“No Energy Grid Is HurricaneProof, And Storms Will Continue To Cause Power Outages, But Detailed Assessments Following 2022’s Hurricanes Ian And Nicole Showed FPL’s Investments To Storm-harden Its Energy Grid Continue To Benefit Customers, Speeding Restoration,” Said Manny Miranda, Executive Vice President Of Power Delivery For FPL

The Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) is planning to make a number of upgrades in Hollywood as part of its ongoing effort to improve resiliency in the face of severe weather. Part of these investments include moving more power lines underground, strengthening overhead lines and installing more intelligent devices along the energy grid to help detect potential problems and restore power faster when outages do occur. The investments have the added benefit of improving day-to-day reliability for customers as well. With Hurricane Season approaching it’s a good time to plan for the future and that’s exactly what FPL is doing. Florida Power & Light has multiple projects to make the electric grid in Hollywood more resilient during and after a store as well as for the future. One of their plans is the ‘One Storm Secure

Southern Art is highlighted throughout “If You Only Knew,” including a section he curated featuring works from Artists such as Miami native Purvis Young, Thornton Dial, Mary T. Smith and Hawkins Bowling.

The “South Florida Cultural Consortium” (SFCC) Exhibition brings together 12 artists working across various media including sculpture, film and site-specific installations. The Exhibition, this year hosted and organized by MOCA, provides a snapshot of the breadth and depth of the artistic talent in the South Florida Art Scene.

On view outside the museum from late June through late August is MOCA’s most recent “Art on the Plaza” Commission, LIZN’BOW (Liz Ferrer and Bow Ty)’s “El Mundo Es Magico.” The sculpture, “El Mundo Es Magico,” features displaced queer characters in a mix of reality and fantasy within Miami iconography, inviting conversations of fluidity, gender, class and identity. Central to the duo’s work is the feminist reimagining of each element towards a more inclusive, fantastical worldview.

On view through Sunday, June 25th, 2023, visitors will be able to step into MOCA’s Paradise Courtyard and discover “Victory Garden,” an interactive sculptural community garden created by Miami-based Artist Emmett Moore. Drawing inspiration from victory gardens of the past, which were planted during wartime to supplement rations and boost morale, Moore’s “Victory Garden” connects the local community with contemporary art and encourages visitors to reflect on their relationship with the built environment.

Neighbors Say “Ole!”

To Mermaid Queen Fine Mexican Dining on Hollywood Beach

Taco fans are rejoicing about the opening of The Mermaid Queen, a new Mexican Fusion Restaurant at 300 South Broadwalk. This newest entry into Hollywood’s beachfront eatery lineup is the latest from long-time Hollywood restaurateur and entrepreneur Jenny Bianca, founder of former Broadwalk favorite The Taco Spot.

But the new place is more than just tacos.

“The Mermaid Queen actually has three separate menus,” explained Bianca, who is partnering with her Argentinian-born husband, Diego Mendelson, on the new endeavor. “While the front terrace serves the same favorites that were available at the Taco Spot, there is also a full takeaway section so people can bring their food down to the beach. And what is especially exciting is that we now also have a dining room for fine, upscale Mexican cuisine, with an emphasis on seafood.”

Bianca has been a mainstay of Hollywood Beach for over 20 years, since she first arrived in Florida from Mexico. She ran a small beachwear business, selling to all the Broadwalk boutiques, and counts most of the Broadwalk business and property owners among her customers. She loves working in Hollywood, because “It reminds me of my home in Cancun,” she said, and the Broadwalk

Underground Program (SSUP) Project.’

The program started in 2018 to replace more overhead neighborhood power lines with underground service.

The Storm Secure Under-ground Program analyzes data from past hurricanes, vegetation-related service interruptions and other reliability metrics to identify areas in Hollywood and the surrounding communities that would most benefit from having power lines placed underground.

Another storm related project is to strengthen 10 main power lines in the area, including those that serve critical services that are necessary for communities to recover faster after major storms. Part of this plan includes maintaining trees and vegetation which is a common cause of power outages, particularly during hurricanes and severe weather along 252 miles of power lines.

FPL is not just focusing on the lines themselves, but they will also be inspecting 3,267 power poles in Hollywood as part of an eight-year inspection cycle. If needed they will strengthen or replace those that no longer meet FPL’s industry-

Mystic Coffee

A Downtown Hollywood Gathering Place

“I have traveled the whole world, and everywhere I went, there were coffee houses,” said Ivan Lopez, a native of Chile and owner, with his wife, Argentinian-born Agustina Avila, of Mystic Coffee at 2000 Harrison Street #8. “And always, I have had in the back of my head to open a coffee house, and I have been collecting ideas.”

