SWEET SUCCESS By Raelin Storey HOLLYWOOD BEACH - More than 30,000 people converged on the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk to ring in the holiday season during the City of Hollywood’s 57th annual Candy Cane Parade.
With a theme this year of “Jingle Bell Jamboree,” the parade lit up the Broadwalk with holiday colors, festivities and cheer. The parade featured approximately nearly 150 different floats, vehicles, walking groups and bands
with over 1,600 participants. Bringing up the rear with a booming “Ho, ho, ho!” was the jolly old elf himself, Santa Claus, aboard a float crafted by the Hollywood Junior Chamber of Commerce or Jaycees. The event was pre-

WHAT KIND OF SYMPTOMS DO VARICOSE VEINS CAUSE? Small spider veins cause symptoms in about 50% of people. These include restless leg syndrome, night cramps, heavy or tired legs or a burning, creepy, crawly or aching feeling in the legs. With more severe vein disease people can develop increasing leg pain, swelling, discoloration, infections, bleeding from the veins, blood clots or leg ulcers says Susan B. Fox, D.O., RSPVI, FSVM. ‘AROUND THE CITY OF CHOICE’
City Renee Manager Crichton making a major difference
HALLANDALE BEACH - City Renee Manager Crichton continues to make strides over the past six month fine tuning our city’s operation and staff. One of these areas is specifically our Building Department. Our city’s Building Department plays an extremely vital role in the public safety of every building in our community and the success of economic development. The last thing any city wants is to create bureaucracies and systems that overburden residents or property owners where contractors are needed to do necessary work. The system has been established by law that require building departments to ensure any construction projects follow the laws of the State of Florida and any additional codes adopted within the municipality. The ultimate goal is to ensure the safety of the property owner and residents. This is done through the permitting process. Over the course of the years I've come to understand you cannot build, rebuild or often repair a building without a permit. Every process in any type of business can continue to be reevaluated and fine-tuned. Government is not any different. Over the past years changes have been adopted and implemented in our Build-
Mayor Joy Cooper
ing Department. One main problem in our Building Department has been the lack of updated efficient computer technology. In this day and age this is one of the biggest tools that will help save time which equates with saving money. The city is in the process of replacing our main information technology systems. This new system will have a major impact on every single department and its efficiency levels. The other large component is having the proper staffing levels and performance procedures in place. Human resources in this department and every department are critical. Customer service is impaired without trained staff that is equipped with the technology and knowledge to implement and perform their jobs. A large component of the department success is obviously the leadership and knowledge that the director brings to the
table. Over the course of the years we have had a number of Directors in Development Services. Each brought to the table their unique experience, knowledge and the leadership style. The unknown factor when hiring an individual often lies with their ability to apply this set of skill sets within an existing department. In other words, you really need a good fit and that is something that needs to be tested and massaged. City Manager Crichton is in charge of hiring and firing both chiefs and every department director. In the Building Department she conducted an extensive search to hire a new Director of Development Services and a new Building Official. The building official’s position was vacant and the City contracted with an outside agency to perform the duties of a head building official. The head building official is in charge of executing permits. It is their sole responsibility to sign off on every permit. City Manager Crichton has hired Mr. Sergio Ascunce, pronounced “ascun-say” as our new Building Official. Mr. Ascunce brings to the table a wealth of knowledge and background. He had worked for the City of Doral for over seven years and was hired by the City of Pompano.
For those readers unfamiliar with the City of Doral, it has become quite a successful community that has embraced many business partners and has worked very closely to establish a strong sustainable community. One of the key components necessary, in my opinion, is to have a Building Official that understands the responsibility of implementing the business codes, but also applying a level of common sense and flexibility to address the needs of a built out environment. We all welcome Mr. Ascunce and look forward to working with him.
The other new hire is Director of Development Services, Mr. Charles Wu. Mr. Wu also comes to our community with an amazing background of both education and practical field applications. Mr. Wu has two Master degrees; one in Architecture and the other in Urban Planning. Director Wu worked for the City of West Palm Beach for many years. He was part of the team that implemented the redevelopment of downtown City Place. He then worked in Fairfax, Virginia as the County Development Director. We welcome him to the team and look forward to continued improve-
ments within the delivery of services and this vital department As many of our friends and neighbors take time to celebrate the holiday of Hanukkah this week, special thoughts go out to those with family and loved ones in harm’s way in Israel. I wish everyone a Happy, Healthy and Peaceful Hanukkah! Happy holidays! VARICOSE VEINS: Obtaining Younger, More Beautiful Legs without Surgery
From Page 1A –––––––––––––––––––– 80 million Americans are affected by venous disease. Approximately, 25% of women and 15% of men have some degree of vein problems. This increases so that by age sixty, 72% of women and 40% of men are affected by vein disease.
ARE VARICOSE VEINS DANGEROUS? Varicose Veins are not usually dangerous. However, large, ropey superficial veins can sometimes lead to sluggish blood flow that may make a person more likely to develop a blood clot. If this is in the deep venous system, it can be dangerous and blood thinners need to be started. WHY DO SOME PEOPLE GET VARICOSE VEINS AND OTHERS DO NOT? There is no conclusive answer to this except that if your parents or relatives have varicose veins you may be more inclined to develop them. Contributing factors appear to be hormonal changes, pregnancy, weight gain and occupations where you are on your feet all day. WHAT CAUSES VARICOSE VEINS? No one knows exactly but it appears that two factors contribute to the development of varicose veins. One is that the vein walls weaken and the second is that the valves inside the veins don’t work properly. When the valves do not work properly the flow of blood is disrupted which leads to a higher pressure inside the vein and vein problems ensue. IS THERE SOMETHING THAT I CAN DO TO HELP MY VARICOSE VEINS? Try to maintain an ideal weight and exercise regularly. Calf pumping exercises help the veins circulate the blood. The mainstay of conservative therapy is wearing compression hose. These are not the same as storebought support hose. Your doctor should write you a prescription for medical-grade compression hose that you should wear from the minute you get up until you lie down to go to sleep. CAN I TAKE SOMETHING TO MAKE THEM GO AWAY? Some reports state that herbal medications may help decrease leg swelling and aching. These
include Bilberry fruit extract, Horse chestnut seed extract , Rutosides and Pycnogenol. Longterm, well - controlled trials are lacking on many of these supplements.
WHAT CAN I DO TO GET RID OF MY SPIDER VEINS? The treatment of choice for smallmedium sized veins is sclerotherapy. Sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution into the veins causing them to seal shut and disappear over time. It feels similar to a bug bite. Sclerotherapy usually takes a few treatment sessions and is viewed as cosmetic by most insurance plans. WHAT IF MY VEINS ARE TOO LARGE TO INJECT? If the veins are larger than 3 to 4mm they may need to be removed through tiny incisions. This procedure is called Ambulatory Phlebectomy. It is performed in the office under local anesthetic and leaves virtually no scarring and has almost no down time. Another procedure to treat large veins is foam sclerotherapy. This procedure is performed by making the sclerosant into a foam and injecting it into the veins. This works relatively well on medium to large veins and can be performed under ultrasound guidance for better accuracy. HOW DO I KNOW IF I NEED SURGERY TO GET RID OF MY VEINS? You should see a vein or vascular specialist says Susan B. Fox, D.O., RSPVI, FSVM. They may need to order special tests to help determine if you have abnormal venous blood flow. These tests are non-invasive and can be done in the office in less than an hour and are usually covered by insurance. WHAT OPTIONS DO I HAVE TO TREAT MY LARGE VEINS BESIDES VEIN SURGERY OR VEIN STRIPPING? There are newer less invasive treatment options that are covered by Medicare and many insurance plans. Two procedures that are FDA approved include VNUS Closure where a radiofrequency catheter is placed inside the vein and Endovenous Laser therapy where a laser catheter is placed inside the vein to seal it shut. Endovenous laser procedure is usually done in the doctor's
office under local anesthesia. It takes less than 30 minutes and has minimal to no scarring. The newest minimally invasive procedure is called Clarivein. It is FDA approved and requires no incisions to close the veins. The patient only receives one or two injections of local anesthetic. A wire is placed inside the vein which rotates around and a sclerosing solution is injected into the vein which coats and closes the vein. This is called mechanicochemical ablation. It is performed in the office in less than 15 minutes. People can return to work later that day or the next. There is only minimal discomfort after the procedure. Walking is encouraged even immediately after the procedure. In one survey of patients following the endolaser procedure, 99.8% of patients said that were satisfied with treatment and would refer a friend for the procedure. WHY TREAT MY VEINS? DON'T THEY JUST COME BACK? When the veins are treated by vein experts, the results are excellent. Though no guarantees can be made that you will be varicose vein free forever, most patients are thrilled that they treated their veins and wish they had done it earlier. With the newer treatment methods there is less down time, less complications, less scarring and very little recurrence compared to conventional vein stripping and surgery.

