“Today’s results are a stepping stone for a Congress victory in 2017,” said Ahmed Patel
BJP retains urban, Rural gives Congress In the urban centres, the BJP won in the Patidar constituencies, though its ward-wise tally, compared to 2010, was down in the municipal corporations : Congress making an impressive comeback in rural Gujarat Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad
Surging ahead in 19 of 31 district panchayats of Gujarat, the Congress looked set to make a comeback in rural areas of the state while the ruling BJP held on to the urban centres as trends of elections to the local bodies polls continued to come in Wednesday. Decimated from every tier of the power structure in Gujarat after going down to the BJP in election after election in the state during Narendra Modi’s
tenure as chief minister, the Congress called it a “verdict against the BJP government”. The outcome of the election was being closely tracked by both parties given the backdrop of the Hardik Patel-led Patidar agitation for reservation. For Chief Minister Anandiben Patel, this was the first political test since she took charge from Modi last year. Urban Gujarat voted the BJP back to power with the party winning in all six municipal corporations, and many municipalities.
But in rural areas, people voted for change, giving a chance to the Congress which won in most districts and was leading in the taluka panchayats. In the urban centres, the BJP won in the Patidar constituencies, though its ward-wise tally, compared to 2010, was down in the municipal corporations. The Rajkot municipal corporation saw the closest fight with the BJP winning 38 and the Congress winning 34 wards. A Muslim candidate on a BJP ticket was among the winners
We must analyse setback in rural areas: Gujarat CM Anandiben Patel Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad
Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel on Wednesday said the BJP will have to analyse the reasons for its poor performance in the local body polls in the rural areas of the state. “Though we have done well in municipal corporations and municipalities, it is also a fact that the results in district and taluka panchayat bodies are not up to the expectations,” Patel admitted while addressing the party workers outside BJP office in Khanpur area here. “We have been doing several developmental works across Gujarat. We have also undertaken an exercise to strengthen the party organisation. Still we have to now analyse what went wrong. We will
find out and address these problems,” she said. The Chief Minister received a grand welcome at Khanpur office as the BJP has retained the six municipal corporations: Ahmedabad, Bhavnagar, Surat, Jamnagar, Vadodara and Rajkot. The Chief Minister, though, expressed some disappointment for not surpassing the previous tally of 151 at the
Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. “We have won in all the six corporations with a thumping majority… Of the 56 municipalities, we have captured 40 while eight went to Congress. People used to say that BJP will get only 80 to 90 seats in AMC (of the total 192), but we have captured 142,” Patel said. “In the last election we won 151 seats. I wished
we would surpass that, but we could not. This is not a big issue. Some seats sway here and there. Overall we have done well in all the six corporations,” she said. Though the counting is not yet over, Congress was leading in 18 of the 31 district panchayats. In 230 taluka panchayats with a total of 4,778 seats, it was leading in 2,204 while BJP was ahead in 1,798 seats.

while in the Ahmedabad municipal corporation, the BJP’s Muslim candidates, contesting for the first time, were defeated. The BJP won municipalities in 25 of 29 districts while the Congress won in the districts of Amreli, Mehsana, Patan and
Vadodara and the contest was close in Anand, Morbi and Surendranagar districts. The verdicts in Amreli, Morbi and Vadodara were being attributed to the say the Patidars have. The Patidar unrest and anti-incumbency seemed to have largely reflected
in the district panchayats and taluka panchayats. The Congress was winning 19 of 31 district panchayats, covering huge ground by winning 568 seats, while BJP trailed with 360 seats. In the October 2010 elections, the BJP won over 540 seats.