When other business brought them to Florida, they decided to stay. Soon an opportunity to open a coffee house arose, and the couple jumped on it.

“There was no coffee house in Downtown Hollywood where you could sit, talk and work,” Lopez continued. “Plus, we follow a healthy lifestyle, and I also realized that there was no bakery in the area where we could find the nosugar, organic, gluten-free things we wanted.”

And so was born Mystic Coffee, which recently relocated a few steps down from their original location to a space nearly triple the size. Lopez and Avila designed it to be more than just a coffee house, and it’s evident upon entering the large, beautiful, and welcoming space.

“We took our design ideas from all over the world,” Lopez explained. “We wanted a place where everyone could come to sit and talk, with different areas, a community table, a library, and all different types of styles in one place.”

Beyond the design, and more impor-

was her first choice of location for The Mermaid Queen.

“I do know a lot of people here,” she affirmed. “This location is more residential, different than the other places, and gives us many opportunities that we didn’t have before. The time was right, with all the new investment and redevelopment in the area, and the increased foot traffic which continues to attract new businesses and more people to Hollywood.”

Since The Mermaid Queen opened, Bianca reports, some of the most popular dishes have featured seafood, including seafood tacos ($3.75 - $5.25), shrimp quesadillas ($16.00), ceviche ($14.25$18.50), and burritos ($14.00 - $17.00). In the inside dining room, popular dishes include the Come Back to Life Seafood Soup ($17.00), the Grilled Octopus ($25.00 - $32.00), and the Chipotle Sword Fish ($23.50).

“Everything is extremely fresh,” noted Mendelson, adding that they make everything from scratch.

The bar features beer, wine, and a range of cocktails made from wine-based liquors which taste (and work!) like the real thing.

“We have big dreams for the next few years,” said Bianca. “We see this area becoming more of a destination on Hollywood Beach; we want it to become known as The Mermaid Queen Beach!”

leading standards. Along with upgrading power lines and poles, FPL will be installing smart grid technology, including 32 automated switches on main and neighborhood power lines to help detect problems and restore service faster when outages occur.

Sometimes you can’t see every potential problem with the naked eye, so FPL will be inspecting 96 main power lines and equipment using infrared technology. Infrared cameras can find otherwise undetectable issues with power lines and equipment. This infrared camera technology helps FPL locate many potential problems and address them before they cause an outage.

When the planned 2023 work is completed, FPL will have made the following improvements in and near Hollywood since the historic 2004-2005 hurricane seasons:

• Strengthened 56 main power lines, including those that serve critical services.

• Inspected and maintained vegetation near 2,982 miles of power lines -- an average of 175 miles per year.

• Inspected all 20,351 power poles every eight years.

The Mermaid Queen is open seven days a week from 11 am to 10 pm. For more information, please call: 305-733-

6117 or visit them at: www.themermaid queen.us, or on Instagram @TheMermaid Queenn.

• Installed smart grid technology, including 1,940 automated switches on main and neighborhood power lines.

• Inspected 162 main power lines and equipment using infrared technology.

“No energy grid is hurricane-proof and storms will continue to cause power outages, but detailed assessments following 2022’s Hurricanes Ian and Nicole showed FPL’s investments to storm-harden its energy grid continue to benefit customers, speeding restoration,” said Manny Miranda, Executive Vice President of Power Delivery for FPL.

Strengthening power poles, managing trees and vegetation near power lines, installing smart grid technology to fix problems before they affect customers and using robots and drones to regularly inspect equipment have all helped FPL improve its service reliability by 41% since 2006. These upgrades have helped reduce both the number and duration of outages, as well as the number of momentary interruptions or power flickers.

SSUP is a concerted effort to place more neighborhood power lines underground. It is designed to help speed res toration efforts, reduce restoration costs and reduce customer outages. FPL com

pleted more than 1,200 SSUP projects since SSUP started and will expand the program in 2023, with about 750 projects planned across the state.

“We are committed to investing in innovative solutions and technology,” said Ben Wesley, Local External Affairs Manager for FPL. “We work year-round so our customers across Florida can resume their normal lives safely and as quickly as possible after storms.”

In 2022, for the seventh time in eight years, FPL was awarded the ReliabilityOne® National Reliability Award. Presented by PA Consulting, the award is widely regarded in the energy industry as one of the most prestigious honors and reinforces FPL’s commitment to provide customers with the nation’s most reliable service.

FPL is America’s largest electric utility, Florida Power & Light Company serves more customers and sells more power than any other utility, providing clean, affordable, reliable electricity to approximately 5.8 million accounts, or more than 12 million people.

tant, is the food and drink, with the menu designed by Avila, “the genius behind the menu,” said her proud husband. How does she do it?

