ABOUT THE COVER

25 Years 1993-2018

and still counting!

Happy Silver Anniversary to Strictly Business Magazine!

After recently celebrating 10 years in the Omaha market, our team was extremely excited and humbled to take part in commemorating 25 rewarding years in Lincoln where the magazine got its start. In light of this milestone, we’d like to take a moment to reflect on the journey. It’s fun to point out all the ways the magazine has developed and grown—going from a small coupon book in Lincoln to a prominent monthly news source in Nebraska’s two largest markets—but the only thing more noteworthy than how much Strictly Business has changed is how much it hasn’t. Throughout the years, Strictly Business has remained committed to providing the community with positive, reliable local news. There have been many people involved in the effort to uphold and contribute to the integrity of the magazine, but the two who have been present for it all are Shayne and Paige Zutavern. Shayne was raised in Dunning, Nebraska and Paige grew up just 30 minutes down the road in Thedford. The two of them met in 1979 and got married in 1987 after moving to Lincoln to attend college at the University. Shayne, along with friend and colleague Mike Branigan, poured his entrepreneurial spirit into Z.A.A. Inc., a direct marketing communications company. They were printing and distributing a monthly coupon book in Lincoln until they saw the need for a business publication in the local marketplace. After overwhelming support and positive feedback from the community, Shayne decided to shift the focus towards creating “Lincoln’s Business News & Marketing Magazine,” and in July of 1993, the first issue of Strictly Business was introduced. In many ways, Shayne built the magazine, but Paige gave it wings. She took on an official role as sales manager soon after the magazine got up and running. This position allowed her to fulfill her natural ability to form connections and build relationships while promoting something she felt passionately about. It was her dream job.

Together, Paige and Shayne have taken Strictly Business to great heights, including launching a second edition in Omaha in the fall of 2007, with the help of fellow entrepreneur Angela Lee Diaz. Today, she’s widely recognized as the founder and president of SHOLDIT, the #1 brand for solution-based accessories. Thank you Angela!

To celebrate the magazine’s 25th anniversary, we commemorated the occasion with a ribbon-cutting ceremony conducted by officials of the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce at the Strictly Business office on Friday, June 15. As we gathered together with friends, family, clients, past and present staff members, and lifelong supporters, we couldn’t help but feel overwhelmingly thankful. Today, our fantastic staff is made up of our editor, Amanda Wilson; art director, Holly Ryan; executive assistant, Hannah Hundley; parttime sales associate, Schyler Zutavern; and intern, Lizzy Werner. Amanda has been with Strictly Business for over 5 years, creating and overseeing all editorial that’s published in the magazine. Holly

has been on staff for 2 years, enhancing the magazine with her graphic design skills. Hannah joined the team earlier this year and has taken on many responsibilities, from event planning to collaborating with clients on monthly press submissions. Paige and Schyler make up the sales team. Paige is mainly in Lincoln while Schyler focuses on the Omaha market. Lizzy is a student at UNL and comes in to assist with website posting and other day-to-day office functions. Shayne oversees the billing department, offering his expertise on marketing and advertising from time to time. The magazine is and always has been a team effort. Strictly Business has been blessed with amazing staff members throughout the years—dedicated, enthusiastic, and driven—many of whom have gone on to start businesses of their own! There are far too many people to thank individually, but we’d like to give a big “Thank you!” to all of our loyal clients and readers. We have clients who have been entrusting us with their advertising ventures for many years, some even for the full 25! We have over 50 clients who have been with us for over 10 years. It’s a pleasure working with some of the most successful and ambitious businessmen and women to help them promote their goods and services. We’d also like to acknowledge our readers. It’s no secret that technology has advanced over the past 25 years and print media has had to navigate the impending “takeover” of digital media, but we’ve remained an industry leader by being one of the first and largest local publications with a consistent online presence. By sharing our content in print, online, and on social media, we’ve built a lasting reputation in the Lincoln and Omaha Metro communities as a trusted source of relevant business news. Our loyal readers are a blend of businesspeople and consumers. They look to Strictly Business when making purchasing decisions for their households, and some who are also making purc hasing decisions on behalf of their businesses, because they know our advertisers are the best experts in their respective fields.

but for the businesses we feature. There is nothing that brings us more joy than when we hear about a connection or partnership forming because of our magazine. We invite all our readers to take the time to reach out to the businesses and individuals we feature to simply tell them, “Hey! I enjoyed reading about you in Strictly Business!” After 25 years, our magazine still operates by the timeless statement, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” We’re grateful for the opportunity to not only promote local businesses, but to give a deeper look into those businesses and the people who run them. On the front cover of our first Lincoln issue, the headline reads: “New Business to Business Publication Fills Niche”—a statement that still rings true today in both Lincoln and Omaha. As long as there are businesses in the area, that means there is business news; and Strictly Business is dedicated to being the source for that news. Thank you to the Omaha community for embracing Strictly Business Magazine over 10 years ago and for helping us celebrate o u r 2 5 - ye a r- o l d roots.

