Gaming and resorts need to be part of the future of South Floridaʼs recovery and growth

Larry Blustein

When it comes to casino gaming, and who gets it, I have admit that I remain

quite confused about what the heck is going on. After another "bozo" tried to roadblock our grand opportunity to attract more casinos and upgrades at the ones we have, I am officially mad. Close to taking people apart and naming names of those who continue to fight progress. We are in the worst economy of all our lives, where the unemployment is staggering, and the numbers continue to

rise. The crime is soaring through the roof. Is there something we are doing that may not be getting the attention of those in Tallahassee? We need the door to be open wider for casinos in this state – basically in our area and into Miami-Dade County. The most influential areas in the state, and one of the most diverse in the country, needs to have a pickme-up financially, and casinos would pretty

The Periodontist is responsible for doing gum surgery and treatment, implants and bone grafts. The Endodontist at Dental Options performs the root canals treatments with a powerful microscope. Dental Optionsʼ Prosthodontist specializes in full mouth reconstructions and challenging cosmetic procedures.

From the moment you arrive at Dental Options, you are greeted with smiling faces waiting to help answer all your questions.

IMPLANTS Many people donʼt know what implants are. An implant is a titanium piece that goes inside the bone. The bone grows around the threads of the implant during a 3 to 4 months period. The patient returns to the office and a crown or a bridge is then fitted on top of the implant(s).

has started a huge campaign. At Dental Options, they encourage every one of their patients to have an oral cancer test administered. The patient rinses with a solution and the dentist will examine the inside of the mouth with a special light wearing dark glasses. They can detect any pre-cancerous tissue that cannot be detected with the normal eye. The beauty of Dental Options is that all the Dentists and Dentistry specialists work together in the same office. They are committed and consult with each other, providing the patients with all the options.

SERVICES OFFERED Gentle and quality care is paramount at Dental Options, where dental insurances are accepted, and where you will find friendly and qualified multilingual staff. The beauty of being a patient of Dental Options is that eight dental specialists are available under one roof. In addition, sedation is available for patients who are anxious. Dr. Gordon said, “At Dental Options, we have General and Cosmetic Dentists as well as several specialists who offer these specialties: Periodontics, Orthodontics, Endodontics, Oral Surgery and Prosthodontics. Along with our professional team, our offices have six Oral Hygienists. Therefore Dental Options can provide all dental services that the patient needs: from regular cleaning to a complete smile makeover, including clear, ceramic or metal braces, implants, root canals, crown & bridge, veneers, dentures, etc.” Looking for dental services does not get any easier than this, especially when you need to see a dentist im-

mediately. Dental Optionsʼ offices are also open six days a week with later hours until 8:00 PM. Patients with emergencies are seen the same day. There is a 24 hours answering service. DIGITAL X-RAYS Advances in digital X-rays and computer applications enable each dentist to observe and understand the structure of the teeth, gums and bone formation in greater detail. When digital X-rays are taken, the patient is exposed to less radiation and the process is quicker. Dentists can zoom in and focus in depth. Digital is the wave of the future; standard X-rays are limited in comparison. Dr. Gordon continued, “We view the images and can take measurements and enhance with computer by adding color and 3-dimentional views. This really helps us with diagnosis, preventive dentistry and eliminates overlooking anything.” ORTHODONTICS DEPARTMENT Dental Optionsʼ Orthodontist is busy fitting braces for teenagers and young adults. Ask about Invisalign: transparent removable braces that are custom made for the patientʼs teeth alignment. These clear custom made aligners can be taken out to eat, brush and floss. Hallandale Beach experiencing economic development opportunities

HALLANDALE BEACH - Economic uncertainty throughout the state, country and globe continues to be the “Hot Button” issue. As always, traditional press and media on those levels do not necessarily reflect what is transpiring within each municipality. When cities are on the front page it is typically due to the fact they are in financial turmoil. In reality, the majority of municipalities have seen some stability this past year. Some cities have continued to experience economic development opportunities. Hallandale Beach is one of those cities. Last Commission meeting our city approved three new business applications during our public hearings. One was for a brand-new banquet facility, “Hallandale Reception”, located at 772 E. Hallandale Beach Boulevard. This is the second location for Mr. Alvaro Lopez and family. They have been in business in the City of Doral for many years. The second was for a nightclub license for Martini Bar located in the Village of Gulfstream Park and the third was for a new gourmet store that plans to open up at the Hallandale Shopping Center. This entire shopping center is slated for redevelopment. The project will include a TD Bank, new building façade, new parking lot and landscaping. Tonight, Thursday, October 13, there will be the

