As the new school year begins, parents often look for ways to support their children’s learning at home. One of the most impactful areas to focus on (especially in the early years) is reading. Developing strong reading habits from the start both sets the stage for academic success and helps children grow into curious, confident, and capable learners. The good news? Building reading habits doesn’t have to be boring or stressful. In fact, it can be a lot of fun! In my role as the Founder of ReadBright (a highly effective structured literacy program for beginning readers), I have seen firsthand how the right approach can help kids build strong reading skills with confidence and joy. Whether your child is just beginning kindergarten or settling into the early elementary years, these eight engaging strategies can

Common AI Travel Scams & How To Avoid Them
It’s an unfortunate truth that the travel industry has always been a prime target for scammers. And with the rapid advancement of AI technology, con artists have found new, more sophisticated ways to deceive unsuspecting travelers. Through the use of AI, scammers are now able to create highly convincing fake travel booking websites, phishing emails, and even voice impersonations, all designed to steal travelers’ personal and financial information.
If you are planning an upcoming trip, it’s crucial to understand the latest AIpowered travel scams and how to protect yourself. As the Chief Information Officer at SlickTrip (a platform that instantly compares top travel sites and alerts of flight price drops), I have seen firsthand how rapidly these scams are evolving and how much they can wreak havoc on travelers’ lives. Below are 4 of the most common AIdriven threats targeting travelers today, the red flags to watch for, and what to do if you find yourself caught in one.
AI-Generated Deepfake Customer Service Agents
One of the most alarming scams is the use of AI-generated voices to create deepfake customer service representatives. Scammers use advanced voice synthesis to mimic the voices of real airline or hotel employees. They call unsuspecting travelers posing as legitimate customer support agents, often using publicly available information or previous data breaches to make their calls seem authentic. The goal? To trick travelers into divulging sensitive information such as booking references, credit card numbers, or even login credentials to loyalty programs.
Because these AI voices sound incredibly realistic, many victims do not suspect a thing until it’s too late. To protect yourself, first always verify the caller’s identity by asking for their official employee ID or calling back through official contact numbers found on verified websites. Also, never share payment information or passwords over the phone unless you initiated the call and are certain of the recipient’s identity. Finally, use two-factor authentication (2FA) on your travel and payment accounts to add an extra layer of security.
AI-Generated Phishing Emails
Mimicking Booking Confirmations
Email phishing attacks have become much more sophisticated with the help of
AI. For example, scammers now use AI to generate emails that are almost indistinguishable from legitimate booking confirmations or notifications from airlines, hotels, or travel agencies. These emails can include the company’s actual logos, brand colors, and writing styles, making them seem incredibly trustworthy at a glance. However, they contain malicious links or attachments designed to steal your credit card details, install malware on your device, and more.
To prevent an AI-generated phishing email scam, there are several main warning signs to keep in mind. First, look out for any slight grammatical errors or sentences that are phrased awkwardly in an email or SMS message, even if the rest of the message looks polished. Legitimate emails and messages from real travel booking companies will be free of these kinds of errors. Another red flag is a request to click on links or download attachments unexpectedly. On top of this, another red flag is the email urging immediate action or threatening consequences to provoke a quick, unthinking response.
To stay safe from these kinds of scams, make sure to cross-check booking details by logging into the airline or hotel’s official website directly, rather than clicking links in an email. Also, hover over links to verify the URL before clicking. Does it lead to the company’s real domain? If not, it can be a scam. Finally, use email spam filters and security software to detect phishing attempts.
Fake Booking Websites Created by AI
One widespread AI-enabled scam in the travel industry is the creation of fake booking websites for hotels, car rentals, flights, and travel packages. By leveraging AI, con artists can quickly build and launch these sites with realistic images, reviews, and pricing designed to lure travelers into making bookings. These websites look so professional and convincing that many travelers believe they’re legitimate. And once payment is made, the scammer disappears with the money, leaving the traveler without a reservation or any way to contact customer service.
To avoid falling victim to a fake booking website, first ensure that you always book directly through well-known official websites or trusted travel platforms. Also, double-check the website URL for minor misspellings or unusual domain names. For example, a fake website might end in
.net instead of .com. Also, look for secure connections (https://) and trust seals, but be aware these can sometimes be faked.
As an added precaution, search for reviews or complaints about the website on independent forums or consumer review sites.
