GIVING BACK INTO THE COMMUNITY:

Erik Boe, treasurer of the Spur Community Foundation and Managing Director, Principal at Robertson Stephens Wealth Management, sits down with Sally Gillespie, Executive Director of Spur, to discuss the history, success, and future of the foundation in Sun Valley and how people can get involved.

Erik: There are many people who are aware of the Spur Community Foundation but for those who may not know much, let’s start with the history of Spur.

Sally: Spur was established in 2016 by community members who believed two things – 1) philanthropy is one of the most powerful forces for community vitality in a resort town and 2) local philanthropy would grow significantly if the marketplace worked better for people who prefer to give with purpose and intention. We observed that many people find the landscape of nonprofits confusing to navigate. They simply didn’t have the bandwidth to research the needs of the community, evaluate various giving opportunities or monitor the impact of their donations afterwards. At the same time, many local non-profits were unprepared to meet the expectations of these more investment minded donors. In recognizing these gaps, we saw an opportunity to create a resource for donors and nonprofits that would generate more funding and better outcomes for the community.

Spur’s mission is to inspire effective philanthropy in the Wood River Valley. We do this in three primary ways: 1) Expanding funding to the non-profit sector by encouraging residents to give where they love to live 2) Assisting donors by giving purposefully and impactfully and 3) Fostering excellence and accountability among non-profit organizations.

Spur is the first community foundation established specifically to benefit the Wood River Valley. Like other major mountain resort communities, we found a community foundation can prove to be a powerful engine for the area.

Erik: What makes Spur different than other community foundations?

Sally:: I think Spur has two primary differentiating factors that add tremendous value for donors: 1) Our rigorous assessment process of non-profit organizations and 2) 100% of contributions go to nonprofits because we don’t charge fees.

Let’s first talk about our assessment process. In order to advise people on effective giving opportunities that match their interests, Spur needs to have a deep level of understanding about each local nonprofit. We have implemented a rigorous 360-degree review process for local non-profits that functions like a mini accreditation. Nonprofits participate voluntarily to share an in-depth look at their programs, goals, governance, finances and operations. It becomes a mutually beneficial experience where we learn an organization’s priorities, strengths and weaknesses, and it gets supportive feedback from us that helps them advance. This process helps forge a relationship with the nonprofits that plays a crucial role in our ability to curate.

The second differentiating factor I believe is that 100% of donations to any of Spur’s funds are able to be granted out to charity. Since the beginning, we wanted to facilitate giving, and not depend on it as the way we support ourselves. So we don’t assess fees on contributions received, grants made or money held. Instead, we rely on our board, our advisors, and unsolicited contributions from grateful donors to cover our expenses. Our funding model is highly unusual, and there aren’t many that take the same approach. We are very committed to this model as it prevents us from being in competition with the nonprofits we serve. and provides donors the confidence that 100% of the money goes out to benefit nonprofit organizations.

Erik: How does Spur make its grants?

How the Spur Community Foundation is Making a Difference in Sun Valley

Sally: Spur makes grants from four types of funds, that vary primarily by the degree of involvement a donor chooses to have. The first type are discretionary funds. These funds have defined purposes from which Spur awards grants based on the merits of proposals it receives. Donors make donations into the funds that align with their giving interests, such as Arts, Education, Environment, Human Services, Housing, etc. and their gifts are pooled with other donations with the same purpose. It’s an option best suited for people who want to take a portfolio approach to their giving and entrust Spur to know where the money should be granted. The second type is Donor Advised Funds (DAFs). People who want active involvement in granting can open a fund with a minimum of $25,000, add to it when they want to, and then take time to figure out where it goes. A third type of Fund is our Pass-thru Fund. This fund is used by people, who for a variety of reasons, are coming to Spur for ideas where to grant. We curate ideas for them, and when ready, they make a contribution to Spur that immediately goes out to the recipient organizations. Lastly, we have Custodial Funds, like the Warm Springs Preserve Fund or the current one for donations to the firefighter and paramedic housing at Greenhorn Station on behalf of the North Blaine County Fire District. In cases like this, Spur functions like an escrow account, allowing people to make donations but also guaranteeing them that the money will only be released when the conditions for success have been achieved.

As of today, Spur has received contributions in excess of $18 million and granted $16.5 million.

Erik: What’s on the horizon for the Spur?

Sally: For the last several years, we have primarily been in start-up mode. However, now that we’ve had significant traction in the community, we are looking to expand the number of donors and resources by building a talented team to support the scaling process. We, ultimately, want to become a knowledge center for the Wood River Valley, providing people with the tools necessary to make a significant impact in the community whether it be in areas of specific interest to them, or to priority issues across the Valley, like housing, mental health, or equity of opportunity for disadvantaged populations. We will continue working to optimize philanthropy in our community by encouraging everyone to be invested in its future, which ensures the

Wood River Valley will always be a prospering place to live and visit. We dream of a day when people’s personal philanthropy in our community is proportional to how much they love and benefit from their lives here.

Erik: How can someone get involved in the Spur Foundation?

Sally: We’re always available to meet with people who want to improve their experience with local giving. We can help people find the right strategic approach relative to their needs and interests. Additionally, they can start by going to our website, www.spurfoundation.org, where they can learn more, find a sortable directory of local nonprofits and make donations to existing funds that are open for contributions. They can also send specific questions via our email askus@spurfoundation.org.

Erik: Thank you, Sally, for taking the time to talk about the Spur Community Foundation with us. I am sure everyone is excited to see the impact the foundation has on our local community. Your work has been inspiring not only to me but also to the rest of the Wood River Valley.

CARE AND RESILIENCY

It’s always said that it’s not if but when for wildfire in the mountains of Idaho. What appeared to be a fantastic coast through fire season quickly became very different as summer ended. We are undoubtedly living in a changing world, and our care for one another and resiliency is more important than ever. Yet, our choice to live in the beautiful environs of Idaho’s expansive mountain region means having to endure Mother Nature and her whims. As we move to winter, a season that brought so many of us to Sun Valley years ago, we move beyond the smoke and pray for snow. Meanwhile, there’s plenty to get us through the gray air and into a glimmering holiday mood while keeping health, community, and decency in mind and in check. A community is only as strong as its people, and many with big hearts genuinely care about one another because we are good humans—it’s in our Sun Valley makeup!

To start this issue of SVPN Magazine, we dive deep into this year’s Trailing of the Sheep Festival. Covering every angle and area of interest, we are excited to bring this event and all its fundamental interests to visitors and residents who take pride in a festival steeped in our Valley’s history and role in the sheep industry. Flip through the pages and take part.

This SVPN “tri-issue” also brings much to read, especially emphasizing the future. Learn about The Sage School’s new home at Quigley Farm, where a method of education that embraces adolescence sheds a welcoming light on the future. And while on the subject of lights, we connected with The Liberty Theatre Company and its campaign to Relight the Liberty. Hopefully, with enough interest, the doors can reopen this centerpiece to Hailey.

In another look at the Bald Mountain Stewardship Project, we check in with the National Forest Service to report on more efforts to take care of Baldy and the surrounding area as well as give back to those in need. And with the excellent benefit—more glades to ski and snowboard!

Up in Stanley, we find much to do in this shoulder season, but most of all, we appreciate those who have endured the wildfires to keep our northern playground safe—a huge shout-out and thanks to wildland firefighters and emergency services!

Browse our Now Showing and Art Etc. sections for new exhibitions, engaging events, and all-around happenings to keep you busy and connected, as there’s a great deal to do and enjoy. Don’t miss a spotlight on local artist Rudi Broschofsky and learn about his original and unique art and technique. From our wellness contributors, read about a new healthcare option from St. Luke’s, and Dr. Molly Brown opines on wellness for children when it comes to being back in school.

The Sun Valley Restaurant Association Dining Guide offers excellent seasonal delicacies, especially for Trailing of the Sheep—it’s all about the lamb. And we continue to provide real estate listings to keep you in the know on what’s hitting the market, what has sold, and what’s developing for the coming months.

SVPN will catch up with you in December, so in the meantime, be neighborly, lend a helping hand, and stay well.

‘Gretchen’s Fund’ will assist patients and their immediate families with expenses such as transportation, lodging, utilities, groceries, medications, medical supplies, and other necessary items.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Gretchen Palmer Patient Assistance Fund established at St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation

The Gretchen Palmer Patient Assistance Fund will support Wood River Valley patients fighting cancer and other serious illnesses. Unfortunately, many patients experience financial challenges while receiving necessary medical care. Even with health insurance, most people will have numerous out-of-pocket costs.

“Gretchen’s Fund” will assist patients and their immediate families with expenses such as transportation, lodging, utilities, groceries, medications, medical supplies, and other necessary items.

“The assistance provided by the Gretchen Palmer Patient Assistance Fund will help ease the stress of patients and families facing medical challenges and give them the ability to focus on their health and well-being,” says St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation Chief Development Officer Megan Tanous.

Terry Palmer explains the impetus for setting up the fund. “Cancer is a terrible disease. Any help we can provide to cancer victims and their families is exactly what Gretchen

would want. We, as a family, know that Gretchen is looking down upon us and hoping we can help other families in need.”

Terry adds, “My wife, Gretchen Palmer, the mother of our children and my partner for 39 years, was someone very, very special. And I mean, ‘Saintly Special.’ Her heart and spirit were open and pure. Gretchen was respected and loved by all in Sun Valley and beyond. She is missed by all. She was tough as nails and would like nothing better than to pay it forward. Our family is supporting the Gretchen Palmer Patient Assistance Fund as our way to pay it forward. The Palmer family has been privileged with many friends from all walks of life. We appreciate all the support needed to make ‘Gretchen’s Fund’ a meaningful contribution to relieve some of the burdens that cancer patients and families may face.”

