There’s a certain hum that returns every September—the school buses are rolling, stadium lights flicker on, and gyms across Nebraska echo with volleyball warm-ups. That back-to-school rhythm reminds me why I love this season: it’s a natural reset. As the pace picks up, we get to choose our focus. At Strictly Business, we’re choosing renewed energy, deeper collaboration, and a clear path to finish the year strong—and more profitable.
For many companies, Q4 can feel like a sprint. My encouragement: treat it like a well-coached game plan. Start with the scoreboard—what matters most between now and December 31? Is it lead volume, faster sales cycles, hiring, or donor growth? Once you name it, align your marketing to that outcome. In practice, that means pairing smart print placement with digital follow-through, spotlighting your team and customers in stories that build credibility, and pushing consistent, useful content that makes you the obvious choice.
A few quick plays to consider:
Clarify your message. People are busy; make your offer simple, specific, and easy to act on.
Show your proof. Share wins, testimonials, and case studies. Credibility converts.
Engage the community. Football tailgates, fall festivals, and chamber events are perfect stages to meet new customers.
Support a cause. Our Non-Profit Feature this season highlights organizations doing remarkable work—partner with one and watch your brand goodwill grow.
“Fall brings back the rhythm—now let’s turn that attention into action, and action into profit.”
Coordinate your channels. Print, email, social, events—when your message lands in multiple places, results compound.
You’ll see this same spirit in our pages this month: businesses investing in their people, nonprofits solving real problems, and leaders turning momentum into measurable outcomes. If you have a milestone, expansion, new hire, or community initiative, send it our way— we’re here to help you tell the story well and get it in front of the right audience.
Whether you’re cheering under Friday night lights or catching a Saturday Softball tournament, I hope this season recharges you. Let’s make these final months count with clarity, consistency, and collaboration. Here’s to finishing 2025 with heads high and numbers up.
With gratitude,
Paige Zutavern

There’s something inspiring happening at A View West Shores on Wednesday, September 24. The 28th Annual BBB Torch Awards Luncheon represents more than recognition; it’s a celebration of what makes our regional business community truly exceptional: the commitment to doing what’s right — even when no one is watching.
This year’s honorees tell a powerful story about our region. Eighteen businesses and nonprofits from Nebraska and Southwest Iowa are being recognized alongside winners from Kansas, Missouri and South Dakota, creating a tapestry of organizations that have made integrity the cornerstone of their operations. These aren’t companies that stumbled into ethical practices; they’ve deliberately chosen to build their foundations on trust, transparency and community responsibility.
The addition of a new Veteran-Owned Business category reflects something special about our entrepreneurial landscape. Our veteran business owners bring more than military experience to their enterprises; they carry forward values of service, accountability and commitment to something greater than themselves. Their success stories remind us that business leadership and community leadership often spring from the same source.
What’s remarkable about these Torch Award recipients is how they’ve proven that ethical leadership isn’t a luxury; it’s a practical approach that strengthens every aspect of business operations. When you treat employees with respect, they stay longer and contribute more. When you’re transparent with customers, they become advocates. When you operate with integrity, regulatory compliance becomes second nature rather than a burden.
The ripple effects extend far beyond individual companies. When ethical businesses thrive, they raise the bar for everyone. They create environments where fair dealing becomes the norm, where community investment is expected, and where success is measured not just in profit margins but in positive impact.
This luncheon brings together leaders who understand that business success and community well-being aren’t separate goals; they’re interconnected outcomes of the same principled approach. It’s an opportunity to celebrate what’s already working well in our region and to learn from organizations that have found sustainable ways to put values into practice.
The concentration of purpose-driven leaders in one room creates something rare: a chance to see what’s possible when integrity guides decision-making. These conversations matter because they remind us that our best business practices often emerge from our deepest community values.
Each of these organizations will advance to compete for the International Torch Awards for Ethics, carrying our region’s reputation for principled business practices to a global stage. That’s something worth celebrating, not just for the winners, but for all of us who call this region home.
Information about tickets and sponsorships is available at bbb.org/omahatorch. This event isn’t just about celebrating success; it’s about recognizing the character of our regional business community and the leaders who continue to prove that doing good and doing well aren’t mutually exclusive.

