For Chief Minister Anandiben Patel, this was the first political test since she took charge from Modi last year. Urban Gujarat voted the BJP back to power with the party winning in all six municipal corporations, and many municipalities.

But in rural areas, people voted for change, giving a chance to the Congress which won in most districts and was leading in the taluka panchayats. In the urban centres, the BJP won in the Patidar constituencies, though its ward-wise tally, compared to 2010, was down in the municipal corporations. Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel on Wednesday said the BJP will have to analyse the reasons for its poor performance in the local body polls in the rural areas of the state. “Though we have done well in municipal corporations and municipalities, it is also a fact that the results in district and taluka panchayat bodies are not up to the expectations,” Patel admitted while addressing the party workers outside BJP office in Khanpur area here. “We have been doing several developmental works across Gujarat. We have also undertaken an exercise to strengthen the party organisation. Still we have to now analyse what went wrong. We will

find out and address these problems,” she said. The Chief Minister received a grand welcome at Khanpur office as the BJP has retained the six municipal corporations: Ahmedabad, Bhavnagar, Surat, Jamnagar, Vadodara and Rajkot. The Chief Minister, though, expressed some disappointment for not surpassing the previous tally of 151 at the

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. “We have won in all the six corporations with a thumping majority… Of the 56 municipalities, we have captured 40 while eight went to Congress. People used to say that BJP will get only 80 to 90 seats in AMC (of the total 192), but we have captured 142,” Patel said.

Home minister’s speech trivialised the fight for gender justice and against caste hierarchies

On November 30, 1949, four days after the draft of the Constitution was finalised, the RSS’s Organiser wrote, “The worst about the new Constitution of Bharat is that there is nothing Bharatiya about it… Manu’s laws… excite the admiration of the world and elicit spontaneous obedience and conformity. But to our constitutional pundits that means nothing”. It would seem that decades later, the dreams of the RSS to turn India into a theocratic state ruled by the laws of Manu or those laid down by the Vedas are alive and kicking, as revealed by none other than Home Minister Rajnath Singh, the opening speaker on behalf of the government in the discussion on the Constitution on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of B.R. Ambedkar. He was there to pay tribute to Ambedkar, but his words ended up paying tribute not to the Constitution or its founders, but to what his parent organisation wished for India. How else can you explain his atrocious attack on the very concept of secularism? It was not just a debating point on the “misuse of the word secularism”. He charged that this very misuse has led to “difficulties in the maintenance of social harmony”. He asked “could there be any greater democrat than Bhagwan Ram?” He explained: “A person on the last rung of the social ladder raised a question and Ram made Sita, more beloved than his life, go through the agnipariksha”. The home minister believes in replacing history with mythology but even within this framework, he is saying that the notion of “dharma”, as laid down by the scriptures, is real democracy. For Rajnath Singh, Sita’s travails were immaterial. The scriptures lay down that a woman is subordinate, an appendage of the male and, therefore, if she is treated as though she is not human, then that is the highest democracy, because it helps the ruler uphold “dharma”.
