Hallandale Beach / Broward County Emergency Order The number of COVID-19 cases continues to climb, along with positivity rates. In the past week, Broward has experienced more than 1,300 new cases each day and positivity rates as high as 16.58%. Our hospitals are either at or are exceeding their bed capacity.

It is important for residents and businesses to understand the role they play in reducing these alarming statistics, by following reopening guidelines and requirements for social distancing and wearing facial coverings.

To help residents understand the magnitude of the pandemic in our community, Broward County is now posting a daily statistical dashboard (www.bro ward.org/CoronaVirus/Doc uments/Aggregate-DashboardLatest.pdf) of COVID-19 indicators (e.g. number of cases, positivity rates, hospitalizations, hospital capacities, and deaths).

Broward County has also issued Emergency Order 20-22, which implements new restrictions to help curtail large social gatherings, including house parties, street parties and other activities that are contributing to community spread of the virus: • Curfew – Effective July 17, 2020 at 11PM and until August 1, 2020, all of Broward County is under a curfew from 11PM to 5AM. Helping Dogs Cope After Self-Quarantine With most people having to self-quarantine recently, dogs are getting used to having their family home 24/7. As Florida eases COVID-19 restrictions in many areas and people get out of the house to return to work, pets around the state and country may see their daily routines of hanging out with everyone come to an end. When things do return to “normal” and everyone is able to return to work, some dogs are likely to suffer a kind of shock at the sudden separation from the family.

A survey of 5,000 U.S. pet owners found nearly 70% of respondents are concerned their pets will have new or additional anxiety when they return to work.

It’s important to prepare pets for changes in routine, especially those that are new to a home, for their well-being and harmony of the whole family.

A dog who becomes distressed when suddenly alone can become very destructive in the home which becomes very costly and distressing for the family. But more importantly, it means the dog is suffering emotionally, due to the separation. The good news is that there are ways to prevent this from occurring for both the dog and the family.

Self-Quarantine

When leaving your dog to return to work do not make a big production of leaving.

There are many medical issues that could lead to house soiling or drooling. Many breeds of dogs (such as a St. Bernard or Bloodhound) just drool; it is just something they do. As far as being excessively vocal, hound breeds are just naturally more vocal than most other breeds of dogs.

So what can families do to make it easier on their dogs when they are able to return to the office or school?

The most important thing is to develop a routine. Dogs and other animals thrive on routines.

A lot of anxiety can be relieved simply by making it possible for an animal to predict what will happen and when. Many health professionals also suggest that having a routine during quarantine is beneficial to humans as well. So everyone will win! Try to plan a routine that is as similar as possible to the one the family will maintain once returning to working outside the home. This will help maintain consistency and predictability for the dog and make the transition to the family leaving easier.

Make a Plan The key to any plan is making sure everyone knows what to do.

This goes for veteran pet owners and the owners of more than 221,000 new pets adopted or fostered since March, according to the 24Pet ShelterWatch Report. Pet owners should agree on the plan for their pets and details should be shared with children who help with care.

“Pet owners should make a plan with minimal and realistic changes to help their dogs adapt to new routines,” said veterinarian Elizabeth DeLomba, MBA, senior veterinary services consultant at VetriScience Laboratories. “Start by offering your pets belongings that make

them feel safe and comfortable and add small things that promote mental and physical stimulation.”

Practice the New Routine Ease your pet into being alone by spending short periods of time away from him or her both in and outside the home and work your way up to hours of separation.

Use practice time to get your dog or cat used to what happens before you leave for work, comfortable with a crate or other safe space and acquainted with a new toy, treat or someone who will check on him or her during the day.

Before you leave, take your pet for a walk or play at home to get energy out prior to your departure. When it is time to leave, don’t make a big deal out of leaving. Say goodbye long before you leave then leave calmly.

their dog or cat cope with any anxiety a new routine brings.

Keep Them Stimulated Don’t let your dog feel bored when home alone. Play music, keep a television on or use a white noise machine to create some constant sound. If your pet isn’t into watching television, keep him or her busy with a

treat-dispensing toy that requires some work. Or stuff a toy with peanut butter, freeze it and give it to your dog when you leave.