“A lot of training, a lot of courses, and just practicing, and trying and trying and trying,” she laughed. “It’s super fun in the kitchen, like a lab. It takes a lot of research to achieve the right recipes.”

Everything at Mystic Coffee is sugarfree, using other natural sources to add sweetness and flavors. Everything is organic, all baked goods (“treats”) use almond flour and are non-gluten, and there are options for all diets: keto, vegan, gluten-free, and other food sensitivities.

Mystic Coffee carries a full range of sandwiches on different breads, salads, soups, empanadas and more; always healthy, always organic, and free of any processed ingredients. Among the most popular items on the menu are the lemon and banana breads ($3.95 - $22.00), the Mystic Toast (creamy avocado, tomato, eggs, mozzarella cheese, greens, and seasoning ($15.95), and the chocolatecovered marzipan with almond flour, rose petals and crunchy almond topping. ($3.00). The clear winner from the coffee

Mystic Coffee often hosts a line-up of meetings with full menus, yoga classes, and talks on a variety of psychological and “mystic” topics. (Both Lopez and Avila are trained in psychotherapy, among their other varied skills.) Event space and catering are also available.

“From a business point of view,” said Lopez, “Downtown Hollywood has a lot of potential — just look at all the building, all the new projects. You can see what’s going to be happening in the next few years; there’s going to be a lot of opportunity.”

Indeed, with its redevelopment, new investment, increased foot traffic, and streetscape improvements, which continue to attract new businesses and more people to Downtown Hollywood, the couple believed the time was right for a place that is clean and healthy, a place where you can work, talk, and feel comfortable

— and drink coffee.

“We want to be part of the growth of the city,” he continued. “To build something that makes people want to come to Downtown Hollywood. A place that makes people say ‘We need to go to Hollywood and go to Mystic Coffee.’”

Improving Health For Under-Served Communities

Memorial Has Unveiled a Population Health Initiative Called “One City at a Time”

For more than 70 years, Memorial Healthcare System has provided care at its facilities to individuals from communities in south Broward County, regardless of the person’s ability to pay. Now, the health-focused provider is taking things a step further, increasing access for uninsured and underinsured children and adults by providing services directly from underserved locations.

Memorial has unveiled a population health initiative called “One City at a Time” that will station Memorial Primary Care Mobile Health Centers, or mobile units, within cities in south Broward for extended periods of time. Medical professionals with expertise in both pediatric and adult medicine will be onsite to provide vaccines, conduct health screenings and school physicals, and offer nutritional counseling. Additionally, they can make referrals to dentists, determine Medicaid eligibility, and link individuals to social services.

“We know that not having easy access to care is one of the social determinants that impact a person’s overall health,” said Melida Akiti, vice president of the Ambulatory Program and Community Services at Memorial Primary Care. “This effort is focused on removing barriers and increasing trust among people that often feel society has left them behind.”

Memorial’s program began with a kickoff event May 20 at Foster Park in Hallandale Beach. Memorial’s mobile units will then be stationed at that location every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday for six weeks. After that, they will remain in the community one day a week for two years. Similar outreach is planned in the next year for locations in Miramar, Dania Beach, and Hollywood. No appointment is necessary and there is never a charge for any of the services provided.

The Memorial program will focus on

improving the overall health of those in the community and introduce needy audiences to care that may prevent or treat chronic conditions. Surveys will be conducted in July of this year and again in 2025 to evaluate success.

Memorial Primary Care, part of Memorial Healthcare System, is dedicated to providing high-quality, compassionate, patient-centered care. With numerous locations and outreach throughout South

Government Ethics

With Power and Authority Comes Responsibility and Obligations

Ethical government is different from everyday ethical behavior; it is not about being “good” or a “person of integrity.”

Behavior that is commendable outside of government, like helping a family member get a post or repaying a favor one has been given, is considered wrong in a government setting.

Government ethics is the area of decision-making involving conflicts between the obligations government officials have toward the public, and their obligations to themselves and their family, their business associates, and others with whom they have a special relationship (known as “conflicts of interest”).

It is not just the reality of these responsibilities and actions, but also the appearance of these obligations and relationships. As elected officials, we make cer-

tain sacrifices to show the community that we are acting in the best interest of the community rather than for ourselves and those we hold as special. To some officials, this seems unfair. After all, elected officials have already sacrificed, serving as low-paid legislators and giving up their precious time for the community. Why should they have to sacrifice more? The reason is obvious. With power and authority comes responsibility and obligations. Obligations require sacrifice.

