.19 beautiful cherubs have created purple badges, purple cupcakes and attended events outside of Shed 11, our group space. This year’s theme for Wear it Purple Day 2019 is ‘Stand Up. Stand Out.’ - paying tribute to those who’ve paved the way for LGBTQIA+ people and welcoming the positive impact of those who are able to be out, proud and visible. The parents and carers of Rainbow Connections value the opportunity to celebrate their child and all youth globally, who are gender and sexually diverse. The children enjoy participating in an activity that involves one of their favourite colours and is a fun project that focusses on empowerment.

We believe that everybody has the right to be proud of who they are. Our LGBTQIA+ children found their authentic selves before we, parents and carers, discovered who they really were. It wasn’t a choice for them - it was innate.

“One in two trans young people had attempted suicide (48 percent)…” Through their bravery, they have fought mental, emotional and sometimes physical battles to be heard and validated by their trusted adults. Sadly, we acknowledge many children on our planet live in homes where parents and/or carers refuse to affirm their child’s gender or sexuality.

• Download free Wear it Purple posters from: https:// www.wearitpurple.org/wipday-resources • Talk to your child’s School Welfare Officer or School Counsellor and encourage them to host an event at the school. • Speak to your work colleagues about hosting a morning or afternoon tea where funds can be raised for Wear it Purple. • Show your visibility of support by purchasing some Wear it Purple merch on the day. • Check an online search engine for Wear it Purple events and participate in a celebration. Schools, community groups and workplaces can register to share an event that they will be hosting on August 30th 2019. Schools are also able to receive free resources for their students through the following webpage: https://www. wearitpurple.org/ But most importantly - don’t forget to mark Wear it Purple Day on Friday 30 August! Our world is rich and varied and filled with many people of diversity. Let’s help empower younger generations!

Anxiety Disorders By Derran Heney RN Mental Health Professional

Anxiety can create an overwhelming feeling of uncertainty, worry and sometimes panic. We all feel anxiety from time to time which is quite normal. Usually this comes and goes and is in context with the uncertainty and the unique challenges of life. The uncomfortable experience of anxiety brings on a range of normal fight/flight types of symptoms including heart racing, butterflies or discomfort in the stomach or solar plexus area, maybe even a shortness of breath, feeling weak and shaky, or an inability to concentrate. Anxiety Disorder is where the anxiety is more severe and persistent, often with very debilitating longer lasting symptoms. A person may feel a sense of impending doom, dread, or intense fear and panic. Their heart may

12

Supernal Magazine

be suddenly pounding, they may have chest pains and, at the same time, it may be difficult to breathe, they may experience numbness and tingling feelings in the body, as well as many other very uncomfortable symptoms. Anxiety Disorder can prevent people from living well, feeling secure and achieving their life dreams and goals. People who experience anxiety naturally want to avoid situations that they believe perpetuates it. The factors that contribute to anxiety can include, but are not limited to, genetics,

biochemical factors, personality, hormonal imbalances, trauma and major stressors and substance abuse. Most often it can be a combination of these things. Anxiety Disorder is diagnosed when there are persistent and specific debilitating

symptoms that last longer than six months. There are different types of anxiety disorders including: Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD): Persistent and excessive worry that lasts for six months or greater, about a variety of different topics and is out of proportion to the reality of situations. Persons have great difficulty controlling the anxiety and it can affect day to day function. Panic Disorder: Re-occurring, unexpected panic attacks with no known trigger which can come on suddenly. The person can then experience ongoing fear for recurring episodes. They may seek to avoid situations where they may have experienced anxiety or panic in the past. Specific Phobias: An intense and often specific irrational fear of situations, events, objects for example; fear of flying, snakes, spiders - which last for six months or more. Agoraphobia: Fear of places and situations that may lead to the feeling of being unable to escape and the feeling of panic, lasting for six months or more and out of proportion to the actual danger of a situation.

mental health Social Phobia: Intense fear of most social situations, out of proportion to actual threat and must be present for six months or more. (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Helping someone with anxiety Approach the person in a calm manner and ask if they know of anything that has helped them in the past. Some people have had anxiety and panic attacks for quite some time and are very familiar with strategies that can assist them.

Strategies to reduce anxiety Counting backwards slowly from 100. While breathing, visualise a past memory of an enjoyable experience like a holiday. Inhale and exhale slowly to the count of five. Sensory activities like, breathing in calming essential oils or listening to music.

Remind the person to breathe slowly and as deeply as they can manage. If you become concerned about the person’s ability to catch their breath, or they lose consciousness, please call 000 and ask for an ambulance immediately but stay with the person to monitor them.

Support Groups: These can be a great way to learn new skills related to reducing anxiety and meeting people who have understanding through similar lived experiences. Relaxation Training: Learning ways to relax and calm the body and mind. Dietary Modifications: Abstain from stimulants like coffee and mood altering substances like alcohol. Vitamin B can be of assistance also.

Ask what you can do to help. Reassure them you will stay with them as support and that anxiety usually improves over time and with support. Assist the person to feel more comfortable; maybe sitting down for example.

effective in desensitising a person to the stimulus that provokes specific phobias/ anxiety. It encourages a person to face their fears in a supportive environment.

Medications: Some medications can be very effective short term treatments used for anxiety disorder. Please discuss with a medical professional. Treatments available for Anxiety Disorder: Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT): A psychological treatment effective for people with anxiety disorders as it aims to reduce the repetitive and negative thoughts associated with anxiety. Brotherhood of Man In today’s world of the internet and social media platforms, there seems to be greater connectivity. It is certainly a wonderful thing to be able to make connections and converse with people from all around the globe. However, this is only a surface connectivity, superficial compared with real, in-person engagements on a social level. We are predominantly social animals; we thrive and grow on a psychological level when we meet regularly with others. Through these connections we often create a real rapport with people with whom we may have shared experiences and likeminded goals. Meeting up with others in a small or large group setting, offers the chance to meet new people from diverse backgrounds

14

Supernal Magazine

and expand our own knowledge of the world and our fellow man! This connectivity has proven to show that young men, who play for local sporting clubs or who are involved with organisations such as scouts, become more socially aware and adept via the social aspect of their respective clubs. What about the working men? The stay at home fathers? The retired?

By the way, I am not discounting the need for us all to be involved with social activities and groups. My wife is a member and current president of a local CWA and has recently taken up a Martial Arts class, both of which support her need for social interaction. However, as this column is predominantly aimed at ‘men’s mental health’, we’ll just stick to the boy’s clubs. There is nothing wrong with meeting a few of the lads down at the local for a catch up and a drink, It’s not exactly my preference, as I had never seen it as productive, which is probably why, in my younger years, I became involved in the Rockabilly scene - cars and dancing. Now, in my more mature years, I see the value in such social interactions, a chance for men to get together and talk to each other.

“The next generation of men will have nowhere to socialise on this level in their later years.” I am grateful for the connections I made through the dance community and other clubs where I have been involved. I have made some lifelong friends, some of whom I may not converse with on a regular basis these days, but I know they would be there for me in a pinch. Can we say that about our social media friends? We probably can for a select few, most likely the select few with whom we have had actual in-person, social interactions.

mental health There is a plethora of social clubs out where men can be involved, but as membership numbers decline, due to lack of interest from younger men, they will become extinct. Sadly, many traditions will be lost and the next generation of men will have nowhere to socialise on this level later in life.

“We thrive and grow on a psychological level when we meet regularly with others.” The ‘Men’s Shed’, a relatively new organisation, is a wonderful idea for those who have a little time up their sleeves and want to work with traditional trades as a hobby, in a supporting environment while nurturing social relationships with their fellow members. It also goes to show that most men can’t just sit around and talk, they need to be ‘doing’ something. There is nothing wrong with that. When meeting new people and developing new friendships, it is easier to have some focal point, something to begin the conversation. Not all people have the same interests though, working with tools may not appeal to everyone but there are many different organisations out there, and most are desperate for new members. Think of it this way, you can support a local club or you can choose to become a member of a club and, as you support it, the club supports you. There are also lots of organisations that focus on helping the community through events probably the first that would

and charity. The Lions Club is come to many a person’s mind with Rotary, for the more business minded man. Freemasons is for those who wish to support their fellow man, for the religious, there are various church social groups and for the fit, many sporting groups.

“New hobbies and interests stimulate the mind and build new neural pathways.” These are just a few from the top of my head. The main point here is that there are many, many groups that will support you as an individual and provide real social interactions offering opportunities to form wonderful friendships. In this modern world of superficial

connectivity, it is important to get back to real, tangible relationships. My advice would be to figure out what interests you have or, would like to nurture, and investigate local social groups in that area of interest. Most will welcome new members enthusiastically. New hobbies and interests stimulate the mind and build new neural pathways. Combine with that meeting new people and sharing the experience of social interactions and you have a recipe for good mental health! ESPecially best wishes, The Mentalist.

Supernal Interview

Major Brendan Nottle by Anthony Kilner

Sitting Bourke Street across the road from the heart of the Salvation Army, I pondered the plight of Melbourne’s increasing homelessness problem. It was a brisk winter morning and as I sat at the café waiting for my meeting with Major Brendan Nottle, stalwart for the Salvos and all-round nice guy, I considered if I could sleep rough when I can’t stand the cold – I shivered at that thought!

