In celebration of Jewish Pride, Love Jewish, a division of Yiddishkayt Initiative, will present a staged reading of playwright L M Feldman’s theatrical mosaic A People as their inaugural season presentation. The performance will take place on Monday, August 25th at 7:00 pm at Island City Stage.

Feldman holds up a mirror to 5,000 years of Jewish identity and history, reminding us that we are all descendants from somewhere, and we can

Sometimes hilarious and sometimes terrifyingly honest, A People’s ensemble will take on a mass of old and new-world personalities to create snippets of life the way we see it, the way we want it, and the way it is.

Utilizing the performing arts, media, publishing, education, language, and literature, the mission of Love Jewish is to advocate for Jewish Pride, Build Cultural Bridges and Challenge Antisemitism Through the Arts by promoting Jewish history and life, and their far-reaching impact on the contemporary world. “ALifeoftheParty”: TheRadicalJourneyOfAmySchechter

[1] Author and Journalist Dave Schechter [2] Available online at Amazon.Com, Bookshop.Org, BarnesandNoble.Com, ReaderHouse.Com, and other sites.

What propelled the daughter of a renowned Jewish scholar to join a movement on the fringe of American society? In a new book, “A Life of the Party,” Journalist Dave Schechter delves into the story of his great-aunt, who made Communism her way to repair the world.

An FBI informant labeled Amy Schechter “a regular tenminute egg” (as in hard-boiled). The New York Times called her “one of the most ardent among the New York radicals.” A Jewish columnist wrote that she was “one of the few genuinely idealistic Communists; she lives up to her ideals in her private life, sharing what she has with others less fortunate.”

The youngest of Solomon and Mathilde Roth Schechter’s three children was born in England, educated in the United States and, as a member of the Communist Party, devoted more than four decades, beginning in the early 1920s, to the struggles of working men and women.

“A Life of the Party” blends the historical record with narrative fiction fitting Amy Schechter’s life and times. Amy’s adventures took her to Russia — to a little-known colony of American Communists in Siberia and to the International Lenin School in Moscow — and across the United States, from coal fields and textile mills to docks and shipyards.

Amy reported on labor issues for Communist newspapers and other sympathetic publications. Her own name appeared in headlines and articles during the 1929 Loray Mill strike in Gastonia, North Carolina — one of the most violent of its time — where she was an organizer and one of 16 defendants tried for murder when the police chief was shot to death.

“Under different circumstances, as a Jew visiting from out of town, Amy likely would have received an invitation to a Passover Seder the night of April 24, 1929. Instead, she was released from jail that morning after her second arrest in two days after deliberately violating the city’s new ban on parading,” Schechter writes. It’s also likely that the Jews who owned mills near Gastonia would not have wanted Amy at their table.

The book project began in 1999, with a letter that Schechter’s father received from an expert on Soviet activities in the United States, asking about a man with whom Amy had a relationship. Along with the letter came three pages of a heavilyredacted FBI report. That piqued Schechter’s interest.

His research included using the Freedom of Information Act to obtain hundreds of pages of FBI reports. A CNN colleague in Moscow unearthed a document from Soviet archives. Schechter combed through articles that reported on Amy’s activities and read dozens that she wrote. He had enlightening conversations with two 88-year-old comrades who had their own memories of Amy.

“Were she around today, I have no doubt that Amy would

KetubahRenaissance: TheArtfulModernRevivalOfTheJewishMarriageContract

The Jewish Publication Society (JPS) is proud to announce the publication of Ketubah Renaissance: The Artful Modern Revival of the Jewish Marriage Contract by Michael Shapiro.

Illuminating the con temporary revival of the Jewish marriage contract, Ketubah Renaissance relays the storied history of this beloved document (known in Hebrew as a ketubah) through the present day and show cases sixty of the most innovative and beautiful ketubot of the last half century.

Originally created 2,500 years ago as a uni lateral marriage contract stating what a groom would provide for his bride, the ketubah evolved from the tenth century onward into a richly decorated expres sion of love and commit ment. Starting in the late 1960s a modern sensibil ity took root. Influenced by Jewish life and North American society at large, hundreds of artists and calligraphers began to imprint their unique aes thetic onto each ketubah design—a movement Judaica scholar Shalom Sabar calls “a veritable renaissance of the illu minated ketubbah”— while also updating the original Aramaic text to express contemporary values. “Thoughtful, inspiring, ingenious, inventive, playful, profound… Adjectives fail me. Ketubah Renaissance is a gorgeous testament to the creative, aesthetic, and spiritual health of Jewish life in the late twentieth and early twenty-first century. The images summon the ‘mazal tovs’ of weddings past, present, and future.”–Anita Diamant, author of twelve books, including The Red Tent and The Jewish Wedding Now Couples and families with upcoming weddings as well as officiating clergy, educators, aficionados of Jewish culture, scholars, and others will discover the evolving history of the ketubah in all its facets: its artforms, texts, scripts, iconography, production

processes, and technological innovations. A curated, chronological ketubah gallery brings readers up close to sixty influential ketubot and the artists who created them—a colorful cornucopia

of breakthroughs that epitomize the ketubah renaissance.

