A Paige From My Notebook...

Letter from the President – Paige Zutavern

October has always been one of my favorite months of the year. There’s a crispness in the air, harvest is underway, and communities across Nebraska seem to come alive with gatherings, celebrations, and events. This fall, more than ever, I sense a renewed hunger for something that the digital world can’t replicate—real, in-person connection. People want to meet in the third dimension again. They want to shake hands, laugh together, and look each other in the eye.

Over the past decade, technology has reshaped the way we interact. At first, it was exhilarating—emails, social media, and video calls gave us the ability to connect across distances at the click of a button. But lately, I hear more and more voices questioning whether the internet is losing its magic. Between fake accounts, bots, algorithms, and now the rise of AI, the online world often feels less authentic. The question many business owners quietly ask is: is the internet dead for meaningful connections?

online, and the undeniable impact of in-person networking. When I attend ribbon cuttings, chamber events, or nonprofit fundraisers, I’m reminded that the energy in the room simply can’t be duplicated by a screen. There’s a pulse to it. You hear the applause, you feel the buzz, you exchange knowing glances that say “we’re in this together.” That third dimension—where human beings truly meet—matters more today than it ever has.

"The question many business owners quietly ask is: is the internet dead for meaningful connections?"

This issue of Strictly Business is filled with examples of leaders who are leaning into that truth. They are hosting events, creating spaces for people to gather, and building companies that understand the value of personal connection. It’s inspiring to watch, and it’s proof that no matter how far technology advances, human beings will always crave community.

I don’t believe it’s dead—but it is changing. Digital tools will continue to be part of how we market, network, and share ideas. But what makes the difference—the spark that builds trust and creates long-term relationships—still happens face-to-face. That’s why Strictly Business remains committed to being a platform that combines the best of both worlds: the depth and credibility of print, the reach and convenience of

So, as you flip through these pages, I encourage you to think about the ways your business can bring people together this fall. Maybe it’s hosting a customer appreciation event, sponsoring a nonprofit banquet, or simply inviting a client to coffee instead of sending another email. Those moments add up, and they create the kind of relationships that no algorithm can manufacture.

The internet may be crowded with noise, but here in Lincoln and Omaha, we know how to cut through it—with authenticity, kindness, and a handshake in the third dimension.

Here’s to a season of real connections and lasting impact.

Greater Omaha Chamber Launches Midtown Small Business Resiliency Fund

The Greater Omaha Chamber has launched a business resiliency fund to support target small businesses during streetcar construction.

The Midtown Small Business Resiliency Fund will distribute about $1 million, to qualifying businesses that have been most significantly impacted by utilities work to date and will be affected once rail construction begins. Funds for distribution were given to the Chamber by a donor for the Chamber to distribute. The first distributions started in mid-August and are targeted to businesses most severely impacted in the corridor west of Turner Boulevard on Farnam Street.

“The Greater Omaha Chamber is proud to launch the Midtown Small Business Resiliency Fund,” said Heath Mello, President & CEO of the Greater Omaha Chamber. “At the donor’s request, the Chamber will serve as administrator of this fund, which will provide critical support to businesses west of Turner Boulevard along Farnam Street. This fund was created after listening closely to small businesses that are experiencing the greatest and longest disruptions from streetcar construction.”

“While we are already seeing the economic development the streetcar is bringing, we also acknowledge and stand ready to help the businesses that are most affected from this period of disruption,” said Mello. “The streetcar will be a boon for Omaha’s economy and vibrancy, and the resiliency fund reflects our commitment to easing the temporary hardships that come with this progress.” For more information on the fund, visit omahachamber.org/greater-omaha-chamber-launches-midtown-smallbusiness-resiliency-fund/.

The 2025 Coolest Thing Made in Nebraska will be announced October 6 at the NE Chamber’s Manufacturing Summit in La Vista, where finalists will also be invited to display their products. ERIC

Eric Argo is the Vice President for Omaha Private Banking, Union Bank & Trust

Tell us a little about your business in your own words. - I describe Private Banking as “banking the way it used to be.” I enjoy building genuine relationships with clients—many know as much about me and my family as I do about theirs. Trust and comfort are key, so I take time to understand their goals while ensuring they know who they’re working with. We serve high-net-worth individuals by looking holistically at their finances and providing tailored solutions. Whether it’s creating a detailed financial plan, financing a new home or business, or simply assisting with an account, we’re here to help.

