A court here has dismissed a suit seeking a ban on the sale of a Gujarati book in which author Jayesh Shah, a Congress leader, has allegedly mocked Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Civil court judge A M Dave cited Article 19 of the Constitution and dismissed the suit on Monday, holding that banning the book, titled “Fekuji Have Dilli Ma (Fekuji is in Delhi now)”, would violate the fundamental right of freedom of expressionThe book dwells on a list of promises made by Modi during his campaign for 2014 Lok Sabha polls and claims that he has failed to deliver on them. The suit demanding ban

on the book was filed by a social worker Narsinh Solanki, who contended that the book is meant to “defame” Modi. Solanki alleged that the contents and the title of the book are defamatory and derogatory in nature and they would spoil the image of the Prime Minister. According to Solanki, Modi came to power just two years back, a timeframe too short to fulfil all the promises he made during the poll campaign.

Solanki sought the court’s intervention to put an immediate ban on the sale of the book, which is in the market since last few months. However, not convinced with the arguments of Solanki, the judge said that India is a democracy and people have all the right to express their personal views through a book. The court held that banning the book would violate the right of freedom of expression.

“There is no more terrible thing than to live and have one’s being under the shadow of a man-eater...” wrote the legendary Jim Corbett in his classic ‘Maneaters of Kumaon’ in 1944. Fear sinks deep in a countryside which is known to harbor a man-killing big cat. Many a wildlife enthusiast in recent months has shown a brisk readiness to assail any move by Forest Departments across states to deal with such ‘problem’ animals. While vigilantism serves to keep the system on its toes, sweeping and indiscriminate criticism only compounds the challenges in wildlife management. Man-animal conflict is a complicated issue, wherein history, culture and religion, socio-eco-

nomic aspects, forest and revenue land interface, myriad governmental jurisdictions, an expanding human population and its needs all play their part. It is hence important to segregate it from the issue of immediate and day-to-day wildlife management. The latter, which needs prompt and effective action, cannot be held hostage to the intransigence of the former. Nothing impacts the long-term success of wildlife conservation like

local community support and goodwill, and prompt action to protect this sacrosanct pillar of conservation becomes inescapable in cases of conflict, most imperatively in that most grave of circumstances: a human kill. This rather wide detour was to give context to the subject at hand: why conservation of the Asiatic Lion in India’s Sasan Gir National Park and surrounding areas is one of the world’s greatest conservation success stories.

cent state executive of the party in Mehsana recently, the district executives would also be completed soon, he said. Announcing programmes of the party in the coming days Rupani said that from July 4 to July 6, 24,000 party workers would be visiting 48,000 booths, often accompanied by senior party leaders. “The workers will hold meetings at the booth level,” he said. “On July 4-5, there will be a meeting of party MPs, both from RS and LS, at Ahmedabad which will be attended by party leaders like V Satish, Dinesh Sharma, CM Anandiben Patel and me. Various issues like the role of MPs, their issues and MPs’ Adarsh Gram Yojana will be discussed,” he added.

This will also enable the health department with the early detection of birth defects, and provide their remedies when possible. To implement this decision, the health department has issued a directive on June 10 to all districts stating, “District hospital, sub district hospital or wherever the sonography machine is available and for gynaeocologist or radiologist are also available to conduct sonography, at such places it is important to conduct sonography of each pregnant w omen at least once.” “From this, we can identify pregnancies with higher risks, keep a tab on

the development of foetus, identify if there is any abnormality in the foetus, and provide required medical assistance. So, sonography should be conducted on every pregnant woman at least once in the second and third trimester,” the directions issued by the department further stated. “Though the availability of a gynaecologist and a radiologist is essential for conducting sonography at government health cen-

tres, the department has even allowed the same to be conducted at a private radiology centre in case of non-availability of medical expert or infrastructure. This is basically aimed at economically lower sections who either cannot afford the medical assistance or are not aware about these medical check-ups that should be undertaken on a regular basis,” said additional director (family welfare) Dr N B Dholakia.