“This stunning collection of marriage contracts in many media, from paper cuts to fabric, accompanied by an accessible history, is a must-have for anyone who loves Jewish ritual art.” –Jodi Eichler-Levine, Berman Professor of Jewish Civilization at Lehigh University and author of Painted Pomegranates and Needlepoint Rabbis: How Jews Craft Resilience and Create Community

“Clear, well organized, and thoroughly researched, Ketubah Renaissance will make an outstanding gift to a couple soon to be married, providing ideas for the text and illustration of their own

marriage contract as well as teaching about the history of ketubot. For rabbis, educators, and scholars as well, it’s an exceptional addition to the existing volumes on historical ketubot.” –Dorion Liebgott, editor of Art and Tradition: Treasures of Jewish Life

ImmigrationandAssimilation DiscussionGroups: DiscoveryourFamilyHeritage

Do you know where your grandparents were living and how they raised their childrenSomeday, when you become a parent and your children ask you about family history, what will you be able to tell them? The Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Miami presents, Immigration and Assimilation Discussion Groups: Discover your Family Heritage.

The search for one’s roots is a hobby. Most hobbies require one to learn new skills and improve those by practice.A hobby requires the investment of time, and as much money as one could comfortably spend.

What are the returns from these investments?Discovery of people who came before you and others with whom your family lostcontact. In the old days most people lived and died within a small area where they were born.A child grew up knowing all of their aunts, uncles, cousins and of course, their grandparents.

Discovery is a gradual process. Those whose hobby is Genealogy, often feel victorious and happy each time they find something new and interesting. It is a joyful series of breakthroughs.

In our time, families are often scattered all over the country or even globally.“America is a nation of immigrants.”Native Americans kept their stories either through word-of-mouth, or by recording it through art and other permanent recordings.

Those who are descendants of immigrants, often had lost contact with relatives left behind in a generation or two. Not only the distance becomes a barrier, but the language as well.Good news: with modern tools, such as the internet and various archives much of the history of a family can be recovered.

Have you heard of the Television Program:“Finding Your Roots!”Professor Henry Louis Gates of Harvard interviews two

or three guests in each episode on public television, and then presents each one with the guest’s family tree along with stories discovered from various sources.

A few examples from past programs:A Cuban born Fashion Designer learned about his centuries old roots from the Canary Islands, the ancestry of an African-American celebrity, a football star turned tv host, was traced to Charlemagne (748-814), the first emperor of Western Europe. The hostess of “Fresh Air” on public radio had no idea about her relatives who perished in the Holocaust;a well-known television news anchor discovered his roots both in Africa and in Western Europe.

How is it done and who can do it?1. Interview your elders, record it, or take lots of notes.2. Ask and search for your family’s records, e.g., Birth, Marriage and Death Documents, Diplomas, Immigration Records, Union Cards, even Criminal Records.3. Ask for photos and search both the albums and the shoeboxes.4. The internet seems to be a bottomless well of family data.Census Records are free, the Mormon Church Records are accessible, Public Records of family events are open to all.5. Genealogy websites; such as: Myheritage, Ancestry, etc. charge a fee but are often accessible for free at Public Libraries.6. DNA Analysis is a powerful tool and its cost has declined considerably over the years.7. Newspaper Archives are a rich source of Birth, Marriage, and Death Announcements.

What to do with all the data you find? Some people focus on building a family tree, others collect stories and produce a family log. Some write a history of the family.Others use the research results to connect with distant relatives.Along with learning about people, most Genealogists also learn a lot of history, geography, politics, etc.One of the joys is to travel to places where

one’s ancestors lived and visit their former homes, Schools, Cemeteries, etc.One may get to connect with lost relatives.

Genealogy Is Like A Sport:

The more you search, the better you get at it.Join a group or club. Learn from experienced members.Ask your school to offer a class. It is not only about research, but a social activity, where people with similar interests become your friends and helpers.

Let me introduce my two groups:the Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Miamiandthe Genealogy Society of Greater Miami, Inc. The JGSGM Had been meeting monthly at the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, North of Downtown Miami, but since the epidemic started, we Zoom. The GSGM had been meeting at the Pinecrest Branch of the Miami-DadePublic Library. Visitors are welcome at both groups!