How did you get started in the business? - I grew up in a small town in Southeastern Iowa with dreams of becoming the next Tom Brokaw. After an internship at an NBC station, I realized national TV wasn’t the right fit and switched my focus to Finance and Business Management, with a minor in Communications. Banking wasn’t on my radar then, but it’s proven to be the perfect career path—and an incredible journey.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally?Preparing for Y2K, The Great Recession, and COVID are the three big ones that immediately come to mind. All were challenging in their own way, with lots of lessons learned from each.

What has been your most important achievement professionally?

- I take pride in knowing that I’ve developed great friendships with clients and colleagues and have been lucky enough to help hundreds of individuals and their families achieve their goals, spanning generations.

Tell us a little about your family. - I became a first-time grandpa in May, welcoming Hudson. My wife, Kim, and I will celebrate 30 years of marriage next June, and we’re proud parents of three, two daughters in the medical field and a son finishing his Computer Science degree at UNL. We feel lucky to have everyone close by in Omaha and Lincoln.

What are your favorite things to do on a day off? - Spending time with family, being outdoors, watching any (and all) athletic events, and of course getting things checked off my personal to-do list.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - Both of my parents grew up on farms. They wanted to ensure I understood what hard work was, so I was spent a fair amount of time getting my hands dirty in the fields. For a few years, this future banker was a proud member of 4-H (Saddle Club). Then I learned guitar and joined a band.

Who inspires you? - Family. My grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, sister, in-laws, wife, and children. They all inspire me in different ways. What are your favorite quote(s) or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” “Success is 90% hard work and 10% luck, but don’t underestimate that 10%.” And, “The only thing that overcomes hard luck is hard work.”

What is your favorite movie? - Top three in no particular order: Fiddler on the Roof, Princess Bride, and On Golden Pond. Great actors and storylines.

If our readers would like to contact you, how should they do so? - I can be reached at eric.argo@ubt.com or (402) 827-6958. You can also learn more about UBT and our services at ubt.com.

GABE

Gabe Munoz is a Physical Therapist Assistant at Brookstone Meadows.

Tell us a little about your position at Meadows in your own words.I am a Physical Therapist Assistant that provides rehabilitation services consisting of strengthening, stretching, balance, neuromuscular, and manual exercises/activities that are tailored to each resident that comes in the facility to progress to home.

How did you get started in physical therapy? - I became interested in physical therapy after job shadowing physical therapists in high school. I was drawn to how physical therapy helps regain independence and improve their quality of life. In school, I enjoyed learning about anatomy and movement, which solidified my interest. I eventually pursued my degree in physical therapy at Clarkson College.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - One of the biggest challenges as a PTA has been dealing with imposter syndrome, especially early in my career. When I first started practicing, I sometimes questioned whether I had enough knowledge or experience to truly make a difference for my patients/residents. Overtime, I learned to see imposter syndrome as a signal that I cared deeply about doing the best for my patients/residents.

What has been your most important achievement professionally? - My most important achievement has been seeing patients/residents progress to the point where they regain their independence. One patient I worked with had significant mobility limitations after a cerebral infarction, requiring assistance with all activities of daily living. Over time, this patient was able to transfer independently and was able to get home with their significant other.

Tell us a little about you personally. - I am originally from Tucson, Arizona (still do not tolerate the Nebraska winters). I live with my beautiful girlfriend of 4 years and have a 5 month old Labradorretriever dog at home.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - The biggest turning point in my life was finding my purpose of helping others. I realize that my role as a PTA is not just about treating physical impairments but about empowering patients/residents to believe in their own ability to recover.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - My favorite thing to do now on my day off is teaching my puppy to potty outside!

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - An interesting thing about me is that I can juggle and own over 30 pairs of shoes.

What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - My favorite piece of advice that I have received that sticks with me daily is applying these four words in a row: listen, acknowledge, validate, and empathize.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? - If I could have a superpower it would definitely be the ability to instantly heal soreness after exercises. This way, patients/residents would not give me the side eye the next day when they are feeling muscles they didn’t know existed.

If our readers would like to contact you, how should they do so?

- Give Brookestone Meadows a call at (402) 289-2696.