“…we have seen a major increase in the numbers of women and children.” It’s Monday the 5th August and the official start of Homelessness Week in Australia. Homelessness is a huge Australia-wide problem that is not an easy one to tackle, as it involves governments at local and state level and the city councils. It also involves big charities such as the Salvation Army, as well as many smaller ones, more importantly though, it involves the whole community. Brendan, a recognised Melbourne personality for change, has been

18

Supernal Magazine

involved with the Salvation Army for around 22 years. He felt a calling to work with people needing help because of his family. They had needed help and the Salvos had stepped in and his life changed. Brendan walked across the road and my education into the issues around homelessness began. Q: What sort of demographics do you see in the Salvation Army café? A: Predominantly, in the past our services have been working with Caucasian males from their 40s to 60s. Over the last couple of years though, we have seen a major increase in the numbers of women and children. Add to that, several years ago we only saw a few indigenous people, around 10 or so and these days we are seeing 50 to 60. There is a growing population of homeless here in Melbourne and around the country.

Q: With women making up nearly half of the homeless population do you get an understanding of why? A: To understand that I want to go back a bit. We have around 46 houses around Melbourne working with Magpie House, which mostly catered for men. Nowadays, we have around 23 of those houses taken up by women and children. In fact, we have 30 children in the program. These are women escaping family violence. What often happens is, when the violence blows up, the woman escapes. Many times, they will stay at family and friends (this support often dries up with time), in the hope that things might settle down at home and they can go back. Often things don’t. They then end up on the streets with no-where else to go. One issue here is, that by staying in friends and families homes short

interview term and then ending up homeless, they find they are not eligible for domestic violence crisis services because they are regarded as homeless. If they had gone straight to the domestic violence crisis services it would then have been a different story. There is a gap in the system here.

help the increasing number of women and children in this situation.

50s and 60s are the fastest growing group of homeless people.

We have employed a women’s worker to support the women and children in that program while continuing to implement change to become more focussed on meeting the future needs of this group.

Q: What would be some advice to offer everyday people looking at the homeless people around the country?

“Nowadays we have around 23 of those houses taken up by women and children.”

Q: Has the increased indigenous population has an impact on services?

Our housing program was designed around predominantly rough sleepers in Melbourne and we’ve had to modify it to

A: In a way yes, as it means more people needing help and no, as we are fully committed to helping all homeless people with a strong focus on those within the Melbourne city areas. Q: What would be one of the significant factors in understanding why this crisis is occurring? A: There are several factors. The main reason is the lack of affordable homes and rentals. We have met many women 40+ who have lost a partner or been divorced and left with no money to buy or rent. There’s a problem around developers building four bedroom houses in that, they are too large and unaffordable. Ideally, they only want a one bedroom unit that is sustainable. According to the 2016 Census, women in their

A: I think probably the first thing is don’t judge. It’s really easy to do that with people that are sleeping rough or homeless, moving between family or friend houses. What we’d encourage people to do, where appropriate, is have a conversation with the person that’s homeless and understand their story!

“I think probably the first thing is don’t judge.” This is just a snippet from the interview with Brendan. ...to Integrity in Homelessness by Susan Carew - Homeless Lives Matter Homelessness... ‘Where do I start?’ I woke up this morning crying with frustration. Recently, I had spent time with a homeless woman on the street. She was 32 years old, and in serious trouble. She was lying in a sleeping bag on a street bench in Prahran, on a cold rainy day. The rain was like tears, reinforcing the sorrow of her dilemma and so many others unseen.

20

I told her I was homeless for 2 years now. I tried to reach her. I told her I want to do something for the homeless. I said to her, “I see you, I value you,” and I told her that she is worthy. Her family were not in Melbourne. I explored options of homeless shelters Supernal Magazine

with her, but to no avail she didn’t feel safe there. I asked if she would like a coffee. Sitting with her, she told me that a psychic had told her she would die at 32; and she believed it. I told her, “They are not always right.” That I knew of people who had believed they would die and didn’t. I wanted her to know I cared. If nothing else, that much is important, as so many people walk past who don’t. Another lady said people had tried to help this woman - the police, ambulance, churches - they hadn’t been able to. I walked back to her and gave her my amethyst crystal bracelet; amethyst

is about inner peace. I watched her put it on her wrist and said, ‘You can feel it when you are stressed, it will bring you peace.’ It is very upsetting, as I feel the human connection to her. She is so vulnerable, and where is our community? Where is the love in this? I see my own, but I am one.

feature

I wanted to give support, as I know how it feels to be trapped in a problem, alone with nowhere to go.

“I saw that no one cared about my situation.” My story is about the homeless, not just me, but all the homeless, as they are me. There are over 116,000 of us. Many are isolated, outside of groups that would take them in and care for them. We are in a democratic country with plenty of money yet we do have cultural attitudes of ‘you made your bed’, ‘get a job’, ‘be self-reliant’, ‘bludger’ – all platitudes that do nothing to empower the homeless. These statements are a form of denial, where many opt out of shared responsibility. They cast the homeless person as the problem, victim blaming them. What if it is your reaching out that actually saves you? What if you find meaning in changing another life by kindness, care, empathy and empowerment? As the cliché goes, If not you, then who? If not now, then

when? That is not to say people do not isolate, they do (I did). Yes, they can be angry, unhelpful, suffer from addictions and be selfish like anyone else. The first time I was homeless was for 2 years in Perth, where I couldn’t afford to rent my own place. I had to find house sits to have shelter. I was on Centrelink at the time and this, at the very least, gave me access to food and services. I was trying to establish my peace education work and clowning, but realised I must have a network. I learned that a network takes time to develop and you find many closed doors. Finding work with no fixed address isn’t so easy either.

“I suddenly realised that I was a World Peace Clown, and this changed my life.” The second time was in Melbourne. I’d been grappling with a long term dispute, and the desire to suicide. I experienced covert bullying and subtle sexual harassment at work. I experienced the silent treatment and this created

more personal confusion and the strong need to resolve the problem. I am trained in mediation but soon confronted mindsets who didn’t care at all about my situation. I was, as they say, ‘stuck between a rock and a hard place’.

“My training and experience in Peace was the very foundation I required in order to survive and thrive.” I was confronted by this behaviour, but found my values didn’t allow me to let go. I have a very strong sense of equality and dignity. I believed in an egalitarian society and I was taught if you have a problem, fix it - but I was confronted with those who saw the world differently. I was driven to the point of wanting to end my life. No-one cared about my situation. I experienced the hard edge of indifference to suffering, which pained me more deeply. No matter what I said, no matter what

22

Supernal Magazine

I explained, no matter my own personal exposure, all was met with silence. This conflict escalated into a legal matter; they escalated the problem based on selfinterest as they refused to acknowledge two sides and deal with staff behaviours. This escalation deepened my anguish, despair and the desire to suicide. I became homeless around the same time. I was evicted (the landlord breached bylaws) on the same day as the court hearing. I had no money, I was unable to gain legal aid and was up against a well-resourced legal team. The desire to end my life was directly related to the sense of powerlessness; it was a harrowing time!

“To become the hapless fool is the real freedom.” What I had faced was a form of narcissistic personality disorder, which I believed to be dangerous to other women. I felt a deep sense of social responsibility

for them, something those in management couldn’t understand. I saw my humanity in others and understood the virtue of ‘we are each other’s keepers’. I was unable to walk away until I understood the drivers behind power. I had to know the truth. I was in for the long haul, whether I liked it or not. Life had plans for me. However, my training and experience in Peace was the very foundation I required in order to survive and thrive. Peace is the way. I sought to understand real Peace. Homelessness helped me understand conflict, abuse, mental health and suicide. Prior to homelessness I was learning about peace, in myself and the world. teaching Peace. Everything

feature in my life changed work, partner, home - all disappeared. I found myself at a cross roads - I asked myself ‘what do I truly want?’ Peace was the only word that came up. I Googled Peace and found a Peace Studies Course at La Trobe University. I also found Patch Adams and Helen Caldicott.

“What if you find meaning in changing another life by kindness, care , empathy, and empowerment?” I decided to meet Helen and, it was this discussion that inspired me to study further. Peace Studies was a wonderful program. I was following my heart and, in particular, Mahatma Gandhi, who moved me deeply. The course awakened my life purpose. I suddenly realised that I was a World Peace Clown and this changed my life. I contacted the famous Clown Doctor, Patch Adams. To my surprise his brother, Wildman, rang me from Washington and invited me to Russia for their Healing with Humour tour.

I had to come up with $7,500 expenses. A woman who I had clowned with at Canberra Hospital became the benefactor; she and her mother-in-law paid for my trip. I discovered years later that the mother-in-law was the sister of Rupert Murdoch. I smiled. I found wisdom in the Fool’s Gold: I learned that unexpected miracles can happen! I didn’t know it at the time, but the Fool was to become my archetype. The Fool is symbolic of the Heroes journey. I learned trust to step off the cliff of uncertainty and see another step magically appear. I took a step to go to Russia, to bring joy to those disempowered and this changed yet again.