Charity begins at home for the Hallandale Beach PAL during the holiday season
* FOR PHOTOS OF THE EVENT, SEE PAGE 4B It is the holiday season. A time when we give thanks for what we are blessed with provide hope and blessings for those less fortunate than ourselves. Charity begins at home and one needs to look no further than the altruism of the Hallandale Beach Police Department and the Police Athletic League who are gearing up for the 8th annual Shop With A Cop at Walmart where 125 deserving boys and girls from within the community have been carefully chosen to receive a $100 gift card and stroll the aisles of our local Walmart with a police officer or other civic leader selecting presents for themselves and their family. SGT. Ricky Buoni has been a catalyst for this project the past three years since attached to the community involvement unit and canvasses the community seeking donations from local merchants. He credits Mardi Gras and Gulfstream as ardent supporters as well as names like Harry Escandon from AAAA Crosstown Towing, Dr. Joseph A. Amunategui II, David from Tel Aviv Texaco, the Advocacy Law Firm and Steve Cummings from the SunTimes who proudly serves on the Board of Directors for the Hallandale Beach Police Athletic League. Buoni is a police officer who pours his heart into the job as he coaches football and baseball in the P.A.L, but exemplifies leadership to his group by example as he can always be seen setting up concessions at an event, collecting turkeys for distribution at Thanksgiving and delivering them to the schools. He coordinated two recent fundraisers for Shop With A Cop including a SOLD OUT 64 person bowling tournament at Holiday Lanes in Hallandale Beach where a team from the Miami Marlins marketing office donated $2,500 and gave out souvenirs and later that day arranged a flag football game between the police and the teachers where attendees watched some high caliber play. Buoni is just one of the many local police officers from Hallandale Beach who are vigilant for children’s safety and positive development. The tradition of gift giving from the Hallandale Beach Police dates back to 1993 when the venerable Chief Thomas Magill worked with now retired Police Officer Martin Shorkey collecting gifts and wrapping them at the Hallandale Elementary School(now named Gulfstream Middle) and sending them out to needy children in our community. Shorkey was my mentor in community service and he was an icon in youth programming as he served
as the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Officer for seven years and was revered by his students and adults. Hallandale Beach Police Major Ken Cowley who should receive a lot of credit for his fundraising efforts in making the annual PAL Comedy show immensely successful as well as his untiring efforts contributing to every PAL event including fostering a relationship with Walmart that began the first “Shop with A Cop” in 2005. Cowley explains that Walmart had been donating underwear, shirts, sock and shoes to the Hallandale Beach community through the police
department and as the needs of the children expanded, Cowley approached Walmart management about joining forces at Christmas time and they readily agreed. Walmart has been donating approximately $5,000 to the event as they are a very generous community minded organization. Hometown Buffet has been the venue where the children gather for a complimentary breakfast before shopping. The children chosen to shop are provided by the Hallandale Elementary School and Gulfstream Middle and identified as the neediest. Also, Jill Fogel who works as the victims advocate at the Hallandale Beach Police Department identifies children who may victims of serious crimes or may be in a family afflicted. You can’t mention the success of the Hallandale Beach Police Athletic League without mentioning the two full time employees Jonathan Carrillo and Ken Moseley. Jonathan assumes the role of Pro-
gram Director and Ken works as his assistant. With 1,400 boys and girls participating in basketball, baseball, football, cheerleading, track and field, soccer, bowling and boxing, these gentlemen are simply indefatigable. The Police Athletic League is actually a separate entity from the police department and operates with a grant from the state forfeiture fund, but raises money from signature events such as the PAL Comedy Show, the antique show, the 5K and 10K run at Gulfstream and their increasingly profitable annual poker tournament hosted by Mardi Gras. The Hallandale Beach Police Department and the Police Athletic League are the perfect example of two organizations working together to achieve a common goal providing for our children. Happy holidays and make sure that you thank the men and women wearing the blue uniforms that provide for your safety and protect
your children on a daily basis.

PATIENT TESTIMONIALS "After searching for a caring, compassionate, conscientious, and competent dentist I finally found Elite Dental Center. Not only has Dr. Richard Silver continually provided state of the art treatment but he responds promptly to emergency situations with phone calls as well as with follow-up appointments. Dr. Silver is unique among dentists. He really cares about his patients, taking time to fully explain all the treatment procedures that are to be performed in an easily understandable way. If all dentists were like Dr. Silver there would be no dental phobia in America an appreciably less visits to the dentist," says Hugh B. "Dr. Silver is just great. A friend recommended him to me, and it took only one appointment for me to switch to him from my old dentist. He did an outstanding job filling a cavity my old dentist had done a terrible job on. And he did what's certainly the best cleaning job I've had in years. In all, he's extremely thorough, meticulous, careful, and knowledgeable. On top of that, he's a super nice guy -- funny and easy going (yet very professional). The staff is just as nice and helpful. I highly recommend him,” says Raul S. "Dr. Silver is efficient and runs on time. I really appreciate that of him. I also don't have to wait a long time to get an appointment either. His staff is courteous and Dr. Silver cares about patients and dentistry," says Patricia D.

