Brown Spots in your Lawn? Two common causes

This time of year can bring challenges to your yard. From bugs and fungus, to animals looking for a free meal, they can keep you on your toes. Two common issues that cause brown patches in the lawn are fungus and grubs. How do you tell the difference?

Grubs

are a nasty little pest that lives underground. After the larvae hatches, they move up in the soil to feed on the roots of the grass. This will usually happen around June, July & August. Damage to the lawn is seen in late August and early September. In early fall they burrow down to escape the cold – too deep for any pest control to reach them, so it’s best to treat for grubs earlier than that. If not treated and killed, they will return the following year much more robust, fat and sassy, and ready to feast on your lawn again. Since they are hiding in the soil, it’s best to keep an eye out for them by the signs they leave behind. Some of these will include: • A spongy lawn - This will usually happen before anything else, but isn’t always a sign that you have grubs, since this could be the result of over watering.

• Signs of animals looking for a quick meal - Raccoons, Moles and Skunks love grubs. It is a nuisance for them to tear up your yard looking for a meal, but it can be helpful clue for grubs. • Spreading brown patches in your lawn that never turn green. Pull at these patches and the grass comes up with very little resistance and root structure, or like rolled carpet.

Fungus

is generally brought on by improper watering practices. Water that sits too long on the lawn encourages fungus, so it is best to water in the early morning and not at night, when any excess water doesn’t evaporate off. Here are a few signs to look for to spot a fungus problem: • Spreading brown patches - Try the same pull test on the brown patch of lawn that we outlined for grubs. With fungus damage the grass stays put, instead of coming up easily. • Malleable Grass - If you can step on it and the grass doesn’t snap back up, you could have a fungus problem. The goal for a fungus issue is to stop it before it can spread to your entire lawn. Treating the fungus as well as changing watering schedules can help.

It you have any grub or fungus concerns, give us a call! 435-773-6456 or landscape@swmlife.com Click the links for more content!

What does your diamond

Say about you? What it says about you

Round diamonds are the most popular of shapes chosen (accounting for approximately 75% of all diamonds sold), its classic & simple design is made for maximum sparkle! Distinguished by their 58 facets and a 360-degree symmetrical shape, geometrically, the “Brilliant Round” diamond is ideally suited to maximize light return. The circular shape of the round diamond is said to signify love without end.

What it says about you

Invented in the early 1960s by Arpad Nagy, princess-cut diamonds offer a similar brilliance or sparkle of a roundshaped diamond, but in a square shape. The most popular fancy shape, princess cut diamonds are designed to maximize sparkle while maintaining a chic square shape and are the 2nd most requested diamond-cut style.

What it says about you

With an elongated design, oval diamonds came on the market in the late 1950s. They offer the sparkle of round stones in a dazzling silhouette. These are the most ideal choice for those who want a uniquely shaped diamond that accentuate long & slender fingers.

You are known for your simple elegance ~Traditional ~ Laid-back ~ Honest

You are known for being flirty & lively ~Fun-loving ~ Spontaneous ~ Intelligent

A cushion-shaped stone will have a square-rectangular cut with rounded corners & large facets. Also known as “pillowcut,” this antique style cut has a classic, romantic appeal. Synonymous with royalty, cushion-cut diamonds are coveted for their distinctive soft shape and brilliant facets that create a dazzling kaleidoscopic effect that catches the light and emphasizes the stone’s beauty. This was a very trendy shape in the 1980s.

What it says about you

Emerald shape diamonds have long facets & layered corners that resemble stairs. Due to its large step-facets, inclusions and body-color are much more obvious to see with the naked eye in this shape. This popular style is best known for its beauty & precision because the long lines of the stone accentuate its sophistication.

What it says about you

This graceful, elongated diamond was developed in France in the 1740s, legend has it that it was named for the Marquise de Pompadour, a mistress of King Louis XV. Because of its shape and 56 facets, a marquise cut will look larger face-up than a round diamond of equal weight. It is also a popular choice as the shape makes fingers appear longer and more slender.

What it says about you

Pear shape diamonds have been around for centuries, but it wasn’t until 1886 that Tiffany introduced the modern pear shape we know today – a very stylish & bold mix between a round and marquise-shaped diamond. The beautiful, tapered shape can make hands look slimmer and more graceful. The pointed end of a pear shape diamond engagement ring should point towards the heart of the wearer.