Activities of the JGSGM:At each meeting there is a speaker. The topics range from “How to…” to “How I found my xyz.” There are interesting presentations about specific national or social groups, their history, traditions, customs, etc. There are workshops for beginners and for anyone interested in specific tools. There is an active “cemetery group” Who photograph, catalog and map cemeteries.

Activities of the JGSGM:Excellent training sessions about “How to…”Both for beginners and advanced researchers’ talks by visiting speakers about a wide variety of topics.

National And International Meetings

There are many Genealogy groups and subgroups with special interests. For instance, there are groups interested in a country or area of origin, or in a period of history, such as the American Civil War, or the World Wars, etc. These meetings take place at different places and they are very interesting, But quite expensive considering the cost of travel, accommodations, registration and the temptation to buy “stuff,” souvenirs, tools, books and so on… The speakers and group events are very high quality and provide the opportunity to meet and consult with world class experts.

On behalf of both societies, we invite you to test the waters by coming to meet our members who would be happy to discuss any subject in relation to Genealogy research. Thanks for listening! Any questions?

TimelyInsightsFrom PhilosopherMartinBuberIn AYearWithMartinBuber: Wisdom On The Weekly Torah Portion

Rabbi Dennis S. Ross is pleased to be launching a promotional tour in support of his 2021 publication, A Year with Martin Buber: Wisdom on the Weekly Torah Portion (The Jewish Publication Society), winner of the Academy of Parish Clergy’s Top Ten Book List for Parish Ministry for “display[ing] excellence and helpfulness to clergy, who are encouraged to add the books to their libraries.”

The teachings of the great twentieth-century Jewish thinker Martin Buber empower us to enter a spiritual dimension that often passes unnoticed in the daily routine. In A Year with Martin Buber, the first Torah commentary to focus on his life’s work, we experience the fifty-four weekly Torah portions and eleven Jewish holidays through Buber’s eyes.

While best known for the spiritual concept of the I-Thou relationship between people, Buber graced us with other fundamentals, including Over Against, Afterglow, Will and Grace, Reification, Inclusion, and Imagine the Real. And his life itself— for example, Buber’s defiance of the Nazis, his call for JewishArab reconciliation, and his protest of Adolf Eichmann’s execution—modeled these teachings in action.

As part of his new book tour, Ross will discuss how these teachings are more relevant than ever on the backdrop of mount-

distills the theology of Martin Buber..., a consequential Jewish thinker whose focus on making human interactions meaningful influenced Martin Luther King Jr.’s ‘Letter from a Birmingham Jail.’ ...An invaluable entry point to a humanist thinker who sought to identify, build, and preserve ‘holiness in our daily routines’ by putting people, rather than objects, first.”

Rabbi Dennis Ross demonstrates Buber’s roots in Jewish thought and breaks new ground by explaining the broader scope of Buber’s life and work in a clear, conversational voice. He quotes from the weekly Torah portion; draws lessons from Jewish commentators; and sets Buber’s related words in context with Buber’s remarkable life story, Hasidic tales, and writing. A wide variety of anecdotal illustrations from Buber as well as the author’s life encourages each of us to “hallow the everyday” and

seek out “spirituality hiding in plain sight.”

“What a pleasure A Year with Martin Buber is! People of all faiths with an interest in the Bible and bringing ‘divine wonder to the routine of daily life’ will delight in having this inspirational book as a companion.”—Rev. Debra W. Haffner, Unitarian Universalist Church in Reston, Virginia

Always Tired?

Snoring Is No Laughing Matter!

It may be more than just an annoying habit, it may be a sign of Sleep Apnea

What Exactly is Sleep Apnea?

When the muscles that control the upper airway relax, some people begin to snore. When the airway becomes completely blocked and the person temporarily stops breathing, this is an episode of “Obstructive Apnea.” Each Apnea event may last for a few seconds or up to a couple minutes or more. Events may happen frequently - even several hundred times a night.

Can This Condition Be Treated? How?

There are many effective treatments for snoring. A widely accepted treatment for Sleep Apnea is oral appliance therapy. An oral device custom fit by your dentist is designed to keep your airway open and help prevent Apneas.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine

Recommends an oral appliance as a first-line treatment option for patients with mild to moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), and for those with severe OSA who either decline CPAP Therapy or are unable to successfully use CPAP Therapy. This treatment does not involve medications or surgery and helps hundreds of thousands of people all over the world enjoy sleeping safely for a healthier life. Many experience the benefits quickly - often during the first night of use.