It is critical officials recognize that government ethics is not only beneficial to a community’s residents, but also to them. It protects the mayor and commission by providing rules and best practices, allowing us to deal with our obligations to others in situations that may be very uncomfortable. It takes just one decision that appears self-serving to lose the respect

Make Family Memories This Summer

The Best Part Of A Road Trip Is That Quality Time Is Built Into It

There’s a reason summer is a popular time to vacation. With the kids out of school, and the weather warming up, take advantage of the sunshine and your family’s more flexible schedule to share experiences and strengthen your family bonds.

Yes, I know, we live in a vacation destination, but what if you want something different. This year will be an especially popular year for vacations. Do you crave an escape from your daily routine - 64% of people say they do - if even for a few days? In a recent study conducted by Mintel, in partnership with Kalahari Resorts & Conventions, nearly 62% of parents intend to take more family vacations in 2023 than they did in 2022, and 77% said their goal was to make memories and 74% to have fun.

Are you ready to start planning your vacation? Check out these three family vacation ideas that are perfect for having fun and making memories together this summer.

1. Explore A New City Exploring a new city together can be a fun and exciting adventure for the whole family! Choose a destination and make a list of must-see spots and activities so you can plan accordingly. Your list should include restaurants for the foodies in your family, amusement parks and attractions for the thrill seekers, shops for the fashionistas and a spa visit for those who want to relax.

Don’t overload your itinerary!

Remember, your family should come back

from vacation feeling refreshed. Build in downtime in between events and outings, too. Quiet, relaxing moments together allow everyone to recharge for the next activity and allow you to reflect on the memories you’re making.

2. Take A Road Trip

A family road trip is the quintessential American vacation experience and for good reason. According to the Mintel study, 50% of parents prefer to drive and 72% of parents say it’s important to pick a destination they can drive to.

No two road trips are alike. Even if you’re taking the same route as others, when and where you decide to stop is completely up to your family, making each road trip a unique experience.

When planning a road trip, you can pick one or several destinations and plan for pit stops along the way. Also, the flexibility of a road trip means you can stop and explore a town or attraction on your route that piques your interest with minimal disruption to your planned itinerary.

The best part of a family road trip is that quality time is built into it. Spending time together in the car gives you plenty of opportunities to connect and talk about what you’re most excited to see and experience.

3. Stay At A Resort A family vacation at a resort is a great way to have fun while taking the stress out of trip planning. Instead of going out to several locations in one city, you can

Florida, its highly-skilled team of healthcare professionals works to meet each individual’s needs in a friendly and culturally-sensitive environment. South Florida-based Memorial Healthcare System (www.mhs.net) is a national leader in quality care and patient, physician, and employee satisfaction. Its commitment to deeper caring and smarter health prioritizes a person-centered approach that has delivered safe, positive

outcomes for more than 70 years.

Memorial is focused on removing barriers, increasing access, and providing equitable care throughout the region. It employs a staff of more than 15,000 and operates six hospitals, numerous primary, urgent, and 24/7 care facilities, medical office buildings, a health specialty center, and nursing home.

participate; they feel disconnected from their government and start to believe the government is designed to benefit the members of the commission, rather than serve the community. The opposite of trust is not distrust, which we need to keep our representatives accountable, but a lack of trust. A lack of trust causes peo-

sions as fair. A democratic government does not thrive when there is a lack of

tutional rather than personal integrity. In short, we are held to a higher ethical standard.

There’s also a full-service spa experience for prime pampering in between activities. Don’t forget to stop at the unique retail shops to pick up souvenirs and gifts to commemorate your trip. You can choose from one of four conveniently located resorts Wisconsin Dells,

Wisconsin; Sandusky, Ohio; Pocono Mountains, Pennsylvania and Round Rock, Texas, pick a route and enjoy a road trip to your resort vacation. And no need to worry about the weather! Mintel found that 81% of parents say it is important to pick a location they can enjoy that is not dependent on the weather. That’s not a problem because it’s always sunny and 84 degrees inside Kalahari, so you can enjoy a true summer vacation no matter what it’s doing outside. Understanding The Often-Complex Development Rules

Recently our neighbors at Towers of Oceanview received a notice of a Community Meeting for a development taking place in Hollywood at the Diplomat Planned Development area. I was made aware of the meeting from the condominium president of the master association. At that time, I explained that the city nor I received the notice probably since it was a site plan meeting, not a land use meeting.

The Diplomat Hotel was developed in early 2000. The beach and golf course at that time was purchased with money from the Pipefitter Pension Fund. The golf course property is in Hallandale Beach with some of the course in Hollywood. During the approvals in Hallandale Beach, we charged part of the land use from Commercial Recreational to a dash line hotel site to accommodate the Hotel, Conference Center, Spa, Tennis Center and Marina. The original site did have a hotel and golf course but was spread out not condensed into a small footprint.

