A Paige From My Notebook...

November is a month that invites reflection. With Thanksgiving on the horizon, I’m reminded of how much we have to be grateful for—our families, our communities, and the many small businesses and nonprofits that make Nebraska such a special place to call home. Gratitude is powerful; it shifts our focus from what’s missing to what’s meaningful, and it reminds us to give back where we can.

We also pause this month to honor Veterans Day. To all who have served, and to the families who have stood beside them, we extend our deepest respect and appreciation. Your sacrifices safeguard the freedoms we enjoy every day, including the freedom to pursue our work, our dreams, and our lives in safety.

genuine human connection. That’s what we remain committed to here at Strictly Business: telling the real stories of real people and organizations in our community.

As we celebrate the holidays and look toward a new year, I believe it’s more important than ever to slow down and invest in what is real. That might mean choosing to shop local, spending time with family, or supporting a nonprofit that makes a difference. Authenticity isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a practice, a choice we make every day to live with honesty and gratitude.

“I hope you’ll find inspiration in the people and businesses who continue to do things the right way—with integrity, hard work, and heart.”

At the same time, November also finds us in a rapidly changing digital world. The explosion of AI-generated content—what some have aptly called “slop”—is flooding the internet at a staggering pace. While technology can be a powerful tool, we must not lose sight of the value of authentic voices, lived experiences, and

As you turn the pages of this issue, I hope you’ll find inspiration in the people and businesses who continue to do things the right way—with integrity, hard work, and heart. That’s what authenticity looks like, and it’s what keeps our community strong. Wishing you a November filled with gratitude, reflection, and authenticity.

Warm regards,

Brad Moline: Building Connections Beyond Fiber

When you meet Brad Moline, ALLO’s President and CEO, it doesn’t take long to see that his leadership is driven by people. Born and raised in Nebraska, Brad’s career took him across the country to executive positions that taught him how companies scale and innovate. When he and Jill decided to return home to raise their family, he brought with him a renewed purpose to build something lasting for the people and communities that shaped him.

Before founding ALLO, Brad served as Senior Vice President of Finance at Birch Telecom in Kansas City, helping guide its exponential growth from a regional provider to a national player. He also navigated the initial public offering of Covenant Logistics, a transportation company in Chattanooga, and continues to serve on their board. Eventually, they were missing the sense of connection that came from small-town life, the kind where you know your neighbors by name and every handshake means something.

That personal belief that, like transportation, technology should bring people closer together, not further apart, is woven into ALLO’s DNA. Since 2003, ALLO has developed one of the most advanced all-fiber networks in the nation, delivering broadband, telephone, cyber, and video services. ALLO has grown to serve more than 53 communities with 1.4 million population across Nebraska, Colorado, Arizona, and Missouri, with worldclass communication services.

What makes ALLO’s success stand out is the team, not just technology. Brad has cultivated professionals - engineers, operators, and local experts - who have a passion for service and innovation. Together, they work hand in hand with customers, developing creative ways to use ALLO’s fiber network to expand business opportunities, create jobs, and improve the quality of life in every community they serve. “We’re in the business of connection,” Brad often says, “and that goes beyond fiber. It’s about connecting people and businesses to opportunity, information, and each other.”

Within ALLO, Brad’s leadership is known for being hands-on and grounded. Whether he is working with communities, participating in local events, or discussing ALLO’s unique culture with a new teammate, he leads by example: approachable, engaged, and genuinely curious. His open-door approach has fostered a passion for customer service rooted in ALLO’s core values – Honest, Hassle-Free, Exceptional, and Local, the same traits that define the communities ALLO serves.

Outside of work, Brad is a Nebraskan at heart. He and Jill enjoy time with family (new grandparents), supporting local communities through Jill’s grocery stores and volunteering, and the satisfaction of seeing neighbors thrive. Their story reminds us that true leadership is about vision, values, and staying true to your roots.

HBAL’S Santa Cop Project Helps Spread Holiday Cheer in Lincoln

The Home Builders Association of Lincoln’s Santa Cop Project is planned for Saturday, November 15, beginning at 8 a.m., at Lincoln Northeast High School. This annual event brings together HBAL members, their families and community volunteers to build wooden toys that will be gifted to children in need by the Lincoln Police Department.

Over the decades, HBAL members have built over 2,200 toys for the program. “This is one of our most rewarding traditions,” said Dan Loeck.

Tobacco Free Lancaster County (TFLC) invites residents to join Quit Tobacco Week from November 17–21 and the Great American Smoke out Day on November 20. This annual campaign encourages individuals to take their first step toward quitting nicotine, including smoking, vaping, chew and pouches, while providing resources to support long-term success.

Quitting nicotine can be challenging, impacting not only physical health, but also mental well-being, relationships, finances and the environment. TFLC emphasizes the importance of creating a community that supports individuals in their journey to live tobacco and nicotine free.

TFLC provides quit kits containing helpful items such as gum, mints, fidgets and stress balls, along with cinnamon-flavored toothpicks, educational tools, posters, flyers, yard signs, social media graphics and more. These resources make it easy for individuals, families, schools and local businesses to support the campaign and spread awareness about quitting nicotine.

This initiative is funded by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services/Tobacco Free Nebraska Program, through an appropriation by the Nebraska State Legislature.

The toys produced will be distributed by Lincoln Police officers to children they encounter who could use extra cheer during the holiday season. HBAL members are encouraged to bring their families as Santa Claus is scheduled to make an appearance at 9 a.m. It is also a fun opportunity for students to earn service hours. Participation helps further the mission of the Lincoln Home Builders Care Foundation; supporting charitable and educational causes related to housing and community wellbeing.

For more information, visit hbal.org.

Community members can sign up at TobaccoFreeLancasterCounty. org/quittobaccoweek to participate and access a variety of free resources. Sweet Things By Marcy

Sumner Place Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Holds Annual Fall Picnic

Sumner Place Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation recently held its annual Fall Picnic for residents and their families on Thursday, Sept. 18. The event is a tradition that celebrates togetherness and fun over a meal.

Every year, Sumner Place chooses a theme for the picnic. This year’s Wild West theme featured exotic animals from Wildlife Encounters, including a joey kangaroo and a 3-banded armadillo. One team member also brought a miniature horse, which was a hit among the residents and their families.

The picnic featured partial catering, including fried chicken and a funnel cake truck, along with Sumner Place’s culinary team offering cheesy potatoes, green beans, and fresh lemonade and iced tea.

Great food and exotic animals were not the only entertainment at the picnic. Sumner Place had raffle baskets that were filled with goodies and handmade decorations for the fall season. These were given by residents’ family members and were auctioned off to raise funds for the Vetter Gives Foundation.

This foundation was formed by Vetter Health Services, Jack and Eldora Vetter, in 1992 to support various Christian organizations serving the less fortunate and to improve the quality of education in health care. Sumner Place was thrilled to host the event and recognize the residents, families and community partners whose contributions made it so special.

CultureReallyDoesEatStrategyForBreakfast - Leadership Harbor Brings the Scorecard to the Table

Leadership Harbor has unveiled its newest resource, the Culture Impact Scorecard, a groundbreaking tool designed to make organizational culture measurable, actionable and transformational.

For years, businesses have recognized that culture drives performance — yet few have known how to measure or intentionally improve it.

The Culture Impact Scorecard changes that. Using 10 key points of culture, the Scorecard evaluates an organization’s current environment, revealing strengths and growth opportunities in areas such as communication, trust, accountability and engagement.

Once assessed, Leadership Harbor partners with organizations to create a customized culture strategy that aligns with their mission, values and goals. The result: teams that stay focused, efficient and productive — while increasing loyalty and reducing turnover.

“Culture isn’t just what happens by accident; it’s what happens by design,” says Leadership Harbor’s team. “Now leaders can measure it, improve it and watch their people and performance thrive.”

The Culture Impact Scorecard is now available to organizations ready to elevate their culture from good to great.

Elite Referral Network Hosts Monthly Tuesday Morning Club

The Elite Referral Network (ERN) invites local professionals to connect, collaborate, and grow through its monthly Tuesday Morning Club, held the second Tuesday of every month from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Each meeting takes place at a different local coffee shop, giving members the chance to network in a relaxed, communityfocused setting. This month’s meeting will be held at Scooter’s Coffee, 68th & O Street, on Tuesday, November 12.

Founded on the belief that “your network is your net worth,” ERN was created to bring together professionals who want to invest in themselves and their businesses. The organization cultivates friendly, high-energy environments where members can exchange quality referrals, share leads and learn from one another through business education and mentorship.

Within the Elite Referral Network, members gain access to a community of like-minded professionals committed to collaboration and trust. Each group features protected industry seats (10–20 members per group), ensuring that every participant becomes the go-to expert in their field.