AI-Generated WhatsApp or SMS “Urgent Alerts”
Travelers are also being targeted via AIgenerated text messages sent through WhatsApp, SMS, or other messaging platforms. These messages appear to be urgent airline or travel updates, such as flight delays, cancellations, or gate changes. Scammers use these fake alerts to trick travelers into clicking on malicious links that can lead to phishing sites or malware downloads. And because these alerts create a sense of urgency, travelers may act without thinking, which puts their sensitive information or devices at risk.
To prevent this scam, first look out for unexpected messages from unknown numbers or contacts. Also, check to see if the messages contain spelling mistakes or awkward phrasing. It is also a scam if a link in the message does not lead to the official airline or travel company’s site. Avoid clicking on any links in messages unless you are certain of the sender’s authenticity. Make sure to also verify any urgent travel information directly on the airline’s official app or website. Finally, enable message filtering on your phone to block spam or suspicious messages.
What Red Flags Should Consumers Watch For?
Spotting scams early can save you a lot of trouble. As stated above, one key warning sign to be alert for is grammatical errors or awkward phrasing in a message. Even if the email or message looks polished, small mistakes can indicate a scam. It is also a scam if you are faced with unusual payment requests. For example, are you asked to pay via gift cards, direct bank transfers, or cryptocurrency? Legitimate companies won’t ask for payment via these methods. Another big red flag is an inability to verify a booking on the official airline or hotel website after providing confirmation details.
Other red flags are chatbots asking for private info too soon. Real companies typically avoid requesting sensitive information through automated chat systems and will connect you to a human agent if
needed. Finally, assess whether an email or message is using pressure tactics and urgent language, because Scammers often create a false sense of urgency to rush victims into making mistakes.
What Should You Do If You’re Fooled by an AI Travel Scam?
The first thing to do is immediately contact your bank to freeze and/or dispute the transactions. It is also important to report the scam to your local consumer protection agency and the FTC (in the U.S.). Filing a report will help protect other travelers, support investigations, and prevent con artists from targeting more victims. Also, make sure to change your passwords if you were tricked into sharing your login credentials for your bank account, email account, etc. I also recommend contacting the real airline/hotel you wanted to book with to alert them of the scam that is taking place and to confirm your actual booking status. After taking these steps, continue to monitor your financial and travel accounts for any unusual activity.
Final Thoughts
AI technology is a powerful tool that con artists are exploiting in increasingly clever ways to scam travelers. Being aware of common AI scams and practicing preventative habits when booking and communicating can greatly reduce your risk. Always verify information through official channels, protect your personal data, and stay skeptical of unsolicited requests for sensitive information. By staying informed and vigilant, you can help ensure your travel plans go smoothly and avoid falling prey to the growing threat of AI-enabled travel scams.

(BFA) Mural Mentorship Program is empowering local emerging artists by offering paid opportunities to work sideby-side with established professional muralists. Through these partnerships, aspiring artists develop both their personal and professional skills while contributing to large-scale public artworks. The resulting murals transform ordinary, empty public spaces into vibrant, inspiring environments — sparking conversation and leaving a lasting impact on the community.
BFA and Broward Health recently celebrated the completion of the vibrant, iconic mural at Broward Health Medical Center that was conceptualized and implemented through the Mural Mentorship Program. Part of the “BFA Art Walls: Let’s Make Broward Beautiful” initiative, the mural at Broward Health Medical Center was the first project in BFA’s mural mentorship program. Lead artist Lori Pratico mentored five South Florida artists, Colin Breslin, Patricia Kluwe Derderian, Stephanie Leyden, Sara Marcano and Ashlee Sanford, who helped bring the mural to life.
A key piece of the ongoing beautifi-
downtown medical campus, this mural visually captures the spirit of Broward Health’s mission and vision, as well as the inspiration behind the brand, and showcases the beauty and creativity Fort Lauderdale offers. Sponsors included Cathy & James Donnelly Charitable Fund at the Community Foundation of Broward, Wayne and Lucretia Weiner, Crown Residential and Broward Health. See the Broward Health Mural come to life: https:/ /www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEsWeoB3xA&t=932s.
“Our Mural Mentorship Program was created to enrich the community through art while supporting emerging artists in their growth and development,” said Jarett Levan, Board Chair of BFA. “Public murals bring joy to the local community, inspire conversation and enhance neighborhoods.”