Brushing with it or buying toothpaste with baking soda will decrease gum bleeding and tartar deposits. Art and Culture Center of Hollywood’s 2013 Family Performance Series Shakes Up the Stage With New Acts
Lake Worth-based comedy improv troupe Actors With a Clue kicks off the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood's Family Performance Series on Jan. 12.
HOLLYWOOD - The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood’s Family Performance Series returns to the Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center on Jan. 12 with a theater schedule featuring new acts in improv, puppetry, contemporary dance, and classical music. Targeted to youth ages 4 to 12 years old, these free shows include an interactive, educational component involving children and the artists. The series is staged monthly at 2 p.m. on Saturdays from January through May 2013 at the 500seat theater, located at 1770 Monroe St., Hollywood. The Lake Worth-based comedy improv troupe Actors With a Clue kicks off the series on Jan. 12 with a debut performance of “Hooray for HollyWeird,” an uproarious murder mystery that spoofs Hollywood stars. The show is performed in an interactive whodone-it format, keeping the whole family on the edge of their seats as the story unfolds. As an added delight, it is up to the audience to help solve the mysterious murder. In addition to rollicking improv, the theater welcomes on Feb. 2 South Florida’s the Puppet Network Presenting: “Dog,” a tale, co-created by renowned artist Pablo Cano and puppet maestro Jim Hammond. Told through the art of shadow puppets, this story follows a heroine who wanders through modern art in pursuit of her beloved, squeaky red ball. Also new to the series is Tampa’s vibrant dance collective Moving Current. Sliding into town on March 23, this troupe will interact with the audience and ask attendees for choreography direction, creating a truly unique and engaging experience. A discussion with Artistic Director Cynthia Hennessy will follow the show. On April 6, Florida Youth Orchestra (FYO) is back with a classical music showcase from the Children’s Concert Series featuring a talented cast of youth ages 5 to 18 whose whimsical performance will enchant children of all ages. In FYO’s “Play Pen,” audience members will enjoy playing instruments after the show. For one afternoon only on May 18, Just the Funny Improvisation Troupe will give a hilarious performance in which the actors will take suggestions from the audience to create original routines. This interactive family-friendly comedy act is sure to delight all ages. The Family Performance Series helps children build essential learning skills in cultural studies, history, language arts, math, and science. This series is the only high-quality theatrical performance of its kind geared to families in southeast Broward County. The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood presents contemporary gallery exhibitions, live stage performances and high-quality education programs for adults and children. The Center fosters a creative environment where new and challenging work can flourish through programs that reflect the highest standards of artistry and diversity. to be a part of a traditional community holiday celebration and selected Hollywood’s Candy Cane parade to highlight. The shows SuperFan, Candace Brooks, was dressed in a Mrs. Claus suite and perched aboard a convertible classic car. The parade began on the Broadwalk at Scott Street and headed south to Harrison Street. Imaginative floats, marching bands and creative displays from civic, nonprofit and children’s groups greeted the crowds tossing out thousands of candy canes and starlite mints. The Flashettes baton troupe dazzled the crowd with their high flying baton tosses and dance routines, while the Mahi Shriners clowns delighted the children who lined the Broadwalk. Members of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital who are involved in the upcoming Tour de Broward fundraiser to benefit the hospital’s cardiac center also participated in the parade hoping to spread the word about their upcoming bike ride. “To have a holiday tradition that’s been going strong for more than 50 years is really an accomplishment,” says Mayor Peter Bober, “It’s great to see people who remember being in the parade as children, now bringing their children to enjoy this holiday tradition.” Raelin Storey is the Public Affairs & Marketing Director for the City of Hollywood.

ACQUO 124 RISTORANTE ITALIANO Lives up to Its Zagat Rating
By Suzanne Wallace Sun Times Are you looking for a romantic dining experience, a place with a warm and inviting ambiance, great service, mouth-watering food, entertainment? Maybe you have out-of-town guests, or just want a wonderful meal in a relaxing atmosphere with impeccable service. Perhaps you and your friends are looking for a happy hour with an incredible bar menu, great cocktails, entertainment and congenial people who love meeting there. Acquo 124 fits all those descriptions and more. The first thing you will notice upon entering is the inviting ambiance. The Mediterranean decor gives you the feeling of dining in Italy. Owner, Sal Greco, insists on using only the freshest ingredients. Long Island wild clams are used in their clam dishes and their seafood is delivered fresh daily. And the bread....the best! Mr. Greco also owns Cusano’s Bakery, an over 100 year old family owned and operated bakery that delivers the Tuscan style bread fresh everyday!
SPECIALS OF THE NIGHT ARE TRULY SPECIAL! Acquo 124’s Dinner Menu and Specials of the Night consists of a variety of House Specialties, Signature Dishes and old favorites. There’s an extensive Antipasti Menu...Calamari Fritti (Lightly fried to a golden brown served with fresh marinara sauce), Calamari Arrabiata (fried or sautéed, served in a cherry pepper and garlic marinara sauce) and many other wonderful appetizers including their Signature Dishes, Baked Clams Oreganata (Long Island wild clams topped with their seasoned homemade bread crumbs, fresh garlic and parsley), Zuppa D’Cozze (Fresh Mediterranean mussels
sautéed with fresh garlic, herbs and extra virgin olive oil), or maybe you love mushrooms. In that case order the Spedino “Acquolina” (Slices of fresh Toscana bread, layered with fresh mozzarella, porcini mushrooms, and anchovies in a light cream sauce). For your Secondi (Main Course) Diners travel miles for the Osso Bucco (Center cut veal shank, served over risotto Milanese in a rich ragu sauce). How about one of their Signature Pasta dishes The “Old Country” Pasta (Homemade Italian sausage, broccoli di rabe, fresh garlic, extra virgin olive oil over your choice of pasta), Frutti Di Mari (Long Island wild Clams, mussels, calamari, scungilli, shrimp, fresh garlic, olive oil and fresh tomatoes over linguini), Fileto Di Salmon Alla Padela (Fresh Scottish salmon filet, sautéed with garlic, olive oil, white wine and basil served over a bed of grilled vegetables) or Marechiara (Long Island wild top neck clams and shrimp chopped with fresh garlic and fresh plum tomatoes), Scaloppine Di Vitelo Franchese (Veal medallions, sautéed in a white wine lemon butter sauce, and fresh parsley) or one of many other mouth-watering dishes. Are you hungry yet? The Zagat rated restaurant serves their dishes in two sizes the Half which is a large single serving and Family Style which will feed 2 to 4 which makes it easy to share various dishes. It’s a great way for you and
your friends to sample several items on the menu. The Family Style portions are great for take-out too. Why bother to cook when you can pick-up a gourmet Italian meal to take home. BAR BITE MENU IS IMPRESSIVE On a recent visit, my friend and I sat at the bar on a Thursday evening and ordered from their Bar Bite menu. Terry, the very knowledgeable barmaid suggested we try the Mediterranean Cozzie first. I can only say I have never tasted better mussels anywhere. Fresh Mediterranean mussels roasted in an iron skillet, tossed with extra virgin olive oil, kosher salt and fresh lemon juice. They were good-sized, plump mussels (which worried me because of the size, I expected them to be chewy) but they were so tender they almost melted in our mouths. Next we tried the Jumbo Meatball served with Ricotta and Toast Points, and then the New York Style Pizza with a thin, crispy baked crust topped with homemade marinara, fresh mozzarella, imported Romano and fresh basil. Everything was delicious! It was a congenial atmosphere with everyone praising their food and we enjoyed a fun conversation with a former Jockey’s Agent and his wife. Starting at 7:00 PM we were entertained by the wonderful keyboards and voice of Giuseppe Viola who entertains you with classic and pop songs, Sinatra
and even Arias from Opera. Giuseppe is there Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. Happy Hour is celebrated only at the bar and is All Night Sunday through Thursday. Friday and Saturday 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM. You can order from the Bar Bites Menu Every Night from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM. During Happy Hour, House wine and well drinks are $5.00 and Martinis $7.00.

