Mother’s Day

How Did This Special Day Come To Be?

The First Official Mother’s Day Celebration Was Held On May 10, 1908

Mother’s Day is a beloved holiday celebrated in many countries around the world to honor and appreciate mothers and mother figures for their unconditional love, care and sacrifices. It is a day to express gratitude and shower mothers with gifts, flowers and acts of kindness. But have you ever wondered about the history of Mother’s Day? How did this special day come to be?

The roots of Mother’s Day can be traced back to ancient civilizations. The Ancient Greeks and Romans held festivals to honor maternal goddesses, such as Rhea and Cybele, who were considered the mother of all gods. These celebrations were marked with feasts, processions and offerings to express gratitude and seek blessings for the wellbeing of mothers and their children.

However, the modern Mother’s Day as we know it today has its origins in the 19th century. In the United States, the concept of a day to honor mothers was introduced by Ann Reeves Jarvis, a social activist and poet, who organized “Mother’s Day Work Clubs” to address issues related to public health and sanitation in the 1850’s. These clubs

The War On Free Speech Is Really A War On The Right To Criticize The Government

Absolutely, there is a war on Free Speech.

To be more accurate, however, the war on Free Speech is really a war on the right to criticize the government.

Although the right to speak out against government wrongdoing is the quintessential freedom, every day in this country, those who dare to speak their truth to the powers-that-be find themselves censored, silenced or fired.

Indeed, those who run the government don’t take kindly to individuals who speak truth to power.

In fact, the government has become increasingly intolerant of speech that challenges its power, reveals its corruption, exposes its lies and encourages the citizenry to push back against the government’s many injustices.

This is nothing new, nor is it unique to any particular presidential administration.

For instance, as part of its campaign to eradicate so-called “disinformation,” the Biden Administration likened those who share “false or misleading narratives and conspiracy theories and other forms of mis-dis-and-mal-information” to terrorists. This government salvo against consumers and spreaders of “mis-dis-and-malinformation” widens the net to potentially include anyone who is exposed to ideas that run counter to the official government narrative.

In his first few years in office, President Trump declared the media to be “the enemy of the people,” suggested that protesting should be illegal and that NFL players who kneel in protest during the National Anthem “shouldn’t be in the country.”

Then again, Trump was not alone in his presidential disregard for the rights of the citizenry, especially as it pertains to the right of the people to criticize those in power.

President Obama signed into Law an Anti-Protest Legislation that makes it easier for the government to criminalize protest activities (10 years in prison for protesting anywhere in the vicinity of a Secret Service agent). The Obama Administration also waged a war on whistleblowers, which The Washington Post described as “the most aggressive I’ve seen since the Nixon Administration” and “spied on reporters by monitoring their phone records.”

Part of the Patriot Act signed into Law by President George W. Bush made it a

provided assistance to mothers and promoted better care for children.

After the Civil War, Ann Reeves Jarvis’s daughter, Anna Jarvis, continued her mother’s work and advocated for a day to recognize the sacrifices of mothers. Anna Jarvis envisioned a day to commemorate the role of mothers in society and promote peace and reconciliation after the war. She wrote letters to politicians, businessmen and influential people to garner support for her cause.

Finally, in 1908, Anna Jarvis succeeded in her efforts and the first official Mother’s Day Celebration was held on May 10th, 1908 at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia. It was a simple ceremony where Anna Jarvis distributed white carnations, her mother’s favorite flower, to honor all the mothers present. The event received widespread recognition and paved the way for the establishment of Mother’s Day as a National Holiday in the United States.

As Mother’s Day gained popularity, it spread to other countries, including Canada, Mexico, Australia and many European and Asian countries. However, the way it is celebrated and the date of celebration varies across different cultures and countries. For example, in the United Kingdom, Mother’s Day, also known as Mothering Sunday, falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent, while in Mexico, it is celebrated on May 10th, the same date as the original celebration initiated by Anna Jarvis.

Over the years, Mother’s Day has become a commercialized holiday, with the sale of flowers, greeting cards, chocolates and gifts reaching new heights. However, the essence of the day remains the same – to honor and appreciate the unconditional love, sacrifices and selflessness of mothers and mother figures in our lives.