The World Economic Forum forecasts 11 million new AI and data processing jobs by 2030. Integrated MSP is urging businesses to prepare for the upcoming end of support for Windows 10 on Oct. 14, 2025. After that date, Windows 10 will no longer receive security updates, leaving systems vulnerable to cyber threats. Continuing to operate on outdated or unpatched versions of Windows 10 puts businesses at serious risk. Outdated systems are prime targets for ransomware and zero-day attacks, and unsupported systems won’t receive critical patches or fixes. Additionally, using unsupported software can create compliance risks for businesses, potentially putting them out of alignment with industry regulations such as HIPAA, PCI-DSS and others.
Upgrading to the latest version of Windows 11 offers improved performance, better stability, and advanced security features, including enhanced hardware isolation and AI-powered threat protection. Integrated MSP recommends planning the upgrade now to avoid security gaps and ensure a smooth transition. For businesses with hardware that doesn’t support modern security features, Integrated MSP can provide assessment and upgrade options tailored to each organization’s needs and budget.Integrated MSP is dedicated to helping businesses transition securely and efficiently. ALLO Fiber, a leading provider of fiberoptic broadband services, is proud to announce the official launch of its Smart Schools solution in partnership with Lincoln Public Schools (LPS). LPS students can now securely connect their school-issued devices throughout Lincoln and other ALLO communities for an improved learning experience.
This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to digital equity in Lincoln. By utilizing nearly 100,000 business and residential access points in Lincoln, ALLO and LPS are expanding the classroom boundaries and eliminating broadband barriers that disproportionately affect underserved students.
“This is truly a community approach that leverages beacons of network access dispersed throughout the neighborhoods served by our schools,” said Chief Technology Officer for Lincoln Public Schools, Kirk Langer.
“Just as roads are critical infrastructure for economic development, Smart Schools is critical infrastructure for the educational development of Lincoln Public Schools’ learners. ALLO has deployed thousands of high-speed connection points to advance digital learning opportunities.”
Built on ALLO’s powerful SmartTown Wi-Fi infrastructure powered by Calix (NYSE-CALX), Smart Schools enables 2,000 students in grades 6–12 to automatically connect their school-issued computers to highspeed Wi-Fi from virtually anywhere - whether at school, at a local business, in a community venue or at home. This education-optimized connectivity greatly supports students’ academic success.
“We’re thrilled to work alongside Lincoln Public Schools to enhance learning opportunities,” said ALLO President, Brad Moline. “Smart Schools is more than just connectivity; it’s about empowering students, supporting educators and helping close the gap across Lancaster County. The Covid-era learning limitations and poor quality hot spot services conceptualized the Smart Schools solution. The vision of LPS, Calix and the ALLO team is now reality after 5 years of development.”

Roof Rejuvenate Nebraska has been in business for one year, offering homeowners an affordable, eco-friendly solution that breathes new life into aging shingles without the high cost or waste of full roof replacement.
Each treatment uses a USDA-certified, plant-based oil that restores shingles’ flexibility and waterproofing. Not only does this extend a roof’s life by five or more years, but it also helps keep thousands of tons of roofing waste out of landfills every year. That means homeowners save money and reduce their environmental footprint in one smart move.
Owner Luke Schwartz saw an opportunity to bring real value to Nebraska homeowners: “People shouldn’t have to choose between protecting their home and protecting the planet. We’re here to make sure they don’t.”
Backed by a five-year transferable warranty and priced at a fraction of the cost of replacement, Roof Rejuvenate Nebraska is a win-win for wallets and the environment.

