National Debt In Real Terms
You Can See For Yourself Your Portion Of The Debt At: www.usdebtclock.org
In an era of economic uncertainty and mounting financial challenges, the specter of the National Debt looms large over our nation’s future. As the debt continues to soar to unprecedented levels, it is imperative for policymakers and citizens alike to recognize the potential implications and take decisive action to curtail spending. This article delves into the importance of cutting spending, exploring the long-term consequences of an escalating National Debt and outlining the steps needed to safeguard our country’s financial stability.
Understanding the National Debt
The National Debt represents the accumulated borrowing by the government to finance its expenditures over time. It is the result of budget deficits, wherein government spending surpasses revenue each year, leading to the issuance of Treasury Bonds and other forms of debt instruments.
As of 2022, Japan owned $1.08 Trillion in U.S. Debt, making it the largest foreign holder of the National Debt. The secondlargest holder is China, which owns $870 Billion of U.S. Debt. Both Japan and China want to keep the value of the dollar higher than the value of their own

Ways Older Adults Can Pay It Forward Redefine Retirement Through Community Connection
Volunteering is one way older adults can improve their quality of life through connections with others
This time of year always provides plenty to celebrate and commemorate with the warmer weather and longer days.
May was Older Americans Month, a time for celebrating the contributions that older adults make in our country from coast to coast. This year’s theme was, “Aging Unbound,” promoting the independence, fulfillment and joy older Americans can experience by choosing their own paths as they age.
Instead of letting age define
their circumstances, older Americans are embracing change, pushing boundaries and transforming their communities through creativity, commitment and service. Everyone benefits when older adults remain engaged, independent and included.
Volunteering is one way older adults can improve their quality of life through connections with others, and it’s also been proven to make measurable improvements in the Mental and Physical Health of the volunteers themselves. In fact, 84% of volunteers report stable or improving health after one year of service and 88% report lower levels of feelings of isolation, according to a
study conducted by AmeriCorps Seniors.
As a first stop for anyone looking to explore volunteer opportunities, AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps Seniors connect individuals and organizations through service and volunteering. AmeriCorps Seniors matches Americans 55-plus with opportunities to improve their communities through the contribution of time, passion, skills and experience.
“AmeriCorps Seniors is tailormade for those aged 55 and older,” said Atalaya Sergi, Director of AmeriCorps Seniors. “It provides a space for older adults to take charge of their ‘second
act’ and use their time in valuable and impactful ways. All of our volunteers share a goal of making a difference in their communities, and many see their

currencies. This helps to keep their exports to the U.S. affordable, which helps their economies grow.
The magnitude of the debt has reached staggering proportions, with figures surpassing Trillions of Dollars, $31.41 Trillion as of January 2023, leaving an everincreasing burden on future generations.
As an example, if a median-income American ($70,784) family spent money like the U.S. Government, it would have spent all of its earnings, and then put nearly $20,000 on the credit card in 2022, even though it was already $447,000 in debt.
The Implications of Rising Debt
Economic Stability at Stake: The National Debt’s significance lies in its potential to destabilize the economy. As the debt grows, it puts upward pressure on interest rates, making it more expensive for individuals, businesses, and the government itself to borrow money. Higher interest rates can dampen economic growth, hampering investment and
Conspirators For The Constitution:
When Anti-Government Speech Becomes Sedition
By John & Nisha Whitehead
Let’s be clear about one thing: seditious conspiracy isn’t a real crime to anyone but the U.S. Government.
To be convicted of seditious conspiracy, the charge levied against Stewart Rhodes who was sentenced to 18 years in prison for being the driving force behind the January 6th Capitol Riots, one doesn’t have to engage in violence against the government, vandalize government property, or even trespass on property that the government has declared off-limits to the general public.
To be convicted of seditious conspiracy, one need only foment a revolution.
This is not about whether Rhodes deserves such a hefty sentence.
This is about the long-term ramifications of empowering the government to wage war on individuals whose political ideas and expression challenge the government’s power, reveal the government’s corruption, expose the government’s lies, and encourage the citizenry to push back against the government’s many injustices.