TR AILING

THE SHEEP FESTIVAL 2022

OF
Welcome to 40 svpn-mag.com

We are so excited to bring the 26th anniversary year of the Trailing of the Sheep Festival to you. Five days of events, presentations, exhibits, cuisine, classes, music, sheep camps, and, of course, sheep are planned for you to come enjoy.

Not to be missed are the Farm to Table Dinners (Three offered this year, including a bonus night!) with lamb from local ranchers, Cooking with Lamb classes, Wool Fest classes, the Sheep Tales Gathering storytelling event featuring women in ranching, National Point Qualifying Sheepdog Trials, authentic Sheep Folklife Fair, Q&A with Idaho Ranchers, and the iconic and exciting Big Sheep Parade. Many of our events are free, or at a nominal fee, so they remain accessible to all. We genuinely thank the community for again voting us “Best Festival” for “The Best of the Valley” this year.

In 25 years, much has changed from our humble beginnings in this mountain town. Yet, the goals and objectives of the Festival remain the same—preserving the stories and history of sheep ranchers and herders, celebrating the rich cultures of the past and present, and entertaining and educating children and adults about the production of food and fiber that have sustained local economies for generations.

The Festival was created in 1996 in response to the rapid loss of farms and ranches and growth in Idaho and the West. With a sense of urgency, we work to preserve the stories and our rich history before they are lost.

Once again, we hope you will gather and celebrate with us and create your own memories and stories this year.

PERSEVER ANCE & PERSPECTIVE

Sheep Ranching History

42 svpn-mag.com

Raising sheep is one of Idaho’s oldest agricultural traditions, an industry that began within its territorial boundaries a decade or so before statehood was granted in 1890. With an abundance of open range, sheep ranching helped kickstart the original economy of the state. In 1918, the sheep population reached over 2.5 million, almost six times the state’s human population. Not until the 1970 census, after a significant decline in the sheep industry and an influx of new residents, did human numbers finally exceed sheep in Idaho—700,000 to 687,000. Liz Wilder, Executive Director, Idaho Wool Growers Association, says, “The primary nucleus for the state’s inventory was within the Wood River Valley extending south to Gooding and west to Mountain Home. Even now, the sheep industry continues to be an important piece of our state’s modern economy.” Today, Idaho ranks sixth in the nation for total sheep inventory, just shy of a quarter-million sheep within our borders.

But the more times change, the more they stay the same. “Throughout the industry’s 130-year history, the challenges continue to be public land access, grazing rights and availability, marketability of the product, both in the wool and lamb sectors, and predator issues,” says Liz. “It’s the same issues, just a new era.” Add a global pandemic and U.S. economic shutdown to that mix— creating an overnight 40% drop in demand for domestic lamb—and the industry is climbing out of a two-year hole. “In Idaho, we lamb from January through May at the latest,” Liz explains. “We send lambs to market earlier than the entire country, so we are first to the supply chain. We’ve been shipping lambs out of state since the beginning of August. Because American lamb is heavily supplied in white tablecloth restaurants in the east—New York, Boston, Philadelphia—when COVID hit, and restaurants closed their doors overnight, demand completely dropped.”

PHOTO TRAILING OF THE SHEEP
BY FLAVIU GRUMAZESCU
FESTIVAL 2022 svpn-mag.com 43

The overnight gridlock not only hurt the industry packers, feed lots, and producers, it also rippled into small, local community economies with little disposable income. “We had all this prime product with an expiration date and limited holding space,” says Liz. “The longer it’s held, the lower the quality. Once it’s over 12 months, it’s no longer lamb, but mutton.”

Liz says the lamb and wool markets are incredibly volatile right now. “In 2021, we had record-high lamb prices, which helped bring us back over the hill. We’re having some supply chain issues this year, so we still feel these ripples, but we are slowly and surely climbing out.”

John Peavey, of the Flat Top Sheep Co., in the foothills of the Pioneer Mountains, believes that the essence of the sheep industry is fundamentally built on sustainability in the same manner as it has been for thousands of years—animals that forage on natural grasses, as in regenerative, sustainable grazing, and then are harvested by people to produce food and raw materials. Their migration also helps cut down rangeland fuel for fires.

Says John, “The difficulty lies in how migration translates into today’s world—our Valley— valuable land perimeters being built up and threatening rights of way and therefore sustainability. It makes it difficult to move the bands of sheep where they need to go to continue grazing.” John says it’s vital to defend sheep movement by our old railroad right of way,

now a bike path. “People universally support how sheep operations work as the animals travel back and forth with the change of seasons. That’s the big picture. The little picture is the construction of enormous structures near the avenues where the sheep are moved. The message for future generations is be vigilant— protect your ability to move around your operating areas,” he adds.

In the Wood River Valley (and the Boise foothills), public land access is as important an issue as it’s ever been in maintaining a balance between usage and grazing rights. This encompasses predator management as well. Liz says that educating the public is the most effective way to address the issues. “With more people moving into the state and using public lands, the more opportunities we have to educate and share information about this historic industry and to proudly promote these two incredible Idaho products, lamb and wool,” she says. “It’s part of the legacy and framework that built the state. Most people don’t think of sheep in Idaho because you don’t necessarily see them when you drive down the highway, as we graze in even more inaccessible areas. Not having that visible piece can make education and promotion difficult. Our association greatly appreciates the Trailing of the Sheep Festival for all it does in terms of this exposure.” 

Over five days, the many moving parts of this event converge and culminate in a grand finale of 1,500 sheep trailing down Ketchum’s Main Street for the Big Sheep Parade. The Trailing of the Sheep Festival extends from Ketchum to Hailey with the National Point Qualifying Championship Sheepdog Trials, a Sheep Folklife Festival, a Wool Fest, culinary events, and more.

HISTORY

John Hailey brought the first sheep into the Wood River Valley in the late 1860s. At that time, Idaho recorded a breeding sheep population of 14,000. As the mines began to play a bigger role in the Wood River Valley, the sheep industry became increasingly significant in the local economy. By 1890, there were a reported 614,000 sheep in Idaho. During this time, thousands of lambs were shipped by railroad from Hill City, Fairfield, Picabo, Bellevue, Hailey, and Ketchum to markets around the West. As a significant sheep center, Ketchum was second only to Sydney, Australia. When Sun Valley opened its winter ski resort in 1936, sheepman Jack Lane welcomed sheepmen at his general store, The Lane Mercantile, in Ketchum. It served as the sheep center where ranchers congregated to swap stories about prices and weather. The building is still located at the corner of Main Street and Sun Valley Road and houses Enoteca, a fine dining restaurant.

CULINARY EVENTS

Experience the best in American Lamb from some of the top restaurants in the Wood River Valley at The For Love of Lamb tastings and even more at Lamb Fest at the Folklife Fair, along with the extremely popular, and often sold-out, lamb cooking classes and Farm to Table Lamb Dinners. Enjoy American lamb specials at many restaurants around town.

WOOL FEST

Wool Fest covers everything from an online class to an array of wool arts, from weaving and felting to skinnfelling, including fiber prepping, painting, applique, and weaving a Mother Tree. Doris Florig, Citizen of the World, brings this unique project to the Festival, which has been traveling around the globe. You can spend a few minutes participating in building a 16-foot Ponderosa Pine wall sculpture made from weaving the bark, wrapping the branches, and needle felting the pinecones. There are various stations to suit all levels of ability. Doris, a tapestry weaver and fiber

sculptor, will share her experience and knowledge with native peoples from her travels as she leads this unique opportunity to participate in a collaborative wool project.

BIG SHEEP PARADE

As part of their annual migration to winter pastures, 1,500 sheep parade down Ketchum’s Main Street with sheep ranching family members and herders headed south. This year’s hosts are the men and women of Faulkner Land & Livestock. John Faulkner, a thirdgeneration sheep rancher, first with his father and two brothers and now with his sons, Mike and Jack, has run the sheep operation since 1956. They are assisted by Sheep Manager John Etchart. It has been headquartered in Gooding, Idaho, since 1933. Most of Faulkner’s sheep run in the Smoky Mountains at the head of the South Fork of the Boise River, in the hills behind Featherville and Fairfield, and through the Wood River Valley north into the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. The parade

includes historic sheep wagons and participants from the Folklife Fair, which include The Boise Highlanders, Oinkari Basque Dancers, and Peruvian dancers and musicians each identified by sign-bearing dancers from the Footlight Dance Centre. A riderless horse will again be a part of the Trailing of the Sheep Festival Parade in memoriam of those lost in the sheep family this year.

*No dogs are allowed at the parade for the sake of the sheep and the safety of spectators. Please leave your dogs at home.

A FAMILY AFFAIR

Women preserving and redefining sheep ranching in the West

Sheep ranching is steeped in family heritage. The migration of flocks from summer to winter range, the ebb and flow of the seasons, the frantic press of lambing and shearing—these rituals so emblematic of ranching have been passed down through families from generation to generation. Yet, change, when it comes, sometimes heralds an end to a certain way of life, leaving future generations to find their way as anything but ranchers.

At least, so it has been for the intrepid women taking the stage at The Argyros Performing Arts Center on October 7 for this year’s Sheep Tales Gathering: “Voices of the Land—Unique Stories of Women in Ranching.” The Gathering’s moderator, third-generation rancher Mike Guerry, articulates what makes these women special. “They are breaking new ground and glass ceilings. They are taking on ranching with grit and perseverance.” Notably, all hail from proud shepherding families, but only one began her career as a rancher.

“My dad grew up on a sheep ranch in Idaho but left to attend school and become an engineer in upstate New York,” muses Marcia Barinaga of Barinaga Ranch. “I had never really touched a sheep when I made the decision to purchase the ranch.” After a successful career in molecular biology and science writing, Marcia fell in love with a ranch in Marin County, California, where she planned to retire. However, those plans shifted when the opportunity came to turn the ranch into a sheep dairy.

