A Letter from the Editor

People Create Stories It’s been an amazing journey with Supernal Magazine so far. There’s been a lot of work getting an amazing team together, from the art directors to the writers; there are some seriously good people behind this magazine. People with stories, people with passion! “Our fourth issue aligned with the month of June, which just so happens to be international Pride Month.”

I think possibly the best thing has been meeting some incredible people while organising the magazine. Supernal is about people, their stories and how life can be changed in a flash and yet people survive and move on! Over the years, while travelling Australia and overseas, I have been privileged to meet some awesome people. Whether it’s visiting an Aboriginal Community in remote Outback Western Australia, living in India on the side of a hill or wandering across the US, the depths of life’s stories never cease to inspire me. All it takes is the ability to listen and simply allow things to unfold for the magic to happen.

This month’s feature story has unfolded like that. A few years ago, I was approached by a company who worked with the LGBTQI+ community looking for a medium to work within the community. There are a lot of spiritual people searching for a deeper understanding and finding a suitable medium was an important part of the process. The position didn’t eventuate, and I hadn’t thought about it much until after Supernal was born. “Charlotte was very determined and direct while still retaining a fun outlook on life…”

It was suggested that we should consider a columnist who could provide an authentic voice to help educate people about the trials and tribulations of this part of our community. I found it particularly fitting that our fourth issue aligned with the month of June, which just so happens to be the 50th anniversary of international Pride Month for the LGBTQI+ Community! The month serves as a celebration of identity and remembrance for the past (the month of June being chosen in keeping with the memory of the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York City – a turning point in LGBTQI+ history that is widely considered to have sparked the movement towards widespread acceptance of the community. Issues around same-sex marriage, equal rights and discrimination -especially from certain religious communities - make life hard enough without people who judge with vitriol and hatred, however it is the strength and courage of those who remain strong in the face of such injustices that inspire us all to stand with them.

JUNE 2019 With that in mind, I was introduced to Celeste de Vis - a well-educated and caring woman with a vivacious personality who happens to be very religious while also identifying as pansexual. She also is the proud parent of a transgender daughter, Charlotte, who was assigned male at birth, and has graciously agreed to share the story of their transition as a family with us this issue. Spending time with these incredible people has really opened my eyes to another way of looking at life and how important it is in this crazy and harsh world to find your own authentic self.

to be who you are is something we can all agree on. Writing our feature story, I found it hard to fathom where the fear comes from that drives some people to be horrid. Celeste was happy to discuss openly all aspects of their journey. Charlotte was very determined and direct while still retaining a fun outlook on life considering the way she’s been treated. It’s simply awe inspiring! Moving on from that, we are working hard behind the scenes to grow our audience and share our social media pages. In fact, The Unlikely Marathoner book, as a giveaway, was very successful. Congratulations to Pamela Mattea from Shepparton who won the book. We’d also like to thank Donna Campisi for her generous offer and support. “Spending time with this amazing mum and daughter has really opened my eyes to another way of looking at life…”

I’m beginning to understand how hard it is to fight a binary system geared to men and womens’ specific gender roles and how this affects all aspects of life from home, work and sport. Discrimination, bullying, and hatred born of fear is causing people untold stress and pain and, in some extreme cases, can even lead to suicide. This simply indicates why it is so important to spread the message of acceptance and love towards our fellow people, in hopes that one day being free

There are a number of other fantastic stories and columns within the electronic pages of this issue. Jason D Varga looks at the mental health state around divorce. Gary Sullivan guides us through the spooky halls of Pleasant Creek and, following on from our feature story, Derran Heney takes an in depth look at Gender Dysphoria and how important it is to understand it. It is a serious issue that needs to be shared and understood and in doing so, could save lives! I hope you enjoy the read and have a Supernal month!

FILM REVIEW Another Country - as told by David Gulpilil Reviewed by Anthony Kilner

“No one from any government has ever known our language. … How can they know us?” - David Gulpilil A special screening of Another Country was held at Rosebud Theatre by the Cooee Café and the Mornington Peninsula based Willum Warrain Aboriginal Association Incorporated. The documentary was first released in 2015 and quickly gained a following. It’s a confronting story that is articulated with expression by legendary Australian actor, David Gulpilil, about life in his community Ramingining, in the top end of Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory. Another Country explores a way of life lived by the Yolngu people that has been dictated by the Australian Government over decades and how that impact has created multiple issues for the community as a whole. It opens up tough discussions regarding community life, indigenous spirituality, community pride, and explores just how indigenous culture and western culture struggle to create a way of life that includes all people in one community. One question David raises is a simple yet powerful one - “Why didn’t the government ask us what we wanted?” It was more than that though, as white settlement expanded into country bringing with it social problems, hatred, fear, degradation and more. On a personal note, I loved the honesty of the conversation. Anyone that watches this documentary may walk away feeling dirty, enlightened, challenged and, above all, educated. This is just one community. There are communities like this across Australia that each have their own unique story to share. It’s worth watching! Happy Haunting: A Touch of Paranormal

June brings to light the forgotten passages and crumbling courtyards hidden within a longabandoned hospital in rural Victoria. by Gary Sullivan G’day folks. This issue I’m heading for Stawell, Victoria to a place called Pleasant Creek Hospital on the outskirts of town. The hospital was built in 1861 and was used as a community hospital for those who could not afford mainstream medical care. The area of Stawell, or

Pleasant Creek as it was known back then, was a haven for gold fossickers in the height of the great gold rush. Plenty of Alluvial gold was to be found in the nearby creek where the hospital now resides. Originally it was a makeshift wooden building built on Doctors Hill. During it’s time,

:

because Stawell was just too far away from any major city, there were many untrained medical staff who simply volunteered. Ararat was the closest, and it had its own hospital with paid medical staff. I was invited alongside Anthony Kilner, my paranormal partner, to investigate this unusual location. This place took on a strange, eerie feeling from the moment we arrived. After looking around the area, we walked towards a building at the back of the main entrance. We both agreed that the energy felt strange and as we were discussing this, we were startled by a pigeon that flew straight into something we could not see, like an invisible wall. It squawked and flapped then rolled down the roof and into the gutter. Shaking itself down it looked at us as if to say “What the..!” I wouldn’t have believed it unless I actually had seen it for myself. We decided to go into this building and do a communication vigil. The moment we sat down there was a loud bang that came from the corner of the room.

paranormal Startled, I shone my torch in that direction and, yes, you guessed it, there was nothing there. We went back to our vigil, when there was another extremely loud bang as though somebody had hit the inside wall in the same corner. Being the ever-curious investigators we continued on. Anthony decided to play his Native American Indian flute to try and calm what was there. This seemed to work as we didn’t hear another bang.

invited in, more on an energetic level than a person opening the door for us. We set up our chairs and got comfortable. Anthony switched on the audio recorder as we settled into another vigil. Anthony again began to play his flute, which has a beautiful soothing sound. Just before we began trying to communicate verbally, I had said to Anthony that even as it was a warm night I felt like I was burning up.

Just after Anthony stopped playing, I noticed what seemed to be shadow figures moving about ahead of us. We were both witnessing the same thing. I got up to investigate, but yet again there was nothing there. Continuing on we both saw what appeared to be strange light anomalies coming out of a doorway and disappearing into the floor about 10 feet in front of us. It wasn’t long before we heard the sound of footsteps walking towards us and stopping in the same area. I had no explanation as to why this was happening. Just as quickly as it started it stopped.

Now, little did I know it at the time, I had just recorded one of the clearest EVP’s (Electronic Voice Phenomena) that I have ever captured. Very shortly after that, I felt as though I was burning hot, and a very clear whisper said, “You’re on Fire!”

We decided to explore the Entertainment Hall next as it felt like we were being

Anthony, being the medium, had picked up on a young boy in spirit who was hiding in the shadows of the stage behind us, watching in amazement. He seemed to come closer, then moved back as if he were apprehensive. Anthony explained that he appeared to be in his early teens, yet seemed to act a lot younger. He also picked up he may have been suffering from a mental health issue.

