Breaking the Psychodermatologic Cycle

Emotional Challenges Can Worsen Skin Conditions

Mental health is often overlooked when it comes to skin conditions - although it is indeed a critical component of our overall well-being. Skin conditions, including Eczema, Acne, Psoriasis, Dermatillomania and Pigmentation issues, can have a significant burden on an individual’s mental health, making it essential to understand the connection between the two.

Emotional challenges can worsen skin conditions and having to live with them can cause emotional distress, low SelfEsteem and social isolation, along with feelings of embarrassment, Anxiety and Depression.

This can understandably make it difficult to go through our daily lives. It is no surprise then that there are higher correlations of mental health issues for those who suffer from skin conditions. This is especially seen in Acne which can be a root of Anxiety and Body Dysmorphia for individuals. Acne is a common skin condition that can make people feel self-conscious and ashamed, especially during Adolescence when social acceptance is crucial. In adulthood as

well, the presence of Acne can bring shame as Acne is incorrectly associated with a teenagers’ poor hygiene when in fact it may have always been caused by a Hormonal Imbalance.

As a result, the appearance of skin conditions can affect SelfEsteem and confidence. People with skin conditions also face judgment and discrimination from others often, which can be isolating and demoralizing. Moreover, the physical discomfort and pain caused by skin conditions can also contribute to poor Mental Health, as it makes it challenging to carry out regular activities and can disrupt sleep.

Stress is also known to play a role in the development and exacerbation of skin conditions. When a person is stressed, their body produces Cortisol. This hormone can increase inflammation and potentially aggravate skin conditions like: Eczema, Psoriasis and even Dermatillomania. Dermatillomania is a skin picking disorder in which individuals remove irritation from their skin consciously or subconsciously to help alleviate their discomfort. According to the American Journal of Psychiatry,

it is estimated that 1 in 20 people have this “excoriation disorder” and that it is very challenging to treat. The pigmentation and scarring that results from the picking of the skin can also lead to significant disruption of the skin barrier. This makes complications like itching, sensitivity, irritation and infection more likely. Stress management through skin picking may play a role in how often individuals pick their skin and in response to what kinds of Psychological Distress.

Treating both the physical symptoms of skin conditions and the emotional distress they cause is essential for overall well-being. Seeking professional help, such as Therapy or Dermatology, can help manage the emotional and physical symptoms of skin conditions. Coping strategies like practicing consistent self-care, exercise, mediation, mindfulness and building a support system made up of supportive friends and family mem-

bers can help manage stress levels and improve overall mental well-being. Furthermore, some Supplements do exist to help manage the Psychological and Dermatological balance, but I recommend speaking with your Healthcare Provider for more information on what works best for you.

In conclusion, skin conditions can significantly impact Mental Health and it is crucial to acknowledge and address this connection. The “Psychodermatological Cycle” is where our skin affects our Psyche and our Psyche worsens our skin as a manifestation of eroding physical health. To improve overall well-being, seeking help and support, practicing self-care and building a support system are essential in managing skin con-

ditions and improving Mental fortitude. By taking care of both Physical and Mental Health, indi-

viduals can break this vicious cycle and enhance their quality of life. That’s it for now. Signing off!

Travelers from all over the world choose our backyard as their vacation destination. During the Spring Break Season, more travelers are vacationing on our beach. As with any popular destination, the more

people who visit — the more debris gets left behind. In addition to the City’s regular beach maintenance, there are dozens of dedicated volunteers who hit the beach every day to pitch in to pick up litter on our beach. The City of Hollywood hosts the monthly Hollywood Beach Sweep, where volunteers gather every second Saturday of the month to collect litter and cigarette butts from the sandy beach. Hollywood Beach Sweep Clean-Up takes place on Saturday, April 8th, 2023 from 7:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Volunteers meet at Charnow Park at Garfield Street and the Broadwalk, at 7:00 a.m.

Volunteers are asked to complete the registration form available on the City’s website: http://hollywoodfl.org and children ages 8 and older are welcome to participate when accompanied by an adult. We Need To Be Vigilant: If You See Something Say Something

stopped and questioned. In Golden Isles, the vehicles are stopped at a stop sign and their tags are read. There is a guard but they cannot ask people where they are headed. In Three islands there are no guards. In addition to the gatehouses there I have to tell readers there is still crime in the SNDs. They are only deterrents. There will never be 100 percent reduction in crime. These types of districts still can be established but it is a process. Owners within the district upon approval of the City Government must hold a vote to tax themselves for the additional costs. An advisory board is set up and the City becomes the Board Of Directors. The costs to run the district depends on what type of improvements the residents want put in place. It can be additional lighting, cameras, security guards, additional patrols or all of the above. Some like to debate the effectiveness of these measures. Some argue they are a waste of money. I could not disagree more. We all need to do what is possible to deter crime. If it gives any criminal pause to think about not perpetrating a crime it’s

come with them the cost of mental distress and worry.