ZOACondemnsFrance/Macron’sRecognition ofaNon-Existent,IllegalPalestinianTerrorState

Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) National President Morton A. Klein released the following statement:

The ZOA condemns French President Emmanuel Macron’s “recognition” this past Thursday of a non-existent, illegal Palestinian terror state. Macron’s “recognition” of a State of Palestine rewards the Hamas and PLO/PA (Palestinian Authority) terror regimes; incites and promotes Arab/Islamic terrorism by sending a message that massacring 1,200 Jewish men, women, children and babies pays; violates Israeli sovereign rights and international law which guarantees under the San Remo agreement, UN Charter Article 80 and many more international agreements, the right of the Jewish people the areas that such a state may include and forbids the UN to transfer any part of Palestine to a non-Jewish entity; endangers Israel; tramples over the will of the Israeli people and its democratically elected officials and Knesset (all of which overwhelmingly oppose a Palestinian state); will incite further attacks on France’s beleaguered Jewish community; and could encourage other nations to follow Macron’s despicable example.

It is sickening that while Hamas is still torturing and holding innocent Israelis hostage in the bowels of Hamas’ terror tunnels, and while the Palestinian Authority is still inciting and paying Arab terrorists hundreds of thousands of dollars per year to murder innocent Jews (“pay to slay”), that Macron is rewarding the Hamas and PA/PLO terror regimes. Apparently, France’s large Muslim population (estimated at ten percent of the population) and his 19% dismal approval rating has resulted in Macron losing any sense of decency, morality or respect for international law. And under Law a state cannot be established unless it has stability of institutions, democratic policies, rule of law, respect for human rights and protects minorities. Hamas in Gaza and the Palestinian Authority fulfill none of these requirements for statehood recognition. In fact, France’s own EU would forbid such an entity to join even the EU, let alone the UN. Furthermore, it would be a beggar state as Gaza/PA only survives due to the largesse of Iran and other countries.

Israelis and hostage-taking. This is clearly not a population that would live in peace with Israel. Macron is seeking to strengthen the very same people who are cheering the most terrible genocidal atrocities against Jews.

ZOA is encouraged that top U.S. and Israeli government officials and independent experts condemned Macron’s “recognition” of a PA state. Here are some of their important statements:

Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s tweet: “The United States strongly rejects @EmmanuelMacron’s plan to recognize a Palestinian state at the @UN general assembly. This reckless decision only serves Hamas propaganda and sets back peace. It is a slap in the face to the victims of October 7th.”

President Trump statement to press: “What he [Macron] says doesn’t matter. . . . that statement doesn’t carry weight.”

Sen. Lindsay Graham, R-S.C. tweet: “The French government’s decision to recognize a Palestinian state is curious and disturbing on multiple levels. I am certain this will embolden Hamas and make a ceasefire more difficult. In addition, here are

torturing, kidnapping & burning. He [Macron] is incentivizing and encouraging jihadists everywhere, including in France.”

Richard L. Cravatts tweet: @rcravatts “Macron–and the other international leaders who have done this–are “recognizing” nothing, a fiction. What are the borders of this state? Who is its leader? What type of government will it have Who are the citizens? What social, economic, and cultural cohesion will it have?”

PM Netanyahu tweet: “We strongly condemn President Macron’s decision to recognize a Palestinian state next to Tel Aviv in the wake of the October 7 massacre. Such a move rewards terror and risks creating another Iranian proxy, just as Gaza became. A Palestinian state in these conditions would be a launch pad to annihilate Israel — not to live in peace beside it. Let’s be clear: the Palestinians do not seek a state alongside Israel; they seek a state instead of Israel.”

Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Minister Yariv Levin: Called the move “a black stain on France’s history and a direct boost to terrorism.” He added: “The Land of Israel belongs to the people of Israel, and even President Macron’s declaration will not change that.” Levin called for Israel to apply sovereignty over Judea and Samaria and the Jordan Valley, calling it “a just and historic response to the shameful decision by the President of France.”

some questions that come to mind. Who’s in charge? What are the borders and boundaries? What is the governance structure? Does Hamas stay involved politically or militarily? Is the West Bank and Gaza part of a single state? Are they allowed to have an army? Does the education system change Other than these few missing details, it seems like a foolproof plan!”

U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee statement (on June 1, after Macron previously promoted the idea of “recognizing” a ‘State of Palestine”): “It’s incredibly inappropriate in the midst of a war that Israel is dealing with to go out and present something that I think increasingly Israelis are steadfast against. Oct. 7 changed a lot of things. If France is really so determined to see a Palestinian state, I have a suggestion for them—carve out a piece of the French Riviera and create a Palestinian state. They are welcome to do that, but they are not welcome to impose that kind of pressure on a sovereign nation. And I find it revolting that they think they have the right to do such a thing.”

