The ActionMEMBERSHIP Opportunity You Can’t Miss

ActionCOACH ExcelEdge is an award-winning business and executive coaching firm. As coaches, they partner with leaders to inspire innovative processes that continuously motivate them to reach their top leadership and professional potential. They work with businesses and individuals from start-ups to executives. Their coaching programs are designed to identify your challenges and to apply practical and results-driven solutions.

Linda Krei, the senior partner and CEO of ActionCOACH, heads up a team of certified business and executive coaches to help driven and energetic business owners and leaders increase their profits and their operating efficiencies. As your team of coaches and advisors, they will help you achieve more through the use of proven tools, methodologies, and systems tested and perfected over tens of thousands of businesses worldwide over the past three decades. They will hold you accountable for your results, just like a sports coach pushes you to perform at optimal levels.

ActionMEMBERSHIP Experience

Membership is a unique pairing of a peer partner program, accountability, group coaching, monthly business education, and for those who are Elite, a monthly Action Board of directors moving your business forward. This is more than just peer accountability; this is an opportunity to significantly upgrade your life and your business. Complimentary tickets to membership are available in Sioux City, Okoboji, and the Omaha metro area.

If you’ve been around the business world, you’ve probably gone to ineffective networking events like outings where you just hang out with your three buddies and never meet new people, happy hour where employees often just complain about their companies, events where the same cliques of people catch up on their summers, or networking where you truly know nobody, and are super uncomfortable even trying to break the ice.

Networking events can be hit or miss. While it is great to grow a community of friends in the business realm, sometimes it can be hard to make the time spent with these colleagues truly about improving your business. ActionMEMBERSHIP is different. You’ll learn networking as a fundamental building block of your business’ growth strategy, not for job hunting or any of the social reasons people might network.

• Monthly half-day meeting with your coaching team

• Access to the world’s top business coach, Brad Sugars

• Monthly access to the world’s top business coaching firm

• International speakers each month

• Access to online education

• Tickets to GrowthCLUB

• Mini-alignment sessions

• +1 ticket to membership

• $30 million+ worth of businesses to network with each month

Spring is Around the Corner! Joining Organizations & Talking Construction

March has come so quickly, I can hardly believe it will be springtime before we know it. Right now, Omaha businesses are bustling after getting settled into the New Year and completing year-end tasks as 2022 falls further behind us. If you’re anything like me, you’re looking into the rest of the year thinking about what your business’s growth will look like and how you can work on new tactics to make it successful.

One thing I have found extremely important in my networking journey is joining organizations. Not only have I seen my personal network expand, I’ve also watched our clients make important connections that wouldn’t have been possible without being a part of these groups. Organic networking is feasible but if I’m given the chance to make things easier, I’m snagging it! We have a spread in our March and September issues that features several organizations that we are proud to promote because of the impact they have on our clients and other local businesses. Take a peek further in the magazine to see where you might fit in.

I know first-hand that joining organizations can be a powerful way to boost your business’s success. Organizations provide numerous benefits, including access to valuable resources, networking opportunities, and educational training programs. All of these things are great ways to dig deeper into your business, creating a path for you to discover what it truly means to expand your reach.

Mentorship is an additional, in my opinion one of the most important, benefits to getting involved with local organizations. If

you’re running a business and don’t have any mentorship, you’re most likely putting additional pressure on yourself to take things on alone. The mentors that have come into my life over the years have not only helped me with business advice, but have provided me with experienced leadership that have helped guide me through tough situations. If you know me personally, you know I love learning from those around me. My staff sees that I’m always coming to them with new ideas I’ve learned from others to make things more efficient. Luckily, they’re always on board to take on new (sometimes wild) ventures.

Speaking of growth, surely you’ve noticed the construction happening in several areas in the community! With spring coming, there’s bound to be more. Despite some minor traffic challenges, I actually love seeing Omaha expanding because it ultimately means that the local impact will be positive. March is the beginning of our construction series, starting with Commercial Construction. I love highlighting the top-notch work these local businesses do in Omaha. Choosing local, especially when it comes to the construction industry, directly affects the economic growth in our community in the most profound way. Be sure to keep an eye out for our Landscaping, Building Your Dream Home, Remodeling, and more construction feature stories we’ll have in the coming months.

Right now, I have a sharp focus on the year ahead because we are all always growing, learning, and improving. As always, I have to shout out a huge thank you to our clients who we love supporting. You are all helping make Omaha a better place, and I’m incredibly lucky to see it every day.

Burns & McDonnell Wins Best of the Best Projects Award for Riazzi Substation

The work that Burns & McDonnell did on the Riazzi Substation for Duquesne Light Company has been awarded the Best of the Best Projects Awards in the Energy/ Industrial category. Engineering News-Record began the competition last March with a call for entries, which resulted in more than 600 teams submitting their best work to regional Best Projects competitions. In each of the ten regions, editors assembled a panel of judges to select winners in 18 categories in that region.

Located in a densely populated urban area, the Riazzi Substation was constructed on a difficult project site that demanded engineering innovation and the highest standards of construction quality. The project site was long and rectangular, totaling approximately one acre with extreme grade changes and poor soil quality due to fill material that had been placed there decades earlier. The construction site was further complicated by overhead obstructions from a nearby traffic bridge. This constrained site also created complications when sequencing and coordinating work crews. The schedule and space constraints were complicated further because the project was executed during the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic, presenting issues with staffing and availability of material resources. Despite all of this, Burn & McDonnell is incredibly proud that this project stood out above the rest and received the muchdeserved award.

Burns & McDonnell is a family of companies bringing together an unmatched team of 10,000 engineers, construction and craft professionals, architects, and more to design and build critical infrastructure. Learn more at burnsmcd.com.

Zuptu Becomes Ultimate Answer for Safety Management

Zuptu™ is a Software as a Service (SaaS) solution that centralizes and simplifies the safety training and management experience to increase employee engagement and on-time training rate. In turn, Zuptu™ minimizes costly errors, injuries, and illnesses in the workplace. How can Zuptu help you?