Anthony was picking up that the boy was scared because he didn’t want to get in trouble. Could this be the disembodied voice that I just captured moments ago? To this day I’ll never know if it was him or not. The records show that this place was also a children’s hospital for those with special needs, as well as being an infectious diseases hospital. Overall, Pleasant Creek didn’t quite live up to its name. It turned out to be “Not so pleasant!” Until next time, Happy haunting!

in a strange land’, it may take much inner and outer journeying before they come to realise that ‘home is where the heart is.’ For others, undertaking nothing less than a lifelong spiritual quest maybe necessary to discover their true home, which for some could be expressed as a coming home to God. These famous lines of William Wordsworth may then inspire: “Our birth is but a sleep and a forgetting / The soul that rises with us, our life’s star / Hath had elsewhere its setting / And cometh from afar / Not in entire forgetfulness / And not in entire nakedness / But trailing clouds of glory do we come / From God who is our home.” Or, more succinctly: “Our destiny, our being’s heart and home / Is with infinitude, and only there.” For yet other Cancerians, like that sage of the interior journey, Herman Hesse, the

in the benevolence of the Great Mother, knowing the bosom of existence is available at all times to provide succour on the long and winding road home. Such blessed ones, secure and at peace within themselves, are happily free from the anxious need to have a safe harbour to retreat to, before they will venture out into the big wide ocean of life in their vulnerable little ego-boats.

“A deep longing in all Cancerians is to find home, a place where they truly belong.” Attachment, especially between parent and child, is perhaps the classical Cancerian dragon to

Care and compassion are prime Cancerian virtues and, as an imperative of soul, they found expression in the life and work of conscious dying advocate, Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, who devoted her whole life to caring for the sick and dying. I am moved by these words from her autobiography, The Wheel Of Life. “Everyday someone new cries out for understanding and compassion. Listen to the sound. Hear the call as if it was beautiful music. I can assure you that the greatest rewards in your whole life will come from opening your heart to those in need. The greatest blessings always come from helping.” How the wheel of life turns. As she reiterates constantly, there are no accidents. Carl Jung expressed it so: “What happens to a person is characteristic of him. He represents a pattern and all the pieces fit. One by one as his life proceeds they fall into place according to some predestined design.” And so it came to pass that

Kübler-Ross suffered a series of strokes that left her totally dependent on others for the most basic care.

“…it may take much inner and outer journeying before they come to realize that ‘home is where the heart is.” The pattern of Kübler-Ross’ life is clearly indicated in her birth chart, for she was born with the Sun joined to Pluto, the planet of death, rebirth and transformation. This planetary Daimon expressed itself throughout her life, from the fulfilment of her vocational quest to bring death out of the closet of fear, in which it was enclosed by Western culture, and constantly informs her writing as in this excerpt from a letter she wrote to a child dying with cancer: “When we have done all the work we were sent to earth to do, we are allowed to shed our body, which imprisons our soul like a cocoon encloses the future butterfly. And when the time is right, we can let go of it and we will be free of pain, free of fears and worries - free as a very beautiful butterfly returning home to God.”

Enlighten Up The Breath of Life By Freya Sampson

In fact, if we notice that our breathing is halted or too fast then we can have the presence of self to change our state of being by consciously changing our breath.

Custodian Eartheart

Why is breath so important? When we breathe in and out we are accessing or expelling energy, food or waste. Whilst the intake of oxygen is food for the physical body, when it comes to meditation it’s a small part of the equation. ‘Breath of Life’ is the term I call the type of meditation also known as; Yogic breathing, Pranayama or Chakral breathing. In Hindu Prana means - vital life force energy. ‘Yama’ is the God of Death, in this case referring to exhaling. ‘Chakra’ means - spinning wheel. See Issue 3, May 2019 for more on chakras.

16

Supernal Magazine

Within all of the complimentary healing modalities/techniques that I facilitate, there is an important focus upon breath. We can work with our breath to direct or control energy, pain, emotional release, increased focus and many other benefits. When people feel fear, they usually forget to breathe. This is why it is often said, in terms of anxiety, people are afraid to breathe in the future and with depression, people are afraid to breathe out - letting go the past. “Some people’s silver cords are as thin as a hair and some, like the Dali Lama’s, are like a freeway.”

We tend to take breathing for granted, thinking that it all just happens without having to pay attention. On one level it does and on another level, awareness of the breath is very important, because we can track how our emotional body responds to any given situation by observing how our breathing is occurring.

For anyone who is deliberately seeking to elevate and expand their consciousness and awareness, open their heart to more love, good health and wellbeing or more peace, joy, self-love and all other good things, conscious breathing techniques and exercises are a vital tool in the kit. With ‘Breath of Life’ exercises in the early stages the focus is upon the actions of inhalation and the exhalation. Down the track, as one develops skilfulness with the exercise, the clarity, size and strength of our meridians and chakras changes, then the focus becomes about the space between the breaths. That’s where the real magic happens. Like with any skill, foundation is very important. Last month, we spoke about chakras. You may recall we talked about the order and function of chakras, that they are connected by meridians, which together act as the plumbing and the wiring for carrying energy to the whole multi-dimensional being.

energy some, like the Dali Lama’s, are like a freeway. Did you know that when he comes to any city the crime rate drops? Amazing! It’s because he’s embodied so much peace, through lifetimes of service and practices. The Antahkarana, together with the Crown Chakra, is the first one to activate. As it is the bridge of consciousness, it allows one to access higher awareness. We then move beyond the level of consciousness where we experience difficulties in life, by accessing and breathing in the higher levels of truth. Consciousness is like climbing an infinite spiral staircase.

When these tubes and channels are clean and clear, really good things happen in life. “When these tubes and channels are clean and clear, really good things happen in life.”

could at best access around 1000 volts in an enlightened incarnation. “More peace, joy, self-love and all other good things.”

This meridian connects one to Source and is always with us, following us wherever we go. Although we are always connected, sometimes we can drop in conscious awareness to the point where it seems to us that we are disconnected, isolated and alone. This feeling is never true, even when we feel it intensely, it is really there to tell us that we need to reconnect consciously to Source and then we will feel better. Next time we meet, we’ll look into the Crown chakra - the gateway of consciousness.

Happy journey.

Think of the Source of All That Is, as the equivalent of a million volts, which Every living being has a really pass down through the big Arterial Meridian called Antahkarana and the the Bridge of Consciousness - transpersonal chakras above aka ‘Antahkarana’, the silver the top of our head. It is your high speed the Crown Chakra and, connection to Source. by the time it has reached there, depending on our Some people’s silver cords level of development, we are as thin as a hair and

Supernal Interview

Dr. Ken Pang Royal Children’s Hospital Gender Service As a part of our feature story on Celeste and Charlotte, we organised to interview Dr Ken Pang from the Royal Children’s Hospital Gender Service (RCHGS). Dr Pang is a consultant paediatrician and biomedical researcher. Clinically, he trained in paediatrics and child psychiatry, and he currently works with young trans and gender diverse individuals via the Gender Service (GS) at the RCH in Melbourne. Both Celeste and Charlotte had questions of Dr Pang that they thought would be of interest to our readers. Interview by Celeste & Charlotte de Vis

Who or what inspired your interest in Adolescent Medicine? Dating back to when I was a medical student, I have been equally interested in mental health and paediatrics (and trained in both fields), so Adolescent Medicine - which brings together both of these areas - has been a great fit.

How long have you been practicing? I graduated from medical school in 1998 (I qualified as a paediatrician in 2008), so have been practicing for around 20 years. For much of that time though, I’ve been heavily involved in various research activities, including several years as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University.

18

Supernal Magazine

Can you describe the number of referrals to access the GS over the past several years, and if it has changed, why? The number of referrals has increased dramatically in recent years. For instance, in 2012, there were less than 20 referrals, and in 2018, there were more 250, a 10-fold increase. The exact cause for this increase is unknown, but I think that there are various reasons. One reason that makes sense to me is that adolescents and their families have become a lot more aware of gender diversity (e.g. through the news, social media, friends) in recent years. This has enabled young trans and gender diverse people to not feel alone and has

interview Can you give us a bit of insight into what the Trans20 Project is about?

encouraged them to let their families know how they feel and to seek help. At the same time, GS such as ours at the RCH, have been established and with that has come community awareness around what services are available.

What does a typical day at the RCHGS entail? I will often spend a couple of hours getting to meet a new young person and their family, hopefully helping to provide them with some support and a better sense of their ongoing journey of care through the GS. The rest of the day I spend time with patients whom I already know and chatting with my wonderful colleagues.

What have been some of the highlights during your career at the RCHGS? Clinically, the highlight has been getting to know the many young people whomI’ve worked with since joining the GS. It’s been a privilege to be part of their journeys.