Last month, I attended a meeting at one of the condominiums that fell victim to trespass and vandalism. Our Chief and two other LEOs attended the meeting to address concerns. I need to note while in some cases there are cameras there are not always clear shots of the perpetrators or the vehicle tags. In addition, many items in these cases when stolen are not marked with serial numbers. This

makes solving the crime extremely difficult. I want our readers to know that our department takes all crime seriously and do pursue all possible leads.

When discussing these crimes residents always ask where the police are. We have patrol vehicles out in what are called zones.

In the City, we have five. In addition to patrols there are other supervisors and detectives that are on the road. Officers obliviously move around their respec-

tive zones. They will take breaks and / or stop to fill out reports. There is not any city that can have police on every corner at all times during the day.

This is where residents can help. I know many of us have heard time and time again. “If you see something, say something.” You can help by calling in suspicious activity right away. If you have cameras let our police know. Also, there are ways to help deter crime. Fencing, gates,

cameras and not leaving items in the cars. Even with these countermeasures there is no guarantee that crime will not happen.

In a recent meeting I was asked about the Safe Neighborhood Districts. SNDs are geographical areas that are established by the voters in the area to add an additional layer of security protection. Some are private and others are not. The two in our City are public roads. This means vehicles cannot be

I am so sorry that many of our residents have had to suffer the fall out of these crimes. They not only cost mental distress but time and money. Our police and I will welcome the opportunity to come out and discuss these issues. Our Police Department will also evaluate properties to make recommendations on better security free of charge.

Harnessing The Power Of Art

Former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords Joins Forces With The Artist Bonnie Lautenberg

New Artwork “Guns Kill” by Bonnie Lautenberg Launches National Initiative at: www.giffords.org/miamiexhibit

Honoring 10th Anniversary of the Giffords Foundation to Protect Americans from Gun Violence.

“Americans are demanding a safer future and if we come together we can create a future free from gun violence,” says Former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, Founder of The Gun Violence Prevention Organization, Giffords. She released the following statement after at least three children and three adults were killed in a mass shooting at the Covenant School in Nashville, Tennessee.

“I am devastated and angry. At least three innocent children and three adults lost their lives to another incident of senseless gun violence. Countless people, including young kids, will be left traumatized by this tragedy. No parent, student or teacher should live in fear of a mass murder at school. Enough is enough. Our leaders need to act. We stand with the Nashville community and remain committed to fighting gun violence. We owe it to our children and future generations.”

“This vital message is reaching people across the country, thanks to Bonnie Lautenberg’s powerful artwork Guns Kill.” The non-profit organization is celebrating its 10th Anniversary and is joining forces with the Artist Bonnie Lautenberg. Lautenberg created a new artwork specifically for Gabby Giffords to help raise funds for Giffords: Courage to Fight Gun Violence. Contributors of $2,500 or more will receive a first edition, fine art print of this artwork, signed by Bonnie Lautenberg. To donate visit: www.giffords.org/miamiex-

hibit Gabby Giffords recently visited Lautenberg’s museum exhibition, at a time when legislation is currently being proposed in Florida that would allow people without any permits or training to carry concealed firearms. Watch a new video at: https:// vimeo.com/810900823

People who have never passed a background check or fired a gun in their lives will be allowed to carry a concealed gun in public. Similar laws in other states have led to dangerous increases in gun homicides.

Currently, people who want to obtain a concealed carry permit in Florida must pass a background check, complete firearm safety training and meet heightened eligibility standards. These provisions help ensure people with a history of violent behavior cannot carry firearms in public places.

Between July of 2021 and June of 2022, more than 7,600 Florida residents with a disqualifying history were prevented from acquiring concealed carry permits for these same reasons. This new permitless carry legislation would strip these important provisions.

“I created this artwork especially for Gabby Giffords,” says Bonnie Lautenberg. “I added tears streaming down the face of the Statue of Liberty, the two simple words ‘Guns Kill’ on her crown and locations of mass shootings written across Lady Liberty’s arm.”

“It saddens me deeply that the list of so many places keeps growing where Americans continue to lose loved ones to gun violence,” adds Lautenberg.

The artwork is currently on view at the Jewish Museum of

Florida-FIU in Miami Beach, where the exhibition Lady Liberty: A Bonnie Lautenberg Retrospective has received rave reviews with national acclaim by Artnet News as one of the “MustSee Museum Shows During Art Basel Miami Beach” and as “One of the Hottest Exhibitions During Art Basel Miami Beach” by Elite Traveler Magazine.