Broward Center presents Broadway’s amazing musical comedy ‘Sister Act’
Based on the 1992 film of the same name, “Sister Act,” tells the story of aspiring disco diva Deloris Van Cartier. Trying to work her way to the top in 1970' s Philadelphia, Deloris falls in love with a very tough-and very married -gangster boyfriend named Curtis and when Deloris witnesses him commit a murder she ends up hiding on police orders in a convent whose parish has fallen on hard times. Although the glamour-free lifestyle doesn’t agree with her, Deloris finds her calling and while working with the choir, she discovers how the other nuns got their calling from the Lord. She breathes new life into the dusty convent while discovering a sisterhood she’s never had before. The show-stopping Deloris is the heart and soul of this feel-good musical. Her glamorous lifestyle and fabulousness keep everyone rooting for her through her journey, at the convent, in addition to her run-ins with the Mother Superior and her inspirational choir music, all the while evading her boyfriend and the trio of singing gangsters, hot on her tail, who tell the rest of the goons, they won’t stop until they find and kill Deloris. Meanwhile, news of the choir soon spreads with photographers and news reporters, wanting the story of this wonderful nontraditional choir. Modern Broadway

SPOTLIGHT ON HOLLYWOOD
Taste, sound and culture of Spain coming to Downtown Hollywood Mr. Carmona was born into a family of musicians going back at least five generations. His father and uncle were flamenco guitarists Juan and Pepe Habichuela.
HOLLYWOOD - Visit four exhibitions at the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood for free on Sunday, Dec. 16, the Center’s monthly Free Admission Day. From noon to 4 p.m., guests will have the opportunity to view “Elisabeth Condon: The Seven Seas,” “Rosemarie Chiarlone and Susan Weiner: Obstruction,” “Antonia Wright and Ruben Millares: Love on an Escalator,” and “Milree Hughes and Peter Boyd McLean: Lummox.” In her new painting and drawing exhibition, Elisabeth Condon introduces the 1980s Los Angeles nightclub scene as a metaphor for personal and social transformation. Named after an early 1980s Polynesianthemed bar in L.A., “The Seven Seas” is comprised of 16 vellum drawings, two scroll paintings, and other discrete paintings that merge the architecture, décor, fashion, and palette of the city’s nightclubs from 1974 to 1981. “Obstruction” is a collaborative effort of visual artist Rosemarie Chiarlone and poet Susan Weiner that investigates women’s struggle for authenticity through a variety of formats, combining photography, poetry, and book art. In “Love on an Escalator,” artists Antonia Wright and Ruben Millares kiss in public in a video work in which the audience encounters the artists. They comment, laugh, look, don’t look, look away uncomfortably, and look again. The kiss is a minimalist performance that explores the connection between art and the ordinary to create something extraordinary. “Lummox” presents a selection of drawings by artist Millree Hughes and a related film by Peter Boyd McLean. The drawings are of the Lummoxes, glam rock-loving hooligans that came on holiday to the little resort village of Towyn, North Wales, where Hughes grew up. The band was formed to play during Art Basel Miami Beach in 2005 and McLean’s film is a mocumentary of the show. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday, 12 to 4 p.m. Free parking is available at the Center, which is located at 1650 Harrison St. For more information on these exhibitions or Free Admission Day, please call 954.921.3274 or visit ArtandCultureCenter.org.

Roni Mualem, the new owner of Blue Star Taverna not only added his name but he’s also created a new menu and a music inspired decor to the popular night spot. It’s an exciting restaurant and night club located at 2221 North Federal Highway (two blocks south of Sheridan Street on the East side of Federal) serving Kosher Rubashkin Mediterranean cuisine made with the freshest, highest quality ingredients. The large dining room seats 150 guests at tables topped by crisp white cloths. Musical Instruments are framed around the walls, several guitars and stringed instruments from around the world, some drums and tambourines most signed by famous International musicians. The decor reflects Roni’s musical background and collection of musical memorabilia. He is a singer and musician. In fact Roni has worn many hats and still does...he’s the owner, chef, and joins the entertainers on the stage. His recipes are featured on the menu with several of his signature dishes. Roni’s famous Kabobs are marinated in various fruit juices and grilled on a hardwood charcoal grill. His chicken wings done dry with spices on the grill are mouth-watering. Mediterranean and Middle East dishes along with several Indian dishes will introduce some guests to new tastes, while others will delight in the opportunity to again, eat some of their country’s cuisine. You can pick on a hot or cold appetizer while waiting for your meal. Roni’s Hummus is really tasty. Maybe you would like to try the Baba Ghanoush (eggplant is the main ingredient) or Sambousak (a vegetarian empanada), or the Grilled
Sweet Potato. Then for dinner you might like to order an Indian dish of Chicken or Lamb Curry (Mild or Spicy), Chicken Tandoori (Mild or Spicy), or one of Roni’s Signature Kebab dishes prepared on a hardwood charcoal grill and there’s 6 different kinds of rice to give the best flavor to each dish. The Grilled Tilapia Iraqi Style is made with Tomatoes, Onions, and a Special Sauce. Roni’s Famous Salmon in Special Sauce is so exquisite he suggests you call in advance to order as it takes about an hour to prepare. You will be served fresh, alkaline water with your meal and there’s Baklava or Kunafa for dessert. Roni is featuring a Grand Opening Dinner for Two consisting of a Mixed Grill Dinner for two, featuring Kebabs, grilled tomatoes and hot peppers on a bed of rice, appetizers and salad and a bottle of wine all for $49.00. Roni’s Blue Star Taverna is open 6days a week (closed on Fridays) 5:00 PM until when ever the party is over or before 4:00 AM. Tuesday night is Ladies Night with a DJ and free drinks for the ladies from 10:00 PM to Midnight. There’s a lovely curved bar for seating and a raised stage in a corner. Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays there’s live music starting around 9:00 PM, provided by Roni and various International Stars. INTRODUCING THE WELLCO HEALTH AND WELLNESS CENTER AVOID SURGERY AND END PAIN If you have been told you need surgery or have chronic pain, we can help! Read below – to learn about a new, noninvasive neurological soft tissue medicine treatment used by professional athletes, that is now available to the general public. Magnetic Fields, which are widely used these days to improve circulation and cell metabolism. The body can become accustomed to nonmoving (or static) magnetic fields, which are generally unable to deeply penetrate the body. A pulsed electromagnetic field, however, is quite dynamic, is able to penetrate all the way through the body, and creates a cascade of effects within the body. The MAP PEMF Therapy uses moving magnets creating an energy wave
which changes the way your body copes with pain. The electrical magnets affect the nerve cells which are electrical cells and the magnetic fields affect how the nerves fire and quiet them down without using drugs increasing circulation in the area and aid the healing. Inside the MAP there are electrical coils, and when electricity passes through there it creates a magnetic field that moves through the body whispering at 75 trillion cells in your body going deep into
your body where sports creams and heating pads could never reach such as your spine. The magnetic field turns on activating ions and charged particles bringing in nutrients influencing things like blood cell supply opening up blood cells. You don’t just feel better you are better. The cost is far less than surgery, and patients avoid the long recovery times and possible side effects associated with surgery.