You are known to radiate strong and effortless style ~Straightforward ~ Hard-working ~ Sophisticated

You are known for not being afraid to break the rules ~ Creative ~ Edgy ~ Theatrical

You are known for being adventurous and fun ~ Devoted ~ Calm ~ Adaptable player

Grill Cleaning Don’t Skip this Step

The same char broiling action that flavors ribs, chicken, steaks and burgers can really cause problems if you don’t stop and clean the grill once in a while. Grills are notorious for becoming clogged with all the delicious drippings you’ve been sizzling. A dirty grill is also a fire hazard. According to the National Fire Protection Association, U.S. fire departments respond to an average of 9,600 home fires involving grills, hibachis, or barbecues per year, so it’s a very good idea to ensure your grill is clean and maintained.

Make sure you thoroughly clean your grill at least once a year: •

Soak the grill grids in hot, soapy water and clean them with a nylon scrubbing pad. If the grill grids are really encrusted, use oven cleaner in a well-ventilated area and rinse clean.

If your gas grill uses lava rock, remove each year and throw them away. Lava rock will disintegrate, clogging your gas grill’s burners. It can also hold grease which can cause fires.

Remove the grill burner, brush it clean and check carefully for cracks, split seams or holes. If any are found, the grill burner should be immediately replaced.

Lastly, check all the grill’s rubber gas hoses for cracks and replace any that show the slightest sign of wear.

Now your home improvements are complete, and you are ready to eat!

The Joys of

THRIFITING! Wandering Families Looking for fun adventures? Follow along as we share the best! @wanderingfamilies

My husband, John, and I love to do different things for Date Night. One of our favorite activities when we’re kid-less is thrift shopping. In fact, when we’re on vacation, we always make a point to stop at a local thrift store to see what we can find. The ritzier the area the better the thrift store is going to be. Our all time favorite places are the ten thousand Goodwill stores in Portland. If you were to come into my house and start snooping through things probably about 85% of my stuff is second hand. I love it! So here are my favorite things to find at a thrift store:

--I always start out at the glassware and serveware. I love milk glasses and I’ve found dozens of little pieces to add to my growing collection. --Next we check the videos and tapes. Yes, we still have a VHS player and a cassette tape player. We love tapes because we don’t have to be as careful with them as DVDs or CDs. Just be sure to open the case and make sure you’re really getting what you think you are. One time I bought “What about Bob” and ended up with “Winnie the Pooh.” Bitter disappointment. --Skim through the games section. Usually the games are complete and just a couple bucks. My kids only play a game a few times before it gets shelved, so at $2 I don’t feel too bad about it. --I never look at furniture or appliances. They are usually not worth the money. --After we hit those high points, John and I split up in the clothing section. He likes button up, vintage cowboy shirts. I like to have something in mind that I’m looking for. Like right now I’m looking for pencil skirts and graphic t-shirts (my uniform this summer). --Last of all we end up at shoes. I know some people have issues with second hand shoes. I absolutely have no issue. I just wipe them out with a wipey and call it a good deal. Seriously you guys, I have like a hundred of the cutest shoes you’ve ever seen. They are ALL from thrift stores. You just can’t beat the prices. We’ll spend like $50 and come home with six bags full of treasures. It’s the most fun!! And yes, John did buy that whole outfit! Click the links for more content!

How asset-based long-term care works Currently nearly 70 percent of people over the age of 65 will need long-term care in their lifetime. Who would take care of you? How would you pay for long-term care? Life insurance with asset-based longterm care benefits could help your family maintain its quality of life and give you a comfortable level of care. Will you need long-term care? The statistics say more than likely. With the life expectancy continuing to grow, those statistics will grow stronger. While the numbers say you should prepare for long-term care, how you will pay for it is becoming complex. Medicare, health or disability insurance, long-term care insurance, reverse mortgages, life insurance are just some of the possible sources, but can also have limited benefits. Another option many be life insurance with asset-based long-term care benefits that is meant to provide for long-term care needs while also giving the owner benefits beyond that level. Some reasons life insurance with asset based long-term care benefits might be of interest to you include: • It can be purchased for a single person or two people with benefits available for both • Premiums never increase and your benefits cannot change • Because it is built on life insurance, your policy’s death benefit goes to your beneficiaries if you don’t use it for long-term care • Long-term care protection becomes available when you cannot perform two of the following activities of daily living: bathing, dressing, eating, continence, toileting, transferring or if you have cognitive impairment (such as Alzheimer’s disease) • Choose protection for a specific number of months or get extended, guaranteed lifetime benefits as an option • A broad range of qualifying long-term care expenses means you can receive care in your home, use adult day care facilities or stay at a nursing home or assisted living facility. Covered care also includes qualifying hospice care, respite care, caregiver training and supportive equipment