These ideas can help keep your pet’s mind stimulated and encourage him or her to focus on something other than being alone.

Giving your dog space Once the dog is sufficiently exercised you should now be able to begin leaving it alone for short periods of time. Decide on a space that will belong to the dog while it is alone. Set up the dog’s space to be as comfortable for the dog as possible.

Some dogs enjoy looking out a window, for others it can create a lot of stress and frustration.

Always consider any activities that may arouse or frustrate a dog that is alone, such as passing cars or pedestrians.

Neighboring animals can also create frustration for a dog that is either unable to escape from or interact with it. A dog’s time alone should be as frustrationfree as possible. A dog that becomes exasperated due to

these factors will likely develop the very behaviors a family is trying to prevent, such as destructiveness, escape attempts, and excessive vocalizations. An outdoor dog that is excessively vocal or constantly escaping can become a nuisance to neighbors and result in complaints and neighborhood conflicts.

When leaving the dog in these areas do not make a big production of leaving. Many owners will spend several minutes telling a dog over and over again that they are a ‘good boy’ and ‘I’ll be back, promise’ while lavishing lots of hugs, kisses, and pets on the dog in order to reassure it.

This often has the opposite effect on the dog. Dogs tend not to understand phrases like ‘I’ll be home at lunchtime’. They are, however, very good at recognizing and mirroring an owner’s anxiety and distress. When you do leave the dog alone a simple, slow, and relaxed shoulder scratch and a treat or toy are sufficient.

Have patience as they adjust Remember that the goal is not to isolate the dog during this time. It is simply to be sure the dog is accustomed to a routine that can be kept after the quarantine is over and will not become overly stressed once the family is no longer home all day.

If you start experiencing issues with your dog, even if it has never been an issue in the past, don’t panic. Isolation distress and separation anxiety may take a bit more work than you’re typically used to, but once in a routine everything will be ok!

Please don’t think you have to surrender your dog if they start experiencing any of these symptoms.

If a dog is typically allowed free roam of the home it is perfectly fine to continue. But a dog needs to learn they don’t need to have someone in their sights at all times. They can learn to entertain themselves. They don’t need pets every other minute and don’t need to follow a person on their heels or be attached at the hip. Preparing a pet to feel secure when alone now will benefit everyone in a family once life returns to normal.

America, You’ve Been Blacklisted McCarthyism Refashioned for a New Age

For those old enough to have lived through the McCarthy era, there is a whiff of something in the air that reeks of the heightened paranoia, finger-pointing, fear-mongering, totalitarian tactics that were hallmarks of the 1950s.

Back then, it was the government—spearheaded by Senator Joseph McCarthy and the House Un-American Activities Committee—working in tandem with private corporations and individuals to blacklist Americans suspected of being communist sympathizers.

By the time the witch hunts carried out by federal and state investigative agencies drew to a close, thousands of individuals (the vast majority of them innocent any crime whatsoever) had been accused of communist ties, investigated, subpoenaed and blacklisted. Regarded as bad risks, the accused were blacklisted, and struggled to secure employment. The witch hunt ruined careers, resulting in suicides, and tightened immigration to exclude alleged subversives.

Seventy years later, the vitriol, fear-mongering and knee-jerk intolerance associated with McCarthy’s tactics are once again being deployed in a freefor-all attack by those on both the political Left and Right against anyone who, in daring to think for themselves, subscribes to ideas or beliefs that run counter to the government’s or mainstream thought.

It doesn’t even seem to matter what the issue is anymore (racism, Confederate monuments, Donald Trump, COVID19, etc.): modern-day activists are busily tearing down monuments, demonizing historic figures, boycotting corporations for perceived political transgressions, and using their bully pulpit to terrorize the rest of the country into kowtowing to their demands.

All the while, the American police state continues to march inexorably forward. This is how fascism, which silences all dissenting views, prevails. The silence is becoming deafening.

After years of fighting in and out of the courts to keep their 87-year-old name, the NFL’s Washington Redskins have bowed to public pressure and will change their name and team logo to avoid causing offense.

The new name, not yet announced, aims to honor both the military and Native Americans.

