Breeze Into Summer With BCT – Just Try It! See More. Spend Less. Let Us Be Your Tour Guide! By Jose Paz
There’s a special kind of energy in Broward when summer rolls around. Maybe it’s the golden sunsets over the coast, the sound of flip-flops hitting the pavement, or just the way the air feels lighter when school’s out and the days stretch longer. Whatever it is, it’s the perfect time to grab your friends, your sunscreen, and surprise your BCT pass! This summer, a group of five friends made a simple decision that changed the way they explored their county: they tried the bus. At first, it was about saving money. With gas prices high and rideshares adding up, they looked for a better way to get around. What they didn’t expect was that Broward County Transit
would become part of the adventure. With just $2 for a one-way fare or affordable all-day passes, hopping on board gave them the freedom to roam without worrying about parking, traffic, or draining their wallets. One morning, they caught Route 11 headed east and rode it all the way to Fort Lauderdale Beach. Windows down, music in their ears, and laughter in the air, they were tourists in their own city. They grabbed iced coffees along Las Olas, laid out their towels under a shady palm, and watched the waves roll in. Later, they checked the real-time app, found the next bus, and decided to ride up to the Galleria Mall for an impromptu shopping stop. It wasn’t just a ride; it was an experience. The buses were clean and air-conditioned, the
drivers welcoming, and the schedule surprisingly easy to navigate. By the end of the week, the group had a new routine. Sunrise at the beach. Midday markets. Sunset photo ops. And BCT was with them every step of the way. So, if you’ve never tried riding with BCT before, consider this your invitation: Just Try It. Let us show you that public transit isn’t just about getting from Point A to Point B; it’s about discovering what’s in between. Let this be the summer you explore more and spend less. Ride BCT!

A Transformative Contribution Holy Cross Health Receives $5 Million Planned Gift to Heart & Vascular Care Holy Cross Health has been blessed to receive one of the single largest planned gifts in its 70-year history, a transformative contribution that will benefit the hospital and patients now and in the future. Philanthropists and grateful patients, Charles “Chuck” and Jacqueline “Jackie” Frasier, have named Holy Cross Health in their estate plans, committing nearly $5 million to heart and vascular care. “Chuck and Jackie chose to include Holy Cross Health in their estate plan as a way to honor the exceptional high-quality care they experienced at the hospital,” said Laura Denoux, Vice President and Chief Development Officer at Holy Cross Health. “The Frasiers’ extraordinary planned gift reflects their belief in the mission of Holy Cross Health and a heartfelt desire to make a meaningful, lasting impact. Inspired by the compassionate care they received from their clinical teams, their generosity will help shape the future of our health system and extend healing to patients and families for generations to come.” The Fort Lauderdale, Florida couple is known for their dedication as philanthropists and community leaders with a passion for education, innovation and service. Chuck, a proud Michigan State University alumnus and retired packaging industry entrepreneur, built a successful 50-year career founding and leading companies focused on engineering and logistics. Together with Jackie, they have championed causes that reflect their shared commitment to excellence, sustainability and giving back by supporting initiatives that create lasting impact in their local community and beyond. Earlier this year, the couple also demonstrated their commitment with a generous $250,000 multi-year pledge further strengthening heart and vascular care at Holy Cross. “Holy Cross Health is a special place with special people where we have always felt cared for and supported,” Chuck said. “Dr. Llanos, Dr. Anand and the entire cardiovascular team saved my life. My wife and I are forever grateful and knew
Grateful patients Chuck and Jackie Frasier include Holy Cross Health in estate plans. During their visits, they were inspired by the names of other generous donors displayed throughout the hospital. Now, their own names will join those donors who once inspired them with recognition on the main Philanthropy Gallery donor wall, as well as on the third floor of the Jim Moran Heart and Vascular Center. “We’re very grateful to the Frasier family for this transformative gift to support the heart center of the future,” Holy Cross Health Interventional Cardiologist Alexander Llanos, M.D. and
Cardiac Electrophysiologist Rishi Anand, M.D. said in a joint statement. Shopping for private student loans may sound overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be.
Are You Ready To Pay For Fall Tuition? How To Shop For Student Loans (BPT) - Parents, important tuition deadlines are quickly approaching! Are you and your college student prepared to make your first tuition payment? If you have a financial gap, now is the time to make money moves and secure funds to pay for your student’s higher education.