Bonnie Lautenberg divides her time between New York and Florida, where she has a second home in Palm Beach. The artist was selected by the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU to headline its new season due to her rising national acclaim and because Florida is her home during part of the year (the museum’s mission is to exhibit the work of Florida artists).

Located in South Beach’s historic Art Deco District, this museum was originally the first Synagogue in South Beach – making this a fullcircle moment for Giffords because she recently took the spiritual milestone of completing her Bat Mitzvah as an adult. Giffords’ father was Jewish and she has been exploring and studying her Jewish faith for more than 20 years.

Working with Lautenberg to present this initiative here is especially moving for Giffords, because this is the State of Florida’s official museum dedicated to telling the story of more than 250 years of Florida’s Jewish history, arts and culture.

Being surrounded by her friend’s museum exhibition, with her photographs and artworks of powerful women, makes it even

more special to Giffords. “Giffords’ recent Bat Mitzvah in 2021 was as joyous and tearful as you’d expect,” states this moving piece in The Forward, which goes on to say: In 2011,

ing all the prayers that accompany the ceremony, can be a lot for anyone, whether you’re 13 or 51. But Giffords’ Bat Mitzvah also came with additional challenges

been an important source of strength, culminating in her recent Bat Mitzvah ceremony.

Learning to chant a Torah portion in Hebrew, studying the meaning of the text and offering an interpretation to the congregation, not to mention memoriz-

Mayor’s Challenge For Water Conservation The City Of Sunny Isles Beach Joins National Campaign

Mayor Larisa Svechin is joining mayors across the country who are asking residents to make a long-term commitment to reduce pollution and manage water resources more wisely. In return residents can win over $50,000 in eco-friendly prizes, including $3,000 toward their home utility payments, water saving fixtures and hundreds of other prizes. Plus, this year students from thousands of schools across the country can make water conservation commitments that directly support their city’s standings.

The annual non-profit national community service campaign encourages leaders to inspire their residents, between April 130, to commit to making small changes at: mywaterpledge.com to use water more efficiently, reduce pollution and save energy. The program was started ten years ago by a handful of mayors who were looking for alternative ways to engage their residents more deeply about the coming water challenges in the United States.

Last year, residents from over 2,000 cities in all 50 U.S. States pledged to reduce their annual consumption of freshwater by

over 1 billion gallons, reduce waste sent to landfills by 35 million pounds and prevent nearly one hundred thousand pounds of hazardous waste from entering our watersheds. The Challenge goes beyond short term issues and looks at the ways our water use will affect the future of our communities — from how we manage our coasts, lakes and

rivers to reducing polluted runoff. To participate, residents go to: www.mywaterpledge.com and then make a series of online pledges to conserve water on behalf of the City Of Sunny Isles Beach. Cities compete in the following population categories: (5,000- 29,999 residents, 30,00099,999 residents, 100,000299,999 residents, 300,000-

599,999 residents and 600,000+ residents). Cities with the highest percentage of residents who take the challenge in their population category for a chance to win $3,000 toward their Home Utility Bills and hundreds more ecofriendly prizes including Toro Irrigation Smart Controllers, Gift cards for Hobie Surf Shops and more. In addition, one school

from each winning city will receive 100 pairs of Zenni Remakes™ eyeglasses that help reduce damage to eyes from prolonged exposure to blue light. Each pair is made from the recycled plastics equal to three discarded single use plastic water bottles.

Participating residents are also encouraged to use a custom created digital tool called MyVolunteer Water Project, in support of the program, that gives residents a unique way to do hands-on home, community and workplace projects yearround in support of their city’s sustainability efforts. The more projects residents do throughout the year, the better chance a city wins the mayor’s challenge in April.

The National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation is presented by the Wyland Foundation, with support from the U.S EPA WaterSense, The Toro Company, Zenni Optical and National League of Cities.

The foundation encourages environmental awareness through community events, education programs and public art projects, visit: www.wylandfoundation.org

Don’t Be Distracted Circus Politics Are Intended To Distract Us

It is easy to be distracted right now by the bread and circus politics that have dominated the news headlines lately, but don’t be distracted.

Don’t be fooled, not even a little.

We’re being subjected to the oldest con game in the books, the magician’s sleight of hand that keeps you focused on the shell game in front of you while your wallet is being picked clean by ruffians in your midst.

This is how tyranny rises and freedom falls.

What characterizes American Government today is not so much dysfunctional politics as it is ruthlessly contrived governance carried out behind the entertaining, distracting and disingenuous curtain of political theater. And what political theater it is, diabolically Shakespearean at times, full of sound and fury, yet in the end, signifying nothing.

We are being ruled by a government of scoundrels, spies, thugs, thieves, gangsters, ruffians, extortionists, bounty hunters, battle-ready warriors and cold-blooded killers who communicate using a language of force and oppression.

The U.S. Government now poses the greatest threat to our freedoms.