Notably, today, Palestinian Media Watch reported that PA President Mahmoud Abbas’ (whose Fatah Charter calls for the destruction of Israel) senior adviser on Religious Affairs and Islamic Relations Mahmoud Al-Habbash stated that “everyone” (every Palestinian) “cheered and praised” the October 7 massacre of 1,200 innocent Israelis and wounding of another 5,000

Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark. Cotton tweet: “This [Macron’s recognition announcement] is a shameful endorsement of terrorists. The best way for this conflict to end is to back Israel in its righteous mission of rescuing the hostages and defeating Hamas.”

Richard Kemp tweet: @COLRICHARDKEMP “Macron planning to recognize a Palestinian state, rewarding the thousands of terrorists who invaded Israel, murdering, raping,

U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee latest tweet: (July 25) “Macron’s unilateral ‘declaration’ of a ‘Palestinian’ state didn’t say WHERE it would be,” Huckabee wrote in a post on X. “I can now exclusively disclose that France will offer the French Riviera & the new nation will be called ‘Franc-en-Stine.’”

Pierre Griselin (French ex-marine and ex-mayor) tweet: “The vast majority of French people disapprove of this announcement by #Macron Thank you for distinguishing between Hamas collaborators and French people who are friends of the Jewish people.”

HowEating Together Benefits YourFamily

Sharing a meal offers far more than a full stomach; the benefits of eating together extend well beyond the dinner table.

In the “2025 World Happiness Report,” evidence shows that sharing meals has a substantial impact on an individual’s wellbeing. Those who regularly eat with others report higher life satisfaction and display higher levels of social support, positive reciprocity and less loneliness.

Learn more about how sharing a meal can improve your family’s overall well-being with these insights from the experts at the FMI Foundation and their “2025 Family Meals Barometer survey,” which delivers research, collaboration and education to address food safety, health and nutrition concerns.

Civil and Respectful Interactions

In a world full of distractions, it may come as no surprise the “2025 Family Meals Barometer” survey found poor communication is a leading concern among parents, more worrisome than schoolwork or chores.

More than two-thirds of respondents expressed a belief that civility in America is worse today compared to 10 years ago, but 74% said family meals are a great time to have and teach respectful interactions. Frequent family meals create a safe environment for families to discuss thornier societal issues.

Better Nutrition

Numerous studies have shown families who eat more meals together have healthier eating habits and better diets in general. Family meals at home typically make it easier to fill plates with food from each food group. What’s more, parents who prepare well-balanced meals and model healthy food choices allow children to mirror and adopt similar habits.

Improved Family Function

In the “2025 Family Meals Barometer” survey, respondents cited having more time to spend together and family meals as the top two ways they feel more connected to family and loved ones. With busy school and extracurricular schedules, many families are hard-pressed to find quality time together without distractions. Gathering around the dinner table is an opportunity to connect with one another and talk about what’s happening at work, school and with friends.

Better Grades at School

Numerous factors affect students’ academic performance, but eating together as a family helps reinforce many of the variables thought to influence student success. More nutritious meals play a role in stronger cognitive function. Multiple researchers found

that children who are part of families that eat together regularly tend to have a stronger vocabulary and higher grades.

Improved Mental Health

Another way family meals benefit students at school and beyond is stronger mental and emotional health. In several independent studies, researchers found a positive correlation between family meals and self-esteem, psychosocial outcomes and other markers of mental health.

Learn how gathering around the dinner table supports your family’s nutritional, social, mental and emotional health at: fmi.org/family-mealsmovement.

Make Dinner Prep a Family Affair

The benefits of eating together as a family don’t have to wait until everyone is at the table. During dinner prep, parents and children have a chance to work elbow-to-elbow and talk about their days. When children participate in preparing healthy food, they may be more interested in eating it. As an added bonus, kids who take part in food preparation enjoy the benefits of building their own life skills.

DIY dishes that put kids in charge of what goes on their plates can be a fun way to bring the family together and make meal prep easy. You can customize salad kits with a selection of protein options, create your own personal pizzas or serve a bar-style dinner such as nachos, baked potatoes or tacos that let each family member choose their own toppings.

In an extraordinary interview now published on The Times of Israel blog (link), 96-year-old Holocaust survivor Clara GarbonRadnoti has issued an uncompromising call for the return of all Holocaust-era looted art still held by Hungarian museums. Clara’s voice is a rare, living link to those who survived both the war and the theft of their family’s cultural heritage.

Clara lost two paintings by renowned Hungarian artists Mihály Munkácsy and János Vaszary during the Nazi occupation of Hungary. She spent nearly 20 years translating 180 reels of Hungarian wartime records at the Zekelman Holocaust Center outside Detroit. These documents expose the systematic, stateorchestrated looting of Jewish-owned art in 1944 — including works by Raphael, Rembrandt, Sisley, Munkácsy, and Vaszary — and identify the Jewish families from whom the art was stolen, as well as the institutions that received it.