Mother’s Day has also been associated with various social and political movements. In the early 20th century, it became a platform for women’s suffrage movements, with women using the occasion to advocate for their right to vote and equal rights. Today, Mother’s Day is often used as an opportunity to raise awareness about women’s issues, maternal health and gender equality.

crime for an American Citizen to engage in peaceful, lawful activity on behalf of any group designated by the government as a terrorist organization. Under this provision, even filing an amicus brief on behalf of an organization the government has labeled as terrorist would constitute breaking the Law.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt authorized the FBI to censor all news and control communications in and out of the country in the wake of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Roosevelt also signed into Law the Smith Act, which made it a crime to advocate by way of speech for the overthrow of the U.S. Government by force or violence.

President Woodrow Wilson signed into Law the Espionage and Sedition Acts, which made it illegal to criticize the government’s war efforts.

President Abraham Lincoln seized telegraph lines, censored mail, newspaper dispatches and shut down members of the press who criticized his Administration.

In 1798, during the Presidency of John Adams, Congress passed the Alien and Sedition Acts, which made it a crime to “write, print, utter or publish … any false, scandalous and malicious” statements against the government, Congress or President of the United States.

Clearly, the government has been undermining our Free Speech Rights for quite a while now.

Good, bad or ugly, it’s all Free Speech unless as defined by the government it falls into one of the following categories: obscenity, fighting words, defamation (including libel and slander), child pornography, perjury, blackmail, incitement to imminent lawless action, true threats and solicitations to commit crimes.

This idea of “dangerous” speech, on the other hand, is peculiarly authoritarian in nature. What it amounts to is speech that the government fears could challenge its chokehold on power.

The kinds of speech the government considers dangerous enough to red flag and subject to censorship, surveillance,

investigation, prosecution and outright elimination include: hate speech, bullying speech, intolerant speech, conspiratorial speech, treasonous speech, threatening speech, incendiary speech, inflammatory speech, radical speech, anti-government speech, right-wing speech, left-wing speech, extremist speech, politically incorrect speech, etc.

What this adds up to is a government that has become highly intolerant of

and a healthy constitutional republic requires—are citizens who routinely exercise their right to speak truth to power.

Tolerance for dissent is vital if we are to survive as a free nation.

While there are all kinds of labels being put on so-called “unacceptable” speech today, the real message being conveyed by those in power is that Americans don’t have a right to express themselves if what they are saying is unpopular, controversial or at odds with what the government determines to be acceptable.

By suppressing Free Speech, the government is contributing to a growing underclass of Americans who are being told that they can’t take part in American public life unless they “fit in.”

Mind you, it won’t be long before anyone who believes in holding the govern ment accountable to respecting our rights

You see, the powers-that-be understand that if the government can control speech, it controls thought and in turn, it can control the minds of the citizenry.

This is how freedom rises or falls.

Americans of all stripes would do well to remember that those who question the motives of government provide a necessary counterpoint to those who would blindly follow where politicians choose to lead.

We don’t have to agree with every criticism of the government, but we must defend the rights of all individuals to speak freely without fear of punishment or threat of banishment.

Never forget: what the architects of the police state want are submissive, compliant, cooperative, obedient, meek citizens who don’t talk back, don’t challenge government authority, don’t speak out against government misconduct and don’t step out of line.

What the First Amendment protects—

and abiding by the rule of law is labeled an “extremist,” is relegated to an underclass that doesn’t fit in, must be watched all the time and is rounded up when the government deems it necessary.

It doesn’t matter how much money you make, what politics you subscribe to, or what God you worship: as I make clear in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, we are all potential suspects, terrorists and lawbreakers in the eyes of the government.

Handwritten Letter

Despite the commercialization and modern-day celebrations, the origin of Mother’s Day reminds us of the humble beginnings of a daughter’s tribute to her mother’s love and sacrifice. Anna Jarvis, who initiated the idea of Mother’s Day, later became disillusioned with the commercialization and tried to reverse the trend. She even filed lawsuits against companies for using the name “Mother’s Day” for commercial purposes. Anna Jarvis passed away in 1948, but her legacy lives on as the Founder of Mother’s Day.

The Museum Of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA)

Commemorates Haitian Heritage Month And Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month

Through the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA)’s continued efforts to include diverse voices and perspectives, the museum is offering a robust series of educational and public programming to commemorate Haitian Heritage Month and Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month this May.