More than Terrorism, more than domestic extremism, more than gun violence and organized crime, even more than the perceived threat posed by any single politician, the U.S. Government remains a greater menace to the life, liberty and property of its citizens than any of the so-called dangers from which the government claims to protect us.

No matter who has occupied the White House in recent years, the Deep State has succeeded in keeping the citizenry divided and at each other’s throats.

After all, as long as we’re busy fighting each other, we’ll never manage to present a unified front against tyranny in any form.

Unfortunately, what we are facing is tyranny in every form.

The facts speak for themselves.

We’re being robbed blind by a government of thieves. Americans no longer have any real protection against government agents empowered to seize private property at will. For

instance, police agencies under the guise of asset forfeiture laws are taking Americans’ personal property based on little more than a suspicion of criminal activity and keeping it for their own profit and gain. In one case, police seized more than $17,000 in cash from two sisters who were trying to start a dog breeding business. Despite finding no evidence of wrongdoing, police held onto the money for months.

We’re being taken advantage of by a government of scoundrels, idiots and cowards. When you’ve got government representatives who spend a large chunk of their work hours fundraising, being feted by lobbyists, shuffling through a lucrative revolving door between public service and lobbying and making themselves available to anyone with enough money to secure access to a congressional office, you’re in the clutches of a corrupt oligarchy.

We’re being locked up by a government of greedy jailers. We have become a carceral state, spending three times more on our prisons than on our schools and imprisoning close to a quarter of the world’s prisoners, despite the fact that crime remains relatively low and the U.S. makes up only 5% of the world’s population. The rise of overcriminalization and profitdriven private prisons provides

even greater incentives for locking up American citizens for such non-violent “crimes” as having an overgrown lawn.

We’re being spied on by a government of Peeping Toms. The government, along with its corporate partners, is watching everything you do, reading everything you write, listening to everything you say and monitoring everything you spend. Omnipresent surveillance is paving the way for government programs that profile citizens, document their behavior and attempt to predict what they might do in the future, whether it’s what they might buy, what politician they might support, or what kinds of crimes they might commit.

We’re being ravaged by a government of ruffians, rapists and killers. It’s not just the police shootings of unarmed citizens that are worrisome. It’s the SWAT team raids gone wrong—more than 80,000 annually—that are leaving innocent citizens wounded, children terrorized and family pets killed. It’s the roadside strip searches—in some cases, cavity searches of men and women alike carried out in full view of the public—in pursuit of drugs that are never found.

We’re being forced to surrender our freedoms—and those of our children—to a government of extortionists, money launderers and professional pirates. The

American people have repeatedly been sold a bill of goods about how the government needs more money, more expansive powers and more secrecy (secret courts, secret budgets, secret military campaigns, secret surveillance) in order to keep us safe. Not surprisingly, the primary ones to benefit from these government exercises in legal money laundering have been the corporations, lobbyists and politicians who inflict them on a trusting public.

We’re being held at gunpoint by a government of soldiers: a standing army. The U.S. Government is creating its own standing army of militarized police and teams of weaponized, federal bureaucrats. These civilian employees are being armed to the hilt with guns, ammunition and military-style equipment; authorized to make arrests and trained in military tactics. There are now reportedly more bureaucratic (non-military) government civilians armed with high-tech, deadly weapons than U.S. Marines.

Whatever else it may be—a danger, a menace, a threat—the U.S. Government is certainly no friend to freedom.

You cannot have a republican form of government—nor a democratic one, for that matter— when the government views itself as superior to the citizenry, when it no longer operates for the

benefit of the people, when the people are no longer able to peacefully reform their government, when government officials cease to act like public servants, when elected officials no longer represent the will of the people, when the government routinely violates the rights of the people and perpetuates more violence against the citizenry than the criminal class, when government spending is unaccountable and unaccounted for, when the judiciary act as courts of order rather than justice, and when the government is no longer bound by the laws of the Constitution.

As I make clear in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, we no longer have a government “of the people, by the people and for the people.”

Rather, what we have is a government of wolves.

The Final Masterworks Concert South Florida Symphony Orchestra

Celebrates Triumphant 25th Anniversary

South Florida Symphony Orchestra will close out its triumphant 25th anniversary season with a grand finale concert featuring Rachmaninoff’s demanding Piano Concerto No. 3 performed by Svetlana Smolina; along with Bruckner’s choral masterpiece, Te Deum, featuring the South Florida Symphony Chorus and vocalists Elaine Alvarez, soprano; Rehanna Thelwell, mezzo-soprano; Neil Nelson, bass-baritone; and Arnold Rawls, tenor. Led by Music Director Sebrina María Alfonso, the concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 26, at The Parker in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets are on sale, now.