Building a strong referral network requires more than just showing up—it’s about forming genuine relationships with people you like, know, and trust. Their mission is to help professionals grow their business through meaningful connections and continued education. ERN is accepting applications to have different businesses’ shopping booth at their Ho Ho Holiday Shopping event on Dec. 13 from noon to 4 p.m. at Nebraska Knockerball. All booths must have something available for the public to buy to be considered for this event. Community members are encouraged to attend this event and explore what products these businesses are offering.

2026 Enrollment Readiness

What Open Enrollment season runs between November 1st and January 15th?

a. The ACA (Affordable Care Act)

b. The Marketplace

c. Obamacare

d. All of the above

Choosing “D” is correct! The Federally Facilitated Marketplace, originally dubbed Obamacare, but also known as the Affordable Care Act, features an Open Enrollment period annually between November 1st and January 15th. Here are some questions heard every fall: Who can enroll in the Marketplace? - Anyone who does not qualify for Medicaid, Medicare, or does not have access to affordable employer-based coverage.

I’m planning to retire in March; do I need to enroll in a plan now? - No. Whenever someone leaves an employer-sponsored plan to retire or start a new job that doesn’t offer coverage, they will have a Special Enrollment Period to choose a plan on the Marketplace at any point during the year.

My COBRA is really expensive; can I switch to Marketplace coverage now? - Yes. This is when you are able to voluntarily leave your current COBRA plan by choice and begin what is often a more affordable plan option for January 1st or February 1st.

Will I be penalized for not having health insurance? In 2019 the penalty for not having coverage was eliminated.

MUST I renew my plan every year? - Technically, no. However, there could also be new plans with better coverage or benefits and lower premiums available. We advise updating your application annually to ensure you have the plan that best suits your needs.

Will I be penalized for making too much money? - At the time this article is being written, the expanded tax credits offered through the Inflation Reduction Act are sun setting at the end of 2025. This means there will once again be an income “cliff” beyond which a tax household will not qualify for any tax credits to offset their monthly premium expense. This cliff is set at 400% of the Federal Poverty Limit. For tax households the size of 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 those numbers are: $62,600; $84,600; $106,600; $128,600 and $150,600. It will be imperative for those enrolling in Marketplace coverage to carefully manage their 2026 income as to avoid paying back all of the tax credit. The option is to find an ACA alternative for 2026 in order to avoid the income “cliff.”

For answers to your questions about the Marketplace or help finding an ACA alternative, contact the licensed insurance agents at On Point Insurance Agency. We are here to help!

STAR CITY SIX JOCELYN

LEGACY RETIREMENT COMMUNITIES

Jocelyn Fitzgerald is the Executive Director at Legacy Arbors.

Tell us a little bit about your business. - For the past 30 years, Legacy Retirement Communities has been home to amazing people who have gone through many walks of life. We have four different communities that serve Lincoln (Legacy on 56th, Legacy Terrace and Legacy Arbors Memory Care on 57th and Legacy Estates on 72nd) and multiple living styles within our communities that empower seniors to live how they desire.

How did you get started in the business? - When I was 16 years old, my mother told me to go and get a job. The Legacy on 56th and Pioneers was three blocks away from where we lived, so I wondered if they would have a job for me. I got hired as a server in the dining room and immediately fell in love with the community and the people I was fortunate to serve. I was hooked and knew I wanted to work with seniors. I have worked in many departments within The Legacy Retirement Communities, but primarily as a Retirement Living Advisor at Legacy Terrace. My next adventure in our company is as the Executive Director at Legacy Arbors, our memory care community. I am really looking forward to learning and leading at Legacy Arbors. They have a fantastic team focusing their caring hearts on people struggling with memory loss and their families.

Building Connections That Matter

Partnering with our Commercial Lending Team is more than just business—we build connections that matter.

Trust our team to provide a custom, solutions-based approach to support your efforts and help your business succeed.

westgate.bank | 402.434.3456

Who inspires you? - The people that live within Legacy Retirement Communities are who inspire me the most. I have been blessed to learn about their lives and the joys and struggles they have been through. They have taught me valuable life lessons. The lesson I appreciate most is that life is precious and a gift. No matter how old we are, we never stop seeking purpose and our dreams.

What is your greatest talent that you don’t utilize in your daily work life? - I am an artist, and in my free time, I love to create. I studied art in college at the University of Nebraska. I enjoy painting and drawing. I usually paint abstractly, and my subjects are usually of women and fashion. Lately, I have been intrigued by oil pastels and having fun with this messy medium. Gloves are a necessity! I try to treat each piece as a study, so I don’t take myself too seriously and enjoy the calmness of making art.

What is your favorite movie? - My favorite movie of all time is The ‘Burbs (1989). It is the silliest comedy movie about a neighborhood obsessed with their creepy neighbors who they know are up to no good. This movie is one I can watch over and over and never tire of it. Tom Hanks stars in it along with Carrie Fisher, Bruce Dern, Rick Docummun, and Corey Feldman; what a cast! One of the biggest reasons I love this movie is because every summer, I would visit my grandparents’ house in Alma, Nebraska, to swim, and my sister and I watched it every time we went there. The movie is a good reminder of this fun family tradition from my childhood.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - The best piece of advice I have ever received is that I can control how I perceive life. Each day, we get to wake up and be a part of something beautiful. Beauty can be in the ease of life and the hard things that challenge us. Life is short, and I want to enjoy as much of it as I can with the people that I love!

If our readers would like to contact you, how should they do so? - Please contact me at Legacy Arbors for support or guidance on memory loss. We are here to be a good resource to the community of Lincoln. Our phone number is (402) 466-3777. My email is Jocelyn. fitzgerald@legacyretirement.com, and our company website is legacyretirement.com.

STAR CITY SIX FERRY

Ferry Diaz PRAIRIE VIEW INDUSTRIES

Ferry Diaz, Business Development Manager at Prairie View Industries.

Tell us a little about your business. - Prairie View Industries (PVI) operates in Fairbury, Nebraska, where we manufacture aluminum mobility ramps, all-aluminum food service products, and durable stainless-steel equipment—all built to last. Our mission is simple: Make life easier and more accessible for everyone. Whether we’re helping someone navigate their home safely or keeping a busy kitchen running like clockwork, we’re here to solve real problems. What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally?

- Balancing growth while staying true to what matters most: relationships, trust, and delivering on our promises. What has been your most important achievement professionally?

- Turning handshakes into lasting partnerships. There’s nothing better than knowing our customers see PVI as a trusted partner they can rely on, project after project. Beyond PVI, I’ve served the Latino community, providing essential support during challenging moments with documentation and legal processes. Being a bridge between my community and services they need showed me the impact of showing up.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life?

- Becoming a dad has been the biggest turning point in my life. It opened my eyes to what truly matters — this little human I’m lucky enough to call my daughter. There’s nervousness about making the right decisions and guiding another human through this complicated world. But alongside that is profound purpose and optimism, I’ve learned that staying positive isn’t about denying difficulties; it’s choosing to believe we’ll figure it out together.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - You’ll find me outdoors whenever possible, helping my 2-year-old explore the world around us through nature walks and hikes or just watching her experience everything with fresh eyes.

If you had a theme song, what would it be? – “I Can” by NAS, my favorite lyricist from my hometown of Queens, NY. There’s a powerful lyric in this song that resonates dearly to me “Read more, learn more, change the globe.”

What local nonprofit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? - Habitat for Humanity speaks to my heart. Accessibility, dignity, and community support aren’t just buzzwords at PVI. These values are why we exist, so Habitat for Humanity’s mission feels like an extension of ours.

What is your favorite book or the last good book you read? - I’m reading two books that hit hard in different ways. To Shake the Sleeping Self by Jedidiah Jenkins follows a guy biking from Oregon to Patagonia to shake himself awake before life passes him by. The second is Relentless by Tim S. Grover, and it’s all about unstoppable drive and refusing to settle. One pushes you to find yourself, the other to become unstoppable.

What is your favorite local Lincoln restaurant? It’s a tie between Banhwich and Neveria La Monarca.