Transgender health care for young people is a relatively new and important field of practice. As a paediatrician, I feel like I’m in the right environment that is specifically dedicated to improving the health of transgender children and adolescents. I also now lead the research activities of the GS and there have been several highlights on that front. Apart from the Trans20 project (more on this in just a moment), our research team has been involved in a number of projects and publications. These include the first ever systematic review of the effects of hormone treatments in transgender youth, which was published in the leading journal, Paediatrics, as well as the first ever clinical guidelines specifically written for transgender children and adolescents - the importance of which was highlighted by an editorial in the prestigious journal, The Lancet, last year.

The Trans20 project is a long-term study that began in 2017 with the generous support of the RCH Foundation. The broad aim of this project is to determine the medical, psychological and social outcomes for transgender adolescents attending our service. Data is collected prospectively as part of routine clinical care and includes information, not only on gender identity, social transition, gender dysphoria, and genderrelated health care, but also mental health, physical health, education, quality of life and family functioning. Using baseline Trans20 data, we have started asking clinically relevant questions related to risk and resilience factors, and how different groups (e.g. those with a non-binary gender identity or autism spectrum disorder) vary in their presentation and needs. In time, using longitudinal data, we will be able to address other important questions, such as the evolution of gender identity and dysphoria over time, and the role and safety of different interventions, both medical and psychosocial. Being free to be us! By Anthony Kilner Our Supernal feature this month covers the topic of transgender children. Mornington Peninsula Mum, Celeste de Vis and her transgender daughter, Charlotte has graciously agreed to share the journey of their transition as a family with us. From a young age, Charlotte questioned her relationship with her gender identity; she had always innately known that she didn’t quite fit into the ‘male’ identity that her biological sex had assigned her. For a young person, not fitting into the norm can be a confusing and distressing situation; however Celeste was determined to learn as much as she could to help ease Charlotte through the transition process. In doing so, they have strengthened not only their bond and understanding of one another, but their knowledge of their own truths and what it means to be your authentic self. Within seconds of knocking on the door, a young girl flashed into sight, un-snipped the door, said “Come in!” and disappeared again. At this point I was greeted warmly by mum, Celeste. This was the start of a fun,

chatty afternoon with a beautiful family. Life often throws challenges at us and, in many ways; life is about solving those challenges. Depending on a person’s life, social standing,

wealth, health and other factors, these challenges are very much based on an individual’s circumstances, even though the challenges may look and feel the same. We can empathise with people’s problems only if we

feature can slightly understand what they are experiencing – this helps them and us, to at least understand enough to care.

“The church stated that they would have to purge the Devil from Celeste in order for her son to return.” The best way to understand is to listen and wow, has my world expanded because of meeting these girls. They live in a place and space where bigotry, fear, and bullying is the norm, yet with love, respect and the support of their community, life is so much more fun for these girls. Plus they are committed to helping others too. In fact, helping their community, making acceptance the norm, being able to help educate people as to the plight of their community without fear and judgement has become a way of life. They are special indeed, however it’s been born from ignorance. This is the story of Celeste, Charlotte and Renee - it’s a beautiful one! Meet Celeste Celeste is in her late 40s, and is a 50s and 60s retro loving tragic - the colour, the look and the sound that

At age four dynamics started to shift in the de Vis household. Josiah said, “My name is Charlotte and I am not a boy anymore!” The insistent, consistent and persistent nature of Charlotte’s protestations over the next four years led Celeste to struggle with what this would mean for her family. She had been brought face to face with a concept that was difficult to understand, and her inability to grasp the idea at first sparked a sense of despair and frustration – what was wrong?

was that era. She is bright, bubbly and very aware of her life and what’s impacted her. To understand this story, we have to go back a few years. Celeste was single in her mid-30s, desperately wanting a child and with no suitable partner in sight, Celeste made the decision to go through the IVF program and become a single parent. This was made possible by her father who helped out financially,

22

but more importantly by law reform allowing single women access to the IVF program. Celeste gave birth to a son, Josiah in January 2006. He was perfect and life was moving along according to plan. After 2.5 years, the caring mum was in a position to expand her family and in 2008 Renee joined the family as a foster child. Celeste had Josiah – the son, and Renee – the daughter, and gender roles were set.

With a diploma of education under her belt, Celeste understood that children have a tendency to swing between gender play naturally but Charlotte wouldn’t let it go. At the age of eight, Celeste had become aware that there was no way around it. Charlotte knew innately that she was a girl, and the only thing to do was to truly affirm Charlotte as her daughter. In doing so, both their lives changed forever. The first two or three years were hard on the family as accepting their truth resulted in the loss of friends and community as they introduced Charlotte. Celeste stated that, “One of the biggest losses was our church family. It was

feature heartbreaking for us as we are very religious and went to church every week.” The church stated that they would have to purge the Devil from Celeste in order for her son to return. At that stage Celeste had begun to amass a significant education around transgender issues and the broader LGBTQI+ community and walked away from the church terribly hurt. Eventually they found an amazing new church, one that loves them for who they are with no judgement. Celeste looked to the internet to find answers within online support groups to help her in the early days before hearing about the Royal Children’s Gender Service (RCHGS). A branch of the Royal Children’s Hospital devoted to improving the physical and mental health outcomes of young gender-diverse people. Celeste stated that, “This was truly the start of my education.”

a support group called Rainbow Connections Mornington Peninsula. When Charlotte transitioned in 2014, I became afire for information, education and to advocate for these kids. The community services sector I worked in referred me to council and it all just happened. “While online support got me through so much, it wasn’t tangible enough. There wasn’t anything set up to help families with transgender kids under 13. I needed a family group – parents with parents and kids with kids and siblings included – it’s for everybody! “By the second term there were two families, then eight and now 12 families are receiving support. People

can also just drop in, for short or long times depending on their needs.” Celeste and Charlotte both had a shared excitement around a study called the ‘Trans 20 Project’ from RCHGS launched in late 2017. This is the first Australia study ever that will show the outcomes of young Australian transgender people when they receive adequate support as opposed to no support at all. There are enough statistics now to show what happens when these young people aren’t supported; with 79 percent of kids self-harming and indications that 1 in 2 will attempt suicide from ages 12 to 17. However, when treated with the care, support and affirmations that are necessary to

promote positive growth and wellbeing, it has become scientifically evident that the quality of life of transgender children and adolescents improves dramatically.

she is Pansexual and came out last year. Pansexuality is the sexual, romantic or emotional attraction towards people regardless of their sex or gender identity.

Celeste proudly states, “Charlotte is an amazing little girl, with five years of getting on with her authentic life!” She went on to say that she might regret the torment she caused by not recognising Charlotte as a girl, however, I beg to differ as ultimately her experience was the catalyst required to push herself to truly understand her daughter and re-evaluate what was most important in her family, resulting in a stronger bond for both mother and daughter.

A final word from Celeste is that, “This world is not up to date with education; education about self, a sense of self and gender.

One other point to note that is special about Celeste’s journey is the realisation that

24

Supernal Magazine

This can lead to incongruence within them, the person, and their families and this needs to be addressed for the world to be a happier place.” Meet Charlotte Charlotte is a bubbly 13yo, who is very chatty and knows exactly what she wants in life. Watching and listening to Charlotte and her mum chat, there’s an almost tangible feeling of love and respect.

Charlotte has highfunctioning Autism and as a part of that, her mind is well suited to maths, science and engineering. That also leads to its own problems when it comes to school life and life in general. Just having Autism is enough for people to be judgemental, as it’s not always a visible thing for people to see. We’ve covered a lot of Charlotte’s life in the introduction to Celeste, however Charlotte too can remember a lot of her early life and was happy to chat about it in serious yet friendly, non-judgmental terms. From as young as she can remember, Charlotte loved to dress up in girl’s cloths and whenever she could, she would. She especially loved her fairy and pixie clothing

feature where she could run around with a wand and be really free within her mind as to who she was.

“My name is Charlotte and I am not a boy anymore.” Articulate in explaining her transition, Charlotte wrestled with the concept of being a girl in the wrong body from the age of four. During those times, it was tough because she was allowed to be a girl inside her home, but had to remain a boy to the outside world. This meant conflict with her authentic self to avoid relationship and judgement issues from others.