“The idea of a sheep dairy touched a chord in me,” she remembers. “In the Basque country, where my family is from, if you are a shepherd, you have sheep, you milk them, and you make cheese.” Marcia spent months learning the trade, even traveling to the Basque region to observe traditional cheese-making techniques. She used this research to create her recipes, a bet that paid off when her cheese won “Best in Class” at the American Cheese Society. She began transitioning from a dairy to a fiber ranch in 2016. “Cheese has a sell-by date,” she notes wryly. “I couldn’t take a vacation. It’s hard work, but ranching is so rewarding. I love spending time with my animals and being part of this hard-working community.”

Julie Hansmire of Campbell Hansmire Sheep in Vail, Colorado, can attest to the commitment required to run

a ranch. “It’s hard work, with late nights and early mornings,” she agrees. “I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t feel like it was an integral part of my community and my family.” Like Barinaga, her family’s history led her to ranching. “My husband, Randy, grew up in a sheep ranching family,” she explains. “His parents sold their ranch when he was a boy, but he kept working with sheep.” So, the couple started their own ranch in the 1980s, relying on Randy’s experience and Julie’s degree in Range Science. They were soon running sheep along the Utah/Colorado border.

Sadly, Randy passed away from lung cancer in 2010. “I didn’t realize how it would feel to have the weight of our operation on my shoulders. I wasn’t sure I could do it,” Julie confesses. “I have pushed to be better at everything I do.” Not only has she taken leadership roles in the industry, but her focus on sustainable practices has dramatically improved the rangeland. “I’m proud to take care of our resources for the future.”

The benefit of targeted grazing on the land is a guiding principle for Andrée and Bianca Soares of Talbott Sheep Co., which has fundamentally changed their business. “When I was a kid, my grandfather said that sheep ranching would be dead in California,” says Bianca. “There was not a lot of optimism.” Not only is their family’s 100-year-old ranch thriving, but the mother/ daughter duo added a new venture, Star Creek Land Stewards, which uses sheep and goats to manage vegetation for wildfire prevention. “We want to show people that there’s another way of doing things,” continues Bianca. “With targeted grazing, you have a new stream of income, so you’re not only relying on lamb and wool sales. It’s a way to protect the land and keep the industry alive.”

And keeping the industry alive is everything to the Soares family. “My grandfather had two daughters, my mom and my aunt, so I think he assumed the business would end with him,” states Bianca. In fact, Andrée was a registered nurse for 29 years before taking over the ranch. Bianca is the first woman in her family to have made it her primary career. She grows pensive, noting, “My grandfather passed away this year. It meant a lot to him to watch what we’ve done.”

For these women, ranching remains a family affair, no matter how they came to it. Marcia Barinaga says it well: “I feel like I’ve come full circle.”

National Point Qualifying Championship Sheepdog Trials are a must-see event

In October 1873, a group of Welsh shepherds met to showcase the skills of their Border Collies—a breed named for their work in the border countries between Scotland and England.

Seven years later, Philadelphia hosted its own trials, and in 1928 more than 1,500 people gathered in Vermont to witness the first official sheepdog trial in the United States.

The National Point Qualifying Championship Sheepdog Trials, held each year as part of the Trailing of the Sheep Festival and sanctioned by the United States Border Collie Handlers’ Association, is part of this long tradition of testing and demonstrating a dog and its handler’s skills.

“It’s a part of the sheepherding heritage,” says Xole Uranga, Festival Coordinator and the daughter of a Basque sheepherder who immigrated to Idaho in 1968.

Over the course of three-and-a-half days, these working dogs display their skills through an Open Trial—an event that was enjoyed by more than 3,500 spectators in 2021. Dogs and their handlers come from all over: Texas, Western Canada, and across Idaho and its neighboring states.

The trial displays the everyday work of a sheepdog and is scored in three parts: as the dog goes to the sheep, introduces itself, then brings them back toward its handler (Outrun, Lift, and Fetch); takes them from one designated point to another (Drive); then separates an individual sheep or small group from the

TRAILING OF THE SHEEP FESTIVAL 2022 svpn-mag.com 55

“The work these dogs do is much harder than it appears.”

flock before driving the sheep into an enclosed area (Shed, Single, and Pen).

The trial finals feature a “Double Lift,” an endurance event where the dog must “lift” two separate bands of sheep before moving them through the course together.

“The hardest part of trialing is communication,” says Kelly Ware, Festival USBCHA Trials’ Coordinator and a handler herself.

Kelly says that the skills are innate to Border Collies, but that every dog has a style that the handler has to learn. “Handling and working with Border Collies is really a journey. You improve, and the dogs improve as time goes on.”

The trials at Trailing of the Sheep Festival are unique among the hundred or so held across the country because of the particular sheep these dogs encounter in the Wood River Valley.

“The sheep we use aren’t used to the competition,” says Xole. On loan from the Peavey family’s Flat Top Sheep Co., these sheep summer in the Pioneer Mountains and are among some of the last “big bands” of sheep fed on the range and rarely handled.

“They’ve never seen the course before. It’s a spectacle,” says Xole.

Kelly also describes these sheep as smarter than your average trial herds. “They don’t have as much respect for dogs,” she says.

Accustomed to danger and unacquainted with spectators, tents, and noise, these sheep present a new challenge for the dogs to keep them calm and moving. “It’s the reason people drive from Texas to compete,” says Kelly.

This year’s trials will feature 49 handlers and 107 dogs, each running the course twice. The top three dogs from each day are awarded prizes and proceed to the finals on Sunday, where three wild card draws of the highest combined scores join them. The overall winner is invited to the Soldier Hollow Classic, the premier championship held each September in Heber Valley, Utah.

“The Trailing of the Sheep Festival is also really fun because people are watching,” says Xole, something that differentiates these trials from others the handlers might compete in throughout the year.

56 svpn-mag.com

For attendees, there are opportunities to ask questions of the handlers, enjoy lunch from the Gooding Basque Association, and shop the wares from many craftspeople including Rattlesnake Creek Alpacas to Ewe and Eye Fibers.

For many years, the sheepdog trials have been held out Quigley Canyon in Hailey, but this year the event will be in a large field on Buttercup Road.

“The recent development of Quigley Canyon spurred the need to look for a new site, which was a difficult task,” says Xole. “It’s been a huge challenge to find enough land to host it, and we have to consider where the sheep will be safe.”

In addition to the higher cost of the Buttercup site, this land might not be available next year. Looking ahead, the team will need a location of at least 30 acres. “It’s getting harder and harder to find a site,” Xole says, but the Festival is open to ideas from those interested in seeing the sheepdog trials continue in the Valley.

“The Trailing of the Sheep Festival is a great supporter of the sheepherding community,” says Kelly. “The work these dogs do is so much harder than it appears. You should have great respect for anyone who makes it around. I think spectators get that.”

BUILDING A NEW ERA IN EDUCATION

The Sage School moves to its Quigley Farm campus

As The Sage School enters a new era, its credo carries more weight than ever: “how we educate our children determines the fate of the world. The Sage School strives to honor adolescence and create thriving communities.”

In the Wood River Valley, progressive ideas have always been welcomed and defined by the community. The Sage School is helping create a new chapter in the area’s local history with its move to a permanent campus in Quigley Farm in Hailey. The shift also represents a new frontier in the Valley’s progress where balancing economic, social, and environmental ideals are at the forefront.

THE VISION

At the edge of a 1,200-acre conservation easement, The Sage School students will have abundant access to wilderness, restoration projects, and open space. The physical campus will be a shared asset and will honor the area’s agricultural history. As one of many local partners to call Quigley Farm home, The Sage School will be part of an intentional community that will promote collaboration and connectivity.

The resource funding comes from the Quigley Campaign, which provides the needed funds to complete this purposeful new campus in Quigley Farm and creates future funding for a new $5.5 million endowment for The Sage School’s People & Programs Initiative. The fund ensures the sustainability of The Sage School across three key tenets—student access, honoring and enriching teachers, and guaranteeing that the school’s unique curriculum will thrive in the years ahead. The school continues to raise funds for the completion of the campus and the Quigley Campaign as a whole.

The visionary concepts of The Sage School’s Head of School and Co-founder Harry Weekes are based upon authentic learning experiences for students in grades six through

twelve. The importance of architecture in a learning environment, referred to today as “living buildings,” is something that Harry has been watching since the early ‘90s when he began teaching at Sun Valley Community School. For 25 years, Harry has been contemplating how a building can be a partner in education, from the amount of light it lets in to the architecture of the structure itself, the carpets, and even the paint, all of which can improve an environment. How do you create a space that is designed to make you alert, alive, and thriving?

“With more interactive space, a building becomes a component of the learning environment,” says Harry. “We are a school in a community, so we want to make the school part of the community.”

THE CAMPUS

The Sage School’s new campus is centered around the Barn Classroom, which will contain a commercial kitchen, open- floor meeting spaces, dedicated classrooms, and the school’s administrative offices. Modular classrooms and ample outdoor meeting and play spaces will complete a campus that makes the environment part of the overall learning experience.

Mike Pfau, The Sage School’s campus construction site project manager for Lee Gilman Builders and a member of the school’s board, also has a personal connection to The Sage School’s new campus. “As a person who has grown up in the Wood River Valley, this project means a great deal to me. My daughter attends The Sage School. It is an honor to create a campus for the future of learning and progress,” says Mike. “Quigley Canyon is amazing. I have been able to spend time in the canyon during this build, and it offers an incredible opportunity for education, especially keeping in mind the approach of The Sage School and experiencing the outdoors.”