“Homelessness helped me understand conflict, abuse, mental health and suicide.” To become the hapless fool is the real freedom. It is to find the courage to love what you don’t love. Love is the doorway home to peace. Love is the answer. The homeless do not really want spare change

(coins), they want real change (love). This change requires us to look into the dysfunction, erroneous beliefs and imbalance which have caused homelessness. Gandhi envisages to: ‘Be the change you wish to see in the world’. I might not be able to change the world, but I can lead by example. I can change myself. Kind words are like a peace candle being passed from one to the other. Love makes the real difference in this world. Love is the way and the life. What do you choose? Your choice will literally change your world. Such is the Divine dichotomy; you cannot change the world yet you can change your world. Indeed, you are the world changing in every moment!

Melbourne’s Street Crew Homelessness Week 4th August to 10th August

By Celeste de Vis

It’s a Sunday morning and the energy levels are high! Parents and children from Rainbow Connections Youth and Family group are meeting up in Mornington, bound for a meeting with Street Crew Melbourne (SCM) – in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD. We have a big day ahead of us. Our bus is loaded with shopping trolleys and a large cart filled with food parcels. Everyone seems to be aware that this is a special day, and will be a meaningful undertaking. Our purpose is to meet up with some community workers from SCM who make up street-friendly food parcels and hand them out with kindness to people doing it tough on the streets. SCM has been operating for three and a half years. There was an initial start-up, called Street Church, before Brian took over the project, and Teriana joined soon after. Brian has experience working with homeless people, in America; supporting people aged between 16 to 25yrs living on the streets.

26

Supernal Magazine

Teriana now lives in Western Australia and has her own homelessness story being shared in this months’ issue of Supernal Magazine. Teriana helps with the social media side of things. Glenda joined SCM twelve months ago and is involved with the online media too. We arrived in Melbourne to a city was bustling with peeps that were enjoying the sunshine and free events being hosted. Before setting out, Brian, Glenda and Ron discussed the House Rules. Prior to arriving on the day, the families accepted and understood the Golden Rule: that their children were to be supervised by their parent or carer at all times.

When we approach people on the street, we approach them with a Pay it Forward mindset. We don’t approach them as though they are homeless and destitute.

A good ice breaker may be, “Do you know of someone who requires any help?” or “Do you know of someone that would like a food parcel?” The aim of today is to try and leave people feeling loved and respected. We then set off to an area where homeless people gather. We encountered all sorts of characters residing within laneways, side streets and main streets. People expressed joy reading the messages written by the children from Rainbow Connections, which were enclosed in the food parcels. There were several dogs to pat, even the opportunity to offer a food parcel containing dog food! Most people we encountered remained seated when we approached, or lay within their cosy blankets. This ‘power imbalance’ didn’t sit well with me. I felt an urge to get down to their level with them to hear their story. Some family members from Rainbow Connections thought about questions to

interview ask SCN in order to better understand our homelessness crisis in Australia.

Kobe Q: “How many people do you give out food parcels to?” A: “During the winter months, maybe up to 25 parcels on one afternoon. In the summer months, maybe up to 40 parcels in one afternoon.”

Isla Q: “How many people/ groups come out to volunteer with you on Sundays?” A: “Not many. Melbourne LGBTQIA Christian group, a Vegetarian group, Rainbow Connections….”

Tiana Q: “Are there many homeless kids and children?” A: “Yes. However, homeless youth under 18 years are generally picked up by services and housed. This keeps them safe from harm. Sadly, it is very common for LGBTQIA youth to live on the streets due to parental rejection, because of their gender or sexuality.”

Charlotte Q: “Do you see many homeless people with pets?”

A: “Yes, we see many people with pets, mostly dogs. We believe that a third of people receiving food parcels own a pet.”

Alicia Q: “How many homeless people regularly rely on you for survival?” A: “Not a lot of people rely on us, as our service is delivered fortnightly. Melbourne’s homeless people heavily rely on other services, such as the Salvation Army.”

Charlie Q: “Does anyone disrespect you when you are out giving food parcels?’ A: “Very rarely.”

Michelle Q: “How could we start up something like this on the Mornington Peninsula?” A: from Brian, “I will give you my contact number.”

Renae Q: “Do you come across homeless people who have a mental illness?” A: “Yes. We have met many people living on the streets that have addictions and suffer from poor mental health because of addiction.”

Celeste Q: “Do you see many women living on the streets?” A: “We do see women, but there are many more men than women. The streets are less safe for women. An example is, one day we were giving out free clothes. The women’s clothes were pretty and colourful. Not one woman chose to receive a garment, as they are aware that if they look attractive they could be a target of an attack on the street.” Street Crew Melbourne have a Facebook page where you can contact them to find out about them or organise a voluntary opportunity with them. facebook.com/ streetcrewmelbourne/

Homelessness In Focus

teriana - a story of survival As a part of covering the Changing Face of Homelessness, our own Celeste de Vis went out with Street Crew Melbourne (previously Street Church) and met with many homeless people to hand out food packs and chat with them about their story. Celeste suggested I ask Teriana, who is part of Street Crew, about her story of living on the street. It’s not a new story, but it’s very real - and unfortunately, strongly relates to the changing face of homelessness. Teriana was assigned male at birth, and family expectation wanted her to live as a male. However, there was always an inner conflict and as a child she prayed to God to make her “right”. Teriana eventually got married and had two beautiful children, but still desperately wanted her dreams to come true. Her words to me were, “Be careful what you wish for,

28

Supernal Magazine

it might just happen - but not the way you’d expect!” At the age of 34, Teriana started making the transition from male to female. As a trans-woman, her life in Western Australia changed dramatically. To cut a long story short, she was kicked out of the family home and told she would never have anything to do with her kids. She then relocated to

Melbourne, Victoria to get her life back on track. Family in Melbourne offered support, and Teriana started making a new life for herself creating her home-based business and falling in love with a special someone. While life wasn’t perfect, Teriana pushed on - she had been diagnosed with gender dysphoria, and had to go through the hurdles of gender re-assignment surgery, which was a tough gig years ago. After coming home from that surgery, her life took a massive hit she never saw coming. The partner she loved totally rejected her and broke her heart. There was physical and mental abuse, theft and degradation to the extreme. Finally, Teriana packed her

in-focus “Teriana went into survival mode... It was hard to be humble and accept the situation; to go from having food and material things, to having nothing at all.” car, took what valuable items she could, shut down the services on the house and drove off into the streets of Melbourne. She was stressed and embarrassed to tell her family as they had been very supportive in the past, so she started living the lie ‘of all being well’ which led to severe depression. Teriana went into survival mode. She did what other homeless people were doing – she began begging on the streets for money, food and clothing. It was hard to be humble and accept the situation; to go from having food and material things to having nothing at all. Teriana had a difficult time proving to Centrelink that she was in trouble. Because she had run away from the situation, a home and a business, with no records to help prove what had happened, the situation became even more stressful. Scared and naive, Teriana was living on the street, not knowing where to go or who to turn to. Trust was difficult for both homeless men and women, with the frightening aspects of theft (phones, ID and more) and safety. Living this way, amongst other homeless people, couch surfers, drugs and alcohol abuse, mental illness, prostitution, loss of hope and dignity, finally brought her

back to the total loss of faith which had started back in Western Australia.

“…she had been diagnosed with gender dysphoria and went through the hurdles of gender re-assignment surgery…” Life finally changed one night, when a lady called Cathy knocked on her car door and, fighting down the fear, Teriana spoke to Cathy, who offered her accommodation. She helped Teriana connect with the right services and support to crawl her way back from the depths of depression. She retrained and took a job in aged care, which she did for many years until her body gave out from a workplace accident. Also, the mental abuse of being a transwoman and not accepted by her working team mates, led

to yet more misery and pain. But life moved on, and the mentally tough Teriana, with renewed faith, went back to WA to move on in her life. She re-connected with her children in a special and beautiful way. Teriana now has grandchildren to love and share life with plus a partner to whom she is now married. Life really has offered Teriana an incrediblett journey. There are several points to her story; letting go of pride, not being afraid to ask for help and seek out the right people. She is also very much about giving back and, while still connected with Street Crew Melbourne, she is now continuing to help others in Western Australia. Teriana has offered her story to help people understand there is a way through the depths of despair, to find love of self and others, and to create the life we truly desire.