How much long-term care protection do you need

The amount of long-term care coverage you need will depend on your retirement funds, other incomes, part of the country you receive your care and the type of care you want. 10 l www.swmlife.com

A number of those parameters are moving targets. Some are not. For example, women average longer long-term care needs (3.7 years) than men (2.2 years). When it comes to creating an amount of coverage, here is a series of questions that can help you narrow the range of the coverage you may need in the future: • • • • • • •

Has a family member ever needed long-term care? Is there a family history of long-term illnesses? Does the long-term care policy need to cover the entire expense? What changes need to be made to your home for long-term care? How much of your care can be provided by family? Are you willing to enter an assisted living facility or nursing home? What assets do you want to pass along?

Social Security Scam

(Names and numbers have been removed and/or changed to protect the identity of those involved) On 05/10/2022, at approximately 0800 hours, officers spoke to Betty Smith via the phone for a fraud call. Betty said on 05/09/2022, she received a phone call from ###-###-#### from a person claiming to be with the Social Security Office. The person she spoke to advised Betty that someone was using her SSN# to open numerous accounts with different banks and had been charging money to those accounts racking up $85,000 in fraudulent charges. The person advised Betty she needed to wire approximately $85,000 to ABC Lawn Care and when she received a new SSN card she would get her money back. Betty said she questioned the validity of the claim and asked what the lawn care company had to do with the situation. Betty said the person became angry with her and told her to contact the St. George Police and that we would confirm they are real. Betty said she called what she thought was our police department and spoke to a female sergeant who told her the person she was talking to was legit. I asked Betty if both people had strong accents and she said yes. Betty wired the $85,000 as requested. Some time afterward, Betty realized she had been scammed. Betty called 911 to report the scam. Betty said she was going back to the bank the next morning to see if they could reverse the wire. I provided Betty this incident number and asked her to call me back with the results. Betty called me back and stated the bank had not yet sent off the wire due to system issues. Betty said they canceled the wire and she has not lost any money. I called the above number and the phone was answered by a male with a thick Indian accent. It was clear from the background noise that it was a call center. This is a common style of scam aimed towards the elderly which is being conducted by individuals overseas. Please stay vigilant as these groups make a lot of money preying on the elderly in our communities and are very difficult to catch. This is not a few bad apples, there is an entire industry of scammers whose primary occupation is getting unsuspecting people to send money. If you are ever concerned about any suspicious phone calls, please speak to a trusted relative or contact the police department at 435-627-4300 before sending any money or giving information. Remember that you are in control when you’re on the phone, you can always hang up.

Neighborhood Watch Diana Juarez has 10 years of hospitality management experience, and it shows in her work for SunWest.

Created in 1972 by the National Sheriffs’ Association to combat rampant petty crime, the Neighborhood Watch program was founded on the idea to encourage residents to become involved in crime prevention by acting as the eyes and ears of law enforcement in their own neighborhoods. The success of the program has established Neighborhood Watch as the nation’s premier crime prevention and community mobilization program.

Not only does Neighborhood Watch allow citizens to help in the fight against crime, it is also an opportunity for communities to bond through service. The program draws upon the compassion of average citizens, asking them to lend their neighbors a hand. After September 11, 2001, there became an even greater awareness of the need to strengthen and secure local communities. Where are the Aliens? The Fermi Paradox takes its name from Nobel Prize-winning physicist Enrico Fermi, creator of the first nuclear reactor and a vital part of the Manhattan Project to develop the atomic bomb. In 1950 he and several colleagues were discussing the chances of discovering intelligent life in our Milly Way galaxy. While various people were expressing personal opinions, Fermi was making simple calculations on a paper napkin. He quickly realized that with so many sun-like stars in our galaxy, there must be many earth-like planets. At the end of the discussion about extraterrestrials, he simply stated, “Where are they?” Observations from the Kepler Space Telescope confirm Fermi’s calculations. Most stars have planetary systems. In just a few short years, Kepler detected over 5000 exoplanets, planetary bodies orbiting stars in our galaxy. Astronomers now suspect that there might be up to 300 million earth sized bodies with the potential of having liquid water. Most biologists feel that once you have the long-term existence of liquid water, the chemistry of our universe allows life to develop. If life is so abundant, why haven’t we discovered another intelligent civilization? That’s the Fermi paradox. It could be possible that life does not necessarily develop in most liquid water environments. Life might be a lot rarer than we anticipate. However, if life does typically develop in a liquid water environment, something must inhibit life from developing great intelligence and advanced technology. Astronomers call these inhibitors “great filters.” Next month you’ll learn about “great filters,” and why the discovery of life on Mars, Jupiter’s moon Europa, or Saturn’s moon Enceladus, might actually be bad news for humanity. You won’t want to miss the coming July edition. Ron Smith has spent his career lecturing and teaching astronomy, meteorology, and earth science. In retirement, Ron continues to enjoy sharing his love of science with others. 14 l www.swmlife.com