Thirty hospitals in Nebraska are among the 4,800 nationwide that participate in the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines® initiative to improve outcomes for Americans who experience heart disease or stroke.
Heart disease and stroke are the No. 1 and No. 5 causes of death in the United States, respectively. These health crises require swift and proven treatment to ensure the best outcomes for patients. The American Heart Association, celebrating 100 years of work to advance health and hope, sets the standards for high-quality, science-based care and access that all patients deserve.
Michelle Bolles, senior vice president of quality outcomes, research and analytics, said that someone in America has a stroke or heart attack every 40 seconds.
“High-quality care should be accessible to all, and sites awarded through the ‘Get With The Guidelines’ program help work toward our shared vision of health and hope for everyone, everywhere,” Bolles said.
Each year, the American Heart Association recognizes hospitals across the country for consistently following up-to-date, researchbased guidelines to ensure all patients have access to lifesaving care. In Nebraska, 30 hospitals were recognized in the following cities: Bellevue, Lincoln, Omaha, Kearney, Grand Island, Columbus, Cozad, Crete, Norfolk, North Platte, Gothenburg, Fairbury, Broken Bow, Kimball, Blair, Hastings, Fremont, Auburn, Tecumseh, Wayne, Scottsbluff and Hebron.

Reliable childcare is one of the biggest barriers facing families experiencing homelessness. Since opening in July 2024, the Florence M. Lakin Child Development Center at MICAH House has provided trauma-informed care to 27 children from MICAH House and 52 from the broader community—giving parents the stability they need to secure jobs, housing and a fresh start.
With six classrooms, an indoor gym and outdoor play areas, the 12,000-square-foot center offers a safe, nurturing environment for children ages six months to six years. In its first year alone, seven families transitioned into permanent housing thanks in part to this vital resource.
As they enter their second year, they need your support to keep this critical work going. Your donation helps provide consistent care, educational supplies and everyday essentials that empower families to thrive. Join them in breaking the cycle, because every child deserves a strong, quality early education no matter their circumstances.

After a purposeful pause in 2024, Project Intentional, Inc. is proud to announce its return to community programming and the revival of its beloved holiday initiative, now rebranded as the “Love Can Store.”
The event will take place on Sunday, Nov. 2, at Baxter Arena and will serve 300 single caregivers and their families. More than just a holiday store, the Love Can Store creates a dignified space where families can access winter essentials, household basics, and meaningful resources—all at no cost.
Building on the success of past initiatives, Project Intentional continues to highlight practical ways the community can make a difference. From everyday items like warm socks and personal care products to opportunities for businesses and individuals to sponsor families, the nonprofit emphasizes that love is most powerful when it meets real needs.
“We’ve evolved from our Winter Wonderland Emporium to something more focused, more intentional—but the love remains,” said Sasha Berscheid, Founder of Project Intentional. “We’re thrilled to reimagine this tradition and give families not just gifts, but dignity and hope.”

Walk with more than 3,000 people to help find a cure for type 1 diabetes (T1D) at this year’s Breakthrough T1D Walk on Sunday, October 5, at Mahoney State Park. Festivities begin at 11:30 a.m. and the walk starts at 1 p.m.
The Breakthrough T1D Walk raises awareness for T1D and funds research to cure, treat and prevent T1D and its complications.
T1D is an autoimmune condition diagnosed in both children and adults and is unrelated to diet or lifestyle. In people with T1D, the pancreas stops producing insulin—a hormone essential to turning food into energy. Managing T1D requires constant blood-sugar monitoring, insulin injections or infusions via a pump, and careful attention to diet and activity every day.
By participating in the Breakthrough T1D Walk, you’ll support a growing movement to change life with T1D and help advance lifechanging breakthroughs on the path to a cure.
Register for the Walk today at walk.BreakthroughT1D.org/omaha.
For questions about this event, including sponsorship opportunities, contact Chris Dunn, market director, at (402) 214-0638 or cdunn@ BreakthroughT1D.org.