AIS Interview By Anthony Kilner

V

There’s no place like home! V

Supernal Magazine attended an informative discussion called ‘There’s No Place Like Home’ hosted by the AIS (Australian Intercultural Society) at Salvation Army (SA) HQ in Bourke Street, to bring awareness to the plight of homelessness in Melbourne and Australia during Homelessness week. The Panel On the night, the panel was introduced by Phoebe Avenell, Senior Operations Manager for the SA and the moderator was Ali Moore, journalist and broadcaster for the ABC. The first panellist was David Emerson, from Collingwood FC’s Magpie Nest Housing Project, which partners with the Salvos to provide longand short-term affordable

30

accommodation. They also provide management support with a dedicated women’s case worker, the café, annual events and fund raising. Next, was Councillor Beverley Pinder, who chairs Melbourne City Council’s Homelessness Advisory Committee and is a Patron of the Father Bob Maguire Foundation. She helped set up the funding for the night café at the Salvos headquarters and the Street Kids Program plus many other programs of support. The ‘Lived Experience’ representatives on the panel were the phenomenal Angie Jackson and Trevor Wolf; such fascinating speakers. Both are currently living in the SA/Magpie Nest Housing Program and working with the SA providing support

based on their own experiences. Next was Anthony McEvoy, who has run the SA homelessness program for several years using his 25 years’ experience in the industry, including working in refugee camps overseas. Lastly, was Margaret Stewart, Executive Director Mission at St Vincent’s Hospital, offering incredible support to the Salvos by providing a nurse 5 days a week and so much more!

“It needs direct connection to the people by asking a very simple question – ‘What is it you need and how can we address it?’”

mini feature Many topics were passionately discussed; however several key factors impacted me. Firstly, the growing rate of homelessness in women. This has risen to 42 percent across Australia (nearly 49,000 women) plus children. Apparently, many women struggle to ask for help due to pride. We were told the best approach is to listen to people’s stories and offer a suggestion or two to help guide them to the correct available services.

“People struggle with finding the right services to access help.” The second point was the struggle for many homeless people to identify and access the correct support services. Without someone to guide them, it becomes a mine field. This is where the various organisations like the Salvos, St Vincent’s, Anglicare and other agencies can and do help. My take on the events of the evening is that the model is broken. It needs redressing from the ground up and this was certainly the opinion shared by some of the panellists too. The cost of living is rising, the cost of housing and land is

rising and the cost of rent is rising. The cost of doing something, like employing case-workers and other staff permanently to deal with the growing crisis, is not being addressed. There is funding available for only a few staff currently, but as was discussed, it’s only for up to 3 years maximum and many of the workers don’t have any job security because their contracts could be for as little as 12 months. Of course, it also takes months of work to apply for grants to stay employed. The Collingwood Football Club hosted a telephone event raising over a million dollars for Magpie Nest. This money goes directly into all facets of helping people into houses but it’s simply not enough. Melbourne City Council runs programs partnered with St Vincent’s Hospital and other organisations that also help hundreds of people every year. The Salvation Army has its Night Café supported by Magpie Nest Melbourne City Council, which helps feed, and works with, around 170 people a day! Dealing with homelessness is not as simple as just throwing money at it. It needs direct connection to the people by asking a very simple question

– ‘What is it you need and how can we address it?’ Once this is genuinely understood, then a new model can be created that sees all charities, agencies, governments -local and federal, councils and the general community coming together in a united effort to reduce or eradicate homelessness completely.

“This has risen to 42 percent of the total in Australia (nearly 49,000 women) plus children.” The system will require review, because the Changing Face of Homeless is exactly that - changing. It’s as complex as it seems simple. Issues surrounding homelessness include, the rise of domestic violence, drugs, alcohol, addictions such as gambling, the loss of family and loved ones, the loss of a vital income through job redundancy and the list goes on. The most reassuring thing is that, here in Melbourne, and around the country, there are some amazing people working hard in difficult circumstances to rectify the system. We wish them all support and kudos for their amazing efforts!

Discovering Ayurveda By Liesl Horne

Kicharee a one pot dish to cleanse and restore…

Long hailed for its cleansing and nourishing qualities, Kicharee, pronounced ‘kichuh-ree’ originates from the Sanskrit word ‘khichcha’ meaning ‘mixed or mixture.’ This restorative one pot dish, consisting of mung beans and rice dates back thousands of years to the Asian subcontinent. Traditionally used throughout India for those convalescing and for anyone wanting to cleanse and strengthen their digestive system, it continues to be revered for the health benefits it has to offer. Kicharee can be creatively adapted to suit individual tastes by using a wide range of ingredients, however, if your purpose is to cleanse and restore, you are best to eat it as plain and soup like as possible. You can begin to introduce additional ingredients for texture and flavour as your digestive capacity strengthens.

34

Supernal Magazine

One of the outstanding nutritional benefits of Kicharee is its complete protein content which helps to regulate blood sugar levels. As a result, your sustained energy allows you to maintain your daily routine whilst also resting and replenishing your digestive system. This simple meal of mung beans and basmati rice is deeply nourishing and satisfying. Mung beans are often referred to as ‘Golden Gram,’ ‘Black Gram’ and ‘Green Gram.’ It is the only bean that is classed as ‘Vata friendly’ because it is the least likely to cause digestive gas. Split mung beans are a lighter and easier version to digest than the whole bean and take less time to cook. The green outer husk is removed, and then they are split to reveal the yellow colour inside. It’s a good idea to soak them first, especially if

they are whole, making them softer and more easily absorbed. As well as providing an excellent source of protein, they are also full of dietary fibre which helps to facilitate the detoxing process by removing toxins from the bowel. This is further supported with their astringent and drying qualities having a cleansing effect on the tissues. The magnesium and iron content of mung beans helps to alleviate fatigue and anaemia, whilst supporting nerve transmission, heart health and blood circulation. Every region in India has its own unique version of Kicharee. It is also recognised as Khichdi, Kichadi and Kitchari. There are endless variations of this everyday staple with cultural influences relating to different countries, tastes and local ingredients. The British, for example adapted it in the 19th century by adding boiled fish, cayenne pepper and eggs which they called ‘Kedgeree.’ Ayurveda recommends eating according to your constitution - including the

health and wellbeing most nourishing foods suited to your individual nature. Kicharee is good for all three Doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha (information about the doshas can be found in my previous articles) making it an ideal meal to include in your diet to build strength and vitality whilst also easily digested.

qualities may be just what you need. Try it for breakfast, lunch or dinner. It tastes wholesome, feels comforting and is an excellent example of food as medicine. It’s also super easy to make!

Preparing Kicharee:

1/2 cup of yellow split mung beans or whole mung beans soaked

Cooking the rice and mung beans together forms a classic ‘one pot dish’ that is easily adjusted to suit your personal taste and nutritional requirements. Mild spices such as coriander, fennel seeds, turmeric and cumin are a good choice to start with as they help to kindle the digestive fire known as ‘Agni’, which helps to digest our food. If you prefer your Kicharee hotter and spicier, you can add ginger, cayenne or black pepper. Whenever you are feeling out of balance, making adjustments to your diet is essential to restoring your wellbeing. Kicharee, with its calming and soothing

Basic Kicharee Recipe: 1/2 cup of basmati rice

3 cups of water A pinch of salt for seasoning Optional: add two teaspoons of Ghee once cooked. Serves 4 You can double the ingredients to make a larger quantity. It is best eaten freshly cooked but can be stored overnight in the fridge.

Once you have tasted this simple Kicharee, try experimenting with adding the seasonal vegetables, spices and fresh herbs suitable for your constitution. Vata Dosha Choose from carrots, asparagus, zucchini, green beans, peas, spinach, pumpkin and squash. Pitta Dosha Choose from asparagus, celery, green beans, zucchini, any leafy greens and peas. Kapha Dosha Choose any vegetable that is not too juicy or sweet such as pumpkin and zucchini. Enjoy your renewed sense of vitality!

Method: Rinse the rice and the mung beans until the water runs clear. If you have time to soak them this will save on cooking time and make them more easily digested. Add to a medium sized saucepan and cover with water. Bring to a boil and then simmer until tender, with the lid partially on for approximately 20 - 30 minutes. Season lightly.

Reflections: Jane Offer

Knowledge with Purpose Our brains are full of information that has been gathered from many different sources; some are relevant and some not, some accurate and some not and much of it is of no use to us whatsoever. As these voices whirl around in our head and we try to make decisions based on this information, we lose sight of the fact that we have our own inner wisdom. Not a wisdom that is passive, but a practical knowing with ethical purpose that learned knowledge cannot possibly offer.

moral compass guiding us towards authentic thinking and ethical behaviour. It directs how we treat others and how we treat ourselves. Traditionally, we believe that experience and age teach us wisdom. However, whilst some experiences nurture wisdom others do the exact opposite, often confusing us and breaking our trust in our thought processes. We may work towards developing traits like loyalty, perseverance, mindfulness and kindness but we need conscious wisdom to underpin that learning. This will clarify our aims and intentions and clearly see their purpose and benefits.

Wisdom in action encourages us to think things through carefully, to listen to the voice within and to act from our heart. It is a knowing We begin to see that most that matters, allowing us to situations are grey rather make balanced choices in line with our soul purpose. Plato believed that wisdom was an abstract, a theory, but his pupil Aristotle disagreed. He believed that wisdom is a universal and practical skill which is a

than black and white and what may be right for one may not be so for another. This clarity not only helps us to override the learned, inflexible rules that prevent access to our inner knowing but also to find the balance between the conflict and constraints of any situation allowing a mutually beneficial conclusion.