If you could have dinner with one famous person from the past or present, who would it be? – I would have dinner with Roberto Clemente. He believed that those who can help have a responsibility to do so through dedicated humanitarian work. He reminds me that our legacy isn’t accomplishments, but our positive impact on others. If our readers would like to contact you, how should they do so? – I’d love to hear from you at ferry@pviramps.com or (402) 729-4055! STAR CITY SIX LIBBIE

Libbie McGhee is the General Manager of McKinney’s Irish Pub in the Haymarket. Tell us a little about your business. - McKinney’s Irish Pub has continued to be my all time favorite place to go to ever since I moved here three years ago. It stood out to me just like to everyone else by being covered head to toe in memories drawn on dollar bills by just about anyone who has visited. You get to leave your mark forever and you get to create memories with the people you love that you’ll never forget. Not only do we have an incredible vibe but we pride ourselves in our amazing food and drinks but nowhere is fun without all three. Fortunately we provide a level of service you can’t get anywhere else, we treat our staff and our customers just like family. How did you get started in the business? - I moved here three years ago all the way from Florida and people continue to ask me the jarring question of “why Nebraska?” Every time I answer I somehow also wonder the same thing. As someone who has lived in four different states now, for some reason Nebraska is the place I chose to be. There are a million reasons why I decided to stay but a very big one is my success here, I kept finding myself in bigger opportunities to rise. I found my work ethic here and I have continued to see myself grow as a person. It took me a long time to find a place and career I was passionate about. I started working at some other places to gain good experience but I always wanted to be a part of McKinney’s. There was an opening and I saw my opportunity and took it, I worked my way to be an incredibly reliable employee. After a year of working extremely hard and showing the owners just how much I cared about this business I was able to become the Bar Manager. In two years time I was able to show them even more and was promoted to General Manager. Getting into this career path was definitely the best decision I could’ve made for myself and I am extremely proud to be a part of McKinney’s Irish Pub. What local nonprofit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any reasons why? - Every year McKinney’s partners with Clinic with a Heart to gather donations for this extremely important organization. The last two years I was able to be a part of our Golf Tournament that brings tons of people together that can give donations and learn more about the community. I was able to meet Dr. Rhodes and hearing him be so passionate about what he started was beautiful. Having free healthcare for people who are uninsured and underinsured brings a huge impact to our community. There is nothing I wish more for than free healthcare for everyone around the world. There are too many people that are unfortunately affected by the lack of care our government has for low income families and people. Being able to contribute to this organization has meant so much to me knowing that they can continue to provide to our community.

If you could have dinner with one famous person from the past or present, who would it be? - I would choose Miley Cyrus every single time. When I was 10 years old, I saw Miley Cyrus at a concert in VIP for my birthday. It was not only a core memory but the most amazing moment of my life. She is and will always be an icon and an inspiration to everyone. Growing up I watched Hannah Montana religiously and I always wanted to be just like her, throw a wig on and be a completely different person who had these insane vocals. It’s incredible to see where she has started and now who she is, she is amazing.

If our readers would like to contact you, how should they do so? - You can contact me at (402) 477-0021 or visit McKinney’s Pub at 151 N 8th St.

Vivian Clough is an Annuities Agent at Vivian Clough Agency – Nebraska’s 1st Exclusive AAA Agency

Tell us a little about your business.- Vivian Clough Agency is proud to be Nebraska’s first and only independently owned AAA agency offering Insurance, Travel, Financial, and Membership services under one roof. We help families protect what matters most and enjoy more of life’s adventures—whether that’s peace of mind through the right insurance, expert help planning a dream vacation, or guidance on building longterm financial stability. Our mission goes beyond policies—it’s about connection, care, and community.

How did you get started in the business?- I’ve always had a passion for helping people and building relationships. After years in leadership, insurance, human resources, I realized I wanted to create something that made a difference in people’s lives. The opportunity to open an AAA agency felt like destiny—an opportunity to merge my business experience, heart for service and love for community into something truly meaningful. What has been your most important professional achievement?Becoming the first exclusive AAA agency owner in Nebraska is a milestone that represents perseverance and purpose. It wasn’t an easy path—there were long nights, challenges and countless moments of faith. To me, this achievement isn’t just personal success; it’s about breaking barriers and opening doors for other women, mothers and minority entrepreneurs who dream of building something of their own.

Tell us a little about your family.- My husband Jacob and our son Anthony are my greatest blessings. They’ve been my motivation and my “why” from the very beginning. As a family, we love exploring, trying restaurants, cheering for sports, and spending time with our pets—Ninja, Regal and Teddy. They keep life grounded and joyful, no matter how busy things get.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life?- The moment I decided to stop waiting for “someday” and start building my dream. Opening my own agency was both terrifying and exhilarating, but it taught me that courage isn’t the absence of fear—it’s moving forward with faith anyway.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off?- I love spending the day with my family, visiting local small businesses, and connecting with other entrepreneurs. Supporting local is something I’m passionate about—it keeps our community strong and thriving. You’ll often find me at Lincoln Chamber events, referral networks, or just chatting with fellow business owners about ways we can collaborate and grow together.

Who inspires you?- I’m inspired by my parents, who came from humble beginnings and taught me resilience, generosity, and faith. I’m also inspired by every small business owner who turns their dream into reality despite the odds. Watching others rise fuels me to keep paving the way for those coming next.

What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?- “Faith doesn’t make things easy—it makes them possible.” This quote is my compass. It reminds me to trust the process, lean on faith, and keep going even when the path isn’t clear.

If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be?- Empowering. I want to be remembered as someone who helped others believe in themselves, take risks, and turn their vision into something real.

What local nonprofit organization are you passionate about?- I’m passionate about groups that serve families, women, children and rescued animals. I believe when you lift others, the entire community rises with you.

If readers would like to contact you, how should they do so?- Visit Vivian Clough Agency – AAA at 8901 Andermatt Dr, Ste 104, Lincoln, NE 68526, call (402) 500-3377, or email vclough@acg.aaa.com. ITSJUSTUS PAINTING

Tell us a little about your business. - ItsJustUs specializes in drywall, deck staining, painting, wall repair, ceiling repair, and wallpaper removal. ItsJustUs also works on kitchen cabinets, refinished wood floors, epoxy floors, painting and staining doors/trim, painting garage doors, walls, ceilings trim doors, commercial interior painting and exterior painting.

How did you get started in the business? - There were many things that led me to starting ItsJustUs Painting. After I had gotten out of prison, I needed a good job that would support my kids and family. One thing I’d often remind myself of was that “it’s just me and god.” And from that, a good name for the business was born. Now, when my wife, Chrissy, and I walk into projects, it’s just her and I.

Tell us a little about your family. - I married my wife after I got out of prison and I have two kids with her. I also have older kids, with my oldest son being 18 and our youngest, Daniel, who is 1 year old.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life?

- Starting ItsJustUs Painting. I graduated college with an Associate’s Degree and ran a gym for a while. Before ItsJustUs, I did a lot of landscaping for friends and family and decided a painting and drywall business was right up my alley, and I already had people wanting my services.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - I don’t really have days off. I am always painting and doing drywall.

What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - “Never back down.” I have a tattoo of this on my arm and for me it means to keep going and knocking on doors. There are millions of doors in this world, people like to say no, but sometimes you only need one yes .

If you had a theme song, what would it be? - “The Heat Is On” by Glenn Frey. This is the Omaha Lancer hockey team’s theme and goal song. When I was a kid, my mom and I would go to their home games.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? - I would have three of me. I would be able to paint so much quicker!

If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? - Nothing. I love what I do. I’ve had a few different career paths throughout my life. Personal trainer, chef, and landscaper.

What is your favorite TV show? - It would have to be Knight Rider. It was my dad’s favorite and a great show in general. I mean, how could a kid not love a supercar?

What is your favorite local Lincoln restaurant? - By far it’s Zipline Tap & Grill. The food and the beer make this place great but what really gives it 5 stars for me is the environment and customer service. I get asked by staff members why I keep coming back. The answer is always them. Don’t get me wrong, the beer and burgers are a huge reason, too.

If our readers would like to contact you, how should they do so? - You can email me at itsjustusllc@outlook.com, call me at (402) 418-1621, or visit itsjustusllc.com.

Heroes Honor Ride Returns to Sturgis to Celebrate America’s Heroes

The open road will once again roar with purpose as Heroes Honor Ride, a nonprofit motorcycle event honoring America’s heroes, returns to Sturgis next August. The ride unites veterans, first responders and patriotic riders from across the country to celebrate courage, sacrifice and service.

Founded to “honor your American hero,” Heroes Honor Ride gives participants the chance to dedicate their ride to a specific hero; whether a veteran, police officer, firefighter, EMT or loved one who embodies service and selflessness.

“Every mile we ride is a tribute to someone who’s made a difference,” said Brian Thamm, Vice President of Heroes Honor Ride. “This event is about uniting people through respect, gratitude and the shared belief that heroes deserve to be remembered and honored.”

The police escorted ride begins in Belle Fourche, South Dakota, and concludes at the legendary Buffalo Chip, where participants are greeted with live entertainment, recognition ceremonies and opportunities to connect with veteran and first responder support organizations.

As a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Heroes Honor Ride donates proceeds to programs supporting mental health, recovery and community initiatives for first responders and veterans.

Registration is now open at heroeshonorride.org. Riders and sponsors are encouraged to register early, as space is limited for this year’s event.

Goodwill to Renovate Downtown Lincoln Location, Expand Job Connection Center

Goodwill Industries Serving Southeast Nebraska, Inc. announced plans to renovate its downtown Lincoln location. This project involves expanding Job Connection, which currently occupies part of the location, and adding new partnerships and services to the remaining space.

Job Connection, which is fully funded by Goodwill’s thrift store revenue, helps individuals overcome traditional employment barriers and find work in the community. Goodwill’s Employment Specialists provide free, personalized assistance with services like resume creation, online applications and computer skills development.