Each school “band” or grade has its own building with slightly different elements, which are based on each grade’s developmental stage. The senior class has space in the timber-framed Barn and on the upstairs level as they look to the future to take flight. Other elements are a quad setting and access to Wood River Valley High School as well as the nearby Quigley Canyon trail system, which is part of the Quigley Farm.

A sense of place is at the center of the emerging campus. It will be an integral part of Quigley Farm when it welcomes students. Eventually, the mixed-use neighborhood will include residential homes, nonprofit and commercial spaces, recreational facilities and opportunities, and space for conservation, agriculture, and education.

“Place is an intersection of many factors—ecology, biology, culture, time, space, and landscape,” says Harry. “Locating The Sage School in Quigley will put our students in a beautiful natural environment and at the heart of a community. They will be in a space and place to reach out into our community and it will provide a place and an invitation for the community to reach into the school.”

THE MISSION

“When Harry and I left Sun Valley Community School, we were fearful. We had young kids, and we thought this was risky,” says The Sage School Assistant Head of School and Co-founder Chris McAvoy. “Yet the vision meant something to us. A few families took that first step, then a few more decided to come, and now more than 90 kids attend the school, and we have a new campus. We have brought families together that are very interested in human development. There isn’t any other school that takes a step to honor adolescence.”

From sixth through twelfth grade, The Sage School intentionally gives students experiences that immerse them in a sense of place. Students interact with the local community, study regional systems, and criss-cross the physical landscape to develop a true sense and awareness of this part of Idaho and the Intermountain West.

Harry Weekes has a very generative job and constantly thinks about people and survival. “There’s an intimacy, a connection to classmates, teachers, and the school,” he says. “In a place of expansion and developing one’s life, it evolves. Adaption is an important piece of the overall picture. You want to have the ability to adapt and change.”

At The Sage School’s heart are the relationships between students and teachers. The faculty and staff are the primary vehicles for engaging its students. Supporting and keeping the highest quality staff possible is paramount for the school and its mission to honor adolescence.

“We look at three pathways—developing a sense of self, community responsibility, and a sense of place,” says Harry. “When people understand who they are and what they want to do in the world, they feel connected to their community and grounded in their place—that’s the sweet spot. In a resort community, the numbers are low for those who stay in their communities. Place informs, and so does culture, which is reflected in the community. How are you going to be involved with those things? The Sage School tries to bring context inside of the school framework where adolescents are individuals. There are incremental

increases in all types of situations and pressures—mental stability, social anxiety, safety, and the state of things for kids in these years.”

“It’s hard to work with young people and see what they are going through in our society today, but it’s ok because teenagers are an investment in the future,” he adds.

Ever since Harry and Chris founded The Sage School 14 years ago, their vision was to establish a permanent, thriving campus where the students are involved in the community and honoring adolescence is the focus. Now it is a reality.

“Adults talk about teenagers as if we didn’t go through this phase,” shares Harry. “We have this collective amnesia. It is existing between two worlds—childhood and adulthood. It’s a magical thing to work with kids. They are wonderful, energetic people. They are awesome, and that’s the best part of the job.”

RELIGHT THE LIBERTY THEATRE

Saving a theater for a promising future

The Liberty Theatre on Main Street in Hailey.

112 svpn-mag.com

For many, the Liberty Theatre in downtown Hailey is a visual icon and point of arrival in the Wood River Valley. When lit, its inviting neon color stream and art deco appeal exude excitement and invoke an energetic Hailey Main Street. The previous home to the former Company of Fools theater production group, the Liberty Theatre stage has seen many performers and performances, including Bruce Willis, a once-owner who restored the orginal theater and also performed there. Others who have graced the stage include Robin Williams, The Second City traveling comedy troupe, countless outstanding performers, along with other live events and film screenings. The vibrancy and community service of the theater were embraced by many.

The Liberty has been dark since the onset of the pandemic due to the departure of Company of Fool’s Artistic and Producing Director Scott Palmer and the significant impact of COVID. The future of the Liberty Theatre could be the charge of a new valley nonprofit and arts organization, The Liberty Theatre Company (TLTC). Launched in 2021 with seed money from SVMoA, the TLTC has been operating sans a home and performing with a rousing schedule of plays along with a dedicated staff, a cadre of talented actors, a working board of directors, and an artists’ council. Because its the theater itself is not operable, TLTC has launched a capital campaign to raise funds needed for structural renovations and ongoing maintenance.

Still, under the ownership of the SVMoA, the theater needs repair to open safely and operate properly. Therefore, in an amicable agreement, SVMoA has offered to gift the entirety of the theater to the Liberty Theatre Company to use and provide a home for the production company. To relight the Liberty Theatre, a fast-paced but all-encompassing fundraising campaign is underway, and the Liberty Theatre Company is making headway, but a deadline of December 31, 2022 looms.

“This is an opportunity to preserve part of our Valley’s history,” says The Liberty Theatre Company Board President Claudia McCain. “It’s a lovely piece of our heritage that we should

preserve. We can see where we have been and carry it forward for future generations, and The Liberty exemplifies this.”

The prospect of a driving cultural and economic pulse to the Hailey community, as The Liberty once existed, is important to the Valley. But unfortunately, those who have recently moved to the Wood River Valley may not realize this missing element.

“The economic impact on Hailey alone is palpable,” says The Liberty Theatre Company Executive Director JD McDonnell. “The restaurants, bars, shops, and everything around that intersection up and down Main Street draw crowds from the theater. This strategic campaign for The Liberty is more than just the theater company. It’s about the building. The community becomes fractured when you lose a piece of an artistic center. It’s a fragmented environment. Live performance connects to audiences, and the theater is where people come together and share in an experience beyond themselves.”

The power of the arts and live performance is more important than ever for the health and prosperity of the community. The Liberty Theatre Company can offer a performance space

for many to use with an operating theater. However, the building requires significant internal renovation to satisfy post-pandemic industry standards with new air filtration systems and structural renovation due to the typical aging of such facilities. The Liberty Theatre Company needs to raise $1,700,000 by December 31, and $1,200,000 will go directly to renovation costs with the remaining $500,000 going to an endowment to ensure ongoing care and upkeep of the building.

The history of The Liberty goes back to the 1900s, and the present-day structure was built in 1938. When Bruce Willis and Demi Moore bought the theater in 1994, they restored it and, in 2017, donated it to the Sun Valley Museum of Art.

“We are being gifted a building and 25 years of assets,” says McDonnell. “But we are earning it. It’s not made in the box-ready formatted structure. We are going to make sure it’s viable for the long run. We have been working hard, we want this building to be functional, as well as the theater production company inside it, and we want to put on outstanding productions and add value to the community.”

FEATURE svpn-mag.com 115

Claudia adds, “This is the backstage work to get all this together to get the theater going, and it takes a village to make this happen. Completing the work will be another year and a half before it is usable. It’s a three-year endeavor, but the Company will continue to put on its productions as it is now.”

Through hosting private events and interpersonal connections, and drawing interests, the Relight The Liberty campaign is working. The many people who have contributed to date include the Hailey Rotary Club, which made its largest donation because of its commitment to local and burgeoning businesses. They are actively seeking more donation pledges from their membership. Others include 100 Men Who Care, many Valley foundations, and individuals who would like to return to the Liberty for shows and performances.

“It’s dynamic and special,” says Claudia. “It’s a performance space that provides an environment to realize potential and offers rehearsal space and theatre education including improv and movement classes, and we hope to add adult classes eventually. We also hope to co-produce projects. It’s a facility for an artist community, not an exclusive club. Its agenda will be inclusive. As an artist, separate from my advocacy, I cut my teeth on theater in this community. I don’t want us to lose another theater because we couldn’t keep the doors open.”

The Liberty Theatre Company is working with the Spur Community Foundation to help facilitate donations. To donate, learn more, or attend a production, visit libertytheatrecompany.org. The Liberty Theatre Company in the Hailey Fourth of July Main Street parade.

TAKING CARE OF BALDY

Bald Mountain Stewardship Project is a safeguard with benefits

As most Wood River Valley residents and those who frequent the area know, wildfire and beetle kill is an ever-present situation that requires consistent attention to mitigate wildfire risk and improve forest health. In an ongoing landscape-scale and multi-year plan as well as a unique partnership, the Bald Mountain Stewardship Project (BMSP) is preserving Baldy in collaboration with Sun Valley Company (SVC), the National Forest Foundation (NFF), the U.S. Forest Service (USFS), and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to ensure that our renowned recreation destination continues to be a world-class experience while improving forest health and reducing fuels and associated fire risk. This ambitious project is projected to cover over 6,000 acres of land split between the USFS and the BLM, with over 3,000 acres on Bald Mountain. The project aims to protect the area’s forests, economy, and viewshed.

Forty-five acres in the Warm Springs Scorpion area will be treated in 2022.
FEATURE svpn-mag.com 119

This symbiotic relationship between SVC, NFF, BLM, and USFS allows this grand cross-boundary project to benefit the natural environment and the Wood River Valley. SVC is committed to preserving the land on and around Baldy to protect its recreational use and recognizes the importance of managing this land and its partners. The NFF is responsible for helping drive funding and management of ongoing projects in partnership with the USFS and BLM, agencies that own the land and allow for project permitting.

“We have had proof of concept of this collaboration and meeting objectives together,” says National Forest Foundation Northern Rockies Director Dani Southard. “All the partners are bringing contributions to the table, which makes this possible, especially the operations of Miller Timber Services, which is a industry leader in the preservation, protection, and sustainability of our forests.”

The Wood River Valley Forest Health and Wildfire Resilience Project, as part of BMSP, was selected for the highly competitive national Joint Chiefs’ Landscape Restoration Partnership Program funding, and $643,975 was made available in 2022 for forest health priorities on Forest Service and private lands in the Wood River Valley. Additional funding over the next two years for a three-year project investment of $2.5 million is already in progress.