That judgement came from her school and friends in the community and, with no support, she never felt truly happy. Bullying was a very real problem that affected Charlotte badly! Charlotte struggled to express just how she felt when her mum finally came home and told her that they were going to a hospital for kids like her, a place where kids could go and be understood and accepted for who they are – transgender. It was a profoundly emotional time for all the family. A new school with a Safe Schools Coalition education program to talk about gender diversity and

Charlotte loves maths and this note was found scribbled down in a school uniform pocket.

suddenly Charlotte was happier than she has ever been. She is a leader for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) program and apart from the normal ups and downs of a teenager, I can’t remember seeing a kid who has been through the ringer, so at ease with who they are and genuinely happy to be in that space. Dealing with Change Celeste and Charlotte chat about the trials and tribulations of being involved with the RCHGS. In short, there is a multidisciplinary team at the RCHGS ward that includes doctors, nurses, paediatricians and psychologists who work and care for these kids. Charlotte attends roughly every two months for puberty suppressant treatments - a slow releasing drug that completely suppresses the male characteristics of puberty. This is a Stage One treatment and it’s completely reversible. Charlotte’s treatments will continue to Stage Two treatment starting at 14. This is where the young person has their gender confirmed and undergoes hormone treatment to align to a boy or a girl.

Divorce

the grief of losing someone still living!

by Jason D. Varga

Statistically, according to the Holmes and Rahe scale, the top most stressful life events and their mean values are as follows: 1. Death of a spouse (or child*): 100 2. Divorce: 73 3. Marital separation from mate: 65 4. Detention in Jail or other institution: 63 5. Death of a close family member: 63 6. Personal injury or illness: 53

28

Supernal Magazine

*Note: Death of a child was not originally defined in the original scale, but due to its catastrophic effects on an individual, it has since been added. Personally I feel it should be given its own scale ranking. Check out the Holmes and Rahe scale here. Personally, I have experienced five out of the top six (no wonder I am so passionate in helping others live above their grief). Each one holds very different finite or ongoing life stressors, and to tell you the truth I could not consciously rank those experiences for myself. A personal injury or illness that prevents us from ever living a normal life is very different to the grief of losing a loved one. That grief runs deep and can also have a crippling effect on a person’s life. Those effects are experienced very different for all of us and those around us. As you can see Divorce and Marital Separation rate second highest. The grief of divorce can be devastating and have an ongoing negative impact on a person’s day to day life, why? When experiencing divorce we grieve for someone that is still among the living, we grieve not only for ourselves, but also for the affect it has

on our children (if involved), plus our families and friends that we invariably keep or lose to the other party. With divorce there is often no formal goodbye or sense of closure. If care for children is involved one must maintain some form of relationship with their ex-partner which can be harrowing and frustrating. “In the case of divorce many times there are no final goodbyes.” Depending on the circumstances of the relationship breakdown, this grief can vary in intensity. On one end of the scale the relationship ends amicably, both parties agreeing that the marriage had run its course and it is no longer working for either of them and both are happy to see the other succeed and move on. In this instance there will still be sadness and a grieving process for the loss of the relationship however this is the best (and

mental health The problem is, if you have shared custody of children and need to maintain contact with your expartner, then this becomes unavoidable, discussions about the children’s education, health etc. are impossible to have without thinking of that person. “Have a funeral for the relationship.”

unfortunately the rarest) scenario. On the other end of the scale one party may still be very much in love with their partner and unaware of any problems however the other partner decides to leave or, sabotage the relationship in other ways, to cause the relationship to come to a painful end. Let’s face it, most separations and subsequent divorces are messy by nature, and the longer both parties have to have contact with each other the messier it can become, with one or both festering deep resentment to mask their grief. This festering can develop into a grief cancer, often debilitating on an emotional and energetic level. Psychologists have suggested that you know when you are stuck in your grief if you think of your ex on a regular basis.

It’s healthy to remember the good times, even the bad, but lay the relationship to rest. Have a funeral for the relationship, and nurture a business like relationship with the lost but still around expartner. Cultivating this sort of relationship is a win/win situation, the children will be happier that there are less arguments during contact, both their parents will be happier in their own lives and can move forward leaving their grief behind. Remember that this grief is fuelled by so many other emotions apart from the obvious loss, such as resentment, anger, sadness, envy and the list goes on. Any one of these emotions can surface with just a thought about the ex-partner, this is why it is important to put the relationship to rest, never regret a thing, the relationship would have taught you so many lessons

to help build stronger, better relationships in the future. “It is the lesson itself that is important and the tools it has given you for a brighter future.” I see a lot of posts and memes on social media calling an ex-partner or relationship a mistake, well, we learn from our mistakes. However I do not feel that that is the way it should be viewed. Personally, I feel that any relationship is a lesson, there is no test at the end, it is not whether you pass or fail, it is the lesson itself that is important and the tools it has given you for a brighter future. Remember if you feel you are not coping, or are stuck in your grief (especially men, who mask this grief internally), there is help out there, counselling, support groups and telephone help is readily available, even just talking to a trusted friend can help say goodbye to this grief through understanding.

ESPecially best wishes The Mentalist

Gender Dysphoria :

Understanding the Authentic Self Gender Dysphoria (GD) can be described as the emotional and psychological conflict, distress and discontent between a person’s assigned gender, which relates to a person’s genitalia and the gender to which they identify (American Psychiatric Association, 2016).

“Trying to change their mind about their gender can be detrimental as this may lead to their feelings of nonacceptance.” The conflict that can often result is a person feeling extremely uncomfortable with their body, which can lead to feelings of inadequacy, self-loathing,

30

Supernal Magazine

anxiety, depression and possibly lead to very serious issues such as self-harming or suicidal ideation. Due to the seriousness of the distress, Gender Dysphoria has been classified as a recognised mental health issue that requires psychological support and treatment. GD, when it relates to adults and adolescents, is described clinically as significant emotional and psychological distress which lasts more than six months with at least two (2) of the following according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders DSM5, 2013: 1. A marked incongruence between one’s experienced/expressed gender and primary and/or secondary sex characteristics 2. A strong desire to be rid of one’s primary

and/or secondary sex characteristics 3. A strong desire for the primary and/ or secondary sex characteristics of the other gender 4. A strong desire to be of the other gender 5. A strong desire to be treated as the other gender 6. A strong conviction that one has the typical feelings and reactions of the other gender It is normal for children to experiment with gender roles, meaning that children tend to like to dress as the opposite gender or to role play specific societal gender roles. GD in children is where the child expresses distress and feelings of rejection about their body. Research has identified children as young as four years old may experience this. In children, GD is defined clinically as significant distress or impairment in functioning, lasting for at least six months and requiring six (6) of the following criteria: (DSM 5, 2013). 1. A strong desire to be of the other gender or an insistence that one is the other gender

mental health 2. A strong preference for wearing clothes typical of the opposite gender 3. A strong preference for cross-gender roles in make-believe play or fantasy play 4. A strong preference for the toys, games or activities stereotypically used or engaged in by the other gender 5. A strong preference for playmates of the other gender 6. A strong rejection of toys, games and activities typical of one’s assigned gender 7. A strong dislike of one’s sexual anatomy 8. A strong desire for the physical sex characteristics that match one’s experienced gender Gender Dysphoria does not affect all gender diverse children, adolescents or adults; however, it is important to seek help if you recognise signs of severe and ongoing distress.

The best way to be supportive involves simply being there to listen, being open and non-judgemental. We all know what it’s like to feel judged - it is a certain barrier towards effective communication and feelings of safety. Listening and communicating openly will help with a sense of belonging and assist a positive self-image. If you are sitting with your own conflicting feelings, it is best to put those aside to process later and simply be present for them. It is encouraged to share uplifting feelings about what you love and value about who they are as a person and to provide reassurances about the way you love and value the person.

“It is normal for children to experiment with gender roles.”

It can be useful to acknowledge that you appreciate how difficult it How to support and where to has been to talk about this and how happy you are get help? they have felt safe to do It may be challenging to so. Trying to change their know how to provide support mind about their gender for someone who is feeling can be detrimental as this conflicted or distressed may lead to their feelings of about their assigned gender. non-acceptance. A person

is more likely to become withdrawn, anxious or depressed in mood if feeling they are not accepted.

“What can I do to support you right now?” If you feel unsure where to start with the conversation – try some open questions like these; • It must have been difficult holding all these feelings in. How long have you been sitting with these feelings? • What can I do to support you right now? • Have you spoken to anyone else about it or do you feel comfortable telling other people? Supernal Interview

Olivia Morton Beyond the Binary This month, we’re shedding some light on lesser-known aspects of the gender and sexuality spectrum. We’ve interviewed Olivia Morton, a vibrant young person who t finds themself identifying outside of the gender binary. Olivia has generously agreed to share with us some firsthand insight as to the challenges and advantages of choosing to live your truth outside of the gender binary. Interview by Rachel Watt

In society today, the two most dominantly recognised genders are male and female. To some, these are the only genders, as they are so closely blurred with concepts of the biological sex that each is linked to. The truth is, many people view the concepts of gender and biological sex as being exclusive from one another. Often, gender is considered to be a mental construct, while biological sex is something determined by physiology, chromosomes, and so on. Both are incredibly complex in their own right, however in the LGBTQI+ community this division is generally considered the norm. To one not well versed in the intricacies of gender as a spectrum, terms such as agender, nonbinary, intersex, genderfluid may seem alien and made-up. A deep-dive into history will reveal that genders other than male and female have

32

Supernal Magazine

existed long throughout human history, appearing all over the world - from the mythologies of ancient Mesopotamia, to inscribed pottery shards dating back to the Middle Kingdom of Ancient Egypt, the Hindu Manu Smriti manuscript from India, and spoken histories of two-spirit people from Native/Meso-America just to name a few.