Yet it wasn’t a heightened racial conscience that caused the Redskins to change their brand. It was the money. The team caved after its corporate sponsors including FedEx, PepsiCo, Nike and Bank of America threatened to pull their funding So much for that U.S. Supreme Court victory preventing the government from censoring trademarked names it considers distasteful or scandalous.

Who needs a government censor when the American people are already doing such a great job at censoring themselves and each other, right?

Mind you, Unanue—whose grandfather emigrated to the U.S. from Spain—also praised the Obamas when they were in office, but that kind of equanimity doesn’t carry much weight in this climate of intolerance.

Not to be outdone, the censors are also taking aim at To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about Atticus Finch, a white lawyer in the Jim Crow South who defends a black man falsely accused of rape. Sixty years after its debut, the book remains a powerful testament to moral courage in the face of racial bigotry and systemic injustice, told from the point of view of a child growing up in the South, but that’s not enough for the censors. They want to axe the book—along with The Adventures of Huckleberry

Finn—from school reading curriculums because of the presence of racial slurs that could make students feel “humiliated or marginalized.”

Never mind that the N-word makes a regular appearance in hip-hop songs. The prevailing attitude seems to be that it’s okay to use the N-word as long as the person saying the word is not white. Rapper Kendrick Lamar “would like white America to let black people exclusively have the word.”

Talk about a double standard.

This is also the overlooked part of how oppression becomes systemic: it comes about as a result of a combined effort between the populace, the corporations and the government.

McCarthyism worked the same way.

What started with Joseph McCarthy’s headline-grabbing scare tactics in the 1950s about Communist infiltrators of American society snowballed into a devastating witch hunt once corporations and the

American people caught the fever.

McCarthyism was a contagion, like the plague, spreading like wildfire among people too fearful or weak or gullible or paranoid or greedy or ambitious to denounce it for what it was: an opportunistic scare tactic engineered to make the government more powerful.

The parallels to the present movement cannot be understated.

The contagion of fear that McCarthy helped spread with the help of government agencies, corporations and the power elite is still poisoning the well, whitewashing our history, turning citizen against citizen, and stripping us of our rights.

What we desperately need is the kind of resolve embodied by Edward R. Murrow, the mostrespected newsman of his day.

On March 9, 1954, Murrow dared to speak truth to power about the damage McCarthy was inflicting on the American people.

His message remains a timely warning for our age.

We will not walk in fear, one of another. We will not be driven by fear into an age of unreason, if we dig deep in our history and our doctrine; and remember that we are not descended from fearful men. Not from men who feared to write, to speak, to associate, and to defend causes that were for the moment unpopular.

America is approaching another reckoning right now, one that will pit our commitment to freedom principles against a level of fear-mongering that is being used to wreak havoc on everything in its path.

The outcome rests, as always, with “we the people.” As Murrow said to his staff before the historic March 9 broadcast: “No one can terrorize a whole nation, unless we are all his accomplices.”

Take heed, America.

The Cleveland Indians: Heroes Get Remembered, But Legends Never Die Paul F. Petrick - Attorney in Cleveland, Ohio

As Northeast Ohio baseball fans anticipate the start of a truncated season of Cleveland Indians baseball, they are suddenly faced with the possible end of their beloved ballclub as they know it. On July 3rd, the Indians released a statement explaining how the team was “committed to engaging our community and appropriate stakeholders to determine the best path forward with regard to our team name.” The statement came after the NFL’s Washington Redskins announced a “review” of their team name, a review that quickly and predictably ended with the team bowing to corporate pressure and discontinuing their nickname and logo.

Tribe fans should be worried. It does not matter that “Indians” has never been a pejorative term for this hemisphere’s indigenous population. The argument for changing the team’s name has never been couched in logic or popular support (among any ethnic group).

Indians CEO Paul Dolan knows this. Or at least he did in January 2018 when he declared that he was “adamant” about keeping the team’s name and that both he and Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred were “not troubled” by its use. These comments were made in the context of Dolan’s decision to remove the Indians’ “Chief Wahoo” image from the team’s uniforms. Dolan is a savvy baseball executive who presides over an organization that consistently gets the most out of its roster despite the constraints of operating in a small market. He should have known that removing Chief Wahoo’s image would never satiate the team’s critics. Now Chief Wahoo is just another Indian killed off by the White Man, his death having made few happy. Sockalexis is often identified as the first person of Native American ancestry to play in Major League Baseball. When the Cleveland Naps changed their name to the Indians in 1915, the franchise reportedly did so to honor Sockalexis.