Avoid Pain and Joint Replacement Surgery With Revolutionary Pro Biofeedback MicroCurrent Treatment - No Drugs, No Surgery, No Pain Patient Benefits: • Greatly Speed the healing process • Reduce or eradicate Chronic and Acute Pain • Chronic and Acute Low Back, Hip, Knee and Neck Pain or deficiencies • Avoid Joint Replacement Surgery • Orthopedic Injuries • Fibromyalgia • Myofascial Pain • Tendon and Ligament repair • Reduces swelling and inflammation • Releases muscle trigger points • Improves soft tissue regeneration Electro Muscle Stimulation changes muscle tissue, softens or eradicates scar tissue, and increases circulation with the effect of removing long stored waste products and increasing cellular metabolism. The Pro Biofeedback MicroCurrent Technology uses micro impulses, which induce neuropeptides secretion by primarily C nerve fibers that have profound and wideranging effects, triggering complex regulative chains and cascades. Multiple biochemical pathways utilizing many types of neuro-mediators, hormones, and cytokines are involved. Although peptide half-life in body fluids is relatively short, other mediators in the cascades survive for many hours. Some regulatory peptides act on genomic activity to alter gene expression and change biochemical synthesis. Our device’s electrical signals can reprogram tissues locked into chronic vegetative and dysfunctional states by inducing bolus synthesis of regulatory peptides (RP). On a neurological level, widely dispersed un-meylienated C-fibers compromising 85 percent of all nerve fibers are effected locally by the Pro Biofeedback MicroCurrent Technology signal. C-fibers are responsible for slow diffuse pain signaling and are also neuro-secretory. Neuropeptides (NPs) are secreted into the surrounding tissue milieu by their exocytosis through vesicle membrane fusion with the cell membrane similar to neuro-transmitter secretion. The Pro Biofeedback MicroCurrent Technology impulses also are relayed through afferent neural pathways to the CNS and give rise to various 1) Segmental spinal reflexes by efferent signals sent from the cord to organs associated with that segment or back to the local tissue receiving the impulse. 2) Systemic reactions such as endorphin induction by efferent signals descending from the cortical and subcortical areas of the brain i.e. pain reduction. The Pro Biofeedback MicroCurrent Technology impulses have a direct effect on blood perfusion. Clinically observable and well-defined increases in tissue perfusion at the treated areas are due to neuropeptide-induced vasodilatation, particularly Substance P. A combination of device-induced axon reflexes also releases other vaso-active substances such as kinins, prostaglandins, cytokines, and nitric oxide. The end result is that blood flow to a treated area is significantly increased. Other neuropeptides and endocrine secretions released by device’s impulses mediate inflammation. Complement fixation and tissue injuries due to immune aggression are suppressed, and cellular immunity is enhanced by macrophage proliferation, activation, chemotaxis, and clearance of extracellular debris. The Pro Biofeedback MicroCurrent Technology has redefined existing technology with novel waveforms, unique circuitry, and clean signaling. Signaling is focused and intensified for narrow applications or is expanded with unique signaling combinations and frequency ranges for increased therapeutic flexibility. Compared with the earlier Russian electro-stimulation devices, The Pro Biofeedback MicroCurrent Technology generates clean and more precisely defined wave forms and possesses both newer (patent pending) settings that expand clinical versatility and vastly improved operational reliability. The Pro Bio-feedback technology is proven to be convenient, safe, and effective and has been cleared by the FDA and other governing bodies for pain relief. If you are sick and tired of dealing with the pain, range of motion limitations take advantage of the opportunity you have and contact Wellco Wellness for more information. How to get a discount on expensive health care prescriptions
(BPT) - After Carol Vanderploeg's family experienced a doublejob loss last spring; she worried about affording the $1,300 average monthly cost of her husband's epilepsy prescriptions. The couple only had enough pills to last a few months when they moved to Augusta, Ga., in search of new jobs. Even after finding another job at Delta Air Lines, the potentially high refill cost kept Vanderploeg apprehensive. "The thought of what it was going to cost us was overwhelming," she says. Vanderploeg is not alone. In this struggling economy, many Americans face the painful choice of filling a prescription or eating or paying for housing. Forty-eight million Americans did not fill a prescription due to cost in 2010, according to a report released by the non-profit Commonwealth Fund. Not taking medication as prescribed leads to negative health consequences for individuals and higher costs for everyone, says Sharon Galzarano, a Washington, D.C.-based pharmacist of 20 years.
"Patients can end up hospitalized, or their medical condition can worsen because they did not take their medication as their health care provider directed," Galzarano says. "This is especially important for people with chronic medical conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure." The most cost- effective way to manage your health is to develop a routine of consistently adhering to your medication regimen, Galzarano says. Good habits like these help prevent long-term complications such as blindness in people with diabetes or a stroke in patients with heart dis-
ease, she says. "Taking medication as directed could prevent emergency room visits and hospital admissions, which result in significant out- ofpocket costs for patients, as well as the health care system," Galzarano adds. Spending a dollar on high-blood pressure medication saves the community $10 by eliminating the need for additional hospitalizations, tests, operations and other interventions, according to CVS Caremark. Likewise, per-dollar savings for congestive heart patients were $8, nearly $7 for diabetes patients and around $3 for cho-
Avoid Flu, Stick to Winter-Wellness Routine
(NewsUSA) - Most of us can't survive the winter without falling prey to at least one virus, infection or zealous set of cold germs. The phrase "winter wellness" sometimes seems like an oxymoron. After all, staying indoors in a closed air system makes people more susceptible to certain germs. Winter's affection for cold, dry air means germs will stay airborne longer. Just like adding layers of hats and scarves, we must add layers of immune support to bolster our defenses. For many families, the flu vaccine is a viable option, but don't take any chances. Fortify your body's immune system by making smart dietary choices, too. To keep your family healthy through the winter cold/flu season, use the following advice to keep the sniffles at bay. KEEP VITAMINS, MINERALS AND SUPPLEMENTS ON HAND In addition to vitamin C, zinc, echinacea and fish oil are all proven to strengthen immunity. If natural herbs and roots aren't cutting it, use reliable flu medicine like products from Rexall. For over 100 years, Rexall products have been working to keep families healthy during cold/flu season. Rexall products are available at more than 10,000 Dollar General locations, making them affordable to all kinds of families. Learn more at www.dollargeneral.com.
lesterol patients. To be sure, the entire health care system pays when consumers decide not to take their medications as prescribed. For example, the New England Health Care Institute reported in 2009 that patients who did not take their medicine properly cost the system an additional $290 billion annually. RELIEVING THE BURDEN Luckily, Vanderploeg's story had a happy ending. By using a FamilyWize Prescription Drug Discount Card, she brought down the cost of her husband's 180pill, three-prescription order to $146, nearly an 89 percent reduction. She's just one of 5 million Americans who saved more than $430
million using the discount card. People who used the card to purchase diabetes and heart disease medicines also saved $1.2 billion in related health care costs. "FamilyWize makes it possible for our neighbors who are struggling, many of them older folks, to buy both the medicine they need plus pay for necessities like food, utilities and clothing," says Dennis Carmen, president and CEO of the United Way of Greater Plymouth County, Mass. "To help reduce the cost of prescription drugs, a prescription drug discount card is now available at no cost to patients; there are no age restrictions or income requirements to access the card," says Dan Barnes, FamilyWize CEO. Sign up for a free FamilyWize Prescription Drug Discount Card by contacting your local United Way, visiting www.familywize.org or texting "Family" to
700700 to have an electronic card sent to your phone. Anyone can get the card, which works like a coupon to fill all FDA-approved medications at more than 63,000-participating pharmacies, including Walgreens, Rite Aid, CVS, Walmart, Target, Kmart, Safeway, Kroger, Albertson's, Publix, Stop & Shop, SUPERVALU, Ahold, Costco and Sam's Club. Card users save money eight out of 10 times. On average, people will shave more than 35 percent, roughly $20, off the retail cost of each prescription. However, savings can be much higher, especially if card users are buying generic medications. This month, Vanderploeg saved $1,154 on her husband's medicine. That's a $13,848 year-end savings if his prescriptions stay the same. "The peace of mind emotionally and financially has been a life saver," she says.

Be extra diligent about the basics -- i.e., cover your mouth when sneezing or coughing, and carefully wash your hands often. Remember, the more tired or worn out you feel, the longer your immune system will take to respond. So, get plenty of sleep and drink lots of water.