As a business, you may deal with several problems looking for software solutions. Existing solutions are expensive, not user friendly, and solve only part of the problem. Often, compliance officers must utilize multiple tools in a disjointed and inefficient way to track and train employees. As a result, quality employees are left untrained or late on training causing otherwise preventable work-related injuries and illnesses.

What is it that companies need out of their SaaS? Typically, business owners are looking for a simple and user-friendly experience, fully automated training processes, real-time notifications and reminders, automated recurring training assignments, individual and group training certifications, a mobile app for convenience, HIPAA compliant file storing and sharing capabilities, and more.

The Solution – Zuptu™. Zuptu can reduce the cost of training. According to Training Magazine‘s 2020 Industry Report, the average company spends $1,111 on training per employee. With Zuptu™, that number is approximately $250. The service can minimize costly errors. By fully automating the training cycle - including assigning, reminding, and recordkeeping - Zuptu™ nearly eliminates the manual burden otherwise placed on compliance officers. The interface is a user-friendly experience. By simplifying the employee training cycle we’ve developed frictionless experience that ultimately increases the employee engagement and on-time training rate.

Zuptu provides a place to manage all your projects in one place. They help you customize all your work into one space so it’s easier to embark and quick to adopt. They offer several products, features, and solutions in addition to providing Zuptu tutorial videos so you can utilize them in the most productive way. Find out more by visiting zuptu.com.

New Blockbuster Exhibit Coming to Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium

Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium has announced a $21 million overhaul of its Hubbard Orangutan Forest. It’s the latest blockbuster attraction at the zoo, which consistently ranks among the world’s best.

Orangutans are a great ape species native to rainforests in Indonesia and Malaysia. The primates are now only found in the wild in Borneo and Sumatra. They are critically endangered because of habitat loss and deforestation. The zoo currently has four orangutans, but the new habitat’s larger size would allow the zoo to add more in the future.

Orangutans have lived at the Omaha zoo since the 1960s. The current Hubbard Orangutan Forest building opened in 2005, but has been closed since the pandemic started in 2020. Renovations actually began this past September, and opening is scheduled for May of 2024.

The new attraction will be an immersive exhibit. Guests will enter the building, architecturally inspired by southeast Asia, and take an elevator down into the apes’ world, so to speak. The habitat will connect guests with the daily lives of orangutans in a display that mimics their natural surroundings. Guests will feel like they entered a tropical environment. Educational elements will be displayed inside the attraction, teaching guests about the care orangutans receive and about the biodiversity of southeast Asia.

Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium's mission is to inspire, educate, and engage people to serve as lifelong stewards for the conservation of animals and their habitats. For more information, go to omahazoo.com.

Better Business Bureau

(BBB) Serving Nebraska, South Dakota, Kansas Plains, and Southwest Iowa is now accepting nominations and online applications through April 28 for the BBB Torch Awards for Ethics and BBB Spark Awards.

BBB Spark Awards honor entrepreneurs, startup founders, and new business owners who cultivate the Three C’s of Trust: Character, Culture, and Community. Individuals are eligible to apply if they were under the age of 45 before January 1, and operate a business located in Nebraska, South Dakota, Kansas Plains, or Southwest Iowa. The company run by the leader doesn’t need to be BBB Accredited for the person to apply. Find more information on the BBB FAQ page.

“At the heart of a trustworthy marketplace are entrepreneurs creating businesses that will transform and enhance the communities they serve,” said BBB President and CEO Jim Hegarty. “We’re excited to shine a light on those who have elevated companies and communities.”

BBB Torch Awards for Ethics focus on demonstrated ethical business practices, rather than a company’s growth, profitability or popularity.

“These awards are a unique spotlight for the integrity-driven organizations in our communities that do the right thing when no one is looking,” said Hegarty. “This will be our 26th year highlighting organizations that each of us can be proud of. The BBB Torch Awards for Ethics embodies BBB’s mission of advancing marketplace trust. We can’t wait to celebrate with all the winners of these important awards.”

Businesses and charities in Nebraska, Kansas, South Dakota and Southwest Iowa that have operated under the same ownership for three or more years and have earned at least a “B” rating with the BBB are eligible to apply. Organizations do not need to be BBB Accredited to apply, and there are no fees associated with applying.

Independent panels of judges from the business and philanthropic arenas will select the award recipients. The application deadline is April 28. Those interested can apply online.

BBB is a nonprofit, business-supported organization that sets and upholds high standards for fair and honest business behavior. BBB services to consumers are free. Meet Sarah Barnhill, an associate attorney at McGill Law.

Tell us a little about your business. - At McGill Law we specialize in a variety of practice areas, with a focus on Family Law. We also specialize in probate matters, including guardianships, estates, and adoptions. At McGill Law we strive to make sure our clients feel heard, supported, and represented.

How did you get started in the business? - I joined McGill Law in January 2021 after practicing Immigration Law for a little over two years. I knew I wanted to shift my focus into Family Law based on my experience throughout law school, as well as my experience with family-based immigration cases. This area of the law allows me to serve the community in a really unique and hands-on way as we guide families through the courts and other services.

What has been your most important achievement professionally? - Any achievement for our clients is an important one. However, I have an immigration case that I have been working on for several years now. Tell us a little about your family. - My husband and I have two sweet daughters, two dogs, and a cat. We are run by chaos, and we love it!

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - There are lots of moments that I think have defined my life. One of the biggest turning points I faced was having children. It has certainly shaped the kind of person I want to be, the kind of attorney and advocate I am, and the goals I have for my career.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - I love to spend time outdoors when the weather is nice! Otherwise you can find me playing good music, dancing with my kids, or relaxing with a book.

If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? - Devoted.

What is your greatest talent that you don’t utilize in your daily work life? - I am a musician! I play the flute, guitar, and hope to eventually teach myself the piano.