MOCA is pleased to debut two exciting exhibitions opening this spring. “Lonnie Holley: If You Really Knew” invites visitors to experience the work of prolific Artist Lonnie Holley in his first major exhibition in the South. The second showcases the work of 12 intergenerational South Florida artists selected to show their work in the “South Florida Cultural Consortium (SFCC)” Exhibition. Both exhibitions go on view Wednesday, May 10th, 2023 through Sunday, October 1st, 2023.

“Lonnie Holley: If You Really Knew” provides an intimate and focused look at the career of Birmingham, Alabama-born Artist and Musician Lonnie Holley. The exhibition, curated by MOCA Curator Adeze Wilford, will feature 70 works including foundational “sandstone” sculptures, new works on paper and largescale quilt paintings that depict faces. Known for his unique style of art that draws inspiration from his life experiences, Holley often incorporates found objects and everyday materials, which he transforms into thought-provoking art. Holley’s influence on Southern art is highlighted throughout “If You Only Knew,” including a section he curated featuring works from artists such as Miami native Purvis Young, Thornton Dial, Mary T. Smith and Hawkins Bowling.

Also opening this spring is the South Florida Cultural Consortium (SFCC) Exhibition, which brings together 12 artists working across various media including sculpture, film and site-specific installations. The exhibition, this year hosted and organized by MOCA, will provide a snapshot of the breadth and depth of the artistic talent in the South Florida art scene.

On view outside the museum is MOCA’s most recent “Art On The Plaza” Commission, Edison Peñafiel’s installation, “Run, Run, Run Like The Wind.” This colorful display of nine banners hangs from the highest point of the palm trees throughout MOCA’s Plaza, showcasing characters on the run and accompanied by text taken from Latin American protest songs. Peñafiel’s work will highlight the act of escape during political turmoil, speaking to themes of human migration, displacement and social justice. It will be on display until late May 2023.

On view through Sunday, June 25th, 2023, visitors will be able to step into MOCA’s Paradise Courtyard and discover “Victory Garden,” an interactive sculptural community garden created by Miamibased Artist Emmett Moore. Drawing inspiration from Victory Gardens of the past, which were planted during wartime to supplement rations and boost morale, Moore’s “Victory Garden” connects the local community with contemporary art and encourages visitors to reflect on their relationship with the built environment.

The Kiwanis Club of Hallandale Beach Receives a $6,000 Matching Grant From the Florida Kiwanis Foundation

The Florida Kiwanis Foundation has awarded a $6,000 Grant to the Kiwanis Club of Hallandale Beach who will match the Grant with an equal sum.

The Grant money will fund a Mobile Service Center that will be portable at several locations within the City meeting the needs of deserving children and staffed by both The Kiwanis Club and The Police Activity League.

One targeted Beneficiary will be the students enrolled at Gulfstream Academy that require a standard uniform shirt and we intend to ensure that every student will be outfitted regardless of the family’s financial situation.

The Kiwanis Club Of Hallandale Beach and The Police Activity League previously jointly partnered in a highly successful program at Gulfstream Academy named “Imagine It’s You” that stressed the concepts of kindness and empathy denouncing bullying activity.

Initially, The Kiwanis Club Of Hallandale planned on supplying 500 polo shirts to the students at Gulfstream Academy bearing the school’s logo pro-

viding all students with a sense of belonging and raising their self-esteem. This builds on the mantra that one must learn to dress for success.

Jonathan Carrillo, Program Director for The Police Activity League states that “the new mobile booth will serve as a highly visible location to gather knowledge about citywide events and various opportunities and schedules.”

Both organizations plan to cater to questions commonly asked by residents regarding where to seek medical care, insurance and tax preparation as well as city sponsored programs and events.

The successful sustainability of this program will also rely on corporate donations and financial generosity from the residents. We are clearly a Not-For-Profit Organization and all revenues generated from the center will be reinvested for the benefit of the children.

Research has shown that the average teacher must personally spend approximately $550 annually to meet the shortfall in school supplies in the classroom and we aim to assist in relieving a portion of that burden.

The Grant will also help in developing proprietary software that will enable inquiries regarding non commercial social services to be easily attained.

The Hallandale Beach Police Activity League proudly boasts that it has obtained its own building located on Foster Road and the community is invited to participate in a Grand Opening

Celebration on Saturday, May 20th, 2023. In closing, we seek the generosity from our local merchants as all donations made payable to our 501C3 Foundation named The HB Kiwanis Project, INC are Tax Deductible.