What is the

SCARIEST ride you’ve experienced? Tell Us About It!

and enter to win tickets to a Tuacahn show!

Splash Mountain by Sandy N.

The scariest ride I have been on is Splash Mountain in Disneyland. What, you say that isn’t scary? I have to disagree. It was the first ride I had been on. EVER. I watched people on the ride, and although the drop looked scary, everyone seemed to make it through laughing and clapping, so I gave it a whirl. The ride lulled me with a nice, gentle, floating story, and it wasn’t until we were climbing up to the final drop (a long, dark tunnel where all you could see was a bright spot of sky at the top) that I realized I didn’t have a seat belt on! After a frantic search I came to the horrifying realization that my seat didn’t have a seat belt! As we climbed higher and higher, my mind frantically combed through every physics rule I could think of. Would gravity be enough to keep me from flying out? Was it possible my puny fingers – currently dug into the bottom lip of the boat so deep I’m surprised they didn’t leave permanent impressions – would be strong enough to resist the forces coming my way in a few seconds? And just how far was this drop? The climb seemed much larger than what I observed from the ground! If the ride would have paused even a moment, I would have bailed – never mind the PA system telling people to stay seated. Luckily, I didn’t bail, and I survived the ride! And I hopped immediately back into line to do it again – hyped up on the adrenaline rush of living through a or terrifying experience. So began my love affair with theme park rides. I have ch f ides t a W yr been on more extreme rides since, but nothing has generated the pure scar ext e r n mo terror of that very first ride on Splash Mountain. ing com nth! mo Click the links for more content!

Flower: Rose The rose has long been a symbol of love, beauty, and affection. Each color rose holds a different meaning. A red rose means ‘I love you’ and is a sign of romance; pink represents happiness and admiration; a white rose symbolizes innocence and purity; orange means desire and excitement; yellow represents cheer and happiness, while a red and white rose paired together has come to symbolize unity.

Utah Events

Birthstone: Pearl The pearl has been a source of many legends for millennia. Some legends say that the pearl represents the tears of angels in heaven, while others believe they are the tears of mermaids. Greeks associated them with the moon and Greek lunar deities. According to astrology, pearls are associated with the planet Venus and symbolize love, beauty, and wealth.

How to Help a

Grieving Family

I get so many people asking what ideas I have for helping someone who just lost a loved one. We all care, we just don’t know what to do or how to help, and we really don’t want to make anyone feel worse. Several years into my own grieving process, I have a few ideas. Please feel free to share this page. We all will experience some form of loss or death - it’s just part of life.

Right after the death happens:

- Send a quick text or email showing love and concern - if you don’t send this message, the person will wonder why. I did. I really was hurt by some close people that didn’t even mention the GIANT elephant in the room. It’s so devastating to lose a loved one. Lots of LOVE is needed to sustain the family dealing with this burden and every text is welcome. What if everyone said, “oh I don’t want to bother them”. The family would feel pretty lonely and unloved. The family probably won’t answer you back and if they do consider yourself lucky, but keep checking in anyway. - Do something, anything. Don’t ask the family how you can help. They won’t tell you and will say they are okay. No one likes to ask for help and most have a very hard time accepting it. Anything you do for the family will be very much appreciated and nothing is the wrong thing to do. - Offer to take pictures at the funeral and at the cemetery. Every picture will be so precious and important...even the casket ones, if they want this. A professional would be best, but any photos will do. Lots of family and friends will be attending so pictures will be welcome. - Deliver a care basket with finger foods such as rolls, cheese and meat, granola bars, muffins, apples, grapes, oranges, trail mix - things to eat quickly but allows them to still get energy to do what they need to do. The family coming into town might not have time to go shopping, so this will really help. Remember to include paper goods so there will be no cooking or dishes that will edd to be dealt with. - Offer to watch their children or pets so they can make funeral arrangements. There are so many details to work out, it’s so exhausting and it all has to happen in a matter of a few days. - Clean their house and put flowers all over while they are at the hospital so they will come home to a bunch of love. - If you are a close friend or family member, ask to help pay bills and organize this area of their life. The bills will keep piling up and it gets overwhelming, so a clear head might help the situation and relieve some stress.

