“Painting and Collage
Inspired by Yayoi Kusama”
Through the Museum Of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA)’s continued efforts to include diverse voices and perspectives, the museum is offering a robust series of educational and public programming to commemorate Autism Acceptance Month and Earth Month this April.
On view through Sunday, April 16th, 2023, “Didier William: Nou Kite Tout Sa Dèyè” is the largest solo presentation of Didier William’s career. Translated as “We’ve Left That All Behind,” the show presents an in-depth look at the Haitian-Born, North Miamiraised artist’s career and memory among the very neighborhood where he once grew up.
In a blend of personal reflections, biographical anecdotes and art historical moments, some of the works in the show recontextualize historical iconographies and ideas, stripping them of their “known” truths and transforming each into something entirely new. By doing so, William playfully and unapologetically reclaims autonomy over a fragmented record of history, engaging his personal connection to the complexity of immigrant narratives and queer identity to cre-

Abortion & Gun Laws Have You Been Following What is Taking Place, It Is Abhorrent
By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper
“I have always been a proponent of the three B’s. Stay out of our Beliefs. Stay out of our Bedrooms. Stay out of our Bodies.” Hallandale Beach
Mayor, Joy Cooper
State Legislators are in Tallahassee addressing citizen concerns. Are they? If you have been following what is taking place it is abhorrent. After years of lobbying and advocating on all levels of government on common sense gun laws this state seems dedicated to giving every single person the ability to carry a gun without a permit.
In 1994 there was actually an “assault weapons ban” passed in Congress after the 1989 Mass Shooting at a school in Stockholm, California. After that there was a Mass Shooting in 1993 at a law firm. The law was passed as a way to regulate weapons of war. It banned the sale of certain automatic assault weapons and more importantly large magazines. The law passed but with a 10 year sunset provision. It allowed those that had these automatic weapons to keep them. In 2004 the ban was not renewed.
Last meeting, I sponsored a resolution opposing the new “permit less carry” law and it was adopted unanimously by the Commission. It is simply bazaar even though polls suggest 61% of Floridiana are against permit less carry and 76% of Floridians support universal background checks. So why would our Governor and the elected officials support this law? Even our law enforcement is opposed. I have heard all the reasons about gun rights and this law being guised under the name Constitutional Carry. I am here to share that the NRA is real and they spend a ton of money $52 Million Dollars in 2020 alone. Not only do they spend direct, indirect and money through various PAC’s they spend a ton on
grassroots opposition research. Back in 2018 the NRA cold called my office to find out if I was running for office. They did not realize I answered my own calls. In the last election in Florida alone they spent $15 Million Dollars.
So, when you are hearing it is about their base it may be. I argue it’s about the money and the backlash if they do not carry the NRA’s water. We all need to unite and fight this bad legislation. Let us be real. How are our police going to be able to regulate and enforce anything? This law will increase the number of senseless killings and worse accidental shootings. Anyone with a weapon should be trained. This is simple common sense.
Another issue is the outright Abortion bans. Yes, 6 weeks is an outright ban. Most women do
not even know they are pregnant at 6 weeks. Typically, most find out after 8 and some do not until much later as they cannot afford care. I understand that at this time they have put in the new bill with two exceptions. One for incest and the other for rape. The caveat is that victims need to be documented and before 15 weeks.
So here is a reality check. Most sexual assaults go unreported. According to a recent Miami Herald article “Only 310 out of 1,000 are reported.” The FBI reports that incest takes place in 10% percent of families and only 20% percent of those are reported.
I have always been a proponent of the three B’s. Stay out of our Beliefs. Stay out of our Bedrooms. Stay out of our Bodies. For 50 years women
have had the right to privacy for our own health decisions. Now in the “Free State of Florida,” we are the slaves in our own state. I am thankful there is a lawsuit against the 15-week ban. It is going to be interesting what happens now. Obviously we are all waiting on the supreme court ruling on the 15week ban. There is also something else in play. If the ruling falls in favor of the state there will be another filing by the ACLU. In 1980, Florida’s Constitution provided “Every natural person has the right to be let alone and free from governmental intrusion into the person’s private life.” It was upheld in a 1989 case about parental consent over Abortion. This case will have implications and obviously we are all waiting for the Supreme Court ruling. Even this case is a long shot with
the Republican majority sitting on our court. Three were appointed by the Governor.
The truth is Abortions will still happen. We want safe, accessible and private health care. I believe we can all agree on that.
During 2021 in the State of Florida there were 80,000 Abortions performed. 4,800 of them 6% occurred after 12 weeks. However, most ultrasounds do not take effect for fetal anatomy until 18 weeks so this new band would require two doctors to sign off. Also, there will be a review panel set up, so doctors more than likely will be apprehensive due to threats on their medical license.
The commission passed a resolution against this Legislation. One might ask why to weigh in on this type of issue. In my mind this is a public health issue. I cannot imagine a day when a doctor is being arrested for providing care. I also cannot imagine our EMS responding to calls for botched backroom Abortions. It has become partisan due to the fact some want freedom that pertains to their own beliefs.
I can respect everyone’s belief but when we force them on everyone, that is Totalitarianism. Ironically, 50% of Catholics support Abortion Rights, 57% percent historically Black Protestant and 67% Protestants and only 36% Evangelical Protestants support. 56% of Floridians support Abortion. So once again who is the state representing. Our “Free State?” One of the fundamental bedrocks of our society is the freedom of privacy. Once we continue to erode that right, what is left?