This is about criminalizing political expression in thoughts, words and deeds.
This is about how the government has used the events of January 6th in order to justify further power grabs and acquire more authoritarian emergency powers.
This was never about so-called threats to democracy.
In fact, the history of this nation is populated by individuals whose rhetoric was aimed at fomenting civil unrest and revolution.
Indeed, by the government’s own definition, America’s founders were seditious conspirators based on the heavily charged rhetoric they used to birth the nation.
Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Paine, Marquis De Lafayette, and John Adams would certainly have been charged for suggesting that Americans should not only take up arms but be prepared to protect their liberties and defend themselves against the government should it violate their rights.
Had America’s founders feared revolutionary words and ideas, there would have been no First Amendment, which protects the right to political expression, even if that expression is anti-government. No matter what one’s political persuasion might be, every American has a First
job creation. Reduced Fiscal Flexibility: A ballooning National Debt limits the government’s ability to respond effectively to future crises. When a significant portion of the budget is allocated to servicing debt, it leaves fewer resources available for vital public investments such as Education, Healthcare, Infrastructure and National Defense. This hampers the government’s ability to address emerging challenges and stifles Long-Term Economic Progress.
Burden on Future Generations: Saddling future generations with an overwhelming Debt Burden is both ethically questionable and economically unsustainable. As interest payments rise, more of the Federal Budget will be allocated towards servicing the debt, diverting funds away from critical programs and services. This intergenerational transfer of financial obligations risks impeding the prosperity and opportunities available to future citizens.
The Urgency to Cut Spending
Long-Term Fiscal Responsibility:
Cutting spending is an essential step towards ensuring long-term fiscal responsibility. By adopting prudent budgetary
measures, the government can rein in unnecessary expenditures, promote efficiency, and prioritize investments that yield the greatest returns. Responsible spending practices will help mitigate the accumulation of debt and foster a sustainable financial trajectory.
Encouraging Economic Growth:
Reducing the National Debt through spending cuts can foster a favorable economic environment. As the government’s demand for borrowing decreases, interest rates can stabilize, allowing businesses and individuals to access capital at more affordable rates. Lower interest rates stimulate investment, fuel job creation, and promote overall economic growth.
Preserving Social Programs: Taking steps to cut spending now will help preserve essential social programs in the future. By addressing the root causes of the debt, such as inefficient spending and redundant programs, the government can allocate resources more effectively. This ensures that vital safety nets, including healthcare, social security, and education, can be sustained without sacrificing quality or accessibility.
Enhancing International Confidence: A nation burdened by an ever-growing debt
Here is a graphic representation showing:
1 Million in $100 bills compared to $100 Million, $1 Billion & $1 Trillion
may face reduced confidence from international markets. Maintaining fiscal discipline and making tangible efforts to reduce the National Debt signal to investors and Credit Rating Agencies that the country is committed to its financial stability. This confidence can attract foreign investment, support the currency’s strength, and contribute to overall economic resilience.
As our nation grapples with the weight of an escalating National Debt, the imperative to cut spending cannot be overstated. Failure to address this pressing issue risks undermining Economic Stability, curtailing fiscal flexibility, and burdening future generations with insurmountable financial obligations. By prioritizing responsible budgetary measures, we can steer our country towards a sustainable and prosperous future. It is high time that policymakers and citizens alike embrace the urgency of cutting spending and act decisively to safeguard our nation’s financial well-being.
Amendment right to protest government programs or policies with which they might disagree.
The right to disagree with and speak out against the government is the quintessential freedom.
Every individual has a right to speak truth to power—and foment change— using every nonviolent means available.
Unfortunately, the government is increasingly losing its tolerance for anyone whose political views could be perceived as critical or “anti-government.”
All of us are in danger.
In recent years, the government has used the phrase “domestic terrorist” interchangeably with “anti-government,” “extremist” and “terrorist” to describe anyone who might fall somewhere on a very broad spectrum of viewpoints that could be considered “dangerous.”
The ramifications are so far-reaching as to render almost every American with an opinion about the government or who knows someone with an opinion about the government an extremist in word, deed, thought or by association.