11,000
Did you know that 11,000 Nebraskans are diagnosed with cancer each year, and 1 in 4 cancer patients will not recover because they cannot afford the care they need? The Heartland Cancer Foundation (HCF) believes no cancer patient should fall behind on treatment because they struggle to afford their everyday expenses.
This is an issue that needs to be addressed in our community. Fortunately, there are several types of gifts that support local cancer patients who are struggling financially while also creating a more sustainable future for the foundation and its long-term impact. Through legacy giving, individuals have the opportunity to leave a lasting impact on the lives of those battling cancer by including the foundation in their estate planning. These legacy gifts help ensure that future generations of cancer patients receive the much-needed aid they deserve. Recurring giving also plays a pivotal role, as it creates a steady and dependable source of funding for the foundation’s ongoing efforts, such as planning and executing long-term programs and events, awareness and outreach, and offering extended aid to patients during their entire treatment journey.
Finally, setting up a donor-advised fund offers numerous advantages. It simplifies the giving process, consolidates multiple charitable donations into a single fund, offers flexibility in timing charitable donations, and donors can take an immediate tax deduction. Learn more about the Heartland Cancer Foundation at heartlandcancerfoundation.org.
Carole’s House of Hope, a transitional living program supporting young women aging out of foster care and other vulnerable circumstances, is proud to announce a new partnership that’s already making a meaningful impact on residents’ daily lives.
Thanks to the generosity of Longview Renovation, the organization recently added custom-built storage lockers to its facility. This is an upgrade that may seem simple but has transformed the way residents settle into the home. Many women arrive with everything they own in tow, and now, for the first time, they have secure, spacious lockers to safely store extra belongings. The added sense of organization, privacy and dignity helps create a stronger foundation for healing and growth.
“We’re incredibly grateful for Longview Renovation’s donation of both materials and labor,” said Carole Kinlow, founder of Carole’s House of Hope. “It’s a beautiful example of community stepping up in meaningful ways.”
The organization also welcomed a new partnership with Sustainable Heating and Air, which will provide discounted HVAC services moving forward. Their support ensures residents remain safe and comfortable year-round while helping the nonprofit stretch its resources even further.
These collaborations are just the latest in a series of community partnerships that continue to strengthen Carole’s House of Hope and its mission of helping women rebuild, reclaim and rise.

The 2025 Step-Up Omaha initiative once again demonstrated the power of youth, community and collaboration in North Omaha. Presented by Empowerment Network, this year’s program celebrated its 17th year with record-breaking engagement and a showcase that highlighted the city’s next generation of leaders and creators.
More than 1,700 young people applied for internships, entrepreneurial training and career explorations. The culmination of their summer work was shown at the historic Lizzie Robinson Avenue site. More than 100 youth presented projects spanning technology, music production, videography, culinary arts and sports careers. The showcase was a powerful reminder of what’s possible when investment meets opportunity. The Step-Up program aligns with the broader vision of the Empowerment Network’s Transformation 2030. It’s an initiative that supports employment and economic growth from within our own community. With over 9,000 youth served since 2008, Step-Up Omaha continues to drive real impact in employment, education and entrepreneurship. Supported by a network of funders and partners, Step-Up is an investment in Omaha’s future. The initiative receives support from partners like the City of Omaha, the Charles E. Lakin Foundation and the Obama Foundation’s and My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) Alliance, a program that shifts outcomes for young men of color through the implementation of evidence-based practices, which address six MBK milestones, cradle to career, during a young person’s life. September 9–11: Serving Up Support for the Blind and Visually Impaired
Outlook Enrichment and Villagio Pizzeria (6922 N. 102nd Circle, Omaha, NE 68122) are teaming up to bring the community together for Pies & Pasta with Purpose, a threeday fundraising event benefiting individuals who are blind or visually impaired. From Sept. 9–11, a portion of ALL sales (dine-in and takeout) will be donated to Outlook Enrichment to help fund programs and resources for people living with vision loss. Please note: third-party delivery orders through DoorDash, GrubHub, etc. are excluded.
Everyone is invited to join for great food and fun at Villagio Pizzeria — community members, Outlook supporters, and anyone who loves great food for a great cause. Guests can enjoy interactive activities like a blind putting game and prize wheel throughout the event.
Villagio Pizzeria has been family-owned and operated since its opening in 2013. Today, Quinn Stuart, son of founder Tim Stuart, continues the tradition of quality Italian food and community connection. The Stuart family is passionate about giving back, especially to causes that hit close to home.
“My dad lives with a visual impairment, so we know firsthand how important Outlook Enrichment’s work is,” said Quinn Stuart. ”We love being part of their mission to help people adapt and thrive after vision loss, and this event is a great way for us to celebrate that while serving our food to the community.”