Use of Goodwill’s employment services has rapidly grown; the agency nearly quadrupled its Job Connection client base from 2023 to 2024. The downtown renovations will allow Goodwill to continue providing high-quality, personalized assistance to the increasing number of clients seeking its services.

“Our clients appreciate the personalized assistance they receive at Job Connection, and there are many days when every computer station is full,” said Aubry Hoegemeyer, Employment Services Director at Goodwill. “We are excited to be able to offer more opportunities and resources for Lincoln’s job seekers, and we will work to make sure the upcoming renovations happen with the least possible disruption to our clients.”

After expanding Job Connection, Goodwill will fill the location’s remaining space with other “connections,” to be announced at a later date.

HeartlandCancerFoundationParticipatesin Giving Tuesday to Support Cancer Patients

This holiday season, you don’t have to attend an in-person event or fundraiser to make a meaningful difference for cancer patients in need.

On Tuesday, December 2, the Heartland Cancer Foundation (HCF) will be participating in Giving Tuesday, a unique virtual opportunity to show support by making a gift of any size to help neighbors who are struggling with transportation and housing costs during their cancer treatment.

Everyday bills like utilities and fuel should never be barriers for those facing cancer, yet many in our community struggle to afford them alongside mounting medical expenses. Your donation can ease these burdens; ensuring patients get the care they need without the added stress of financial worries.

Small contributions make more of a difference than you might think. For example, just $25 covers a roundtrip ride to a critical treatment session.

By participating in Giving Tuesday, you directly support HCF’s mission of providing practical and immediate financial assistance to eligible cancer patients in our community who need extra support. Whether its $25 or $100, every donation helps remove the barriers to care, so patients can focus on healing.

Visit heartlandcancerfoundation.org on or near December 2 to contribute. Together, we can support those bravely battling both cancer and financial hardship. Your compassionate contribution could be the spark of hope they desperately need.

Voicesof HopeEncouragestheCommunityto Adopt a Family This Holiday Season

This holiday season, Voices of Hope is inviting caring volunteers to make a difference by adopting a family. The Adopt a Family program gives individuals, groups, and organizations the opportunity to bring joy, warmth, and support to survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking.

During the holidays, many families served by Voices of Hope face challenges that can make the season difficult. By adopting a family, community members can help make the holidays brighter and more meaningful for those who have experienced trauma. Participants can provide gifts, household items, or other essentials that help families feel cared for and supported during a time that can often be stressful and isolating. The program not only helps meet immediate needs, but also reminds survivors that their community cares and that hope and healing are possible. Every act of kindness, no matter the size, helps strengthen the network of support for those who need it most.

Adopt a Resident: Bringing Holiday Cheer to Fresh Start

The holiday season is often described as the most wonderful time of the year, but for many women working to rebuild their lives, it can also be a time of deep challenge. At Fresh Start, they believe every woman deserves to feel the warmth, joy and hope of the holidays, and that’s why they’re kicking off the annual Adopt a Resident program.

Each woman living at Fresh Start has thoughtfully created a Christmas Wish List with five items that would make her season brighter. Every gift is priced at $25 or less, making it easy for community members to take part. The items may be simple, like cozy slippers, a warm blanket or a favorite book, but the impact is powerful. These gifts remind their residents that they are not alone and that their community cares about their journey.

When you choose to adopt a resident, you’re doing more than checking items off a list. You’re offering encouragement, kindness and the priceless gift of dignity. Your support helps transform the holiday season into a time of celebration and belonging, even for women who may be far from family or experiencing the holidays in a new way.

Fresh Start is seeking individuals, families, and businesses to help fulfill these heartfelt wishes. Together, we can ensure that every woman in the program experiences the joy of the season. To learn how you can get involved, please email LaCresha Brooks at Lacreshab@ freshstarthome.org or call (402) 475-7777.

Red Cross: Take Steps Now to Support a Strong Blood Supply

The American Red Cross asks donors to make an appointment now to give blood or platelets to support patients counting on a consistent blood supply to survive and heal. While emergencies often grab headlines, the need for blood is constant. Especially in October, as donation appointments can often drop quickly when people settle into busy fall routines and make plans around upcoming school breaks.

Because blood has a short shelf life and can only come from volunteer blood donors, any disruptions in the ability to collect lifesaving blood can have serious consequences for those seeking medical care.

Help patients this fall and make an appointment to give blood or platelets by visiting RedCrossBlood.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS or by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App. Those who give Oct. 20-Nov. 16, will receive a $10 e-gift card to a merchant of choice, plus be automatically entered for a chance to win one of three $5,000 gift cards.

In addition to providing lifesaving blood products, the Red Cross mobilizes relief to families affected by disasters, trains people in lifesaving skills and provides services to active and veteran U.S. military personnel and their families. Donors can feel good knowing that by supporting the Red Cross, they can help family and friends in their communities and across the country.

See RedCrossBlood.org/Harvest for details.

Intern Foundry Empowers Innovative Resilience through “Brain Gain”

Intern Foundry (IF) is driving meaningful change across Nebraska by addressing the state’s “brain drain” and connecting high-achieving students with work-based learning opportunities that strengthen local communities. The IF program is an intentionally designed partnership between the Foundry and Nebraska Universities’ Honors Programs to combat the outflow of educated talent in the state. According to the Askarben Foundation, as of 2024, Nebraska’s net migration of people 25 years and older with a bachelor’s degree or more was 4,610, ranking the state third highest in the U.S. for brain drain.

IF works to mitigate this challenge by pairing top university students with essential, meaningful work opportunities. By connecting highachieving talent with local organizations in need of capacity, the program creates a strong pipeline of future talent and ensures critical projects across Nebraska are completed with quality and purpose.

The program has already had a noticeable impact on Nebraska’s nonprofit and community sectors. “The Foundry Internship Program has been an incredible asset to Nebraskans for the Arts and has made a real difference in advancing our mission of arts advocacy. As a small statewide nonprofit, we rely on strong partnerships and innovative programs like IF to expand our capacity and reach.

They create programs, services, events, and partnerships to enhance local social impact and boost small organizations in fulfilling their missions most effectively. The comprehensive support includes:

• Interns for nonprofits, private sector, and purpose focused businesses in collaboration with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Honors program

• Grant writing, marketing, and data support services for nonprofits through Base Camp Foundry in partnership with AmeriCorps VISTA through ServeNebraska

• Incubation and training for young and emerging nonprofits through Spark Works

• Coworking and meeting spaces at the downtown Lincoln headquarters

Matt Talbot Kitchen & Outreach is hosting Cookies, Claus & Community in partnership with Thrivent on Tuesday, December 2, at Sheridan Lutheran Church from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.. Activities include visiting with Santa, decorating cookies, enjoying hot cocoa and assembling care kits for individuals experiencing homelessness.

HopeSpoke seeks community help to provide warm winter gear for teenage boys who are receiving residential mental and behavioral health treatment at HopeSpoke’s Therapeutic Group Home. Donations to the Warm Coats campaign will allow each boy to select a new coat, boots, hat and gloves for the coming winter, and will help to purchase new clothing for youth in need all year long.

“The kids who come to us don’t have coats, and some have never had a new coat,” said Pat Sailors, HopeSpoke’s Director of Crisis and Residential Services. “It’s hard to describe the way a kid’s face lights up when they get to pick out a new coat that’s all theirs.” HopeSpoke’s Therapeutic Group Home provides a holistic, trauma-informed, strengthbased approach to mental and behavioral health treatment for boys ages 13-18.

To support the Warm Coats campaign, make a gift online at hopespoke. org/donate; mail donations to HopeSpoke at 2444 O Street, Lincoln, NE 68510; or contact at give@hopespoke.org.

A freewill donation of $25 is suggested, but any amount is appreciated. On December 2, Thrivent will boost donations by matching $1 for every $2 raised. Plus, Thrivent is covering all online processing fees, so 100% of each gift will go directly to Matt Talbot.

“Everyone is welcome to join us for this fun GivingTuesday event,” said Alynn Sampson, Executive Director. “It is a great opportunity to celebrate the season, spread kindness and make memories—all while supporting hunger and homeless prevention services Lincoln.” Matt Talbot’s mission is to relieve hunger, overcome homelessness, address addiction and provide outreach and advocacy in Lincoln. Learn more at mtko.org.

Giving Tuesday was started in 2012 to encourage people to do good. Over the last 13 years, this idea has grown into a global movement that inspires millions of people to donate, volunteer and spread awareness about causes that matter in their local communities.

AssurityLifeInsuranceCompanyWrapsOver 11,000 Diapers for Nebraska Families

Nebraska Diaper Bank proudly celebrates Assurity Life Insurance Company for wrapping 11,340 diapers and donating 848 more, helping keep 189 babies across Nebraska clean, healthy, and dry. NDB has a high need for size 5 and 6 diapers and Assurity gave those sizes to help diaper babies in Nebraska.