The Holocaust Art Recovery Initiative calls on the Hungarian government and cultural institutions to return all looted works, not merely provide documentation or engage in limited discussions. Clara’s demand is for complete restitution — a call echoed by survivors, historians, and advocates worldwide.

Tamarac’sTBTST TempleTakes Community ActionToHeart

Last week on August 17th, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Noon, Tamarac’s Temple Beth Torah Sha’aray Tzedek (TBTST), once again demonstrated its commitment to the greater community through their Mitzvah Day/Open House communal event. The word “mitzvah” is Hebrew for commandment, but it has a well-known secondary meaning: an act of kindness or good deed. Tamarac’s Temple Beth Torah Sha’aray Tzedek (TBTST) is committed to performing good acts of kindness, ‘Mitzvot,” following the commandment in Leviticus 19:18: “love your neighbor as yourself.” Activities reflect TBTST’s ongoing commitment to “tzedakah,” charity, and “Tikkun Olam,” repairing the world through performing virtuous deeds.

Rabbis Rami Pavolotzky and Daniela Szuster explain the underlying source of Mitzvah Day: “Tzedakah” the mitzvah of philanthropy and charity actually translates as “justice.” Tzedakah goes beyond financial donations to include actions and contributions of time, effort, and awareness. Most people are familiar with Jewish charities supporting schools, hospitals and social action globally, not just in the Jewish world. The ‘mitzvah of tzedakah’, justice through social action, not just financial transactions, is an integral part of Judaism.”

This year’s Mitzvah Day/Open House brought together the TBTST “family” with both visitors seeking information on the synagogue, and with our many non-Jewish friends and neighbors, all united by performing acts of kindness. TBTST Clergy, Educators and Leadership will be on hand to answer any questions about the synagogue while joining in Mitzvah activities. Tours and registration for the synagogue’s Early Childhood Center and Religious School were offered.

You didn’t have to be Jewish to be a part of doing Mitzvot! Adults and children are welcome to participate in a variety of projects.

2025 Mitzvah Day projects included:

• Making Greeting Cars for the Daniel Cantor Senior Center

• Assembling 100’s of Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwiches for Craig’s Pantry in Plantation

• Collecting new children’s clothing donations for JAFCO

• Making and packaging cookies for Tamarac’s First Responders

• Collecting clothing for Veterans’ Homes and for Women in Distress of Broward County

• Collecting new and gently used children & teen shoes for distribution by In Jacob’s Shoes

• Helping fur babies by making fleece blankets for The Humane Society

• Packing items previously collected for U.S. Troops through Operation Shoebox

• Giving Blood donations at the Big Red Bus in the synagogue parking lot

This year, participants had the additional opportunity of connecting with individual Israeli citizens, showing personal support to many in the war-traumatized country by establishing new rela-

tionships with both adults and children there. Through a special alliance with Israel’s growing Masorti-Conservative movement, participants will be able to engage in a new Pen-Pal program, con necting with Israelis of all ages. In addition, children from TBTST’s Religious School and its Early Childhood Center cre ated friendship bracelets for their new Israeli friends.

ToddPatkin,AuthorofFindingHappiness,Invests$5MillioninWorldZionistVillage

Prominent Massachusetts philanthropist and author of Finding Happiness, Todd Patkin, has announced a transformative $5 million philanthropic investment in the World Zionist Village, a planned 16-acre campus that will become the first global hub for Zionists everywhere.

The $350 million World Zionist Village, to be located in Be’er Sheva, the heart of Israel’s South, will feature state-of-theart centers for Zionist education, leadership training, dialogue, and community-building. Patkin’s generous contribution will expand the Village’s reach, fund innovative programming, and empower the next generation of Zionist leaders.

His philanthropic commitment will be recognized through a “Patkin Pathway,” a prominent path leading to the Village’s main entrance. “I have always believed that happiness and hope are deeply interconnected,” said Patkin. “The World Zionist Village represents an extraordinary opportunity to bring people together in celebration of our shared heritage, working together toward a future filled with promise for Zionism and the Jewish people.”

Patkin, who grew up in Needham, Massachusetts, graduated from Tufts University before spending nearly two decades successfully growing his family’s business. Following the company’s

acquisition by Advance Auto Parts in 2005, he shifted his focus to his true passions: philanthropy, family, community, and helping others find greater happiness. His bestselling book, Finding Happiness, shares his insights and life lessons, inspiring readers worldwide to live with more purpose, joy, and resilience.

“Todd’s vision and generosity are nothing short of inspiring,” said Russell F. Robinson, CEO of Jewish National Fund-USA. “He’s not just a supporter—he’s a catalyst for change. His spark has ignited the imaginations of millions around the world. Todd understands our vision and plays a vital role in bringing it to life. The Patkin Pathway, bearing his name at the entrance of the Village, will stand as a welcoming gateway for the global community—a pathway to the world.”