Nearly 500 United Way of the Midlands (UWM) volunteers came together August 5-8 to brighten students’ days by assembling more than 5,400 Shine Bright kits at the Mid-America Center.
As we start a new school year, thousands of students lack essential hygiene items such as soap, shampoo, conditioner and dental products, which can affect their health, academics and confidence. Each Shine Bright kit contains full-sized hygiene items students need to feel good and succeed in the classroom and in life.
Shine Bright is a partnership between United Way of the Midlands, Omaha and Council Bluffs Public Schools, Papillion La Vista Schools, JAG Nebraska and others. With community support, Shine Bright partners distributed the assembled Shine Bright kits to kindergarten, sixth- and ninth-grade students in need throughout the community and to JAG Nebraska students across the state. “Right now, families across the metro are truly struggling to make ends meet,” said Shawna Forsberg, president and CEO of United Way of the Midlands. “That means many have to make tough choices with their finances, often leaving them without hygiene products like soap or dental products. Together, we are helping students get the items they need so they’re ready to learn and can ‘shine bright’ in school.”
Shine Bright 2025 was possible thanks to supporting sponsors Centris Federal Credit Union, Delta Dental of Nebraska, Google, Mid-America Center and Tim and Terri Burke, along with community sponsors Election Systems & Software, Fiserv, Liberty Packaging, Penske, Wellabe, Werner® and WoodmenLife. In today’s world, consumers are increasingly drawn to businesses that prioritize sustainability. Keep Nebraska Beautiful (KNB) recognizes the need to celebrate those green businesses that lead by example.
The Sustainability Seal program honors businesses that integrate sustainable practices into their daily operations. The judging process will evaluate the depth and impact of these practices, awarding businesses that pass our short online application. From waste reduction and energy efficiency to eco-friendly packaging and green initiatives or more, KNB aims to spotlight businesses going above and beyond.
For businesses that receive the Sustainability Seal, the benefits are far-reaching. In addition to receiving a static window sticker to proudly display, each recipient will be showcased in a series profiling their commitment to sustainability. These features will be shared across our platforms and website, helping recipients generate positive visibility among the growing base of eco-conscious consumers. This is a unique chance for Nebraska’s businesses to not only share their green efforts but to inspire others in their communities to take meaningful action.
We invite Nebraska organizations to apply for the Sustainability Seal Program and be part of the solution. Show that profitability and sustainability can go hand in hand, inspiring businesses throughout Nebraska to operate with purpose, pride and a commitment to the environment. Vision Maker Media’s (VMM) mission is empowering and engaging Native people to share stories while envisioning a world changed and healed by understanding Native stories and the public conversations they generate. VMM educational programs include the Native American Film Series and iNative Shorts for Kids, which sparks dialogue and deepens awareness of Native life and culture.
On September 8, the Native American Film Series at The Ross Theater will feature “Across the Creek” and “Finding Refuge.” Both films touch on the importance of cultural identity. “Across the Creek” is a conversation between the elder and younger generations about reclaiming their stories and culture. By looking at traditional family structure, spirituality, language and values, they hope to build a vision for the future. “Finding Refuge” shows how one woman’ s efforts to preserve her heritage inspires a community’s renewal of cultural pride.
For free tickets, visit theross.org.
VMM’s iNative Shorts for Kids is a series on VMM’s YouTube channel, featuring short, curated videos from VMM’s extensive film archive. The first episodes in September conclude the series on the theme, “Leaders of Tomorrow.” Each episode during this theme has highlighted the potential of young people to make a difference in Native American communities. The second set of episodes released in September begin to examine the importance of identity by focusing on people who are rediscovering the significance of their culture.