How did you get started in the business? - My first job out of college was as a credit analyst at a large publicly traded bank. From there, I have had almost every job you can have in the commercial banking world. What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life?

- Two big turning points stand out: meeting my wife while at Xavier University in Cincinnati, and taking a chance on joining a small loan production office with Bankers Trust as it entered the Omaha market. That decision opened the door to tremendous growth, and I’m now excited to be leading our team here.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - My favorite thing to do is watch my kids play sports. When I am not on the sidelines, I enjoy playing golf and skiing.

Who inspires you? - My parents taught me, by example, what it takes to build a family—lessons I only fully understood once I became a parent myself. I’m also inspired daily by my colleagues at Bankers Trust, an amazing team that works hard, does the right thing, and has fun along the way.

Home for the Holidays: How Carole’s House of Hope Creates Family Traditions That Last a Lifetime

For many families, the holiday season is filled with the comfort of traditions—gathering around the table, unwrapping presents beneath twinkling lights, or bundling up for a chilly evening of cocoa and Christmas lights. But for the young mothers and children who call Carole’s House of Hope (CHH) home, these moments are more than festive fun. They are an opportunity to experience something many of them have never truly known: the warmth of family.

At CHH, the holidays are about creating stability, belonging, and memories that will last long after the season ends. Each tradition is carefully designed not only to celebrate but to teach—showing the young women in the program what it means to build a home filled with love, consistency, and joy.

The season begins with the first signs of fall. Thanks to longtime volunteer Elizabeth Koterba, CHH’s front entrance comes alive with seasonal arrangements that welcome residents and visitors alike. Soon after, families pile into vans for a day at Vala’s Pumpkin Patch or another fall favorite. CHH covers admission and even snack bags, allowing the mothers to focus less on cost and more on creating memories with their children. For many, it’s the first time they’ve enjoyed an outing like this together.

When Thanksgiving arrives, the house truly comes alive. Classes are suspended, curfews extended, and families are encouraged to relax and share meals around the table. Staff and volunteers decorate, prepare, and serve dinner, ensuring every mother and child feels cared for and celebrated. For residents who may not have another place to go, this holiday gathering becomes their family table.

As December rolls in, the house transforms into a winter wonderland. Lights and decorations sparkle in every corner, reminding participants that they are part of something bigger than themselves. CHH provides a Christmas dinner complete with a visit from Santa, who personally delivers gifts chosen with each family in mind. Every participant and child is asked to make a short wish list, ensuring they not only receive what they need but also something they truly want. For many, it’s the first time their holiday has included thoughtful, personalized gifts.

The celebrations don’t stop there. In recent years, CHH has treated families to a holiday outing—most memorably, a Christmas Lights Tour on Ollie the Trolley. Bundled in coats, sipping hot cocoa, and sharing snacks, the families laugh, sing, and marvel at the lights. For one night, the outside world fades away, and the women and children can simply enjoy the magic of the season.

What makes these traditions so powerful is not just the joy they bring in the moment, but the foundation they create for the future. By modeling family-centered traditions, CHH helps young mothers envision what they want for their own households one day. These are the memories that will inspire them to cook a holiday meal for their children, to carve pumpkins as a family, or to gather together year after year around a Christmas tree.

At Carole’s House of Hope, the holidays aren’t just celebrated — they are lived. They are proof that stability and love can be built, that family can be found, and that hope can shine brightly, even in the coldest months of the year.

ProjectHarmonyGivesSafetyTipsforHalloween

Halloween is a night of excitement but also of increased risk. To help ensure the holiday remains a fun and safe experience for families, Project Harmony offers practical safety tips for parents, homeowners and motorists.

For parents and guardians: Ensure costumes are safe and easy to move in, and use face paint instead of masks that can obstruct vision.

Children should trick-or-treat in groups with a planned route, stick to familiar, well-lit homes, avoid entering strangers’ homes or cars and carry a phone. Set a clear return time.

For homeowners: Illuminate walkways, steps and porches. Keep extension cords clear of paths. Park vehicles off the street and secure pets indoors.

For motorists: Drive slowly and stay alert for children. Avoid passing stopped vehicles (they may be dropping off trick-or-treaters), use turn signals and employ hazard lights when needed.