Patkin’s major philanthropic investment in the Village reflects his deep-rooted commitment to Jewish values, community empowerment, and the enduring dream of a vibrant future for the land and people of Israel.

During a recent visit, Patkin met with Robinson along with Ira Green, CEO of the World Zionist Village; and Boaz Meir, the Village’s International Development Director. Together, they reviewed the architectural master plan and development vision created by HQ Architects. The group also met with the Mayor of

Be’er Sheva, Ruvik Danilovich, who expressed enthusiastic support for the Village and shared his belief in its potential to positively impact the city’s ecosystem and its global significance.

“This village will transform how people perceive Be’er Sheva, the capital of the Negev,” said Mayor Danilovich. “The village carries a vital mission: to attract young people from across the globe to this historic city. How fitting that it will rise in Be’er Sheva, the city of our forefather Abraham, where our shared destiny began. A strong Negev means a strong Israel. Through your vision, motivation, and leadership, you’re strengthening both the Negev and Israel itself.”

In times of adversity, the smallest acts of kindness can yield the greatest impact. As a trusted name in philanthropy, Jewish National Fund-USA and its partners (donors) are proud to show they care for the members of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), first responders, and their families through two meaningful initiatives: Israel Support Packages and Operation Hug.

Through the organization’s Israel Support Packages initiative, thoughtfully curated products sourced directly from small Israeli businesses in the country’s North and South—many of which are members of Jewish National Fund-USA’s Small Business Association are gifted to Israelis in uniform and their families. From artisanal snacks to handcrafted goods, these items embody the spirit of resilience and Zionist pride. Every box not only uplifts a hero on the frontlines—it sustains a local shop owner, tradesperson, or artisan working to bolster Israel’s economy during these challenging times.

“Our brave soldiers, firefighters, medics, and emergency workers are not just defending Israel—they’re protecting the soul of our homeland and ensuring our future,” said Jewish National Fund-USA President, Deb Lust Zaluda. “By sending an Israel

Support Package, you’re conveying a powerful message: You are not alone. Am Yisrael stands with you.”

Supporters don’t need to know the recipients personally; however, they can include a message in English that will be translated into Hebrew and placed with the package. Whether it’s a pilot stationed in the South or a first responder in the North, your contribution ensures they feel the encouragement of an entire global community behind them.

The initiative is part of Jewish National Fund-USA’s broader Israel Resilience Campaign, where proceeds support critical Infrastructure, therapeutic services, and economic support in Israel’s most vulnerable communities.

Jewish National Fund-USA Support Packages

Jewish National Fund-USA is also proud to support Operation Hug – the brainchild of Nefesh B’Nefesh and a first-ofits-kind program – that provides a round-trip airline ticket for one parent of any lone soldier serving in an active combat unit, from anywhere in the world to visit their child in Israel (parents are asked to make a nominal contribution toward the airfare).

For many of Israel’s 5,000 lone soldiers, the battlefield is not

only dangerous but also isolating. The emotional burden becomes overwhelming without family nearby to offer comfort or reassurance. Operation Hug addresses these needs with action. Since it started in late 2023, the initiative has reunited over 1,200 families from more than 60 countries, each reunion providing a moment of healing and humanity amid the chaos.

Jewish National Fund-USA Nefesh B’Nefesh Task Force Chair, Deborah Riegel, said, “Operation Hug embodies the very soul of what Jewish National Fund-USA stands for—ensuring that every individual who defends our homeland feels the figurative embrace of a grateful people, and more importantly, the literal embrace of family.”

Jewish National Fund-USA continues to attain the highest possible rating by the leading charity watchdog, Charity Navigator. The Better Business Bureau also recommends the organization as a trustworthy philanthropy.

With a $3,600 gift, you can sponsor an Operation Hug reunion. For more information, visit: jnf.org/nefesh, call: 800.JNF.0099, or email: customerservice@jnf.org. To send an Israel Support Package, visit: jnf.org/store.

The Life of Anne Frank

Annelies Marie “Anne” Frank was born on June 12th, 1929, in Frankfurt, Germany. At just four and a half years old, she and her family fled to Amsterdam in the Netherlands, seeking refuge from the rising tide of Nazi persecution. For a time, they lived in relative peace, but everything changed with the Nazi Invasion of the Netherlands in May 1940. As anti-Jewish laws intensified, Anne and her family—father Otto, mother Edith and sister Margot—went into hiding in 1942.

