A Paige From My Notebook...

October has always been one of my favorite months of the year. There’s a crispness in the air, harvest is underway, and communities across Nebraska seem to come alive with gatherings, celebrations, and events. This fall, more than ever, I sense a renewed hunger for something that the digital world can’t replicate—real, in-person connection. People want to meet in the third dimension again. They want to shake hands, laugh together, and look each other in the eye.

Over the past decade, technology has reshaped the way we interact. At first, it was exhilarating—emails, social media, and video calls gave us the ability to connect across distances at the click of a button. But lately, I hear more and more voices questioning whether the internet is losing its magic. Between fake accounts, bots, algorithms, and now the rise of AI, the online world often feels less authentic. The question many business owners quietly ask is: is the internet dead for meaningful connections?

online, and the undeniable impact of in-person networking. When I attend ribbon cuttings, chamber events, or nonprofit fundraisers, I’m reminded that the energy in the room simply can’t be duplicated by a screen. There’s a pulse to it. You hear the applause, you feel the buzz, you exchange knowing glances that say “we’re in this together.” That third dimension—where human beings truly meet—matters more today than it ever has.

"The question many business owners quietly ask is: is the internet dead for meaningful connections?"

This issue of Strictly Business is filled with examples of leaders who are leaning into that truth. They are hosting events, creating spaces for people to gather, and building companies that understand the value of personal connection. It’s inspiring to watch, and it’s proof that no matter how far technology advances, human beings will always crave community.

I don’t believe it’s dead—but it is changing. Digital tools will continue to be part of how we market, network, and share ideas. But what makes the difference—the spark that builds trust and creates long-term relationships—still happens faceto-face. That’s why Strictly Business remains committed to being a platform that combines the best of both worlds: the depth and credibility of print, the reach and convenience of

So, as you flip through these pages, I encourage you to think about the ways your business can bring people together this fall. Maybe it’s hosting a customer appreciation event, sponsoring a nonprofit banquet, or simply inviting a client to coffee instead of sending another email. Those moments add up, and they create the kind of relationships that no algorithm can manufacture.

The internet may be crowded with noise, but here in Lincoln and Omaha, we know how to cut through it—with authenticity, kindness, and a handshake in the third dimension.

Here’s to a season of real connections and lasting impact.

Capital Cigar Lounge isn’t your grandfather’s smoky cigar den, it’s where modern connection meets timeless tradition. Built on the idea that great things happen when people come together, the lounge was created as a space where real conversations thrive, ideas flow freely, and meaningful relationships are formed. Co-founders Tony Goins and Austin Hillis envisioned more than just a cigar bar. With the unconditional support from Kimberly (Tony’s wife) and Natalie (Austin’s wife), Capital Cigar Lounge has grown in business and spread to the community with the help of Tony and Austin’s over the years.

They’ve built a community hub where people from all walks of life alike can unplug, relax, and enjoy authentic face-to-face moments in a refined, comfortable setting with young and old patrons, sharing stories, knowledge and learning over a shared cigar.

Step away from the screens, the hustle of the everyday and step into a lounge filled with not just cigars, but signature cocktails, a wide selection fine wines and carefully crafted beers.

Featuring a curated selection of 15,000 cigars, Capital Cigar Lounge brings world-class quality to Lincoln with a local, hospitable environment. It’s a place where conversations matter, connections are made, and every visit feels like a much-needed pause from the daily grind.

With its upscale design, fresh air ventilation, and warm Midwest hospitality, Capital Cigar offers the perfect blend of luxury and approachability. Whether you’re catching up with a friend over a premium cigar, joining a networking event, or just taking a break from the digital noise, the lounge invites everyone to feel welcome. The main Crux Cigar lounge is open to the public, while an exclusive members-only Casdagli Cigar offers added perks for those seeking a more private experience. Membership includes phone app entry making the lounge available 20 hours a day, access to an on-site cigar locker, unlimited access to their conference room (which is also available to anyone by the hour) so your business can enjoy the lounge while making puffs toward success.

What truly matters at the Capital Cigar Lounge are the relationships made. Between staff and customers or simply between patrons, connections are made every day. You can enjoy this lounge without partaking in the cigars as there is so much more to offer. And, don’t worry about the smoke, they have a complex air filtration system so smoke doesn’t linger; these systems pump fresh air back into the lounge.

Let Capital Cigar Lounge overcome your perceptions. There is no hazy atmosphere you need to squint through and your grandfather isn’t chain smoking in the corner.

Congressman Flood Secures Over $1 Million for Constituents Through Federal Casework

U.S. Congressman Mike Flood announced that his office has recovered more than $1 million in federal casework for constituents in Nebraska’s First Congressional District this year. The total reflects funds returned and benefits secured through direct assistance with federal agencies.

“Through the month of July, I’m pleased to share that my team and I have returned $1 million and counting to constituents across our First District,” Flood said. “We’ve also resolved over 140 cases, with a 98% satisfaction rate regarding our office’s responsiveness.”

The Congressman’s office has supported residents in a wide range of situations, including:

• Social Security benefits: A widow from Sarpy County received her late husband’s final check after months of delays, following outreach from Flood’s office.

• Passports: A Platte County mother secured her child’s passport in time for international travel after conflicting information caused delays.

• Veterans benefits: A Platte County veteran successfully appealed health insurance penalties after Flood’s office obtained confirmation of his long-standing enrollment with the VA.

Flood encouraged Nebraskans to contact his Lincoln district office or attend mobile office hours for assistance. “If you have an issue that needs to be addressed, I encourage you to reach out,” he said.

Careful! R.U. Nut’s Spicy Mango Is Not For the Faint of Heart

After months of development and taste-testing, the R.U. Nuts Co. snack team has created a new trail mix snack recipe: Spicy Mango Mix. Starting with just the right amount of hot and spicy dried wasabi peas, the mix balances the heat with authentic sweet mango dices. Spicy Mango Mix is sure to set the market on fire, and set tongues on fire as well.

Founded in a family kitchen in 1983, the R.U. Nuts Co. is a homegrown, Nebraska-based manufacturer and distributor of food, beverage, and coffee products.

In the past, R.U. Nuts has launched a line of classic, nutty trail mixes. These include Wild About Peanuts Mix (a perennial classic), Tailgate Mix (a top-selling sweet-and-savory blend perfect for sports parties and movie nights), and Working for Peanuts Mix (for fans of peanut butter candy and chocolate).

Now you can add an extra kick to the party with Spicy Mango Mix. But beware: the kick from the wasabi hits like a linebacker fired out of a canon. This snack is not for those who can’t handle a spicy kick.

Spicy Mango Mix is already hitting the shelves of many fine grocery stores in Nebraska and across the broader Midwest region. Look for it at Super Saver and Russ’s Market, or order online at runustco.com.

Leadership Lincoln Launches 41st Year of Programs

Leadership Lincoln’s 41st year is off and rolling. Each year, the organization hosts three groups of Lincoln residents for a series of events, fellowships and exploratory sessions designed to help participants plug into Lincoln and Lancaster County.

High school juniors from every school in Lancaster County are nominated by principals and counselors to take part in a retreat and monthly meetings. Their retreat was held in late August, and throughout the year they will learn about their hometown, what makes it work and how they can grow into the leaders of tomorrow.