The American Heart Association Launches Campaign to Champion Heart and Brain Health

Diapers are a basic need, yet 1 in 3 families in Nebraska struggle to afford enough. Each month, Nebraska Diaper Bank distributes over 300,000 diapers to 5,000 children statewide through collaborative partnerships that ease financial stress for families.

“We’re so thankful to Assurity for giving their time and heart to support local families,” said Anna Lehotyak, Development Director at Nebraska Diaper Bank. “When companies come together to volunteer, it truly strengthens our communities.”

Nebraska Diaper Bank invites local businesses, civic groups, and community members to volunteer or donate. Just an hour or two can make a lasting difference for hundreds of babies in Nebraska. To schedule a group wrap or learn more about volunteering, visit nebraskadiaperbank.org/volunteer.

The American Heart Association (AHA) has officially launched the 2026 Heart of Lincoln campaign, uniting community leaders to advance heart and brain health across Nebraska. Campaign chairs Kim and Jamie Tallman and Dr. Isaac and Theresa Meier, along with Honorary Executive Leader Dr. Jeffrey P. Gold and a dedicated team of volunteers, are working to build awareness and inspire support for this life-saving mission.

Since 1924, the AHA has been a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives; driving innovations such as the first implantable pacemakers, artificial heart valves, CPR techniques, and cholesterol-lowering medications. Today, that mission continues in Nebraska through investments in research, education, and rural health initiatives.

In recent years, the AHA has invested over $6.5 million to improve stroke care systems statewide, funded 28 research studies across major universities, trained more than 68,000 Nebraskans in CPR, and established Blood Pressure Hubs in rural communities. Local engagement also includes partnerships with Nebraska Athletics, community organizations, and schools to promote heart-healthy lifestyles and CPR education.

The Heart of Lincoln campaign invites the community to join in supporting continued progress against heart disease and stroke. To make a donation or learn more, visit heart.org/lincolnheartball or call (402) 875-7377.

Visionary Youth Calls on the Community to Lift Up Families in Need This Holiday Season

Since 2012, Visionary Youth has been a beacon of hope for youth and families facing financial challenges as they navigate some of the most challenging times of the year, including the holiday seasons. For many of our neighbors, the holidays can be an especially difficult time as parents look for ways to create meaningful celebrations for their children while managing the demands of everyday essential needs.

Now in its sixth year, the Community Holiday Food Giveaway helps ease this burden by serving more than 1,200 families with a turkey, a full Thanksgiving meal package and essential winter clothing, including socks, underwear, hats and gloves. More than just providing food, this event allows families to share in the cherished tradition of preparing and enjoying a holiday meal together, focusing on warmth, connection and hope.

As costs and demand rise, Visionary Youth is calling on the community to help make this effort possible. The Community Holiday Food Giveaway is coming up on November 23.

There are several ways you can make an impact:

• Financial Sponsorship: Every donation, big or small, helps Visionary Youth reach more families in need.

• Volunteer: It takes a village to make this event possible. Make a difference with your time and energy.

• Spread the Word: Let others know about this life-changing opportunity to give back.

Together, we can lift families beyond survival, strengthen community bonds and help youth thrive with the support they need. Learn more and get involved today at visionaryouth.org.

Advancing Impact with Summer Intern Foundry

The Foundry is advancing its impact through this summer’s STEM-focused 2026 Intern Foundry (IF) cohort, intentionally designed to connect high-achieving UNL Honors students with local organizations for high-impact projects in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Each summer, the Intern Foundry focuses its internship projects on an area of community need that reinforces Nebraska’s long-term vitality. Last summer’s cohort was themed around Health and Sustainability, empowering students to complete impactful projects across various sectors and scopes. Respected partners such as Black Hills Energy and Lincoln Electric System reported measurable value from their interns’ contributions and plan to return to the program.

This year’s STEM focus continues IF’s mission of supporting innovation and problem-solving in industries that drive Nebraska’s economic and technological future. By connecting bright, passionate students with organizations, IF helps build the talent pipeline Nebraska needs to remain resilient. Participating organizations will not only gain talented capacity, but also contribute to something bigger. They will be directly investing in Nebraska’s talent retention and collective resilience. Nebraska’s future is full of potential, and we’d love for you to be a part of it. Organizations interested in hosting a Summer 2026 intern should connect with Haley (Summer IF Coordinator) at haley@ thefoundry.co before November 26th. Together, we can build strength and resiliency in our state that lasts for generations.

This year’s parade carries special significance as it commemorates 250 Years Defending Freedom by celebrating the birthdays of the U.S. Army, Navy, and Marine Corps—our nation’s founding branches that secured American independence and continue to safeguard its freedom today. Free and family friendly, the parade will feature local veteran service organizations, military units, youth groups, community businesses, classic cars, and marching bands, all joining to pay tribute to those who have served.

The parade route will begin at South 21st and K Street, proceeding west to South 14th Street. Free street and lot parking will be available near the route. The opening ceremony at the Nebraska State Capitol Building and parade line-up will both start at 2 p.m. The event will also be broadcast live on LNKTV and YouTube for those unable to attend in person.

Now in its seventh year, the Lincoln Veterans Parade continues to unite the community in a shared spirit of gratitude, remembrance, and pride celebrating the men and women who have dedicated their lives to serving our nation.

From an inspiring kickoff luncheon featuring Sarah Collins of Collins Collective and a lively YP After Dark event with State Senator Jason Prokop, to a Table for 10 luncheon linking young professionals with members of the Lincoln Chamber Board, and a YPGives volunteer opportunity with Community Action Partnership, this year’s lineup once again showcased why Lincoln remains an incredible place for young professionals to build rewarding careers.

A standout moment of the week was the annual Young Lincoln Leader Awards, which celebrates outstanding young professionals who are making a meaningful impact in Lincoln. SavingHistoryinStyle:HamptonInnRevives Lincoln’s Gold’s Building

In the heart of downtown Lincoln, a beloved landmark is getting a second chance to shine.

The historic Gold’s Building, once a bustling center of commerce and a proud symbol of the city’s architectural heritage, is being thoughtfully transformed into a modern Hampton Inn.

Rather than letting time and neglect erase its legacy, a dedicated team of developers, designers, and local leaders has come together to preserve its past while preparing it for the future. This is more than a hotel renovation—it’s a revival of Lincoln’s history, reimagined with style, purpose, and community spirit.

Gold’s Building History

Historical buildings are more than giant structures; they are the foundation of a city’s identity. Their architectural details give character that modern construction struggles to replicate. In Lincoln, as in many other cities, these buildings stand as testaments to a rich history.

When left vacant, they become missed opportunities, fading instead of flourishing. Keeping these buildings alive ensures they continue to be key contributors to the culture, economy, and legacy.

The Gold’s building is one of Lincoln’s proudest structures—a building with immense character and tradition. Constructed in 1924, with a blend of Gothic Revival and Art Deco styles, it made a striking addition to the city’s skyline. (The skyline also featured the Nebraska State Capitol, The Lincoln Hotel, and The First National Bank Building.) Since its erection until today, it has served as an iconic structure for Lincoln. In 1982, its significance was nationally recognized, and it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

William Gold, a New York native, opened “Gold & Company”, which quickly found success in Lincoln. The businessman constructed the Gold’s building to accommodate his expanding business. It became a staple and a centric piece of Lincoln.

Founded in 1967, the Downtown Lincoln Association provides services and champions initiatives for maintaining and enhancing our vibrant downtown. Our vision is to create an energetic downtown environment where we live, learn, work, invest and play. DLA has evolvedintoamulti-facetedorganization supporting a wide range of programs and activities including maintenance, economic development and advocacy. For a complete listing of downtown businesses, events and residences visit downtownlincoln.org.‘Like’usonFacebook atfacebook.com/downtownlincoln.

In 1964, the business merged with J.L. Brandeis and Sons, a department store chain based in Omaha. The Gold’s store changed names, but the building remained under Gold family ownership until 1981.

Starting in the 1980s, the building has been mainly used for housing, retail, and office space. Over the years, the building began to lose its former shine, with little significance in the community and a decaying interior.

In 2021, the building was sold, and the southern portion was demolished, leaving the community extremely concerned about the future of one of its most prominent landmarks.

In 2022, construction began on turning the iconic building into a vibrant new addition to downtown Lincoln—The Hampton Inn. General Manager Carrie Kubesa stepped in to bring this vision to life. With a background in hotel management, this was a dream job for her, overseeing the execution of ideas that would define the hotel.

Meanwhile, developer Mike Works of Rev Dev worked tirelessly to navigate the complex process of converting the building into a modern hotel while preserving its historical charm.

The Hampton Inn

The first-floor lobby will feature a spacious meeting space, designed to serve as a dynamic hub for guests. They plan on hosting local music artists to create a vibrant atmosphere for visitors and residents alike. Additionally, the lobby will feature a unique self-serve experience, allowing guests to pour their own beer, wine, and even cocktails.