ASHLEY

Meet Ashley Hinze, director of marketing at Center Sphere.

Tell us a little about your business. - Center Sphere provides a network of local support for businesses through trusted, proven, and profitable relationship building! Center Sphere is all about the members. I work directly with business professionals and help them get connected to others in our community!

How did you get started in the business? - I have been a Center Sphere member for seven years with my personal health and wellness business, Arbonne! I helped start and run Center Sphere’s “Network Navigator Program” where we helped independent members navigate The Network while not having to commit to a weekly chapter meeting!

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - Coming from corporate sports medicine and then starting my own business, I have been blessed with a variety of entrepreneurship opportunities, including Center Sphere. I enjoy the flexibility of my schedule but it takes great communication skills and time management. I feel that for myself, it has been a good challenge, one that I truly love.

What has been your most important achievement professionally?Center Sphere is all about supporting local! That is a huge reason why I am so proud to align myself with a company who is mission driven and philanthropic! The most exciting thing about my role is I get to see so many businesses and business owners thrive. I know what Center Sphere has done for me personally and professionally and to see others reap so many benefits of the relationships and connections is such a rewarding experience.

Tell us a little about your family. - I am married to my husband, Eric, who is also an entrepreneur and chiropractor and owns Hinze Chiropractic & Acupuncture. I am a mom to two daughters, Kinley (11) and Kaia (8). If we are not on the sports field or court we are enjoying time at our lake home in Okoboji.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life?

- Transitioning from corporate health care to entrepreneurship opened a world of opportunities for me that I never knew existed. I always wanted more for myself; to continue to challenge my skill set but also be able to stay home with my girls, be able to volunteer at school, and coach their sports teams. With my businesses, I am able to do both and I am so grateful to have met such amazing people along the way who support both work and life!

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - I love spending time with friends and family whether that be at the lake or a sporting event! What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - I was the “bat girl” for the Kansas City Royals when I was six years old. I grew up around the baseball stadium, being introduced to the sport when I was just four days old! My dad was a professional baseball pitcher for 13 years! George Brett actually helped me with my kindergarten homework while we were on a train heading to a game in Detroit!

Who inspires you? - My mom is one of my greatest inspirations. She has been through more than most will have been through in their life, yet, she is there for anyone whenever they need it! I am so blessed to be able to learn many things from her including tremendous work ethic and parenting skills, etc!

What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - “There are only two days in the year that nothing can be done. One is called yesterday and the other is called tomorrow, so today is the right day to love, believe, do and mostly live.”

Maggi Thorne AIM INSTITUTE

Meet Maggi Thorne, director of innovation and tech education at AIM Institute

Tell us a little about your business. - The nonprofit AIM Institute builds and connects the cutting-edge tech community in Omaha. AIM provides training and resources for new and experienced tech professionals, making outstanding educational opportunities and career training accessible to all.

How did you get started in the business? - After competing on NBC’s American Ninja Warrior for seven seasons taking on obstacles on the course, I wanted to help people that come from a background like myself. I’m from a low income family that had little resources, and am very passionate about what AIM is doing to make a difference in advancing the lives of the underserved with free tech education and career resources, helping them remove some of their own obstacles to work towards a rewarding career in tech.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally?Balancing being a single parent and finding a career that can also help me not just support my kids financially, but support them in life, and that is one of the most rewarding parts about being in tech, especially with a great company like AIM!

What has been your most important achievement professionally?

- Early in my career I had the honor of being the first female project manager in the NCAA managing multi-million dollar construction projects. I am all about firsts, and now with AIM as director of innovation it feels like we get to continue more firsts advanced peoples careers in tech through all of our Code School programs. Tell us a little about your family. - My three active kiddos are fun, active adventurers who have been on the road with me since they were toddlers. Now growing up and in their teens, my middle daughter is a national champion in the 100H, my son is a leader city 300H and my youngest is planning her future running an orphanage to help children globally. We are a close knit crew with servant hearts and LOTS of laughter.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life?

- In 2019 I had a Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) from American Ninja Warrior and it shut down life in a way I wasn’t ready for. Pain and injury was something I could always push past, just not this time. ‘Never Give Up’ was something I used to say and everyone knew me as that person, but during recovery and a year of outpatient, I hated the phrase. It was six months in when I realized it wasn’t just about saying ‘Never Give Up’, but I needed to become ‘Never Give Up’. It was seeing who I could become in the worst moments instead of just trying to get out of it.

Who inspires you? - Humanity is pretty beautiful in all of it’s diversity, each day I get inspired by many acts of kindness I keep my eyes open to.The most influential people in my life are the ones that would likely not take a stage or throw a winning touchdown, but they are present to everyone and there for all who come to them in need. A life of generosity with their time.

What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - “Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.”

What is your favorite TV show? - Succession, hands down!

What is your favorite local restaurant? - Le Bouillon

JODY Jody Strauch OUT OF THE BOX

Meet Jody Strauch, the co-owner of Out of the Box.

Tell us a little about your business. - Our business, Out of the Box, is focused on selling very high-quality, reclaimed home improvement products. These products, purchased new, are considerably higher priced. Because they are reclaimed, we are able to sell each product at a fraction of the retail pricing. We curate or individually select each and every piece in our store. They are NOT primarily vintage or antique; they are mostly “on trend” or very nice traditional pieces that you can put in a modern midcentury home, new home, or historic home. This is a very eclectic selection.

How did you get started in the business? - My business partner and I were involved in the restoration of high end homes in the Denver and Mountain Region of Colorado, and when searching for the perfect piece when restoring these homes, we discovered sources for selecting on trend, high-quality items in the resale/reclaimed market. We started the business in Lincoln and operated the business in Lincoln for eight years until just prior to the pandemic. We found the Historic Granary in Ralston and we renovated /restored the portion that is now our store.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - Being able to tell our story to a larger audience. Since we are selling these items at a fraction of the retail cost, we do have the need to keep our operating costs down. The cost of marketing is extremely expensive. We really depend on the client that comes into our store to spread the word for us to friends and family.