The newest canvas for the Mural Mentorship Program is the highly visible western facing wall of the Florida Purchasing Agency building at 262 Commercial Blvd. which serves as the western gateway to Lauderdale-by-theSea. Generously funded by Wayne and Lucretia Wiener, Florida Purchasing
at the Community Foundation of Broward, the mural is aptly named “Greetings from Lauderdale-by-the-Sea.”
Sponsorship opportunities for the mural are available for $1,000. Sponsors will be invited to help paint the mural during the community paint day. All proceeds will benefit the Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance on behalf of Team Crizzy. Eric and Caroline Maugee, owners of the Florida Purchasing Agency, have twins—Christian and Isabel—who are affected by this rare, progressive genetic muscular disorder.
Throughout the Mural Mentorship projects, mentees work closely with Pratico during brainstorming sessions and in the design development and execution of the mural. This hands-on experience not only allows the mentees to contribute to a meaningful public art piece which reflects the community’s unique character and spirit, but it also fosters personal growth and professional development in the field of muralism.
The mentee artists chosen to work on the “Greetings from Lauderdale-by-theSea” mural are Angel Alvarez, Alyssa Book, Zoraye Cyrus, Anthony Hinds Jr.
“By providing access, visibility and opportunity, we’re not just supporting individual creators,” said BFA Executive Director Robyn Vegas. “We’re thrilled to be fueling a vibrant, inclusive creative ecosystem that uplifts communities, inspires new generations and reshapes the future of the arts.”
Sponsors are essential in bringing public art to life, helping to revitalize shared spaces and supporting local artists. To learn more about all sponsorship opportunities and how to be part of the next mural, please contact Robyn Vegas at: (954) 940-4933 Or: rvegas@bfabroward .org.

Theft Of A Nation
How The Deep State Swamp Is Stealing The People’s Power
John & Nisha Whitehead
What on earth is happening to this country?
How, over the course of 250 years, did we go from prizing self-government to allowing a corrupt, self-serving ruling elite to dominate us with terror campaigns, brute force, and psychological warfare?
Don’t be fooled: the madness, mayhem and malice unfolding in America is not politics as usual. It’s not a partisan hardball. It’s not bureaucratic overreach.
It’s theft in the gravest sense imaginable: the theft of our nation, the theft of our sovereignty as citizens, the theft of our constitutional republic.
The government is seizing what does not belong to it: our voice, our rights, our power to choose and to resist. It is robbing us of the very tools of selfgovernment—accountability, transparency, representation, free speech, bodily autonomy—and replacing them with coercion, propaganda, and force.
So when the White House threatens to withhold FEMA aid from states that won’t endorse its foreign policy? That’s theft.
When the president attacks the courts for calling out executive overreach? That’s theft.
When the media is muzzled, the police state expands, and new concentration camps rise? All of it—theft.
We are being robbed blind in broad daylight by the very individuals entrusted with safeguarding our rights and our republic.
Despite his assurances to the contrary, Donald Trump never had any intention of draining the swamp. He is the swamp.
Yet make no mistake: this didn’t start with Trump. The groundwork for this theft was laid long before—through successive administrations, both Republican and Democrat—that expanded executive power, hollowed out the Constitution, and normalized the rule of force over the rule of law.
What Trump has done is remove the mask, weaponize the tools of tyranny, and accelerate the dismantling of the republic in full view of the people.
Here are just a few of the many ways the Trump administration—no different than its predecessors in motive, yet far more brazen in execution—is stealing the birthright of the American people and cementing the transformation of the republic into a government of wolves.
• Police, once tasked with serving the people, now act as an occupying force.
• ICE agents, incentivized by massive $50,000 bonuses and shielded from accountability, behave more like mercenaries than law enforcement—operating far outside the bounds of due process.
• Fourth Amendment protections, under constant assault, have become optional.
• Elected representatives enrich themselves through insider trading, while the crises they help manufacture devastate the populace.
• Federal courts are being threatened or ignored outright when they attempt to check executive overreach. Judges who speak out are branded enemies of the state.
• Whistleblowers, journalists, and truthtellers are prosecuted, surveilled, or silenced—treated as threats to national security. Journalism, once protected as a check on power, is under siege.