On the exterior, the building now features large spotlights and a striking neon red sign that lights up the night. The Gold’s building now shines like never before.

The rooms offer a perfect blend of historic charm and modern comfort. With 14-foot ceilings, original brick walls, and some including original archways, guests will feel the difference between this Hampton Inn and any modern hotel. Modern amenities, like massive TVs and beds designed for ultimate comfort, will ensure that guests have all the conveniences they need.

One of the most striking differences between this Hampton Inn and newer construction is the superior quality of materials. The rooms are completely soundproof, which is incredibly rare nowadays. (During our interview, there was construction happening just a floor below; it was incredible that we couldn’t hear a thing.)

As part of the Gold’s Building’s exciting transformation, Rib & Chophouse, a premier steakhouse, will be joining the building on the first floor. Set to open this fall, the restaurant promises to boost the hotel’s ambiance while adding its own flair to the Gold’s building’s legacy.

The interior will feature 22-foot ceilings with original archways and intricate stained glass windows. Rib & Chophouse is poised to become a standout destination in downtown Lincoln.

As the Gold’s building is reborn into the Hampton Inn, it represents more than just a renovation. This change is a statement about the historic preservation of our city. While it would have been easier to tear it down and build a new hotel, this project reflects the community’s hard work and its respect for the city’s legacy and its historic structures. As this hotel opens its doors, it promises to be a place where guests can experience the past, present, and future of Lincoln.

If They Are the Backbone of Modern Business — Why Do So Many Implementations Go Sideways

In the last several decades, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems have become the nerve center of modern businesses. At their core, ERPs are business management platforms designed to integrate and automate core processes—from accounting and procurement to manufacturing, HR and project management—by centralizing all company data into one shared database, a single source of truth…

So why is it that so many studies show between 65% and 70% of ERP implementations are considered “failures.” Failing to deliver the efficiencies and benefits promised at the outset, run months or even years behind schedule, and cost 70% to 200% more than originally estimated.

The Technology That Made ERP’s Possible

None of this was possible until 1970, when Edgar F. Codd “invented” the relational database model. His paper, A Relational Model of Data for Large Shared Data Banks, laid the foundation for a new way to organize information—storing data in tables (“relations”) and manipulating it through formal logic.

Yet it took nearly a decade, 1979, before Oracle released their Relational Database Management System (RDMS) and 1983 when IBM was released in DB2. The first truly relational database ERP wasn’t until 1992 when SAP R/3 was introduced and became the first real-life proof that Codd’s work at IBM truly transformed how data could be stored and retrieved—replacing rigid hierarchies with simple, flexible tables, and how SQL would became the doorway to scalable integrated systems.

Major ERP Platforms

Since introducing the first relational database Oracle has dominated the ERP marketplace. Today, Oracle owns PeopleSoft, JE Edwards and NetSuite. SAP – which originated from a German startup is still a big player. Others have since come along like Sage Intacct and Salesforce – still others have been built for specific industries like Yardi (property management) and Acumatica (construction). Despite their differences, one principle applies to all: it’s not the platform that makes the difference; it’s the PROCESS and the PEOPLE. So – if ERPs are so star-spangled awesome... why do so many implementations fail?

You could think of ERP systems as too much of a good thing. They offer SO much flexibility that it can be overwhelming. Because they can be customized to fit nearly any imaginable workflow, organizations often fall into predictable traps.

1. Poor Design: Many of these failures originate from two equally poor design choices. Either new system is designed to do exactly what the inefficient legacy system did (e.g. National Grid below), or the design is over complicated by trying to do too much – or too much at one time (Hershey’s). A Systems Requirements Document (SRD) Design decisions made in isolation by one department frequently create data problems for others, many which aren’t discovered until the system goes live. A single SRD, developed collaboratively across departments, like accounting, HR, sales, procurement, supply chain, and executive leadership that includes priorities (e.g. what can we realistically get done in Phase I) will ensure the desired outcome upon rollout.

2. There will be Conflict: Every department can, and should, advocate for the best processes and data structure. But being human, there will be conflicts, especially in the SRD and Design phases. A strong project manager with centralized authority to resolve these cross-functional conflicts quickly is critical to success.

3. Inadequate Testing: Comprehensive, end-to-end testing— with predefined scripts and expected outcomes—is vital. Many organizations skip or minimize this step, leading to rollout chaos when gaps or process failures present themselves.

4. Underestimating Training and Change Management: Employees need more than just instructions, they need context. Failing to explain why changes are happening undermines morale and compliance. Unhappy users can quickly become system saboteurs, and frequently find creative ways to “break” the new system.

5. Rushing the Rollout: When the go-live date becomes a finish line instead of a milestone, disaster often follows. Rolling out the system when it isn’t ready will disrupt operations and likely be very expensive to fix.

Data Quality: The Silent Killer

While listed last here, data quality should likely be the first consideration in any ERP project. No system can perform well with bad data.

“Dirty data” was the downfall of Target Canada’s SAP implementation, where inconsistent product dimensions and pricing data created widespread inventory chaos.

Rule of thumb: Clean your data—then clean it again.

The ERP Poster Child - National Grid

National Grid, a major gas and electric utility serving the Northeast, is practically the poster child of an ERP project gone wrong—an unfortunate combination of poor timing, inadequate testing, and excessive customization.

• Timing: Implementation coincided with Hurricane Sandy, leaving the company unable to efficiently manage emergency response operations.

• Testing: The SAP system was only tested under “ideal” scenarios. When real-world volumes hit, it quickly buckled under pressure.

• Design: The system was overly complex and heavily customized to replicate legacy workflows.

The fallout was staggering more than 850 additional contractors, a two-year recovery period, and $585 million in total costs—more than 1.5 times the original $384 million estimate.

Simple Keys to ERP Success

• Be realistic about timelines—and anticipate potential delays.

• Consider external dependencies and seasonal factors (e.g., Hershey’s 1999 rollout before Halloween and Christmas; National Grid during Hurricane Sandy).

• Define clear system requirements collaboratively.

• Involve the right people early and continuously.

• Clean, validate and test your data repeatedly (see Target Canada).

• Resolve cross-departmental conflicts quickly.

• Train employees thoroughly—and explain the “why.”

• Test processes until they break—then fix them.

• Roll out with confidence and burn the ships.

Successful ERP implementations require a similar commitment to the future state that Hernán Cortés had when arriving in Mexico in 1519: Burn the ships. Leave no doubt the new system is here to stay, so make it work.

END OF YEAR BUSINESS SPENDING

As 2025 draws to a close, many businesses, including yours, are starting to review their budgets and are starting to explore clever ways to invest before the year ends. Tactical spending in areas like safety, real estate, payroll, technology, and employee benefits can not only reduce tax liability but can also position companies for growth that lasts long term. To help businesses make the most of this critical time, we have asked experts right here in Lincoln to give their insight and top advice for end-of-year business strategies to drive success into 2026.

Finish the Year Strong: Optimize Your Business Systems with Alpha Zed Business Services

As the year winds down, business owners naturally shift into reflection mode. November is a particularly good time to evaluate what’s working and what needs attention. Making small improvements now can build confidence and give your business momentum heading into the new year.

One of the best ways to prepare for a strong start is by improving your internal systems, especially through automation and CRM tools. A good CRM not only stores client data but can automate key tasks, saving you time and money. For example, when a lead fills out a form, automation can send a scheduling link, notify the right team member, and follow up automatically if there’s no response. You can also automate appointment reminders, billing, onboarding forms, and even emails for birthdays or special promotions.

Many businesses still waste time on avoidable inefficiencies: backand-forth scheduling, repeated data entry, missing follow-ups, or duplicating work because of poor communication. Even something as simple as a missed contact form response can cost you business. These are all issues that better systems can solve.

That’s where Alpha Zed Business Services comes in. Their team helps businesses streamline operations through smart automation,

Kim Hazelton
Terry Clark Manager

CRM integration, and workflow optimization. Whether it’s setting up automated lead tracking, connecting your website forms to your sales pipeline, or consolidating multiple tools into one efficient system, Alpha Zed tailors solutions to fit your unique business goals. By improving how your systems communicate and function, you save time, reduce costs, and focus on what truly drives growth.

As the year ends, it’s also smart to look at how many tools and subscriptions you’re using. If you’re paying for multiple apps and entering the same information over and over, it may be time to consolidate. An all-in-one platform could reduce costs while increasing efficiency.

Finally, review your budget and tech spend. Are you paying for tools you don’t use? Could one system do the job of three? Cutting waste and improving systems now can lead to big savings and smoother operations in the year ahead, with Alpha Zed helping you every step of the way.

Strategic Real Estate Planning for 2026

As the year comes to a close, many business owners are evaluating expenses and setting goals for the new year. Real estate decisions, whether renewing a lease, expanding, or purchasing property, often play a key role in shaping those plans.