Get ready for the next phase of the government’s war on thought crimes and truth-tellers.
For years now, the government has used all of the weapons in its vast arsenal—surveillance, threat assessments, fusion centers, pre-crime programs, hate crime laws, militarized police, lockdowns, martial law, etc.—to target potential enemies of the state based on their ideologies, behaviors, affiliations and other characteristics that might be deemed suspicious or dangerous.
For instance, if you believe in and exercise your rights under the Constitution (namely, your right to speak freely, worship freely, associate with like-minded
individuals who share your political views, criticize the government, own a weapon, demand a warrant before being questioned or searched, or any other activity viewed as potentially anti-government, racist, bigoted, anarchic or sovereign), you could be at the top of the government’s terrorism watch list.
Moreover, as a New York Times editorial warns, you may be an antigovernment extremist (a.k.a. domestic terrorist) in the eyes of the police if you are afraid that the government is plotting to confiscate your firearms, if you believe the economy is about to collapse and the government will soon declare martial law, or if you display an unusual number of political and/or ideological bumper stickers on your car.
According to one FBI report, you might also be classified as a domestic terrorism threat if you espouse conspiracy theories, especially if you “attempt to explain events or circumstances as the result of a group of actors working in secret to benefit themselves at the expense of others” and are “usually at odds with official or prevailing explanations of events.”
In other words, if you dare to subscribe to any views that are contrary to the government’s, you might already be flagged as potentially anti-government in a government database somewhere—Main Core, for example—that identifies and tracks individuals who aren’t inclined to march in lockstep to the police state’s dictates.
As The Intercept reported, the FBI, CIA, NSA and other government agencies have increasingly invested in corporate surveillance technologies that can mine constitutionally protected speech on the Social Media Platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram in order to identify
potential extremists and predict who might engage in future acts of antigovernment behavior.
And then there is the treatment being meted out to those such as Julian Assange, for example, who blow the whistle on government misconduct that is within the public’s right to know.
Since his April 2019 arrest, Assange has been locked up in a maximumsecurity British prison—in solitary confinement for up to 23 hours a day—pending extradition to the U.S., where if convicted, he could be sentenced to 175 years in prison.
This is how the police state deals with those who challenge its chokehold on power.
This is why the First Amendment is so critical. It gives the citizenry the right to speak freely, protest peacefully, expose government wrongdoing, and criticize the government without fear of arrest, isolation or any of the other punishments that have been meted out to whistleblowers.
The challenge is holding the government accountable to obeying the law.
Following the current trajectory, it won’t be long before anyone who believes in holding the government accountable is labeled an “extremist,” relegated to an underclass that doesn’t fit in, watched all the time, and rounded up when the government deems it necessary.
We’re almost at that point now.
Eventually, as I point out in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, we will all be seditious conspirators in the eyes of the government.
We would do better to be conspirators for the Constitution starting right now.

No matter what one’s political persuasion might be, every American has a First Amendment right to protest government programs or policies with which they might disagree
More than 140,000 Americans are matched with volunteer opportunities each year through three programs: RSVP, the Foster Grandparent Program and the Senior Companion Program.
“Our programs offer varying levels of involvement, interaction, time commitments and work with a diverse set of partners,” Sergi said. “We believe there’s a good fit for everyone and many opportunities for volunteers to meet like-minded peers who share their interests or pursue volunteer opportunities that can involve their families, too.”
Consider these ways older adults can get involved in their communities.
Respond To The Needs Of Your Community
With more than 115,000 volunteers, RSVP is the largest of the programs. It is a popular choice due to its flexible time commitments and diverse ways to serve. The program partners with national, state and local organizations to offer volunteers a wide range of service opportunities, from building houses to delivering food.
“All the people you meet when you’re a volunteer tell you their stories and experiences,” said Srini Srinivas, a volunteer serving with the RSVP Program. “You find that very rewarding and it enriches your life. Doing this service is a way of paying it forward. It supports the community. It keeps me active, which is a good thing. You also feel useful.”