When/how did you begin to realize that you identified as nonbinary? So, I pretty much always knew I was “gay”, and attracted to women, right – but like, as a younger teenager I started watching a lot of videos about transmen on youtube, and I felt like I could relate to a lot of the things they were talking about. Like their symptoms or whatever - eg. the gender dysphoria they experience, and I was like, oh..! That made sense to me because I’ve always felt an innate need to be more masculine, and I’ve always hated

having breasts. Then through that I came across the term nonbinary, and through that, agender - and I was like, wait is this even a real term or just a made up thing? But now I know that’s what I am.

What was the journey like? Were there any defining moments of realisation? To be honest, I can’t remember like a defining moment of going “Oh yes! That’s me!”, it was more of a gradual realization through learning more about this stuff. It was a bit of a bizarre journey, because I was wondering like… am I seriously this different from everyone? Y’know, because I hid being gay for a hot minute and with the gender stuff on top of that I kinda felt guilty that I had another thing to present to people, another reason that I wasn’t part of the ‘norm’. Initially I thought, “maybe I’m a trans man”, because I would get top surgery to remove my

interview breasts in a heartbeat, but at the same time I didn’t fully identify with being a man... Like, my gender expression is masculine – but that’s a different thing altogether, more the way I choose to dress/express myself aesthetically than my whole identity.

Do you have a preference when it comes to the pronouns people use to refer to you? To be honest, I don’t really care too much about my pronouns. Like, I don’t mind being called she/her because I’m biologically female. I know it’s easier for people who have known me that way all my life. Ideally I think I’d prefer just they/ them, but it doesn’t cause me dysphoria or pain to hear myself being referred to as she/her or he/him.

What does being nonbinary mean to you? I’m glad I found the terms nonbinary and agender,

because I do enjoy labels and I like knowing what‘s going on with myself. It just makes sense with me because that’s just how I’ve always felt, but without knowing those terms existed I felt I had no option but to conform to the binary. I feel like every nonbinary person is a little bit different in their expression and where they lie on the spectrum.

Have you encountered any difficulties in going about daily life while not identifying explicitly as male or female? Usually it involves other people getting embarrassed for misgendering me. Sometimes when they look at me they’ll expect a male voice, and get wigged out when it isn’t. It can be really hard to explain to people that while I’m not a man, I also don’t mind HE pronouns, and no, I don’t care that you thought I was a man. But then they’ll go “Oh, I’m so sorry, so you’re a girl then!” And I’m like “well, no, I’m not a girl either…” Truthfully I hate being called a girl, a daughter - any nouns associated with femininity I just don’t identify with at all. But at the same time I don’t feel a strong pull towards the male terms either. It happens a lot in public toilets for example, where I’ll have to reassure them, like “it’s okay, I’m actually a girl” – which kills me every time, but I just don’t have the energy to explain the entire concept of being nonbinary to every person I meet, and not everyone’s open to it.

If you could pick one thing about gender identity to make people more aware of, what would it be? Just that gender is actually a spectrum, rather than a binary, and for people to be more accepting of that idea. So many people just cannot or will not understand the concept. While I can understand people were raised that way… I still don’t see any reason to dismiss or invalidate someone’s identity just because it’s outside of that binary. Especially since you don’t really choose how you experience gender or your relationship with it, and it’s not a walk in the park to exist outside the norm. Idenfitying as agender is genuinely who I am, I truly don’t feel any connection to being male or female, Ultimately I’d say my gender… is Liv.

Reflections:

An Attitude of Gratitude Hello again. Last issue we looked at forgiveness - I hope you have set yourself free from ill-perceived ‘failure’ and are ready to move into exploring gratitude. In so many self-help books we are encouraged to practice positive thinking and to be grateful for what we have. When you actually think about it, we are very fortunate in many ways - we have choice, opportunity and free will. However there are times when it is all feels too hard and we want someone, or some other outside influence to take over and tell us what to do. Often we feel we have no choice but this is not the case, there are always choices. It’s simply that we don’t like the choices on offer in case they take us out of our comfort zone. Often, we make a choice without really thinking about its real implication. For example, when we are out

34

Supernal Magazine

to dinner trying to choose a meal, we may feel there is nothing we would like or that we are not hungry so settle for just a drink. Well, how lucky is that, when at least a third of the world population doesn’t have that opportunity; they don’t have the water or food that even makes it a possible choice. We can’t fix the starving millions of course, but we can acknowledge their problem with gratitude!

“Often we feel we have no choice, but this is not the case – there are always choices.” The normal concept of gratitude is that it will give us more, but I don’t feel it is as simple as that. By deciding we have a lack and asking for that space to be filled, we believe in the lack itself and that we don’t have the power to redress the balance ourselves. The cold fact is that if thought works that way, then we

have created the lack in the first place from the pattern of our beliefs. It’s an annoying concept, isn’t it that we control our reality by our thoughts; that it’s our responsibility! The word Gratitude is a number six when we reduce the letters to numbers. The number six refers to finding balance in our life. It tells us we are focussing our attention on the external material world such as our careers, finances, fitness and achievements to the detriment of our internal wellbeing.

health and wellbeing When we continually stress about what we don’t have, not only are we reinforcing our belief in lack and drawing it to us, we are also creating a disharmonious emotional balance that has the potential of becoming a physical condition. Even medical science is now telling us that the foundation of illness is stress-related. Finding balance between the material and spiritual aspects of our lives requires a shift in perspective. We can acknowledge what we do have but, more importantly is the recognition that what is missing also has a purpose. It gives us the opportunity to reflect on why we need that particular item or person in our life. What is the purpose of the lack?

“No outside influence can permanently and effectively change how we feel about ourselves long-term.”

we may hone it down to the fact that we have low selfesteem or self-value.

“Knowledge is the power to change our thinking and our life.” When we see this, we have found the gift in the lack. We must then acknowledge that no outside influence can permanently and effectively change how we feel about ourselves longterm; we also have to work on it ourselves. Without this recognition, the undermining thought pattern continues to sit beneath the surface scuppering every attempt we make to move forward in life. But it is not all doom and gloom - gratitude gives us knowledge and knowledge is the powerhouse behind changing our thinking and our life. Life is not hard – life is just life; an empty vessel that

we can fill with whatever we desire to have around us. It is the space within the vessel that makes it fit for purpose. So, why not choose joy, peace, balance and good health to fill that inner space? We are taught that we are wrong and so we strive to be right. What a waste of time and energy, when all we really need to do is immerse ourself with gratitude in the joy of being alive and look at the untapped gifts that are available to us, because we are all deserving, amazing and wonderful; awesome beings, just doing our thing!