What has been your most important achievement professionally? - The ability to financially survive as a self-employed person for over ten years now. For my husband/business partner and I, it has been really rewarding to create a business that has been well received by the general public and architectural professionals.

Tell us a little about your family. - We love to travel. Our sons were born in Colorado and are 17 and 18 years old. Steen, my husband, is from Sweden so we have the daily influence of a foreign culture and also the delight of an alternative way to look at things other than how the American culture perceives life.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - Traveling across America and in foreign countries. Day-to-day would be spending time in the outdoors.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - I grew up in Lincoln but lived in Colorado for 30 years. I was fortunate to be one of the leaders of developing Breckenridge, CO as a major international brand in the world of skiing and outdoor recreational activities.

Who inspires you? - Other self-employed, motivated people that have high integrity and strong honest morals.

What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - My father taught me that you learn the most from your mistakes. Don’t be and do like everyone else. My mother in-law said to Steen and I that you can do some things with two hands, but with four hands the opportunities are endless.

If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? - Kind.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? - The ability to turn sad things in life into happy things and always see the brighter side of life.

What is your favorite local restaurant? - La Buvette.

If our readers would like to contact you, how should they do so? - (303) 669-9808; jodystrauch@msn.com.

UNION BANK & TRUST

Meet Jason Herlitzke, vice president - SBA administrator at Union Bank and Trust Company.

Tell us a little about your business. - I am responsible for managing the Small Business Administration (SBA) loan program at Union Bank and Trust Company. The SBA program allows businesses access to capital for those that may not be able to receive conventional financing on reasonable terms. We offer both the SBA 7(a) and 504 loan programs.

How did you get started in the business? - I have about 14 years’ experience specializing in SBA lending. I previously managed an SBA program for a large credit union in Wisconsin for 9.5 years and have also worked for CU Business Group, the largest Credit Union Service Organization (CUSO), consulting and providing SBA services for financials throughout the United States.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - The biggest challenge was the first round of the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) in March 2020. At the time we didn’t know what to expect or even fully understand the program rules. This was an unprecedented time and the program was a continuous evolution. I found the first couple of weeks to be very challenging due to chaotic nature of the program. In the end, the program enabled businesses to stay afloat during COVID which proved to be very rewarding. It was amazing to see the impact we made in our communities.

What has been your most important achievement professionally? - In my previous position, I was able to develop and manage one of the top SBA programs in the country.

Tell us a little about your family. - My wife Cherie and I have a very energetic six-year-old son named Hudson and a 12-year-old goldendoodle named Brewsky. We lived in Waunakee, WI for ten years and just relocated back to Omaha. We love all sports. I’m especially enjoying coaching our son, Hudson, on his kindergarten basketball team. We are an active family and enjoy any new adventure that comes our way. What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - Spend time with my family or doing any outdoor activity. Having lived in Wisconsin for several years, taking my son snow skiing has been our favorite winter activity.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - I always have to be doing something. I have a hard time relaxing and doing nothing.

What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - On time is five minutes early, on time is late, and late is never acceptable.

If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? - Kind.

What is your greatest talent that you don’t utilize in your daily work life? - Woodworking. I love to create and design new things. My favorite project was creating a wine cellar in my basement.

If you could chose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? - Architect. I always enjoy designing and drawing.

What is your favorite movie? - I’m a history nerd, so any documentary about history intrigues me.

What is your favorite TV show? - Currently Yellowstone but will change with the next series I start watching.

What is your favorite local restaurant? - Barrett’s Barleycorn.

If you could have dinner with one famous person from the past or present, who would it be? - Warren Buffett.

JOANNA

Meet Joanna Halbur, the director of mental health at Project Harmony Child Advocacy Center.

Tell us a little about your business. - Project Harmony is a child advocacy center that provides immediate support to children and families who have been impacted by child abuse and are experiencing trauma. Medical evaluation, forensic interviews, and advocacy services are provided to ensure families get the most from those responding to child abuse. Referrals are then provided for mental health services for ongoing support. We have a wonderful mental health team at Project Harmony that consists of the director, two program managers, eight therapists, and one admin support all focused on helping families begin the healing process. We offer a variety of therapy modalities that have been shown to be effective at helping children recover after trauma.

How did you get started in the business? - I graduated with a Masters Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy in 2006 and have worked at a number of nonprofit organizations in Minnesota and Nebraska. I have been with Project Harmony for three years.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - We complete about 2,500 forensic interviews each year and many of the children interviewed need therapy. In addition, we find that their siblings and protective caregivers also often need therapy. Our team of eight therapists cannot meet all of the need. We desperately need more therapists to join our team at Project Harmony and additionally therapists in the community who are willing to accept referrals when our team is at capacity. It is such an amazing field where you can make a huge impact on a young person’s life and it really is rewarding to be part of a family’s healing journey. A therapist at Project Harmony has a great team of therapists around them for support. Therapists receive regular supervision and training in evidenced based models of therapy so that they can be the best therapist.

Tell us a little about your family. - I grew up an only child right here in Omaha. I am married with two school-age children and two dogs. What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - I love to curl up on the couch, sit by the fire, and read a good book. I also spend a lot of time watching movies with my family.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? - I would love to have the ability to talk to animals, especially my dogs and our facility dogs Warrior and Woody.

What is your greatest talent that you don’t utilize in your daily work life? - Growing up, my grandmother and mother owned a dance studio in town. I have a lot of fond memories of my dance family and that time in my life. I really loved to tap dance. You won’t find me tapping around the office but I do occasionally take adult tap dance classes at various studios in Omaha.

If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? - I love to cook and bake and would love to own a restaurant in my next life.

What is your favorite book or the last good book you read? - One of my all-time favorite books is Daring Greatly by Brene Brown. I have read it three times.

What is your favorite local Omaha restaurant? - Ahmad’s Persian Cuisine at 46th and Dodge. Ahmad’s Tehran Chicken is my absolute favorite!