Digging Up The Past: Looking Back 2,000 Years In Florida

In recognition of National Hurricane Preparedness Week, which is April 30 to May 6 this year, learn how scientists are looking back thousands of years to gain a better understanding of hurricane patterns and how climate change could impact future storm activity. Knowing what has happened in the past gives insight on potential storm intensity and occurrence in the future.

The U.S. Geological Survey is working with several partners to capture real-world data and identify the frequency and strength of past storms that weren’t previously studied.

One effort led by the USGS looked back 2,000 years at hurricanes in northwest Florida. During that time period, local climate conditions – including sea surface temperatures in portions of the Gulf of Mexico and northern Atlantic Ocean – were similar to today and what is anticipated in the future.

The reasons for warming differ between the two time periods though, as past conditions were due to natural factors such as changes in the sun’s radiation, and more recent warming is primarily due to human activities.

The USGS research suggests that existing records of recent storms may underrepresent how often powerful hurricanes have made landfall in northwest Florida. The research also supports forecasts by organizations such as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association that the number of intense hurricanes could increase in the future in parts of the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean as oceans warm. This science can help improve hurricane forecasts and inform policy makers and managers as they prepare adaptation and mitigation plans to protect people, infrastructure and the environment. Studying the past provides a new baseline context and perspective of storm activity as well as new insight on how the climate and other environmental factors can influence hurricanes.

Powerful Hurricanes That Weren’t

Studied In Florida

Previously

“Most existing records on hurricanes that are used to help forecast storms date back to 1851, which is just over 170 years ago, and our research is looking beyond that by several thousands of years,” said USGS Research Geologist Jessica Rodysill. “We are collecting sediment from below the Earth’s surface and analyzing those samples to learn about hurricane occurrence over a long period.”

The USGS-led study in Florida identified several strong hurricanes, reaching Category 4 or 5 levels, that made landfall

between the years 650 and 1250, 800 to 1,400 years ago. Prior to this research, Hurricane Michael in 2018 was the only storm stronger than Category 3 known to make landfall on the Florida panhandle. It was a Category 5 Hurricane and resulted in the loss of 59 lives and $25 Billion in damages across the southeastern U.S.

“With additional data, the organizations developing climate and hurricane models can build more robust projections on what types of storms could impact northwest Florida and nearby coasts,” said Rodysill. “Since this research focuses on real storms during warm periods, forecast models can be tested and validated to see if they produce scenarios that align with past events.”

Future intense hurricanes in parts of the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean

The enhanced hurricane activity 800 to 1,400 years ago coincided with warmer sea surface temperatures in certain parts of the Gulf of Mexico and northern Atlantic Ocean. Temperatures in those oceans, where hurricanes typically form, are anticipated to warm over the next century to similar levels.

Existing forecasts by NOAA

and other organizations predict that the frequency of powerful hurricanes could increase in those locations, and other places across the globe, due to factors such as warming ocean temperatures. The research by the USGS and partners provides additional evidence to support those hurricane forecasts for portions of the Gulf of Mexico and northern Atlantic Ocean, as scientists found strong hurricanes occurred in those areas when sea surface temperatures were warmer in the past. Future storms, however, will likely depend on a range of other factors such as atmospheric temperatures, the thickness of warm surface water and winds.

The Role of Climate

There are several conditions that support hurricane growth, and some of those can be influenced by the climate. The relationship between the climate and hurricane activity on long timescales is still not very well understood, which makes identifying hurricane trends challenging when taking climate change into account.

In addition to warmer sea surface temperatures, the past hurricane activity in northwest Florida coincided with a thicker layer of warm surface water in

the Gulf of Mexico, known as the loop current. In addition, there were favorable winds that helped fuel and maintain storms, and those winds typically move toward areas with warmer air temperatures. While those and other conditions were already known to contribute to past storms within a hurricane season, studying the past allows for more detailed insight on those processes and influences.

Long-term Records Help Protect Communities

Studying long-term records can help guide decisions on the best ways to protect the nation’s coasts, which have become more vulnerable to storm inundation in recent years following the loss of protective barriers such as dunes and marshes following flooding from rising sea levels. There is also increased risk to people, infrastructure and the economy due to growing populations and development along shorelines.

Scientists Dig in Lakes

In this research, sediment samples were collected from two locations in coastal Florida; in Basin Bayou and a pond on the Bald Point Peninsula. Those locations are on the coast but far enough inland that they are

mostly underlain by fine sediment, allowing for sand washed over from past storms to be easily identified.