Jane Offer

As we develop this train of thought, we may find a belief that ownership of a material possession will give us more standing with those around us. We may believe that a partner in our personal or business life will make us happier and more able to fulfil our dreams. All very reasonable, but if we look deeper again, we may find that we have a belief that we are not acceptable, lovable or capable in some way to be happy without it. We may find we have a fear of being alone. Ultimately,

Gratitude is the fairest blossom which springs from the soul Supernal Magazine

Discovering Ayurveda By Liesl Horne

Winter spices from the comfort of your kitchen Winter provides a wonderful opportunity to make the most of your kitchen herbs and spices. More than just adding flavour to your cooking, they can help to improve digestion and balance your Doshas. Ayurveda often refers to winter as ‘Kapha Season.’ This is because the qualities of cold and damp prevail the same qualities that are reflected in Kapha Dosha. If the climate where you live is cold and dry during winter then Vata Dosha, with the same cold and dry qualities, can also become more prominent. The key is to notice the subtle signs that your body is giving you. If Kapha is your primary Dosha, being cosy and warm indoors will be naturally comforting but you may feel congested and heavier due to these qualities increasing during winter. A Vata dominant person can benefit from the heavier, grounding qualities of winter, which helps to balance their naturally light constitution. The challenge for Vata individuals is that they often

38

feel cold, so the drop in temperature makes them feel even colder. For those who have more Pitta in their constitution and generally feel hot, the cooling qualities of winter can be a relief. Being naturally active, you may long for the outside activities that the warmer months bring. A guiding principle of Ayurveda teaches that like increases like and opposites decrease or balance. Warming and stimulating foods help to counteract the Kapha qualities that are prominent at this time of year. Most spices are pungent, which is one of the six tastes in Ayurveda. Common winter time ailments are colds, congestion, feeling sluggish

and lethargic. Making use of your kitchen herbs and spices may help to ease these ailments and restore you. Winter spices to boost your wellbeing Ginger Ginger is a perennial lily, indigenous to tropical Asia. With its heating, rejuvenating and anti-inflammatory properties, Ginger is particularly supportive to the digestive, respiratory and circulatory systems. It helps to cleanse toxins and stimulates the secretion of digestive enzymes. Fresh Ginger is relieving to aching joints and helps to clear congestion from the lungs. Dried Ginger is more heating with a sharper effect on the digestive tract. Pitta

health and wellbeing constitution should have dry ginger in moderation. Taste: Pungent and sweet. Turmeric Native to South-east Asia, Turmeric is a perennial herb of the ginger family and has a broad range of therapeutic properties. The compound curcumin provides anti-inflammatory properties and is responsible for making Turmeric yellow. It helps to lower cholesterol and is a natural antibiotic which strengthens digestion and intestinal flora. Turmeric is an anti-oxidant with immune enhancing and detoxifying properties. Taste: bitter, astringent, mildly pungent. Black Pepper Black pepper is also native to South-east Asia. With its stimulating qualities, it helps to improve circulation, supports digestion and the absorption of nutrients. Black pepper is an antioxidant and a decongestant which helps to eliminate mucus and lower blood pressure. Taste: Pungent. Cinnamon This warming herb is native to India and Sri Lanka and comes from the inner bark of the Laurel tree.

Cinnamon is also stimulating and helps to counteract congestion, increase vitality and supports digestion. It has antiviral and antibacterial properties and is also antirheumatic. Cinnamon helps to relax muscles and relieve spasms and cramps. Taste: sweet, pungent and astringent. Cloves Native to India and Indonesia, cloves are the aromatic dried flower bud of the evergreen clove tree from the Myrtaceae family. Cloves are good for treating indigestion and are a tonic for the spleen. They support the digestive, respiratory and lymph systems in particular and help to increase blood circulation. Cloves help to boost memory and relieve gout and coughs. Taste: Pungent. Cardamom Cardamom is native to India and is a seed of a perennial vine related to ginger. It enhances digestion and helps to rejuvenate the spleen. With antimucus qualities, it helps to remove phlegm from the lungs and the stomach. Cardamom is recognised as an anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic.

Recipe: Spiced Chai Ingredients: Fresh ginger - thumb size 2 sticks of cinnamon 1/2 tablespoon of cardamom pods 1/2 tablespoon cloves 1 tablespoon of brown sugar or coconut sugar (Alternatively, add unheated raw honey to your cup) 2 teabags or equivalent of loose leaf tea 2 cups of Milk 3 cups of Water Method: Bruise the ginger slices in a mortar and pestle and place in a medium sized saucepan. Break the cinnamon sticks and add to the pan along with the crushed cardamom pods, cloves and brown sugar if using. Add the water and the tea bags. Simmer for 20 minutes with the lid on. Pour in the milk and simmer. Turn the heat off before it boils, strain and remove the tea bags. Simply enjoy! Until next time, keep well and stay nourished.

Healthy Seasonal Foods What’s in Season for May and June?

Carrots and Persimmons

Seasonal Vegetable –

Crunc hy Carrot

Carrots are often thought of as the ultimate health food. We were all told by our parents to “Eat your carrots, they are good for you,” or “Carrots will help you see in the dark.” In fact, this was a fair stab at the truth; even though they will not help us see in the dark, just one carrot provides slightly more than 20 percent of Vitamin A required for good eye health. Records through artwork and documents can trace carrots back to 5000 years ago in the area now known as Afghanistan, where it was grown as a medicine rather than a food. It was a small, forked purple, white or yellow root with a bitter, woody flavour, quite different from the orange carrot we know today. No one can pinpoint exactly when the first carrots “Carrots are often thought of as the ultimate health food.”

40

appeared, because they were mistaken for parsnips, a close relative of the carrot. However, purple carrots are making a comeback and are delicious as well as attractive on the plate. The orange carrot we are familiar with was developed by Dutch growers originally to honour William of Orange who led the Dutch in Revolt against the Spanish in the late 1500’s when they won their independence to form the Dutch Republic.

for a main meal or cut them into sticks for a snack with a dip, they add colour to your dishes and are very yummy. Two fun fact about carrots: If you slice the top off a carrot, there is the pattern of the eye clearly visible. Many vegetables and fruits give a hint, through shape or colour, as to their benefits by resembling the part of the body it supports. Mel Blanc, the voice of cartoon character Bugs Bunny, disliked carrots!

Carrots are extremely nutritious offering 25 calories, 6 grams of carbs and 2 grams of fibre. They are also loaded with beta-carotene, a natural chemical that the body changes into vitamin A and antioxidants that research is beginning to show can help the body to resist cancer.

Health, Well-Being, & Holistic Healing Arts By Joti Gore

The Healing Power of Turmeric Today more than ever, our society is looking for ways to ease pain, inflammation and discomfort. Turmeric or Curcuma Longa has been used in traditional Indian Medicine for centuries for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial and antiseptic properties. Curcumin, an active compound in Turmeric, is known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity that can promote healing within the body.

Skin Disorders, Dermatitis & Acne In Ayurvedic medicine, Turmeric has been used for many decades to treat skin conditions. In 2016, Drexel University and the University of California Sacramento dermatologists proved that in 10 out of 18 cases of acne, cases were remedied through the use of Turmeric as treatment.

44

Supernal Magazine

Acne is caused by an excess of bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes which has become more resistant to antibiotics, therefore Turmeric has been an effective, natural holistic alternative for treatment. The Formula: 1tsp of Aloe Vera juice and 1/4tsp of Turmeric. Mix into a paste, place it onto the problem areas and leave it on for 15 minutes. Wash it off and repeat this treatment three times a week for one month to see results.

Strengthen or Boost your Immunity Turmeric can boost your Bio Immunity. How you may ask? Good Question! Turmeric can activate your immune cells, specifically your T-cells, B-cells, Macrophages, and Neutrophils. Ohio State University researchers found Turmeric in food and pill form is not the best for strengthening immunity. Is it the right combination? Your liver recognises it as a poison and if the Turmeric is not combined properly, the liver gets rid of it. Yes, I did say poison!

The Formula: Place 1/3 cup of Turmeric and 2/3 cups of water in a sauce pan heat it for 10 minutes then, put it in a sterilized jar and store it in the refrigerator. Dilute 1 to 2 teaspoons of the liquid, in a glass of warm water and add a little honey. The Curcumin element of Turmeric will dissolve and easily enter the blood stream and the tissues. Drink this formula once daily for health prevention.

Sore Throat & Laryngitis An Oral Pathology Scientist, Dr H. S. Judge at Punjab University of India, discovered that the antimicrobial properties of Turmeric extract can halt parasites and reduce throat inflammation. The Formula: 1tsp of Turmeric and 1tsp of sea salt in a glass of hot water which you use to gargle three times a day until you feel better.

Joint Pain Relief & Arthritis In 2016 Dr. Chin of the Department of Pharmacology Malaysia’s Centre studied the effect

health and wellbeing of Curcumin on joint inflammation. The study involved arthritic patients and used Curcuminoids and enhanced Curcumin. The result indicated less joint pain, more mobility, a better quality of life, and prevention of joint diseases.

The Formula: Drink 1 glass of cold water with 1/2tsp Curcumin, 1/2 tsp black pepper and 1 slice squeezed lemon a day for prevention. However, it is not recommend if you have any diagnosed stomach disorders.

Approximately 350 million people worldwide have arthritis. Nearly 40 million people in the United States are affected by arthritis, including over a quarter million children. More than 21 million Americans have osteoarthritis while 3.85 million Australians have arthritis, which is 1 in 5 Australians.

Weight Loss & Obesity Prevention

The Formula: 1tbsp of Turmeric powder, 1tbsp of honey, 2 to 3 crushed garlic cloves and apply to the area for 15-20 minutes for minimum of three weeks.