At Greenleaf Commercial Real Estate, we help businesses navigate every stage of their real estate journey, from site selection and space planning to cost analysis, lease negotiation, and tenant improvements. Our goal is to make each transition as efficient and beneficial as possible, setting our clients up for long-term success.

“Every business has its own story and strategy,” shared Halie Sutherland, Marketing Director and Sales Associate. “We take the time to understand your goals and challenges, then align the real estate process around what matters most to you. Whether it’s finding your first location or expanding to your next, we’re here to make that move confident and seamless.”

With deep local market knowledge and a client-first approach, Greenleaf Commercial Real Estate remains a trusted partner for businesses investing in their growth and future.

Smart Year-End Planning for Payroll, HR, and Compliance

As the year wraps up, it’s a smart time for businesses to review payroll and HR processes. This helps ensure tax payments and filings are up to date, especially if a third party is handling them. Just because something’s always been done a certain way doesn’t mean it’s still compliant. Rules change, and mistakes can lead to penalties and interest, which is why PayWorks is here to help! They have given some advice to help the end of your year run smoothly!

• It’s a great time to confirm that employee information is current before preparing W-2s. Something as simple as an outdated address can cause delays.

• Throughout the year, we often see employers let people start working before completing their new hire paperwork and that employee ends up quitting before they ever get their paperwork completed. It’s very difficult to get an employee to come back and finish once they’ve quit or been terminated.

cash flow can often be the biggest hurdle

&

Halie Sutherland
Terry Clark

• Another common issue is overlooking 1099 filings. If you’re required to send one and don’t, you may lose the ability to deduct that expense.

Proper year-end planning also helps with benefits. When you understand upcoming tax law changes and have accurate payroll data, you can make better decisions about employee benefits. Planning gives you more control and confidence. For businesses in Lincoln, changes from the “Big Beautiful Bill” have already begun to take effect along with the changes from the Nebraska Health Families and Workplaces Act that took effect October 1st. These updates will impact how payroll is handled. If you’re still managing your own payroll, it’s worth checking in with a tax advisor to make sure you’re compliant.

Taking time now to review your payroll and HR systems can prevent costly mistakes and help you start the new year with less stress and more clarity. Get a hold of PayWorks today!

“Re-Invest” in Your Business

As the year wraps up, it’s a great time to review where your business could benefit from reinvestment. Here are three key areas to consider:

• Upgrade Equipment (If You Need It)

Passage of the OBBB this year made increased depreciation deductions permanent, making this a good time to upgrade tech or equipment. However, you should only invest in this area if it’ll improve business operations – spending this money just for the tax write-off has significant negative implications. Use cash when possible to avoid interest costs that eat into future profits.

• Pay Down Debt & Pad Cash Reserves

Had a strong year? Use some of those profits to reduce business loans or credit lines. This lowers your interest burden, frees up cash for future growth, and reduces exposure to debt risk. Also consider moving cash you do not need immediately to a high-yield savings or certificate of deposit account. This will help secure the business during tough economic times.

• Invest in Your Team

Your people are your biggest asset. Consider performance-based raises, bonuses, and training. These boost morale, improve retention, and help identify areas for improvement heading into the new year.

Take Action Now:

Review your financials, meet with your CPA, and make a plan before year-end. Year-end tax planning with SP Group can help you prepare for the tax season(s) to come and identify improvement areas in the business. Effective planning will also help make sure your tax

obligations are taken care of ahead of time so you can focus on running your business. Strategic spending now can set your business up for a stronger, more profitable year ahead.

Cruise & Associates: Your Guide to Smarter Year-End Business Planning

Taxes are rarely anyone’s favorite activity, but as the year comes to a close, it’s the perfect time for business owners to start reviewing their financial situations with an accountant. The holiday season is busy for everyone; that’s where Cruise & Associates comes in. Their team ensures your financials are right where they need to be so you can stay at the top of your game heading into 2026. Take advantage

of their expert advice and plan.

As business tends to slow down this time of year, it’s also a great opportunity to invest in your people. Focus on training your staff to be their best. Having a strong, knowledgeable team is an investment that pays off for years to come. Encourage excellent customer service to build meaningful connections and keep clients coming back.

Next, evaluate your expenses. Identify which costs have increased, and determine what should stay and what can go. With prices rising across the board, trimming unnecessary expenses will strengthen your business’s financial health in the long run.

Finally, review your equipment. If anything needs updating, consider starting the new year with fresh, reliable tools, but only if those upgrades are necessary. Whenever possible, use cash for purchases rather than borrowing funds. New equipment can improve productivity and efficiency, fueling even more growth in the coming year.

Cruise & Associates practices what they preach, which is why they’ve earned a reputation as one of the most trusted and committed business spending advisors right here in the heart of Lincoln.

For the sake of your business, end-of-year spending planning is more than just a financial exercise. But it is an opportunity to strengthen systems, setting the stage for growth, and to support your employees. Whether it is improving technology, investing in training, improving workplace safety, or refining tax strategies, right here in Lincoln, businesses have a large amount of resources to help guide decisions. With the right partners and a forward-thinking approach, you can turn your end-of-year spending into a jumpstart for a successful new year.

For those with a passion for the game, The Back Nine offers PGA lessons, seasonal tournaments, and youth camps that keep the community swinging year-round. But even more than that, it’s a place

Memory Care

Memory Care in Lincoln

Supporting Residents and Families Every Step of the Way

Memory care is about more than safety and routine. It is about creating a life that still feels meaningful, joyful, and full of connection, even when memory loss changes the way a person experiences the world. While traditional senior living often focuses on providing assistance with daily tasks, memory care goes further. It addresses the unique cognitive, emotional, and physical needs of individuals with dementia, emphasizing engagement, stimulation, and dignity at every stage. Residents are encouraged to connect with familiar routines, participate in purposeful activities, and maintain as much independence as possible, all within a secure and supportive environment.

The importance of memory care communities cannot be overstated. These specialized facilities provide environments carefully designed to enhance quality of life. At Salt Creek Senior Living , the liveMORE program offers a holistic approach that engages residents physically, emotionally, intellectually, spiritually, and socially. Every activity, from exercise to culinary experiences, word games to live music, and therapy dog visits to baking sessions, is tailored to residents’ preferences and abilities. Staff is trained to develop meaningful relationships, gaining a deep understanding of behaviors and ensuring each person’s dignity and individuality are honored. Families are supported with guidance from nursing staff, lifestyle directors, and local resources such as the Alzheimer’s Association,

Joe Bohac

Compassionate Care

helping them navigate transitions and feel reassured that their loved ones are receiving attentive, compassionate care.

Similarly, Sumner Place provides a thoughtful, highly structured memory care environment within its 22-unit wing. Programming is designed to engage both mind and body, with word games, music therapy, baking, dog visits, and social events that encourage reminiscence and connection. The skilled life enrichment team emphasizes all domains of a resident’s life, adjusting activities according to each person’s stage in the dementia process. The community prioritizes the least restrictive interventions possible, fostering autonomy while maintaining safety. Passionate team members receive specialized training focused on how to interact with older adults with Alzheimer’s and dementia through the Buddies Forever Program to ensure success and quality of life to residents.

A critical component of memory care is ensuring proper medication management. Nebraska LTC Pharmacy provides personalized, concierge-level service that helps residents and families maintain accurate and consistent medication routines. Their specialized adherence packaging system organizes doses by day and time, significantly reducing confusion and minimizing the risk of errors. Pharmacists meet one-on-one with patients and caregivers to review medications, tailor plans to cognitive abilities, and ensure the therapy fits each person’s lifestyle. This personalized approach provides families with peace of mind, knowing that their loved ones’ medical needs are being carefully managed.

Home environments play a significant role in supporting memory care. Prairie View Industries (PVI Ramps) specializes in creating safe and accessible spaces for residents with mobility challenges. Ramps, thresholds, and gated solutions reduce trip and fall risks while allowing residents to move freely and maintain independence. These modifications also help families feel more confident in caring for loved ones at home, easing caregiver strain and promoting safer daily routines. For homes where wandering is a concern, ramps with safety gates provide controlled access points, preventing unsupervised exits while still supporting autonomy. PVI Ramps partners with mobility specialists and their storefront locations to conduct thorough home evaluations. This enables them to recommend trusted Prairie View Industries solutions— whether threshold ramps, modular systems, or gated ramps—that

maximize safety for families without limiting independence.