• Statisticians, public health experts, and government researchers are being purged or silenced when their data doesn’t support the administration’s narrative. We are living in the shadow of George Orwell’s Ministry of Truth, where facts are negotiable, history can be rewritten, and reality is whatever the Deep State says it is.
• Disaster relief, foreign policy, and executive authority have been weaponized to punish dissent.
• The Department of Justice has become a tool of loyalty enforcement—targeting dissenters while shielding cronies.
• Meanwhile, the Epstein files remain sealed. Despite public outcry and compelling evidence of elite involvement in Jeffrey Epstein’s sex trafficking network, the Trump administration has refused to
release the full client list or investigative records. In doing so, it continues the bipartisan pattern of shielding the powerful from scrutiny while everyday Americans face ever-expanding surveillance, suspicion, and punishment.
• Public lands are being auctioned off to corporate allies without oversight or accountability.
• Citizenship is no longer a birthright but a privilege granted or revoked by political fiat.
• Digital platforms, pressured by federal agencies, now censor views deemed “inconvenient” to the state.
• Education is being reshaped to discourage critical thought and enforce ideological conformity.
• Government services, once created to serve the public good, are now political weapons—used to reward loyalty, punish dissent, and control the masses through selective aid and ideological enforcement.
• Executive orders have become tools of rule-by-decree, bypassing Congress and obliterating checks and balances.
• Economic chaos is being weaponized strategically. By manufacturing crises, withholding aid, and destabilizing budgets, the Deep State has found a new way to consolidate power, transfer wealth upwards, and condition compliance.
• Corruption is not punished. It’s rewarded—so long as it serves the power elite.
And while all of this is happening, the
Trump administration is doing everything it can to keep the citizenry distracted, divided, and demobilized—peddling outrage, manufacturing crises, stoking culture wars and threatening global wars.
Bit by bit, freedom is being caged. And what is emerging in its place is a vast, inescapable prison—walled in not by bars, but by bureaucracy, deception, and brute force.
When “we the people” no longer have a say in how we’re governed - when we have no way to guard against our trust
being abused and our rights violatedwhen we have no way to counter government efforts to silence our voices, manipulate our choices, and erase our rights—what remains is not a constitutional republic.
Yet the government—present and past—is stealing more than just power. It’s stealing the people’s ability to be the government.
This is not just about the loss of freedom. It is the systematic dismantling of self-government—of the people’s role as the final check on power.
This is the theft of a nation in real time by those entrusted with the highest offices of power, who use their power to strip “we the people” of our sovereignty and our rights.
The founders warned us against kings. What we face now is far more insidious: an executive branch that pays lip service to freedom while locking down the nation.
This is not how free people are governed.
This is how free people are ruled.
If the people are no longer allowed to check power, to criticize it, to reform it, to influence it, or even to see it—then we no longer have a government of the people, by the people, or for the people.
As I make clear in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, we have a government against the people.
The answer, as the Founders understood, is that there is power in our numbers if only we would stand united against tyranny.

Memorial Regional Hospital Earns Vascular Verification From American College of Surgeons
Memorial Regional Hospital, the flagship of the Hollywood-based Memorial Healthcare System, has earned admission into the Vascular Surgery Verification Program administered by the American College of Surgeons (ACS). The verification means the hospital meets or exceeds criteria established to ensure vascular surgical and interventional inpatients receive optimal care and treatment.
Only seven other facilities in the United States have met ACS requirements for vascular verification, with Memorial being the only one in Florida and the southeast U.S. The next closest facilities to earn the distinction are in New York and Texas, each approximately 1,300 miles away.
“Our vascular surgery program’s verification by the American College of Surgeons and the Society for Vascular Surgery recognizes our commitment to delivering the highest standards of evidence-based, patient-centered vascular care and continuous quality improvement,” said Memorial Division of Vascular Surgery Chief Dr. Eduardo

help you nurture a love for reading right at home.
Create a Cozy Reading Space
Environment matters. Kids are naturally drawn to spaces that feel special, inviting, and just for them. So one simple yet powerful way to encourage more reading at home is to set up a designated reading nook. This could be a small corner of their bedroom, a cozy spot in the living room, or even a tent made from blankets and pillows.
Add a small bookshelf or crate with age-appropriate books, soft lighting like a reading lamp or fairy lights, and a comfy chair or bean bag. Involving your child in designing the space gives them a sense of ownership and pride. When reading feels like a treat instead of a task, children are more likely to reach for a book on their own.