ProjectIntentionalandMaxI.WalkerPartner to Keep Omaha Kids Warm This Winter

Project Intentional, Inc., an Omahabased nonprofit dedicated to serving single caregivers and families, is joining forces with Max I. Walker this fall to ensure children across the metro area stay warm during the winter season.

Through the Max’s Coats for Kids drive, every Max I. Walker location is now accepting donations of new or gently used children’s coats through October 31. Each donated coat will be professionally cleaned at no cost before being distributed directly to families served by Project Intentional.

For Project Intentional, this effort reflects its mission of meeting families’ most practical needs in compassionate and dignified ways. By providing warm coats, the organization helps remove barriers for caregivers and creates a tangible impact for children who may otherwise go without.

“This partnership highlights what’s possible when businesses and nonprofits come together for the greater good,” said Sasha Berscheid, founder of Project Intentional. “A simple act of giving a coat translates into warmth, security and love for a child in our community.”

Donations can be made at any Max I. Walker location throughout Omaha. Each coat collected and cleaned represents more than clothing—it represents hope, comfort and care for local families.

Vision Maker Media Educates

Vision Maker Media’s (VMM) mission is empowering and engaging Native people to share stories. The organization envisions a world changed and healed by understanding Native stories and the public conversations they generate. VMM’s educational programs help achieve this goal by sparking dialogue and deepening awareness of Native life and culture through the Native American Film Series and iNative Shorts for Kids.

A Historic Merger: Child Saving Institute and Children’sSquareUnitetoExpandLegacyof Care

On October 13, the Native American Film Series at The Ross Theater will feature “Words from a Bear.” The film examines the life and mind of Kiowa writer and National Medal of Arts recipient Navarro Scott Momaday, and takes viewers through the expansive landscapes of the West where his Kiowa ancestors once lived. Momaday, one of North America’s most celebrated authors of poetry and prose, wrote “House Made of Dawn,” which won a Pulitzer Prize and helped set the stage for Native American literature to become accepted into the mainstream.

For free tickets, visit theross.org.

VMM’s iNative Shorts for Kids is a series on its YouTube channel, featuring short, curated videos from VMM’s extensive film archive. October’s episodes focus on the theme “Identity Matters.” Excerpts from “What was Ours” show tribal members reclaiming sacred artifacts, while scenes from “Return” document Native women revitalizing traditional foodways. Both films demonstrate how reconnecting with tangible cultural heritage is a powerful act of defining and strengthening the modern Native identity.

Transformation 2025 to Transformation 2030:BuildingaCityWhereWeCanAllThrive

Launched in 2014 by the Empowerment Network with more than 200 partners, Transformation 2025 helped generate over $1 billion in public-private investments in North and South Omaha. The initiative also facilitated job growth and revitalization efforts, connecting more than 9,000 youth to employment through Step-Up Omaha.

Now rebranded as Transformation 2030, the initiative aims to build on that momentum, guided by input from more than 500 leaders and residents. The new $1.4 billion plan focuses on jobs, entrepreneurship, education, housing, cultural tourism and health. Research by PPRP Innovations credits the original plan with creating more than 14,000 jobs, a figure expected to rise with continued investments.

Step-Up Omaha remains a cornerstone, equipping youth with career skills and opportunities, with support from the City of Omaha, United Way, the Lakin Foundation and the Obama Foundation’s My Brother’s Keeper Alliance, which implements evidence-based practices addressing six MBK milestones, cradle-to-career, to improve outcomes for boys and young men of color.

Transformation 2030 is also expanding leadership pipelines. The annual African American Leadership Conference empowers rising leaders through workshops on wealth building, career advancement and civic engagement. This year’s conference is set for October 24 at the Hilton Omaha Downtown, featuring keynote speakers Mayor John Ewing, Jr. and Jay Bailey, CEO, Russell Innovation Center for Entrepreneurs.

Through strategic partnerships and sustained community engagement, Empowerment Network continues to position North Omaha for inclusive, long-term prosperity.

Keep Nebraska Beautiful Shares School Chemical Safety Success with Nation

Pete Stadig, Program Director of Keep Nebraska Beautiful (KNB), represented the state on a national stage at the 2025 ASTSWMO Joint Hazardous Waste and Materials Management Training in Kansas City, MO. Stadig was invited to present the success story of Nebraska’s School Chemical Cleanout Campaign (SC3), an initiative that has proactively removed hazardous materials from educational institutes statewide, safeguarding students and staff.