Scientists analyzed samples for characteristics such as the age, type, amount and thickness of sand deposits. Those observations gave insight on when a storm occurred in the past, its intensity, flooding extent, wave energy and other circumstances. The findings were compared to existing data by the USGS and others on the climate, including sea surface temperatures, during that time period.

Wait, There’s More USGS scientists are also involved in several projects across the country reconstructing an array of scenarios thousands to millions of years back, looking at more than just hurricanes. In addition to studying the past, the USGS provides data and insight on more recent storms and real-time monitoring of current events.

The USGS science gives a perspective on Earth before humans frequently used instruments to measure the climate and weather. This research provides knowledge of past events that until now, nobody knew happened or why they occurred.

Baked Pork Chops With Apple Cranberry Sauce

Recipe courtesy of The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute

Prep time: 10 minutes

Cook time: 30 minutes

Servings: 4

Pork Chops:

• 4 Boneless Pork Chops (about 3 ounces each)

• 1/4 Teaspoon of Ground Black Pepper

• 1 Medium Orange, rinsed and zested

• 1/2 Tablespoon of Olive Oil

Sauce:

• 1/4 Cup of Low-Sodium Chicken Broth

• 1 Medium Apple, peeled and grated (about 1 cup)

• 1/2 Cinnamon Stick

• 1 Bay Leaf

• 1/2 Cup of Dried Cranberries

• 1/2 Cup of 100% Orange Juice

Preheat the oven to 350˚ F. To prepare the Pork Chops: Season the Pork Chops with the Pepper and the Orange Zest. In a large sauté pan, heat the Olive Oil over medium heat. Add the Pork Chops and cook them until they are browned on one side for about 2 minutes. Turn them and brown them for 2 more minutes. Remove the Pork Chops from the pan, place them on a nonstick baking sheet and bake them for 10 minutes to minimum internal temperature of 160˚ F.

To make the Sauce: Add the Chicken Broth to the sauté pan and stir it until it loosens the brown bits from the Pork Chops and set it aside.

In a small saucepan over medium heat, cook the Grated Apples, the Cinnamon Stick and the Bay Leaf until the Apples begin to soften.

Add the Cranberries, the Orange Juice and the reserved Broth. Bring them to a boil then lower the heat to a gentle simmer. Simmer it for 10 minutes or until the Cranberries are plump and the Apples are tender and remove the Cinnamon Stick. Peel the Orange and cut it into eight sections. Serve one Pork Chop with a 1/4 Cup of sauce and two Orange Segments.

For example, in this Savory Mango Chamoy Daiquiri, the apricots create a fruity, tangy flavor that’s a nice, refreshing twist on a traditional drink.

Bringing a touch of heat to summer cookouts can be a breeze with mild hot sauces added to dishes like these Spiced Pork Ribs, which can be created start-tofinish in the oven or taken outside to sear on the grill. Just a handful of ingredients are required to season the ribs to spicy perfection before wrapping them in foil and letting your oven do the work.

The lime is what makes it different from other hot sauces.

Hallandale Beach Community Partnerships

There Are Many Ways The City Is Working To Assist Residents

Over the past years we all have seen an increase in health issues due to COVID-19. We have also seen a reduction in access to insurance. Those with insurance do not have money to pay the out-of-pocket costs. Sadly, this trend will certainly impact all residents that are struggling to make ends meet even more since COVID-19 Relief is over.

Last month I had a chance to meet with VP Melida Akiti from Memorial Healthcare Systems who is in charge of Ambulatory and Community Service to discuss an amazing community partnership. I was invited to a briefing with her assistant, Chief Michel, Deputy Chief Thouez, Chief of Staff, Grace Mariot and Jonathan Carrillo of PAL. PAL and Memorial Healthcare Systems in an initiative called “One Community At A Time” to bring medical services directly to our residents in Hallandale Beach. The hospital wants to not just help residents, they plan to stay in the community for an entire year if not longer.

Memorial Healthcare Systems understands that when people do not take care of their health it has far-reaching implications. Many of us put off seeing the doctor. We miss Tests and Basic Preventive Care. Children miss their

Health Checkups too. All too often people simply cannot afford care. This leads to High Blood Pressure and Diabetes and other serious ailments. It has been documented that in underserved areas there is a greater risk of Diabetes and Hypertension.