Young professionals, nominated by their organizations and businesses, began their year of Leadership Lincoln in early September with a get-acquainted dinner. Held September 2 at the rooftop meeting space at Olsson Engineering in downtown Lincoln, the event welcomed members of the Flagship Class as Executive Director Mike Hale outlined the programs they will participate in. Over the coming months, the class will focus on government at the city, county and state levels, community health, education, and the arts and cultural scene. A third group brings together new executives to the community and individuals recently promoted into leadership roles. Meeting monthly, they will also explore topics including human services and public safety.

“As I’ve reflected on what we’ve done to help the city, I’m amazed and very pleased with a long list of accomplishments,” Hale said. “We give people the opportunity to connect outside their day-today routine, gain a deeper understanding of what makes this city tick and meet leaders of Lincoln’s businesses, nonprofits, government and more.”

Thok Nath Literacy And Press Taking Charge Of Language Barriers

Thok Nath Literacy and Press is providing South Sudanese children living abroad with the tools to communicate with their parents by teaching the Naath language, an ancient language derived from Aramaic of the Midian and Moretic of the Agew Cushitic Sudan. Today, Naath is spoken in South Sudan and Gambella, Ethiopia.

After the fall of the Marawi Kingdom, Naath became a dialect of the Nuer (Agew), Lou, Jieng and other Sudanese tribes. Children living in North America, Australia, Kenya, Uganda, Egypt and other countries often struggle to speak Naath proficiently.

Thok Nath will be opened for kids who lack communication with their parents in diaspora. These children have communication barriers with their parents at home because they do not know pronunciation, jargon, technical terms, cultural idioms, and other expressions in their mother tongues. This has rendered communication difficulties and complexities at home.

Therefore, South Sudanese children in diaspora lack self-control, respect and positive relationships with their parents at home. Thok Nath will help children to keep familial norms and values, including love, hope, patience, kindness, self-control, self-reliance, hospitality, humility, respect, compassion and hard work.

The programs are open to children, adults, fluent speakers of Naath and anyone interested in learning the language. Sessions are offered in Lincoln, Omaha and Grand Island.

The award reflects a remarkable safety record:

• Zero aircraft incidents since UGE began services at LNK in 2016

The Lincoln station has also ranked at the top of United’s “Balanced Scorecard,” demonstrating strength in ramp operations, customer service and overall station performance.

Looking ahead, LNK aims for Platinum-level recognition within United’s Safety Program and participation in the Voluntary Protection Program (VPP), which allows stations to influence safety practices systemwide.

MedicareAnnualEnrollment Starts in October – What YouNeedtoKnowFor2026

The return of Jimmy Walker and Joe Namath to our TVs every fall coincides with the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period, which begins October 15 and ends December 7. This is when Medicare enrollees can review and update their Part D or Medicare Advantage plan choice for the upcoming year. Here are the highlights regarding prescription coverage:

The Medicare Prescription Payment Plan (M3P), which began in 2025, will continue to be offered. It helps individuals on Medicare with high prescription costs “smooth out” their overall expense over the 12 months of their Part D plans.

There are still two ways prescription costs could be calculated: with or without “smoothing.” If a member elects the smoothing option, the plan will bill the member for the monthly prescription cost instead of paying for each prescription at the pharmacy. Effective in 2026, Part D plans will be required to automatically renew people who opted-in to the M3P in 2025.

Smoothing affects those individuals who have Rx costs over $175 per month. For people taking generics, M3P will likely not affect their pharmacy experience, as they will still have zero or low dollar co-pays. Insulin will be the lesser of either $35 co-pay for a 30-day supply or 25% of the maximum fair price established under the Medicare Drug Price Negotiation Program.

The true out-of-pocket (TrOOP) that someone with a Part D plan will pay in 2026 for covered medications is $2100. Prescriptions filled using an online discount program or at an international pharmacy do not count toward the TrOOP. Roughly six percent of Medicare enrollees with Part D plans were projected to meet the 2025 TrOOP of $2000.

The “donut hole” and its coinsurance structure were eliminated from the Medicare program in 2025 and will not return.

Between watching Joe Namath commercials, it is important for Medicare enrollees to read their Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) documents sent in September, check the formulary to make sure their prescriptions will still be covered, and finally, seek assistance if needed.

The licensed insurance agents at On Point insurance Agency are here to help review options and make 2025 Part D prescription drug plan choices.

Michael Griffin THE LINCOLN AIRPORT

Michael Griffin is the Director of Operations at The Lincoln Airport

How did you get started in the business? - I originally wanted to be an airline pilot, but at that time, airlines were laying off employees and merging on a regular basis. Shortly after finishing college, I got an opportunity to work at an airport and absolutely loved it. After 18 years at my last airport, I’ve recently moved to Lincoln, and it has been one of the best decisions I ever made.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - I would have to say operating an airport during pandemic times. Airports are a business and rely on revenue to operate. When people stop utilizing the airport or opening new businesses on airport property, money isn’t coming in. It was challenging when all our plans, budgets, etc. were no longer going the way we had hoped.

What has been your most important achievement professionally?

- Becoming an Accredited Airport Executive (A.A.E.) through the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE). This process took a lot of hard work, but it was a goal of mine I set for myself early in my airport career.

Tell us a little about your family. - I have been married to my wife Christy for 26 years. We have two sons (21, 18) and one daughter (14).

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - This is a recent one. A few months ago, I traveled to Nebraska for the first time in my life to interview for a position at LNK. A few months later, Nebraska is my home.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - I enjoy being outdoors or watching sports. Currently, I have been spending time learning my way around the area and going to new places.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - I have never lost my interest or desire to play video games. I guess you can say that my Xbox is my escape from life sometimes.

Who inspires you? - My wife, Christy. She has been my #1 fan and supporter every step of my career. She has been my voice of reason, encouragement and confidence.

What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - A mentor once told me “Michael, there isn’t an original idea out there. Use your resources.” In the airport business, this is true most of the time. There is usually someone out there who has experienced the latest challenge I’m facing. I am thankful to work in an industry where colleagues at other airports are more than happy to help each other out.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? - I work at an airport….Flying of course!

Which talent would you most like to have? - I wish I could play multiple musical instruments. I envy those who can learn quickly or just play by ear.

What is your favorite book or the last good book you read? - I am an audiobook person and the list is long. If I had to choose a favorite, I would choose a book series: The Terminal List by Jack Carr.

What is your favorite movie? - A movie from my childhood remains at the top of the list. The Goonies. I went to the theater this year when it played for the 40th anniversary.

What is your favorite local Lincoln restaurant? - Can’t beat a good burger at Honest Abe’s.

If our readers would like to contact you, how should they do so? - (402) 458-2402, mgriffin@lincolnairport.com.

BRAND GUIDELINES

Tell us a little about your business. - Sumner Place is a Licensed Skilled Nursing Facility that provides long-term care, rehabilitation, and memory care. We are a proud member of the Vetter Family that prides ourselves on providing resident-focused care, independence, and a home-like environment.