first community meeting for a Planned Development in over a year and a half. This is the first meeting required by our city for the developer to publicly present the application prior to formal public hearings by the Planning and Zoning Board and the City Commission. For those readers who are not familiar with our public process this informal community meeting is not required by state statute. I suggested a policy that requires these types of developments to go to the public first for input before the hearings that are time regulated, and the City Commission adopted this. We also expanded the notification distance requirement from a quarter of a mile to a half mile; double the state requirement. This meeting is conducted by the developer. Commissioners and Staff do not participate. The City Manager is able to kick off the meeting and briefly explain the process. The community meet-

ing is scheduled tonight, Thursday, October 13, at The Hallandale Beach Cultural Center, 410 SE 3rd Street and will start at 6:30 PM. The developer is applying for a mixeduse development located at 2600 E. Hallandale Beach Boulevard; the former location of Maneroʼs Restaurant. They are seeking approval for Beachwalk, a mixed-use 31 story, 305 feet, mixeduse development with 84 residential units, 216 suites with 432 keys (two bedroom hotel /condo units where bedroom can be locked out), a 1225 foot square foot restaurant and associated parking garage. There is also a keen interest on West Hallandale Beach Boulevard and other areas of our community. Larry Bluestein has been doing an excellent job covering some of the happenings in this area. With two parimutuels in our community, West Hallandale Beach Boulevard is ripe for redevelopment. Our community and city need to continue to proactively move forward; utilizing every tool in the tool box to ensure that the City Vision in place through our community master, transportation and park plans comes to fruition. As an update to some of our transportation projects and planning, I am happy to report that the first construction logistics meetings have taken place with FDOT and the contractors are to begin

construction on the A1A median improvements. The lighting upgrades on Three Islands Boulevard are almost complete except for one median. This is one project that was moved to an outside contractor to be completed faster. Regretfully, the contractor went bankrupt before the job was finished and Staff will have to insure the last part is completed. Ironically, this shows one of the pitfalls when utilizing contracted services. One other project that was approved is the new West Hallandale Beach Boulevard and Dixie Highway intersection configuration heading east. This counterintuitive plan has proven to reduce traffic delays heading east and west. FDOT was ready to move but the city requested to delay construction as to not interfere with peak seasonal traffic flows. We continue to also work on transit improvement to reduce the amount of cars and trips on our roadways. Hallandale Beach and Sunny Isles have entered into an agreement to connect our city minibus Route 1 to their “Blue Line”. This interconnect will take place twice a day at A1A and HBB. It will provide a good to solution to offering both residents and business owners a seamless interconnect with a reasonably timed city route extension. Transportation planning is not simply about road-

ways and bus systems. Transportation has to be multimodal to be successful and is a key to quality livable communities. Plans should include sidewalks and bike lanes. In a built out community like Hallandale Beach it is often difficult to accommodate these amenities within the city right-ofways without impacting property owners. For years I have been a strong proponent of sidewalks. The city embarked on a block by block plan in our Western community to add sidewalks as part of the CRA. We also have included a requirement for sidewalks on new developments. On the eastern side of our city the city had received pushback from some residents when implementing sidewalks. Over the past couple years I have pushed Staff to look at alternatives to placing sidewalks in the middle of residentsʼ front yards when there is limited front yard setback and existing hard scape and landscape materials. During our budget workshops the City Commission pressed Staff to begin looking at alternatives. Along Diplomat Parkway and Layne Boulevard the city will finally be implementing two projects to complete sidewalks that were never finished. The model is to place the sidewalk directly adjacent to the roadway at grade. Along areas of Layne Boulevard, particularly in

front of Paradise by the Sea Condominiums, there are great examples of where this concept was implemented over 40 years ago. Along Layne Boulevard the City Commission also discussed reducing the roadway to one lane and implementing either a designated or undesignated bike lane where the right-of-way will allow. Layne Boulevard was originally designed as a two lane road to connect directly through to Aventura. Since the development of the area the road was closed off and the traffic level does not necessitate two lanes. The City Commission unanimously approved both these projects. We have also directed City Staff to conduct community meetings to inform residents about the plans and design. We also set a citywide goal to prioritize implementation areas for sidewalks. The city also unanimously approved set priorities for multimodal transportation. Wherever possible, road plans should focus on the utilization of right of way in this order; roadway, transit, sidewalks and then bike lanes.