KNB was a featured speaker in a session aptly titled “RCRA Weird and Wacky,” which focused on unique and emerging issues under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). What might seem ‘wacky’ is often a serious safety challenge for schools. Presenting in this forum highlighted that Nebraska is a leader in tackling complex environmental issues head-on.

KNB provides the expertise to plan a cleanout and covers up to 90% of the cost to safely remove and dispose of old, unwanted, toxic, or dangerous chemicals. This proactive approach eliminates a significant liability for schools and, most importantly, creates a safer environment for students and teachers.

Nebraska vs. Minnesota: The Broken Chair Trophy Game Returns With Team Jack Foundation

The $5 Bits of Broken Chair Trophy is back for its ninth year of fundraising as Nebraska heads to Minnesota on October 17 to face the Golden Gophers.

What started as a lighthearted rivalry between fan bases has grown into a powerful tradition – raising nearly $175,000 since 2017 for two incredible causes.

• Team Jack Foundation – funding pediatric brain cancer research

• University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital –supporting the Casey O’Brien Team One Four Infusion Center Transformation Fund

This fan-led effort brings Husker and Gopher supporters together off the field to make a real difference. Every donation, big or small, helps carry forward the missions of Team Jack and Team One Four.

“The Broken Chair Trophy game is an important piece of our annual fundraising, and one of our favorites. Pediatric brain cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in children and research is severely underfunded. With recent federal funding cuts, the role of non-profits like Team Jack is more critical than ever. Husker Nation’s dedication, shown through the Broken Chair fundraiser and so much more, empowers us to keep advancing research and hope for kids battling brain cancer.” - Kylie Dockter, Executive Director of the Team Jack Foundation

Riding

for YOUR American Hero: Heroes Honor Ride Honors Gold Star Families in Powerful Tribute

The inaugural Heroes Honor Ride (HHR) roared through South Dakota delivering a stirring tribute to courage, sacrifice, and community service. Over 150 riders joined the 40-mile procession from Belle Fourche to the legendary Buffalo Chip in Sturgis, honoring our nation’s heroes.

This year’s honored hero, Gold Star family member Preston Yeager, was presented with a custom-built motorcycle by Xotic Customs (Lincoln, NE) before leading the commemorative ride alongside fellow participants and special guests.

The event drew notable figures including Chris Kael of Five Finger Death Punch, Purple Heart veteran and country artist Scotty Hasting, two-time UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia, and actor Frankie Loyal from Mayans M.C., all lending their voices and presence to amplify the cause.

Founded by a group of motorcycle enthusiasts and longtime community advocates, Heroes Honor Ride is a registered 501(c) (3) nonprofit that channels its passion for motorcycles into a mission of gratitude. For over 15 years, the individuals behind HHR have supported veterans and first responders.

HHR proudly allocated 100% of registration donations toward honoring this year’s hero with the custom bike build, while merchandise sales and one-time contributions helped support their cause.

As HHR looks ahead to next year’s ride, the organization is calling on supporters nationwide to help continue its mission and recognize a new hero whose story deserves to be told.

OPOAF Continues to Strengthen Community Ties With Shop with a Cop Events

The Omaha Police Officers Association Foundation (OPOAF), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, continues its mission to build positive relationships between the Omaha Police Department and the community through its recurring Shop with a Cop (SWAC) events. These events offer local youth meaningful one-on-one interactions with police officers through fun, supportive experiences.

On August 11, OPOAF hosted its annual Back to School SWAC event, this year supporting students from Benson West Elementary. Over 30 children were paired with officers to shop at Target, each receiving $200 to spend on clothing, shoes, school supplies and other essentials to prepare for the school year. Families and officers later gathered at the school for an afternoon of pizza, snow cones, and music, with a DJ helping create a festive atmosphere.

All SWAC events are free for participating children and their families, made possible entirely through community donations. OPOAF will host its next SWAC event in December, focused on bringing holiday cheer to Omaha families.

To support future events or learn more about OPOAF’s work, visit OPOAF.org. Donations can be made directly through the website.