Make Reading Part of the Daily Routine
Consistency is key when building habits. Just like brushing teeth or getting dressed, reading should become part of the daily schedule. Set aside a specific time each day for reading, whether it’s a quiet 15 minutes before bedtime, after breakfast, or during a mid-afternoon break. You can vary the format: sometimes read aloud to your child, sometimes listen to audiobooks together, and at other times encourage your child to read independently or to you.
Even young children who aren’t yet fluent readers benefit greatly from hearing books read aloud and seeing adults model positive reading behaviors.

Memorial’s vascular program features five board-certified and fellowship-trained surgeons, four advanced practice provid ers, 24/7 surgical coverage, and an IACaccredited non-invasive laboratory that supports both neurointerventionalists and interventional radiologists.
The ACS Vascular Surgery Verification Program evaluates facilities by a variety of standards, including institutional commitment, program scope and governance, resources, equipment, services, personnel, clinical care, data abstraction and analysis, and quality improvement. Its verification provides an evidence-driven, standardized pathway for vascular programs to establish and grow their quality improvement and clinical care infrastructure. As a vascular verified hospital, Memorial Regional also becomes an ACS Surgical Quality Partner, signifying the
hospital’s dedication to consistently improving procedures, approaches, and processes.

Its achievements have significantly influenced the course of scientific surgery in America and have established it as an important advocate for all surgical patients. The College has more than 88,000 members and is the largest organization of surgeons in the world.
Incorporate Reading Into Everyday Activities
Reading doesn’t have to be limited to storybooks or school assignments. Words are all around us, and everyday moments provide opportunities for literacy growth. Encourage your child to read signs while driving, labels at the grocery store, instructions on a recipe, or even a shopping list. By weaving reading into regular activities, you show your child that reading is practical and valuable. You also build vocabulary and comprehension in a natural and engaging way. This kind of informal reading helps solidify foundational skills while also keeping things fun and low-pressure.
Choose Books That Match Your Child’s Interests
Nothing kills enthusiasm for reading faster than being forced to read something dull or too difficult. Let your child help choose their own books based on what they love. Are they a big fan of dinosaurs, fairy tales, superheroes, or space?
Visit your local library or bookstore together and explore the options. Graphic novels, comic books, joke books, and magazines count too! What matters most is that your child is engaging with words and enjoying the experience.
Interest-based reading builds intrinsic motivation, which is essential for developing long-term reading habits. If your child struggles to choose, ask a librarian or teacher for suggestions that align with their age, reading level, and interests.
Early readers thrive when they experience success, and one of the most effective ways to provide that success is through decodable readers. These carefully crafted books use only the phonics patterns students have already learned, giving them the tools to read independently from the very beginning. Instead of relying on pictures or guessing strategies, kids apply their decoding skills in real time. This builds confidence, reinforces instruction, and helps children see themselves as capable readers. When reading feels achievable, kids are far more likely to enjoy it (and keep coming back for more).
Make Reading Interactive
Reading becomes more memorable and enjoyable when kids can engage with it in a hands-on way. There are many interactive techniques you can use, such as reading a story together and taking turns acting out scenes. Or, use different voices for different characters to bring the story to life. Also pause to ask questions, such as “What do you think will happen next?” or “Why did the character do that?” You can also encourage your child to draw a picture of their favorite part of the story and invite your child to come up with a different ending to a familiar book.
These engaging activities will help boost comprehension and keep your child actively involved in the reading process.
Celebrate Reading Achievements
Positive reinforcement goes a long way in establishing habits. So create a simple reading chart or journal where your child can track the number of books or minutes read each day. Celebrate milestones with small rewards, such as a trip to the library, a new book, or a special reading-themed outing. You can even start a “Reading Star” board at home to recognize your child’s efforts.
Celebrate not only the quantity of reading, but also things like trying a new genre, finishing a challenging book, or reading aloud to a sibling. When reading is associated with praise and accomplishment, children are more likely to stick with it.
Model the Joy of Reading
One of the most powerful ways to encourage reading is to let your child see you reading too. Children are great imitators, and when they observe adults
enjoying books, newspapers, or magazines, they learn that reading is a normal and pleasurable part of everyday life. You can even talk to your child about what you’re reading, share interesting passages, or set aside “family reading time” where everyone reads their own book quietly together. This models reading as both a skill and a lifelong pleasure. You can also include extended family members in this habit. Grandparents can video chat for a weekly read-aloud session, or older cousins can recommend favorite books. These connections build a social component around reading, reinforcing it as a shared and valued activity.