gone on over the years to make sure that we didnʼt get our fair chance to compete for the entertainment dollar; now the bets, if you will, are off. No longer should far removed politicians have any say in what goes in an area they have interest in. It's time that when it comes to casino gaming, it should be a city by city decision. Not some completely misinformed and way out of the loop politician that believes that if he or she spends 5 months a year here, they know the area. They don't! We have to live here and work here every day, and anyone who stands in the way of busting out of this recession, should be pointed out to the unemployed in this state for standing in the way of opening the door for new jobs and a much needed revenue boost. I have said over and over again that I would make a terrible politician because I am far from diplomatic, and if you are doing wrong, I will let everyone know. There are too many lives at stake with crappy decisions being made daily. While we have so much at stake with Mardi Gras Casino, Gulfstream Racing & Casino and Dania Jai Alai in our own backyard, which certainly need to have the full casino opportunity, I will continue to champion the opportunity for residents and visitors alike to be treated like adults and not hold something from them like blackjack, roulette and other high stakes games that bring in money. Last week, a bill to allow gambling in MiamiDade County was being drafted in Tallahassee and may be filed this week – setting the stage for powerful gambling interests to vie over whether Florida will open its doors wider to gambling. With the Genting Group, which has invested more than $300 million on property near the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami, hiring a number of lobbyists, you can guarantee that many all over the state whether they live in Marianna or Miami, will understand what's at stake. What many of our facilities are lacking is a resort destination. Having a racing or jai alai venue with some slots and few card games is nice, but that total resort experience is what fills casinos and restaurants - in and around the physical property. It's really a matter of time before the state is forced, by its residents, to start making a decision that will help the economy. Those who refuse or protest will simply not be voted back in. No matter what status that politician has, money, especially in these tough times, will win over a few people who can see past agendas. If this wasn't something

that won't be a reality, major companies such as Wynn Resorts and Caesars Entertainment wouldn't call on so many high profile decision

makers to push this through. The Genting Group is promising to start gambling operations at the Omni International Mall

and employ 5,000 people by fall 2012 if the state gives the goahead. The company finalized its purchase of mort-

From Page 1A –––––––––––––––––––– If you call in the morning, you can usually get an appointment the same day, and if you just want to drop by while you are in the area, Ellen will do her best to get you right in. "What we are doing here," Bob said, "is offering the best hearing care anywhere, so you won't wait long to see me and you will be treated professionally and courteously." The hearing evaluation takes 15 to 20 minutes and there is no charge. "The first thing I do is to check the ears with our advanced equipment." A videootoscope is used, a non-invasive device that transmits images of the ear canal and eardrum onto a monitor's high definition plasma screen. "I look in there and make sure there is not a lot of wax in the ear. Wax can cause a mild hearing loss, and sometimes removing the wax eliminates the problem! If there is no excessive wax, we go to the test room and I do an audiometric evaluation to see if there are some tones the patient cannot hear well." The natural aging process and noise can cause a hearing loss, natural aging being the most common reason for hearing problems. Stereos, I-pods, boom boxes, traffic, and a noisy work environment all contribute to the cause. "It's the prolonged exposure to noise that does it," he said.

BENITEZ WAS STARKEY LAB'S FITTING SPECIALIST Before coming to the Aventura HEAR Center, Bob was, for 13 years, with Starkey Laboratories, the premier manufacturer of hearing technology in the United States. He is a Harvard graduate, a licensed Hearing Aid Specialist in the State of Florida, and nationally Board Certified in Hearing Instrument Sciences. At Starkey,

he was a fitting specialist. "I was the one to whom people like myself (a hearing professional) would send their patients when they couldn't figure out a way to make those patients happy with their hearing instruments." This experience made Bob an expert with hearing aid fittings. “The new digital instruments are complex and require expertise if they are to be properly tuned for a patientʼs individual needs,” Bob said. IT IS POSSIBLE YOU SUFFER SOME HEARING LOSS If the tests show conclusively that you suffer permanent hearing loss … Benitez said, " One out of three Americans over age 65 has a hearing problem and half of adults over 75 have one. Everyone over 65 years old should be getting their hearing checked regularly. Hearing problems, like having difficulty understanding what people say, can get worse if not treated. That is why itʼs important to get your hearing checked. Once you know you have a problem, you can take steps to deal with it. Just as your primary care physician does not routinely check your eyesight, she or he will not be checking your hearing. In both cases physicians normally assume you are seeing a specialist for care in these areas. The sad part is that while most seniors take good care of their eyes, very few actually have yearly hearing tests. There is no reason for it! You do not need a referral to have a hearing evaluation—just call the Aventura HEAR Center and ask for an appointment!” Improved hearing leads to an improved quality of life. Many people who have a hearing

loss become more and more isolated because they cannot enjoy conversations in social situations, but hearing help is now available that really works.