Collective for Hope Unveils New Logo, Branding, Bilingual Website

Collective for Hope, an Omaha-based nonprofit providing free and inclusive grief support for people of all ages, is introducing a new logo and other rebranding elements, as well as a new English-Spanish bilingual website to reach more communities.

“The new logo — suggesting a luminary representing light, compassion and hope — is a reflection of our mission to cultivate a grief-affirming community through companionship and understanding so every person feels valued and embraced as they navigate loss,” Executive Director Cliff McEvoy said. “The website and our new branding also support our vision: ‘A world where grief is normalized through empathy, love and hope.’ We are thankful to everyone who provided input and are excited that this new brand resonates with our community and the work we do.”

The organization broke ground on a new facility at 8000 Chicago Street on June 17. Collective for Hope has been operating out of two locations. In 2019, 1.5 acres of land was purchased and a capital campaign project commenced to establish a collaborative campus that would host the program brands of Collective for Hope along with other complementary services and organizations.

“This new facility will enable our organization to provide grief support programs, community events and education and training to reach even more individuals and families who are navigating the challenges of loss,” McEvoy said.

Where Compassion Meets Clothing: 19 Years of Foster Care Closet Impact

The Foster Care Closet is focused on meeting the basic needs of youth in foster care. We headquarter out of Lincoln but serve the state of Nebraska. Our innovative approach in using our mobile closet to travel across the state stretching from Scottsblu to Lincoln, Grand Island, Kearney and North Platte to Norfolk allows us to go to where the children are living and serve right in their own community. When a youth shops with us they get a full wardrobe of clothing. We’re setting them up for success right from the start. However, we don’t stop there, we continue to support our youth in care for the duration of their foster care journey. We are in the communities serving twice a year with seasonal clothing.

Foster Care Closet was founded by a former foster child. Experience is the best teacher. Understanding how a child emotionally feels during their foster care journey is something Leigh gets because she’s lived it. Being able to see how a foster youth’s basic needs are o en one of the last things checked o the list and comprehending how vulnerable that child is drives the work of the Foster Care Closet. To have the honor of standing in the gap between the unknown and setting a child up for success is not one taken lightly. Believing that the child should have their voice heard in the process is another example of how the Foster Care Closet focuses on meeting the needs of the children. To give them the opportunity to pick out their own clothing, o ering many di erent brands and styles and restoring dignity through quality fashion-forward options helps youth feel in control of their next steps as well as reassures them they will show up fitting in with their peers.

We are passionate about restoring dignity to youth in crisis. We focus on providing an environment that is organized, clean and spacious for our families to feel welcomed and comfortable shopping in. We serve only youth in care and we do so through private shopping events. We pull together as a team, each valuing the many gi s and talents of others. We take responsibility in the quality of our service from interacting with our youth and families as well as making sure we have fashion-forward clothing with several options available to choose from. We believe that dignity is a core value that everyone should be treated with and reminded they have.

The Foster Care Closet is in year 19 of serving Nebraska’s foster youth. Each year we have spent time learning from past mistakes and honing in on what we are best at: Understanding the foster care community and how best to serve them with excellence. Like any business, there have been growth periods and opportunities to take a breath instead of a leap. I also believe that when you surround yourself with like-minded people who get to see you at your worst they cheer you on and push you to become your best. So in the end, growing a business is about so much more than numbers, it is about the immeasurable.

BUILDING OMAHA

A city’s growth is most impactful when its economic development is directly tied to the well-being of its residents. As urban areas expand, investing in local businesses, job creation, workforce training and equitable access to economic opportunities ensures that residents benefit from the city’s progress. When development focuses solely on infrastructure or attracting outside investment without uplifting the existing community, it often leads to displacement and widening income gaps. However, a city that grows with its people—by supporting entrepreneurship, creating inclusive economic policies and prioritizing affordable living—builds a stronger, more stable economy rooted in shared success.

As the 1990s began, Omaha was a city that had grown for decades in one direction: out. Between 1950 and 1990, Omaha’s city limits expanded by 154% while its population grew by only 33%. To balance this trend, the city’s Master Plan emphasized reinvestment in core neighborhoods alongside well-planned development on the edges. In recent years, the results of long-term planning are evident. The Omaha-Council Bluffs metropolitan area surpassed the 1 million population milestone in 2024, reaching 1,001,010 residents, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. That growth represents an increase of more than 12,000 people in just one year and a 3.45% rise since the 2020 census. The metro spans five counties in Nebraska and three in Iowa, making it one of the Midwest’s fastest-growing regions.