The total course was redone and upgraded. The hotel that is currently on the course was built. Units on Diplomat Parkway and along the water were torn down and the marina was added. Where the new Slate tower was added was always a separate parcel that was incorporated into the course to

expand the golf holes.

On the Hollywood side, everything was torn down and the Hotel was built with the parking garages across the street. This whole area was established as an entire development site with specific entitlements. At the writing of this article, I had yet to get the old records so for the sake of explanation I will call it a Local Activity Center. It may be a Planned Development District. Entitlements are what the developer can build on the land. It can be Commercial, Hotel, Hotel/ Condo or Residential Condominium. The use is applied and then there are approvals for the number of units, types, and square footage of the commercial property.

Once these rights are granted by the local authority, they cannot be taken away without the owner’s agreement. They by right are entitled. If a local planning agency attempts to reduce those rights, the owner has what is called a Bert J. Harris, Jr. Act and they can sue the government.

Large scale plans like the Diplomat go through a rigorous approval process.

First the city must review applications to be consistent with their Comprehensive Plan. Comprehensive Plans address all impacts of Water, Wastewater, Traffic, Transportation, Environmental, School, Housing, and other levels of services. If they cannot not meet these

requirements they are either amended or not recommended by staff. Then the LPA holds hearings. It goes to multiple public hearings. In our case, we first require a community meeting then advisory board meeting then a commission hearing.

After the first round of public hearings at the LPA level, the applications go to Broward County, South Florida Regional Planning Council then the state for review. It comes back and then finally adopted at two final hearings. Once these PDD’s or LAC’s are approved, the developer has rights to build. It then goes to site planning. The area can be built all at once or in phases. Each phase must go through site planning.

These areas can be modified. In the case of the Diplomat Hotel back in 2019, Hollywood amended the land use. At this point in time, I am not certain if they simply changed the mix or amount of hotel-toHotel Condo and/or residential. The change was approved and went through the legal process and now the residential units are in front of the Hollywood LPA and Commission for approval.

Our city requirement is different than it is with the city of Hollywood. Years ago when I was first elected, I had to learn all about the process. In doing so, I learned quickly that the most important component of the process was public notice and

communication. I pushed to adopt the “Citizens Bill Of Rights” for land use. It expanded the notification process for all public hearings and added the community meeting component. Our distance for public notice for land use expanded to a mile. Zoning and Site changes also were expanded for 500 feet to 1,000 feet.

In the case of the Diplomat, Hollywood was not required to notify our city or our commission. Adjacent property owners within 500 feet from a site

plan is why only Towers of Oceanview, were the ones that were aware of the meeting. Our City Staff has been in touch with Hollywood. At this point, there will be a public meeting and if not two, I will keep our residents informed.

There are two events coming up! This Saturday we will open Sunrise Park on June 3rd, 2023 at 10:00

am. Come out and join us at 416 Northeast 8th Avenue, Hallandale Beach.

Also, on Tuesday, June 6th, 2023, I will be delivering the State of the City Address at Gulfstream Park at 12:00 p.m. in the Flamingo Room. For more information, you can visit the Hallandale Chamber of Commerce at: www.Hallan daleBeachChamber.org

Celebrating Father’s Day: A Historical Tribute with Culinary Delights

Father’s Day, a joyous celebration honoring fathers and father figures, holds a significant place in our hearts. This special occasion, with a rich history spanning centuries, reminds us of the profound influence and love fathers bring to our lives. In this article, we delve into the captivating journey of Father’s Day, exploring its origins, cultural significance, and the evolution of traditions. To make this Father’s Day truly memorable, we also present a selection of mouthwatering recipes, designed to delight your dad’s taste buds and showcase your appreciation in a delicious way.

The story of Father’s Day can be traced back to the early 20th century when Sonora Smart Dodd, inspired by Mother’s Day, sought to establish a similar day of recognition for fathers. In 1910, Dodd, from Spokane, Washington, proposed celebrating Father’s Day on her own father’s birthday, June 5th. Although the idea initially faced resistance, her persistence and passion eventually led to the official recognition of Father’s Day as a national holiday in the United States.

The concept of Father’s Day quickly gained popularity across the globe, with countries embracing the opportunity to honor and appreciate fathers. In 1972, the United Nations officially recognized Father’s Day as a worldwide celebration, encouraging nations to observe this day and recognize the vital role of fathers in society.