The Cleveland Indians have an obligation to prevent this as their entire franchise is dedicated to one particular Indian, Louis Sockalexis.

Sockalexis, the product of a Penobscot reservation, was a multisport athlete at Holy Cross College before becoming the first acknowledged American Indian to play major league baseball.

This occurred in 1897, a half century before Jackie Robinson ended the pro sport’s collusive ban on black ballplayers.

Enduring the same racial taunts and abuse as Robinson, Sockalexis was a sensation, dazzling fans with his hitting, running, and throwing. So indelible was the impression he made, his team (the Cleveland Spiders, a National League predecessor to Cleveland’s current American

League franchise) became informally referred to as the Indians by players and fans alike in honor of baseball’s original aboriginal. Sockalexis’ career and ultimately his life were sadly cut short by alcoholism, but as they say in the movie The Sandlot, “Heroes get remembered, but legends never die.” The legend of Louis Sockalexis survived the man and in 1915, when the Cleveland Naps needed a new name after their namesake (second baseman Napoleon Lajoie) was sold, they were officially renamed the Indians.

It has become fashionable for media cynics to cast doubt on the notion that the Indians were thus named in 1915 to honor Sockalexis.

The Sockalexis Theory deniers suggest that the team’s name was merely a result of the popularity of American Indian motifs at the time. They

cite as evidence their inability to find contemporary newspaper accounts mentioning the Sockalexis connection.

But there is a piece in the Cleveland Plain Dealer from January 18, 1915 (the day following the announced name change) recalling the phenom Sockalexis was, how the entire Spiders team came to be called the “Indians” in his honor, and how the 1915 Cleveland Indians, despite not featuring any actual American Indians, “will recall fine traditions” and “revive the memory” of Sockalexis. The inscription on Sockalexis’ grave marker concludes with “He was a talented and spectacular player and colorful in all his actions. Soon after the Cleveland team was renamed the Cleveland Indians, the name it still carries to this day.”

Changing the name of the Cleveland Indians would be the

worst decision in Cleveland baseball history since the infamous Rocky Colavito trade and the biggest betrayal of the fans by a Cleveland sports owner since Art Modell relocated the Cleveland Browns to Baltimore.

But most of all it would erase Sockalexis’ legacy and destroy a monument to a man, who with great courage, stepped up to the plate and hit a home run for racial justice. But unlike other racial trailblazers, Sockalexis is not enshrined in baseball’s Hall of Fame. The Cleveland Indians have a proud history of advancing racial equality, having been the team responsible for integrating the American League and pro baseball’s managerial ranks.

Getting Sockalexis into Cooperstown would be consistent with that tradition. Taking his legacy out of Cleveland would not.

The Pantry of Broward, serving seniors living on low, fixed incomes and grandparents raising their grandchildren, will be running the drive. Drop off locations will be in two convenient areas: Village Square Sales Office (next to Pastry is Art) and near the South Valet drop off area. The Village is located at 901 Federal Highway in Hallandale Beach.

The following items are needed: canned vegetables, canned fruit, applesauce, Chef Boyardee, Hamburger Helper, canned beans, canned meat (tuna, chicken, salmon), canned soup, mac and cheese, pasta, spaghetti sauce, rice, oatmeal, cereal and cereal bars, mashed potatoes, bottled water, crackers, peanut butter, jelly, juice boxes, snacks (chips, pretzels), pudding cups, and Jell-O. The Pantry of Broward is a “one-stop shop” for seniors (ages 60+) struggling to live on low fixed incomes and grandparents raising their grandchildren.

Each of their clients meets with their Director of Client Services regularly to review their individual needs and determine how The Pantry of Broward can best help them. Typical services provided include:

Monthly Nutritional Food Each month, The Pantry of Broward provides its 425 clients with a 55pound box of nutritional food, including fresh fruits and vegetables and breads.

