We Can’t Keep Shirking Mental Health Care. The latest trend among adolescents is deadly. The suicide rate for people ages 10 to 14 tripled between 2007 and 2017, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control. Suicide is now the second leading cause of death for Americans ages 10 to 24. For years, doctors like me have stressed that similar to any physical illness, mental illness can lead to harmful consequences. Moreover, when left untreated, mental illness can potentiate physical disease, resulting in expensive treatment needs. But all this often goes unacknowledged -- particularly by the insurance industry. Even in the midst of a youth suicide epidemic, most payers erect barriers to treatment for common mental illnesses just to cut costs. This is more than irresponsible -- it’s counterproductive. Mental illness can lead to serious and costly conditions. If insurers really wanted to keep costs down, they’d expand coverage for mental health services. Monestime, Xavier Suarez and former County Mayor Alex Penelas. Newcomer, Monique Nicole Barley, also joined the race. They all contend to succeed current Mayor Carlos Gimenez who relinquishes his non-partisan position due to term limits. “Some of the top issues that I want to hear the candidates talk about are what new plans the county has to address climate change, sea level rise, and certainly mass transit whether it’s a rail line or an enhanced bus system that Gimenez favored. Although crime has gone down,

In a case that will decide whether the government can interfere with the choices of religious institutions regarding who may minister to and lead followers on matters of faith, The Rutherford Institute has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to affirm that the First Amendment’s protection of religious liberty prevents the government from meddling in church decisions involving religious doctrine and who is allowed to teach that doctrine. In an amicus brief filed with the Court in Our Lady of Guadalupe School v. Agnes Morrisey-Beru and St. James School v. Darryl Biel, Institute attorneys argue that the government has no jurisdiction to second-guess church decisions on who can act and serve as “ministers.” Affiliate attorney Nathan A. Adams IV of Holland & Knight assisted The Rutherford Institute in advancing the arguments in the amicus brief. “Those who subscribe to the notion that society should be free from religion tend to use the principle of a separation of church and state as a bludgeon to eradicate religion from the public sphere when it fact the First Amendment provides for free-