Today, Father’s Day is celebrated on different dates worldwide, ranging from the third Sunday in June in most countries to alternative dates like March 19th, the feast day of St. Joseph in Catholic tradition.

Does Dad Need A New Grill?

There’s nothing like sunshine, a warm breeze and the smell of delicious food on the grill to remind you of good times with Dad. If you’ve been anticipating getting your dad a new grill, wait no longer! According to the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association, Father’s Day is the perfect opportunity to celebrate everything you love about outdoor cooking. If you already have a grill, this is a great time to upgrade, so you can cook more dishes for bigger get-togethers, or to try a different kind of grill, letting you experiment with new techniques like using a smoker.

What kind of grill is best for your Dad?

It depends on the space, what you like to cook and how you like to prepare it. First, ask yourself the following questions:

How much time does he spend cooking? If he’s got a busy schedule, you may prefer the convenience of gas or electric grills. However, if you know he loves spending time perfecting the perfect outdoor meal, he may enjoy a charcoal grill,

smoker or kamado grill.

How much space do you have? Do you host frequent large gatherings? Go big on your barbecue size to optimize these special occasions. For a big backyard, a larger grill with a kitchen island can create a focal point for entertaining. But a premium portable or compact grill is your best option if you live in a condo or apartment, or for a cabin or other vacation destination with limited space.

What does he love to cook? Many grills offer extra features for particular foods. Think rotisseries if he loves roasted chicken, or side burners for soups and stews. Crave the ‘za? Consider a grill with ample space for pizza stones.

To help him discover his next favorite grill, here are the features of five major grill types to consider when making your choice.

Gas

If you want convenience and faster meal prep, a

mium grill offers many more features to enjoy and tends to last longer, providing a stronger return on your investment.

Ready to get out there and cook? Get back to barbecue with this delicious recipe for Grilled Chicken Fajitas from Food Writer Brad Prose, Founder of Chiles and Smoke. All you need is two pounds of Chicken Wings, Mexican Seasonings like Chili Powder, Chipotle Powder, Ginger and Limes for a tasty Marinade (4-12 hours), then you can wow your friends and family by grilling or smoking these flavorful Wings.

First and foremost, Father’s Day allows us to recognize and celebrate the unique qualities that make dads so special. Whether it’s their boundless strength, their unwavering commitment, or their unconditional love, fathers possess an incredible ability to provide a sense of security and stability within the family. They are the pillars of strength, the protectors, and the providers, always ready to lend a helping hand or offer words of wisdom. By celebrating fathers on this dedicated day, we acknowledge their role as positive male role models, promoting a healthy and nurturing environment for future generations.

Moreover, Father’s Day offers an opportunity for reflection and gratitude. It is a time to look back on the countless sacrifices dads make for their families. From working long hours to supporting their loved ones to sacrificing personal interests and dreams, fathers often put their family’s needs above their own. This day allows us to express our gratitude for their selflessness and to acknowledge the hard work they put into shaping our lives. Taking a moment to say “thank you” and show appreciation for all that dads do can make a profound impact on their wellbeing and sense of fulfillment.

Celebrating dads on Father’s Day is also an occasion to foster deeper connections and create lasting memories. In our fast-paced lives, it’s easy to get caught up in the daily hustle and lose sight of what truly matters. Father’s Day serves as a reminder to slow down, spend quality time with our dads, and strengthen the bonds that hold us together.

As the world shifts towards a more sustainable future, the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) has gained significant momentum. With the numerous benefits they offer, such as reduced carbon emissions and lower operating costs, EVs are becoming increasingly popular among environmentally conscious individuals.

Florida, known for its vibrant lifestyle and commitment to environmental conservation, is no exception to this trend. In light of this growing demand, Florida Condominium Boards should proactively address EV charging capacity in their parking garages, lots, and paved common areas. By doing so, they not only cater to the needs of current and future residents but also embrace good business practices that promote long-term success.

A fundamental principle of good business practice is to gather as much information as possible prior to making decisions and starting installations. In the case of EV charging infrastructure, this principle holds even greater importance.

Condominium Boards should conduct thorough research to understand the requirements and implications of incorporating EV charging stations into their properties. This includes evaluating the existing electrical infrastructure, potential costs and funding sources, available technologies, legal and regulatory considerations. By gathering this information, Condominium Boards can make wellinformed decisions that align with the needs and goals of their communities.

One key advantage of addressing EV charging capacity is the ability to attract and retain residents who own or plan to own electric vehicles. The number of EV owners is on the rise, and potential buyers are increasingly considering the availability of charging infrastructure when choosing their place of residence. By proactively installing EV charging stations, Condominium Boards can position their properties as desirable and forwardthinking, appealing to eco-conscious individuals who prioritize sustainability and green living. This strategic move not only contributes to the overall satisfaction of existing residents but also expands the potential market for future buyers, ensuring a higher property value in the long run.