Final Thoughts
By starting the school year with a focus on fun, meaningful reading habits at home, you’re giving your child a gift that extends far beyond the classroom. These eight strategies are more than just tips, as they’re stepping stones toward a lifetime of curiosity, confidence, and connection through books. With a little consistency, creativity, and encouragement, you can turn reading into one of the most joyful parts of your child’s daily routine. Start small, stay positive, and watch your child’s love for reading take root and grow.

Florida Families Score Big with Month Long Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday
As Florida families gear up for another academic year, there’s one more reason to celebrate this month — a full month of tax-free savings. Governor Ron DeSantis has officially announced the return of Florida’s Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday, a state-wide initiative that eliminates sales tax on essential school supplies, clothing, and technology for the entire month of August.
Running from Friday, August 1 through Sunday, August 31, the sales tax holiday provides significant financial relief to parents, students, and teachers alike as they prepare for the upcoming school year. “Proud to deliver additional sales tax holidays, including the Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday that begins on August 1,” Governor DeSantis said in a public statement. “By cutting taxes, empowering parents, and growing our economy, we’re making it easier for people to live, work, and thrive in the Free State of Florida.”
This annual event has been a popular feature of Florida’s tax policy for years, but in 2025, it’s been expanded to a month-long window, offering families more flexibility, less stress, and meaningful savings during what can often be a financially challenging time of year.
A Statewide Investment in Families
The announcement comes on the heels of Governor DeSantis signing the Fiscal Year 2025–26 budget, a sweeping financial plan that includes $2 billion in tax relief, the permanent repeal of the Business Rent Tax, and targeted sales tax holidays aimed at reducing everyday expenses for Florida residents.
Specifically, the back-to-school tax relief is part of a $450 million initiative designed to help working families. In addition to traditional school supplies and clothing, the holiday includes a broad array of items crucial for modern learning — from personal computers and accessories to educational tools like flashcards and interactive learning toys.
This kind of tax holiday can go a long way in alleviating the strain on household budgets, especially in a time of rising costs nationwide. According to recent surveys, the average American family spends upwards of $890 on back-to-school shopping per child — a figure that has steadily increased year over year. For Floridians, this holiday could mean hundreds of dollars in direct savings, depending on what’s on their back-to-school shopping list.

You have just completed a major work project before the deadline. Having worked diligently and spending your own time, you’re proud of the results and can’t wait to impress your boss. You showed him the project and he immediately begins to criticize it and you. The criticism is completely unwarranted. What do you say to yourself? “I’ve failed again” or “He must be having a bad day, I know I did an excellent job”?
You’ve thought of an innovative idea for a business that you really believe in. Excitedly, you tell your spouse who finds only faults with your idea. He tells you it’ll never work. Seeking another opinion, you confide in one of your closest friends. She has nothing positive to say either. What do you say to yourself? “Why can’t I ever come up with good ideas” or “I know my concept is good, I’m going to go with it”?
You’re a volunteer at a civic organization. You make a suggestion for a fundraiser and the president of the organization tells you it’s a bad idea that won’t work. What do you say to yourself? “It’s no problem if they don’t like my ideas, I’ll still help anyway I can” or “If they don’t like my suggestion, they can do it themselves”?

There’s a job opening where you work. The position is something that you always wanted to do. It’s a great opportunity and would be a promotion. You’re not sure if you have enough experience. Economic Impact & Community Reaction
The Florida Retail Federation has applauded the move, calling the monthlong holiday a “win-win for consumers and businesses alike.” Not only does it ease the financial burden on families, but it also encourages local shopping and supports small businesses.
Retailers across the state are preparing for the influx, rolling out additional discounts and promotions to coincide with the tax-free period. Many stores plan to extend their hours and increase staffing to accommodate demand.
For families like the Moraleses of Jacksonville, the holiday is more than a budget boost — it’s a way to stay proactive. “With three kids in school and each needing their own tech, supplies, and clothes, the tax savings really add up,” says Maria Morales. “We usually wait until the last minute, but having all of August makes it less overwhelming.”