Their sanctuary, known today as the “Secret Annex,” was a concealed space behind a bookcase in the building where Otto Frank worked. Over the next two years, Anne chronicled her experiences, fears, hopes and reflections in a diary given to her for her 13th birthday. Her writing provides an intimate, poignant and often surprisingly optimistic view of life in hiding, reflecting her resilience, humor and unwavering dreams.

On August 4th, 1944, the Frank family’s hiding place was discovered. They were arrested by the Gestapo and eventually deported to Auschwitz. Later, in November 1944, Anne and her sister Margot were transferred to the Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp, where both tragically perished just months before the war ended.

visitors closer to Anne’s world. One of the highlights of the exhibition is a detailed model of the Secret Annex, providing an intimate look at the confined space where Anne and her family lived in hiding. This visual representation allows visitors to grasp the daily challenges faced by those in hiding—the lack of privacy, the constant fear of discovery and the small joys that sustained them.

A centerpiece of the exhibition is a Limited Edition copy of Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl. Only 350 of these num-

Otto Frank, the sole survivor of the family, returned to Amsterdam after the war. There, he discovered that Anne’s diary had been safeguarded by two of his former employees, Miep Gies and Bep Voskuijl. Recognizing the power of Anne’s words and her desire to be a writer, he took the extraordinary step of publishing her diary in 1947. First released in Dutch, it was translated into English in 1952 under the title The Diary of a Young Girl. The book has since been translated into over 70 languages, making Anne’s story a cornerstone of Holocaust education and a universal symbol of the human spirit.

This rare edition is signed by both the renowned artist Joseph Goldyne and the book’s designer, Barry Mosner, making it a valuable and deeply symbolic artifact.

Why Anne Frank’s Story Still Matters

The impact of Anne Frank’s diary cannot be overstated. More than just a historical document, it is a testament to the enduring power of the human spirit, a reminder of the horrors of prejudice and intolerance and a call for compassion and understanding. Anne’s words resonate with readers of all ages, as she speaks not only of fear and suffering but also of hope, dreams and the unbreakable belief in human goodness.

In today’s world, where discrimination and persecution still exist, Anne’s diary continues to serve as a beacon of awareness and education. The exhibition challenges visitors to reflect on

“ABanker’sJourney”NowPublished OnFourContinentsInFourLanguages

With Its Publication in Israel, the Acclaimed Biography of Edmond J. Safra Is Now Available in English, French, Hebrew, and Portuguese

From Beirut to Brazil, Geneva to Jerusalem, the story of Edmond J. Safra is captivating readers around the globe.

In the image of its extraordinary subject—once hailed as “the greatest banker of his generation” by a former president of the World Bank—A Banker’s Journey: How Edmond J. Safra Built a Global Financial Empire has now reached a new milestone: its publication in Israel marks its fourth language and fourth continent.

This internationally acclaimed biography, authored by Financial Journalist and Historian Daniel Gross, is more than just the story of a brilliant financier—it is a sweeping portrait of resilience, vision, and global legacy. With exclusive access to Safra’s personal archives, Gross takes readers deep into the life of a man who began his banking career at 15 when he was sent by his father from Beirut to Milan and went on to build an empire that stretched from Milan to São Paulo, Geneva to New York.

Published in English in 2022, in Portuguese in 2023, in French in 2024, and now in Hebrew in 2025, the biography has captivated a global readership—earning best-seller status in Brazil and critical acclaim from international media:

‘Safra represented the best of the ‘old school of bankers’ who espoused two fundamental rules: ‘Do not risk funds that depositors have entrusted to you. And…know your customer.’”

– Washington Independent Review of Books

“The journey of the Rockefeller of Geneva” — Le Temps

“Edmond J. Safra: A legend in his time” — The Jerusalem Report

“Wonderfully written… the first biography of financial prodigy

Edmond J. Safra” — Actualité Juive

“A book to decipher the man who called his banks his children” — Brazil Journal

“A compelling and fascinating read” — The Association of Jewish Libraries (US)

Discover the story that spans generations and geographies at: www.abankersjourney.com.

Through Gross’s vivid storytelling, readers discover Safra’s oldschool banking values—“Never risk your depositors’ funds. And always know your customer.”—built trust in uncertain times and shaped the global financial landscape. They also encounter a man of deep faith and philanthropy, who gave generously to Jewish communities and humanitarian causes worldwide.

Gross, whose own family traces its roots to Aleppo like Safra’s, reflects:

“In a way, the book is following Edmond Safra’s own journey around the world. He was born in Beirut, spoke seven languages, and built institutions that transcended borders. Everywhere I travel—whether in Brazil, Switzerland, France, or Israel—I meet people who were personally touched by his legacy. That’s what makes telling his story so meaningful.”

A Banker’s Journey is more than a business biography—it’s an exploration of heritage, identity, and the power of one man to shape institutions, lives, and history itself.