Across the Omaha metro area, senior living and wellness providers are redefining how care, support and health are delivered. From personalized in-home services to skilled rehabilitation and cuttingedge skeletal health programs, organizations are prioritizing independence, dignity and overall well-being for older adults and those with specialized needs.
First, we have Bridge to Better Living ; a service offering guidance and assistance in navigating the process of finding a retirement community. They make sure you feel confident in your decision.
Mary Ann Stallings, President and CEO of Bridge to Better Living, emphasizes the importance of personalized guidance when choosing senior living options. “Our Transition Consultants prioritize each client’s unique needs because no two seniors are alike in their journey. We help seniors and their families explore options such as location, meal plans, staffing, fitness facilities and more to create a personalized plan fitting their lifestyle,” she says. For CareTech, community is not defined by a building or campus—it unfolds anywhere a client calls home. Founded in 1999 and devoted exclusively to nonmedical, in-home care, the company brings compassionate support into living rooms, kitchens and hearts across Nebraska.
From bustling suburbs to rural towns, each home becomes part of CareTech’s extended family, where personalized care, trust and dignity flourish.
CareTech serves seniors, adults and children with disabilities, individuals recovering from hospital stays or living with traumatic brain injury and veterans. Its services include personal care such as bathing, grooming, dressing and toileting; dementia care and memory support; companion care and social engagement; post-hospital transitions; 24-hour and respite care; and veterans’ home care.
The organization’s approach is grounded in the belief that care is most effective when it is familiar, provided within the comfort of home and delivered by compassionate professionals rooted in respect,
warmth and empathy. As one of Nebraska’s largest Medicaid Waiver providers, CareTech makes critical care accessible through flexible, client-centered models. Families consistently report that the company brings peace of mind, with loved ones not just cared for but genuinely understood and engaged.
As the industry shifts from traditional facility-based care to personalized at-home models that honor independence and mental well-being, CareTech has expanded services such as 24-hour care, post-hospital support, dementia-specific programming and companion care that fosters belonging. Team culture is central, with caregivers and support staff empowered and respected, enabling them to bring warmth, reliability and joy into every home. Community engagement remains a priority, with partnerships, volunteer efforts and connections to schools, veterans’ groups and resource networks strengthening the impact of care across Nebraska.
In contrast to in-home services, Brookestone Village offers a physical campus in Omaha that combines skilled rehabilitation with long-term care. The community features private and companion accommodations, outdoor spaces and amenities designed to foster a strong sense of belonging for residents and families.
Brookestone Village provides short-term rehabilitation, long-term skilled nursing care, memory support and outpatient therapy. Its interdisciplinary team serves adults recovering from surgery or illness, those with chronic medical needs and individuals requiring 24/7 support.
The community’s strength lies in its relationships. Residents, families, staff and partners form a tightly knit network where everyone is known by name and treated with dignity. Lifestyle and enrichment are prioritized through activities, therapies and community engagement opportunities that support whole-person wellness.
As part of the Vetter Senior Living family, Brookestone emphasizes a culture of care that goes beyond clinical support. Excellence in service, teamwork and resident choice guides operations, ensuring dignity, individualized care and meaningful personal connections. Families value open communication and transparency, while residents appreciate attention to detail in meals, cleanliness and celebrations of milestones.
The industry is seeing growing emphasis on individualized care plans, technology integration and resident-led programming. Brookestone has responded by enhancing rehabilitation services, incorporating innovative therapy programs and using resident feedback to shape engaging experiences. Short-term rehab and transitional care demand has grown, and Brookestone has strengthened partnerships with local providers to meet these needs. Team culture drives resident experience, with supportive, valued and purpose-driven staff contributing to high-quality care. Community engagement is woven into daily life, from intergenerational programs with local schools to volunteer projects like making sandwiches for the Open Door Mission and participating in quarterly service initiatives for organizations such as Food Bank for the Heartland, the Miss Kay Foundation and Vetter Gives. The business world operates at breakneck speed, driven by relentless competition for market share, customer loyalty and profit maximization. In this high-stakes environment, the pressure to cut corners, expedite processes, and prioritize immediate gains over long-term principles can be overwhelming. Taking measured steps that occasionally slow the process down — pausing to ensure ethical alignment, consulting stakeholders, or choosing the harder but more principled path — isn’t always the popular decision. More often than not, it’s the road less traveled.
That is precisely why recognizing those that consistently choose integrity over expediency becomes not just important, but essential to the health of our entire economic ecosystem. The Better Business Bureau’s comprehensive awards portfolio exists to illuminate and celebrate the students, leaders, businesses and nonprofits that refuse to compromise their values, even when faced with difficult choices that could impact their bottom line.
Ethics transcend corporate buzzwords and compliance checklists. They represent the fundamental framework for conducting fair, honest and sustainable business — the right way, every time, especially when circumstances make ethical choices challenging or costly. In an era where consumer trust