Our ability grows with experience to see every situation from another person’s perspective. Each situation has many facets; we each translate events in our own way, seeing it through our own eyes but, with understanding, we can see our translation may not be accurate or even close to the truth. It helps us to be non-judgemental or to expect something

from another that may not be within their skillset. It develops empathy and enables us to make decisions that serve everyone’s need in a balanced way. We grasp our ability to respond, rather than react, to emotional stimuli. We can feel our emotion from a detached viewpoint and not allow it to drive our reason and judgement down a dark path. We can ‘feel’ what is right for us allowing us to act in a measured and peaceful manner. We hold no judgement on whether another’s feelings are right or wrong, simply knowing that this is their understanding. When we deal with people from a point of anger or frustration, we only generate more of the same but when we approach people with a solid calmness, we can achieve beneficial outcomes. Our wisdom attracts experiences that are for our optimum growth.

Approaching these experiences with honesty and clear listening, really hearing the message behind the experience, we enrich the experience and grow from it. We develop beyond the ability to be perceptive about others; we develop

the capacity to really see ourselves. We acquire the skill to act with deliberation, perception, ethicality, mindfulness and empathy. When we use our emotions as a trusted tool, learning from past experiences, noting our thought patterns,

we can clearly see our own motives, admit our failures and discern what has worked, what hasn’t and why. Life is all about the practice of living; committing to the journey of discovery and uncovering the hidden gems we hold so deeply inside. Wisdom in action has no boundaries; it does not preclude any individual from attaining it by circumstance or design. It enriches our lives and influences how we portray our uniqueness to the world by reminding us that in doing so we are helping others as much as we are helping ourselves. It is simply a virtue that we each have with the ability and the deep inner desire to discover for ourselves. These are some of my thoughts from the 7 Keys to Oneness – a Course in Living in Wholeness that I run and thought it would be lovely to share this wisdom with our readers.

Health, Well-Being, & Holistic Healing Arts By Joti Gore

Coping with the Season of S.A.D. S.A.D. or Seasonal Affective Disorder is a type of depression that is connected to changes in the seasons as it happens each year at the same time. The symptoms of S.A.D. occur in the winter months and typically make people feel moody, chronically fatigued and energy drained. According to the Mayo Clinic, S.A.D. happens less often in the summertime. Usually, the symptoms dissipate during the sunny weather of spring and summer. The Mayo Clinic states, the signs and symptoms of S.A.D. may include:

• Feeling depressed most of the day, nearly every day • Losing interest in activities you once enjoyed • Having low energy • Having problems with sleeping • Experiencing changes in your appetite or weight • Feeling sluggish or agitated • Having difficulty concentrating • Feeling hopeless, worthless, or guilty • Having frequent thoughts of death or suicide Other possible symptoms specific to Autumn and Winter S.A.D., often called Winter Depression, are craving carbohydrates, weight gain, oversleeping and low energy. The actual cause of S.A.D. is still unknown however, there are several factors that are thought to play a role. Lack of exposure to sunlight in the Autumn and Winter may have a profound impact on disrupting your circadian rhythm which is your body’s internal clock. The serotonin levels, a neurotransmitter that affects your mood, may drop and your pattern of

38

Supernal Magazine

melatonin which influences the mood and sleep patterns may be interrupted. There are factors that may increase the possibility of this disorder affecting you such as family history, having major depression or bipolar disorder and living far from the equator creating decreased sunlight and longer days. Who does S.A.D. affect the most? In the past, Seasonal Affective Disorder was not taken very seriously. However, it is noted that S.A.D. affects younger adults’ more than older adults and more women are diagnosed than men. Perhaps the reason for this statistic is that more women go to the doctor. These are some complications that may occur to indicate that you must seek help: • School or work problems • Social withdrawal • Suicidal thoughts or behaviour • Substance abuse

health and wellbeing • Other mental health disorders like anxiety or eating disorders. When should you see a GP or mental health professional for diagnosis? It is a part of life to have ups and downs and feel a myriad of feelings. However, if you feel unmotivated and down for days without end, especially if you find you don’t enjoy the things you normally enjoy, it is time to see a physician. It is crucial if the feelings affect your sleep patterns, suicidal thoughts occur and you use alcohol or drugs for comfort. The evaluation for S.A.D. is difficult because other types of depression or conditions have similar symptoms. The examination for S.A.D. usually includes a physical because depression can be connected to a physical health problem, lab test perhaps to examine the CBC (Complete Blood Count) or look at the function of the thyroid, or use the DSM-5 Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders to search for criteria. How is S.A.D. treated in traditional and alternative medicine? Traditional treatment may consist of medications, psychotherapy, and phototherapy or light therapy. What is light

therapy? Light Therapy is exposing you to light by sitting in a special bright light box that mimics natural outdoor light. Phototherapy seems to alter the serotonins. It is usually the place to start and has been found effective in a few days to a few weeks. The second line of treatment is medications. In the case of severe symptoms, antidepressants like SSRI’s, Wellbutrin, Lexapro, or Alpenzin are prescribed to allay S.A.D. It usually takes several weeks to begin to notice the benefits of the antidepressants. Another approach is Psychological Therapy or Talk Therapy, a type of cognitive behavioural therapy that can assist in changing negative thoughts, reducing avoidance behaviour and over-scheduling activities and learning how to deal with stress. The alternative medicinal approach or holistic medicinal approach is mind body connection techniques like a physical yoga practice, meditation, walking meditations, getting outside, pranayama or

breathing techniques, guided imagery, Reiki, music or art therapy. In alternative medicine there are herbal remedies, supplements like 5HTP or melatonin and many other options to aid you during the winter. Understanding this can be confusing and add to the anxiety and stress to the point of choosing to do nothing at all. Try going to your local Naturopath for advice and connect to a team of people to help. Perhaps a Naturopath, a Yoga Practitioner, a Reiki practitioner and a Psychotherapist to do talk therapy, could be a good team to help get you through the dark days of winter. Whatever you choose, traditional, alternative, or the concatenational approach, remember to get outside, turn the lights on (instead of being in the dark room), exercise regularly (perhaps a class where there is community), or even take a trip to a sunny place during the winter time. Healthy Seasonal Foods By Jane Offer

He althy e atin g is a c hoice not a c hore ! Healthy eating is not a diet, implying we are being deprived, it is a simple idea that can be implemented into any family by eating fresh, unprocessed foods where possible, avoiding fast foods, drinking water or juiced fruit and vegetables instead of soft drink soda and cutting down on sugary snacks. “Healthy eating is a choice not a chore!” After all, we put the correct fuel in our vehicles to obtain optimum performance so why wouldn’t we do that for our body? Here are some suggestions.

Fennel Liquorice flavoured fennel is one of those vegetables that you either love or hate! It is a ‘pretty’ vegetable with its pure looking white

flesh, feathery green leaves and flowers that produce its valuable seeds. All parts of fennel are edible, including the flowers and are packed with essential vitamins and nutrients that provide high levels of dietary nitrates and is a natural source of estrogen. Historically, practitioners used fennel in natural remedies and Pliny (AD 2379), the Roman author of The Naturalis Historie, recorded his observations that snakes, after shedding their skins, ate and rubbed against fennel because it was able to improve their eyesight. There is a connection, as fennel contains Vitamin A, vital for eye health and, when the seeds are steeped in hot water for 20 minutes or so, the liquid can be used to soothe eye irritation. Fennel, Foeniculum vulgare, belongs to the Umbelliferae family and is a crunchy relation of parsley, carrots,

40

dill and coriander. It is multipurposed and can be used as a wonderful addition to fresh salads, smoothies, soups, stir-fry, potatoes and other vegetable dishes. Scientifically, it has been shown that, aside from being highly nutritious, both fresh fennel and fennel seeds are low in calories and provide important nutrients, such as Vitamin C, calcium, magnesium, potassium and manganese. All of which are important to provide antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects, immune stimulation, enzyme activation, metabolism, cellular protection, bone development, blood sugar regulation and wound healing. “Fennel is one of those vegetables that you either love or hate!”

Fennel Tea

Recipe:

According to herbalists, fennel seed is an effective aid to digestion. It can help the smooth muscles of the gastrointestinal system relax and reduce gas and bloating. In fact, tinctures or teas made from fennel seeds can be used to treat stomach muscle spasms caused by irritable bowel syndrome, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease and other conditions affecting the gastrointestinal system.

Peel and slice a quince, an apple and a pear.

A quick fix for indigestion is to chew a few fennel seeds. Fennel Tea Recipe: Take 1 teaspoon fennel seeds per cup and add boiling water. Do not boil the seeds as this kills all the nutritional value. Cover and leave to rest for 10 minutes. Drink the pale-yellow tea after meals. Fennel Tea will aid digestion, can reduce acne, improve weight loss, regulates blood pressure and reduces water retention.

Quince The quince originated in the Eurasian area, including Uzbekistan, Armenia, Turkey, Hungary, Macedonia and other nearby regions and is of the Rosaceae family,

Place in a saucepan with a little cold water. Add sultanas or raisins, chopped dried figs and dates, some walnuts or almonds. which also includes pears and apples. It is a yellowgreen fruit that is a great source of dietary fibre, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. The fruit has a very high concentration of vitamin C, calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium and copper.