How parents are paying for college While parents aren’t required to help pay for their child’s college education, many do. According to College Ave’s 2025 Parent Survey, nearly all parents (94%) currently help or plan to help their children pay for college. However, among all parents surveyed, 77% reported that paying for college is stressful and 71% were surprised by the high cost. There are many financial sources parents use to pay for their children’s college tuition. The parent survey found that the top three ways parents help or plan to help pay for college are through regular
income and savings (67%), grants and scholarships (64%), and 529 college savings accounts (45%). But what do you do when these sources aren’t enough to cover the full cost of college? Like many families, you may opt to use student loans to cover the gap. Read on to learn how to shop smart for student loans and make your child’s education a reality. What are my loan options? One of the fastest and simplest ways to immediately cover a financing gap is through student loans. Not sure how much you’ll need to borrow? No problem. You can use a handy online Student Loan Calculator, like the one from College Ave, to better understand the total cost of the loan and estimate your monthly payments. Next, make sure your student finishes filling out their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Not only does this
form help the government and schools determine the types of financial aid your student is eligible to receive, but it also provides your family with access to federal student loans. According to College Ave’s survey, 41% of parents reported using or planning to use federal student loans to help pay for college. Federal student loans in the student’s name should be your first option before exploring other forms of college financing. By taking out a federal student loan, your child will have access to unique benefits like income-based repayment plans that aren’t typically available through private loans. If you don’t have enough to cover tuition and college fees after exhausting these options, you can still pay for fall tuition by exploring private student loans. How to shop for private student loans Shopping for private student loans may
sound overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. College Ave offers parents and students a customer-friendly, stress-free student loan experience. Thanks to its simple three-minute application process, College Ave can help you breathe a little easier as you help fund your child’s educational journey. Plus, with competitive rates and a variety of loan repayment options, you’ll find the right private student loan that fits your budget. While you’re there, you can also find more useful information on how to navigate the road to college. Make the most of your time together This summer, don’t get bogged down with financial decisions. Make sure to secure federal student loans and shop for private student loans early on so you can enjoy a bit of summer with your child and celebrate this next phase of their life. 5 Unique Nutritional Needs Of Tiny But Mighty Pups (BPT) - National Small Dog Day is fast approaching, a day dedicated to the small dogs of the pack. These pups may come in a small package (generally weighing 20 pounds or less), but they have big personalities and can make a huge impact on the lives of their owners. “Despite their stature, small dogs are anything but pint-sized when it comes to their energy, personalities and distinct traits,” said Purina veterinarian, Dr. RuthAnn Lobos. “They tend to live longer than larger dogs and love activity, play and adventure just as much as any other dog. However, they have a unique set of needs, and it’s important for pet owners to recognize and support these through proper nutrition.” Curious about how to support your compact canine companion’s nutrition? Check out these expert tips that can help you properly support your tiny dog’s mighty needs.
1. Nutrient-dense food According to the Independent & Neighborhood Pet Retail Association, because their organs process food more quickly than those of larger dogs, smaller dogs need more calories per pound and food with high-quality ingredients. To support your small dog’s fast metabolism throughout their long life, feed them high-quality, calorie- and nutrientdense food while ensuring they keep an ideal body condition. Dog food specially formulated for small dogs can provide all the Protein, antioxidants, and other essential nutrients they need to fuel their play. 2. Food with high antioxidant levels You’ve probably seen many products at your grocery store boasting their antioxidant properties. Well, they’re not just for humans! You can support your petite pup’s Immune System by purchasing dog food that is rich in antioxidants. According to PetMD, there are numerous health benefits provided by antioxidants. These major molecules can protect cells from damage and strengthen the

Protein-rich meals If you regularly hit the gym, you know how important Protein is to support your gains. According to Dr. Lobos, small dogs also need Protein to help them repair, grow and maintain strong muscles. “When searching for dog foods to strengthen your pet, make sure to pick formulations that have essential Amino Acids from key Protein sources to support their activity and growth,” says Dr. Lobos. 4. Smaller kibble Small dogs have small jaws and teeth, which can make it challenging for them to eat large pieces of kibble.