Duane Bodewitz of Brookestone Meadows Creates Repurposed Woodworkings

Brookestone Meadows is proud to share the work done by one of their team members, Duane Bodewitz. While the Brookestone Meadows community has been recently undergoing renovations, Duane has been taking the old and creating something new.

Duane has a knack for creating beautiful angel and bird houses along with birdfeeders while he is not on the clock. He has salvaged materials such as wooden cabinet panels that were previously at the nurse’s stations, flooring that has been removed from the dining areas, and other knickknacks found around the Brookestone Meadows community. He has even repurposed downed branches from the property along with decommissioned popcorn machines and made them into works of art.

Duane has created numerous bird houses with fun themes such as grandfather clock-inspired houses, western-themed outhouses, birdfeeders made with recycled glass bottles, and picnic benches for birds to perch on.

Duane’s craftsmanship can be admired and purchased from Brookestone’s O.W.L.S Nest (Older Workers in the Lord’s Service). He has graciously donated his works in hopes of driving fundraising efforts. Duane works in the maintenance department and is truly a staple of the Brookestone community. It is amazing to see items re-purposed instead of tossed.

Project Harmony Promotes Words Matter Week in March

Project Harmony is committed to being an advocate for every child, and while it may be an easier process to spot things that are physically harming a child, emotional pain is a harder obstacle to tackle. That’s why they are promoting Words Matter Week, which occurs during the first week of March.

While words may not cause physical harm, they can, and often do, cause emotional pain. Name calling, gossip, and making fun of someone when done with the intent to hurt, harm, or humiliate someone else can be considered bullying.

Depression and suicide are ranked as one of the top ten U.S. health concerns facing children today, according to the National Poll on Children’s Health.

If you are a parent, caregiver, or teacher, how do you know when a child needs help? Connections at Project Harmony created an easy reference guide on what to watch out for in different age groups, and it also includes information geared toward virtual learners. If a child you know needs help, talk to your school counselor or social worker about referring them to Connections at Project Harmony.

Project Harmony exists to provide effective, immediate, and sensitive support to child abuse victims and their non-offending family members. Project Harmony grew out of the vision of several Omaha community professionals and advocates to create a better system of protection for abused and neglected children. To learn more, go to projectharmony.com.

At Ease USA to Host Vets4Vets Support Group Monday Nights

At Ease USA (AEU) began hosting the Vets4Vets program in 2022. The program uses a peer support model to provide PTSD relief. Every Monday from 6 to 7 p.m., Veterans gather at the At Ease USA café, 10605 Burt Circle, in Omaha to socialize and talk about their experiences.

Vets4Vets promotes service members themselves as leaders in their journey toward PTSD relief, transforming the role At Ease clients play in the development and implementation of AEU programs. Service members are uniquely equipped to help one another manage trauma. AEU provides the location, the transportation, and the facilitation, but encourages clients to help actively guide the direction of each Vets4Vets peer support meeting.

Studies show that, independent of therapy, peer support groups and peer support specialists can have positive mental health benefits, including an increased sense of autonomy and decreased depressive symptoms. The open-door, informal atmosphere of these meetings also makes them an effective gateway toward other, formal treatment approaches. At Ease finds that conversations with peers often lead participants to realize that therapy has helped others, and that it might help them, too.

At Ease USA is committed to providing access to confidential trauma treatment to active military, veterans, and their loved ones suffering from PTSD. AEU offers behavioral health services through an in-house clinical manager and a network of trained PTSD professionals. For more information, contact Beth Kramer at beth@ateaseusa.org or (531) 247-4040, or go to www.ateaseusa.org.

There’s something about the mountains that I have always loved. Something in the air gives off a peaceful, calm energy that makes me feel refreshed and grateful to be living on this beautiful planet. Lucky for me, we have such a great option for a weekend getaway in Keystone, Colorado. We had the opportunity to spend a weekend at Keystone Resort, and I just had to share the wonderful time we had skiing and enjoying the mountains.

Keystone Resort is a winter wonderland, a skier’s and snowboarder’s paradise, and a dream come true for anyone who loves the great outdoors. Set amidst the beautiful Rocky Mountains, Keystone is a sprawling resort that boasts over 3,000 acres of skiable terrain across three peaks and has over 130 trails to explore. As soon as you arrive at Keystone, you are greeted with a warm, friendly welcome from the staff. The resort is well-equipped with all the amenities you could ever need, from ski rental shops to restaurants, cafes, and bars. The ski rental shops are a one-stop-shop for all your ski and snowboarding needs, offering everything from high-performance skis to comfortable boots, helmets, and goggles. You can even have your equipment rentals delivered right to your door.

Keystone has a variety of slopes to cater to all skill levels. From long, leisurely runs perfect for beginners and families, like Schoolmarm, to challenging steeps and bowls, like Bergman Bowl and Erickson Bowl for more advanced skiers and snowboarders. The resort also offers several ski/snowboarding school options and private lessons for those who are new to the sport or want to improve their skills. One of the most exciting aspects of Keystone Resort is the night skiing. The slopes are lit up, allowing skiers to enjoy their favorite runs even after the sun goes down. This is a unique and thrilling experience and a must-try for any winter sport enthusiast.

With its endless skiable terrain, fantastic ski/snowboarding amenities, and stunning views of the Rocky Mountains, Keystone Resort is a ski vacation you won’t soon forget. Grab your snow gear, hit the slopes, and discover why Keystone Resort is one of the best ski destinations in the world!

As a non-skier, you are still able to have a fantastic time at Keystone Resort in Colorado. The resort offers several activities that are perfect for those who prefer to stay off the slopes.

One of my favorite experiences at Keystone was their Mountaintop Snow Tubing. The resort has a dedicated tubing hill at the summit that’s perfect for families and groups. I was able to grab a tube and glide down the hill, feeling the rush of the wind in my hair and the sun on my face. It was such a fun and unique experience, and I would definitely do it again.