According to USDA calculations, this food is enough to prepare at least 46 meals each month — more than half of the 90 recommended meals per month for each client. To further provide hunger assistance, The Pantry serves as a community partner for the Department of Children and Families and can assist qualified clients with applying for food stamp benefits. They estimate that this food helps 1,000 individuals each month, including 165 grandchildren.

Affordable Housing Many of their clients are in need of housing they can afford and/or repairs to their existing homes. The Pantry of Broward serves as a resource for identifying subsidized senior housing opportunities and guides clients through the approval process, advocating for them as needed. In addition, The Pantry partners with area businesses to provide home repair services in an effort to create a safer and more secure living environment and offers emergency assistance with utility and rent payments.

A Helping Hand Grandparents thrust into the role of caring for their grandchildren often need assistance with obtaining benefits for those children and need legal custody to apply for those benefits. The Pantry of Broward walks those clients through the proper channels so that they can work through the court system to obtain that cus-

tody. Once the custody is received, The Pantry provides its clients with assistance in obtaining all the benefits to which they are entitled and provides the kids with school supplies and holiday gifts.

The Pantry of Broward also assists their clients with guidance to affordable healthcare and medication, as well as trying to assist with their unique needs.

Volunteer The Pantry of Broward is able to function efficiently and effectively thanks in great part to their volunteers.

Volunteers share anywhere from a few hours a week to full-time helping The Pantry to pack food boxes, make phone calls, deliver food boxes, or help out wherever the need is greatest. Your time is very valuable and they

appreciate every minute you can spare to work with them.

COVID-19 Is Crippling Our Healthcare System I Believe My Experiences Over The Past Week Will Help Our Community

Over the past week I had regretfully seen and experienced the impact of COVID-19 on our health system. The past two weeks there has been an explosion of cases. The numbers are not simply because of the amount of testing. The trigger is the percentage of positives. As of the writing of this article the Broward rate of positive tests was up to 17.6 percent. When the county started to open in Phase I this number was down in the 1.03% percentile. The median age has dropped to 39 which shows the impact from younger age people not taking this seriously. The other concern is the hospitalization rate. The hospitals are beginning to overflow.

I have been on the calls with all the Mayors, Broward County staff and health professionals.

Last week there were some changes to the Broward County Emergency Declarations. While the Mayors were surprised, there were not major roll backs from Phase I, but there were changes.

The penalty for a restaurant not enforcing masks will mean they will be automatically shut for a day for the first offense. After the first offense there will be an increase of 72 hours for each following offense. Food or liquor cannot be consumed on premised between the hours of 10pm and 5am. There can be no food or liquor served at restaurants / bars. There can only be 6 guests maximum at a table unless they are from the same family with a maximum of 10.

There is now a mandatory mask requirement outside of your home. It is mandatory inside of all locations unless you are eating or swimming. Masks are mandatory in all common areas within an apartment or condominium building. Masks are required in gyms even while working out. There is also a rule requiring only one family per vacation rental, and no more than 10 people from that family.

Everything else has remained the same. All other rules are sill in place.

I usually do not share personal information in these articles, but I believe my experiences over the past week will help our community. More importantly this story may help encourage people that are still COVID-

I have now realized what every person that has had to go through when dropping off a sick family member or friend in the time of COVID-19. Now I was at the mercy of the phone. I could not go to the hospital.

Last Monday, after being sick for the weekend, I convinced my Mom to go to the hospital. She really was afraid to go. Now you must understand my Mom, she was part of the great generation.

She has always been a tough cookie. I was raised, unless you are bleeding, you brush yourself off and keep going. She did not think she was sick enough to risk getting exposure to COVID-19 in the hospital for a belly ache.

When I took her, she realized she may have waited too long.

Now this is the important part.

I pulled up to the ER after speaking with my doctor. I had to wait for a wheelchair, and they came to get her. I helped her get in the wheelchair and had to say so long. It was the worst helpless feeling I have every had. I have now realized what every person that has had to go through when dropping off a sick family member or friend in the time of COVID-19.