Moreover, installing EV charging stations presents an excellent revenue opportunity for Condominium Boards. As the demand for EV charging infrastructure increases, so does the potential for monetization. By partnering with reputable charging network providers, Condominium Boards can implement payper-use charging models that generate additional income for the community. This revenue can be allocated towards maintenance and improvement projects, ensuring the long-term financial stability of the condominium complex. Embracing EV charging infrastructure is not just an environmental decision; it is a wise financial investment that can yield substantial returns in the form of increased property value and sustainable income generation.

In terms of installation logistics, Condominium Boards must consider the most suitable locations for EV charging stations within their properties. Parking garages, lots, and paved common areas present viable options for accommodating charging infrastructure. Careful planning is necessary to ensure optimal accessibility and convenience for EV owners, without disrupting the overall functionality of parking spaces and common areas. Collaborating with professional electricians and architects can help in designing charging infrastructure that seamlessly integrates into the existing environment, maximizing efficiency and user satisfaction.

Addressing EV charging capacity also aligns with Florida’s commitment to clean energy and sustainable development. The state has been actively promoting the use of renewable energy sources and embracing green technologies. By supporting the transition to electric vehicles, Florida Condominium Boards contribute to the state’s goals of reducing carbon emissions and dependence on fossil fuels. Furthermore, implementing EV charging infrastructure promotes a culture of environmental awareness and responsibility among residents, fostering a sense of community and shared values. It also positions the condominium complex as an environmentally conscious entity, contributing to Florida’s reputation as a leader in sustainable living.

Florida Condominium Boards should proactively address EV charging capacity in their parking garages, lots, and paved common areas. This strategic decision not only caters to the needs and preferences of current and future residents but also aligns with good business practices that promote long-term success.

Eligible participants must own or lease an electric vehicle and own and live in a single-family home or townhome with an attached garage.

EV drivers living in a multi-unit dwelling (e.g., apartment, condo, etc.) should contact their HOA to see if their property management company has plans to install EV charging infrastructure. If your HOA is not in discussions to add charging stations to your property, now is the time to start. As more and more residents buy EV’s, the need will only become greater.

To look for public charging stations in their area or plan out their trip and find charging along the way, they can download the FPL EVolution App, or visit: www.FPL.com/EV FPL is exploring the ability to develop EV charging solutions for multi-unit dwellings, but for now there are many public options to choose from. Florida Power And Light Company has positioned itself as a driving force in powering Florida with EV charging capacity. By offering technical expertise, financial incentives, and streamlined processes, FPL supports residents in their transition to sustainable transportation solutions. Through their comprehensive programs, FPL enables drivers to embrace the benefits of electric vehicles while contributing to Florida’s vision of a cleaner and greener future.

Hurricane Season Begins This Week: Stay Informed And Be Prepared

Thursday, June 1st marks the start of the 2023 Atlantic Hurricane Season. A hurricane can cause major headaches for you and your family - power outages, long lines at gasoline stations and supermarkets, limited medical supplies, not being able to stay informed, etc. The best way to minimize these and many other problems is to be prepared.

Don’t wait until a hurricane threatens our region to think about what you need to safeguard you and your family. Families should be finalizing plans now to determine essentials such as how much water your family needs, where you will go if you need to evacuate before a storm hits and how you will stay in contact with loved ones.

Some important points to consider when preparing your hurricane plan and gathering supplies:

• Self Sufficiency: Plan on being self-sufficient for at least seven days after a hurricane hits your area. Emergency crews and government agencies will likely be tending to the hardest hit areas, so you should not rely on their assistance immediately following a storm. Organize your hurricane kit at: https://www.ready.gov/kit

• Evacuations: Do you live in an evacuation zone?

If so, do you know where you will go if an evacuation order is issued for your area? Only go as far as you need to get to a safe location. Leaving the county and driving long distances is not advisable. A storm may change direction at any time, and debris scattered by a storm may make returning extremely difficult.

• Don’t Plan on Evacuating? Help Us Notify Your Loved Ones If You Don’t Survive: If you live in an evacuation zone but do not plan on heading to a safe location following an evacuation order, the City of Hollywood respectfully requests to help first responders identify you and notify a loved one if you do not survive the storm that you submit a Next of Kin Information Form by visiting: https://www.hollywoodfl.org/FormCenter/ Emergency-Management-Next-of-Kin-Informa28/Next-of-Kin-Information-Form-308

• Shelters: Going to a hurricane evacuation shelter should be considered a last resort. They can get full and do not have the comforts of a friend’s or relative’s home.