When choosing food for your pups, Dr. Lobos recommends going for dry dog food made with small dogs in mind. The smaller pieces of kibble not only help them chew more easily but also support their digestive and dental health. 5. Wet food If you only feed your small dog dry food, consider adding wet food to their diet. According to Dr. Lobos, even if you’re feeding them high-quality, nutritious kibble, wet food can encourage selective eaters to engage with their bowls. Bonus: Wet food can also help your hound hydrate by adding moisture to their diet! One product made for the tiny but mighty There are many brands of dog food to
choose from, but not all of them address a small dog’s nutritional needs. However, you can rest easy knowing your small pup is getting the specialized nutrition they need when they eat Beneful IncrediBites. The line of wet and dry products is made to support small dogs. It delivers big taste, fuels their larger-than-life personalities and supports their unique nutritional needs. Beneful IncrediBites formulas are nutrient-rich recipes to help support faster metabolisms. They’re also made with real meat, fish or poultry, have accents of natural fruits or vegetables, and are made without artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. There’s Power In Every Action Feeding South Florida Launches Hunger Action Month This September Feeding South Florida – the leading hunger-relief organization serving Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade, and Monroe counties – is commemorating Hunger Action Month this September with various activities to encourage South Floridians to “Go Orange” to stand against hunger. Hunger Action Month, a nationwide initiative created by Feeding America®, takes place throughout September and is designed to raise awareness about the issue of hunger in America and inspire others to take action toward ending it. This year, Feeding South Florida’s theme is “Power in Every Action.” Currently, in South Florida, there are more than 1.2 million food-insecure individuals. One in nine individuals in South Florida remains uncertain about where they will get their next meal due to inflation, the strained supply chain, rising fuel prices, and increased housing costs, among other factors. Proceeds raised during the month-long initiative will allow Feeding South Florida to fulfill its mission to end hunger in South Florida by providing immediate access to nutritious food, leading hunger and poverty advocacy efforts, and transforming lives through innovative programming and education. An online auction during the month will allow bidders access to fun, unique items while supporting Feeding South Florida’s hunger relief efforts. “Hunger Heroes” tshirts will be available for purchase to raise awareness about hunger. Monetary donations will go further during September with a Hunger Action Match, all month long donations will be matched
dollar-for-dollar, up to $25,000. Every donation is critical, as a $1 donation allows Feeding South Florida to provide approximately four meals to a family in need.

The New Gulag: Mental Health Detentions and the Criminalization of Dissent John & Nisha Whitehead
The government’s war on homelessness—much like its war on terrorism, its war on drugs, its war on illegal immigration, and its war on COVID-19—is yet another Trojan Horse. First, President Trump issues an executive order empowering federal agencies to clear out homeless encampments and lock up the homeless in mental institutions using involuntary civil commitment laws intended for dealing with individuals experiencing mental health crises. Days later, a gunman allegedly suffering from a mental illness opens fire in New York City, killing four before turning the gun on himself. Coming on the heels of Trump’s executive order aimed at “ending crime and disorder on America’s streets,” the shooting has all the makings of a modern-day Reichstag fire: a tragedy weaponized to justify allowing the government use mental illness as a pretext for locking more people up without due process. An Orwellian exercise in doublespeak, Trump’s executive order suggests that jailing the homeless, rather than providing them with affordable housing, is the “compassionate” solution to homelessness. According to USA Today, social workers, medical experts and mental health service providers say the president’s approach “will likely worsen homelessness across the country, particularly because Trump’s order contains no new funding for mental health or drug treatment. Additionally, they say the president appears to misunderstand the fundamental driver of homelessness: People can’t afford housing.” And then comes the kicker: Trump wants to see more use of civil commitments (forced detentions) for anyone who is perceived as posing a risk “to themselves or the public or are living on the streets and cannot care for themselves in appropriate facilities for appropriate periods of time.” Translation: the government wants to use homelessness as a pretext for indefinitely locking up anyone who might pose a threat to its chokehold on police state power. When you consider the ramifications of giving the American police state that kind of authority to preemptively neutralize a potential threat, you’ll understand why some might view these looming mental health round-ups with trepidation. By directing police to carry out forced
detentions of individuals based not on criminal behavior but on perceived mental instability or drug use, the Trump administration is attempting to sidestep fundamental constitutional protections—due process, probable cause, and the presumption of innocence—by substituting medical discretion for legal standards.