has become a scarce commodity and corporate scandals dominate headlines, ethical business practices serve as the bedrock upon which lasting success is built.
BBB Midwest Plains takes immense pride in serving as a driving force behind creating a more trustworthy and integrity-driven business landscape throughout its five-state region: Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and South Dakota. For more than a century, its mission has been unwavering: to be the leader in advancing marketplace trust. This responsibility permeates every aspect of the organization, from its daily operations to its strategic initiatives. It is embraced personally by each team member who understands the profound impact of their work on the broader business community.
The annual Torch Awards Luncheon serves as a signature moment when recognition, education and inspiration converge to honor those who exemplify the highest standards of business ethics.
This event has evolved into more than a ceremony. It has become a catalyst for ethical transformation across the region.
BBB’s annual awards portfolio includes the Torch Awards for Ethics, Spark Awards, Torch Awards for Veteran-Owned Businesses and Students of Integrity Scholarships. It creates a systematic, multi-layered approach to identifying, celebrating and amplifying best practices in ethics. These programs serve critical dual purposes: recognizing students, leaders, and organizations that consistently prioritize integrity in their decision-making processes, while simultaneously establishing industry benchmarks that drive measurable ethical improvement across entire sectors.
The success of these awards programs depends heavily on the extraordinary dedication and generous support of dozens of local business, nonprofit and educational leaders across the Midwest, who serve as BBB’s independent judging panel. These volunteer judges — many of whom are former award recipients themselves — donated countless hours to meticulously evaluating entries and providing thoughtful, constructive feedback to every single applicant, a commitment that represents no small feat in today’s demanding business environment. This peer-to-peer recognition model creates a powerful legacy effect, as previous honorees literally “pass the torch” to emerging leaders, fostering a self-perpetuating cycle of ethical excellence.
Through this rigorous, collaborative process, BBB Midwest Plains is proud to present 30 exceptional businesses, 2 of which are veteran-led, 17 students, and
one business leader for recognition at this year’s luncheon. This diverse group of honorees represents organizations and individuals who have successfully transformed ethics and integrity from abstract boardroom concepts into foundational, non-negotiable elements of their operational DNA, demonstrating that principled leadership is not just an aspiration, but an achievable business strategy that drives lasting success. These distinguished honorees carry stories that serve as powerful testimonials to the reality that ethical business practices and commercial success are not mutually exclusive; rather, they are complementary forces that, when properly aligned, create sustainable competitive advantages and lasting value.
Recognizing that ethical excellence should be accessible to all businesses regardless of size or resources, BBB maintains its commitment to inclusivity through its awards program structure. There are no costs associated with applying for or earning these awards. This deliberate approach
ensures that ethical practices are recognized and celebrated across the entire business spectrum, from early-stage organizations to established multinational corporations, creating a level playing field where character and integrity take precedence over organizational size or membership status.
This year’s exceptional honorees will be celebrated at the 28th annual BBB Torch Awards Luncheon on September 24 at A View West Shores in Waterloo, Nebraska. This gathering transcends traditional recognition ceremonies, serving as a dynamic platform for knowledge sharing, best practice dissemination, and collaborative learning among ethical business leaders throughout its five-state region.
The BBB Torch Awards for Ethics program serves as a cornerstone initiative that reinforces and amplifies the critical role ethical leadership plays in maintaining consumer trust, fostering sustainable business growth, and creating resilient economic communities in
today’s increasingly complex and competitive marketplace. These awards cultivate a culture of integrity that drives measurable business outcomes while establishing the ethical standards that define thriving communities. From emerging student leaders to seasoned executives and established organizations, BBB remains committed to supporting all stakeholders who champion ethical principles — the fundamental values that form the bedrock of the prosperous, trustworthy communities we are proud to call home. Through these efforts, BBB continues to build an enduring legacy of ethical excellence that will deliver tangible benefits to businesses and consumers for generations to come. This year’s honorees represent the full spectrum of American enterprise — from family-owned businesses and utility providers to billion-dollar organizations — united by their unwavering commitment to ethical leadership. These organizations have implemented transformative initiatives that prove ethical practices drive tangible results: comprehensive employee volunteer programs that strengthen community ties, sustainable supply chain practices that reduce environmental impact while controlling costs, and customer-centric relationship strategies that build lasting loyalty and market differentiation.
Their stories demonstrate that ethical excellence isn’t just the right thing to do — it’s smart business strategy. Organizations compete for the Torch Awards for Ethics within size-appropriate categories across BBB Midwest Plains’ five regional markets: Omaha and Southwest Iowa, Lincoln and Greater Nebraska, Kansas Plains, Kansas City and Western Missouri, and South Dakota. This structure allows businesses of all scales to compete on equal footing, recognizing that ethical leadership manifests differently across various organizational sizes and market contexts.