How did you get started in the business? - In high school, I worked at an independent living community; this sparked my interest in caring for older adults, so I studied Gerontology throughout college. After college, I knew I had a strong passion to work with older adults. In 2021, Sumner Place posted the Social Services Assistance position, and I only lived a few blocks down the street, so I applied for the job. Two years after being hired, I became the Social Services Coordinator.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - The biggest challenge I’ve faced professionally would be Covid-19. Starting my role in 2021, we were required to wear a face mask and eye shields daily to protect our residents. My interview took place on the front lawn of our community six feet apart from each other. At the time of my interview, I don’t think I knew exactly what I was getting myself into. I understood the requirements for PPE, testing, etc., but nothing could prepare me for the impact isolation had on our residents mentally, physically, and emotionally. The main responsibility of my role as a social worker is to ensure our residents’ psychosocial needs are being met. During Covid, this was a huge challenge. Family visits took place through the window of their bedroom. The ability to connect with one another was extremely difficult. Our team at Sumner Place has put in a lot of hard work during the last five years when it comes to Covid.

Tell us a little about your family. - I grew up in Lincoln with my family of four. This includes my parents and my older sister. I also became an aunt this year to my adorable niece, Nora.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - When I’m not at work, you can find me on a walk or run, relaxing at home with a good book or TV show, or spending time with my friends and family.

What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - My favorite quote comes from Jack Vetter. “Treat everyone you come in contact with as the most important person in your life.” I interact with residents and family members every single day. It’s such a good reminder that no matter how much there might be going on in the day, I will always treat everyone I interact with as the most important.

If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? - I would want it to be authentic. Often people don’t remember how you appear, how smart you are, or how good you are at something. They remember how you treated them during your interactions. I would like to be remembered as honest, kind, and loving.

If you could have a superpower, what would it be? - Teleporting. It would be a lot easier to travel and see places and family members that take many hours to travel to.

If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? - I enjoy working with kids, especially those in need. My first job after graduating college involved foster kids. I’ve also had an interest in working with an adoption agency.

If our readers would like to contact you, how should they do so? - If you’d like to get ahold of me, you can call Sumner Place at (402) 475-6791!

With a cost of approximately $700 annually to serve one child, the organization reaches hundreds of youth through events in Lincoln, North Platte, Scottsbluff, Norfolk and beyond.

Guests at the gala will enjoy the Colors of Hope cocktail hour where they can browse silent auction items, enjoy a dinner prepared by ChefauChef, desserts from ET’s Sweets, and hear a heartfelt message from Founding Director Leigh Esau about the organization’s mission and impact.

Tickets are $50 and available online. Guests may also support the event by becoming sponsors or donating items for the silent auction.

Angels Among Us provides financial support to pediatric cancer families living in or being treated in Nebraska. Life seems to stop when a child is diagnosed with cancer, but expenses don’t. To combat the rising cost of living and to keep pediatric cancer families financially afloat, AAU commits to alleviating this financial burden.

In July 2025, Angels Among Us made a significant increase in commitment to its financial assistance program for pediatric cancer families. To keep up with rising costs and knowing a larger financial gap needed filled for the families served, Angels Among Us is now expected to provide over $800,000 in financial assistance this year, and that amount is expected to grow again next year. A commitment such as this is only possible with the help of the generous community and dedicated donors.

In 2025, Angels Among Us has already served 106 families, given over $525,000 in financial assistance, and had 423 emotional support program touchpoints with families in 2025. Record amounts of both financial and emotional support are being provided.

Bridges to Hope Launches Full Circle Youth Prevention Program to Break Generational Cycles of Incarceration

Bridges to Hope, in partnership with the Mental Health Association, Matt Talbot Kitchen and Outreach, Lincoln Public Schools, Christian Heritage and local licensed mental health practitioners, is proud to announce the development of the Full Circle Youth Prevention Program. This groundbreaking initiative is designed to break the generational cycle of incarceration by equipping children in grades 2 through 5 with the skills and support they need to thrive.

The Full Circle program will utilize the evidence-based Circle of Security® model, which focuses on strengthening attachment, fostering resilience and helping children build positive social and emotional foundations. Through this approach, participants will gain tools to succeed academically, develop healthy relationships and build confidence in their ability to shape a brighter future. To bring Full Circle to life, Bridges to Hope has launched the Hope Village Capital Campaign, a $1 million fundraising effort that will make it possible to build a community center dedicated to hosting Full Circle programming and other supportive services. The campaign seeks to raise the full amount by January 2026.

Community members are invited to join this effort by learning more and donating at bridgestohopene.org/capital-campaign.

Together, we can empower the next generation, promote resilience and build a future where every child has the chance to succeed—free from the cycles of incarceration.

“These gifts will continue to grow through the power of endowment and sage financial management and investment by our team.”

Through partnerships and collaboration, Lincoln Community Foundation facilitates positive change for the common good. Since 1955, the Foundation has been privileged to be part of many wonderful legacies by connecting donor generosity to local needs. Matt Talbot Hosts Shine the Light Walk on February 1

Matt Talbot Kitchen & Outreach is hosting Shine the Light: An Encounter with Homelessness on Sunday, February 1, 2026, at Antelope Park.

SHINE THE LIGHT

an encounter with homelessness with

All are welcome to join the one-mile, family- and group-friendly walk, designed to step into a story and witness the journey of homelessness. Three lives. Three journeys. One powerful night of awareness.

“One of our core values at Matt Talbot is compassion,” said Executive Director Alynn Sampson. “We invite the community to join us in seeking to genuinely understand and help alleviate the suffering associated with homelessness, especially during the cold winter months.”

The walk will begin at 6 p.m. on the walking path by the South Antelope Park Enclosed Shelter near the playground. Free parking is available. A half-mile loop marked with luminaries will take walkers around the playground, Auld Pavilion Recreation Center and Veterans Memorial Garden. Participants are encouraged to walk the loop twice.

According to this year’s Point-In-Time Count, there were 542 individuals in Lincoln experiencing homelessness. Among those counted, 50 individuals were unsheltered, living outside or in places not meant for human habitation, such as cars, parking garages or abandoned buildings. Last month in Lincoln, 117 people experienced homelessness for the first time.

“The needs are ongoing and becoming more complex,” said Sampson. “This walk is a great chance for us to share the stories of three people and illuminate how Matt Talbot’s efforts to defeat homelessness through hunger relief, outreach, housing programs and substance use services are helping people have a safe place to sleep at night.” For more information, contact Jenn Boettcher at (402) 817-0615 or visit mtko.org/events.

Vision Maker Media’s (VMM) mission is empowering and engaging Native people to share stories. The organization envisions a world changed and healed by understanding Native stories and the public conversations they generate. VMM’s educational programs help achieve this goal by sparking dialogue and deepening awareness of Native life and culture through the Native American Film Series and iNative Shorts for Kids.

On October 13, the Native American Film Series at The Ross Theater will feature “Words from a Bear.” The film examines the life and mind of Kiowa writer and National Medal of Arts recipient Navarro Scott Momaday, and takes viewers through the expansive landscapes of the West where his Kiowa ancestors once lived. Momaday, one of North America’s most celebrated authors of poetry and prose, wrote “House Made of Dawn,” which won a Pulitzer Prize and helped set the stage for Native American literature to become accepted into the mainstream. For free tickets, visit theross.org.