Improve Mood and Brain Function Researchers of the University of California led a study for people 51-84 years old to take curcumin twice a day and administered cognitive testing. At the end of the trial, they discovered staggering improvement which led them to believe that it would advance support for age related brain and mood related disorders and diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and stroke.

The most common question asked is about weight loss. This is an extremely touchy subject. In 2015 the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry shared that the Korean Study revealed that curcumin alters the composition of fat cells. So the unhealthy white cells turned into the healthy brown cells. The Formula: 1/2 teaspoon of Turmeric to 1 glass of milk. Drink every morning and night to speed up metabolism and suppress appetite. Conclusion In conclusion there are no systems, magic pills or perfect formulas that are effective for everybody. There is no substitute for living a healthy lifestyle, consistently eating clean food, exercise, rest, sleep and including researched supplementation is the only true formula to have a balanced healthy life. The Aussie

An Objective Look at Subjective – The Home The expression ‘Home is where the heart is,’ is a very apt one when it comes to the subjective meanings behind the home. The heart of the home is within us, regardless of where we reside and if we consider our body is our home, our temple, then dreaming about various parts of the home can open up the mind to very different ways of understanding the messages we are receiving. Think about every single room in the house, the way the décor is set, how clean

things are, is there a meal being shared at the table or is there a burst water pipe in the toilet? It’s all relevant to understanding the information subjectively. Let’s create a dream: There is a couple standing in a kitchen that has very dim lighting. A man is standing next to the bench with very little food on it and the food that is there is dark and unappetising. Where the woman is standing there is a lot of food mostly vibrant greens and yellows. They are having a discussion when the hot water tap blows off and water starts shooting all over the kitchen. While the woman panics, the man walks over to the tap, looks under the bench and turns off the water. “The expression ‘Home is where the heart is,’ is a very apt one when it comes to the subjective meanings behind the home.” This creates an interesting dream to interpret. The kitchen is a place of nourishment and it should be a clean, bright and happy

space. The fact that it’s not very bright in this situation can mean the couple aren’t having much fun in their relationship any more. Another tell-tale sign that things aren’t right is the food. The woman is eating vibrant foods that represent the heart (green) and the ability to take things in and understand them on a mental level (yellow). The man’s food is dark and heavy meaning he might not be well and his nourishment is coming from a dark aspect with the possibility of depression within. The tap blowing off is the emotional release and being hot water the emotions may well be angry and heated between them. The fact that the man finds a solution to stop the emotions flowing and becoming a real issue means he’s willing to try and get things back on track. It also says he is a person that doesn’t panic when things take an emotional downturn – which could be good or bad, of course. Essentially they couple are trying hard to sort things out on a soul level, hence the dream, plus it gives clues to both of them on how to do it. “The heart of the home is within us regardless of where we reside…”

dreams There’s always more to an interpretation, such as the clothing being worn, the shoes, the style of kitchen, did it get brighter after the water was shut down? These all add up to creating a bigger picture of understanding for the dreamer. Basic Home Interpretations I have selected a few home interpretations from the book, Practical Mediumship – A Guide to Understanding Psychics, Mediums, Dreams and Physical and Metaphysical Information.

Children’s bedroom/s – Youthful aspects of self. Nursery – New beginnings and growth. Toilet – An aspect of self, to let go of emotions and other problems in life. Shower – The ability to cleanse or clear the physical. Bathroom – A room or part of self that is dedicated to being clean and fresh, and not holding onto life’s issues including family specific issues. Ensuite – This is the same as bathroom, however, it specifically relates to relationships with a partner, husband or wife.

House – Self and all aspects of self. Double storey – Size matters and a double story house represents wealth, character to some, but the term ‘McMansion’ is used these days as it’s a status symbol to some people who may not necessarily have wealth. Family Room – A meeting place to share ideas/life in a social way. Kitchen – The place to nourish the soul and body. Master bedroom – The room for intimacy.

Plumbing – The ability to flush away issues (toilet) and cleaning (i.e. doing the dishes, washing clothes in a sanitary way that leads to minimising bugs that could lead to disease). Electrical – The wiring reflects your body’s thoughts and electrical circuits. Sheds – The ability to store the implements (thoughts) used to live a specific life. Potting shed, parts shed and general storage sheds all reflect different thoughts processes. Doors – Opportunities in life.

Chairs – Stability and comfort. Phone – Ability to communicate on a one-onone level. Windows – Allow for vision into the world around us. Mirror – Reflections of self and the ability to scry on the outside world. There are so many more aspects of the home that can be interpreted. It’s simply amazing and is only limited to one’s imagination! “The kitchen is a place of nourishment and it should be a clean, happy place.” Next month we’ll explore the various objective and subjective understandings of the motor vehicle in greater detail. Attracting Your Ideal Clients Dr. Brooklyn Storme PhD

L

isa (not her real name) was a life coach. She had been in business for about six months and was experiencing difficulty enrolling clients into her coaching programs. She was doing what would normally be perceived as all the right things turning up on social media regularly and offering content to her audience, systems were in place to facilitate marketing and other business activities and she was running Facebook Ads. All of this

but still no takers. So, what was going wrong? While speaking with her, it became clear that Lisa did not like marketing. Getting in front of the camera to go live on her Facebook page was daunting. Lisa held great fears around saying the wrong thing, being judged, being heckled or worse. She also doubted her ability to deliver meaningful content and questioned whether or not she was ‘good enough’ to be doing this.

It was as if she had Imposter Syndrome. So, when she came to me, Lisa was in a quandary. On the one hand feeling angry, confused and wanting to give up and on the other hand wanting to give it one last attempt. I tried my best to calm her down. Lisa was very apprehensive about mindset work because all her life she’d had an action-oriented approach. Now here I was, trying to teach her about the value of not taking so much action and re-directing that energy into more creative paths. Attracting clients is really only hard or difficult when it feels uncomfortable. You see, we each have an internal guidance system (a term coined by Esther Hicks) that tells us when things are ‘right’ or when they are ‘off’. When the outside world is not matching up to how we know we should be feeling on the inside, we feel that incongruence as resistance, disappointment, frustration, confusion or heaviness. By teaching Lisa about the value of tuning in to her inner guidance system or intuition and practising with small goals to begin, she was able to experience for herself that it was safe for her to be guided by her

48

Supernal Magazine

business intuition. I think that one of the tendencies we have is to launch into action as our ‘go to’ when we don’t really know what to do. And there is a Law of Masculine and Feminine Energy. In general, this concept has been wellexplained in the past by thought leaders such as Carl Jung with his work on archetypes and was explained prior in historical documents dating back to Roman times. Masculine energy has been described as really being focussed on providing, doing, taking action and protecting while feminine energy has been described as being more focussed on creating, nurturing, cultivating and caring. It’s important to understand that we all have both masculine and feminine energy and this energy ebbs and flows all of the time. If you look closely at your business and how you have been operating, I wonder if you can identify your behaviours as being more in the masculine or feminine flow? By embracing this idea of energy duality, Lisa was able to allocate time and tasks that allowed her to embrace her creative side more. She realised that by pushing herself to do marketing activities, she

was putting herself out of alignment with the things that felt good for her. She found that she much prefers blogging. We were able to set her intention, create a goal and put together a content plan that felt right for her. She now dedicates time each week to prepare her posts and she loves doing it. Lisa told me that she smiles when she blogs - what a fantastic turnaround!

like Lisa. By being aware of the feeling you have around your work activities, you can find a way that will align better with your true self, with your authentic self and see that in doing so, you will easily begin to attract the right people to work with you. This is not the only way to call in ideal clients but it is an excellent first step.

The best breakthrough was that the blogging created an audience and part of this audience was converted into clients. Lisa was able to monetise the blog and work with her ideal clients, all from a place of ease, grace and flow, doing something that she is passionate about.

Am I operating from a place of predominantly masculine or feminine energy?

