• Oh, Christmas Tree. Though cutting down a tree to temporarily decorate your living room may not seem like the “greenest” option, cut trees actually have less of an impact than plastic trees! Fake trees are made from non-recyclable materials and typically shipped from China. The manufacturing and shipping process creates pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Christmas trees from lots are farmed. This means your cut tree will be replaced by a new tree which will absorb carbon as it grows. More than 100 children were provided with gift cards for up to $100 to spend on presents for family members and themselves. State-of-the-art body cameras lead the way for HB Police Hallandale Beach leads the way in South Florida in equipping officers with state-of-the-art body cameras which are expected to provide additional safety for the public and officers. The new cameras clip onto the officer’s glasses to provide a view of what the officer sees and encounters. The cameras record both high-definition video and audio. In the initial rollout, the City is equipping 10 officers with cameras.

Eventually, there will be 20 officers and eight sergeants with the cameras.

There are so many positives going on in Hallandale Beach

There are so many positive things that happened this year for Hallandale High’s football program.

The Chargers finished with the best record in school history, were rated No. 1 in the state for the first time ever. In addition, head coach Damien Jones and his staff had three players sign early with Joshua Hammond following in his brother’s footsteps and will head to Florida. Receiver Demari Simpkins and record-setting quarter Tyler Huntley will head to the University of Utah. Huntley was named the Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Florida and threw for over 9,000 career yards and 109 TDs. Finally the Chargers had the chance last week to pick up a $1,000 check from Jon Gruden, who was in town to do the Monday night game.

After that time, a decision to replace or change for different types will be made.

Same with the palms at the playground.

Our city has put aside money for the beach renurishment in our area which is Segment II. We have had renourishment many times in the past. Currently, due to sea level rise and our location, we have what are called hot spots. This project is slated to be addressed after Segment I that has been recently in the press. I have met with our County Commissioner Beam Furr and this project is on the top of his priority list. We are actively lobbying against the county diverting money that is earmarked for beach renourishment through bed taxes. I encourage our readers to reach out to him and support his effort.

I have also been covering redevelopment in this city. This past Tuesday, the planning and zoning board held their monthly hearing.

Approximately 80 residents attended. The meeting had a presentation of the Diplomat, Gulfstream Park plat amendment, a rezoning on an existing nonconforming residential unit in the southwest section and a plat for the new Nana’s Preschool site.

The Diplomat was recommended for approval to the commission with the suggested changes for staff and in addition, reduction of residential tower to 25 stories, a commitment to not add landscaping along the fence line on Diplomat Parkway, further analysis of traffic mitigation and other staff recommendations. Also, as in the past, the commission should work towards an agreement to keep the golf course, a

golf course in perpetuity. The Gulfstream and Nana’s applications were also recommended to the city commission for approval. The rezoning was not on a 4-3 against. These meetings are advisory in nature, so what is recommended or denied comes to the commission for final approval. I do not have the agenda dates at this time for these items.

It is the season, so we all know that what means, traffic. Please plan ahead and try to avoid rush hour. Also, I invite everyone to shop local for the holidays.

host events for the benefit of our community. They are estimating having the amenity in operation within the next few months.

Another question that came up has been about the beach cleaning. The beach is cleaned every day in the morning. During turtle season our public workers need to wait until the beach is inspected to make sure there are no nesting areas. If they are found we have to work around them.

The beach is cleaned with specific equipment. This equipment cannot clean right at the water’s edge due to instable sand and for safety reasons. In many areas due to erosion, some spots cannot be accessed. This happens particularly in the south area were the beach narrows. The last two weeks, the equipment to clean was broken down but it has since been repaired.

Another great question is why the city does not take out the old seaweed rather then burying it. The short answer is when buried, it allows for a better base for the sand and helps slow erosion. Being situated along the Atlantic Ocean and in this area of South Florida so close to the Gulf Stream, our beach is very active. Mother Nature actually takes and puts sand back on the beach naturally. You will hear this referred to a migration.