Preventive Health Care is proven to reduce hospital stays. It seems counter intuitive that hospital administration would want to keep people out of the hospital but with insurance controls and managed care the longer people are in the hospital they do not get reimbursed. In our health system this costs us all money and drives up the cost of Health Care.

PAL has finally moved into the Foster Park Center. PAL is not simply about sports anymore. They are now The Police Activity League. They are doing many activities. They have already hosted arts and crafts, leadership training and antibullying programs just to name a few. They have a wonderful blueprint to move forward and work side by side with our residents. With this new partnership the stars have aligned and the sky’s the limit. The partnership will ensure that our local children have healthcare.

The timing also could not be more perfect as they have decided to host the Grand Opening of the PAL Offices at

Foster Park. This saved money for PAL and allowed them to roll out the new medical services. Weekly they plan to have their mobile unit and utilize Foster Park for doctor visits.

This site will only be for our residents. This is for ALL residents within our boundaries. There is no need for insurance. Actually, if you do not have insurance they will help individuals apply for Medicare and Medicaid. They will not turn individuals away but send them to their hometown. For example, if you live in West Park they have a location there. Same for Hollywood, Pembroke Park, Miramar and Pembroke Pines.

The program is not just simply a doctor visit, but it is for all care. Pediatrics, Gynecology, Mental Health Care and Testing. There is also a plan to visit our schools with the mobile van. Once a week the program will be at Foster Park, located at 609 Northwest Sixth Avenue and Foster Road for at least a year. There will be no drugs on the vans or at Foster Park due to safety. The doctors will assist patients for access to their needs through the hospital. If you have issues with transportation, please know our minibus provides services at the park.

Join us on Saturday, May 20th, 2023 at Foster Park for the FREE Grand Opening

will be food, entertainment, face painting and much more for all ages.

Hey Boomers: The 1980’s is Calling The Newest Addition to the 2024 Summer Olympics

Breaking made its Olympic debut at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires in 2018. Following its outstanding success, breaking has been chosen to featured as part of the 2024 Paris Olympics

Breakdancing, a dance style that originated in the streets of New York City in the 1970s, and many of us who grew up in the 80’s remember Breakdancing as part of our childhood, it was in the streets, in movies, and all over TV. Now it’s back and the world is eagerly anticipating its addition in the 2024 Summer Olympics, sports enthusiasts and fans alike are buzzing with excitement over the inclusion of a brand-new “sport” - breakdancing! Also known as breaking, this dynamic and expressive street dance form has gained global popularity and is set to make its Olympic debut in Paris, France, in 2024.

The inclusion of breakdancing in the 2024 Summer Olympics is a significant milestone for the dance community, as it marks the first time a street dance form has been recognized as an official Olympic sport. This decision reflects the increasing global appeal and cultural significance of breakdancing, which has grown into a mainstream phenomenon with competitions, events, and communities spanning across continents.

The journey of breakdancing to the Olympics has not been without challenges. Over the years, breakdancing has faced misconceptions and stigmas, often being dismissed as a form of “street” or “urban” dance that lacks the technicality and athleticism of traditional sports. However, breakdancers have been tirelessly working to dispel these misconceptions by showcasing the physical demands, artistic expression, and competitive nature of the dance form.

The inclusion of breakdancing in the

Olympics is expected to provide a platform for breakdancers from diverse backgrounds and cultures to come together and compete on the world stage.

It is also seen as an opportunity to promote inclusivity and diversity within the Olympic movement, as breakdancing embraces dancers of all genders, ages, and ethnicities, and encourages individuality and creativity.

The road to the 2024 Olympics has been paved with rigorous qualifications and selection processes. National and international breakdancing competitions have been held to determine the top breakdancers who will represent their countries at the Olympics. The competition format will consist of one-onone battles, where B-boys and B-girls will face off in rounds, showcasing their skills and creativity to impress the judges and win points.

The athletes who will compete in the breakdancing event at the 2024 Summer Olympics are expected to exhibit exceptional athleticism, strength, and artistry. They will showcase their mastery of complex moves and combinations, as well as their ability to interpret music and express themselves through dance. The competition promises to be a thrilling spectacle, with breakdancers pushing the boundaries of what is physically possible, and captivating audiences with their electrifying performances.