THE NEWEST TECHNOLOGY Hearing aids have become very sophisticated and there are many, many choices. How is a patient to decide which hearing aid to wear? “It starts with a hearing professional you can trust,” Benitez said. “It is a good thing to do research and find out what you can about hearing loss and how hearing aids can help, but when it comes to choosing a hearing aid, you need to follow the advice of a professional.” Many patients think because their friend or a family member did well with a particular hearing aid that they will also do well. “Thatʼs not always the case. Certain types of hearing instruments are designed for particular configurations of hearing loss, and your friend or relative may have a high frequency loss and do well with those aids, but you have a low frequency loss and the aid is completely inadequate for you. As a hearing professional, I am responsible for evaluating your loss and recommending the appropriate hearing aid for your loss, lifestyle, and budget.” “Lifestyle is important,” he adds, “because a person who is not active or who has a very limited social life due to health issues simply does

not need some of the advanced features available on the more sophisticated instruments.” Some hearing aids offer features designed specifically for very active social lives, and that is not what everyone needs. On the other hand, most patients would benefit from a hearing aid that does not whistle all the time, or an aid that makes noisy rooms more comfortable, or one that allows for telephone use without having to push a button. Benitez said, “many of the old problems that people had with hearing aids which prevented them from wearing them have been overcome by advances in technology, so even if you have tried hearing aids in the past and did not liked them, there are good reasons to take a second listen.” And what about all those different hearing aid companies, which one makes the best hearing aids? “They all do,” Benitez adds with a chuckle, “itʼs not the company, itʼs the professional fitting you that is crucial.” There are several big hearing aid companies worldwide, and they all make very good products, they are all priced very competitively, and the Aventura HEAR Center has relationships with

all of them. “It used to be one company was better at one type of aid and another at a different type. With the advent of digital aids, that has all changed. My experience working for the manufacturer gives me a certain edge—I have a level of training and programming expertise not available to most dispensers and thatʼs an important aspect of what I offer my patients. Even if you bought your aids elsewhere, there may be something I can do to help you hear better with them!”

for the patient who wants completely invisible hearing aids: the extended-wear devices that stay in the ears for two or three months and are then replaced with new ones, or the new SoundLense from Starkey that also disappear into the ear canal but use regular batteries and last several years before they need to be replaced. They have been very well received by the public and are the most cost-effective ʻinvisibleʼ solution.” Finally, what of the many people who have just a little bit of a hearing problem but want to hear better without spending a lot of money? “Well,” Benitez smiles, “weʼve got just the thing for them. Itʼs called the AMP and it is a personal amplifier that is small and discreet, appropriate for mild losses, and costs only $750 per side. It is the best way to begin to experience better hearing sooner rather than later when hearing aids may not help as much.” It sounds like there is a way to help anyone who wants to hear better. “Exactly, we have solutions for every type of loss and every budget!” So, what are you waiting for? An invitation?

Wi Series Wireless Hearing Aids.

WI SERIES WIRELESS HEARING AIDS MAKE TV VIEWING A PLEASURE “Many patients complain that they cannot hear TV well. They have to turn up the volume and their spouses (or neighbors) complain that it is too loud. New wireless technology allows effortless TV viewing by turning the hearing aids into personal headsets—itʼs like wearing earphones! The hearing aids are nearly invisible and very comfortable to wear.” What about people who want hearing aids that are more than “nearly” invisible? Benitez says, “We have two options

FREE Showerhead Exchange Program for the City of Hollywood

HOLLYWOOD - Installing water efficient showerheads is one of the easiest ways to save water and reduce your water and energy bills. According to the EPA, showers account for nearly 20% of total indoor water usage. The City of Hollywoodʼs showerhead exchange program allows its water customers to exchange their old (pre1994) showerheads for new low-flow showerheads absolutely FREE of charge! The old style showerheads manufactured before 1994 can use up to 5 gallons per minute (gpm) of water; or two buckets of water per minute. Showerheads manufactured after 1994 use 2.5 gpm or less. Letʼs do

the math: 2 buckets of water per minute x a10 minute shower = a lot of water wasting! “Using one of our new low-flow showerheads allows you to enjoy your shower, while saving water, not to mention the associated energy savings by using less hot water,” says Greg Turek, Interim Director of Public Services. Of all the water saving appliances, a low flow showerhead offers one of the fastest paybacks. A family of four can save approximately 20,000 gallons of water per year! The Showerhead Exchange Program is an ongoing, yearround conservation program. You may exchange your old showerhead at the Wastewater Treatment Plant on Taft