Alternatively, add a berry mix of raspberries, strawberries and blueberries. Bring up to heat and simmer until the fruit feels soft and firm (not soggy). Serve warm or cold with natural yoghurt.

“The health benefits of Quince include aiding in weight loss...” The health benefits of quince include aiding in weight loss, improving digestive health, reducing cholesterol and boosting the immune system. It also prevents gastrointestinal diseases, soothes inflammation, improves the health of your skin, decreases blood pressure, prevents allergic reactions and stimulates circulation in the cardiovascular system. Add this beautiful fruit to create a yummy and nutritious breakfast compote. Jane Offer

Why Your Offers Aren’t Selling Dr. Brooklyn Storme PhD

As a Business Coach, one of the challenges that clients often seek my assistance for is that of closing the sale. It seems like such a difficult thing to do. Take David for example. He was an online business coach and he’d put together a number of offers, none of which were selling. Whenever he’d put a program up for sale, he’d hear crickets. It was defeating. Bronwyn had similar problems. She’d create these amazing programs for women to build their confidence - she’d promote them and, just like David, would hear crickets. These two clients are not alone and there are reasons why the offers aren’t selling. So, I’ll break down my sales process here and hopefully it will help you in your business too. Firstly, before you sell anything, you need to build an audience. This is really important because without one, you won’t have

44

Supernal Magazine

potential clients. No one is going to buy from someone they’ve never heard of, never seen and generally just don’t know. Secondly, you have to understand your audience. Why are they with you? Why are they reading your content? Why are they following your Facebook page? What’s prompting them to go and check out your website? Understanding your audience will help you to create offers for products and services that they really want. Thirdly, understanding your audience means going really deep and developing your version of something called a client avatar. This is not like the movie by the same name. A client avatar is a story about your ideal client. Who are they? Where do they live? What is their annual income? Are they married or single? What kind of car do they drive? The reason that it’s important to develop an avatar is because it

business becomes a really easy way to plan offers when you can bring that story to mind. Fourthly, know what they want. I’ve seen this happen so many times. My clients put out offers and no one buys them, leaving my clients scratching their head as to why. They question their ability to sell but that’s not the problem. They question the quality of their offer, but that’s not the problem either. The reason no one bought it was because no one wanted it. You didn’t ask them what they want or need. Being an entrepreneur is such a rollercoaster and one of the things that

keeps our energy up, is the passion we bring to our role. We love what we do and as novices, we create from the heart without doing the ground work first. We can think that because we are in love with what we are putting out there in the world, that everyone else will be too; how could they not? But the reality is that people don’t necessarily want the things that light you up. They want their problem solved. They want you to understand their problem, come up with a solution and present it to them in ways that are really accessible. That’s when you’ll start selling. Because my background is in the health and

wellness industry, many of my clients are coaches, therapists, private practice owners, counsellors, social workers, healers and so on. They have a really hard time wrapping their head around the idea of selling. They tell me it feels uncomfortable, that they don’t like asking for money and that the financial transaction doesn’t sit well with them. This mindset stops them from having a profitable business. It’s okay to ask for payment. There’s a saying that goes, ‘transformation is in the transaction’ meaning that, when clients make a payment or investment, they are more likely to experience benefit from it. The other point to mention, is that without money coming in and going out, you don’t have a business – you have a hobby. It’s safe for you to earn money, it’s acceptable for you earn money and guess what? The money you earn allows you to keep products in stock, to pay the rent, to invest in your own education or coaching so that you can keep providing your amazing services or products. Happy manifesting

An Objective Look at Subjective – The Vehicle Broken Down Our vehicles really do talk to us as much as we talk to them. I mean, how many of you out there have names for your car? How many of you talk to your car? When you wash your car is it like washing the dog or cat in that you talk about how clean she/he looks? Whilst you are driving, do you tap on the steering wheel to a tune and sing to your car? When Queen first sang I’m In Love With My Car by Roger Taylor from the Night of the Opera, I loved it! Cars and Queen, what a combo! Watch the Video Here: I believe cars have a soul; they are made up of

46

Supernal Magazine

products from the earth and, as such, have an energy that talks to us. They have an electrical system like we do; they have mechanical components like we do. They suffer from being fed bad fuel like we do and, if we treat the vehicle right; it will last for years – funnily enough like we will! Is anyone seeing the pattern here? In a dream or objectively, interpretation, as always, is the key. Here’s a real life example. I was driving in the right hand lane over a long bridge crossing a river and the right front wheel came off and rolled down the road

in front of me – very scary! This happened to me in my 4WD that I raced. Someone had tried to steal the wheels and removed most of the wheel nuts. It was lucky I didn’t lose all four wheels! Although scary, I really resonated with its meaning. The right wheel coming off was a representation that my direction at that time was in all sorts of trouble in regard to 4wdriving/Competition/ Writing, as this was a work vehicle. Crossing the bridge over the water symbolised that I was experiencing a great deal of emotion and this was huge, as I was taking the vehicle to be fixed after an accident while competing. My job was also changing, again emotional, as they owed me a lot of money (theft) and were refusing to pay. However the bridge meant I could get safely across - even though

dreams the wheel had literally fallen off! This experience illustrated to me that it was a scare but it didn’t cause any damage. So, even though my direction had changed, it didn’t negatively affect people around me. In short, things got sorted and my direction changed in a positive way. I still own the Nissan. It’ not on the road but boy, we shared some amazing times together and she holds a very special place in my heart. Basic Vehicle Interpretations I have selected a few vehicle interpretations from the book, Practical Mediumship – A Guide to Understanding Psychics, Mediums, Dreams and Physical and Metaphysical Information by Anthony Kilner. The Vehicle Broken Down Computer system and electrical system – This represents the brain and nervous system. Wheels and tyres – The ability to get around safely. Things to look at include bald tyres, off-road tread, sports tyres, or practical, no nonsense tyres. Suspension – The ability to move smoothly across the ground you are travelling

on. Sports suspension for greater on-road handling, soft suspension for a cosy life. Off-road suspension allows for safer agility in hard terrain. Engine – This references the heart of the vehicle. Engine oil – Oil represents the blood and flow of life. Cooling system – The ability to remain cool under pressure. Constantly flowing emotions that can leak or be contaminated. Gearbox – The legs and arms of the vehicle, the ability to move forward with a load. Differential – The ability to negotiate curves, corners easily. Brakes – Provides the ability to slow things down and stop safely. A reaction that stops the movement forward, to avoid accidents or compromising situations. Body work – How people perceive you, what you look like, presentation. Depending on the way the body work is done, it can also represent ego. Headlights – Provide the ability to see through dark times. Windscreen – Provides protection and a view into your direction.

Wiper blades – Provides the ability to clear away the grime and see things more clearly. Windscreen washers – The ability to clean and clear on an emotional level. Front driver’s seat – Comfort in your direction. Front passenger seat – The ability to see where you are going, but if someone else is driving then they are in control. There are so many vehicle components not listed here but I’m sure, with some imagination, people can work out what they mean subjectively. When applying these components with the vehicles as described in the July issue it’s amazing how, in real life and in dreams, our vehicles are always talking to us. Divine Time Mother Teresa We have begun a New Year cycle of time. Travelling through the Magnetic Moon of Purpose, the energy of Unification and Attraction signifies full steam ahead and into the eye of the perfect storm. We all know that with a storm brewing we need to batten down the hatches, clear the decks and align with our purpose. The best way is to navigate through the gate with the number eight (August), follow the stars, set intentions and goals and use the Universal Law of Attraction to aid and abet us on the journey. Should you be feeling funny in the tummy, be happy, don’t worry as it’s the laughter of the Buddha churning in the Solar Plexus; the power of joy. We are under the monarchy and highness of the Kin 14 Magnetic Wizard, identifying in human terms as the Dalai Lama (refer to the July Issue of Divine

48

Supernal Magazine

Time for explanation of this). Well known for his laughter, he is downloading in every giggle, a positive influence to bring about change from within. The month of July invites a new course and the infinite potential of August allows us to sail into port the fog-clearing and the Statue of Liberty becoming visible in the harbour. Come mid-September, I ask you to remember that without a little challenge in our lives we become stagnant like unused waters. “We all know that with a storm brewing we need to batten down the hatches…” The birth kin of Mother Teresa shines down like a bright light. Her vibrant energy of spirit as a petite woman in nun’s habit, did not habituate anything less than a fierce and forthright character who cajoled and used her personal galactic kin of number 40 Magnetic Sun to warm the hearts and

bank vaults of the very rich, in order to create a lot of foundational funding for the poor. It is entirely a synchronised system that allows us to see, by utilising the status of two such well known beings as the 14th Dalai Lama, and tiny Mother Teresa, the energy of the first two kin moons of this New Natural Time Year. We take heart and mind and follow their lead into the moons to come, with the Magnetic tone of Purpose and then the Lunar tone of Challenge. The eye of the storm may momentarily spin us round in the swirling waters, but freewill and liberty shall prevail, and you will travel forth on the waves and tides of forward positive e-motion. The 21st August begins a thirteen day period of life force energy as we enter the moon of Magnetic Sun, the ‘enlightened one’, and by the 23rd we enter the Lunar

divine guidance Moon of Challenge, the second of this new cycle. Each moon is a twenty-eight day period consisting of 4 x 7 kin (day) weeks. Earth’s natural time cycles are feminine and the number 28 flows with heart and healing, creating unified being and the original Garden of Eden. Earth is Mother and Goddess. “Her vibrant energy of spirit as a petite woman in nun’s habit did not habituate anything less than a fierce and forthright character…” The 260 day Tzolkin is a gestation period, and we evolve living 13 x 28 day moon cycles. This is creation and the synchronised basis of life on earth. Having fallen prey to the patriarchal way, twelve months tipped the

scales then we became imbalanced. How many days? Which month and where are we now? This is the mind set under false time. Instead of understanding our purpose, enjoying the challenge and being of service, finding our way via the totem and meaning of each moon, we are always emotive and with motive. We are trying not to capsize in our little boats livelihood and apart from glimpsing the Statue of Liberty, becoming doubtful we will be able to set foot on shore ground, or hit the heights like the Empire State Building (currently the 28th highest building in the world). Instead we come to earth, incarnate in order to voyage that which we planned in the ethers and wake up to find ourselves wanting.