Apart from the athletic aspect, the artistic expression and creativity of breakdancing are also expected to be highlighted at the Olympics. Breakdancers often infuse their performances with their own unique style, incorporating elements of their cultural heritage, personality, and experiences. This artistic freedom is one of the defining features of breakdancing,

and it is anticipated that the Olympic stage will provide a platform for breakdancers to showcase their artistic prowess and captivate audiences with their creativity.

The inclusion of breakdancing in the Olympics has been celebrated as a historic moment for the dance community, with far-reaching positive impacts expected to ripple through the broader dance world. As an art form that emerged from marginalized communities and has grown into a global phenomenon, the recognition of breakdancing as an Olympic sport brings increased visibility, validation, and opportunities for practitioners worldwide.

One of the major positive impacts of breakdancing’s inclusion in the Olympics is the potential for increased funding and support for the dance community. Olympic recognition typically leads to increased investment in training programs, infrastructure, and resources for athletes, which can translate into more opportunities for dancers to hone their skills and compete at higher levels.

The inclusion of breakdancing in the Olympics is a positive development that reflects the ever-evolving nature of the Games. It acknowledges the importance of urban culture and street dance as legitimate art forms that deserve recognition and respect. By adding breakdancing, the Olympics become more inclusive and diverse, showcasing a wider range of athletic abilities and cultural expressions. It also creates an opportunity for talented breakdancers to compete on a global stage, inspiring a new generation of dancers to pursue their passion and showcase their skills. This move highlights the modernization of the Olympics and its commitment to embracing new cultural expressions.

For emergency services call 954-280-6950, technicians will arrive within the hour to begin the process of helping you get your life back. With services such as emergency packing and storing of salvageable belongings, following fire or flood, and standing water removal also available, they handle it all for you from AZ. The cost is most often fully covered by your homeowner’s insurance, leaving you with no worries about chasing down reimbursements from the insurance company. Face it, you have enough worries, this doesn’t need to be one of them. Titan Restoration Inc. works with all Florida homeowners’ insurance companies.

To assess the situation Titan Restoration Inc. offers state-ofthe-art leak detection, using infra-red cameras. This allows for non-invasive, non-messy leak detection. No need to tear up dry wall or floors just to find the source of the leak. Once the leaks have been found, you will be referred to a trusted, licensed plumber.

After the repairs’, State-ofthe-art specialized equipment is used to detect moisture levels in the air, dehumidifiers are placed in the affected area, and a Florida-licensed Mold Inspector will be sent to do a mold inspection. Samples will be taken of the air and mold. The specimens will be sent to their private laboratory for testing. This will determine which type of mold they are dealing with. Some molds are more toxic than others such as black mold, knowing the type, allows for proper precautions to be taken to ensure effective treatment and removal of the mold. Depending on the severity of the damages, drywall and flooring may need to be replaced to effectively rid your home or business of mold. Titan Restoration Inc. is a full remodeling and restoration company, specializing in kitchen and bath remodels, as well as a wide variety of other services. Throughout this process, Titan Restoration Inc. will be working with your insurance company every step of the way.

You should never attempt to remove mold without a licensed professional, it is unsafe, and hazardous to your health. Mold thrives in dark, damp environments such as under the kitchen or bathroom sinks, in unventilated basements, and closed in laundry rooms. It can even be found behind drywall. Because of the heat and humidity which Florida is known for, it provides a perfect environment for mold to thrive. Vigilance is key when it comes to mold remediation. Bleach and paint alone will not eliminate the problem, only hide it, allowing it to grow unseen and spread. This causes more damage to your home and health over time. People and pets all respond differently to mold and mildew. For some, it may be watery eyes, itchy throat, cough, or skin irritation. Confusion, disorientation, and even hallucinations can also be signs of mold exposure. For others, exposure to mold can cause very serious, even life-threatening health problems. When it comes to your health and the safety of your loved ones, trust the experts at Titan Restoration Inc. to have you breathing easier, in a mold-free environment.