The trees that are in the parking lot are not dead. Some have called about their condition. The trees have been examined by the experts and it has been concluded that the warrant be extended to give them more time.

They have grown but due to wind and salt they are not thriving.

being studied are: environmental theories, biological theories, and genetics.

Community activist Barbara Southwick was on hand assisting as always and city commissioner Keith London accompanied several children locating their gifts of choice. Leo Grachow, who is serving as President of the Kiwanis Club of Hallandale Beach was one of five Kiwanis members participating at the event.

The tradition of holiday gift giving was initiated by the venerable late Police Chief Thomas Magill and continued by Retired Sergeant Martin Shorkey followed by retired Major Ken Cowley. Magill’s wife and daughters work feverishly at the breakfast and Walmart honoring the Chief’s memory.

stake in who moves into the White House in January 2017, never before has there been so much attention and interest in what happens in November of 2016, when America goes to the polls to elect the person who will inherit many problems along with a future that does not look good at all.

Because of social media, candidates are now appealing to the voters who have the chance to voice their opinions immediately on everything from the economy to immigration to the terrorist attacks that have consumed the headlines.

This is one of those elections that will take each and every candidate through the rigors of telling the truth and not changing their mind just to appeal to the masses. They have already been reminded many times by those who follow Twitter and Instagram, looking for the one mistake that is made.

For Eliza Dewberry of Aventura, this is the first election that the the 22year-old has really taken an interest in. A registered Democrat, she listens to everything that Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, the two front runners, have to say. While she does not agree with everything, the FIU graduate has done her homework and she will be better prepared than most.

“This is the first time I will vote,” she says. “I have been taught by my parents that it is indeed an honor to cast a vote. I have read up on everyone - even those who are probably not relevant.”

Because of social media, Dewberry admits that trying to separate the facts from all the fiction that is tossed out there is not easy. She says that the best way to follow along is to catch the debates and see what each and every candidate has to say about issues that will certainly affect us all.

Peter Tally of North Miami Beach is another Democrat who has had his mind made up for a long time. While he is certainly not one to cross party lines, he does listen to what is being said by the Republicans. A group that has

a number of candidates who always has something to say.

“Hillary makes the most sense to me,” he explained. “The Republicans have made too much of a show out of the race. They bicker and fight about every issue. I am not into that name calling and finger pointing.”

While the democrats may have more of a clear-cut candidate for president, it doesn’t signal that the entire country is all about what many call the “same old” for the next four years.

Hallandale Beach resident James Palladino is one of those Donald Trump supporters who is tired of the excuses being made and not satisfied with the “hiding your head in the sand” mentality that many of the Democrats have shown.

Palladino, like so many others are quick to point out that if candidates continue to make promises and talk about things - instead of actually trying to implement ideas - the country will remain stagnant and other nations will continue to play on that weakness, over and over

again.

“The Democrats spent the first four years of this current administration, making excuses that there was huge cleanup after George Bush’s eight years,” Palladino said. “We need someone who is going to pull no punches - and actually address the important issues - without blaming it on the past.”

Palladino admits that while Trump comes off abrasive, and many think he is a total joke, his ideas and the fact that he doesn’t want to sit back and wait for things to happen, has made him an overwhelming favorite.

His ideas and solutions are usually laughed at because of the way he says things. Last week’s comments, while many of his supporters understood where he was generally coming from on the Muslims, was worded wrong, and even those supporters flinched at the thought that he would allienate an entire religion, painting everyone as a terrorist.

Recent polls have found that the majority of people think pharmaceutical companies are to blame and that the government should negotiate prices for Medicare and force companies to release pricing information.

Sanders has said he’ll do both of these things (and also import drugs from Canada). Clinton said she would require

insurance plans to put a $250 monthly cap on out-of-pocket drug spending for people with chronic or serious conditions, and increase competition for specialty drugs.