“…like the maiden voyage to land on the boon docks of New York harbour, we feel like we are sinking midway.” In the July article I mentioned the Titanic. As we headed toward what we thought was our mission on earth, like the maiden voyage to land on the boon docks of New York harbour, we feel like we are sinking midway. Challenges can feel like crisis, overwhelming. Things get blown out of proportion simply because we are out of alignment with the natural cycles and time frequencies of Earth and her place in the planetary consciousness of all that is. Next year 2020, brings new vision. Each day, kin, month and moon no longer tuned to the wireless of apartheid (apart-the-id) consciousness. The ability to focus is in the eye of the beholder. Shores spotted and sure footing ahead. Utilise the remainder of 2019 with keen mind, good heart and allow yourself to surrender the controls. In order to set sail, envision a brave new world without needing to encroach or invade, just to embrace and invite all to be unified and conscious. ShirleySienna

The Spirit Of Things A Glance at Gordon Higginson by Sam Duly This month my article is about Gordon Higginson who I, alongside many, believe was one of the greatest mediums of all time. Interestingly, the birth of this special man was predicted by Spirit many years before he was born. Gordon’s mother, Fanny, attended a Spiritualist Church service in Longton in the UK with her aunt, when she was 14 years old. The medium went directly to Fanny and said that she had a message from her mother. Fanny perplexed, said her mother was still alive. The medium, however, insisted her mother was in spirit. She then said that Fanny would give birth to a son who would be a great medium and that Fanny herself was also a medium, which was a total shock to her.

50

Supernal Magazine

She went on to predict that both Fanny and her son would be linked to Longton Church for over 100 years. This was something she could not comprehend but which later proved to be true. Fanny rushed home and shockingly found that her mother had died from a heart attack whilst she was at the Service.

“He had amazing abilities in... public speaking and mediumship including physical, trance and platform." As predicted, Gordon Mons Higginson was born on November 17th 1918 in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent. By this time Fanny was a practising medium and Gordon started to sit in her development circle from just

three years old, but she did not allow him to give any communication from spirit until he was 10. Fanny taught Gordon how to demonstrate in front of large crowds and he confidently gave his first demonstration of mediumship on his 12th birthday. She had also paid for him to have elocution lessons, so he worked wonderfully and spoke eloquently in public. He had great charisma and captivated everyone who saw him work. He had amazing abilities in many areas including public speaking and mediumship including physical, trance and platform. He was a wonderful healer, a great teacher and mentor to a few select mediums, including Mavis Pittilla and Paul Jacobs, both well respected UK mediums with

mediumship and Church Services. As they worked on platform together, they became a great team; it was as if their souls merged. Mavis and Gordon also had a strong telepathic connection and he would often jokingly comment on how long it had taken her to contact him after she had first received the thoughts that he had sent her. international reputations, who all speak very highly of him. In Mavis’ new book ‘Droplets of God’, she speaks of how she first met Gordon at Longton Church when he was in his early fifties and she in her early thirties. Recalling how she felt when she met him she said, “It was like meeting God!” She was immediately captivated by Gordon’s commanding presence. Gordon took Mavis under his wing and one of her first experiences was to accompany him to watch healing sessions at Longton. Gordon would invite Mavis to look at the aura of the sitter to see if she could sense any colour change signifying illness. He explained that you must always look at the physical, the mental, the emotional and the spiritual aspects of all illnesses. The aura was his favourite subject - he taught a lot about colour, along with the healing aspect. He also taught that your soul will tell you about the colour and what it means. Gordon took Mavis to many platform demonstrations

Part of Gordon’s mediumship tutoring included his students

at the special Christmas Service at Longton. Gordon taught at the famous Arthur Findlay College, UK from 1965-1993. He was also the Principal at the College from 1979-1993. Indeed, he was the longest serving President of the Spiritualists National Union for 23 years until his passing on January 18th 1993. Gordon died after serving at one of his favourite Churches in Blackpool. He came in from the Service and collapsed and died in his hallway. His teachings however, have carried on through his own students, who then have passed on to their students, thus keeping Gordon’s memory and legacy very much alive. reading for someone behind a screen, without hearing the person’s voice. He was also well known for his love of psychometry as he said it was important to honour the psychic aspect of their development. He was an incredibly accurate and evidential medium - giving full names, addresses and phone numbers in his demonstrations. In his trance and physical mediumship, he had particular guides who worked with him. One predictive guide named ‘Light’ was known to only come through once a year

Enlighten Up

love is operating from a selfserving agenda.

The Breath of Life

For example, you may love working with Ascended Masters or you may prefer working with Archangels.

Connect to Grace part 4 By Freya Sampson Custodian Eartheart

Transforming Life on Earth - in previous issues we’ve covered Connecting to Grace - now it’s time for the how! I’d like to share the first in a series of simple techniques that will help to turn any of the previously discussed problems and consequences into positive benefits. Practicing this exercise will help you to develop your Source connection. It will also generally strengthen your etheric body, which is beneficial for all the Chakras. ‘Connect to Grace’ is a ‘Breath of Life’ exercise to strengthen and expand the Antahkarana or Crown Chakra and begin an Earth connection (refer to issue #3 for Chakra diagram). Regular practice ensures this meridian will become strong and straight like a tree trunk,

52

Supernal Magazine

creating the capacity to access increased light and consciousness. It develops the beginnings of stability by establishing and maintaining connection, so we have access to those high frequency energies that may otherwise elude us. Before doing any type of energy work, I always say an invocation. It is ‘best practice’ and is like putting on a safety belt when driving. Also, it puts one into the energy and state of humility, as the act of invocation allows us to acknowledge that to err is human, that we certainly don’t know everything and don’t get everything right all of the time. Knowing this, we ask to be assisted in elevating our consciousness. You may name any special being that you like to work with, while remembering that only beings that love us unconditionally are the ones that have our Divine highest good at heart. Anything that does not come from unconditional

Ascended Masters are human beings who have become enlightened during a particular known incarnation. They have joined the higher dimensions in service to humanity, assisting to raise consciousness by fulfilling greater roles and often acting as guides and teachers in spirit. Archangels are wonderful, although remember, when you’re asking them for assistance, they have never experienced life in a human body. If you have ancestors that you like to call on, then I suggest in your invocation you could say, “My ancestors who love me unconditionally.” This is meant in the utmost respect to our ancestors for, by their grace and Divine grace, we have this life to live. For us to grow healthily, we need the support of those who can lift us consciously without any personal agenda. If you want to call on anyone specific, you can add it into the following invocation.

energy nears, take a deep breath in and exhale gently through the Crown Chakra, opening the beautiful flower within.

Breath of Life Exercise Invocation I call on the Divine Source. I call on my Higher Self. I call on my team in spirit who love me unconditionally, (Insert your ancestors, ”angelic beings or ascended masters here). Thank you for sharing your healing energies and blessings of guidance, protection and intervention. May the highest good come from this, so be it.