The Wood River Valley Forest Health and Wildfire Resilience Project includes efforts involving targeted thinning of dead or dying trees, reforestation, non-native invasive plant reduction, and improvement of wildlife habitat. Joint Chiefs’ Landscape Restoration Partnership Program funding also provides cost-share opportunities for landowners wishing to carry out similar work on private lands along the main Wood River Valley corridor.

A diverse public-private group and partnership convened and was facilitated by the NFF in 2015 following the 2013 Beaver Creek Fire, which threatened communities in the Wood River Valley. “The community has worked hard to envision this project and has invested significantly to bring it to fruition,” says Southard. “The Joint Chiefs’ Landscape Restoration Partnership is a nationally competitive program, and we are excited to see this locally built project elevated to a national level.”

Significant community contributions to the Bald Mountain Stewardship fund have made a substantial impact in the continuing effort to improve Baldy’s and the surrounding area’s forest health, which includes the watershed and wildlife habitat, especially in removing noxious weeds, stapling MHC packets to deter insect infestations, and replanting trees.

“Community members and charitable foundations can add to the Bald Mountain Stewardship Project through the National Forest Foundation, which serves as a means for them to contribute on the ground,” says Southard. “It is a game-changer for this implementation season because those contributions are needed to leverage federal funding, which is about three times more than in the past. It also allowed us to scale up a unique partnership, the Wood for Life program (WFL). WFL provides local tribes with

a source of firewood from forest restoration projects. In 2022, approximately 30 log truckloads of wood—at least 250 cords of firewood each—were delivered to the Shoshone Bannock Tribe of Fort Hall and Shoshone-Paiute Tribe of Duck Valley. The wood is split and then delivered to the homes of elders and other community members in need. ”

With healthy forest work, Sun Valley Company has continued its work on Baldy to include Warm Springs, with new lifts and terrain improvements, which is a benefit for taking care of the slopes and the BMSP’s next stage. The Warm Springs area enhancement project is the replacement and realignment of the Challenger Chairlift, the construction of a new chairlift at the Warm Springs base area, and the extension of the Flying Squirrel ski trail and snowmaking. This will improve skier circulation, increase accessible skiable terrain, and improve lift and snow quality.

“All this is possible because of the three main objectives we have—addressing forest health, reducing wildfire risk, and preserving the recreational amenity of Bald Mountain,” says

Southard. “It was all intentional this year, a high priority, and we needed to get it done. A great deal of work is happening over the next two years on the Warm Springs side. Scorpion is a decently healthy stand with a high risk for bark beetles mortality. Our efforts this year there are focused on preserving the healthy trees we have and hitting it hard with the pheromone patches to prevent further die- off.”

Additional capacity for the two new Warm Springs lifts will ensure the minimal lift lines that Baldy skiers and snowboarders have come to expect. The new Challenger lift will be a high-speed Doppelmayr six-pack carrying skiers to the top in eight minutes, 35% faster than the current Challenger lift, which includes the stop at a mid-station for those wanting access to what is currently

serviced by Greyhawk. The second lift out of the Warm Springs base will be a high-speed quad, which will link to the top of the former Flying Squirrel lift. The new lift layout will improve skier circulation, spread the flow of skier traffic over a wider area and provide our guests with multiple options for accessing the rest of the mountain from Warm Springs, thereby improving the skier distribution between the two lifts.

Flying Squirrel trail will be extended down to Lower Warm Springs trail, which will provide additional repeatski terrain serviced by the new Lift A. Snowmaking will be extended onto Lower Flying Squirrel to offer the high-quality snow surface that Sun Valley is known for. As part of this year’s forest health work through the Bald Mountain Stewardship Project in partnership with the

National Forest Foundation and the U.S. Forest Service, dead tree removal and reducing fuels in the “Scorpion area” will also open additional gladed ski terrain to skier’s right of the new Lower Flying Squirrel trail.

“We are seeing significant impact with bark beetles on the Cold Spring side, and so we’re in the process of discussing priorities for work in 2023,” says Southard. “We can’t work everywhere on the mountain at once and so it’s important that we’re working to address the areas that will give us the most certainty of benefit to the forest and benefit to the community. It’s a recognizable challenge, issue, and balancing act.”

STANLEY’S SWEET SPOT

Shoulder Season in the Sawtooths

It’s the time of respite and peace in the mountains, a quiet dance between the fall and winter, as one trades its coat of color for the barren beauty of the hibernal. In the valley of the Sawtooths, there’s a bite in the tranquil air and the sound of the piercing elk bugle. Its seasonal environs are still amenable to biking, hiking, and exploring one of the most rugged and scenic regions in the West. It’s a time for brisk days and crisper nights with stars for miles.

While in their thirties, Russell and Mandy Clark purchased Mountain Village Resort (MVR) property that had been on the market for nearly 20 years and was showing its depreciation.

Eight years later, they are as passionate as ever about their investment, and so is their dedicated team of managers throughout the Resort. All pride themselves on excellent customer service, cleanliness, and high-quality products.

“I can’t say enough about our team,” Mandy says. “They’ve dedicated their skills and their life, really, to live in Stanley.

It’s a sacrifice to want to live here and be a part of this amazing community.”

The Resort continues to chalk up improvements, from acquiring an outpost lodge and cabins, adding employee housing, to ongoing room remodels. The variety of accommodations offer cozy, comfortable, and classic mountain charm. A five-minute walk from the lodge brings you to the small log building where the resort’s hot springs pool is beckoning you for a sweet soak as you gaze through the open barn-style doors framing the mighty Sawtooth range. It’s a feature the Clarks dream of someday developing more extensively.

The mercantile provides exceptional staples for a remote mountain town, impressively supplied with vacationing needs, groceries, personal items, and sporting goods. In addition, there’s a unique “Wine Shaft,” an incredible beer selection, and an Idaho State Liquor store. Finally, you’ll find a fun and varied selection of souvenirs, books, and gifts for a little early Christmas shopping. For your comfort food fix, the restaurant is open daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner with house specialties, cinnamon rolls, sirloin chili, cowboy-approved chicken fried steak, village nachos, and killer pasta.

Ski film season is here! The Resort’s Velvet Falls Dance Hall hosts a video premiere on October 22, at 7pm, for BRAP SKI 2 and Boondockers, the legendary snowmobile series. Come check out Karl Fostvedt’s second independent ski film on Brap Skiing—a term coined for using snow machines to access backcountry terrain—guaranteed to stoke you on sled and shred, featuring Karl’s crew of friends and legitimate senders.

And start dreaming up your costume for the resort’s annual Halloween Party on Saturday, October 29, at 9pm. The fun event—21 & up—features a costume contest with prizes, and free live music by Salt Lake City-based Cinders out on their fall tour, bringing rowdy, acoustic pop and their own style of lean indie, folk, and rock. Says lead vocalist and guitarist Montana Smith, “The audience better be ready to sing along and dance. We bring a lot of energy to our shows. We are basically doing a solid cardio exercise the entire show!”

Revered Idaho natives, Austin-based Micky and the Motorcars, jumpstart 2023 by headlining the MVR Pre-New Year’s Eve Party, December 30, opened by none other than dad, Muzzy Braun, at 8pm. Advance tickets are $25 and $30 at the door. Shapers of Austin’s roots-rock resurgence over the last two decades, the Motorcars—brothers Micky and Gary Braun—bring their alt-country sounds, signature harmonies, and incredible performance style back home to their old stomping grounds, with guitars and songs at the ready for good medicine from their latest album, Long Time Comin’ , a collection four years in the making. There’ll be door prizes, a complimentary champagne toast at midnight, and the following evening, on New Year’s Eve, Russell Clark will host a fantastic fireworks show, compliments of his other business, Stanley Construction. 

IT’S A NEW FRONTIER

Rudi Broschofsky’s Contemporary Holograms of the Old West

How do you make traditional Western art subjects edgy? Something representative yet abstract and conceptual? Ask Rudi Broschofsky, an emerging artist whose work conveys the majesty of the Wild West with neon spray paint. It speaks to both the cowboy and the urban hipster. Son of the founders of Ketchum’s Broschofsky Galleries, Rudi is the second generation pioneering his way in the arts. He has played an integral role in the operations and development of the gallery as a partner and full-time employee while additionally managing to break out as an artist in his own right. Rudi is a fresh voice in the Valley and far beyond that, is gripped by the imagery and symbolism of the Old West, which he translates into a modern visual language of street art. He re-imagines the nostalgic iconography he has been raised on in a punchy and innovative way.

They say that life imitates art. Rudi’s life undoubtedly shaped him into an artist who draws inspiration from lived experiences, his family’s saturation in the business, and his roots in the Wood River Valley (WRV). But, he explains, “My inspiration has come from my entire life.” Before he was even a year old, Rudi hit the road with both parents to caravan across the West, from Arizona to Montana and everywhere. The family owned a vineyard at the time and were traveling to galleries, trading wine for art. “A hippie way of getting into the business,” as Rudi recounts his parents’ approach. “There we are in a famous artist’s studio; my parents would be trying to forge a relationship with someone like Billy Schenk, and I’m knocking over easels like a bull in a china shop.” Rudi was five years old when his parents opened Broschofsky Galleries in 1987, finally settling in Ketchum, Idaho. Now

representing just over 30 artists, the gallery primarily deals with 19th to 21st-century fine art focusing on the American West. “Growing up, as soon as class was over, it was always straight from Hemingway to the gallery. That was my after-school program,” he says.