Teachers are also expressing gratitude. As out-of-pocket classroom expenses have become a growing concern, many educators take advantage of the sales tax holiday to stock up on supplies. “We end up buying a lot of materials ourselves,” says third-grade teacher Kelsey Franklin of Tallahassee. “It’s nice to know the state recognizes that and is doing something to help.”
DeSantis’ Broader Tax Vision
Governor DeSantis’ economic policies have centered on low taxes, parental empowerment, and small government. Under his leadership, Florida has maintained **a AAA credit rating**, a **low unemployment rate**, and **one of the lowest per-capita tax burdens** in the country.
In a time when national debates around inflation and affordability dominate headlines, Florida’s aggressive tax-relief strategy is being closely watched by other
states. DeSantis has consistently framed these moves as essential to Florida’s status as a beacon of economic freedom and opportunity.
“Families shouldn’t have to choose between quality education and financial security,” the Governor stated. “This tax holiday reflects our commitment to both — providing relief where it matters most.”
Tips for Maximizing Your Savings
To make the most of the Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday, here are a few practical strategies:
1. Plan Ahead: Make a list of everything your family needs — from notebooks to new shoes — and cross-reference it with the state’s qualifying items list.
2. Shop Early (or Late): Avoid the weekend rush by shopping early in the month or on weekday mornings.
3. Take Advantage of Tech Savings: With up to $1,500 in tax-free eligibility, this is a great time to upgrade laptops or tablets.
4. Stack Deals: Combine the sales tax holiday with store promotions, coupons, and loyalty rewards for maximum benefit.
5. Know the Limits: Remember that not every item qualifies. Check prices carefully to ensure each item is under the qualifying threshold.
A Win for the Wallet — and the Classroom Back-to-school season can be a stressful time for families, but Florida’s 2025 tax holiday is bringing relief, confidence, and a renewed sense of readiness. By giving Floridians a full month to shop tax-free, the DeSantis administration is making it easier than ever to prepare for the year ahead without breaking the bank. From basic pencils to personal computers, Florida is investing in the tools of education — one receipt at a time.

Fail Your Way To Success

Fear of failure is one of the biggest fears people have. Ironically, failure is an integral component of the success process. There are two distinctly different types of failure. Absolute failure is when you give up. Successful failure is when you get back up.
Of course, not everything you attempt works out as planned. When striving for a goal, you will likely discover many ways which don’t work as anticipated. Successful people throughout history have experienced this phenomenon.
It took Thomas Edison 10,000 tries before he finally discovered a workable formula for a commercially viable lightbulb. When asked how it felt to fail so many times, Edison explained that he hadn’t failed at all. Instead, he had discovered 9,999 ways a light bulb wouldn’t work.
Henry Ford went bankrupt twice before his third attempt at a successful automobile manufacturing company finally took hold. R.H. Macy went bankrupt three
times before he came up with a successful business model. Dr. Seuss was rejected by 23 publishers before the 24th publisher sold millions of his books.
Most job seekers go through this process before landing a position they want. They fail their way to success by sending out hundreds of resumes. Their goal is to get one or more interviews which ultimately lead to at least one job offer. Then, if the job doesn’t meet their expectations, they have to start the process over again.
You learned to walk by failing your way to success. Each time you fell down, you struggled to get back up. Each iteration of this process taught you muscle control and balance. You ultimately learned to walk because you refused to give up.
There are countless other examples of people who have failed their way to success. Yet, there are also even more people who have failed and then given up. It’s up to you whether you will experience successful failure, or absolute failure.
Here are some strategies to use in order to fail your way to success. First,
accept failure as a necessary ingredient for success. Each failure gets you one step closer to your objective. Failure is a learning opportunity which shows what requires adjustment.
After each failure, determine what went wrong and look for ways to make improvements. Success requires continuous learning. Seek to constantly add to your skills and knowledge. Study successful people to determine what they have done right. Learn from unsuccessful people what not to do.
Taking action is crucial for producing results. Always be in motion working towards your objective. Keep trying new approaches until you find a working formula. Get up right away each time you stumble or fall.
Leave your comfort zone. You’ve got to try things you have not done before. When what you are doing is not working, you must make positive changes. This requires venturing into the unknown.