VMM’s iNative Shorts for Kids is a series on its YouTube channel, featuring short, curated videos from VMM’s extensive film archive. October’s episodes focus on the theme “Identity Matters.” Excerpts from “What was Ours” show tribal members reclaiming sacred artifacts, while scenes from “Return” document Native women revitalizing traditional foodways. Both films demonstrate how reconnecting with tangible cultural heritage is a powerful act of defining and strengthening the modern Native identity. Explore the series at youtube.com/@iNativeShortsforKids.

Riding for YOUR American Hero: Heroes Honor Ride Honors Gold Star Families in Powerful Tribute

Nebraska Governor and Lincoln Mayor Kick Off National Diaper Need Awareness Week for Nebraska Diaper Bank

Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen officially proclaimed September 15–21 as National Diaper Need Awareness Week in Nebraska, highlighting the importance of diaper access for families across the state. Days earlier, Lincoln Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird signed a proclamation for the City of Lincoln during a diaper wrap with Nebraska Diaper Bank at the Center for People. Her participation emphasized the essential role diapers play in children’s health and family stability.

The lack of a sufficient supply of clean diapers is a hidden crisis that affects one in three families in Nebraska. Without access, parents may be forced to miss work or school, and babies risk health complications from remaining in soiled diapers too long.

Nebraska Diaper Bank distributes 300,000 diapers each month to more than 5,000 children through a network of partner organizations across the state. As a proud member of the National Diaper Bank Network, NDB works to ensure every baby has the basics needed to thrive.

Local businesses, organizations and community members are invited to join the effort by hosting a diaper drive, volunteering, or making a financial contribution. To get involved, visit nebraskadiaperbank.org or email Mikaela at mikaela@nebraskadiaperbank.org.

Nebraska Diaper Bank provides diapers through collaborative partnerships to change lives and empower families in need, creating a ripple effect by connecting families to services such as healthcare, basic needs and case management.

Keep Nebraska Beautiful Shares School Chemical Safety Success with Nation

Pete Stadig, Program

Director of Keep Nebraska Beautiful (KNB), represented the state on a national stage at the 2025 ASTSWMO Joint Hazardous Waste and Materials Management Training in Kansas City, MO. Stadig was invited to present the success story of Nebraska’s School Chemical Cleanout Campaign (SC3), an initiative that has proactively removed hazardous materials from educational institutes statewide, safeguarding students and staff.

KNB was a featured speaker in a session aptly titled “RCRA Weird and Wacky,” which focused on unique and emerging issues under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). What might seem ‘wacky’ is often a serious safety challenge for schools. Presenting in this forum highlighted that Nebraska is a leader in tackling complex environmental issues head-on.

The SC3 program addresses the hazardous legacy materials found in school science labs and storage closets. KNB provides the expertise to plan a cleanout and covers up to 90% of the cost to safely remove and dispose of old, unwanted, toxic, or dangerous chemicals. This proactive approach eliminates a significant liability for schools and, most importantly, creates a safer environment for students and teachers.

CASAforLancasterCountyAnnouncesOctober–November Volunteer Training Schedule

CASA for Lancaster County is seeking volunteers. A six-week training course for new volunteers begins Oct. 14 and will be held Tuesday nights from 6–9 p.m. All training sessions will be held at CASA for Lancaster County, 1141 H St., STE C, on the third floor. CASA volunteers serve as trained community advocates for children in juvenile court who have been abused or neglected. This is done by getting to know the child, interviewing concerned parties and reviewing documents.

Volunteers communicate the child’s needs and wishes to the judge and make recommendations for services or next steps. They are required to complete approximately 30 hours of pre-service training and 12 hours of in-service continuing education annually, and are supervised by CASA staff. In 2024, CASA served 289 children, trained 28 new volunteers and had 117 volunteers assigned to children. White Cane Foundation Announces Name Change to Fitting Futures

The White Cane Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting students with essential items and consistent care, announced its new name: Fitting Futures.

The rebrand reflects the organization’s commitment to helping students become their best selves—emotionally, physically and socially—by providing basic needs such as new clothing and hygiene items. While the old name conveyed care, it sometimes caused confusion among donors and the public.

“We realized that many people didn’t understand what we do based on our old name,” said Kelly Lauer, executive director and co-founder with her husband, Dave. “Some assumed we served older adults or individuals with vision loss. Our new name gives a clearer picture of our mission: helping students thrive by meeting their most basic needs with compassion and dignity.”

Since 2019, the foundation has served thousands of Lincoln students in 18 Title I schools, partnering with Community Learning Center Elementary Schools. Students receive “bundles of joy,” which refers to packages of clothing and hygiene items.

“The magic happens after they come out of the fitting tent and look in the mirror,” Lauer said. “It’s not just the clothes; it’s how they feel in them. That confidence sticks.”

The foundation served 165 students in its first year. In 2024-25, it served 2,510 students, including 395 in April alone. Started in the Lauer home, the organization now has over 100 volunteers who help organize, stock, drive trucks and meet with students.

With its new identity, Fitting Futures aims to expand its reach, enhance donor engagement and deepen its community impact. The name change is effective immediately and will be reflected in all communications, branding and outreach.

For every cup sold at 24 Nebraska locations since July 30, fifty cents was directed to TeamMates, the nonprofit co-founded by Dr. Tom Osborne and his wife Nancy in 1991.

At the celebration event, held at Amigos’ Old Cheney Road location, Dr. Tom Osborne and TeamMates CEO DeMoine Adams accepted a check symbolizing the community’s support for youth mentoring. The TeamMates program, which serves 10,000 students across 186 chapters in six states, provides school-based mentoring that has impacted more than 51,000 students since its inception.

Following the check presentation, Osborne also drew the name of the VIP Game Day Grand Prize winner from Amigos’ Legends Cup promotion. The contest featured 24 semi-finalists who had earned a year of free food through the Am igos app, with one finalist ultimately awarded premium Husker tickets and fan experiences.

“Our Big Red spirit is shining bright with thousands of amigos clamoring to support TeamMates.” said Amigos COO Matt Keslar. “Not only are we proud to offer collector cups depicting athletic legends, but we’re chipping away at the number of youths seeking an adult mentor, and we need to keep working to match 500 kids still on the TeamMates’ waitlist.”

The event highlighted Amigos’ commitment to local communities and underscored how customer support for the Legends Cups directly contributed to the TeamMates mission of matching more students with mentors. For more information, visit teammates.org or amingoskings.com.

Friendship Home Launches

“Stand with Survivors” Campaign for Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Friendship Home has announced the launch of its new Stand with Survivors fundraising campaign in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This fresh effort replaces the longtime Safe Quarters fundraiser and invites the community to come together in a new way to raise critical support for survivors of domestic violence. Through the campaign, participants are encouraged to create personal fundraising pages, share them with friends and family, and inspire others to donate or even start their own page. The campaign emphasizes that every voice and every page can make a difference. Just $50 raised can provide a safe night of shelter for a survivor and their children.