Street or the Water Billing Office at City Hall during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Bring in your old showerhead in order to receive a new one. Multi-family or commercial accounts, such as apartments or motels, that wish to exchange more than 12 showerheads should contact the Department of Public Services to confirm an adequate supply is available. For additional information about this or other water conservation programs offered by the City of Hollywood, please call 954.967.4455 or visit the City’s website at www.hollywoodfl.org/waterrebates

Mayor Bober’s Veterans Day Barbeque, Friday, Nov. 11

Levitt-Weinstein Memorial Chapels & Cemeteries along with Blasberg Rubin-Zilbert have been involved in the South Florida community for over half a century. What distinguishes Levitt-Weinstein & Blasberg Rubin-Zilbert is that these South Florida institutions are still operated by the third generation of the original founding families.

Beth David Memorial Gardens is growing to meet the needs of our community. Not only are they expanding their Private Family Estates, which allows the opportunity for the families to personalize and “build to suite “their individual desires. In addition, a new monument section is also being developed to assure those families who want a more Jewish traditional burial. Along with all this growth, Beth David has also begun construction on a new mausoleum building. “Our goal at Beth David is to grow and expand to meet the needs of the community and families that we serve. As long as the needs of our families continue, we will keep growing and developing.” Says Marc Rubin, Area Sales Director. Although our cemetaries are strictly for Jewish burials, our funeral homes are available to service all faiths. Marc Rubin, Area Sales Director, said, "Whether your loved one is staying locally or transferring out of state, the funeral home is here for the needs of all people that we serve. The advantage of being privately owned and managed is

that decisions can be made quickly." "People make choices in life and plan ahead for many things," Rubin says. "When a death occurs, why place the burden on your family to make those eternal decisions for you? What if unforeseen situations arise, wouldn't you feel better knowing you made your plans beforehand?" Shari Bradley, Marketing Director, said, "One of the benefits of dealing with us NOW is that you're planning in advance, saving money and relieving your family of stress by having to make the last minute decisions when youʼre not necessarily thinking rationally." "Approximately 90% of the families we service have been prearranged," Rubin said. When you think about it logically, it makes sense because it is just another part of Estate Planning, like your Will; and you can handle your funeral and cemetery wishes at the same time with us." Rubin goes on to

say,"What are you going to do when a death occurs? It's important that each person has a pre-arranged plan. A person can set up a financial plan paid out over a period of time with no interest charges. One day you will need it, so why wait for that day to suddenly come? Long-term planning locks in at today's price and protects against inflation." Blasberg states, "There are no two funeral plans the same. Increasingly, the Chapel handles special requests such as "Personalized Funerals" that celebrate the life of the person. In a matter of speaking, death is a fact of life and in those challenging moments you want a family there to comfort you, to love, grieve, and remember your spirit. "LET OUR FAMILY TREAT YOUR FAMILY LIKE OUR OWN." Levitt Weinstein, Blasberg Rubin-Zilbert Funeral Homes and Beth David Memorial Gardens and Chapels.

Itʼs time to step up your knowledge on this important

The basic dynamics of teen dating violence are fundamentally the same as domestic violence among adults. Just like domestic violence, dating violence is a systematic pattern of behaviors utilized by one partner (the batterer or abuser) to exert and maintain power and control over another person (the survivor or victim) where there exists an intimate relationship. As discussed elsewhere in this series of articles, abusers use

tactics that work. Among teens, common tactics that abusers use to gain and maintain power and control may include, but are not limited to: the abusive use of technology, isolation, emotional abuse, financial abuse, sexual abuse and physical abuse. A number of widely accepted social norms among youth may normalize jealousy and controlling behaviors, often equating them with love and concern. Additionally, most teens

have not had concrete discussions about healthy versus unhealthy relationships. Therefore, it is not uncommon for the warnings signs and indicators of dating violence to go unidentified. Many teen victims confuse jealousy with love or believe that “this is what relationships look like”. Often when a teen does know that their relationship is unhealthy or abusive, they donʼt tell their parents or friends. This may be