Serve As Mentors
For older adults interested in working with children, the Foster Grandparent Program pairs volunteers with local schools and other programs focused on children, caring for and working with classes, groups or individual students. Volunteers serving with the Foster Grandparent Program serve between five and 30 hours each week based on their availability and may be eligible for a small monetary stipend to offset the cost of volunteering.
“My motto is, ‘There is never a never, you can always accomplish something.’
I’m here to help the kids learn, be there for them and teach them as much as I can,” said Priscilla Tsethlikai, a volunteer since 2016. “They’re teaching me, and at the same time, I’m teaching them.”
Provide A Helping Hand To Other Older Adults
Fostering relationships with other older adults is also a rewarding, and needed, option. Volunteers serving with the Senior Companion Program give about 20 hours each week and spend time with older adults in need of companionship or help with day-to-day tasks such as grocery shopping, getting to appointments or paying bills. Volunteers also may provide respite to family members caring for loved ones with chronic illnesses. The program may offer a small monetary stipend for volunteers who qualify.
“Volunteering has changed me, it keeps me grounded,” volunteer Carmen Swanson said. “When you help others and do for others, you enrich your own life. My favorite part is being available and of service to them. Whatever their desire is,
whatever they’d like to achieve - if I can execute the task, follow it through and accomplish it then it makes my day.”
While it may mean different things to different people, this year’s Older Americans Month theme of “Aging Unbound” provided one overarching sentiment: growing older can and should be empowering.
“We know there are stereotypes surrounding older adults, but we want people to shift their thinking,” Sergi said. “See the ways older adults continue to contribute to your life and communities, appreciate their wisdom and lived experiences, and join them in new endeavors. When the older adults in our communities are engaged, valued and genuinely included, we all benefit.” Though many older adults remain independent and engaged as they
age, some may find they are no longer able to complete daily tasks and require assistance. By looking for ways to assist older adults with tasks and engage with them intellectually, you can help them continue to live fulfilling lives. Consider these ways you can make a difference in the lives of older adults in your area:

Lifestyle Changes To Help Combat Incontinence
Sometimes living a healthy lifestyle can feel like an impossible task when combined with all your other responsibilities like working a full-time job, taking care of family and friends or spending time in the gym. Add dealing with an underlying health condition and it may seem almost overwhelming.
For example, a condition such as Urinary Incontinence is a common problem that is often difficult to manage and can range from a light leak while coughing or sneezing to even greater loss of Bladder control.
In fact, almost two-thirds of U.S. women over the age of 20 will experience leaking, accord ing to the experts at FitRight Fresh Start. While Stress, aging and Obesity can cause Incontinence, certain health events unique to women such as pregnancy, childbirth and Menopause can also cause problems with the Muscles and Nerves that help control your Bladder.
Consider these healthy lifestyle changes to help combat issues like Urinary Incontinence:
Focus on Fluid Intake
While it may seem counter intuitive when dealing with cer tain conditions, it’s important to hydrate appropriately. In fact, drinking too infrequently can cause other issues like Dehydration. To avoid frequent or urgent needs to urinate, the Mayo Clinic recommends drink ing smaller amounts throughout the day, such as 16 Ounces with each meal and 8 Ounces between meals. If you find your self waking multiple times at night to urinate, try drinking more of your fluids in the morning and afternoon rather than evening, and avoid Alcohol and beverages with Caffeine like Coffee, Tea and Soda.
Make Dietary Modifications
The things you eat can have an impact on your condition - both positively and negatively. For example, Alcohol; Spicy Foods; Chocolate; Artificial Sweeteners; Caffeinated, Carbonated and Citrus Beverages; and High-Acid foods, like Citrus and Tomatoes, may contribute to Bladder irritation, according to the National Institutes of Health. On the other hand, consider incorporating more of
these foods considered good for Bladder health: Blueberries, Green Beans, Cauliflower, Winter Squash, Sea Bass, Eggs or Egg whites, Whole Grains & Nuts.