Another highlight of my trip was the gondola ride. I took a scenic gondola ride from the base of the mountain to the summit, taking in the stunning views of the Rocky Mountains as I rose higher and higher. The gondola cabins are insulated, making it a cozy and comfortable ride, even on the coldest days. You can even take the River Run Gondola to the top of Dercum Mountain to play at The World’s Largest Mountaintop Snow Fort! Complete with slides, tunnels, and more, this is the perfect activity of kids. There’s even an ice cave with handcrafted sculptures, offering the perfect spot for a family photo!

The resort also has several on-mountain dining options, serving up delicious food and drinks throughout the day. From quick bites to fuel up between runs at Timber Ridge Lodge, to a romantic dinner at the cozy yet elegant Keystone Ranch, Keystone has something to suit everyone’s taste and budget. At the top of Keystone’s first peak, I was able to explore the resort’s Summit House, offering a handful of dining options and small shops. I also enjoyed taking in the breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding peaks, valleys, and forests. The passes at Keystone Resort are geared to fit you and your family’s vacation plans. The Epic Day Pass can be customized from one to seven days, any time throughout the season. You can choose access to any of the 38 owned and operated North American and European resorts. These passes also include Epic Mountain Rewards which gives you 20% off food, lodging, rentals, and more. Locals and avid skiers are able to purchase season passes that get you into multiple resorts across Colorado and across the country. Additionally, when you book two or more nights of lodging with the resort, kids ski free!

In conclusion, Keystone Resort in Colorado is not just a ski destination, but also a perfect place for non-skiers. From tubing to gondola rides, there is plenty to do and see for everyone. So, if you’re looking for a winter getaway that offers a little bit of everything, Keystone Resort is the place to be!

Commercial Construction

With the population in Omaha and surrounding areas continuing to grow at an increasing rate, the commercial landscape of Omaha is steadily changing and expanding as well. Omaha consistently has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country. Because of this, new professionals are easily attracted to the area. All of this means good things for the construction industry, including a wealth of opportunities for exciting new projects and development.

The construction industry plays an important role in the economy. When the economy begins to slow down, the construction industry often feels the effects first – but when there is a strong demand for new construction, it’s an indicator the economy is on the right path. Despite the challenges presented by the pandemic, such as skyrocketing prices on building materials, major supply chain issues, and labor shortages, the construction industry persevered. According to the US Census, it is estimated that total put-in-place for 2022 was around $1.79 trillion, an increase of 10.2% from the previous year (construction put-in-place is the estimated total dollar value of construction work done in the United States). Research indicates that the most pervasive trends in commercial construction in 2023 include increased use of biological construction materials, safety features, remote technology, modular construction, artificial intelligence, 3-D printing, design technology, supply-chain alternatives, and a move away from purchasing new equipment and instead renting or buying previously used implements. As we talked to local companies in the commercial construction business, we found some of the most common trends in the industry now include aerial imaging, attention to safety, quality, technology, and environmental impact, prefabricated construction with precision engineering and consistent quality; repurposing of existing buildings, sustainability, advancement in energy-saving designs, and more.

Built on Trust

Huffman Engineering, Inc. (HEI) is a full-service engineering firm specializing in control system integration. From a commercial construction perspective, they work with manufacturing plants, industrial automation, and utility systems. You’ll find HEI programming automated controls for water and wastewater facilities or electrical utilities, working in pharmaceutical and life science plants helping to make human and animal medicine and vaccines, working with food and beverage companies, and material handling companies running everything from batch systems to create products to packaging systems to prepare them to be sold. Huffman Engineering is certified in several software and hardware applications, so they are often called on to bridge the gap between companies' Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT) departments. Huffman helps with cyber security, data analytics, IIoT, and effectively are the brains behind systems that do great things in our community that most people never think about. In short, their tag line is ‘Making Ideas Work.’ They take a company’s ideas of how to make something faster, more productive, safer, stronger, or more efficient. Specifically, Huffman can integrate systems in different industries to help them make better business decisions.

“Huffman Engineering as a company works in a variety of industries so we have the benefit of really seeing the landscape of what is happening across the state in manufacturing and utilities. One thing that we are seeing pretty consistently is the need for upgrading older equipment

that is nearing the end of its life cycle. A new facility within a pharmaceutical plant that produces animal medicine and vaccines reduced the likelihood of downtime after they replaced 22-yearold hardware that was no longer supported,” Mechanical Engineer Dustin Bredvick shared. “When a company gets to that point where they have to fish for replacements on eBay or scour the internet for used parts, that is a dangerous place to be. Not only will you likely pay higher rates to get the parts, but the likelihood that they will be damaged or not work as intended is very high.” Similarly, HEI has recently been a part of upgrading some water and wastewater systems in communities across the State of Nebraska allowing these communities to secure these systems for the people in the communities for decades to come. When they can be a part of these lasting changes to fundamental systems that help communities thrive, Huffman knows they are truly engineering with impact.

“Critical manufacturing is in high demand right now. Upgrading water systems, food and medicine manufacturing, and electrical and natural gas utilities. We are looking at infrastructure in our country right now and the foundational systems we operate on and those that will take us into the future through manufacturing and developing new products are a focus,” explained Dustin. “At the same time we’re experiencing a labor shortage so automation is a focus. With a generation of skilled manufacturers preparing to retire and fewer and fewer employees trained in manufacturing, companies are looking to automation solutions and system integrators who know how to incorporate automation solutions into their existing processes.”

Through any kind of work being done, Dustin guaranteed that one thing stays the most important part of any project.

“For sure safety. This includes electrical safety, physical safety, and machine guarding. Robotics and automation require a level of safety and security including protection against cyber-attacks. With increased regulation in accordance with the FDA, USDA,

EPA, and other regulatory agencies, compliance and knowledge surrounding updated regulations is imperative,” said Dustin. “Sustainability is also a hot topic these days as we all find ways to have some corporate responsibility for the ways we operate in the larger world. Specifically in the pharmaceutical world, clean environments are especially important down to what grade of polymer is required for a building that may need to be heated to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. As we work on specific projects with different variables depending on the industry and their regulations, knowledge of those specific regulations and the ability to validate our processes and prove quality checks becomes a hugely important variable.”