Best in residential & commercial air conditioning service

When Lindaʼs air conditioner quit working, it was 90 degrees outside and she was expecting house guests. “I was sure their visit would be miserable for them, as well as for my family,” she says. “I figured it would take several days to get it repaired.” But when Linda called Cool Air USA, the company sent a trained, certified technician out immediately. “The problem was fixed within hours,” she recalls. “The technician was friendly and courteous, and I could tell he was extremely knowledgeable. My guests kept cool during their visit, and we all were happy.” Gary was tired of his high summer electric bills. He also realized that his 15-year-old air conditioner wasnʼt cooling as well as it once did. So Gary called Cool Air USA and asked about installing a new, high efficiency unit. “The technician told me exactly what size unit that would be best for my home and informed me about different options,” he says. “After I decided to go ahead, they installed my new air conditioner quickly and professionally. They also cleaned up after themselves so well I couldnʼt even tell theyʼd been there. My new air conditioner does a great job of cooling, and because itʼs super efficient, my FPL bills have dropped significantly.” Linda and Gary are typical of Cool Air USA customers. The A+rated company based in Dania Beach can provide for all of your air conditioning needs quickly and efficiently. With more than 18 years in business, Cool Air USA prides itself on offering the latest, most technologically advanced equipment, as well as top quality customer service. Both installations of new units and repairs of existing ones are done by highly trained, certified technicians. PROFESSIONAL INSTALLATION New air conditioning units are far more efficient than older models. They save energy so a homeowner can feel good about making a positive impact on the environment, and they can also significantly lower a homeownerʼs electric bills. “Air conditioning accounts for a large portion of most homeownersʼ electric bills during the sum-

mer months,” says Edan Aviv, who operates Cool Air USA with partners Gil Nagar and Lior Poyastro. “A new, more efficient unit can also make a difference in comfort level because it cools more efficiently Rebates and tax incentives may even help defray the initial cost of the unit.”

WHAT’S LURKING IN THE DUCTS? Even an older air conditioner can be made more efficient and safe with regular maintenance. Cool Air USA technicians are experts at cleaning the ducts, a process that can greatly reduce indoor air pollution, as well as make the unit cool more efficiently. “Too many people neglect their air conditioners because the problems arenʼt visible,” Nagar says. “You may not notice that your unit isnʼt cooling as efficiently as it was before because the decline happens gradually. And you also may not be aware that dirty air conditioner ducts can actually harm the quality of the air in your home.” Ducts that are not cleaned regularly can harbor dust, dirt, pollen, moisture, bacteria, and other pollutants that may increase the risk of asthma and allergy attacks, bronchitis, and eye irritation. To take care of the problem, Cool Air USA carefully vacuums the ducts using a turbojet-powered machine that gets rid of any foreign substances lurking there. Then the supply vents are sealed to keep the ducts in pristine condition for as long as possible. “Once the duct system is professionally cleaned, it should stay that way for three to seven years,” Nagar says. DRYER VENT CLEANING Dryer vent cleaning is another service offered by Cool Air USA.

“Many homeowners donʼt realize that the vents in their clothes dryers can create fire risk,” Poyastro says. While the filter captures some of the lint that is created when you dry your clothes, it doesnʼt get all of it. “If the remaining lint builds up and comes into contact with the dryerʼs heating element, it can start to burn,” Povastro continues. “This is especially dangerous because

many people allow their dryers to operate while they are away from home.” A professional vent cleaning will solve the problem. “It is a hazard that people often donʼt think about,” Aviv says. “But it is easy to let us take care of things before there is a problem.” EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE Cool Air USA values

its customers and strives to provide them with the very best service. Technicians with North American Technician Excellence certification take meticulous care of your property and always clean up after themselves. “We know that service is what keeps people coming back to us,” Aviv says. “Much of our business comes from word-of-mouth, because satisfied customers recommend us to their friends. Weʼre proud of our reputation in the community, and we will always work hard to maintain it.”

It's something you should do year round!

(ARA) - October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and throughout the month people across the country will be supporting Susan G. Komen for the Cure(R), a global leader in the breast cancer movement, by participating in their local Komen 3Day for the Cure and Komen Race for the Cure. These events raise awareness and funding for breast cancer research and treatment, but supporting the cause shouldn't end on October 31. Individuals should think about taking action against breast cancer every day and with Pink Ribbon Banking from Bank of America that can become a reality. Bank of America has teamed up with Susan G. Komen to create Pink Ribbon Banking promo.bankofamerica.c om/komen. When you use your Pink Ribbon Visa(R) credit or debit card to make a qualifying purchase, you support the fight against breast cancer - at no additional expense to you. So when you are out shopping for goods,

buying groceries or paying a restaurant tab with your Pink Ribbon credit card or debit card, Bank of America contributes to Komen. This program enables customers to give back every day without having to dig deeper into their pockets. The money will help save lives, ensure quality-ofcare for all and invigorate scientists seeking a cure. "Since we formed the partnership in 2009, Bank of America has committed $2.4MM to Susan G. Komen for the Cure," said Andres De Armas, Affinity Card and Banking Executive. "Bank of America associates have volunteered more than 21,000 hours of their personal time and contributed nearly $750,000 (including our company match) in addition to the great benefits that kick in from our affinity card members when they're out spending

money. This program provides individuals a great way to assist those in need." PINK RIBBON BANKING HELPS YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE

How the right home updates help seniors age well at home

(ARA) - Whether you are a senior yourself, or have a loved one who is older, living independently in the home is a priority. With the right precautions and a few necessary safety modifications, many seniors can continue to thrive in their own homes. The room that poses the most danger to seniors is the bathroom. The potential for slips and falls is greater in this part of the home - 75 percent of fall injuries occur in the bathroom -- making it a good place to focus your renovation energy. Have you considered updating these parts of the bathroom? Flooring: Hard floors are a hazard because even a small amount of moisture can make them very slick. Many people choose to install carpet because it does not lift or move like rugs can, plus it is warmer ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– UPDATES, Page

Bank of America is a proud partner with Susan G. Komen for the Cure(R), the world's leading breast cancer organization in an effort to help Americans take action against breast cancer without having to overextend them-

selves financially. For each new Pink Ribbon credit card account, or checking account opened, Bank of America will make a contribution to Susan G. Komen. In addition, when the cardholder uses that credit or debit

card to make purchases, the bank will contribute a percentage to Komen. Breast cancer has affected most people's lives in some manner; the partnership between Bank of America and Komen creates the perfect way for individuals to give to a cause, without kicking in their own money. "Affinity cards" that make automatic contributions for you are a great way to keep your charitable efforts alive, especially in this challenging economic environment. The cards and checking accounts allow you to help fund a cause you strongly believe in with money that you are already spending. A variety of banks, including Bank of America, have a range of organizations your affinity card can make a contribution to by simply choosing a cause that is close to you. Transform Lipo Fat Into Future Health Insurance

(NewsUSA) - Nearly everything can be recycled and repurposed for later use -- even medical waste. Now, liposuction fat leftovers can be turned into adult stem cells, which can be stored as a tangible form of "bio-insurance" for the future. "The evidence strongly suggests that fat stem cells can stimulate the repair process after a heart attack," said American stem cell researcher Douglas Losordo, MD, of the regenerative medicine program at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. In addition to a heart attack, leftover lipo fat can offer a solution in the event of over 100 life-threatening diseases. For families with a history of diabetes, heart disease or neurological disorders, stem cells from fat may offer treatment options unavailable to others. Body fat is an abundant, renewable resource. Research shows that fat, or adipose tissue, is actually a better source of adult stem cells. It's concentration can be up to 1,000 times greater than what can be extracted from bone marrow, it's easily accessible and a less invasive procedure. Adipose tissue is currently discarded after liposuction when it could be put to better use. Storing today is essential because as you age, so do your stem cells, limiting their po-

tential for future use. Beneath this umbrella of medical potential, the first adipose adult stem cell bank, American CryoStem, is providing a service and facility to store adult stem cells for future health applications. With American CryoStem providers, a

viable fat sample can be extracted from a patient in a simple process taking less than 30 minutes. American CryoStem's clinical laboratory then isolates the stem cells from the body fat, and the sample is immediately tested for sterility and cell viability. After-

ward, the sample is prepared for long-term storage and secured at a FDA-compliant cryopreservation facility. Despite the startling possibilities of regenerative medicine, it's greatly under-utilized in the U.S. Currently, American CryoStem is the only bank focusing solely on the storage of adipose-derived adult stem cells.

FOLLOW THE AROMA By David Udoff Sun Times Aroma Market Catering is a full service Glatt kosher caterer providing exceptional and delicious menus since 2006. Servicing all of South Florida, their knowledgeable staff knows how to work together with their clients to create a perfect affair that your family and guests will never forget. FESTIVAL OF SUKKOT Now that it is Sukkot, there is no need to wander the desert in a caravan in search of a caterer who knows how to make your holidays run smoothly. Beginning the fifth day after Yom Kippur, this is quite an extreme transition, from one of the most solemn holidays on the calendar to one of the most festive! Sukkot is considered a celebration of the harvest with an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables. In reverence, synagogues and Jewish places of gatherings build temporary shelters “sukkah” to commemorate the fortyyear period during which the children of Israel were wandering in the desert while living in temporary shelters.

Catering - Big or Small - We Do It All!

As the weather cools off, you can still heat up!