Manage Bladder Leaks
Changing day-to-day habits may improve Bladder control, but for those living with leaks, it’s important to manage the condition rather than letting it disrupt your life or define you. One way to do that
confident all day long. Additionally, they’re built for maximum comfort for discreet use whether you’re staying on the couch or heading out on the town, and the 100% breathable materials enriched with Vitamin E help soften and protect sensitive skin.
Maintain A Healthy Weight And Stay Active
Two factors that have been shown to be part of nearly every healthy lifestyle include overall body strength and weight
the Bladder, further aggravating Urinary Incontinence.
Understanding Urinary Incontinence
If you’re experiencing Bladder leaks, dealing with them and the frustrations they bring shouldn’t keep you from freely living your full, multifaceted life. Designed for women by women, FitRight Fresh Start offers this information to help you learn about leaks and understand what’s happening to give you the power to keep Bladder leaks from disrupting or defining your life.
Common Kinds of Urinary Incontinence
Strong urges: That overwhelming need to use the restroom right away is known as Urge Incontinence, which frequently involves some level of unwelcome, involuntary leakage.
Stress and Pressure: This is the type of Incontinence many people experience and hate when they leak a little or sometimes a lot simply because a tiny sneeze or good laugh puts extra pressure on the Bladder. Jumping and heavy lifting are also causes.
Ongoing overflow: If it feels like your Bladder is never completely empty and you feel a slow, continuous drip, you’re experiencing Overflow Incontinence.
Common Causes of Urinary Incontinence
Motherhood: Carrying a bundle of joy inside your body for nine months then giving birth is bound to put pressure on your Pelvic Floor Muscles, which don’t always bounce back, especially after multiple births.
is choosing products that allow you to live your life to the fullest.

loss, which can be improved by increasing physical activity. Seek out exercises you enjoy so you can get physical while having fun. Aim for 30 minutes daily of lowimpact activities such as brisk walking, biking or swimming.
Stop Smoking
As a habit that can be detrimental to overall health, smokers are also more likely to suffer more severe symptoms from a variety of conditions, according to the Mayo Clinic. For instance, heavy smokers may also develop a Chronic Cough, which could cause pressure on
Menopause: Leaks can begin in Perimenopause, before you actually stop having periods, usually in your 40’s or 50’s. As Hormones shift, lower Estrogen Levels can lead to less elastic, weaker Pelvic Floor Muscles.
Medical Issues: Health conditions like Diabetes, Nerve or Joint Conditions, Urinary Tract Infections and Obesity can cause Bladder leaks, too, as well as physical limitations that inhibit your ability to make it to the bathroom in time.

The State of the City: An Eye to The Future of Hallandale Beach
This past Tuesday, I had the honor to deliver “The State of the City Address,” I want to thank the Hallandale Beach Area Chamber for their honor and the many stakeholders that joined in the event. I will be sharing my speech over the next few weeks. Please note it is in speech form.
Over the past year, I think we have all moved out of COVID-19 with an eye to the future. Obviously, we are still faced with many social and economic problems. Insurance Costs, Housing Costs, the Stock Market, the War in Ukraine, Gun Violence, just to name a few. What will the future look like?
All of these issues have a direct or indirect impact on the way we run our cities, how you run your businesses and how our residents go through their daily lives. But as we move forward, I believe we all are striving and working towards stability and hopefully growth, the state of our City in one word: Stable, I do not want to go too far back in our past. As it is said that we cannot change it, but we can learn from it. A little over 5 years ago, I came back as Mayor. At that time, the City was in financial dire straits. As a matter of fact, the reserves had dropped to $11 Million Dollars, They were projected to dip to $8 Million then Financial Insolvency.
As a rule of thumb, our City’s goal is to have a minimum of 16% percent of General Fund Reserves in case of an Emergency. Currently, due to the hard work of our City and sacrifices of our taxpayers we have over $24 Million in Unaudited Reserves as of last month.
That sounds fantastic, right? Well, it is but there are still past issues that are a threat to the stability of our Budget. We are still facing a $6 Million Dollar Judgment for the firing of Former City Manager Daniel Rosemond. The Case is on Appeal, so we need to ensure we have savings if the Appeal Court supports the ruling. Even with that large use of reserves to pay this unfortunate debt, we will not go back to where we began five years ago.