WHAT YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT CHOLESTEROL Many Americans surveyed are unaware of the key risk factors associated with atherosclerosis
(BPT) - If you’re like 34 percent of American adults surveyed,* you may know your specific cholesterol numbers, but you may not know the significance of these numbers if you have high cholesterol. A survey conducted by AstraZeneca of more than 1000 American adults revealed that 63 percent of adults have heard of atherosclerosis, a progressive disease where plaque builds up in the arteries slowly over time. Adults with high cholesterol and additional risk factors such as obesity, smoking, high
blood pressure, diabetes, or family history of early heart disease may be at increased risk for plaque buildup in their arteries. Importantly, the survey, sponsored by AstraZeneca, revealed that not all American adults recognize these as risk factors. Approximately 50 percent of those surveyed recognized all of these as risk factors; 40 percent identified only high cholesterol as a potential risk factor; 26 percent selected only family history of early heart disease; 22 percent knew smoking was a risk factor; 20 percent
Living with a Perfectionist can be Difficult
Dr. Ron, my husband is a perfectionist in everything he does. He’s really a good man, and I love him dearly, but if things aren’t done “perfectly” the way he sees fit, he begins to lecture about the need to always do things “the right way”. Sometimes I don’t always want to do things perfectly. Is there something wrong with the way I’m thinking?….. F.T. Hollywood Not in my imperfect mind! Having a mate who does not leave his perfectionist demands at the office can destroy a relationship. It can evoke feelings of anger & anxiety from the ones they love most and chip away at their self-esteem. The problem with perfectionist people is not their strive to be perfect, but the demands they put on everyone else.. Contemplating “perfection” has been at the core of one of thinking man’s greatest philosophical arguements, and can be observed as far back as the ancient Greek era.. The Greek philosopher Plato believed that there is an “absolute” or “ideal” state of being for everything that exists. For Plato, there was the perfect ideal of man, the perfect ideal of woman, of courage, beauty, trees, government, etc. Considered his greatest work, Plato wrote “The Republic”, a book that outlines what the perfect society should be like. Plato was fanatic about his beliefs… Just think what this fella must have been like to live with! … Other Greek philosophers, however, disagreed with Plato, and challenged his concept of perfection. They maintained that the pursuit of perfection was folly, as it is a state of being that is unattainable; and therefore, does not exist. They argued that time & movement, continually change the “illusion” of perfection… Perfectionist thinking does have a positive side. It can be a major asset for ones accomplishments in work & career, but best should be left at the office after the working day is done. Loved ones & friends are not employees, or co-workers, and a perfectionist should always remember that if he or she cares about maintaining healthy & loving relationships, the imperfection of others must be tolerated…. Tell your husband, that if he truly wants to be the “perfect” mate, he should stop being so perfect! That’ll make him think…He could probably use a little therapy, as most perfectionists do. Believe me, if he doesn’t get some.., you’ll be needing it!.. Good Luck, and Happy Holidays to all Dr. Ron Dr. Ron is in private practice in Hallandale Florida,…. recognized only high blood pressure; and 12 percent selected diabetes as the only risk factor for atherosclerosis. For adults at increased risk for plaque buildup, it is even more important to lower high cholesterol. A cholesterol management plan to help patients reach their cholesterol goals will likely begin with lifestyle changes, which can include quitting smoking, eating healthy foods and exercising more often. However, for some people, diet and exercise alone may not be enough to lower high cholesterol, so it is important that they talk with their health care providers about their treatment options. A doctor may recommend CRESTOR® (rosuvastatin calcium) when diet and exercise alone are not enough. Along with diet, CRESTOR was proven in adults to lower bad cholesterol by up to 52 percent (at the 10-mg dose vs 7 percent with placebo). People may see results for lowering high cholesterol as soon as 2-4 weeks after starting CRESTOR (results may vary). In adults, CRESTOR, along with diet, is also FDA approved to slow plaque buildup in arteries as part of a treatment plan to lower cholesterol to goal. CRESTOR is not right for everyone, including anyone who is nursing, pregnant or may become pregnant, has liver problems, or has had an allergic reaction to CRESTOR. Please see additional Important Safety Information below. *Based on an online survey among a nationwide cross-section of 1000 US adults aged 18 and older conducted on May 19-23, 2011. 48 percent of the survey responders were males. The percent responders across age groups: 32 percent 1834 years, 39 percent 35-54 years, and 29 percent 55+ years. About CRESTOR® (rosuvastatin cal-
cium) Tablets When diet and exercise alone aren't enough, adding CRESTOR can help. In adults, CRESTOR is prescribed along with diet to lower high cholesterol, and to slow the buildup of plaque in arteries as part of a treatment plan to lower cholesterol to goal. Important Safety Information about CRESTOR® (rosuvastatin calcium) Tablets CRESTOR is not right for everyone. Do not take CRESTOR if you are nursing, pregnant or may become pregnant; have liver problems; or have had an allergic reaction to CRESTOR. Your doctor should do blood tests to check your liver before starting treatment and if you have symptoms of liver problems while taking CRESTOR. Call your doctor right away if you have unexplained muscle pain or weakness, especially with fever; have muscle problems that do not go away even after your doctor told you to stop taking CRESTOR; feel unusually tired; or have loss of appetite, upper belly pain, dark urine, or yellowing of skin or eyes. These could be signs of rare but serious side effects. Elevated blood sugar levels have been reported with statins, including CRESTOR. The
(NewsUSA) - For people with diabetes, taking a multivitamin every day can mean much more than a little protection against the common cold. Research is finding that multivitamins can be the first line of defense against many different types of infections, including respiratory infections and influenza. "Once a person with diabetes gets an infection, it's much harder for them to get rid of it, and it can lead to dire consequences, even death," says Registered and Certified Dietitian-Nutritionist Debra Spector. "And since some diabetic patients don't normally respond well to treatment, prevention is key." Taking a special diabetes multivitamin -- usually found in the diabetes section of a drugstore, not the vitamin section -- allows a diabetic person to be proactive with their health, and avoid nutrient deficiencies that can lead to problems. The year-long study among 130 patients, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, found that the incidence of infection was much lower among diabetics who took a multivitamin versus those who did not. Infection occurred in only 17 percent of diabetic patients who took a multivitamin versus the 93 percent who took a placebo. The study also found that regular multivitamin usage reduced the rate of minor urinary tract and gastrointestinal infections in people with diabetes. Because of the nature of the disease, it's not uncommon for diabetics to experience nutrient deficiencies. Diabetes medications and frequent urination can lead to the loss of vital nutrients that protect the body. "Since there are many health risks that can result from vitamin and mineral deficiencies, I encourage my diabetic patients to find a multivitamin supplement with more potent levels of important nutrients to meet their needs," says Spector. "It should contain Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA), an important nutrient that most 'regular' multivitamins do not have. I like Multi-betic Diabetes Multi-Vitamin since it has 23 important nutrients, including ALA, designed to help maintain healthy blood sugar levels, support vision and promote nerve function."