18 l www.swmlife.com

- Start a fund account, especially if it was a young or unexpected death and unplanned for. Many funds take a portion, so I found the best way to send is directly to the family’s bank account. - Offer the extended family to sleep at your house. They may have already paid a last minute expensive price for airfare, so if you can save them money on hotels this would greatly help out. Or offer your skymiles for the family to use. This will be greatly appreciated. - If you have extra money, you can offer to pay to print the programs, or pay for headstone, the burial site, or the casket. You can pay for the flowers, a funeral dress for the mom, or the dinner afterward for the family. You could pay for the plane tickets, the hotels, or the medical bills. It’s so unfortunate after a loved one dies, the pain is so heavy and you feel as though you have lost everything, and then you are slapped with all these never-ending bills that you never wanted. So monetary gifts are always appreciated.

Some more ideas

-Mow their lawn -Make sure their garbage gets out to the curb -Bring over a home cooked meal -Put up luminaries in their yard to honor their loved one -Bring over cookies or brownies -Offer to answer phone calls and the doorbell -Send a fuel card -Pray for the family or put their names on a prayer roll -If you don’t know what to do, just offer a giant HUG!

A few weeks or months after the death:

-Take them out to lunch -Keep checking in and showing love -Offer to babysit so they can have a moment to grieve -Bring over flowers to brighten their day -Sit and listen while they cry or talk -Say their loved ones name often -Remember birthdays and special events -Ask how they are really doing -Don’t expect them to keep commitments -Don’t be offended if they don’t call you back -Acknowledge that they are sad and having a hard time -Ask about their loved one that died, favorite things, personality, favorite memories, etc. -Just be a constant friend

**Remember, everyone grieves differently and it is a life-long journey. Let the person grieve how they need to and don’t push them to “get over it already”. Some people don’t accept service well, so don’t be offended if they don’t seem to appreciate it. They really will welcome all the love shown and the effort made.

Why are some plants restricted by my HOA? Every homeowner wants their home and community landscaping to look healthy, green and cared for. So why prohibit any plant? The more the better, right? When purchasing a home in a community with an HOA, you agree to join other owners to share amenities, pay your share of expenses and maintenance, and uphold certain standards. So when the decision is made to restrict something, there is usually good reason for it. Here are some reasons Associations prohibit certain plants: Community Standards require a uniform appearance – If you were attracted to the consistent look of the community when you bought your home, odds are there are rules in place to preserve that appearance. Invasive or grow too big for the space – Fast growing plants can quickly outgrow their space, and others will spread to other yards where they are not wanted. A restriction can prevent the cost of maintenance, replacement, and conflict between owners.

Kamarie Naase, PCAM®, CMCA®, AMS®, is a Pro-

fessional Community Association Manager who has been affiliated with SunWest Management and the SunRiver Communities for over 20 years.

Surface roots – Community hardscape, walls, sidewalks, and streets can be negatively impacted by tree roots. The cost of repair can be significant, adding insult to injury for the community and homeowners. Hazard or liability – Very brittle trees that frequently drop branches, or plants with large thorns and sharp leaves can cause injury to people or damage to property. Associations will often want to avoid the risk. Too messy, poisonous, or prone to disease – Some plants and trees will flower and drop seeds several time a year. Frequent debris removal and the high maintenance of dealing with disease prone plants can be costly. There is also incentive to avoid the risk of children or pets vulnerable to poisonous plants. Water or maintenance restrictions – Waterwise and low maintenance plants are strong reasons for having restrictions, especially in the desert. The cost and shortage of water is obvious, but there is also an increased cost for maintenance. Nonnative plants can drop leaves year round, requiring frequent debris removal. Local climate and soils – Not all types of plants can grow everywhere. What you hoped would be a beautiful, lush plant can end up looking straggly in the wrong climate or soils. Community living comes with lots of benefits and access to amenities & services, but it also requires that residents give up a bit of their individuality to live in harmony with others. Working together, residents can find moderation….and it’s good to remember there is usually a valid reason behind a restriction. 20 l www.swmlife.com