ate opportunity for investigation and redemption.
Also, on view through Sunday, April 16th, 2023, “Kanaval” is a survey by Photographer, Filmmaker, Curator and Writer Leah Gordon that documents twenty years of Carnival in Haiti. Curated by MOCA Curator Adeze Wilford, the exhibition consists of a series of black-andwhite photographs taken on a mechanical medium format camera. The images are contextualized by a series of oral histories relayed by various troupe leaders, who also oversee the design of the costume and generate the narratives surrounding Carnival. Their stories reflect the wealth of invention, fable, and self-generated mythology prevalent in much of Haitian culture. The photographs will be accom panied by a new feature-length documen tary on the Carnival providing a kinetic counterpoint to the portraits.
This season’s Art on the Plaza series will kick-off with artist Edison Peñafiel’s installation, “Run, Run, Run Like The Wind.” This colorful display of nine ban ners hangs from the highest point of the palm trees throughout MOCA’s Plaza, showcasing characters on the run and accompanied by text taken from Latin American protest songs. Peñafiel’s work will highlight the act of escape during political turmoil, speaking to themes of human migration, displacement and social justice. It will be on display until May.
On view through Sunday, June 25th, 2023, visitors will be able to step into MOCA’s Paradise Courtyard and discover “Victory Garden,” an interactive sculptural community garden created by Miamibased artist Emmett Moore. Drawing inspiration from Victory Gardens of the past, which were planted during wartime to supplement rations and boost morale, Moore’s “Victory Garden” connects the local community with contemporary art and encourages visitors to reflect on their relationship with the built environment.

Least Desirable Places To Live In On A $100K Salary Florida Has The City
An annual salary of $100,000 sounds like quite a lot of money, particularly when the average U.S. salary is $53,490 per year. However, it is relative depending on your purchasing power. While San Francisco, for example, offers its residents a thriving arts & culture scene, glorious climate, an outdoor lifestyle and world class restaurants, living in this California city comes with a significant price tag. Typical rents exceed $4,500, the average price of homes is $1.3 Million and to live comfortably, it is said you would need to earn $230K.
So would living in some of America’s most aspirational locations stack up if you were on a six-figure salary? Or would you prefer to live somewhere cheaper where, even if it offered less lifestyle options, you could get more bang for your buck? It’s a question real time coupon and deals discovery site, CouponBirds, sought to answer, by surveying 3,000 respondents and asking them a hypothetical question:
Which of America’s 150 most expensive cities would you least like to live in, if earning a salary of $100,000?
Palm Beach, Florida, emerged as the least desirable city to live in when earning ‘just’ $100K. It appears that you have to have a Trump-style income to live there (his home, Mar-a-Lago, is there), but $100K just won’t cut it, thanks to its exclusive location, the high cost of real estate, high cost of goods, services and high property taxes. It has more than the average share of luxury condos and homes, as well as plenty of upscale restaurants and retail outlets. And because the city has invested well in public services and amenities, to keep it looking pristine, the cost of living is higher here too. Suddenly that new salary doesn’t seem as impressive.