Rubio has said some drug companies have engaged in “pure profiteering,” and Trump said it was “disgusting” that one company wanted to raise the price on an AIDS drug by 5,000 percent.

• Wrap your presents in green! When exchanging gifts this year, skip the wrapping paper and instead wrap up your gifts in newspaper, glossy ads, fabric scraps, or reusable bags. Speaking of reusable bags, as you do your shopping say no to bags and tissue paper and bring your own instead!

• Make a list and check it twice. Reduce the number of vehicle trips you take by heading out to do your gift and food shopping with a plan! Need something that didn’t make your list? Consider taking that trip on bike or by foot.

• ‘Tis the season for zero waste. Hosting a holiday party? Reduce waste by eliminating disposable plates and cutlery. Washing dishes, though it does use water, is still less impactful on the environment than the manufacturing, transportation, and disposal of disposable plates and cutlery.

• Be a Scrooge. Say no to wasteful gift exchanges and reduce demand for consumer products made to be disposed. We’ve all received those trinkets from co-workers and acquaintances that clutter our homes for a while and ultimately end up in the landfill. Keep the sentiment of gift exchanges while reducing the waste. For your holiday parties suggest that everyone bring a gift out of their own closets. This can be something nice that they just don’t use or need but which might be appreciated by someone else. Find gifts for family and friends at thrift stores and second hand shops. Or, instead of gifting things, gift experiences. Memberships and event tickets make excellent gifts and give lasting enjoyment and memories without the waste!

• Travel by Reindeer. Okay, not all of us have access to as green a travel option as flying reindeer, but there is a way to make up for all the carbon pollution generated from your holiday travel. Consider buying carbon offsets. Some airlines offer the opportunity to buy an offset as a fee on a ticket. Carbon offsets go towards funding projects that have long term carbon storage potential, such as reforestation and deforestation prevention programs.

Making delicious desserts for the holidays HOT FUDGE AND CHERRY TRIFFLE 1 (18.4 oz.) package Pillsbury™ Family Size Chocolate Fudge Brownie Mix 2/3 cup Crisco® Pure Vegetable Oil 2 large eggs 3/4 cup milk, divided 1 (4 serving size) package instant chocolate pudding & pie filling mix 1 (14 oz.) can Eagle Brand® Sweetened Condensed Milk 1 (12 oz.) container frozen whipped topping, thawed, divided 1 (21 oz.) can cherry pie filling, divided 1 (11.75 oz.) jar Smucker's® Hot Fudge Topping, divided Decorator sprinkles

PREPARE brownie mix according to package directions using oil, eggs and 1/4 cup milk instead of water. Bake in 13 x 9inch baking pan. Cool completely. Whisk pudding mix, sweetened condensed milk and remaining 1/2 cup milk in medium bowl until smooth. Reserve 1/2 cup whipped topping for garnish. Stir remaining whipped topping into pudding mixture until blended.

CRUMBLE half of the brownies into bottom of

a 14-cup trifle dish or large glass bowl. Top with half of pudding mixture. Place 2 tablespoons fudge topping in small heavy-duty resealable plastic bag; reserve for garnish. Heat remaining fudge topping according to the label directions. Spoon over pudding mixture in trifle dish. Reserve 1/4 cup cherry pie filling for garnish. Spoon remaining cherry filling over fudge topping. Crumble remaining brownies over fudge topping. Top with remaining pudding mixture.

SPOON reserved whipped topping on top of trifle. Garnish with reserved cherry pie filling.

Microwave bag of fudge topping on HIGH 7 to 10 seconds to warm. Cut a small corner off bag; drizzle over trifle. Chill 6 hours or overnight. Garnish with sprinkles before serving.

LEMON PIE 3 large egg yolks 1 (14 oz.) can Eagle Brand® Sweetened Condensed Milk 1/2 cup lemon juice 1 (6 oz.) prepared graham cracker crust Frozen whipped topping, thawed or whipped cream

Grated lemon peel

HEAT oven to 325°F. Beat egg yolks in medium bowl with mixer.