Senior Helpers , a leading expert in Alzheimer’s and dementia care, works with families to create customized home care plans that evolve as a loved one’s needs change. Their team provides the right level of individualized care while monitoring everything from medication to daily activities. Through their Senior Gems program, Senior Helpers emphasizes what residents can do rather than what they cannot, creating a positive, engaging environment that promotes independence, dignity, and well-being. Caring for a loved one with memory loss can take a significant toll on a caregiver’s physical and emotional health. To support families, Senior Helpers offers in-home respite care, giving caregivers the opportunity to rest, travel, or spend time with other family members while knowing their loved one is safe, engaged, and supported. Technology has come a long way in keeping loved ones with memory loss safe at home. In addition to in-home senior care, many families have started using technology such as mobile devices, Alexa, and smart watches to remind residents to take medications. Infant monitors, indoor cameras, and security systems are also utilized to help prevent wandering and provide reassurance that loved ones are safe.

Individualized attention and recognizing that those with memory loss have a lifetime of experiences and interests is the cornerstone of Legacy Arbors’ memory care approach. Caring for a person with memory loss requires compassion, patience and understanding of the disease process. The community offers activities from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., customized for each resident, with staff going above and beyond to create a welcoming and supportive environment. Residents enjoy a secured courtyard, a therapy dog named Benny, a bird aviary, and both group and one-on-one activities that stimulate mind, body, and spirit. Staff complete extensive training to deliver personalized wellness activities and social opportunities. Families are supported through conversations, guidance, educational materials, and caregiver support groups, helping ease the transition into memory care, reduce guilt, and provide confidence that their loved ones are receiving exceptional care.

Waterford Communities emphasizes safety, comfort, and emotional well-being. Residents are supported in a secure, 24-hour monitored environment with licensed care teams and RN supervision. The physical layout reduces hazards and confusion with clear signage, controlled access, and color-coded pathways, especially in memory care units to prevent unsafe wandering. and abilities, including cognitive games, reminiscence activities, music and art therapy, gentle exercise, and trained animal visits. Staff create individualized care plans that consider medical needs, preferences, and emotional health, while supporting independence and preserving dignity. Families are included in daily care and community activities, fostering confidence and reassurance. Waterford’s approach stands out for its focus on treating each resident as a whole person, and ensuring a resident’s daily environment is home-like rather than institutional, with family-style dining, secure outdoor spaces, and comfortable private apartments.

Legato Living is changing the way families experience memory care. Erin Render, CEO of Legato Living, leads this company that offers residential memory care in smaller, actual home settings, rather than large facilities. Each home is locally owned and operated, ensuring personalized attention and consistent care for every resident.

“Our goal is to provide memory care in an environment where residents feel safe and supported, and families feel confident that their loved ones are in good hands,” said Render. “We focus on both the needs of the residents and the peace of mind of their families.”

For families, this model provides relief and reassurance, knowing that trusted caregivers are communicating regularly and providing consistent support. In addition to delivering high-quality care, Legato Living is helping others bring this model to their communities through franchising. While the Omaha metro is sold out, there are ownership opportunities in the Lincoln, Kearney, North Platte and Scottsbluff markets. Each home emphasizes good staffing ratios, individualized attention, and a supportive, family-centered approach.

Caring for an aging loved one brings many challenges, and dementia can make daily moments more complex. Visiting Angels provides compassionate, personalized care that adapts to each person’s changing needs. Their services support both clients and their families through every stage of the journey, recognizing that dementia touches the whole household.

Natalie Leon
Erin Render

For seniors without cognitive decline, care often focuses on mobility assistance, medication reminders, meal preparation, and companionship. Dementia care, however, requires a different approach. Visiting Angels caregivers build structured, calming routines that reduce confusion and stress, practicing person-centered care that meets clients where they are. Gentle redirection replaces confrontation, and communication is tailored: caregivers speak slowly, clearly, and with patience to promote comfort and understanding.

Specialized training underpins the dementia program. Caregivers learn to respond to sundowning, agitation, and confusion with skill and empathy, addressing triggers such as fatigue, hunger, pain, or overstimulation early to prevent escalation. When confusion or wandering occurs, caregivers follow safety protocols while offering steady reassurance, guiding clients calmly and respectfully.

Families also receive direct support. Many caregivers face exhaustion or burnout while juggling work and home responsibilities. Visiting Angels provides respite care, education, and open communication so families feel confident, informed, and supported. By protecting caregiver wellbeing, their approach allows loved ones to remain safely at home, surrounded by familiarity and dignity.

life. These supports allow residents to maintain independence and engagement while reducing caregiver burden. Memory care communities carefully balance safety with the opportunity for meaningful experiences, enabling residents to thrive within a secure, structured environment.

Memory care also focuses on creating moments of joy and connection. Whether it is laughter during a baking session, a quiet walk in a secured courtyard, or the comfort of a familiar song, these daily experiences reinforce identity, promote emotional well-being, and enhance quality of life. In Lincoln, providers such as Salt Creek Senior Living, Sumner Place, Nebraska LTC Pharmacy, PVI Ramp, Legacy Arbors, Alicia Chrastil, Visiting Angels, Legato Living, Senior Helpers, and Waterford Communities demonstrate that life with dementia can still be full, engaging, and dignified. Families gain relief, guidance, and reassurance knowing their loved ones are cared for with respect, understanding, and compassion.

Supporting families through life transitions is equally important. Alicia Chrastil of Nebraska Real Estate Specialty Group of Nebraska Realty specializes in helping older adults and their families navigate moves, downsizing, and housing transitions. As a 55+ Home Coach, Alicia provides guidance, education, and resources to ensure seniors feel supported and confident. Her initiatives—including Nebraska Savvy Seniors, Empowerment Seminars, and the Downsizer’s Club—offer tools and encouragement to maintain independence and quality of life during these pivotal changes. Alicia’s work highlights the critical role of community professionals alongside memory care providers in helping families manage both practical and emotional challenges.

Memory care is not only about programs and facilities—it is also about supporting families and caregivers through the challenges that come with dementia. Emotional realities such as sundowning, personality changes, memory loss, and the physical and mental exhaustion of caregiving can take a significant toll. Families often struggle with guilt or uncertainty when transitioning a loved one into memory care. These communities provide resources, support, and education to help families feel confident in their decisions. Access to staff, individualized guidance, and local support networks ensures that caregivers do not have to navigate these challenges alone.

Specialized needs such as medication management, home accessibility, and rehabilitation are integral to the well-being of residents. Pharmacy services, mobility modifications, and therapy programs all contribute to safer, more fulfilling daily

Ultimately, memory care is a collaborative effort between residents, families, and professionals. It encompasses specialized programming, personalized care plans, emotional support, and practical services that together create an environment where individuals with dementia can live safely, meaningfully, and joyfully. The communities in Lincoln provide not only care for residents but also peace of mind for families, offering reassurance, support, and the tools needed to navigate the challenges of dementia with confidence and compassion.

Honor ALL WHO SERVED

Veterans Day

November 11, 2025

The willingness of America’s veterans to sacrifice for our country has earned them our lasting gratitude.

There are approximately 105,516 Veterans residing in Nebraska, making up about 7.2% of the state’s population. Across the state, local businesses are stepping up with special deals and community events to honor their service. From restaurants offering free meals and discounts to retailers hosting veteran appreciation sales, businesses are finding meaningful ways to recognize those who have served. Nebraska also has a growing number of Veteran-owned businesses who are giving back to their community this year through sponsoring events, volunteering or partnering with local organizations that support veterans and their families. These efforts not only celebrate Veterans but also strengthen the connection between local businesses and the communities they serve, highlighting the important role Veterans have both in professional and in everyday life across Nebraska.

As Veterans Day approaches, it’s a chance to honor the courage and sacrifice of those who served—both the ones who never came home and those who returned forever shaped by their experiences. At Strictly Business, we believe it’s important to celebrate not only the fallen but also the Veterans who continue to strengthen our communities as business owners, neighbors and leaders. We encourage our readers to show appreciation, support veteran-owned businesses and recognize the heroes among us. This Veterans Day, let’s make it a point to stand behind the local businesses that proudly support our veterans.

Join us in celebrating and supporting Veterans!

Veteran-owned businesses bring a powerful combo of discipline, leadership and integrity to the marketplace. Rooted in the values of service and accountability, these entrepreneurs lead with purpose and a motivated mindset that inspires confidence among clients, employees, and partners alike. Their military experience equips them with exceptional organizational skills, strategic thinking, and the ability to adapt quickly under pressure, qualities that translate directly into strong business performance and dependable service. Beyond operational excellence, veteran business owners embody a deep sense of commitment to community and country. They approach each challenge with resilience and resourcefulness, turning obstacles into opportunities.

Consumers are also drawn to the authenticity and reliability that come with the veteran-owned title, often showing strong brand loyalty to companies that reflect those ideals. Additionally, many veteran entrepreneurs use their platforms to mentor others, foster teamwork, and build inclusive workplaces that value dedication and respect. With access to specialized certifications such as the Veteran-Owned Small Business (VOSB) and Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) programs, these businesses can also compete for government contracts and growth opportunities that strengthen local economies. In every industry, veteran-owned companies stand as a testament to the lasting impact of service… leading with honor, operating with excellence, and continuing to make a difference long after their time in uniform.