“Our final Masterworks concert at The Parker is a thing of beauty and the perfect way to say farewell to our milestone 25th anniversary season,” said Maestra Alfonso. “We’ll be celebrating Sergei Rachmaninoff’s 150th birthday with his virtuosic Piano Concerto No. 3 featuring Svetlana Smolina’s gorgeous yet technically masterful playing and presenting Bruckner’s great, large-scale choral work of praise and thanksgiving, Te Deum. It has been an absolute joy to lead this incredible orchestra for 25 years, and I am thankful for every opportunity we have to share our love of this art form with our

audiences.”

Born April 1, 1873, Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 is considered to be one of the most demanding and beautiful of all of the Russian composer’s piano concertos. The romantic, yet complicated piece, was originally intended as a spotlight soloist piece for Rachmaninoff’s friend Josef Hofmann, who eventually elected not to perform it. So complex is this piece, that the biographical film drama “Shine” detailed pianist David Helfgott’s quest to conquer the concerto resulting in his ultimate mental breakdown.

Performing Piano Concerto No. 3 will be audience favorite and recurring South Florida Symphony soloist Svetlana Smolina. Smolina has performed with orchestras and in recitals, worldwide. Notable appearances include the Mariinsky Orchestra at Carnegie Hall, New York Philharmonic, St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Orchestre National de France, Odessa and Nizhny Novgorod Philharmonic, Pittsburgh Symphony, New Florida Philharmonic, Shreveport Symphony and New York Chamber Orchestra. A frequent guest at international festivals, Smolina has performed at the Salzburg Festival, Hollywood Bowl, Ravinia Rising Stars, White Nights, Maggio Musicale,

Mikkeli, Ruhr, Easter, Rotterdam Phillips Gergiev, International Gilmore, Settimane Musicali di Stresa, Michelangeli, Hennessy Artists Series at Hanoi Opera House, The Voice of Music in Upper Galilee, Royal Covent Garden Opera, Tchaikovsky Moscow Conservatory, Mozarteum, Merkin Hall, Kravis Center, NJPAC, Gulbenkian Foundation, Grand Artists Series in Tel-Aviv and Academia Santa Cecilia in Rome. In addition to her touring engagements, Smolina is currently piano program director for European Academy of Fine Arts / Piano Conservatory (a division of Irish American University) and piano program director of the Philadelphia International Music Festival.

Anton Bruckner’s Te Deum premiered in Vienna on May 2, 1885. The composer himself called the work “the pride of his life” and it stands as the composer’s most overtly joyful hymn of praise and thanks. The piece was performed more than 30 times in his lifetime with the first performance in the United States occurring at the Cincinnati May Festival on May 26, 1892 by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Cincinnati May Festival Chorus and soloists.

Two New Spring Exhibitions

“Lonnie Holley: If You Really Knew” And “South Florida Cultural Consortium (SFCC)”

The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA) is pleased to announce two exciting exhibitions opening this spring. “Lonnie Holley: If You Really Knew” invites visitors to experience the work of Prolific Artist Lonnie Holley in his first major exhibition in the South. The second showcases the work of 12 intergenerational South Florida artists selected to show their work in the “South Florida Cultural Consortium (SFCC)” exhibition. Both exhibitions go on view from Wednesday, May 10th, 2023 through Sunday, October 1st, 2023.

“Lonnie Holley: If You Really Knew” provides an intimate and focused look at the career of Birmingham, Alabama-born Artist and musician Lonnie Holley. The exhibition, curated by MOCA Curator Adeze Wilford, will feature 70 works including foundational “sandstone” sculptures, new works on paper and large-scale quilt paintings that depict faces. Known for his unique style of art that draws inspiration from his life experiences, Holley often incorporates found objects and everyday materials, which he transforms into thought-provoking art. Holley’s influence on Southern art is highlighted throughout “If You Only Knew,” including a section he curated featuring works

from artists such as Miami native Purvis Young, Thornton Dial, Mary T. Smith and Hawkins Bowling.

“Holley’s work is not just aesthetically compelling, but it also challenges viewers to rethink their relationships to objects, discarded items and the environment,” said Adeze Wilford, MOCA Curator. “The exhibition offers an emotionally moving experience and is a testament to the power of art to inspire social change.”

Also opening this spring is the South Florida Cultural Consortium (SFCC) exhibition, which brings together 12 artists working across various media including sculpture, film and sitespecific installations. The exhibition, this year hosted and organized by MOCA, will provide a snapshot of the breadth and depth of the artistic talent in the South Florida art scene. A catalog will be published to accompany the exhibition.