GRILLED LEMON CHICKEN 1 C. kosher salt 2 whole chickens (about 3 1/2 lbs. each), each cut into 8 pieces, or 5 1/2 lbs. of chicken parts ground black pepper 1/4 C. olive oil 4 large cloves garlic, minced very fine 1 C. fresh lemon juice (from about 5 lemons) 1 1/2 t. dried thyme

Dissolve salt in 8 cups water in large glass or ceramic bowl or several gallon-size zipper-lock plastic bags. Add chicken parts (seal zipper-lock bag, if using) and refrigerate about 1 1/2 hours. Remove chicken from brine, rinse well, dry well with paper towels and sprinkle with pepper. Build a medium-hot fire. (If using charcoal, spread coals over only 2/3 of grill.) Heat olive oil and garlic in small saucepan over low heat, and when garlic just starts to sizzle, remove from heat. Mix with lemon juice and thyme in large, shallow non-reactive pan,

such as a 13 by 9 inch baking dish. Set aside. Place chicken, skin side down, on rack over hot coals. Grill, pulling chicken over to cool side of grill if flare-ups occur or if chicken starts darkening too quickly. Turn chicken and move it around to ensure even cooking, until chicken is a spotted dark golden brown; 15-17 minutes for legs, thighs and wings, 1820 minutes for breasts (expect slightly longer cooking times if gas grilling). As chicken parts are done, roll them in the pan of lemon sauce to coat completely. Return chicken parts to cool side of grill (or reduce heat to medium if cooking on gas); grill over low heat so lemon sauce flavors meat, about 5 minutes longer, turning each piece and brushing it with sauce once more. Return chicken to pan and roll in lemon sauce once again. Serve warm or at room temperature.

TENDERLOINS 2 T. olive oil 2 T. red-wine vinegar 1 T. Dijon mustard 1 large clove garlic, minced 1/4 C. fresh or 2 t. dried tarragon, crushed 1/2 t. salt 1/4 t. ground pepper 2 turkey tenderloins (3/4 lb. each)

Whisk all ingredients except turkey in small bowl for marinade. Pour marinade over turkey and store in refrigerator for several hours or overnight, turning occasionally. Prepare charcoal for grilling. Grill tenderloins, turning once, until turkey is no longer pink in the center and juices run clear, about 20 minutes. Let cool slightly and cut into 1/2-inch medallions. Serve immediately. GRILLED GARLIC CHICKEN WINGS 2 lbs. chicken wings, each cut in half 6 to 8 garlic cloves, finely chopped juice of 1 lemon salt and pepper, to taste 1 to 2 T. anise-fla-

vored liqueur, such as Pernod (optional) 1/4 to 1/2 t. cumin large pinch of ground cinnamon 3 to 4 T. extra virgin olive oil shredded lettuce or other greens, for garnish lemon wedges, for garnish

Combine the wings with the garlic, lemon juice, salt and pepper, optional liqueur, the cumin, cinnamon and olive oil. Mix well, until the chicken wings are coated with the marinade. Let marinate at room temperature for about 1 hour. Better still, tightly cover the container and refrigerate for up to 2 days. Prepare a fire in a barbecue grill. Grill the chicken wings over medium heat for 15 to 20 minutes, turning them from time to time, until they are cooked through, crisp and lightly browned/charred in spots. Serve hot, on a little bed of shredded lettuce, or tender watercress, or any little green.

Serve with lemon wedges alongside.

Serves 4.

HONEY GARLIC GRILLED PORK 3/4 lb. pork tenderloin salt and freshly ground black pepper 4 medium garlic cloves, crushed 3 T. honey 2 T. low-salt soy sauce 2 T. Dijon mustard

Preheat grill or broiler. Remove fat from pork and cut the pork nearly in half lengthwise and open like a book. The pork should not be cut all the way through. Salt and pepper the pork and press the crushed garlic onto the meat on both sides. Combine the honey, soy sauce and mustard. If using the broiler, place vegetables on a large foillined tray and broil for 8 to 10 minutes. Turn vegetables over, place pork on tray and spoon half the honeymustard sauce over it. Broil 7 minutes with the vegetables. If using a grill, place

vegetables on grill grate and cook about 8 to 10 minutes. Turn vegetables over, place pork on grill and spoon half the honeymustard sauce over it. Grill pork 7 minutes with the vegetables. Remove both from grill or broiler; slice pork on an angle. Serve pork with the remaining sauce spooned over the sliced pieces.

GRILLED SIRLOIN 1/2 cup A 1 Sweet and Tangy Steak Sauce 1/4 cup minced onion 1 clove garlic, minced 3/4 teaspoon Tabasco Pepper Sauce 1 1 1/2 pound boneless beef top sirloin steak, 3/4 inch thick

Mix steak sauce, onion, garlic and pepper sauce; set aside. Grill or broil steak for 5 to 7 minutes on each side or until desired doneness, brushing with sauce mixture occasionally.

Serves 4 to 6.