Companies planning for the future and setting themselves up for success in the marketplace are planning to upgrade equipment today and preparing for tomorrow. They are setting systems up to run for the next 20 years instead of hoping they can stretch for the next couple of years. By moving to new systems, they are mitigating risk, providing additional safety to operators and systems, often finding efficiencies, and setting themselves up for long-term success.

working on several projects including Ralston High School, Mockingbird Community Center, and D.B. Property/ Voss Electric. In recent years, the drive for environmentally friendly products and projects has increased. Many consumers are beginning to prioritize companies that use these eco-friendly processes, even at a slightly larger cost.

“Green materials are still in high demand. In some projects where owners desire to be more eco-friendly, we have found many of the materials to be minimally more expensive options than normal building materials,” shared Rick Wintermute , Kingery vice president. “As construction costs, material supply, and workforce challenges continue to be a concern, we at Kingery have the experience and ability to assess the building project and find cost-effective alternatives to ensure the project isn’t affected negatively.”

In addition to getting eco-friendly, there are a number of other trends in commercial construction that Kingery has been adapting to and keeping up with.

“We are continuing to see a demand for warehouse and manufacturing spaces. This increase has prompted us to expand our Metal Building division which allows us the opportunity to bring the best construction options to our clients’ projects,” Rick explained. “There has been an increase in technologically integrated data with all systems in the building; heating/air, lighting, security, and access control.”

In January, Kingery Construction acquired Construct Inc. in Omaha. Construct Inc. fits into Kingery Construction’s strategy of providing excellent commercial construction services to the communities of Nebraska. The additional expertise and knowledge the employees

in Omaha possess will ensure that Kingery Construction remains a top-notch provider of construction services for years to come. Solutions for the Built Environment

AOI provides solutions for the built environment through their construction, furniture, and prefabricated construction divisions. With almost 40 years of service, their general contracting team successfully assists clients on single projects or with on-going construction needs, including new facilities, major remodels, conversions and additions, to minor repairs and renovations. The furniture team can transform ordinary spaces into collaborative, innovative environments. They utilize the most credible and latest data to help their sales and design teams provide the necessary expertise to help clients create inspiring interior landscapes. As Nebraska’s MillerKnoll Certified Dealer, AOI offers the most comprehensive set of design brands in the industry. Each of these brands is uniquely innovative and together they add up to a robust portfolio of products that suit any company’s diverse needs.

AOI’s Prefabricated Construction team offers state-of-theart industrialized construction including interior walls, doors, power, technology, plant walls, timber, and casework from DIRTT Environmental Solutions. As Nebraska’s Certified DIRTT Partner, they’re leading a regional revolution of the construction process. Prefabricated Construction has the ability to completely transform how construction projects are designed, priced, and delivered in the marketplace. DIRTT Environmental Solutions can take most of the typical processes of a construction project off-site, meaning that interior walls are prebuilt including doors, hardware, plugand-play power, data and technology, glass and graphics, and more. When all interior walls, doors, power, and casework can be manufactured utilizing the accuracy and efficiencies associated with factory-built, industrialized construction, the balance of the project is generally completed more quickly, cleanly, and safely. This also takes pressure off of local labor markets that are already

“Prefabricated Construction is gaining significantly in popularity for workplace, education, and public sector markets with the largest gains occurring in health care. Owners everywhere are looking for reliability in their projects; reliability of design intent, price, and schedule. No construction methodology can currently deliver on all of these promises like Prefabricated Construction. We’ve completed some high-profile projects regionally using DIRTT Environmental Solutions that we’re very proud of including the new Lincoln Electric System Operations Center. This project included DIRTT walls, doors, power, and embedded technology,” Director Client Experience Marco Lade shared. “We also completed the Kiewit Omaha HQ project, a seven-story, 180,000-square-foot steel-framed building designed to foster collaboration and interaction. We provided DIRTT walls for all interior offices, meeting and conference rooms, including modular power on all floors. This project also utilized DIRTT Leaf Wall, DIRTT Breathe, and DIRTT Timber for interior collaborative and office locations.”

AOI is able to provide quick and reliable service with DIRTT Environmental Solutions that has proven to thrive even through difficult obstacles.

“The recent supply chain challenges in construction provided great opportunities for DIRTT Environmental Solutions to shine the light on several critical value propositions available to our clients including speed to market, fit and finish, and future flexibility,” explained Marco. “The standard lead times for DIRTT products are astonishingly short. Walls with power are 14 days manufacturing from order entry. Casework manufacturing is 21 days from order entry, while Timber is just 28 manufacturing days from order entry. The final interiors of a DIRTT project are almost always significantly higher in quality in fit and finish. More of your construction budget stays in your project on a DIRTT job.”

In terms of commercial construction projects, Cheever Construction has seen high demand throughout all sectors of the industry,

including retail, manufacturing, education, and medical. However, the largest demand is coming from inside the industry.

“The biggest demand we see as a construction company is workforce and supply chain,” explained Justin. “Workforce is in high demand for all sectors of our industry. With supply chain challenges, extensive pre-planning and creativity in material selections are solutions that we, as a construction manager, have to provide insight on for our projects.”

Cheever Construction approaches each project with consistent objectives for success. They utilize an effective schedule coupled with the quality and skill from their subcontractors, combined with their field craftsmen. Their goal with each project is to make it the precursor to the “next” project, all while building a lasting relationship with everyone involved.

“I enjoyed working on the Department of Defense and University of Nebraska projects. Our office has designed and helped build several buildings located in Minot, ND, Grand Forks, ND, as well as Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri. These projects have ranged from simple office renovations to completely new hanger and maintenance facilities,” said Brad. “The larger, more recent project I was lucky enough to work on for the University of Nebraska was the East Campus – C.Y. Thompson Library renovation. The C.Y. Thompson library, now named the Dinsdale Family Learning Commons, was a major building transformation for the University of Nebraska East Campus.”