The 12 artists, Farley Aguilar, Gabino A. Castelán, Nereida Garcia-Ferraz, Moira Holohan, Francesco Lo Castro, Tory Mata, Beatriz Monteavaro, Ema Ri, Asser Saint-Val, Carin Wagner, Carrington Ware and Addison Wolff, were selected through the SFCC 2021-2022 Visual and Media Artists Program, which awards a grant and the oppor-

tunity to take part in an exhibition at a visual arts institution in one of the five counties (Broward, Martin, Miami-Dade, Monroe and Palm Beach).

Unexpected Hotel Travel Trends for 2023

(Family Features) Following the COVID-19 lockdown, outdoor and drivable destinations were in high demand for domestic travelers. As the country has reopened, Americans embraced the idea of getting back to normal and began traveling much as they did prior to the pandemic.

However, travel trends for 2023 suggest there is no normal when it comes to travel planning. Instead, individual interests are driving decisions about where to go and what to do.

“We see a detailed and robust picture of travel into 2023,” Expedia Brands President Jon Gieselman said. “We’re seeing a surge in trips to culture capitals, a new wave of interest in wellness retreats and a spike in demand for outdoor destinations beyond just beaches and mountains. It’s not a new normal so much as people branching out to unexpected trends in what we’re calling the ‘no normal.’”

A close look at these trends suggests there is no “one-sizefits-all” approach to travel in 2023. Insights sourced from the company’s first-party data, and from custom research of thousands of travelers and industry professionals across 17 countries, show value, alternative wellness options and hotels that cater to evolving traveler needs are heavily influencing travel choices.

3-Star Superstars

Travelers are seeking smarter ways to see the world without compromising on comfort or cool factor. In the U.S., nearly onethird (32%) of travelers are more concerned with value for money than ever before with data showing interest is up more than 20% globally in three-star hotels. In 2023, 40% of U.S. travelers plan to stay in 1-3-star hotels, and 34% plan to book a vacation

with added value inclusions, such as free parking or breakfast. Showing a shift in mindset from the post-pandemic bucket-list mentality and moving toward a more spontaneous approach, one-third of travelers would rather go on more trips in threestar properties than splurge on one big luxury getaway.

New Wave Wellness

According to the survey, more than half (53%) of Americans are seeking wellness breaks but cite boredom with traditional retreats

and want to experience something more exciting in 2023.

Millennials are the top drivers of this as 60% of 25-34-year-olds are seeking alternative wellness getaways. Most travelers want to explore new offerings in the U.S. However, Gen Z has a different view and would prefer to book an adventure to Norway, Turkey, Switzerland, Iceland or Sri Lanka.

To capture this awakened market, some hotels are offering advanced rejuvenation programs and hands-on activities that encourage travelers to get up

close and personal with nature. Sylvotherapy (forest bathing) and fruit harvesting are popular alternatives to cooking courses, sport holidays and meditation sessions.

Hot Hotel Openings

Around the World Hotels that cater to evolving traveler needs are opening around the world. These properties offer far more than a place to sleep with destination restaurants, coworking spaces and beautiful interiors. From an artfilled social hub in London to unbridled luxury in Rome, these are some hotels to have on your radar for the year ahead:

• La Palma, Capri, Italy

• 100 Princes Street, Edinburgh, United Kingdom

• Ikos Odisia, Corfu, Greece

• Celestial Suites, Kefalonia, Greece

• 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay, Princeville, Kauai

• Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo, Tamarindo, Mexico

• Alila Kothaifaru Maldives, Maldives, Indian Ocean

• Six Senses, Rome, Italy

Florida’s Singing Sons: Middle School Opera Stars Steal The Spotlight

The Florida Singing Sons, a 48-year-old Fort Lauderdale institution, is providing the children’s chorus for Florida Grand Opera’s upcoming production of Tosca. Already a hit in Miami, the Sons next come home to Fort Lauderdale to reprise their roles as rambunctious Roman choirboys. For most of this lively troupe of 11-year-old boys (and two high school girls), Tosca is their first opera and their first stage experience. Children’s choruses are an operatic tradition, and Tosca composer Giacomo Puccini had a fondness for them. In Turandot, he used the innocence of children singing a traditional Chinese melody to contrast with the horror of the Prince of Persia’s execution. Act II of La Bohème opens with a raucous Christmas Eve street scene, including a horde of excited children mobbing the toy seller Parpignol. In Tosca, a riot of rowdy choirboys defy the hapless Sacristan and face discipline from the frightening Baron Scarpia before joining in the glorious Te Deum that crowns Act I. The Singing Sons’ perform-

ance has already received rave reviews in Miami, with Lawrence Budmen of the South Florida Classical Review writing, “The Florida Singing Sons boy choir (under Daniel Bates and Malcolm Rogers) provided fresh voices and high spirits for the Act I finale, joining the FGO chorus (under Jared Peroune) in a vigorous and unified, well - coordinated effort that rang the house.” Singing Sons Artistic Director Daniel Bates, a former FGO Studio Artist who recently appeared as Friar 1 in Buoso’s Ghost, said, “There’s a lot of energy, as you might imagine.