Once the mold has been identified, the mold remediation process begins. Titan Restoration Inc. will dry out the affected area

using fans and dehumidifiers. Followed by thoroughly cleansing and sanitizing the affected areas using antimicrobial agents effective for mold-eliminating and prevention. HEPA- air purifiers are used to capture any airborne mold spores, leaving you with clean air. Green cleaners are used for mildew removal. Since mold spores are airborne and invisible to the naked eye it is necessary to deep clean the air ducts, carpets, furnishings, and

upholstery. Homeowners’ insurance covers the cost in most cases following water damage. These services are offered yearround, and it is recommended to have these done once a year to remove allergens, bacteria, dirt, and grime buildup that occurs naturally over time. These services are recommended more frequently if you have pets, suffer from allergies, or are a smoker, to ensure peace of mind and healthier living. After the repairs

are completed and your home or business is restored to its preloss condition, a Florida statelicensed Mold Inspector will be sent out to do a final inspection, to ensure all mold concerns were effectively eliminated. Titan Restoration Inc. takes pride in providing the best service experience to its customers from start to finish. Their goal is to have your property back to its pre-loss condition while taking the stress off you.

Titan Restoration Inc. is a customer-friendly company that also specializes in kitchen and bathroom remodeling from drywall and baseboards to cabinetry and flooring. Lag Ba’Omer is a festive day on the Jewish calendar, celebrating the anniversary of the passing of the great sage and mystic Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai. Also known as the Rashbi (an acronym for his name), he was the author of the Zohar, a foundational work of the Kabbalah, who requested that the day of his passing be celebrated, and not mourned.

It also commemorates another event. In the weeks between Passover and Shavuot, a plague raged amongst the disciples of the great sage Rabbi Akiva and on Lag Ba’Omer the dying ceased. The Talmud tells us that the plague affected the students of Rabbi Akiva “because they did not act respectfully towards each other.” Thus, Lag Ba’Omer carries the theme of the imperative to love and respect one’s fellow (ahavat yisrael). Lag Ba’Omer teaches us that while working to help improve our fellow man, we must never allow these efforts to compromise our love and respect for him.

It is traditional to light bonfires on Lag Ba’Omer eve, commemorating the

Yochai introduced into the world via his mystical teachings.

Children customarily go out into the fields and play with imitation bows and arrows. This commemorates the midrashic tradition that no rainbow was seen during Rabbi Shimon’s lifetime.

Rainbows first appeared after Noah’s flood, when G-d promised to never again devastate the world. When the world is deserving of punishment, G-d sends a rainbow instead. Rabbi Shimon’s merit protected the world, rendering the rainbow superfluous.

But there’s a much deeper meaning behind the bow and arrow game, with a lesson not just for Lag Ba’Omer, but something we can apply every day of the year. The first weapons devised by man were designed for hand-to-hand combat. But a person’s enemy or prey is not always an arm’s-length away, or even within sight. Soon the warrior and hunter felt the need for a weapon that could reach a target a great distance away, or

barriers of every sort.

With a bow and arrow, the tension in an arched bough of wood is exploited to propel a missile for great distances and slash through barriers. The inventor of this device first had to grasp the paradox that the deadly arrow must be pulled back toward one’s own heart in order to strike the heart of the opponent, and that the more it is drawn toward oneself, the more distant an adversary it can reach.

Chassidus teaches us that the same rules that apply to tools of destruction, apply to tools of construction - the tools we use to help build each other. And this is the deeper theme and lesson of Lag Ba’Omer: In order to reach a friend or relative who is otherwise unreachable, we have to first dig deep within our own heart. The deeper place from within our heart this love comes from, the deeper it will penetrate in our loved ones heart. The more we work on our own character, the more our children will work on theirs.

The Rebbe writes in Hayom Yom “If you rebuke your brother and he does not

listen, then it is you who is to blame. Words that come from the heart, enter the heart”. If you haven’t penetrated their heart, dig deeper within your own heart.

This year, Lag Ba’Omer is Monday Night - Tuesday, May 8-9, 2023. I encourage you to join a Lag Ba’Omer celebration taking place at any Chabad or synagogue near you. For the complete history and more lessons you can learn from this fun and Kabbalistic holiday visit www.ChabadChayil.org/Lag.

Feel free to join us in Highland Lakes for a bonfire, BBQ & Festive Music on Monday evening, 8:30pm at Chabad Chayil. There’s no charge, though RSVPing is appreciated.

About the author: Rabbi Kievman is the ambassador of The Rebbe to Highland Lakes, FL. He is founder of CHAP - an afterschool program for Jewish children in Public Schools, rabbi at The Family Shul & together with his wife directs Chabad Chayil. He can be reached at: (305) 770-1919 or rabbi@ChabadChayil.org