Construction continues to play a central role in Omaha’s expansion. Nebraska has 47,446 workers in construction and extraction roles, and about 50% of them are based in the Omaha-Council Bluffs metro area. In 2024 alone, the city issued nearly 1,700 building permits in City Council District 2, with a valuation of $664 million, underscoring the pace of growth and reinvestment across the community.

You can thank the amazing construction teams for their involvement for Omaha’s growing city limits and incredible infrastructure. There are so many current projects happening in Omaha to make it a better city and a better place to live for every resident here.

Engineered Controls provides smart and affordable systems that help make buildings in Omaha, and beyond, run more efficiently. These systems act like a building’s “nervous system,” connecting things like heating and cooling (HVAC), lighting, security and gas detection monitoring so they can all work together smoothly. By automating these systems, building owners can save energy, cut down on utility bills and create safer, more comfortable spaces. This also makes owning buildings more sustainable as over time, the savings will pile up.

As construction continues to grow in Omaha, with thousands of building permits issued in the past year, contractors and developers are looking for smarter ways to manage new and existing buildings. That’s where Engineered Controls’ technology comes in. Their WEBs platform is internet-based, which means it can be accessed from any device with a web browser. It allows building owners to monitor and control everything in one place, whether it’s temperature settings, lights or security systems.

Because the system is flexible and open, builders can choose the best equipment for each job while still keeping everything connected under one easy-to-use platform. For Omaha’s fastgrowing commercial and residential developments, this kind of smart building technology can be a big step toward reducing long-term costs and boosting property value.

Founded in 1967, Farris Engineering has completed thousands of jobs across multiple states and jurisdictions. Being 100% employee-owned, they are a tight-knit and highly productive engineering company. Over the years of operation, they have seen technology and procedures change and evolve. Their best practices and methods have evolved with these advancements. With all the development in the industry and in the community of Omaha, Farris Engineering’s core values have remained the same, and

PEOPLE THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Our collaborative team provides innovative, project-specific solutions to any challenge they face. Let us help bring your buildings to life.

Farris brings these values into every project they build, leaving an imprint and legacy of commitment, trust and honesty on the city of Omaha.

Farris Engineering has played a critical role in shaping the city’s buildings. Known for its expertise in mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection engineering, Farris Engineering is helping lead the charge in designing systems that enhance functionality, sustainability and user experience across a wide range of facilities.

One notable project is Mammel Hall at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, a $27.6 million, 121,000-squarefoot facility. Farris Engineering designed a state-of-the-art cooling system that reduces energy use and a top-tier power distribution system to support sensitive electronic equipment. Mammel Hall was UNO’s first LEED Gold-certified building and has earned multiple awards, including the 2011 ACEC Nebraska Grand Award and the 2012 IES Illumination Award of Merit.

Farris also worked on the $13 million renovation of Roskens Hall, an 83,770-square-foot facility at UNO. The project achieved LEED Silver certification and a 20% energy savings compared to standard design benchmarks. Key features include a highly efficient airflow system, modern heating and cooling controls, backup power for critical systems, and water-saving fixtures. The building also incorporates advanced audiovisual systems, energy-efficient lighting, and real-time energy monitoring. Roskens Hall’s innovative design earned the ACEC Nebraska Honor Award and an IES Illumination Merit Award.

For more than 38 years, Huffman Engineering, Inc. has been systematically shaping the Midwest, helping communities grow through automation and control systems engineering solutions. With offices in Omaha, Lincoln, Kearney and Denver and more than 30 degreed engineers on staff, the firm has completed over 2,000 projects for more than 520 clients, bringing expertise in automation, control systems, process optimization and infrastructure to industries from pharmaceuticals and food production to water, wastewater, utilities and manufacturing.

In Omaha, Huffman Engineering has played a critical role in keeping the city’s infrastructure resilient and its systems running smoothly. After the historic flooding at the Papillion Creek Water Resource Recovery Facility, the plant faced catastrophic damage, leaving 65 million gallons of untreated sewage spilling into the Missouri River each day. Huffman engineers were part of the team that assessed the damage and restored the facility, ensuring the community could count on clean water

“At the end of the day, we care about people, about our ecosystem and about the future of this area,” said Howard Huffman.