Funds raised will directly support Friendship Home’s mission to provide shelter, advocacy, and safety for survivors of domestic violence and their children. Founded in 1978, Friendship Home has served the Lincoln community for over 45 years, offering emergency shelter, transitional housing and rapid rehousing programs. Last year alone, the organization’s services touched thousands of lives, providing survivors with safety, dignity and hope for a future free from abuse. The Stand with Survivors campaign runs through Oct. 31. For more information or to create a fundraising page, visit friendshiphome. org/how-you-can-help/events/.

Lincoln Children’s Museum Opens New Tiny House Exhibit

A new neighbor has moved into the Lincoln Children’s Museum, and their home is just the right size for big imaginations. The Museum’s newest permanent exhibit, Tiny House, sponsored by HOME Real Estate and Woods Bros. Realty, welcomed its first guests with a jumbo key handoff in partnership with the Lincoln Chamber, rather than a traditional ribbon-cutting.

Designed for pretend play and interactive learning, Tiny House invites children to step into a fully furnished, pint-sized home complete with a kitchen, build-yourown brick fireplace, fabric puzzle rug and a cozy doghouse. The exhibit offers endless opportunities for children to problem-solve and collaborate with others. “A home is more than a building. It is a place where people connect, share and grow together,” said Tara Knuth, CEO of Lincoln Children’s Museum. “We are proud to create a space where children can immerse themselves in imaginative play.”

The exhibit encourages families to explore together and extend their play across multiple exhibits. By blending the familiar concept of a home with the boundless creativity of children, the Tiny House reinforces the Museum’s mission to inspire learning through the power of play. “Woods Bros. Realty and HOME Real Estate have been helping Nebraskans find their home in our community for over 130 years,” said Dan Mlnarik, president of HomeServices of Nebraska. “We couldn’t be happier to expand on this mission through our partnership with the Lincoln Children’s Museum. While it may be a tiny house, we hope it’s a big, welcoming space for all children to discover, create and grow.” The Tiny House exhibit is now open to the public at the Lincoln Children’s Museum. Better Together, Hot Dogs and Tattoos: Red Quill Tattoo’s Fourth Annual National Hot Dog

Day Flash Event

The sizzle of summer and the hum of tattoo machines come together once again.

The Fourth Annual Red Quill Tattoo National Hot Dog Day Flash Event, presented by Holy Roller Tattoos, was held Wednesday, July 16, 2025, and it was more than just a celebration of America’s favorite snack.

Held in the historic Creamery Building, this one-of-a-kind event blended art, food and community spirit—all for a good cause. All proceeds from the event were donated directly to Matt Talbot Kitchen and Outreach, an organization that provides meals and vital support to individuals experiencing homelessness and food insecurity.

This beloved tradition was founded by Matthew Luettger, the artist behind Holy Roller Tattoos, who saw a unique opportunity to turn a quirky national holiday into a meaningful act of service.

“Having been allowed to serve those in our community who are the most vulnerable, in conjunction with Matt Talbot Kitchen and Outreach, I have been blessed to see the help and care they give to those who walk through their doors every day to receive nourishment,” Luettger said. “But the hot dog is more than just nourishment; it is the food of celebration.”

To Luettger, the humble hot dog represents a symbol of American culture, history and unity.

“National Hot Dog Day celebrates the food that provides flavor to celebrations across the country,” Luettger said. “It’s a truly unique, allAmerican creation, invented initially by immigrants in New York for hard-working Americans at an affordable price.”

As the hot dog gained popularity and traveled from coast to coast, it picked up new flavors, regional flair and stories, much like tattoos themselves, which carry personal meaning and local pride.

All six artists at Red Quill participated in tattooing during the day. Also in the Creamery Building, Mana Games and Ivanna Cone participated in the festivities. Mana Games served hot dogs with unique flavor profiles that change each year. Ivanna Cone served a maple and beef tallow ice cream with a pickled blueberry relish, topped with pork cracklin’ dust.

This year, 1867 Bar participated in National Hot Dog Day by hosting “Glizzfest.” Local bands Mindrott, Fascinus Rex, Face and Phuzz performed at 1867 after a full day of tattooing.

“We also started hosting a raffle last year, offering some great prizes,” Luettger said. The fun didn’t stop there. Red Quill Tattoo also crowned Miss Hot Dog Nebraska 2025 on Instagram.

“We even had a piñata this year,” Luettger said. “Eat a hot dog, play a game, buy a raffle ticket, get a tattoo, donate, and then enjoy some local music.”

From Pauley Pavilion to the Boardroom: The Influence of John Wooden

(402) 432-1370 www.liba.org

As a kid growing up with a lazy eye and no depth perception, I knew early on that I wasn’t destined to be an athlete. But as the son of a basketball coach, I still grew up immersed in the game. While my dad admired the fiery and volatile Bobby Knight style, I gravitated toward a different kind of mentor: John Wooden, the legendary UCLA coach known as “the Wizard of Westwood.”

Wooden won 10 NCAA national championships in just 12 years and is widely regarded as the greatest college basketball coach of all time. Yet, what captivated me was his philosophy. Wooden believed coaching was less about drawing up plays and more about shaping people. His wisdom extends far beyond sports, offering lessons every business leader can use today.

In a speech, UCLA great Bill Walton recalled Wooden’s simple code, “Don’t lie, don’t cheat, don’t steal. Don’t whine, don’t complain, don’t make excuses.”

That covers a lot of ground — and in the business world, it covers even more. Integrity and accountability form the foundation of trust, whether you’re leading a basketball team or running a company. Employees and customers alike can sense when words don’t match actions.

Wooden was known for his mantras, delivered at just the right moment. A few of my favorites:

• “Be quick, but don’t hurry.” - Speed matters in business but rushing leads to mistakes.

• “Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.” - Strategy and execution are inseparable.

• “Never mistake activity for achievement.” - Busywork isn’t progress.

• “Happiness begins when selfishness ends.” - True leadership is about service.

• “It’s okay to disagree, just don’t be disagreeable.” - Innovation requires challenging the status quo without undermining respect or collaboration.

• “When everybody thinks alike, nobody thinks.” - Groupthink often results in overlooked or ignored risks.

Each of these quotes is as relevant in today’s boardroom as it was in Pauley Pavilion. Leaders who confuse motion with progress, or fail to plan for the future, inevitably stumble.

Wooden often reminded his players, “Worry about your character, not your reputation. Your character is who you are; your reputation is merely what others think you are.”

In an era of online reviews and social media scrutiny, this lesson rings louder than ever. Sustainable success comes not from managing perceptions, but from building genuine culture and values that employees and customers can trust.

The answer may lie in Wooden’s playbook. He showed that leadership is not about control or charisma alone; it’s about clarity, consistency and character. Those qualities transcend time, industries and age groups.

For business leaders, his playbook remains as relevant as ever: prepare relentlessly, lead with character, innovate boldly, play big and never mistake activity for achievement.

LINCOLN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Taste 27th: Exploring the Global Flavors of Lincoln’s North 27th Street

Jason Ball, President and CEO – Lincoln Chamber of Commerce

North 27th Street is home to one of Lincoln’s most diverse culinary corridors, lined with incredible restaurants that unite culture and community. This fall, the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce and Visit Lincoln are excited to spotlight this culinary destination with the new “Taste 27th” digital marketing campaign. This initiative highlights 23 restaurants offering dishes from across the globe, ranging from Mexican and Guatemalan cuisine to Ethiopian, Vietnamese, Middle Eastern, Italian and more.