Higher Ground
Higher Ground (Fort Lauderdale Air Show Kickoff Concert) is the talk of the town in South Florida’s live music scene. This young, energetic group has been rocking parties from Miami to Palm Beach with the best hit songs from every genre. Everywhere this band appears, people are immediately affected by their ‘infectious’ groove. Higher Ground has one of any cover band’s most diverse song lists. From Elton John to Elvis, Jay-Z to Ariana Grande, there is virtually nothing they can’t deliver.
Two other Florida cities were voted as undesirable locations to live in. Bal Harbour came in 6th position overall. Its prime location right on the water, with easy access to beautiful beaches, high-end shopping, fine dining and entertainment options, is a major factor in its high cost of living. Additionally, the town has strict zoning laws that limit the amount of development and maintain the exclusivity of the area.
And following in 22nd position came Pinecrest. Its prime location just south of downtown Miami, with easy access to major highways, top-rated schools and the beach, is a significant factor in its high cost of living. Additionally, Pinecrest is home to some of the most luxurious properties in South Florida.
The second least desirable
city was wonderful Wailea in Hawaii. Set on the dreamy island of Maui, it’s where tourists and retirees alike flock for sunshine, sunsets and giant tiki cocktails. Two factors make it particularly pricey - firstly, everything has to be imported, which makes goods and services more expensive and secondly there is a limited supply of housing available. In addition, the cost of utilities, transportation and other necessities are generally higher in Hawaii than anywhere else in the U.S. New York City came in as the fifth least desirable city to live in. It may be the city that never sleeps, but if you can’t afford to take a decent bite out of the Big Apple - Broadway shows, cocktail bars, hip restaurants - then
there’s not much point living there. It’s frequently ranked annually as the world’s most expensive city and despite being such a huge hub for tourism, culture and business, you would have to earn well over $100K a year to actually enjoy it properly. Property is in high demand and short supply, driving up prices, too.
It’s not surprising to find Malibu, California, in the top 10 (it came in at number 9). Stunning beachfront properties line the shore, many of which are owned by A list celebrities.
Rumored residents include: Lady Gaga, Cindy Crawford, Kanye West and Julia Roberts, drawn by the laid back vibe, proximity to the sea and great shops and
restaurants. Of course that ramps up the demand for housing, which comes at a premium as there is scant room for development beyond what’s already there.
And at number 10 is another Cali classic: Beverly Hills. Notable for its starring appearance in the film Pretty Woman, here there are designer boutiques galore, from Armani to Versace, luxury hotels such as the Beverly Wilshire (the setting for the film), the Beverly Hills Hotel and the Four Seasons. Not exactly cheap. Add in top notch schools, incredible houses and its proximity to Hollywood and the movie industry and you’ve got a recipe for somewhere only the very rich can afford.

music from the supergroup Earth, Wind And Fire. This hot group also adds more flavor to the show with songs from the 2004 Chicago Earth, Wind And Fire World Tour. Leader Debbie Pierce is a Multi-Instrumentalist (Sax/Vocal/Flute) who has been performing in South Florida for over 20 years. Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious A Musical Adventure For The Entire Family
One of the most popular Disney movies of all time is capturing hearts of a whole new generation of audiences as Slow Burn Theatre Company presents Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins in the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts currently showing through Sunday, April 9th, 2023.
Based on the books by P.L. Travers and the Classic Walt Disney Film Mary Poppins, the musical delighted Broadway audiences during more than 2,500 performances and received nominations for nine Olivier and seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
The beloved story begins with Bert, a jack-of-all trades, welcoming the audience to 1910 England and the troubled Banks family. Everyone’s favorite, practically-perfect nanny, Mary Poppins, arrives to lead a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious musical adventure. Using magic and common sense, she teaches the family how to value each other again. Even grown-ups can learn a lesson or two from the nanny who advises that “Anything can happen if you let it.”
The original music and lyrics by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman includes the timeless favorites “Jolly Holiday,” “Step In Time,” “Feed The Birds” and “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.” New songs and additional music and lyrics include “Practically Perfect” and “Anything Can Happen” and are by the Olivier Award-Winning British team of George Stiles and Anthony Drew. Complications from Epilepsy claimed Clayton’s life in 1993 when he was just 18-years-old.
Fifteen-year-old Jayla’s life took a drastic turn in 2021, the year she was first diagnosed with Epilepsy. Despite this diagnosis, she has not let it stop her passion for gymnastics. through the organization’s Youth Advocacy Council And Parent Advisory Board.
“We’re so proud to recognize Jayla for her bravery facing Epilepsy and her incredible will to help make the path easier for others, like her, who are living with this disease,” said Karen Basha Egozi, President and CEO of Epilepsy Alliance Florida.
“She’s a true inspiration and representation of all this special award entails.”