I do not want to place blame on any one thing or person, but this situation reinforces that leadership truly matters and the buck stops with the Commission! To those of you that are new to our community, this history explains why and
Service in his DNA. I first met Dr. Jeremy Earle as a Board Member of the Florida Redevelopment Association where we both served. He became President, turned the organization around and made it solvent. This is proof of his strong leadership, financial knowledge, strategic vision and most of all integrity.
We all know that ethics and morals are part of one’s character, but the “reporting of true facts” is actually integrity.
This one thing my Dad taught me: you should never allow anyone to take away from you. That is why I fought my biggest battle.
I believe that Dr. Jeremy Earle was also raised with those values and never forgets them no matter what position he holds.
So, he deserves the super majority of credit and recognition of why we are stable.
W. Clement Stone, an entrepreneur who was born into poverty during 1902 worked tirelessly and turned one hundred dollars into a billion-dollar insurance company. He believed in some truths when it comes to business practices. One is
Have the courage to face the truth. Do the right thing because it is right. These are the magic keys to living your life with integrity.” To me this summarizes not only leadership, but the qualities that Dr. Jeremy Earle has brought to our table.
He is not a “YES MAN.” Too often City Managers are more worried about job security and counting to three rather than doing the right thing for their cities. I do believe that if stars had not aligned with the hiring of the right City Manager, and the right City Commission was not on the Dais, our City would be in Chapter Nine Bankruptcy.
This is not to spread fear but truth. You have heard it and it is true. A city, like all businesses, if it is not run properly, can go Bankrupt. Even before COVID-19 there were 69 Government Bankruptcies filed since 2010. Detroit, being the most notable.
Dr. Jeremy Earle was tasked once
again to right a ship and make our City solvent to avoid fiscal collapse. This City Commission, free from drama and united, ward approach of Dr. Jeremy Earle. I must say. Do not mistake his “by the book manor” as a sign of indifference or lack of empathy. Quite the contrary. He is an analytical person, protector of the City, creative and genuinely cares for what is best for everyone that is concerned. And yes, he does listen to his bosses and to our community. He does what is right because it is right!
Since he came on board, he has added new Staff Members to our City. This amazing group of public servants have created a five-year stability plan to rebuild. He led with the Motto “NO MORE KICKED CANS.” I joke once in a while and say “Kicked Cans down the road do not disappear, they just stack up at the end. Well, we were at the end of that road and started to address not one can, but all of them.”
The journey began. A year later, we all were faced with the uncertainty of COVID19.
Next week, I will continue my State Of The City Address.
As always, I am available for your questions, concerns and ideas to help make our City a better place. Please feel free to reach out to me at my Office: (954) 457-1318. On my Cell/Text at: (954) 632-5700. Or Email me at: jcooper@cohb.org.
A Message From Josh Levy, Mayor Of Hollywood Beach Investigation Leads To All Suspects Arrested
As you may have been relieved to hear on the news this morning, all five of the South Broward teenagers who were involved in the shooting that occurred on Memorial Day at Hollywood Beach have now been arrested by the Hollywood Police Department.
I want to express my deepest gratitude to the community for assisting Law Enforcement and showing that we stand united in not tolerating such behavior in our cities and public spaces.
The collaborative response that we saw from the public, Law Enforcement, good Samaritans, Paramedics and Medical Professionals highlights the power of unity when we stand united against crime and come to the aid of those in need.
Moving forward, let us continue to support one another, remain vigilant against any form of criminal activity, and foster a culture of care and responsibility.
While our Law Enforcement Agencies are diligently working to address and prevent all forms of violence, it is essential to understand that targeted incidents such as this often arise from specific conflicts and underlying issues, which further emphasize the significance of early intervention and community support in pre-
venting, identifying and resolving such disputes.
Remember the “See Something, Say Something” principle in maintaining the safety of our community. If you see something suspicious or know something, say something.