Connect to Grace Become aware of the top of your head and the pillar of light that is your constant connection wherever you go. This light travels up through the sky, through the clouds, the stars and beyond, to the Source of All unconditional love and light. From this place, iridescent white light flows back down, passing through the pillar, to the top of your head. As it

Allow the light to flow in and pass down through your body. As you pass the Heart Chakra, mix unconditional love from your heart centre, breathe it down through the Base Chakra at the bottom of your spine and through your feet, connecting with the centre of the Earth. Breathe the light up and down in this way three times. On the last inhalation, breathe the energies in from the Earth and the Source above, merging them in unconditional love in your heart centre. Finally, expand it in all directions through the Heart Chakra. Completing your Breath of Life Exercise: Give thanks by simply saying; “Thank you, thank you, thank you.” If you prefer to say a little more, you could say: “Thank you to all of those who have been with me today. Thank you for the growth and healing, for your guidance and unconditionally loving service. Thank you.” After many years of growth and development, I come back to this and other simple

exercises constantly. They are very powerful and form the strong foundation of everything else. As you grow, you will easily tell when you’re not connected; you may feel anxiety, fear, disconnected, lonely or isolated, stressed out or that the onus is all on you. When you’re connected however, everything flows and mini miracles happen constantly. That’s how we learn in Earth’s school, through the contrast of experience and I know which experiences I prefer! I hope you enjoy this exercise and, if you practice, you’ll enjoy the benefits of connecting to grace and developing a healthy Crown Chakra. Next month we’ll work with grounding the Root Chakra, where humanity becomes ‘human-i-tree’. Have a blissful month. VIRGO

Ever-so-diligent

Virgo

“To seek Mind with the discriminating mind is the greatest of all mistakes” Sosan The Virgo mind is in deep trouble then, as it is constantly discriminating, refining and trying to improve itself. No wonder Virgo people are so often anxious and a touch neurotic. In their busy time scheduled world, nothing can be left to chance or serendipity. On the contrary, all the discrete elements of daily life must be studiously analysed and conscientiously attended to in order to achieve optimal functional efficiency.

54

Supernal Magazine

For example, food is to be masticated thoroughly, teeth flossed meticulously; skin cleansed assiduously, clothes folded neatly, files sorted and labelled with appropriate colour-coded stickers, cars serviced regularly, computers defragged daily, bills paid on time and on it goes on. Only when all jobs on the todo-list have been ticked off as completed, can ever-sodiligent Virgo switch-off and unwind. Virgo is a mutable, dualistic sign and when true to type, Virgo’s tend to be either sickness prone or extremely healthy. Health conscious Virgos regard their body as a temple of the spirit and religiously engage in daily rituals of cleansing and purification. Sickness prone Virgos typically have a delicate constitution and problems with digestion and nervous tension. To achieve well-being, they need to pay

attention to their diet, get plenty of rest and generally cultivate healthy habits, taking especial note of Samuel Johnson’s aphorism: “The chains of habit are too weak to be felt until they are too strong to be broken.” Familiar so far? But now I would like to correct the stereotypical conceptions of Virgo as virginal, prudish, unduly humble and well, just plain boring. Really? Virgo is a sign which evokes the potent mythic figure of the Great Earth Goddess as whole, self-contained and one-in-herself, belonging to no one, even in a relationship – the deeper meaning of Virgo as ‘virginal’. For further evidence of the richness of this sign, consider the role of its planetary ruler Mercury in his guise of Doctor Mercurius, as the guide and overseer of the alchemical quest to distil the philosopher’s stone from the

astrology prima materia of nature - the renaissance equivalent of the quest for enlightenment. Buddhism, too, seems to me to reflect the flavour of this sign, with its emphasis on the virtues of mindfulness, humility and discrimination and in its rigorously logical approach to ending suffering. Also Christianity with its two Mary’s, one the virginal mother of Jesus, the other a prostitute, suggests the life pattern of many a Virgo, which sees them live out either both sides of the virgin/whore, saint/sinner dichotomies, or polarise

strongly to one side against the other. Madonna, a sun sign Leo with her Moon and Ascendant in the sign Virgo, is a good example. Note the title of her iconic single ‘Like a Virgin’. As is the great Russian writer Leo Tolstoy, who initially lived a dissolute life in gambling saloons and brothels and fought as an artillery officer in the Crimean War, only to transform from mid-life onwards into a religious pacifist. The rich aristocrat who delighted in hunting renounced his considerable possessions and became an avid vegetarian! Many great writers are born under the sign of Mercury ruled Virgo, for example Johann Goethe, Mary Shelley, H.G Wells, D H Lawrence, Jorge Luis Borges, Paulo Coelho, author of The Alchemist; Agatha Christie, Christopher Isherwood, Arthur Koestler, J.B Priestley, Roald Dahl, Upton Sinclair, Stephen King, Dorothy Parker, William Golding, author of Lord Of The Flies; Han Suyin, author of Love Is A Many Splendoured Thing; Edgar Rice Burroughs, creator of the Tarzan character; Fay Weldon, historian Arnold Toynbee, play write Antonin Artaud and author of the first English Language Dictionary, Samuel Johnson.

The latter is quintessentially Virgoan when he writes in the introduction to that work: “When I took the first survey of my undertaking, I found our speech copious without order and energetic without rules; wherever I turned my view, there was complexity to be disentangled and confusion to be regulated...” Mercurially Virgoan also was his gift for aphorisms, for example, the oft quoted “The road to hell is paved with good intentions.” “No man has sunk too low to be able to raise himself to God.” - Baal Shem Tov Virgoan spiritual exemplars include the founder of Hasidic Judaism, the Baal Shem Tov, the founder of the modern Hare Krishna movement Swami Prabhupada and the contemporary Indian spiritual teacher, musician and peace activist Sri Chinmoy, who was the inspiration behind guitarists Carlos Santana and John McLaughlin’s album, Love, Devotion and Surrender. Here is a representative quote: “True religion has a universal quality, it does not find fault with other religions. Forgiveness, compassion, tolerance, brotherhood and the feeling of oneness are the signs of a true Varij Varidium religion.”

Happy Haunting B e a u t i f u l

B a r w o n

P a r t by Gary Sullivan G’day folks, Hope all is well with you. In this issue we travel to the lovely Winchelsea, just outside of Geelong, to the beautiful Barwon Park Homestead. Built in 1871 by Thomas and Elizabeth Austin, this gorgeous 42 room mansion was built to entertain the Duke of Edinburgh. Being wealthy pastoralists, Thomas and Elizabeth were embarrassed to entertain such prestigious guests in their existing home, so the mansion was built. After its completion in 1871, Thomas being a member of the Acclimatisation Society, introduced rabbits on to his property for hunting and breeding purposes. Little did he know what the end result was going to be! Thomas died six months after the completion of the Mansion from an infection in his hand caused by a splinter. Elizabeth Austin lived on in the house until her death in 56

1 1910. She was the Matriarch of the Austin Hospital, so named after her. Mrs Austin was a philanthropist and believed in finding cures for those struck down by incurable diseases. Despite being a wealthy widower, she was somewhat of a recluse, only ever venturing out occasionally with her companion, Miss Maides, in her Brougham with her coachman dressed in full livery. We had been granted permission by the National Trust to investigate this beautiful Italianate Mansion. It was not going to disappoint. After arriving and marvelling in its grandeur, we

began a walk around to get a feel for the place. It had a beautiful, calming feel about it; certainly not a malicious place. I started taking Baseline readings with EMF detectors to mark out where electrical hot spots were, like power points switches and so on. Anthony sat upstairs playing his flute and immersing himself in the energy. It was getting dark, so after setting up cameras and audio equipment, we decided to walk around and find a place to do a vigil. We got to the basement stairs when Anthony commented that he felt something a little negative compared to the rest of the house. He suggested that we should do a vigil here first but I wanted to explore a little more and said NO strongly! It was then that the basement door slammed shut in my face sending me backwards a few steps. Anthony suggested that I must have upset whatever was down there. I brushed

Numerology Number 8 opens the gate; shut it quick before the brown fox jumps over the lazy dog and the fat cat gets off the mat. August vibrates with 8. It is unifying and balanced, it is infinite and full of potential - but you must work on getting there by broadening your horizons and perspective and seeing past the collective matrix into the dreaming. Etheric messengers align with number 8, lateral thinking and divine wisdom must go hand in hand. Eight will bring health and healing, but remember there are two sides of the coin. What are you needing to heal from, and health is body, mind and spirit? Coin is 8, signifying energy and money. You must be ready for action and move your feet with the rhythm and tone of integrity or the the dance of abundance in its highest form is dormant. A tuneful jig always gets things moving and is music to your ears. If the wallet is full, the bank accounts with wellness, life is good. Hard work and dedication to humanity says 8. In giving you receive and in caring you are supported. Real estate and building both dreams and houses. Fortunes made and lost, unity and tying the knot. Care factors, so make sure the care-factor has a numeric value, zero care-factor is nonsensical. Eight is the adage - where the attention goes the energy flows. Be wise, generous and giving.

Quote of the Month “So we set ourselves this first goal: By 1990 no Australian child will be living in poverty. And to this end, my Government will establish a new program of family help – a program designed to lift more than 1 million Australian children into security and to help the more than half a million Australian families in greatest need, the hardest pushed, the most disadvantaged.” - Bob Hawke, Australian Labor Party - Sydney, NSW, June 23rd, 1987 Bob Hawke served as Australia’s Prime Minister from 1983-1991 and led Labor to four consecutive election victories. With the above statement, he brought to our attention in 1987 - some 32 years ago - the outstanding issues of homelessness and poverty in Australia at the time. We’re sure from what’s been said, his goals were well-intentioned, though evidently fell short of their mark. Considering that there has been a huge rise in mothers and children becoming homeless in the last few years, it really does highlight that the system as it stands is fundamentally broken, and in need of some serious remodelling to help lift it in the right direction. 58