Beyond a culinary showcase, the Taste 27th campaign plays an important role in advancing the Vitality Lincoln Strategic Plan, which prioritizes the development of distinctive destination districts across Lincoln. By highlighting North 27th Street, Taste 27th positions the corridor as a vibrant cultural hub, encouraging repeat visits from locals and exploration by visitors seeking unique dining experiences. Both locals and visitors can immerse themselves in the campaign through a digital passport, which provides an interactive opportunity to check in at participating restaurants. Using the same mobile check-in technology that has powered other successful Visit Lincoln passport initiatives, this tool makes it easy to explore the numerous stops along the corridor, motivating participants to visit multiple restaurants within this culinary district. This format also builds on a proven strategy for boosting community engagement, while driving customers to our local businesses.

The project is supported in part by a grant from Visit Nebraska, with additional support from Visit Lincoln, the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce and Maly Marketing. This collaboration underscores the community’s shared commitment to supporting local businesses, driving economic growth, celebrating cultural diversity and strengthening Lincoln’s position as a vibrant destination.

At its core, Taste 27th is about more than dining, it’s about storytelling. The campaign elevates the businesses along North 27th Street as places where culture is shared, community thrives and Lincoln’s story comes to life. This aligns with Visit Lincoln’s broader tourism strategy of showcasing the people who make the place and highlighting what makes our community unique.

For additional details about Taste 27th, including recommended entrées, captivating videos, vibrant photography and information on how to take part in the digital passport, visit lincoln.org/taste27. We encourage you to discover a new favorite dish and share in the experience that makes North 27th Street a culinary destination worth celebrating.

The Chamber of Commerce’s mission is to improve the lives of Lincoln residents by providing increased economic opportunity and can only be accomplished together. For more information, contact Derek Feyerherm atdfeyerherm@lincoln.org.

MOVEMENT & WELLNESS

More Than PT: Medical Expertise for Everyday Living

Dr. Casey Bogenrief (PT, DPT, ATC, RYT-200) is not only a licensed physical therapist but also a certified athletic trainer, certified health coach, and registered yoga instructor. With each visit, you enjoy the expertise of four professionals all in one. She brings nearly 20 years of healthcare experience, with a background that spans from sideline medicine for Division I athletics at the University of Texas to hands-on clinical work in the ICU and sports medicine departments at Mayo Clinic and Mayo Sports Medicine.

The main mission of A Well Being is to make you and keep you A Well Being. You go to other medical professionals annually, even when you're healthy, to baseline your status and screen for problems. If you get the all-clear, it's a "see you next year!" and if there is something wrong, it’s caught early and treatment can begin immediately. Like annual checkups with other providers, we offer screenings and preventative care, while also providing traditional physical therapy for pain, injury, or illness. Whether you're preventing issues or treating them, your care is always personalized.

SERVICES

We just expect our bodies to work, but our mobility declines very gradually until one day "suddenly" we are unable to reach the top cabinet, trim our toe nails, or get off of the floor. If you don't practice the movement, your body won't be able to do it. We feel no surprise about the inability to run or jump but we are shocked when we can't rise from a fall when we haven't sat on the floor in a few years. The frustrating part about our bodies is they require constant maintenance. A Well Being provides comprehensive movement screens, identifies risk factors and mobility deficits to "catch it early" and find resolution before injury occurs.

Dr. Casey's primary focus is with musculoskeletal conditions, balance and fall prevention, pain management, and gait training. She treats every age but specializes in middle age and up. A Well Being is a concierge mobile physical therapy and wellness service.

Dr. Casey's goal is to get you better. And with no MD referral required and mobile care, you can receive care faster.

Fast intervention, no traffic, no waiting rooms, no pending insurance authorization, no visit restrictions, and no hassle.

Receive care in the same environment that you will replicate the interventions: your home, workplace, or fitness space to enhance follow-through and self-efficacy.

“MY TRUE GOAL IS TO NOT ONLY TREAT PAIN AND INJURY, BUT PREVENT RE-OCCURRENCE. MY GREATEST SUCCESS IS WHEN MY CLIENTS NO LONGER NEED ME.”

“UNLIKE TRAINERS OR MASSAGE THERAPISTS, DR. CASEY IS MEDICALLY CREDENTIALED TO MANAGE CO-MORBIDITIES & COMPLEX CONDITIONS”

Group classes are listed below: (memberships are required)

• OLLI: Wednesday 9 a.m. and Thursday 9 and 10 a.m.

• Madonna ProActive: select Saturdays

• YMCA Cooper: Thursdays at 6 p.m.

Capital City Fitness: Where Fitness Meets Heart in Lincoln

Walking into Capital City Fitness isn’t like stepping into a gym, it’s more like entering a community that wants you to thrive. This studio does more than offer weights, machines, or treadmills; it cultivates momentum, confidence, and camaraderie in everyone who pushes through its doors.

The journey starts with something simple and low-pressure: the “No Sweat Intro.” You meet with a coach, talk about your goals, and start to imagine a plan that isn’t just about numbers or mirror images, but about how you feel, what you want to do, and who you want to be. From there, expert coaches help you sketch out a fitness plan built around your goals and your schedule.

What makes the studio spark is the people. Members arrive anxious, curious, determined and they leave feeling a little more confident and more connected. Whether someone’s committing long term or just giving it a shot, the space holds all of it, from the momentum and self-doubt, to the joy and sweat Capital City Fitness brings.

Tracking progress is part of the rhythm here, not as a badge of honor, but as a mirror of growth. The gym celebrates small victories: a lift you couldn’t do before, a mile you run without stopping, the way your posture shifts or your energy lifts.

Capital City Fit isn’t trying to be just “the best gym in Lincoln” it aims to be a place where people find strength in more than just muscles: community, confidence, and commitment to self-betterment. For those ready to meet themselves at the next level, this might just be the

room where that happens.

Collaborative Medical Alternatives: Wellness Redefined in Lincoln

What if your health care provider saw you not just as a set of symptoms, but as a whole person, your physical self, your emotions, your rhythms, evens what nourishes your spirit? That’s the guiding philosophy at Collaborative Medical Alternatives, a naturopathic nurse practitioner practice located in South Lincoln. Their aim isn’t quick fixes. It’s journeying alongside people toward resilience, balance, and greater wellbeing.

Here, “alternative” doesn’t mean weird or fringe, it means deeply personal. From bioidentical hormone replacement and PRP (plateletrich plasma) injections to specialties like treating autoimmune disorders (yes, including COVID), their toolbox is wide but always selected with you in mind. There are also telehealth and homeopathic options, plus care for everyday ailments, minor-care visits, sick-visit support, and family consultations.

Inside the clinic, you’ll be invited to slow down. To ask what season your body is in. To find out what your hormones are whispering. To explore tools that aren’t pill-only: nutritional plans, prevention strategies, or even natural supplements. The idea is that “prevention is better than cure” isn’t just a bumper sticker, it’s a way of being.