They’re so excited to be there.

They couldn’t get enough of the orchestra and the high notes.

When Arturo (Chacón-Cruz, playing Cavaradossi) had his ‘Vittoria’ moment, they did all the kid things, screaming and wailing.

They have this saying: ‘He ate.’

‘He ate’ means ‘he did very well.’

‘He ate and left no crumbs’ means that it was phenomenal.

So apparently, there were no crumbs left after Arturo sang!” The Sons work with students throughout Broward, Miami-

Dade, and Palm Beach Counties. Students as young as 7 are accepted, and many stay with the organization all the way through high school. The organization’s mission is to provide an enriching musical experience for talented children (girls are also welcome), imbuing them with self-discipline, strength of character, and richness of personality, while offering the community a source of pride in the achievement of its youth. The kids study vocal technique, musicianship, and a wide variety of choral literature ranging from rock anthems to sacred music, from Broadway to opera. They tour both domestically and worldwide, and are in demand with South Florida performing arts organizations. They regularly sing with the New World Symphony, Miami Bach Society, Master Chorale of South Florida, New World Symphony, Nova Singers, and the Symphony of the Americas.

“I like to say that we use music as a way to create young men. Now we have some girls, so it’s a way to create young

adults,” says Bates. “We take them as children and teach them life lessons along the way, while giving them best friends. We give very high-level experiences like Tosca, but also, while music is our medium, we’re really a safe place for these kids to come, be themselves, meet people with similar interests, and we do a lot more than just music.”

“We are thrilled to have Florida’s Singing Sons with us for Tosca,” says FGO General Director and CEO Susan T. Danis,“ Not only does their presence add a moment of charming levity to a highly dramatic story, but their musical contribution is invaluable. We are lucky to have an organization like the Singing Sons in our community. Their contribution to the arts scene in South Florida and to our production of Tosca is invaluable.”

Along with the Singing Sons, Florida Grand Opera’s Tosca stars Metropolitan Opera soprano Toni Marie Palmertree in the title role, international star tenor and South Florida resident Arturo Chacón-Cruz as Cavaradossi, and FGO favorite

baritone Todd Thomas in his signature role as Baron Scarpia. Tosca plays on April 13 and 15, 2023 at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are available at: fgo.org or by calling: 800.741.1010.

About Florida Grand Opera

FGO was founded in 1941 as Greater Miami Opera and merged with The Opera Guild of Fort Lauderdale, Inc. in 1994. As Florida’s premier opera company, it presents standard repertoire, contemporary works, new commissions, and original productions — all featuring projected translations in English and Spanish. The mainstage operas of the season include Domenico Cimarosa’s El matrimonio secreto, sung in Spanish translation (Nov. 12 - 15, 2022), Giacomo Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi and Michael Ching’s Buoso’s Ghost (Jan. 28 – Feb.11, 2023), Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca (Mar. 18 - Apr. 15, 2023), and Gioacchino Rossini’s The Barber of Seville (Apr.29 – May 20, 2023).

Face it, you have enough worries, this doesn’t need to be one of them. Titan Restoration Inc. works with all Florida homeowners’ insurance companies.

To assess the situation Titan Restoration Inc. offers state-ofthe-art leak detection, using infra-red cameras. This allows for non-invasive, non-messy leak detection. No need to tear up dry wall or floors just to find the source of the leak. Once the leaks have been found, you will be referred to a trusted, licensed plumber.

After the repairs’, State-ofthe-art specialized equipment is used to detect moisture levels in the air, dehumidifiers are placed in the affected area, and a Florida-licensed Mold Inspector will be sent to do a mold inspection. Samples will be taken of the air and mold. The specimens will be sent to their private laboratory for testing. This will determine which type of mold they are dealing with. Some molds are more toxic than others such as black mold, knowing the type, allows for proper precautions to be taken to ensure effective treatment and removal of the mold. Depending on the severity of the damages, drywall and flooring may need to be replaced to effectively rid your home or business of mold. Titan Restoration Inc. is a full remodeling and restoration company, specializing in kitchen and bath remodels, as well as a wide variety of other services. Throughout this process, Titan Restoration Inc. will be working with your insurance company every step of the way.

You should never attempt to remove mold without a licensed professional, it is unsafe, and hazardous to your health. Mold thrives in dark, damp environments such as under the kitchen or bathroom sinks, in unventilated basements, and closed in laundry rooms. It can even be found behind drywall. Because of the heat and humidity which Florida is known for, it provides a perfect environment for mold to thrive. Vigilance is key when it comes to mold remediation. Bleach and paint alone will not eliminate the problem, only hide it, allowing it to grow unseen and spread. This causes more damage to your home and health over time. People and pets all respond differently to mold and mildew. For some, it may be watery eyes, itchy throat, cough, or skin irritation. Confusion, disorientation, and even hallucinations can also be signs of mold exposure. For others, exposure to mold can cause very serious, even life-threatening health problems. When it comes to your health and the safety of your loved ones, trust the experts at Titan Restoration Inc. to have you breathing easier, in a mold-free environment.