Add sweetened condensed milk and lemon juice until well mixed.

Pour into crust.

BAKE 30 to 35 minutes or until set. Remove from oven. Cool 1 hour.

Chill at least 3 hours.

SPREAD whipped topping or whipped cream over pie before serving.

Garnish with lemon peel, if desired.

For 9 oz. Extra Large Crust or Homemade 9inch Crust PREPARE according to recipe directions using 5 egg yolks, 2 (14 oz.) cans Eagle Brand® Sweetened Condensed Milk and 1 cup lemon juice.

Bake according to recipe directions.

HOT PUMPKIN TREATS 1 3/4 cups Pillsbury BEST™ All Purpose Flour 1/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar 1/3 cup sugar 1 cup cold butter 1 cup chopped nuts 1 (27 oz.) jar None Such® Ready-to-Use Classic Original Mincemeat Or None Such® Brandy and Rum Mincemeat 1 (15 oz.) can (2 cups)

pumpkin 1 (14 oz.) can Eagle Brand® Sweetened Condensed Milk 2 large eggs 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice 1/2 teaspoon salt

HEAT oven to 425°F. Combine flour, brown sugar and sugar in large bowl; cut in butter with pastry blender or 2 knives until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Stir in nuts.

RESERVE 1 1/2 cups crumb mixture; press remaining crumb mixture onto bottom of 13 x 9inch baking dish. Spoon mincemeat over crust.

COMBINE remaining ingredients in small bowl; mix well. Pour over mincemeat. Top with reserved crumb mixture.

BAKE 15 minutes; reduce oven to 350°F. Bake an additional 40 minutes or until golden brown around edges. Cool. Cut into squares. Serve warm or at room temperature, topped with ice cream, if desired.

HOLIDAY CUT-OUT COOKIES COOKIES 4 cups Pillsbury BEST™ All Purpose Flour

2 teaspoons baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 (14 oz.) can Eagle Brand® Sweetened Condensed Milk 1 cup butter, softened 1 cup powdered sugar, plus additional for rolling 1 large egg 1 tablespoon vanilla extract Crisco® Original NoStick Cooking Spray FROSTING 2 cups powdered sugar 1/8 teaspoon salt 3 tablespoons butter, softened 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract Or 1/4 teaspoon almond extract 2 tablespoons milk, plus additional as needed Food color Colored sugar or decorator sprinkles

COMBINE flour, baking powder and salt in small bowl. Beat sweetened condensed milk and butter in large bowl with electric mixer on low speed until smooth. Beat in 1 cup powdered sugar, egg and vanilla. Add flour mixture gradually.

Beat on low speed until combined. Divide dough into fourths. Wrap each with plastic wrap. Chill 2 hours.

HEAT oven to 350°F.

Coat cookie sheet with no-stick cooking spray.

Sprinkle counter surface with powdered sugar.

Roll out one portion of dough at a time to 1/8inch thickness. Cut with 2-inch cookie cutters.

Place 2 inches apart on cookie sheets. Chill and reroll dough as needed.

BAKE 7 to 9 minutes or until very light brown around edges. Cool.

For Frosting: COMBINE powdered sugar, salt, butter and extract until blended. Stir in enough milk to achieve spreading consistency.

Add food color, if desired. Spread on cookies. Top with colored sugar or decorator sprinkles.

STAINED-GLASS COOKIES PREPARE and roll dough as above. Line cookie sheets with foil.

Cut with 3-inch cookie cutters. Cut out holes for "stained glass" effect in each cookie with small cookie cutters. Place on cookie sheets. Fill holes with crushed hard candies in various colors.

BAKE 6 to 8 minutes or until candy has melted.

Cool 10 minutes. Remove cookies carefully from foil.