Rudi was always surrounded by art and naturally creative, gravitating to anything hands-on. His first long-term job was at Scott’s Frame Shop in Ketchum, where he worked for ten years throughout high school and college. Rudi’s boss nicknamed him “the surgeon” for his steady hand and meticulousness. These foundational skills would later develop into a unique artistic process relying on precision to trim stencils and build panels. Rudi’s next venture was starting his own art installation business, and he eventually came full circle to work at Broschofsky Galleries. After graduating college in 2005, Rudi became a full-time partner at the gallery and has been there for the past 17 years.

Not only does Rudi now represent some of the legendary artists he met as a child, but he also represents himself as

both artist and a dealer. His artwork hangs alongside that of masters like Edward Curtis and Andy Warhol, who have influenced Rudi throughout his life and career. Rudi had humbly considered his own work “art projects” or a “hobby” to experiment with in his free time. It wasn’t until gallerist and friend Pauli Ochi, of OCHI gallery in Ketchum and Los Angeles, spotted one of Rudi’s pieces tucked away at home that Rudi started taking his work more seriously. She invited him to participate in a 2012 group show titled Death to Day Job at OCHI in Ketchum. A month later, Rudi made his first debut and sold nearly every piece included in the exhibition. He was inspired by the immediate success, and Rudi was determined to discover his voice as an artist after securing an invite to the second annual group show. He was focused on fine-tuning his distinctive style and honing in on a subject.

Rudi would quickly become recognizable for his graphic halftones, lines, and Ben-Day dots portraying historic Western characters and scenes. Rudi explains that his wife, Cara Shumate, an established graphic designer here in the WRV, has helped him hone in on his process and continues to help bring his vision to life through her computer skills.

“Basically, she made the whole process less archaic. Instead of hoping something will come out cool, we can collaborate on the screen to produce the result beforehand,” he explains.

The stencils are pulled from the wood panels to reveal horizontal lines of neon paint and negative space. The paintings are finished with a coat of resin, which creates a glossy texture and noticeable depth. “I learn something from every step of every painting I do. I always make small tweaks, learn from my mistakes, try new techniques, and dial in the process,” says Rudi. “I am a perfectionist, but even if I execute something accurately, it will never be perfect. Nothing is! That’s the whole trade; trying to make it as beautiful and cool as possible and hope that someone likes it enough to hang it on their wall.”

Ultimately, these artworks materialize as contemporary holograms of scenes and characters resurrected from the past. This paradox of old and new reflects Rudi’s fresh perspective on the Broschofskys’ gallery and a genre of art grounded in so much history.

A native of Hailey, Idaho, Caleb Meyer has always enjoyed the rugged beauty that the Northwest has to offer. A graduate of Boise State University, he continued his education through an apprenticeship with renowned artist Robert Moore. Meyer compares his time in Moore’s studio to laying a solid foundation. “The painting process is like building a house, a painter must understand the principles of design to create a strong painting, much like a carpenter must understand the principles of architecture to build a strong house.” Meyer is now an established artist in his own right and features in public and private collections nationwide.

Born and raised in Montana, Mark Gibson initially trained in architecture. This formal training directly affected the architectural forms of the teepees that characterize his work. Gibson has been pushing himself to focus on purity of color and masterful composition, working to move the viewer’s eye around the entire piece. Most recently, he has been working on increasing the scale of his works, which has contributed to his achievement of creating a powerful mood and atmosphere in each painting.

Sun Valley artist Lori McNee is talented in several media, including oil, cold wax, and encaustic. Her subject matter is also extensive, and this exhibition will include her signature still-life imagery and poignant landscapes. Her work is opulent in color and texture, and her imagery is as ornamented by detail as it is rich in symbolism. Her surfaces are rich and translucent, which gives a more contemporary feel to a traditional subject, and her work has been compared to that of the Dutch Masters. McNee’s paintings are featured in numerous publications and can be found in many prestigious museum collections.

Marco Casentini

Casentini’s work continues his signature exploration of materials. These include acrylic paintings on plexiglass, paintings on canvas with applied plexiglass elements, and paintings on colored metal with aluminum supports. In his latest paintings, Casentini has introduced layers of dense grids or stripes over his signature overlapping planes of color. Painted on the metal surface of composite panels, the intricate linear work of Casentini’s compositions vibrates with color while still revealing the color forms underneath. In other paintings, Casentini uses a myriad of overlapping squares and rectangles. His paintings are elaborate compositions full of color vibrancy, visual rhythm, and movement.

Inspired by urban landscapes, Casentini’s work draws inspiration from the structural environments of urban centers. Experimenting with relational shapes and formations, the artist combines opaque, translucent, and reflective blocks of color to create distinct compositions that echo the energy and light of the cities where he lives.

Born in La Spezia, Italy, in 1961, Casentini studied painting at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Carrara, Italy. His work has been featured in over 150 solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, the Netherlands, and Australia. This is his seventh solo exhibition with Brian Gross Fine Art, having first exhibited in 1999 as an emerging talent. He currently lives and works in Milan, Italy, and Hermosa Beach, California.

Peter Clark

Using images of animals created from maps, labels, and discarded tickets or garments carefully crafted from gift wrapping, musical scores, and love letters, Peter Clark has the rare ability to turn ordinary printed matter into exquisite works of art with character, beauty, and wit. Whether at a car boot sale in Chiswick, an antique fair in Sussex, or further afield at flea markets in France, the U.S., Japan, and India, he travels far and wide to source materials for his next pieces.

Born in Yorkshire in 1944, Peter studied at Manchester College of Art and Design from 1962-1966. Having had a prolific career in design and illustration (notably holding senior positions at Granada Television (London and Manchester) and NBC (Los Angeles), in addition to freelance commissions for advertising, editorial, TV, and publishing throughout the world, in 1999 Peter began creating his first commissioned collages. From then on, the demand for his work has snowballed, leading to him becoming a fulltime artist with works in private and public collections worldwide.

Steve Wrubel

California-raised and Texas-based photographer Steve Wrubel turned his lens towards the power, leather, dirt, and sweat of the American Rodeo. Moved by stories from his family’s past in the Mojave Desert, “Rodeo” takes us to a place of light, motion, space, energy, and detail that begs us to question what it is to be alive. Using advanced graphic techniques and technology, Wrubel freezes the action so the viewer can examine crisp details of the sport that, in motion, are invisible to the naked eye. He then isolates his subjects from their typically distracting backgrounds. He invites the viewer to focus clearly on the finer and often unseen details of his issues, offering a deeper story of what is going on in the split second that his images were created.

“Finding a way to get in the dirt without getting in the way and not getting run over by a 1,500-pound wild horse is all part of the chase, the excitement, and what it takes to become a part of the image. To feel and become a part of the energy and chaos and turn it into a split-second representation of that amazing dance between man and animal.”

Greg Miller

Drawing on the cultural and geographic influences of his California roots, Greg Miller explores images of the American urban and rural landscape of the midtwentieth century. His mixed media paintings are nostalgic, rousing a shared cultural memory while commenting on contemporary perception.

Labeled a “neo-pop” and “post-pop” artist by such critics as Peter Frank, Miller does indeed draw from the pop-cultural imagery that saturated American consciousness during the 1950s and 1960s. It was a time when advertising and text became indelibly encrypted into our experience of everyday life. Life as “advertised” and life as “lived” were intertwined on the pages of LIFE and LOOK magazines, on television shows, commercials, billboards, hotel signs, romance novels, and even on matchbook covers as never before. Miller’s paintings excavate this imagery and often appear as unreconstructed fragments of these signs, drips, patterns, and phrases. These form the layers of Miller’s pop cultural imagery, literally and figuratively.

Greg Miller’s work is featured in numerous museum and private collections, including the Frederick R. Weisman Foundation and Charles Saatchi Foundation. The Get Go, a volume of his writings, photography, and paintings, was published in 2010, and the first comprehensive monograph on the artist, Signs of the Nearly Actual, was published in 2009.

“My paintings start with popular culture and the idea of Americana. From there, I build with paint and collage my own story of love, nature, and life. I want the viewer to look for the hidden messages and information I apply with a formalist application, much like a realist painter.”

Modern West Rudi Broschofsky

This exhibit features an assortment of works by Broschofsky Galleries’s director and artist Rudi Broschofsky. Situated somewhere in between representation and abstraction sit the works of Broschofsky. Taking a “Street Art” approach to Western Art makes his process unique to both genres. His paintings are constructed entirely out of spray paint, accomplished through a calculated process of creating meticulous stencils with an X-Acto knife. A stencil may take over 120 hours to create and sometimes only be used once. From nearby, the subject matter is non-representational, but with space, the composition becomes unmistakable.

OCHI Gleaners Through November

OCHI is pleased to present Gleaners, a solo exhibition of new works by Hely Omar Gonzalez. Gleaners is a suite of paintings that depict the quotidian activities of a clandestine community living and working on a marijuana processing farm in Northern California. Gonzalez’s series is inspired by and named for Jean-François Millet’s The Gleaners (1857), a painting that features three women collecting leftover wheat stalks on a farm in rural France. When first exhibited, the painting drew intense criticism from an upper-class audience still recovering from the fallout of the French Revolution. Millet’s The Gleaners is a timeless representation of the human labor behind capitalism. However, gleaning can be traced to Biblical passages that reference ungathered crops and unharvested edges of fields to benefit those less fortunate. The politics and poetics of gleaning can be evidenced in contemporary environmental activism and prompt fertile discourse on topics including climate change and trickledown economics.

In 2016, Gonzalez garnered the trust of one such farm and opted to live and work alongside an international cohort of seasonal laborers, drawing and painting his colleagues and their environment during his “nonworking” hours. Together they grew, picked, trimmed, dried, processed, and packaged marijuana in the

shadows of Mt. Shasta. Gonzalez’s documentation of these processes is both revelatory and mysterious, offering insight into the DIY nature of the operation. For example, in the painting Making Hash in the Garage (2022), a figure monitors an open washing machine adjacent to a tower made of two-by-fours, sawed-off buckets, garbage bags, and rubber tubing.