medication and psychological torture. Totalitarian regimes used such tactics to isolate political dissidents from the rest of society, discredit their ideas, and break them physically and mentally. What’s unfolding in America is the modern police state’s version of that same script.
opposition to war or police brutality as “Oppositional Defiant Disorder” could now be used to classify political dissent as a psychiatric illness. This is not hyperbole. The government’s ability to silence dissent by labeling it as dangerous or diseased is well documented—and now it’s
According to USA Today, social workers, medical experts and mental health service providers say the president’s approach “will likely worsen homelessness across the country, particularly because Trump’s order contains no new funding for mental health or drug treatment.” Taken to its authoritarian limits, this could allow the government to weaponize the label of mental illness as a means of exiling dissidents who refuse to march in lockstep with its dictates. Once the government is allowed to control the narrative over who is deemed mentally unfit, mental health care could become yet another pretext for pathologizing dissent in order to disarm and silence the government’s critics. Take heed: this has the potential to become the next phase of the government’s war on thought crimes, cloaked in the guise of public health and safety. This is not about public safety. It’s about control. We’ve seen this tactic before. When governments seek to suppress dissent without provoking outrage, they turn to psychiatric labels. Throughout history, from Cold War-era Soviet gulags to modern pre-crime initiatives, authoritarian regimes have used psychiatric labels to isolate, discredit, and eliminate dissidents. As historian Anne Applebaum notes, administrative exile, which required no trial and due process, “was an ideal punishment not only for troublemakers as such, but also for political opponents of the regime.” The word “gulag” refers to a labor or concentration camp where prisoners (oftentimes political prisoners or so-called “enemies of the state,” real or imagined) were imprisoned as punishment for their crimes against the state. Soviet dissidents were often declared mentally ill, institutionalized in prisons disguised as psychiatric hospitals, and subjected to forced
Civil commitment laws are found in all states and employed throughout American history. Under the doctrines of parens patriae and police power, the government already claims authority to confine those deemed unable to act in their own best interest or who pose a threat to society. When fused, these doctrines give the state enormous discretion to preemptively lock people up based on speculative future threats, not actual crimes. This discretion is now expanding at warp speed. The result is a Nanny State mindset carried out with the militant force of the Police State. Once dissent is equated with danger— and danger with illness—those who challenge the state become medicalized threats, subject to detention not for what they’ve done, but for what they believe. We’ve already seen what happens when dissent is pathologized and criminalized, and civil commitment laws are weaponized. Now, under the banner of mental health, the same dragnet is being equipped with red flag gun laws, predictive policing, and involuntary detention authority. In theory, these laws are meant to prevent harm. In practice, they punish thought, not conduct. Trump’s latest executive order doesn’t just target the homeless—it establishes a precedent for rounding up anyone deemed a threat to the government’s version of law and order. The same playbook that pathologized
about to be codified into law. While the intention may appear reasonable—disarming people who pose an “immediate danger” to themselves or others—the problem arises when you put the power to determine who is a potential danger in the hands of a police state that equates dissent with extremism. As I make clear in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, we are fast approaching a future where you can be locked up for the thoughts you think, the beliefs you hold, or the questions you ask. The government will use any excuse to suppress dissent and control the narrative. It will start with the homeless. Then the mentally ill. Then the so-called extremists. Then the critics, the contrarians, and the constitutionalists. Eventually, it will come for anyone who dares to get in the government’s way. This is how tyranny rises. This is how freedom falls. Unless we resist this creeping mental health gulag, the prison gates will eventually close on us all. DOGE: Impacts On The City Of Hallandale Beach By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper
Over the past months our Governor has been focused on DOGE. While we can agree that there are instances of spending by all levels of government, including the State, that are questionable. What about the state? Actually, the new “statewide taxpayer funded campaign” by the Governor is an example of questionable spending. These announcements could have very easily been done from Tallahassee. Cities and counties in our state must submit a balanced annual budget and are subject to annual audits and submit a Comprehensive Annual Report CAFR. Hallandale Beach, for example, just received an audit with zero findings. Our entire budget is online and accessible for everyone including the state for review. The state has access; they should use it and not require our staff to do their work. So, what are they asking for? In short, they are asking our staff to create documents in an effort to cover their own DOGE failure attempt. Mayors and Managers at every level of government received a DOGE basic request back in March and responded. After there was radio silence. The recent DOGE campaign was announced through a staged statewide campaign. The recent DOGE correspondence was sent July 11th, with a response deadline of July
21st. When I first received the email, I was extremely perplexed and annoyed for our professional staff. I sent an email to Dr. Earle to share my thoughts. “While I know we will comply with their request it is perplexing as all this information is available in our audit and our Comprehensive Annual Report CAFR.” At the end of the email the state offered government agencies to contact them if they could not make the deadline. This was a full page of questions asking our staff to comply in their own excel spread sheet form. The report asked once again about population, revenues, and the entire budget with expenses of every single department. This was not just for one year but all the way back to 20-21. Our staff, including the Finance, Budget Committee and Information Technology, got to work instantly and worked over the weekend in hopes of not having to ask for an extension. Many cities and counties asked for extensions, some 30 days. On Monday July 21st in an email to Dr. Earle our Finance Director on behalf of the team explained our complex ledger structure does not simply tie into an excel sheet. IT worked on a solution, and they have completed all the tabs but the final one. Rather than rushing and losing value data the team asked for an extension until August 8th.