Once the mold has been identified, the mold remediation process begins. Titan Restoration Inc. will dry out the affected area

using fans and dehumidifiers. Followed by thoroughly cleansing and sanitizing the affected areas using antimicrobial agents effective for mold-eliminating and prevention. HEPA- air purifiers are used to capture any airborne mold spores, leaving you with clean air. Green cleaners are used for mildew removal. Since mold spores are airborne and invisible to the naked eye it is necessary to deep clean the air ducts, carpets, furnishings, and

upholstery. Homeowners’ insurance covers the cost in most cases following water damage. These services are offered yearround, and it is recommended to have these done once a year to remove allergens, bacteria, dirt, and grime buildup that occurs naturally over time. These services are recommended more frequently if you have pets, suffer from allergies, or are a smoker, to ensure peace of mind and healthier living. After the repairs

are completed and your home or business is restored to its preloss condition, a Florida statelicensed Mold Inspector will be sent out to do a final inspection, to ensure all mold concerns were effectively eliminated. Titan Restoration Inc. takes pride in providing the best service experience to its customers from start to finish. Their goal is to have your property back to its pre-loss condition while taking the stress off you.

Titan Restoration Inc. is a customer-friendly company that also specializes in kitchen and bathroom remodeling from drywall and baseboards to cabinetry and flooring. It is not necessary to have damage to your home, to call on Titan Restoration Inc. for all your remodeling needs. For a free estimate call: 954-280-6950, now offering 10% off a $350 service for out-of-pocket customers.

Festival Future

Amid Chaos and Anxiety, ‘Festival of the Future’ to Focus on Utopian Future; Bringing Calm to the Present

Amid an atmosphere of war, sickness and global financial uncertainty, local Chabad rabbis are leading a campaign to raise awareness of a little - known Jewish holiday, this year dubbed ‘Festival of the Future,’ focusing on bringing a message of hope for the future and serenity to the present.

The holiday of Passover — began yesterday at sundown on Wednesday, April 5th — and its Seder nights are well known — and have been well observed throughout the great state of Florida with public Seders in almost every city and the distribution of Shmurah Matzah (“the Rolls-Royce of Matzah) — but the eighth and final day of Passover has its own focus: the utopian future of the Messianic era, when “nation shall not lift the sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore.” As the world reels from the devastating effects of conflict, Chabad rabbis throughout the state will lead their Jewish communities in celebrating the future era of peace.

During this time of upheaval, it’s crucial that we find ways to bring peace of mind into our lives. On the last day of Passover, our focus shifts from the past redemption of the Jewish people from slavery in Egypt to the future redemption and the Utopian Messianic Era. While we eagerly await this era of global friendship and peace, we

can bring its lessons into our lives today.

Synagogues everywhere will mark the day by reading the Haftorah and studying the Biblical vision of the Messianic Era, participate in interactive ses sions guiding participants in find ing ‘Oasis of Calm’ in the current climate. The last day of Passover (“Acharon Shel Pesach”) is par ticularly associated with Moshiach and the future redemption. The Haftarah (read ing from the Prophets) for this day is from Isaiah 11, which describes the promised future era of universal peace and divine perfection. Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov instituted the custom of partaking of a “Moshiach’s meal” on the afternoon of the last day of Passover; in addition to the Matzah eaten at “Moshiach’s meal,” the Rebbes of Chabad added the custom of drinking four cups of wine, as in the seder held on Passover’s first days.

Local Chabad’s will cap off the day with Seudas Moshiach, a special holiday farewell meal. During this traditional and mystical feast, community members will focus on bringing the Messianic message of harmony into their own lives.

All are of course welcome to join us at Chabad Chayil as we close out the Passover holiday together, enjoying wine, Matzah and other Passover goodies, discussing words of Torah with inspirational stories, singing Chassidic melodies and finding

The holiday of Passover - began yesterday at sundown on Wed, April 5th - and its Seder nights are well known

out why this day has a special energy related to the coming of Moshiach.

While our world is still very much an imperfect place, if we look beneath the surface, we can see that we are already on the path towards a more perfect world. Yes, there is still war between nations — but it is condemned by the vast majority of the globe, as peace is valued now more than ever. Yes, there is still illness, but modern medical advances are bringing hope to millions. On the last day of Passover, we will focus on find-

ing the goodness that is already in the world, bringing the serenity and calm of the utopian future for which we hope into our lives today.