Ok, now I was at the mercy of

the phone. I had to call many times. I am not criticizing the hospital. Everyone that I did speak to was great, but overworked. The phone is the only way to get info. These nurses and doctors are inundated. The hospital was at the point of capacity. My mom stayed the day. At 91 she was there all alone going to tests, CT Scans, you name it. By 7 PM they called to say she was ready to be picked up, I was shocked, I asked what and why she was done and coming home. All I could get was her numbers are stable, so I picked her up. The next day she was still sick and was taken to the hospital by 911. That was the last time anyone spoke with my Mom in my family. I could not go to the hospital. It took 2 hours to get a call thru. It was awful. I was told that she was not going to make it. The only savior was hospice.

She was transferred out of the main hospital to a hospice located within another branch of the district. I was able to see my Mom before she was taken off the ventilator.

While it sounds strange, I was the lucky one. I saw my Mom one last time. This is playing out throughout our county, state and country. I have and believe after this tragic event in my life that we truly have no leadership where it needs to be. The denying of masks is an utter failure. I call BS there needs to be a national, mask mandate. We now have the third highest mortality rate in the world from COVID-19.

Our hospitals should not be the place to treat COVID-19. Like other countries we need field hospitals. We need to set aside hotels to house sick people that do not need a ventilator.

Thankfully, they are starting finally to build them again in Miami. COVID-19 is crippling our healthcare system. Seniors like my Mom are afraid to go out.

They are afraid to go to a doctor, to be treated for well checks and annual tests. We need to be demanding better. They are even shipping in nurses from other areas to keep up. Please if you are sick, go to the hospital, do not wait until it is too late.

We need to manufacture more tests. We need more labs to stop the backlog of tests. We will never get ahead of this without these simple measures. My message is also, be prepared. Be ready to go in and be cared for.

Be ready as a family member to know your involvement does stop at the door except for the phone. This virus is deadly period. Young or old.

My message is also wearing a mask is critical. If you do not love yourself enough, love your parents, kids and family members to protect them. Wearing a mask is not a sign of weakness, it is not government control or interfering with your liberty. It is the easiest way to save lives and protect one another.

Couch Potatoes? The Average Floridian Watched 450 Hours of TV During Lockdown Cherry Digital

For anyone who ever secretly longed to cancel long-standing social plans in order to stay in and have a quiet night in front of the TV, the lockdown surely came as a bit of a gift (pandemic notwithstanding).

Americans were forced to remain at home, and the main answer to relieving boredom and panic came in the form of the good old television.

But how much more have we been glued to the screen than before? And has it led to us becoming a nation of couch potatoes?

Ezvid Wiki, a video wiki, software and media company, polled nearly 4,000 Americans to find out how their habits had changed. Firstly, it transpires that Floridians have watched, on average, 450 hours of TV during lockdown (roughly 41 hours per week). This compares to 262 hours over a comparable prelockdown period.

But which part of America, you may wonder, has the squarest eyes? That would be Nevada; its residents watched the most TV of all, clocking up 519 hours, or 47 per week. In fact, that’s nearly 7 hours a day, which is almost like doing it as a full time job. Arkansans clearly had better

City of Hollywood Is Offering Assistance Eviction Prevention, Rent, Food, Utilities & Business Recovery The City has entered into an agreement with HOPE South Florida to provide Eviction Prevention, Rental and Utility Assistance for Hollywood residents affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Funding is provided

by State Housing Initiatives Partnership (SHIP) Funds.

Qualified residents can receive up to three months of assistance, up to $5,000. Those interested in participating in this program can visit the City’s website to fill out the program application: https:// www.hollywoodfl.org/rentassistance Additionally, assistance is available from Florida Power and Light. While the wide majority of

Florida Power and Light (FPL) customers are able to pay their bills, they do have customers struggling as a result of COVID19. FPL remains committed to helping those customers still experiencing hardship by connecting them with referral services, such as 211, to find financial assistance.

FPL continues to suspend disconnections for nonpayment, waive late fees, and offer payment extensions to help customers manage past-due balances.

While FPL never wants to turn

the lights off for nonpayment, they remain mindful that unpaid electric bills are ultimately paid for by all FPL customers.

Customers struggling to pay their

bill need to take action now by calling FPL directly, toll-free, at 800-226-3545. Representatives are available to discuss a customer’s particular situation, and

share information on available financial assistance.