Military service cultivates distinctive leadership qualities: integrity, accountability, and mission-driven excellence. Recognizing this unique perspective, BBB Midwest Plains launched the Torch Awards for VeteranOwned Businesses in 2025, establishing a dedicated platform to honor companies where military-trained leaders transform their service experience into entrepreneurial success.
This inaugural program maintained the BBB’s commitment to peer recognition, with veteran business leaders serving as judges to evaluate and select recipients. Two standout winners demonstrate the program’s mission: Semper Fido Mobile Pet Nail Trimming (Omaha, NE) and AList Professionals (Olathe, KS). Both organizations exemplify how military values seamlessly translate into exceptional business practices, operational excellence, and measurable community impact, proving that veteran-owned businesses bring unique strengths to today’s competitive marketplace.

The BBB Spark Awards, now in its third year, targets a critical business reality: the ethical foundations established during a company’s formative years often determine its long-term market trajectory. This program recognizes emerging business leaders who demonstrate exceptional ethical leadership precisely when competitive pressures and growth demands make such choices most challenging — and most defining.
Nathan Gallagher, owner of Building Dreams Renovations in Lees Summit, MO, earned the 2025 Spark Award by implementing transparency-first business practices. His approach demonstrates how ethical leadership during growth phases doesn’t just build customer loyalty — it establishes sustainable market positioning that drives long-term profitability and business resilience.

BBB invests more than $30,000 annually in its Students of Integrity Scholarship program, strategically targeting graduating high school seniors who demonstrate exceptional ethical leadership potential. The initiative prioritizes first-generation college students and those pursuing higher education within BBB’s five-state service territory, a deliberate investment in developing tomorrow’s principled business leaders within the regional market.
This approach supports emerging talent where it’s needed most while cultivating the next generation of ethical leaders who will drive economic growth across Midwestern communities. The program’s impact extends far beyond individual scholarships, creating a pipeline of integrity-driven professionals who will shape the future business landscape.
The 2025 scholarship recipients represent the remarkable diversity and potential of regional talent. These 17 students — selected from more than 670 applicants — hail from communities ranging from small towns of fewer than 1,000 residents to metropolitan areas exceeding 250,000. Their career aspirations span medical professions and business leadership, cybersecurity expertise and

Andrew Ozaki, the Murrow Award-winning journalist who recently retired after four decades at KETV NewsWatch 7, has been named this year’s BBB Rising Champion. Throughout his distinguished career covering the Nebraska Legislature, governor’s office, agriculture, sports, and virtually every beat imaginable, Ozaki distinguished himself through prolific consumer protection reporting that directly safeguarded public interests while holding businesses and business leaders accountable to the highest ethical standards.
Over 40 years, Ozaki’s investigative journalism functioned as a critical market watchdog, systematically challenging companies that prioritized profit over ethical responsibility. His work empowered families to make informed purchasing decisions while simultaneously pressuring businesses to adopt more ethical practices. His work created a measurable deterrent effect — leaders knew that unethical behavior would face scrutiny and public accountability. Ozaki’s commitment to ethical journalism extended beyond professional obligations. So dedicated to serving the public interest, he famously arrived late to his own retirement party because he was completing a story. His coverage of natural disasters, including the devastating Hallam Tornado, exemplified his approach: comprehensive reporting that supported community recovery.
The Rising Champion Award, now in its second year, recognizes individuals who proactively protect consumers and strengthen community trust through unwavering ethical leadership.