But building a stronger Omaha isn’t just about infrastructure. Huffman also invests in the community through initiatives like their annual SOUPer Bowl food drive. In 2025, the firm collected more than 1,650 pounds of food across its three offices, donating Nebraska’s share to the Food Bank of the Heartland. In Omaha, employees built an 8-foot-3-inch tower of cans in a friendly engineering challenge, proving that problem-solving and community service go hand in hand.

From major global pharmaceutical production projects and water and wastewater community protection projects to dayto-day system optimization, Huffman Engineering continues to expand its footprint, combining technical expertise with a commitment to the people and communities of Omaha and beyond. Each project, whether big or small, leaves a lasting mark and helps the city grow smarter, stronger and more resilient.

Omaha is in the midst of one of its most dynamic construction periods in recent memory. From modernizing infrastructure and upgrading public spaces to expanding educational facilities and strengthening commercial hubs, development is actively reshaping the city’s landscape. Construction firms

are driving this transformation, delivering projects that fuel economic growth while enriching the everyday lives of residents.

These initiatives reflect a long-term commitment to sustainable progress, building a more connected, resilient, and vibrant Omaha. Whether through new community gathering spaces, improved roads and transit systems, or revitalized neighborhoods, today’s projects are designed with both current residents and future generations in mind, laying the foundation for continued prosperity.

Beyond development, Omaha offers an appealing balance of affordability, opportunity, and community. With a cost of living well below the national average, families and young professionals alike find homeownership and quality of life more accessible here than in many larger cities. A strong and diverse economy, anchored by Fortune 500 companies such as Berkshire Hathaway, Mutual of Omaha, and Union Pacific, provides stability and career growth in industries ranging from finance and healthcare to technology. The city also stands out for its family-friendly environment, boasting excellent schools, safe neighborhoods, and world-class attractions like the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium. Add to that a thriving arts and culture scene, short commute times, and the genuine warmth of Midwestern hospitality, and it’s easy to see why Omaha is not just a place to live, but a place to truly thrive.

Their ability to innovate while maintaining a people-first approach sets them apart in today’s competitive market. At the same time, women continue to face challenges such as limited access to capital, fewer networking opportunities, and barriers to scaling. Yet Nebraska women consistently rise above these obstacles, finding creative ways to fund, grow, and strengthen their companies.

What makes women-owned businesses especially noteworthy is their strong sense of community. Many of these leaders are dedicated mentors, guiding the next generation of entrepreneurs while also giving back through philanthropy, volunteerism, and civic involvement. They balance business with family and community life, building companies that reflect not only personal success but also shared values and pride of place. Nearly half of all new businesses started in 2024 were women-owned, underscoring the remarkable momentum of this movement. For Nebraska, that means more opportunity, more innovation, and more stories of perseverance worth celebrating.

Trusted Life Choices

Earlier this year, Trusted Life Choices proudly celebrated 10 years of serving the Omaha community. The agency began as Key Home Care, but as they grew, they found their name was often confused with a competitor. To better reflect the values and stand apart in the market, they rebranded as Trusted Life Choices. The new name captures the heart of their mission—helping clients and families live with dignity, independence, and confidence, knowing their care is in trusted hands.

Founded by a social worker and proudly woman-owned, Trusted Life Choices has built its reputation on compassion, reliability, and advocacy. They are especially proud to employ a team made up primarily of women, many of whom come from diverse backgrounds. Supporting and empowering the caregivers is as important to them as the care they provide to clients, because they believe strong, supported employees provide the best service.

As a locally owned agency, they remain deeply connected to Omaha and the surrounding community. Over the past decade, they’ve walked alongside countless families, providing not just care, but peace of mind. Looking ahead, Trusted Life Choices is committed to continuing that legacy with the same passion and integrity that have carried them through the first 10 years.

Your continued support for these women-owned businesses creates positive rippling effects for communities since those women are able to break gender barriers and inspire future generations. With that said, supporting these women is a key to social impact. According to the Harvard Kennedy School, “Female enterprises are more likely to create social impact through the businesses they create and operate.” Not only that, but women-owned businesses are able to enhance economic power, build stronger communities and promotes social responsibility.