What unfolds from this approach isn’t always dramatic, but it is deeply meaningful: more energy, clearer mind, restored hope, and a feeling that your health care partner sees you. That kind of care changes the quiet days, eventually changes the hard ones too.

RESELL REMODELING

In today’s competitive real estate market, remodels can make the difference between a property that lingers on the market and one that sells quickly and for top dollar. Homeowners and investors are discovering that thoughtful upgrades not only improve livability but also maximize resale value. From modernizing kitchens and bathrooms to enhancing curb appeal with landscaping, fencing, or exterior finishes, every improvement counts. Even smaller investments; fresh paint, updated lighting, or energy-efficient upgrades can significantly influence buyer perception and final sale price. The key is balancing cost with return, prioritizing projects that elevate both aesthetics and functionality.

REMODELING

A Pre-Listing Inspection

King Home’s Inspection, which has been running for 27 years, stands out in numerous ways! For one thing, it is the longest running inspection company currently doing business in Lincoln. It’s also one of the most affordable options in Lincoln when it comes to home inspections. Randy King of King’s Home Inspections said it’s important to get an inspection when purchasing or planning to sell your home.

“It gets an independent set of eyes on a property, ones that are not vested,” King said. “I can be completely objective about a particular property and help a potential buyer decide if it’s a good fit for their needs.”

King also added that their pre-listing inspections are important since they might reveal any issues that should be addressed before putting a property on the market, which allows the owner to make any suggested repairs or disclose previously unknown conditions. Randy said he takes the time to walk through and around the property with the clients, answers their questions and makes suggestions on improvements. He also gives recommendations on vendors, remodelers and repair companies.

Furthermore, Randy said he provides a written report (with photos if needed) to his clients and his client’s realtors so they can use the information when making choices about the property. Randy also does all of Lancaster County at the same price and offers a discount to repeat customers. Not only that, but King Home’s Inspection offers radon testing if requested, and their whole house inspections include your termite inspections.

Randy King is a Certified Master Inspector, which requires a very high level of training, continuing education and a high number of completed inspections. He is also a member of the Realtors Association of Lincoln, which gives him lockbox privileges so realtors don’t have to unlock a property for him.

Making Selling Homes Efficient

Ben Bleicher with BHHS Ambassador Real Estate, or Professional Realty Group (PRG), is a trusted real estate agent when it comes to buying or selling a home. His timing, trusted guidance and expertise are just a few things that make him stand out from other real estate agents. For instance, his technology, level of service and proven success rates are what set him apart from the competition. Bleicher said while there

Ben Bleicher

are many realtors, and many who entered that field during the COVID-19 boom, the majority of those agents and others don’t have the expertise that PRG has. That expertise that PRG has includes experience with residential, commercial and investment real estate.

“If you’re going to hire someone to sell your most valuable asset who will get you the most, and provide you with the smoothest process, you should absolutely hire the best!”, Bleicher mentioned.

Additionally, it’s worth strongly considering Ben Bleicher as your real estate agent, since realtors provide valuable resources that homeowners simply can’t access on their own. One of the most important tools is the ability to list a property on the MLS and its IDX feed, ensuring the home appears on every major real estate site. Bleicher also emphasized that realtors can directly connect with other professionals—fellow agents, lenders, investors, builders, and renovators—to help promote a property more effectively. He added that anyone thinking of selling “for sale by owner” should ask themselves whether they’re truly qualified for the job and whether it’s the best use of their time.

“Anyone can try another profession, but mastering the handling of selling people’s most valuable assets takes many years,” he added.

Making Kitchens Beautiful

Jeremy Day with Remy Refinishing has been providing Lincoln with quality remodeling for 10 years! In addition, he has been keeping up with current trends. For instance, he said green was a really popular cabinet color for a long time, but he’s now been seeing blue come back into style. He and his team are also seeing

people pick a lot of gray colors and even black for their cabinets.

Additionally, Jeremy said he loves seeing smiles on his customers’ faces when Remy Refinishing is done with their remodeling projects. So many people comment on how they can enjoy their kitchen now. Remy Refinishing makes things brighter, bigger and more functional.

Aside from customer service, something that sets Remy Refinishing apart from other kitchen remodeling businesses is that they are the only company that specializes in cabinet painting. They also offer a lot of custom options for people to modify their kitchen. They’re able to do lots of company work like adding crown molding, adding new cabinets or adding new replacement doors. Adding a shaker door style is very popular when it comes to changing things up.

Certified and Experienced

Handling electrical issues on your own can be dangerous, which is why homeowners turn to ABC Electric. For 93 years, ABC has been the trusted expert in residential electrical work. Homeowners want the assurance that their projects are handled by a licensed, knowledgeable, and experienced electrician, and that’s exactly what ABC delivers.

Bob Codr, ABC Electric’s service manager, said that homeowners want electrical installation to be installed up to code, safe and with the use of modern knowledge with options such as the following: Pop-up outlet in the island, under cabinet lighting with color changing LEDs or changing the Kelvin of the LED lamps, installing an outlet in the bathroom inside the makeup drawer, USB outlets for phone chargers, quiet exhaust fans with options for humidity sensors or built-in LED lights.

Recessed lighting layouts play a major role in the overall quality of a project. With options for dimming and adjustable Kelvin color temperatures, customers can easily choose between a brighter, more energizing environment or a softer, warmer ambiance. Achieving the desired effect is simple with the right products.

Codr also said that his company makes sure the customer is part of the decision-making process. That way, the customer is happy with the final project. ABC Electric also gives their customers options so they can make choices that are based on what is best for them and their families.

What Sets Hunt Irrigation Apart

Since 1997, Hunt Irrigation, Inc. , The Water Smart Company, has been built around one mission: exceeding client expectations through expert irrigation solutions and unmatched customer care. Unlike other companies that focus on volume, they focus on quality—providing a personalized experience for every customer, every project, and every lawn.

At Hunt Irrigation, they don’t aim to be Lincoln’s largest sprinkler company—they aim to be its best. When you choose them, you’re choosing The Right Choice, The Professional Choice, The Water Smart Choice.

appearance—it benefits the environment. Turfgrass and plant material naturally capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, releasing cleaner oxygen in return. By keeping lawns thriving through efficient irrigation, homeowners and businesses contribute to cleaner air, cooler microclimates, reduced dust, and improved stormwater filtration.

First impressions matter. A lush, vibrant lawn and landscape instantly increases the curb appeal of any property, whether it’s your home or place of business. For homeowners, this means pride of ownership and neighborhood value. For businesses, it reflects professionalism, attention to detail, and a welcoming atmosphere for customers and clients.

At Hunt Irrigation, water conservation is at the core of everything they do. By integrating pressure-regulated sprinkler heads, smart controllers, soil moisture sensors, and EPA WaterSense-approved products, they help clients save between 50,000 and 120,000 gallons of water per year per residence. This not only reduces utility bills but also preserves one of our most precious resources—water.

A consistent watering schedule, delivered at the right times and in the right amounts, leads to healthier turf, stronger root systems, and more resilient plant material. Proper irrigation helps reduce plant stress, prevents disease, and promotes growth, keeping your lawn greener for longer and your landscape thriving season after season.