Brad also shared what has been popular in today’s market, along with why now is a great time to invest in Farris’ services.

“Following the pandemic, owners and clients are showing more concern about proper ventilation and on the flip side of that, energy conservation. Usually, these two points of design are hard to achieve together, but new energy recovery ventilators and controls are allowing increased ventilation and reduced energy consumption to be a reality,” Brad explained. “In today’s moving market, communication and sustainable decisions must come to the forefront of all construction projects. Energy will only become more expensive to the end user, so up-front discussions about how we can design a building that is not only life-cycle cost effective but safe, is top priority.”

With so many great local businesses available to help with your upcoming project, Farris wants to guarantee that their work sets them apart from the rest.

“I feel that Farris Engineering has the ability and experience to work in any type of building construction condition and usage. As I age in this industry, I feel that sustainability and energy conservation must be part of the grand picture for a project to be successful,” said Brad. “I also believe that communication between the owner, client, designers, and tradesman must be optimal to achieve a solid and functional building.”

Electrify Your Space

Every part of building construction is crucial to the overall project success and completion, and that includes what’s inside the walls, floors, and ceilings. Langer Electric is an excellent option for your electrical work. Owner Chris Langer has over 15 years of experience in the industry, and it’s important to him to help businesses strategize their energy needs and upgrades, with an eye toward increasing efficiency and reducing monthly electric bills for the long term. He keeps up with all codes and employee safety regulations to ensure that your building’s electrical system is truly safe and sound.

“Commercial construction offers tremendous opportunities for business owners, but it’s important to know all of the rules and opportunities,” Chris said. “As you plan your business space, Langer Electric can provide estimates for everything from fixture installation to panel updates, camera installation, repairs, maintenance, and pretty much anything electrical.”

Langer Electric has provided repair, maintenance, and installation services to commercial and residential clients, receiving an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau. Chris strives to bring a level of comfort that feels as though you’re working with family, as well as a different level of customer satisfaction to the trade, which he says is hard to find these days. When performing electrical work for a commercial construction project, he believes preparation and communication are key to making the job successful.

“I make sure everything on my end is lined up with materials, labor, and communication between trades. We don’t EVER want to be the ones holding up a project,” Chris explained. “This includes establishing a relationship with inspectors for construction projects.

Creating Intelligent Buildings

As the leading control technology contractor in Nebraska and Iowa, Engineered Controls offers a complete turnkey buildingcontrol solution, including system design, new construction, and owner-direct retrofit sales, installation, repair service, and preventive maintenance work for small buildings. Since 1994, they have been dedicated to designing easy-to-use building automation and security systems that provide the highest possible efficiency, all while ensuring occupant comfort and maintaining a safe and secure workplace. Their innovative and cost-effective building control solutions have been experienced by thousands of satisfied customers.

“We live in an era in which buildings of any size and shape can become intelligent buildings,” said Pat Killeen, president and CEO. “With open protocol technology, they can connect multiple subsystems together, on one network, rather than operating them all independently— maximizing energy efficiency, lowering maintenance costs, and providing centralized building control.”

It’s becoming more and more common for a building to have one central location to control all lighting, heating, cooling, and security functions, including outdoor controls and elevator controls. Not only is this incredibly convenient, but if you want your company’s building to go green, this is also an essential step.

“Our Energy and Environmental Optimization, or EEO, program certified professionals are equipped with the training, tools, and experience to quickly assess your building’s current state and consult with you on the goals and objectives of your energy efficiency project in detail,” explained Pat. “Our EEO professionals participate in a rigorous training program, in which they learn how to guide building owners and managers through a structured process of analysis and discovery. Leveraging the unique EEO toolset, they will partner with you to develop the right solution for your building.”

Engineered Controls’ EEO program software identifies poorly performing buildings and then provides and automates corrective actions. Their EEO certified professionals can help accelerate implementation of the most popular energy conservation measures to optimize your facility.

Improving the Bottom Line

Control Depot works hand-in-hand with Engineered Controls to provide them with the parts and products they need to carry out their work. Honeywell is well-known throughout its 128-year history as a leader in temperature controls. As a twostep distribution channel, Control Depot is proud to offer the products and innovations that have made Honeywell a trusted partner in the industry.

“Control Depot’s primary goal is to offer the necessary systems and replacement parts that will provide a safe, comfortable working environment, as well as cut wasteful energy costs,” Vice President Jeff Killeen said.

“We are helping companies become more sustainable and improve their bottom lines.”

As a Honeywell-Authorized Systems Distributor, Control Depot offers a full-line of Honeywell commercial and residential products to fulfill any HVAC controls or security needs. From a simple thermostat to a complex web-based building automation system, you can find it at Control Depot. In addition to wholesale counterline, Control Depot provides contractor programs, consulting services, parts coverage, control panel fabrication, training, and gas detection calibration.

“We have assembled a team of knowledgeable, qualified individuals whose goal is to assist each customer with personal service rooted in their experience. Because our inventory rivals any of the largest retailers, we can offer comprehensive solutions for building controls,” Jeff added. “Thanks to our partnership with Contemporary Controls, Control Depot offers additional technological solutions, which focus on providing reliable networking and communication for control systems.”

Businesses aren’t only considering indoor optimization to improve efficiency and comfort, many are also looking to their outdoor space for remodeling projects. Corporations such as Google and Microsoft have elected for outdoor spaces that allow their employees to work outside of the office or enjoy a leisurely view. From Facebook in the Silicon Valley to Shutterstock in New York City, spacious rooftop work spaces have become a popular choice even when outdoor space isn’t readily available. Businesses incorporating a pleasing outdoor space into their plans can create a welcoming environment for customers and attract young professionals to see them as a desirable employer.