Scattered throughout the workspace is a bottle of bleach, an ice machine, bamboo poles, a tray of green leaves, and a chop saw. Gonzalez sets the scene, though the process of hash production remains hazy. Like the great genre painters, Gonzalez renders the mundane with exquisite care. An empty Bud Light box sits atop a kitchen countertop scale, waiting to quantify a crop of bud. Fingers assess, bundle, and pick lush leaves. Camping chairs, plastic bins, and other utilitarian objects are ubiquitous.

Gonzalez’s paintings also identify ominous undertones. Collective success in such an operation is unusually precarious—frozen pipes, sudden storms, fires, pests, thieves, and all kinds of natural and unnatural occurrences can end a harvest and leave workers with no income. The harsh realities of the farm are perhaps best reflected in the painting Nights Watch (2022). A man holding a rifle is silhouetted against the grow light glow of makeshift plastic-sheeted greenhouses, surrounded by a vast black and purple nightscape. Nights Watch evokes the sublime in all its romantic and existential glory while reminding

the audience of what is at stake—the farm is not a utopic commune, and its inhabitants take turns guarding the product at all hours of the day and night.

Gonzalez begins each work by Shibori-dying linen in a vivid assortment of colors. Stretching the dried linen and taping off a central rectangle, Gonzalez primes a window and lays down a bright neon underpainting before beginning to render figures, objects, or environments. Slowly building layers of luminosity in paint, Gonzalez captures a variety of natural and artificial diegetic lighting conditions found on the farm, his luscious chiaroscuros giving shape to the narrative. The completed oil painting appears to hover picture-in-picture above tiedye abstractions, like a hallucination of the history of a joint floating in the middle of a psychedelic tapestry. In Japanese, Shibori means “to wring, squeeze, and press,” and the visual— sometimes photographic—impressions of this technique recall the physical labor of each fold, twist, and tie while drawing parallels to the labor-intensive tasks of weed cultivation.

Gleaners is a love letter to a California in which rich immigrant experiences and hippy counterculture can peacefully coexist. By expanding on the vernacular of work, Gonzalez considers the similarities between leisure and labor as he embraces painting’s ability to tell the multivalent stories of the underrepresented.

Color V

The exhibit features artists working in abstract and representational forms whose work employs color in various ways. Composed of paintings, works on paper, and sculptures with powerful hues. Gary Komarin, a master of Post-Painterly Abstraction, has been at the forefront of contemporary art with a bold style recognized worldwide. Pegan Brooke mixes minerals into her palette, a process that creates colorful and reflective canvases. Marcia Myers utilized natural pigments and encaustic to capture the essence of Italian Fresco. The exhibition will feature work by Linda Christensen, Cole Morgan, Rana Rochat, Allison Stewart, and others.

Another View II

This group exhibition challenges how we interpret our natural surroundings and the wildlife within our landscape. Another View demonstrates artists who shift our perspectives of the natural world in multiple mediums. Laura McPhee’s photographs focus on the intersection of man and nature, while Victoria Adams shows no human trace in her ethereal scenes. James Cook, Sheila Gardner, Michael Gregory, Theodore Waddell, Robert McCauley, Chris Maynard, Diane Andrews Hall, Berkeley Hoerr, Kiki Smith, and newly represented artist, Maggie Shafran, offer unique and introspective views of the great outdoors, inviting us to see our landscape through the another lens.

Against the Grain

Artists use textiles, including fabric, yarn, and thread, both natural and synthetic.

Focusing on materials and the time-consuming labor involved as part of its significance, this exhibition will feature Lisa Kokin, Robb Putnam, Pamela DeTuncq, Mary Snowden, and Jennifer Markowitz. These fiber artists work with unconventional materials to create astonishing works of art. Each artist’s process is unique but made similar by the painstaking time that goes into every stitch. Kokin hand-sews vintage book covers to create sprawling wall sculptures, while Putnam uses his technique of applying textiles to armatures. Jennifer Markowitz uses panels of silk as her canvas, using the “drawn thread” method. She embroiders images and text pulled from personal memories, traumas, confusions, artifacts, and maps.

Michael Gregory

Michael Gregory’s paintings depict the iconic American landscape as a terrain where space seems infinite, where light can shine in the sky uninterrupted by the debris of civilization. These paintings harken back to another time yet are strikingly contemporary. Stripped down to the essence of structure, a barn sets the stage for a sense of moody nostalgia and memory. Gregory’s skies are as important as the land and the structures in his paintings. Sometimes the atmosphere is ominous and stormy, while others are peaceful and filled with golden light. There is an interesting tension created by a style that is simultaneously hyperrealist yet exorbitant in scale and color. This exhibition will feature new paintings by the artist, who has work included in the collections of the Boise Art Museum, Idaho; Delaware Art Museum, Wilmington; Denver Art Museum, Colorado; Evansville Museum of Arts, History, and Science, Indiana; San Jose Museum of Art, California, and numerous private collections.

Sun Valley Museum of Art Dams: Reservoirs, Reclamation, Renewal

Through December 2022

A BIG IDEA project of Sun Valley Museum of Art

Coinciding with renewed dialogue about the possibility of breaching dams throughout the Columbia River Basin, this BIG IDEA project offers a conversation about the impact of dams on Idaho and the American West. Dams have shaped Idaho’s landscapes, ecosystems, and economies for more than a century. At this historic moment, the project considers the history of damming in the Pacific Northwest, the effects of dams on the region, and a reimagined future for rivers and the life dependent on them in the American West. The exhibit features work from four artists.

Eirik Johnson

Photographer Eirik Johnson has often explored the places where human activity and wilderness intersect, including the Elwha River, where the Glines Canyon Dam and Elwha Dam have both been removed. The exhibition includes a photograph of the Elwha Dam and a diptych Johnson made at the site of the Glines Canyon Dam before and after removal. For this exhibition, Johnson has made a commissioned series of photographs “along the banks of the roiling wild Elwha,” exploring the transformation the river and landscape have undergone in the eight years since dam removal.

Carolina Caycedo

Since 2013, Carolina Caycedo has pursued Be Dammed, an exploration in multiple media of the impact of dams on Indigenous and traditional peoples in the Americas. In July 2021, Caycedo traveled through Idaho, visiting dams, speaking with members of the Shoshone-Bannock and Nez Perce Tribes, researching their traditional fishing practices, and interviewing biologists and others, all in preparation for the creation of an installation featuring a new film, Reciprocal Sacrifice, and sculpture, Salute of the Fish.

James Prosek

Artist, writer, and naturalist James Prosek is interested in intersections and interdependence within ecosystems. He often investigates the effects of boundaries, both real (dams) and imaginary (map lines), on wildlife migration and relationships between species. Following a site visit last summer, Prosek has made a large-scale mural, watercolor paintings, and sculptures to help visitors better understand the effects of dams on Idaho’s salmon and other fauna and flora.

Rachel Teannalach

In collaboration with Advocates for the West, painter Rachel Teannalach recently pursued a painted study of the Salmon, Snake, and Columbia Rivers, from the Salmon’s headwaters to the Columbia’s mouth. For this exhibition, she has made four paintings of the dams along the lower Snake recently proposed for breaching, juxtaposing their monumentality with the waterways they intersect.

Harvey Art Projects The Top End Through October

The Top End of Australia encompasses the indigenous regions of the Tiwi Islands and East and West Arnhem Land, a large parcel of Northern Australia that is Aboriginal-owned and -managed land. This vast tract of nearly 100,000 square kilometers is the home of the Tiwi and the Yolgnu, the Indigenous custodians of the land and its stories. People began 40,000 years ago with their distinct rich cultural and artistic traditions, and their beautiful artworks carry forward important kinship relationships and sacred stories of creation. This area of Australia feels like another world. Freshwater and saltwater purposefully intertwine, and red-ocher rocks nestle amongst vast beaches rich with sea life and fringed by dense stringy-bark forest. It is an unimaginable paradise. Here, land and sea are connected in a single cycle of life for which the Yolngu and Tiwi hold the songs and designs. These spiritual forces govern the sacred designs behind the ongoing Creation and continuing identity of this unique region of Australia. As diverse as the geography, the art centers from this region produce work that shares similar materials and techniques, using only natural earth pigments or ocher to create bark painting, woven fiber work, and wood carving.

CENTER’S APPROACH TO

BACK-TO-SCHOOL IMMUNITY

Health is resilience

It’s an exciting time of year, going back to school, and the focus should be on healthy emotions, body, mental preparation, and resilience. Particularly after the last few years, the health of our children should prioritize a balanced nervous system and an immune system that is well prepared, healthy, resilient, and not in a fearful or fight/flight mentality.

The human body is designed to be healthy, resilient, and strong. We only have to give ourselves the tools for success, and we are designed, believe it or not, to remain healthy. In a new school year, children will be exposed to various viruses that can cause illnesses ranging from a simple cold to more severe conditions. All viruses have been around for thousands of years. People will have a better chance of staying healthy and recovering quickly if their immune systems are robust.

Modern healthcare should focus on preventing illness on a multidimensional level. There is so much we can do for our children to avoid illness. Prevention is the key to health. To begin with, we need healthy food. Organic, whole foods are the basics and cornerstones of health for our families. In addition to healthy, whole foods, we need healthy emotions and a balanced nervous system.

As a neurologically-based clinic, we see positive results with the combination of neurofeedback and QNRT for emotional wellness and physical immune response. Neurofeedback is a way to train the brain towards healthy, efficient patterns and emotions through audio and video training of the brain. Anxiety patterns, slow processing, emotional volatility, poor stress tolerance, and immunity can all be addressed through neurofeedback and brain training.

