A technical glitch with the signalling system has been identified as the cause of Friday’s devastating train crash in Odisha’s Balasore district that left 288 people dead and over 1,000 injured, according to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. Speaking to reporters, Mr Vaishnaw confirmed that the underlying issue was related to the point machine and electronic interlocking system. The electronic interlocking system - a technical term referring to a complex signal system designed to stop trains colliding by arranging their movement on the tracks - malfunctioned, leading to the fatal incident. “It is about point machine, electronic interlocking. In a detailed dossier submitted to the CM, the minister noted that the officer has a long history of being on radar of CBI, Central Vigilance Commission, CBI, and the vigilance department for several incidents of corruption, and is in habit of keeping unauthorised possession of sensitive vigilance files for “ulterior motives.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is leading from the front. In every natural calamity – disasters and now the tragic rail accident in Odisha’s Balasore – the prime minister has time and again proven that the face of governance has changed. It’s more of a ‘whole of government’ approach and not to forget the ‘humane approach’ of the entire team.Apart from sending two top union ministers – Dharmendra Pradhan and Ashwini Vaishnaw – to the accident site, Prime Minister Modi held a high-level meeting and immediately rushed to the accident site. The opposition raised all sorts of questions, but generations have seen the tragic accidents and visits by earlier rail ministers.According to government sources, such visits in the pre-Modi era were more of a photo op than monitoring relief and restoration works. In the past, we saw that rail ministers’ actions were only limited to photo ops during accidents. Sources said ministers like Mamata Banerjee played politics even then. Here, we have a railway minister who has been at the spot over the past 30 hours and is tirelessly involved in rescue and relief. He is monitoring the investigation into the cause of the accident and keeping the PM informed on all the developments. While the accident is gruesome, a stark contrast is how all agencies are working together unlike the silo approach in the past. Railways, ministry of home affairs and officials of National Disaster Response Force are working in sync. The health minister is also on the ground and trying to ensure that all facilities are being provided for medical treatment so as to minimise the loss. Even Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik is working in close coordination with the central team, which has smoothened out rescue and relief operations. This has set an example for other states as well. While the opposition was engaged in spreading propaganda on reasons behind the accident and implementation of Kavach, the government was proactive and transparent. Not only did the government share details about the accident, it has also been transparent with the number of casualties.Even before PM Modi’s visit, top government sources brushed aside the opposition’s allegations of a collision of trains and made it clear that it was the derailment of only one train – the Coromandel Express – that impacted the stationary goods train in the loop line and the last few coaches of the Yesvantpur Express. Both the trains were travelling at the same speed and the losses were minimal in the Howrah-Yesvantpur Express. Vaishnaw is still at the spot and entirely in the grip of the situation. His presence along with the PM’s continuous monitoring has ensured that inquiry and rescue operations are complete. Now the target is to restore movement of trains on the affected lines. Every accident teaches a valuable lesson, but the Narendra Modi-led government, with its healing touch, has certainly sent out a message that this is the government with a humane approach.

Having endured some tough days in the past couple of years, the 34-year-old is back to firing on all cylinders. Under his leadership, India did reach the final of the

previous edition of WTC but they lost to New Zealand and this time around, he would be hoping to help his side go all the way. While Virat has struggled a little bit with English conditions, with Chapell recalling the 2014 and the 2021 tours of the UK, he also pointed out how the current conditions would favour the talismanic Indian batter.

FPIs inflow in India stock market at 9-month high in May. What to expect in June?

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) have pumped in over ₹43,000 crore in Indian equities in May, which is the highest investment in nine months by FPIs. Foreign investors have been buyers across sectors with massive investment pumped in financial services stocks. The trend in FPIs is likely to continue ahead, which does bring a possible case for the Nifty 50 to touch a new record high. As per the NSDL data, FPIs inflow in Indian equities comes to ₹43,838 crore in May. This is not just the highest monthly buying of 2023, but also the highest

since November last year.

“FPIs were aggressive buyers in the Market in May having invested ₹43838 crores through the stock market and primary market put together

now the consensus overweight among all emerging markets.

In May, India attracted the largest investment among all emerging markets, and FPIs were sellers in China,” said Dr. V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services.

He said that FPIs are likely to continue their investment in India in June too since the latest GDP data and high frequency indicators reflect a robust economy gaining further strength. Financials, automobiles, telecom and construction are the ones attracting big investments. The possibility of continued robust buying from FPIs could drive the Nifty 50 to reach high levels. “Nifty racing to the all-time high of 18887 and breaking the record are highly possible in the next few trading days. But at record levels, selling pressure is likely since valuations will emerge as a concern,” he added.

Excise case: High Court to pronounce order on Monday on Sisodia’s interim bail plea

Agency News: New Delhi

The Delhi High Court will on Monday pronounce its order on AAP leader Manish Sisodia’s plea seeking interim bail for six weeks in a money laundering case arising from the alleged excise policy scam. The former Delhi deputy chief minister has sought release on a temporary basis on the ground of being the sole caretaker of his ailing wife. His plea for regular bail in the matter is pending before the high court. Sisodia, who was arrested on March 9, is currently in judicial custody in the case lodged by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The verdict on the interim bail plea will be pronounced by Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma. It was reserved on Saturday when Sisodia’s lawyer had claimed that pursuant to the court’s directions passed on Friday, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader was taken in custody to meet his wife earlier in the day but the latter’s health

condition deteriorated and she was taken to be the LNJP Hospital before he could reach home.

The ED has opposed the plea for interim bail on the grounds of possibility of evidence tampering.

The federal agency’s lawyer has also claimed that Sisodia’s wife has been suffering from a medical condition for the last 20 years and even earlier pleas for interim bail on identical grounds were withdrawn by the former minister. The Delhi excise policy was implemented by the AAP government on November 17, 2021, but it was scrapped at the end of September last year amid allegations of corruption. On May 30, the court had dismissed Sisodia’s bail plea in the excise policy scam case being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), saying he is an influential person and the allegations against him are very serious in nature. In the CBI case, the high court has kept the interim bail plea pending.

Pakistan is using a mix of social media, local influencers and narcotics to radicalise the Kashmir youth to pick up the gun but Army has launched various people-friendly initiatives to counter the propaganda of the inimical elements, a senior army officer has said. General

Officer Commanding of Army’s 15 Corps Lieutenant General ADS Aujla said the attempts from across the Line of Control (LoC) to push narcotics was a cause of concern as it was destroying the future generation of Kashmir. “Social media plays a very important role in this (radicalisation) and that is where the western adversary

The officer, who has spent considerable part of his career in Jammu and Kashmir, said besides social media, the local cadres of Jamaat-eIslami also play a major role in the indoctrination of the youth. “The local Jamaatis, they also play the major role in radicalising the youngsters. So, a combination of both of these gives them (youths) this high of falling on a wrongful path or joining a tanzeem or picking the weapon and doing something wrong,” he added.