I am sure this same issue is being addressed by every agency. I cannot imagine what large cities and counties are going through. Many residents may not realize all Florida governments are currently going through their 2024-2025 budgets that must be approved before October 1st. This DOGE mission is taking all our staff away from critical daily duties. As a note, we have a fully accessible state-of-the-art IT system. The main issue is they are asking staff to create a work sheet to fit their needs. Typically, auditors will come in and request access to documentation and our systems, but the auditors do the work. Our staff has requested an extension simply because the time was not possible. The unrealistic request of all the government agencies to comply within 11 days shows a true lack of understanding of the complex financial system or was a deliberate attempt to create a lack of faith in our government. This contrived narrative that all governments have waste and are abusing taxpayer dollars is strictly feeding a political base. The goal is not to cut taxes. They are looking for a “smoking gun” in an attempt to suggest that our property taxes are too high. If you had a chance to read my State of the City. The State of Florida, you already
know that our state is the fourth lowest taxed burden state in the nation. Our state does not have income tax and has an incredibly low sales tax rate of 6%. Our cities depend on property taxes to pay for services that directly impact safety and quality of life of each resident. Our state did nothing to cut insurance costs. They cut many local requests to fund much needed infrastructure. Our Northeast Flood Control request was cut. Now, being faced with costs to cover education, schools, and health insurance, they are teeing up a bait and switching. Cut property taxes but increase sales tax. Great for the state as they collect sales tax and do not rely on property taxes. We as a city rely on property taxes to pay for vital services; Police, Fire, EMS, Water and Wastewater Services, Flood Control, Sanitation Services, Municipal Road Maintenance, Park, and Beach Services. Every citizen needs to understand what services each level of government provides.

extended period away? Just as the City’s water distribution system is flushed annually, flushing household water pipes can be beneficial. Water left stagnant in pipes for weeks or months can dissipate chlorine, potentially allowing bacterial growth and the leaching of contaminants, leading to discoloration, unpleasant odors, or even unhealthy drinking water. For most single-family homes, running
water freely from each tap for several minutes should suffice to clear stagnant water. Larger or more complex structures may require longer flushing times, and hot water lines may need separate attention. Remember to replace any expired filters, such as those on refrigerator water lines.

Annual Water Line Flushing Begins August 25th In Hollywood The City of Hollywood Department of Public Utilities (DPU) will conduct its Annual Water Line Flushing Program from August 25th through September 28th. This essential maintenance removes accumulated sediments from water pipes, a required practice for all U.S. water systems. During flushing, the Water Treatment Plant will temporarily switch from chloramine to free chlorination to aid sediment removal. While this may alter the water’s appearance, taste or odor, it remains safe to drink and is regularly tested. DPU staff will systematically open fire hydrants to flush pipes, typically between 8:00 p.m. and midnight. The flushed sediments may cause temporary cloudiness but are harmless and should settle within hours. While free chlorination ends September 28th, line flushing will continue city-wide for several weeks, expected to conclude by October 9th. Individuals with special water concerns, such as businesses with fish/ shellfish tanks or users of kidney dialysis machines, should note that regular methods for testing and removing free chlorine may not be effective.