It is crucial that we instill in our youth the understanding that if they witness or hear about any situation that may pose harm to someone, their responsibility is to confide in a trusted adult, whether it be a teacher, a parent, police or any reliable person. Keeping our community safe requires the active participation of each and every one of us, and by empowering our youth with this knowledge, we are fos-
the efforts of Law Enforcement Agencies, including the Hollywood Police Department, FBI, FDLE and U.S. Marshals who worked tirelessly to bring these perpetrators to justice.
Be sure that our city leadership is steadfast in its commitment to providing highly capable police and rescue services in Hollywood. We spare no expense investing in Public Safety, funding the highest levels of personnel possible and equipping them with advanced technologies such as CCTV Surveillance Cameras
Leveraging these resources creates a safer environment for everyone in our community.
Let us continue to build upon the strong foundation of trust and unity that we have cultivated in Hollywood. Together, we can create a future where criminals will know to avoid our city and where the well-being of our residents is a shared value that we all care for and protect.
Thank you for being an integral part of our community and for your continued support.
Adopt a Catch Basin: Join The City of Hollywood to Help Control Flooding
Now that we are in the rainy season, frequent heavy rainstorms increases the potential for localized flooding. City of Hollywood crews work to keep the more than 157 miles of underground storm system piping and 4900 catch basins clean. Residents can also do their part by pitching in to help control flooding in and around their neighborhood by adopting their own catch basin.
The adoption is easy - just sign-up to adopt, take a look at the basin at least once a month and clean it as needed. Then submit proof of your efforts. In doing so, you can earn points for rewards for helping to prevent flooding and waterway pollution.

It Takes A Vibrant Village
To Build A Collective In Downtown Hollywood
“Being part of a collective is being part of a community,” stated Veronica Coleman, partner in the newly-opened Vibrant Village Collective at 2028 Harrison Street, Bay #104.
Her partner Amanda Nieves agreed.
“Our goal,” she said, “is making this a community-style place for all types of artists, makers and curators, giving anyone the opportunity to open a shop without all the other responsibilities of doing so.”
The Vibrant Village’s mission is to provide a community space where people can gather, shop, and host or attend workshops or classes. And The Vibrant Village does just that.
The intimate but uncluttered space contains the collections of 20 (and counting) local small businesses that include artists, jewelry makers, and vintage resellers, as well as a workshop area in the back that is available for anyone (not just collective members) to run art classes and workshops in any creative discipline.
The two young mothers, each doing independent online businesses selling vintage goods, met while part of another collective. Coleman, a military wife who is thrilled to be finally putting down roots, knew from the start that Downtown Hollywood would be a great place for a co-operative, creative business.
“I always wanted to open a collective, and as soon as I saw Downtown Hollywood, I knew that I wanted to open it here,” she explained. “I watched the small markets grow in Sacramento, where I’m from, and I could see that Hollywood, with its small, family-town feeling, had the potential to be what Sacramento has become.
“And Harrison Street is perfect

because it’s a little quieter and away from the main track,” she added. “Amanda had the experience from a collective she was a part of in Colorado, and when I told her about the spot, she agreed that we should do it together.”
“Here, in Hollywood, they get it,” agreed Nieves, who was born in New York and raised in Florida. “The vibe, the style.”
The duo found the space, vendors who wanted to be a part of it, and set up shop in just a few weeks.
“I laugh because we had such a short amount of time to get this done,” said Coleman, “and it looks nothing like we thought it was going to be; it took on a life of its own! But we love, love, love it!”
The line-up of vendors at The Vibrant Village includes Coleman’s Collection, The Repeat Vintage, which features clothing, home decor, art and a variety of acces sories, and Nieves’ line, The Thrift Witch, which is mostly clothes, but also features a selection of mid-century colored glass and “random things like Pyrex,” she said. Other vendors offer a huge assortment of vintage goods and boutique, handmade items ranging from clothing to decor to pet accessories.
“We have big dreams for our village and are excited to be a part of this incredible community,” said Coleman.
Added Nieves, “It’s a great way to have ownership of a business that also opens an opportunity for other people to branch their own businesses and help everyone grow.”
The Vibrant Village Collective is open from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Sunday. The shop is closed on