INSIDE: SUN TIMES HOLIDAY RECIPES
Island Resort Living at. . . . . .
Discover a hidden gem in Hollywood that offers
seniors a wonderful lifestyle, peace of mind, and compassionate care; all within a serene, tropical environment. Since fresh air and outdoor living can have a beneficial effect on residents and their health, Azalea Gardens, a Timeless Life Care community, was designed and is meticulously maintained to produce an atmosphere that is an oasis for the senses. The gorgeous botanical garden is a sight to behold, with rainbow-hued colors and lovely fragrances that fill the air. A walking path winds through a lush landscape with a variety of fruit trees, inviting a peaceful stroll. Magnificently spacious gazebos with benches offer shade and comfort, as an overhead fan creates a refreshing breeze. Residents and visitors can enjoy the serenity of a duck pond, as well as the beautiful Japanese koi displaying amazing shades of gold, orange and black as they gently swim through the pristine waters. Nearby fountains, featuring gently trickling water, create a soothing ambiance, as a myriad of butterflies adds to the beautiful atmosphere. The earth-friendly environment extends to the residences, which creates a lovely sense of flow connecting each suite to the stunning gardens. Just outside their doors, residents, their friends and family can take in views of the extraordinary surroundings from their own porches. Fully furnished rooms are available or individuals may personalize their space with their own possessions. As Director of Community Relations Chris Snider explains, “The goal of Azalea Gardens is to provide Timeless Life Care in an aging-in-place facility. We are dedicated to promoting the well-being of each resident and helping them to maintain their inde
pendence in a safe, secure environment.”
Providing a pleasurable dining experience is an im-
portant part of that commitment. Deliciously fresh ingredients are used in preparing the meals, with the menu carefully crafted by a licensed dietician. To ensure that residents’ individual dietary needs are satisfied, personalized meal plans are easily accommodated. Since a key objective of Azalea Gardens is to empower its residents, a comprehensive personal enrichment program is offered, as are opportunities to form meaningful social connections. Regularly scheduled events, activities and outings include daily exercise in the gazebo, aromatherapy, barbecues every Saturday with family and friends, live music, and other excursions. A shuttle bus takes adventures to local attractions such as Lion Country Safari, the movies and the beach for lunch. Maintaining communication between residents and their family members can provide greater peace of mind. By logging on to a private, secured website, out-of-town and local family members can access cameras positioned around the property so they may discover what their loved ones are doing each day. Onsite, a state-of-the-art computer and video camera allows residents the ability to connect with family and friends through Skype sessions. At Azalea Gardens, you will find excellent quality of care, a rich social environment, and a compassionate, caring staff, all in a beautifully serene community. For more information, call Mary Howard at 954-921-5990 to arrange a tour or visit Azaleagardens.net. Azalea Gardens Assisted Living Resort is located at 1701 Mayo Street in Hollywood.

HOLIDAY EXTRAVAGANZA Children will get an early visit from Santa Claus on Friday night, Dec. 21
Hallandale Beach children will get an early visit from Santa Claus on Friday night, Dec. 21, at the annual Holiday Extravaganza 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Foster Park, 609 NW 6th Avenue. Santa will be handing gifts to youngsters whose families pre-registered for the event. Sponsored by the Community Civic Association and the City of Hallandale Beach Parks and Recreation Department, the annual event brings together children of families in need of assistance during the holiday season. This is the first time the annual event is held in the new Foster Park Community Center. The event also will include a bounce house, face painting, balloons and plenty of food for the families at the event. Veterans treated to a holiday meal
Hallandale Beach area veterans were treated to a healthy Thanksgiving Dinner this year through the Veterans In Need Foundation (VINF) of Pompano Beach. Working with the Human Services Department at the Austin Hepburn Center and Broward Meals on Wheels, VINF served meals to veterans and families referred by the local Veterans Affairs office and area social agencies. VINF serves veterans throughout the county and uses the Hepburn center as a center for Veterans throughout the area during the holiday. In on the dinner event were: from left, Victor DeSouza, Hallandale Beach Senior Program Coordinator, Veteran Mike, Victoria Thompson, VINF Administrator, Joe Hardy, operations manager for VINF, and Veteran Patrick. Veterans in the program use first names only.
Lighting of the Menorah
Chanukah, the Festival of Lights, was celebrated at Hallandale Beach City Hall on Tuesday with the lighting of the Menorah in the lobby. Annually, the City displays a menorah and Christmas tree in the City Hall lobby to celebrate the holiday season and diversity of the City’s residents. Joining in on the celebration are, from left, Rabbi Leibel Miller, Rabbi/Cantor Yossi Lebovics, Vice Mayor Alexander Lewy, Rabbi Raphael Tennenhaus, Mayor Joy Cooper, City Commissioner Michele Lazarow, and City Commissioner Anthony Sanders.
Shop With-A-Cop Bowl-A-Thon
Hallandale Beach residents came together Saturday, Dec. 8 for the annual Police Athletic League Shop With-A-Cop BowlA-Thon at the Holiday Lanes Bowling center. The annual event raises funds to support the Shop With-A-Cop program. Shop With-A- Cop is this Saturday, Dec. 15, 10 a.m. at WalMart on East Hallandale Beach Boulevard. Each child in the program will be given a $100 gift card to shop for their family. Each child is accompanied by a police officer from Hallandale Beach or other area agencies as they scour the shelves of Wal-Mart in search of presents for family members. About 100 children, ages 5 to 13, have been selected by Hallandale Elementary School and Gulfstream Middle School to participate in the event. Kegling for the kids are, from left, Arturo O’Neil, Stephen Cummings, City Commissioner Bill Julian and Joe Kessel.

Turkey is tops for easy, everyday meals
(BPT) - At this busy time of year, it's often difficult to get a meal on the table, especially if you're multitasking between other priorities around the home. Consider including turkey burgers in your dinner menus - it's a great way to add protein and create a delicious and convenient meal without having to be tied to your kitchen for hours. Turkey isn't just for Thanksgiving anymore. It has grown from a traditional holiday staple into a year-round favorite. In addition, there are so many quick and easy-to-prepare turkey burger options at today's grocers, and creative recipes available to add flavor and style to your family meal. Temperature is everything when it comes to preparing safe and delicious turkey burgers. Cooking turkey burgers to 165 F helps you achieve the most delicious flavor and the perfect, never-dry tenderness families love, while also being important for food safety. For this reason, a meat thermometer is a necessity. Quick and convenient, this essential cooking tool provides
a simple way to prepare delicious cooked turkey. Technology has made today's meat thermometers easier to use than ever. For example, Jennie-O, a recognized leader in turkey, has teamed up with iGrill, the first app enabled wireless meat thermometer, to help home cooks and grill masters prepare tender, delicious turkey while ensuring food safety from anywhere in the home. Compatible with iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Android devices, the app takes the guesswork out of cooking turkey by helping you monitor food temperature without being glued to your grill or oven. It has a wireless range of up to 200 feet, so you can tend to other important things around the house and spend time with your family as you cook. The iGrill app is free and includes 25 delicious Jennie-O recipes for great-tasting everyday meals. It can be downloaded at the iTunes Store. The wireless meat thermometer is available for purchase at igrillinc.com. Use promo code JENNIEO for $10 off savings.
marinade for each new batch.
CHILL When storing raw poultry, set your refrigerator to 40 F or lower. Never thaw poultry at room temperature or on the counter. Thaw in the refrigerator in sealed containers and keep it no more than two to three days before cooking. Refrigerate leftovers within two hours of cooking and eat within one to two days.
FIVE EASY RULES FOR COOKING DELICIOUS TURKEY BURGERS When it comes to cooking, food safety is just as important as great taste. Here are five easy kitchen tips for cooking a delicious meal featuring JENNIE-O turkey burgers: clean, separate, cook, chill, and don't forget—enjoy!CLEAN Safety begins with a clean cooking space. Use warm, soapy water to wash anything raw turkey touches, including cutting boards, plates or serving plat-
ters, countertops and other surfaces, food thermometers, grilling utensils and - most importantly - your hands. It is not necessary to rinse poultry before cooking. In fact, rinsing poultry can spread bacteria rather than kill it. COOK Always fully cook poultry to destroy any bacteria that could cause foodborne illness. Using a meat thermometer is the most accurate way to determine when the meat is ready to enjoy. Cook poultry to at least 165 F, as measured by a meat thermometer, such as the
ENJOY Following these simple food safety rules makes it easy to achieve the best possible taste for a delicious meal the entire family will enjoy. Making some traditional Rolled Christmas Sugar Cookies
'TIS THE SEASON FOR HOLIDAY BAKING
(BPT) - The holidays are a busy season. From cooking and baking for family and friends to holiday shopping and preparing for time-honored traditions, the season will pass in a blur. Regardless, it's also the time of year when everyone has holiday cookies and extraspecial meals on their minds. While dreaming of countless delectable treats, like homemade eggnog and royal icing, there is also a risk that at-home cooks and bakers strive to avoid: salmonella. Renowned baker and author of The Cake Bible and Rose's Christmas Cookies, Rose Levy Beranbaum, uses pasteurized eggs instead of worrying about the risk of salmonella when baking her holiday treats. Beranbaum offers tips for baking this holiday season and her favorite iced sugar cookie recipe. * Prep the kitchen. Put away unnecessary items, clean off the counter or table top and make sure that all of the tools and ingredients are available to make for a smoother baking process. * Measurement is key. Unlike cooking, baking requires exact measurement. One important technique is
the spoon-and-sweep method for measuring flour, which can settle. Scoop the flour into the measuring cup, ensure it is full and sweep off the excess with a knife. * Be patient. Allow the cookie sheets to cool completely before using for the next batch to avoid flat cookies. * Think through baking times. Looking for a slightly softer, chewier cookie? Roll the dough to 1/4-inch thickness and reduce the baking time slightly * Use high quality ingredients. Products like Safest Choice Pasteurized Eggs eliminate the risk of salmonella - and they add a little fun and excitement back into the kitchen for
anyone who enjoys a quick taste of cookie batter or using eggs in raw preparations like Beranbaum's royal icing recipe. TRADITIONAL ROLLED CHRISTMAS SUGAR COOKIES 2 1/4 cups (11.25 ounces) bleached all-purposed flour 1/4 teaspoon salt 3/4 cup sugar 12 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 large Safest Choice Pasteurized Egg 1 tablespoon (finely grated) lemon zest 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract Royal Icing (recipe follows)
Soften the butter. In a mixing bowl, cream together the sugar and
butter until fluffy. Add the egg, lemon zest, and vanilla extract and beat until blended. In a small bowl, whisk together the remaining dry ingredients. On low speed, gradually add them to the butter mixture and mix until incorporated. Add water, a few drops at a time, only until the dough starts to come away from the sides of the bowl. Scrape the dough onto a sheet of plastic wrap and use the wrap, not your fingers, to press the dough together to form a thick flat disc. Wrap it well and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, preferably no longer than 3. Place 2 oven racks in the upper and lower thirds of the oven. Preheat oven to 350 F. On a lightly floured
surface, roll out the dough, covered with plastic wrap to prevent cracking, to a 1/8-inch thickness. Cut shapes using your favorite cookie cutters or freehand with a knife. With a small spatula, transfer the cookies to the prepared cookie sheets. Bake for 8 to 12 minutes or until the cookies begin to brown around the edges. For even baking, rotate the cookie sheets from top to bottom and front to back halfway through the baking period. Use a small spatula to transfer the cookies to wire racks to cool before decorating with Royal Icing, dragees, sprinkles and glittering holiday edibles. Store in an airtight container at
room temperature. ROYAL ICING 3 large Safest Choice pasteurized egg whites 4 cups (1 pound) powdered sugar
In a large mixing bowl, place the egg whites and powdered sugar and beat, preferably with the whisk beater, at low speed, until the sugar is moistened. Beat at high speed until very glossy and stiff peaks form when the beater is lifted (5 to 7 minutes). The tips of the peaks should curve slightly. If necessary, more powdered sugar may be added. Keeps for 3 days in an airtight container at room temperature.