“People will have a better chance of staying healthy and recovering quickly if their immune systems are robust.”

If your child does become ill, the QNRT immune resets work quickly and efficiently. In addition to QNRT immune resets, a few supplements are recommended: Smart silver, ½ tsp, 3x/day. Nuclelimmune, 2 2x/day, Virus plus homeopathic remedy, 3 drops, 2x/day, and digestxym + 2 before bed.

As parents, we can support immunity with immuneboosting foods such as fruits and vegetables high in vitamin C, fiber, and minerals. These include broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, yams, and more. Nuts and seeds, including chia, almonds, walnuts, flax, cashews, and others. Antioxidants keep kids healthy. These are found in richly colored foods and superfoods. Avoid processed sugar and foods at all costs, these damage immunity and immune response.

Exercise is essential for maintaining vital immune function and contributes to general wellness, mental clarity, and stress reduction. An hour or more of

174 svpn-mag.com

moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity per day is recommended for children. Exercise also regulates mood, hormones, and immunity. And, of course, there are the basics of hand washing, staying home when sick, and other simple hygiene habits.

Back to school is an exciting time of mental, social, and physical connection, stress, and inspiration. So our best approach is to keep ourselves strong and prepared for everything that comes our way and stay resilient in times of challenge and novelty. In this way, we take the power of our immune systems and health into our own hands, where it belongs.

ST. LUKE’S LAUNCHES A HEALTH PLAN

Let’s talk about why

St. Luke’s Health System recently announced a new, wholly owned, not-for-profit subsidiary, St. Luke’s Health Plan, that will offer new health insurance coverage options to people across west-central and southcentral Idaho counties beginning in January 2023.

Joy Prudek engaged in a Q&A with St. Luke’s Health Plan President Matt Wolff to learn more.

Q: Why is St. Luke’s launching a health plan?

A: The new health plan entity is an exciting step in St. Luke’s multi-year journey to deliver high-quality care that is more accessible and affordable to Idaho residents. The plan’s concept is deeply rooted in St. Luke’s mission and longstanding commitment to improving people’s health through coordinated health care and affordability for patients.

Our vision to be the community’s trusted partner in providing exceptional, patient-centered care is central to everything we do. To achieve that vision, we are on a bold and ambitious journey to continually improve health care quality, access, and affordability for the communities we serve.

Consumers are telling us that premiums are increasing and their out-of-pocket costs are causing them to experience financial stress. We must do something about that, and the only way to do that is to be in the seat where we can drive. We have multiple relationships with payers through our value-based strategy, enabling us to take this next step.

Q: What is the mission, and how will you work to achieve it?

A: St. Luke’s Health Plan exists to connect people with affordable, hassle-free health care and to keep it simple. We are building better health insurance together. And we need to be focused on that ‘together’ word. It’s very powerful.

Q: What are the key tenets of the plans offered?

A: On top of access to one of the largest provider networks in the state, health plan members are eligible for $0 copays for in-network primary care, preventive care, and maternity care. Members will also have access to broad pharmacy benefits, including the St. Luke’s specialty pharmacy and prescription delivery services.

176 svpn-mag.com

Q: Would health plan members be limited to only visiting St. Luke’s facilities and clinics?

A: No. The St. Luke’s Health Partners network is one of the most comprehensive health care provider networks in the state, and St. Luke’s providers and facilities make up only onethird of it. The other two-thirds are independent practitioners and facilities who have joined the network’s effort to increase access to health care. With thousands of providers across the coverage area, members have access to the highest quality care where and when they need it.

Q: Where will St. Luke’s Health Plan offer coverage?

A: St. Luke’s Health Plan will be available for individuals, families, and businesses residing in 20 southwest Idaho counties, including Ada, Adams, Blaine, Boise, Camas, Canyon, Cassia, Custer, Elmore, Gem, Gooding, Jerome, Lemhi, Lincoln, Minidoka, Owyhee, Payette, Twin Falls, Valley, and Washington.

Q: Will St. Luke’s continue to accept other insurers?

A: St. Luke’s facilities will continue to accept most other health care insurance plans. The new health insurance plan will not alter who can receive care at St. Luke’s. St. Luke’s Health Partners will continue to engage in value-based contracts with other health insurance carriers.

Q: When will it be available?

A: Enrollment in St. Luke’s Health Plan will begin in midOctober 2022, with health insurance plans taking effect in January 2023. Plans will be available to both individuals and employers across the region. Health plans for individuals will be offered on the Idaho health insurance exchange and outside of the exchange. Employer-sponsored plan offerings will also be available for small and large groups. In addition, the development of Medicare Advantage plan options will be considered at an appropriate time.

Q: Can you tell me about your why? Why did you want to take this on?

A: I can best demonstrate that through an example. One of our neighbors became like a grandfather to our first son. He was concerned about his financial situation while experiencing some illness challenges that he just kind of avoided dealing with because he knew that if he went to the doctor, there would be a copay, and that copay was going to get in the way of him providing food for him and his sweetheart. And so, he ignored conditions for quite a long time that ultimately became a diagnosis of prostate cancer.

Being a very proud individual, he held it close and didn’t share this with us. Even after receiving that diagnosis, he chose not to see an oncologist because the oncologist in his benefit design required a $50 copay for each visit. Eventually, he received care, but it was too late. He passed way too early in life. Let’s not let a $50 copay stand in the way of somebody having years of high quality of life with those they love.

Q: What does success look like?

A: Our top priorities are removing financial and clinical barriers through our benefit design. This includes removing barriers that aren’t necessary when your doctor is accountable for your health, such as some pre-authorizations. Remaining cost conscientious is at the top, too, and that looks like $0 copays for preventative and primary care.

Q: Any final message you want to convey?

A: We are excited to build on the significant progress we’ve made in delivering greater health care value and health outcomes for Idahoans. The St. Luke’s Health Plan will connect the delivery of care with the funding of care, resulting in a simpler and cost-conscious health insurance option for our communities.

Q: Where can I find more information about St. Luke’s Health Plan?

A: For more information and customer support, visit StLukesHealthPlan.org. For general inquiries, call St. Luke’s Health Plan at 833.478.5853 or email customercare@stlukeshealthplan.org.

PIONEER SALOON

Walking into the Pioneer Saloon in Ketchum is like greeting an old friend. It’s often the first stop for locals coming home or visitors starting a memorable vacation. For more than 50 years, the Pioneer has been welcoming its loyal customers with a warm and cozy atmosphere that feels more like someone’s home than a restaurant. Renowned for perfectly aged and flavorful beef, many varieties of seafood, fresh Idaho rainbow trout, and Northwest regional specials, the Pioneer is much more than a steakhouse. Unique and historic western art fills the bar and restaurant, reminiscent of earlier days when pioneers settled in this Valley. Authentic and genuine friendly service from familiar faces will make you feel as though you have arrived home when you walk in the door. As the locals say, “If you haven’t been to the Pioneer Saloon, you haven’t been to Ketchum.”

THE SAWTOOTH CLUB

For a lot folks, locals and visitors alike, autumn is our absolute favorite time of year in the Wood River Valley, and here at The Sawtooth Club we’d like to be a part of your good times during this magical season. We’ve been one of Ketchum’s most beloved destinations for dining and cocktails since 1937 when Ernest Hemingway himself was a regular here, and nowadays we’re more popular than ever with a menu that offers a great blend of creative small plates to share, mesquite-grilled steaks, chops and ribs, healthy vegetarian dishes, fresh seafood, unique pasta bowls and much more.

In the bar enjoy handcrafted cocktails, 18 wines by the glass, and 12 ice-cold craft brews on tap. Dinner offerings this fall include mesquite-grilled Idaho trout, filet mignon, linguine with clams, chicken Senegalese, mesquite rack of lamb, grilled ribeye steak, fresh steelhead salmon, butternut squash ravioli, barbeque baby back ribs, fresh Alaskan halibut, Waygu beef meatloaf, New Orleans shellfish pasta, roasted free-range chicken, fresh steamer clams, and seared ahi salad, to name just a few.

All of our broiling and grilling is done over a live mesquite-wood fire. We do not use processed charcoal or wood chips, only authentic mesquite logs from Texas. This method of natural wood cooking generates the intense heat that sears in the flavorful juices and imparts a variety of subtle tastes and aromas to meat, poultry, and seafood.

An award-winning wine list complements the wonderful food, and cool autumn evenings around the large central fireplace are not to be missed! One visit and you’ll know why The Sawtooth Club has repeatedly been voted the “Valley’s Best Overall Restaurant and The Valley’s Best Bar!”

Top to bottom: Holiday cheer; mesquite-grilled Idaho ruby red trout; cozy fireplace with selections from our award-winning wine list; The Sawtooths in fall, our namesake mountain range.

MICHEL’S CHRISTIANIA

Few other restaurants in Ketchum are as steeped in history as the legendary Christiania. Known as “The Christy” to locals, the restaurant has been in operation since 1959 when Ernest Hemingway dined there so often he had his own table. To get your own glimpse of ski history, come to the famous Olympic Bar, where photos and mementos

from owner Michel Rudigoz’s time as the U.S. Women’s Olympic Ski Team Coach adorn the walls. For a true culinary experience, Executive Chef Laurent Loubot, who hails from Chalon-sur-Saone (Burgundy), presents classic French cuisine that is also inspired by Michel’s background in Lyon (the country’s culinary capital). Your meal will be a

pièce de résistance! Entrées like Wild Salmon in Sorrel Sauce and Braised Lamb Shank appear nightly on the menu in addition to an infusion of specials like the Poisson du Jour and Pâté de Campagne. The menu also features Lyonnaise pomme frites and fresh salads and, of course, Michel’s extensive wine list.