Perhaps the greatest benefit of all is the convenience an underground irrigation system provides. No more dragging hoses, moving sprinklers, or guessing how much water your lawn needs. With automated scheduling and smart technology, your irrigation system works for you—watering efficiently at the optimal times of day, even adjusting for weather conditions. This gives you peace of mind and more free time to enjoy your yard, family, and outdoor living spaces.

The Value of Privacy and Security

When it comes to a home, few features add as much daily peace of mind as a well-designed fence. A fenced yard creates a safe, contained space for children and pets, while also giving homeowners the privacy to relax, entertain, or enjoy the outdoors without distraction. These qualities don’t just enhance comfort, they can also make a property more attractive to buyers. In a competitive housing market, features like security and outdoor functionality often tip the scales when families are comparing homes.

Empire Fence Company has seen this firsthand. Their team installs a wide range of fencing solutions designed to balance appearance with purpose, from wood and vinyl to privacy metal systems. The company notes that many buyers specifically look for fenced-in yards when house hunting, and sellers who invest in this feature often find it adds both curb appeal and resale value.

For homeowners, privacy and security aren’t luxuries, they’re essentials. A quality fence provides both, creating a property that feels safe, comfortable, and ready for the next chapter of ownership.

Fix It, List It, Sell It With Jayson Becker

Having a realtor who understands more than just contracts and listings can make all the difference for selling your home and buying the next. That’s where Jayson Becker of BancWise Realty stands out. Unlike many agents, real estate is Jayson’s full-time career and focus, and he brings an extensive background in construction and the inner workings of homes. His knowledge of building, functionality, and long-term durability often

gives his clients an edge—he can spot details and potential issues that even inspectors might overlook.

That construction-minded expertise becomes especially valuable during remodeling projects. Kitchens and bathrooms remain top priorities for today’s buyers, and Jayson helps sellers evaluate which upgrades will provide the best return on investment. For buyers, he’s able to identify which renovations are cosmetic versus structural, helping them avoid costly surprises and focus on homes with strong long-term potential.

Backed by BancWise Realty’s reputation for innovative marketing and results, Jayson emphasizes a client-first approach. He works to minimize stress and streamline the process, ensuring sellers showcase their homes effectively and buyers know what they’re walking into. In today’s market, he also reminds clients not to get stuck waiting for the “perfect” interest rate. His advice: marry the house and date the rate. In other words, focus on finding the right home now, because rates can always be adjusted later.

By combining construction expertise with market strategy, Jayson Becker brings a unique perspective to the resale and remodeling process, helping homeowners maximize value while ensuring buyers invest with confidence. Investing in smart remodels pays off beyond aesthetics. It strengthens a property’s marketability and appeal to prospective buyers. In a competitive market, the properties that reflect care, modern updates and attention to detail stand out. They will also attract serious buyers and command higher resale prices, showing that strategic remodeling is as much a financial decision as it is a design one.

WOMEN-OWNED BUSINESSES

Women-owned businesses are one of the fastest-growing and most impactful segments of the economy, both nationally and right here in Nebraska. Women own 43.3% of the businesses in Nebraska, higher than the national percentage of 39.1%. And they own 34% of the Nebraskan small businesses. Beyond the numbers, these businesses bring innovation, leadership, and resilience to every industry they touch. From technology and finance to retail, health, and creative services, women entrepreneurs are driving trends, setting standards, and reshaping the way business gets done. Their ability to innovate while maintaining a people-first approach sets them apart in today’s competitive market. At the same time, women continue to face challenges such as limited access to capital, fewer networking opportunities, and barriers to scaling. Yet Nebraska women consistently rise above these obstacles, finding creative ways to fund, grow, and strengthen their companies.

What makes women-owned businesses especially noteworthy is their strong sense of community. Many of these leaders are dedicated mentors, guiding the next generation of entrepreneurs while also giving back through philanthropy, volunteerism, and civic involvement. They balance business with family and community life, building companies that reflect not only personal success but also shared values and pride of place. Nearly half of all new businesses started in 2024 were women-owned, underscoring the remarkable momentum of this movement. For Nebraska, that means more opportunity, more innovation, and more stories of perseverance worth celebrating.

She also helps business owners keep more of what they earn. With over a decade in payments, Lynette uncovers hidden costs in credit card processing—often saving companies thousands of dollars without chasing a single new customer.

“I help business owners stop grinding and start aligning—because success should feel good.”

Lynette’s mission is simple: to help you create financial freedom and time freedom—so your business fuels the life you want, not the other way around. Visit chaostoboss.com for more information.

Linked2Litarcy

Kathleen “Kat” Ousey is the Executive Director and co-founder of Linked2Literacy, a Nebraska-based nonprofit with a bold vision: every child deserves access to books that spark joy, reflect their identity, and open doors to new worlds. Since launching in 2022, Linked2Literacy has distributed tens of thousands of books through programs such as Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, Book Bridge family workshops, EMpowerME packs for children in foster care, Lit Link projects, mentor/mentee bundles for TeamMates Mentoring, and the annual community book swap festival WORDSTOCK.

Kat’s journey is personal. As a mom with two young children and a husband commuting long hours, she found refuge in books. Reading on the floor with her boys became a source of therapy, connection, and calm. From that experience grew her belief that every family deserves a home library filled with diverse voices and inclusive stories. Linked2Literacy stands apart not only through its programs but also through its guiding values: intentional joy, purposeful representation, loving collaboration, and transformational learning. These values ensure families and mentors are equipped with strategies that make reading both enjoyable and relational.

Kat is quick to point out that she does not do this work alone. “I have an incredible team that I get to collaborate with every day,” she says. “Their creativity and dedication bring our mission to life.” Together, they are building active communities empowered by literacy, one book at a time.

R U Nuts

R.U. Nuts Company is a regional wholesale snack and candy company that was founded in the early 1980’s as a way to make some income while adjusting to being a stay-at-home mom. Our family worked together and worked hard in those early days, sacrificing holidays and vacations to keep the company going. In time we were able to hire help, but it has been a brick-by-brick

building process for us. I may be “woman” owned, but my husband has always been 50/50 on board with me whether it is to finish a project, or carry the stresses and rewards that go with having a business. We were much like a farm family, where our sons grew up working alongside us, because there was always work that had to be done. I really don’t think of our company as woman owned, because it has little to do with our success. We have a good team of people who work together to provide excellent service in delivering quality products that come from growers and manufacturers across the country.

Growing a business from an idea into a company is a huge learning curve, and new things are constantly happening. We have just developed a brand new trail mix, Spicy Mango Mix. It has a spicy kick of horseradish from the wasabi peas, spicy peanuts, pepitas, sunflower meats, and of course, mango for that bit of cool sweetness. We’ve added more packaging equipment and do a lot of custom mixing and custom labeling. Independent grocery stores and coffee shops are still our target market, but co-packing is an expanding piece of the company now as well.

As a mom, wife, mother and grandmother, I am grateful to my family and the many employees who have worked in the company over the years. Building a company wasn’t a journey that I planned for, but God had a plan, and I continue to trust Him for the future. Our products are available at Super Saver and Russ’s markets, or shop online at runutsco.com. We appreciate all the local support that Lincoln and the surrounding community provides.