So, the real lesson I want to convey today is that you can attract the clients that you want to work with, just

Self-reflection questions:

How is this impacting my business? What could I do differently? Happy manifesting. Dr. Brooklyn Storme

Signs Signs from the spirit world are one of my favourite subjects. I will share some with you that still amaze me to this day. One very important thing to mention is that our loved ones in spirit will do anything to let us know that they are around. Signs can be anything from white feathers, butterflies, dragonflies, birds – Willy Wagtails in Australia and Robins in the UK seem to be the most popular. Seeing repetitive numbers are also a common sign: 11.11, 1.11, 2.22, 3.33 and so on. The spirit world can also use forms of electricity, whether it is flickering lights or via a radio. Have you either been in your car or at home when a song comes on that reminds you of a loved one or a song that was played at their funeral? I know

50

Supernal Magazine

these sorts of occurrences have happened through evidence in my own readings and that of my recipient’s and colleague’s. Spirit will also leave objects on our pathway to find. How many of you have smelt a familiar smell, whether it is cigarette smoke, perfume, aftershave or a certain smell that brings about a memory of your past loved one. By giving you examples of my own different experiences it will truly help you understand how amazing the spirit world is. After my mother’s diagnosis of terminal cancer, she shared with me a code word so that she could let me know that she had arrived safe in heaven. I did not tell a soul, not even my siblings, nor my children. A day after my mum had passed a friend of mine phoned me from the other side of the world to see how

I was, she then said for some reason I have to say “Blue, Blue something or maybe Bluebird? I don’t know why?” - but I knew, as my mum’s code word was Bluebell, so I then knew she had arrived safe! Shortly after I was in my car and thinking of my mum and the car in front of me had the number plate ‘Bluebell,’ so again another sign. “…our loved ones in spirit will do anything to let us know that they are around.” After my beautiful 18yo cat passed (my mum loved him), I said to mum in spirit several times, please give me a sign that you have Ollie. I went to the local shops still asking mum for a sign. I get back to my car looked to the left and the car number plate next to me read ‘Ollie 16’ again amazing and thanks Mum! I do quite often say to people that although our

mediumship loved ones in spirit draw close at times, they are not interested in seeing us in bed, on the loo or in the shower. The next story will undo this! I read for a lady who had recently lost her husband who told me that he was leaving five cent coins for her everywhere and she replied ‘yes in last two weeks, every day I have found one, but can you believe this morning I was in the shower and one came over the top and landed at my feet’. So, this example made me say to her, “Well he was your husband so could see you in the shower,” which bought about much laughter! These signs provide us with powerful evidence that our loved ones are trying to communicate with us. them know she had died. After shedding many tears I used to sit with mum in the and finally pressing the garden when she was ill and ‘send’ button the Robin a Robin would always come card opened with what close and I would say to her, seemed to be a gust of “That’s grandma she (her wind in my lounge room mum) is keeping an eye on and the tweeting noise you!” This continued most began. I looked at the days. Sadly, I had to return open card with my mum’s to Australia for a while and written words in front of me a week later I received a “Thought of you.” Another lovely card from my mum remarkable sign! with a Robin on it. When I opened it, it tweeted like you “Spirit will also leave objects on our pathway to find.” were indeed in a garden. My mum’s words were; “I saw I quite often say either out this and thought of you.” loud or in my mind; “Mum can I have a sign please After my beautiful mum to let me know you are passed, I had the task of around,” and without fail emailing everyone to let

I get sent a dragonfly or I smell her distinctive perfume. For those of you wanting signs from your loved ones just put a thought out to them and be patient, it will happen, and always remember to say, “thank you”. Next month I will discuss what to expect in a reading. Until then, Yours in Spirit

Divine Time

‘Feelin’ Groovy’ was the song, but feeling slightly awkward can amount to something or nothing over the period 17th June to 25th July. Don’t take flight just yet, even though we begin this space of time with the energy of Kin 236 Magnetic Eagle. Eagle stands very powerfully on the ground as well as surveying its magnificent territory from the air. It does not take off with a fright and flight attitude in order to escape, it surveys and flies to cover the broader view, utilising expansive vision and the ‘seers’ advantage, in order to target and hunt successfully. As with all magnetic tones which begin new wavespells (13 days) of time, the

52

intended power is to set off down the path guided by ‘one’s own power doubled’ This is a reminder that, as we move forward from a thought which becomes an idea which eventually takes form, this form may not be fully formed and may not be truly in touch on our personal vibration. We are lucky that an ‘I’ve changed my mind’attitude is always an option. “Eagle stands very powerfully on the ground as well as surveying its magnificent territory from the air.” Suddenly lives and perceptions change, as the eagle eye sees what is not yet visible to the naked human eye and psychical

perception allows the target to appear within range, where vison, intention and action become unified. Travelling through June, having walked the road less travelled, the sky is now the limit. But that is a conundrum as we insist there is no limitation, we constantly speak of infinite possibility which comes with the very eagle vision we are pertaining to here. ‘Such is life’. Awkwardness, and decisions, confrontations and agreements are so important now in all areas of your life as unification is required to bring a sense of completeness, release from old and dire patterns and indicates that a ‘New Law’ is coming. The Law of Timelessness, which really comes under the banner of ‘Lore’.

divine guidance

The Natural Law of Time insists we take notice of the New Year cycle, that the Ancient Galactic Maya, the True Time Keepers, left for us to perceive (albeit with modern mind and limited viewpoint) star patterns as wisdom and knowledge, encoded within the pyramids of prophecy. This is the age of such prophecy and that can create awkward moments in time, when faced and confronted with outmoded points of view from those whom wish to see no further than their own noses. This is fear-based behaviour denying the order of change. It enables outmoded ways, laws and wears the same old hat. Putting on a new hat, such as an artist’s beret, is utilising the power of creativity. If you set the intention to shine, illumined from the inside rather than just the outside creating surface glitter (which eventually wears away), all will be well. Do not fear, the artist is here.

Down by the midway arcade we travel into Magnetic Star and when all is said and done it can transfigure, transform and transpose old negative paradigms which are what this specially programmed year of 2019 is all about. 2019 is a three vibration. “Awkwardness, and decisions, confrontations and agreements are so important now in all areas of your life as unification is required to bring a sense of completeness” It takes care of us spiritually, mentally, emotionally and creatively. If we use that eagle vision, we see everything is aligned and striving to bring us as ‘humans being’ into the fold where the answers are written, like an origami fortune telling game. The outcomes rely on the choices we make and what we ourselves have allowed to unfold. The 13th of July says ‘Lucky for some, 13’. I imagine and manifest into form. With the power of primal force, a foundation is set. The input of birthing gives a new sense of purpose and once again, with the tone of magnetism, following my own power fiercely and with undivided attention, I unlock the potential that has so far been no more than a secret

store within my own divine code, my blueprint and my being. I will remember to rest and assimilate over this latter period of July, making adjustments and checking what is my reality rather than what is simply being portrayed by the overwhelming matrix of expectation and duress from society. A day out of time comes to all on the 25th July. Red Cosmic Skywalker kin 13 (lucky for the ‘sum of all’) having endured in order to explore, transcending wakefulness and sealing the output of space with the cosmic tone of Presence. I find now I am guided by the power of navigation and ready to explore the New Year Cycle of Natural Lore. I am birthed, I am nurtured, I am Being. I am that – I am. Numbers: 13 and 8 – from manifestation of a foundation that which is small has infinite potential. Wavespells: Eagle, Star and Dragon. In Lak’ech ala k’in-‘ I see You, I am You.’

Numerology June is number 6. The silvery moon beams and loves dreams. There are lots of plays and puns for the 6th month of a 12 month calendar. We acknowledge 12 astrological houses and in June Gemini and Cancer come into play. We’re half way through the year that feels like it’s only just begun, causing us to feel the pressure of burdens we unnecessarily carry and changes in attitudes and relationships are key. June 2019 aligns with the number 9. throw out the rubbish, clear the clutter and embrace only heart. Pick up the broom, clear cobwebs from windows so her silvery beams can shine in and light up the very

Prepare ye the way, that which warms the and dust from floors, ground you walk on.

Six is representative of the womb, success, iconic realisation, burdens and the feeling of being overwhelmed. Throw the dice, get out of jail free with a six and you realise the bars were bendy anyway, only you held them in place!

Quote of the Month “Openness may not completely disarm prejudice, but it’s a good place to start.” – Jason Collins

Jason Collins’ 13-season career in the NBA would be more than enough to justify his fame, however he is best known for his decision to come out as the first openly gay player in the NBA - and in major team sports in the USA as a whole. Collins penned an essay titled ‘The Gay Athlete’ for Sports Illustrated in 2013, which served as his official coming-out and touches on how being open to concepts of sexuality tends to begin with education, and often leads to understanding and acceptance. In 2014, he appeared on the cover of Time Magazine’s ‘100 Most Influential People in the World’ issue.

Though now retired from basketball, Jason spends his time as an LGBT activist as well as mentoring closeted athletes and Hollywood celebrities through their own journeys towards coming out in the public eye. Jason’s essay is available to read at: https://www.si.com/more-sports/2013/04/29/jason-collins-gay-nba-player