Expert tips for busy parents who want quick, delicious and wholesome meals
(BPT) - Increasingly hectic lives make athome meal preparation more challenging than ever, but it's still important. If you feel like your family life has never been busier, you're not alone. According to a recent survey, 58 percent of parents say their life is more hectic than a year ago, and having a long to-do list can cut into their mealtime. Jenny Rosenstrach is a working mother of two and the author of "Dinner: A Love Story." Through her blog of the same name, she hears about mealtime barriers from thousands of timestrapped parents a month. Now, Rosenstrach has partnered
with Barilla to offer tips on how to put a quick, home-cooked and crowd-pleasing dinner on the table, even on the busiest of nights.
MAKE A PLAN, STOCK YOUR PANTRY A fully stocked pantry is the best way to ensure you have plenty of options come meal time. In fact, 59 percent of people say having ingredients on-hand is the most important. Make a list of essential ingredients - box of pasta, jar of pasta sauce, extra virgin olive oil, fresh vegetables and a good hunk of real Parmigiano-Reggiano - then hit the store. There's no better
strategy for making dinner happen than to be armed with everything you need.
PLEASE EVERYONE AT THE TABLE It's important not to get discouraged if you have a picky eater. -Rosenstrach suggests bringing the kids grocery shopping and letting them help select things for dinner. "They'll be more invested when it's time to sit down and eat," she says. Also, as often as possible, she tries to expose her daughters to something new - calling this "flexing their adventure muscles." A DELICIOUS HOME-COOKED
Winter Recipes are Knocking: Hello Onions
(NewsUSA) - Cooking without onions is like trying make a BLT without the tomato -- it's possible to fill the void with something else, but you'll probably feel like you're missing something. Plus, now that it's time to put on layers and nestle up to a fire, winter recipes are a'brewing, and they're full of tasty onions. Yellow onions, in particular, that are harvested during cold weather months are perfect for roasts, soups, slow-cooked dishes and other winter favorites. Specifically, yellow onions are ideal for these applications to help build flavor profiles because of their robust, savory taste. PASTA ITALIANO WITH ONION AND PORK 1 1/4 pounds pork loin sirloin chops or pork shoulder blade steaks 2 teaspoons each ground cumin and chili powder 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 medium onion (10 ounces), cut into narrow wedges 1 can (14 1/2 ounces) Italian recipe stewed tomatoes 1 package (9 ounce) fresh linguini pasta Grated Parmesan and fresh or dried minced herbs
Trim the fat from the chops or blade steaks. Trim the meat from bones, and cut into small cubes. Dust pork with cumin and oregano. Heat oil in skillet over medium-high heat. Add onions and pork and sauté until cooked through, about 8 minutes. Add tomatoes and heat. Cook linguine in boiling water about 2 minutes or as package directs. Drain and serve with pork-onion sauce on top. Sprinkle with cheese and herbs. Makes 4 servings. Find more recipes at www.onions-usa.org.
MEAL IS A SPAGHETTI STRAND AWAY There is no such thing as too many pasta shapes when you have kids. From ziti to farfalle (or bowties) to shells, ditalini, rigatoni and penne, the pasta possibilities are endless. Have some fun and let your kids choose a different shape each week. It's a task her 9-year-old takes very seriously. BE A MULTITASKING MASTER When making pasta add your fresh or frozen vegetables during the last few minutes the pasta is boiling and there you have it, one less pot to clean. While cleaning up, always make sure the leftovers go right into the lunchbox. That way, one more
thing on the to-do list is taken care of and you don't have to think about it in the morning. Visit www.Barilla.com/modernfamilycookbook to download your free copy of the cookbook filled with extra recipes and tips from Jenny, and view the results from the survey. BARILLA LEMON SPAGHETTI 1 pound Barilla Spaghetti 2 fresh lemons 2/3 cup extra virgin olive oil 2/3 cup ParmigianoReggiano cheese, freshly grated 3/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, freshly ground 1/3 cup fresh basil, chopped
Grate lemon peels and place lemon zest in a small bowl. Juice the lemons into a separate small bowl. Whisk the oil, lemon juice, cheese, salt and pepper in a large bowl and blend. Set the lemon sauce aside. Meanwhile, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the spaghetti and cook, stirring occasionally until tender but still firm to the bite, about 8 minutes. Drain, reserving 1 cup of the cooking liquid. Add the spaghetti to the lemon sauce, and toss with the basil and lemon zest. Toss the pasta with enough reserved cooking liquid, 1/4 cup at a time, to moisten. Season the pasta with more salt and pepper to taste. Transfer to bowls and serve.