• Evacuation routes and zone map visit: https:// www.broward.org/Hurricane/Pages/ EvacuationRoutes.aspx

• Evacuation shelter information visit: chromeextension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/ https://www.broward.org/Hurricane/Documents/ PI201867423EmergencyMapA.pdf

• Emergency Contacts: Establish reliable emergency contacts inside and outside our region to ensure that your loved ones know the status of you and your family.

• Special Medical Needs: Have a relative with special medical needs? Be sure to make appropriate arrangements for them. You also can register them for accommodation at a Special Medical Needs Shelter, visit: https://www.broward.org/ AtRisk/pages/specialneeds.aspx To request or obtain an application for a Special Needs Shelter and/or Paratransit evacuation transportation, including applications in alternative formats, call Broward County Emergency Management at: (954) 831-3902 Or TTY at: (954) 831-3940. Need prescription medication following a hurricane/emergency? Learn what pharmacies are open in your area during an emergency by visiting: http://www.rxopen.org/

• Pets: Don’t forget your pets! Make sure you have enough food and water for them and you keep them indoors with you during a storm. If you have to evacuate and would like to inquire about placing your pet in a pet-friendly shelter, please call the Humane Society of Broward County at: (954) 989-3977.

The Puppy Timeline: How To Socialize Your Furry Friend

Knowing how to socialize your furry friend throughout their time as a puppy can ensure that they adjust and become a happy and healthy lifelong member of your family

Socializing is important for raising pup pies into Emotionally Healthy dogs, just as caring for a puppy’s growing needs is important to Physical and Mental Health. In order to have a well-adjusted and social dog, owners should provide training specific to each stage of a puppy’s development.

Harmony Diers, a Veterinary Technician at the Texas A&M School of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, provides ways to socialize puppies during the five stages of growth.

In the neonatal stage, or the first two weeks of a puppy’s life, Diers suggests owners gently hold their puppies for short periods of time to begin the socialization process. When puppies hit the transitional stage, between 2-4 weeks of age, they begin to socialize on their own by playing with their littermates. Diers recommends owners continue to hold their puppies in the transitional phase to assist in their socialization.

One of the most important stages in developing a dog’s personality, according to Diers, is the socialization stage, which lasts between 3-12 weeks of age.

“Most of what puppies learn about socialization occurs in this stage,” Diers said. “Exposure to positive human interactions and new activities, situations, and experiences will help puppies gain confidence in their interactions with a variety of people, objects, sounds, and events.”

Examples of positive experiences include taking puppies on short car rides; introducing them to more toys and new objects, such as leashes and brushes;

meeting new dogs and people; and exposing them to new environments.

“When meeting new dogs, it is important to ensure that the ‘new’ dog is friendly to avoid injuring the puppies; the

too hard or the playing was too rough.”

Lastly, puppies become more aware of their relationship with humans in the beginning of the socialization stage, and by the end of the stage, their interest in

to a dog being rehomed or taken to a shelter.

“It is of vital importance for training and socialization to continue because puppies are very sensitive and receptive to behavior modifications during the juvenile stage, much more than an older puppy or adult dog,” Diers said.

Finally, Diers emphasizes that training young dogs is crucial in the last development stage – the adolescent stage, which occurs between 618 months of age – because they are more capable of learning commands and tricks than in earlier phases.

“By adolescence, a puppy has an increased attention span and more Hormones that will increase energy,” Diers said. “Training your puppy to channel that energy appropriately can reduce unwanted behaviors. In addition, it is great mental stimulation and social behavior practice to teach your puppy to work for things (sit, stay, shake hands, lay down, etc.). For example, teaching them to sit and wait before doing an action will help them focus on their owner’s instruction, thus resulting in more polite behavior and a connection to their owner.”

tings, such as dog parks or pet supply stores, so that they are not susceptible to viruses and diseases. Instead, puppies can visit their own backyard or the house/ yard of a friend or family member.”

During the socialization stage, puppies continue to play with their littermates and learn bite inhibition as well.

“Bite inhibition refers to a puppy learning how hard to bite their playmate based on the reaction they get from that playmate,” Diers explained. “As a puppy bites and wrestles with their littermates, the other puppy may yelp or recoil from the bite or play, indicating that the bite was

position in their pack, so it will become more obvious which puppies are more outgoing and dominant or shy and submissive,” Diers said. “It is often this stage of development that determines the future behavior of a dog.”

Owners should be aware of certain behaviors – such as aggression over food and objects or fear of new stimuli –because puppies left to continue aggressive or fearful behaviors often grow into an adult with these behaviors, which can lead