Failure is likely if you take steps which are too big. Big steps are difficult to man-
age and complete. Big steps should be broken down into a number of smaller, more manageable steps. For example, opening a large restaurant from scratch is fraught with challenges. If you have little or no experience, your chances of failure increase. Instead, start with a small sandwich shop. As you gain success and experience, you could expand your business. By taking smaller, more manageable steps, failures are more readily recoverable. Don’t fear failure. Embrace successful failure as essential for goal attainment. Use each failure as the invaluable learning tool it is. The way you fail yourself to success is by getting right up whenever you fall down.

Mount Dora Tops List of FL’s Chic-but-Cheap Summer Escapes
Not every family can swing a summer getaway to The Hamptons, Sedona, or Palm Beach - destinations known for their luxury, exclusivity, and sky-high price tags. On the flip side, budget-friendly options like Myrtle Beach or Daytona Beach might offer affordability, but they often come with downsides: overcrowded boardwalks, party scenes, or aging motels.
But there’s a sweet spot in betweenU.S. vacation destinations that feel luxu rious without breaking the bank. Think mountain towns with hot springs, charm ing lakefronts, or spa-like settings at a fraction of the cost.
MarketBeat, a financial media com pany, carried out a survey of 3,011 travel professionals to rank the top “bougie-ona-budget” destinations - places where families can enjoy upscale experiences on a down-to-earth budget.
The top 10 were as follows:
1. Twin Lakes, Colorado
Just below Independence Pass, Twin Lakes offers one of the most scenic (and still affordable) summer escapes in the Rockies. Kayak between mountain peaks, hike to a ghost town, and stay in a historic lodge where the biggest luxury is the view.
2. Kaunakakai, Hawaii
No mega-resorts, no cruise crowdsjust peaceful beaches, mom-and-pop eateries, and cottages with million-dollar views. Kaunakakai offers the strippeddown, soulful Hawaii experience, with just enough polish to feel special.
3. Cold Spring, New York
Just an hour from NYC, this Hudson River village is full of antique shops, art galleries, and stylish cafés – all nestled between leafy mountains and the water’s edge. Hike Breakneck Ridge, then reward yourself with rosé on a patio.
4. Mount Dora, Florida
Set on a chain of lakes in Central Florida, Mount Dora serves up small-town charm with upscale flourishes: antique shops, waterfront wine bars, and sunset cruises. It’s the perfect antidote to beach traffic and summer crowds.
5. Cape May Point, New Jersey
Skip the bustle of Cape May proper and head a mile west to the Point. It’s quieter, wilder, and full of dunes, shorebirds, and Victorian rentals tucked into quiet streets. Ride bikes, read on the porch, and enjoy the beach without the boardwalk noise.
6. Saranac Lake, New York
Just west of Lake Placid, Saranac offers Adirondack charm without Olympic crowds or prices. Rent a canoe, swim off the dock, and stay in a rustic-luxe cabin with a screened porch and a fireplace for cool summer nights. It’s pure lake-life calm.
7. Grand Rivers, Kentucky Tucked between two massive lakes (Lake Barkley and Lake Kentucky), this boating town has the relaxed elegance of a coastal getaway. Rent a lakeside cottage, dine at the lodge, and catch a show at the local playhouse. It’s quiet, waterloving, and wonderfully

Kentucky
slow-paced.
8.
(and
Lake), Tennessee Yes, Tennessee has a Paris – and it comes with its own Eiffel Tower replica. But the real draw is nearby Kentucky Lake, where you can rent a stylish cabin, sip something cold by the water, and enjoy a calm, upscale-feeling summer escape that still flies under the radar.
9. Dauphin Island, Alabama While Gulf Shores and Orange Beach soak up the spotlight, Dauphin Island quietly does coastal charm its way. It’s less about crowds and more about barefoot walks, bird sanctuaries, and beachfront cottages that still come at off-the-radar
prices. There’s a salty elegance to it – not flashy, just effortless.
10. Los Alamos, California Tiny, sunny, and full of surprises, this one-road town in Santa Barbara wine country feels like Napa’s bohemian cousin. Summer weekends mean wine tastings, cowboy-style barbecue, and antique shopping – with boutique inns that haven’t caught on price-wise. Yet. One more Florida location featured in the list: 11. Apalachicola
This oyster town on the Forgotten Coast blends historic charm with breezy summer elegance. Boutique inns, working waterfronts, and craft cocktail bars set in 1800s buildings give it a grown-up beach vibe, far from the party scene.