Just like the business communities in the Lincoln and Omaha metropolitan areas, our distribution list has grown and changed. We started out direct-mailing to 6,600 businesses in Lincoln, now our magazines go out to over 10,000 businesses in Lincoln and 15,000 in Omaha respectively. We also generate a large online reach with more than 350,000 page views a year between our Lincoln and Omaha websites. We’d like to thank our audience for their continued support, not only of Strictly Business itself First Issue: July 1993

McGill Restoration Wins International Award for Best Parking Facility Rehabilitation McGill Restoration is proud to announce one of its projects was selected as a recipient of the International Parking Institute’s (IPI) 2018 Awards of Excellence. The Nebraska Medical Center Durham Parking Structure in Omaha was one of two winners in Category V – Best Parking Facility Rehabilitation or Restoration. McGill Restoration was the contractor and construction manager for the project, with owning agency Nebraska Medicine responsible for facility project management and Walker Consultants serving as the engineer and architect. This project began in June of 2015 and was completed in October of 2016, coming in at a total cost of $1.8 million. The Durham Parking Structure, built in 1989, is a vital asset for patients and visitors of the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Neb. After nearly three decades, corrosion and leaking were widespread and severe deterioration of structural members jeopardized safety. The existing parking function also forced circulation patterns that created the perception of a full facility, yet more than 10% of the capacity was hidden from drivers and often left unused. The significant loss of parking precluded demolition, so separate improvement packages were developed to phase improvements, including major structural repair packages, waterproofing, striping, and wayfinding signage. The entire facility was painted to improve reflectivity and LED lighting was installed to enhance safety. Eight phases of closures during two years allowed work to go on 24 hours a day. Other design challenges were mitigated during the project as well to add parking spaces. As the parking function had no significant structural modifications, Nebraska Medicine realized tremendous safety and parking improvements at minimum capital cost. The result is a muchimproved parking experience for visitors that will serve the Omaha metro area for decades. Selected by a judging panel of architects, parking experts, and city, airport, and university officials, the McGill Restoration team was among the winners who were honored at the 2018 IPI Conference & Expo held June 3-6 in Orlando, FL. To get in touch with McGill Restoration about your project needs, visit mcgillrestoration.com or contact the office at (402) 558-7989.

Business Ethics Alliance Launching New Governing Board Ethics Education The Business Ethics Alliance announces a new ethics education product: Governing Board Ethics. The series is like an ethics toolkit for boards. Purchased individually or as a package, each microlearning module highlights a common challenge to board cohesion and the ethical implications of such challenges. Complex ethical concepts are simplified so that the modules can be administered by anyone on the board. Streamlined explanations and examples inspire conversations as brief as 15 minutes, giving boards the flexibility to embed important discussions into regular meetings. “This new program was born out of a recognition that governing boards of both for-profit and non-profit organizations are often overlooked when it comes to education about ethical responsibilities,” says Dr. Beverly Kracher, executive director and CEO of the Business Ethics Alliance. “Legal rulings, new standards for board accountability, media coverage of board failures—all of these indicate the need for ethics training in governing boards.” Boards can begin the program with an online assessment of members’ shared values, beliefs, and perceptions of board culture. Equipped with that knowledge, they can purchase the entire series at a discounted rate or choose from a menu of topics: Conflict of Interest, Accountability, Groupthink, Interpersonal Communication, Confidentiality, and Executive Compensation. Ethical culture doesn’t stop at compliance. Codes of conduct and other policy documents can only go so far. Learn more about the new Governing Board Ethics series and other products at businessethicsalliance.org/products.

BBB Partners With FTC, Law Enforcement to Stop Small Business Scams The Better Business Bureau (BBB) has partnered with state and federal agencies on a research project called “Operation Main Street: Stopping Small Business Scams” - an initiative targeting operations seeking to defraud small businesses. BBB joined with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and two U.S. Attorneys’ Offices to launch the effort. Addionally, BBB announced a new research report, “Scams and Your Small Business.” It provides substantial new insights into how fraud affects small businesses. The study suggests that scam activity directed at small businesses is growing, that these scams pose a significant risk, and they can result in a higher monetary loss than those targeting individuals. In addition, the FTC and the BBB have created new business education materials designed to help small business owners and their employees avoid, identify and report scams. “Scams are a significant and growing problem for small businesses,” said Beverly Baskin, president and CEO, Council of Better Business Bureaus. “Nearly two thirds of those we surveyed said their business had been targeted by a scammer in the past three years, and many said that their businesses suffered a loss of consumer trust as a result. BBB is pleased to partner with the FTC to help small businesses spot and avoid scams and fraud.” To learn more about the entire study, visit bbb.org.

Emspace + Lovgren Poised to Offer Unrivaled Branding, Marketing & PR Firepower Elizebeth Murphy, president of Emspace, recently announced the acquisition of Lovgren Marketing Group, owned by Linda Lovgren, APR. Lovgren Marketing Group was founded in 1978. The award-winning company is well-known throughout local and regional business communities for their marketing and public relations expertise in both profit and not-for-profit organizations. Emspace, founded by Murphy in 1992, has grown from its graphic design roots to a full-service strategic communications and branding firm. The new organization, Emspace + Lovgren, leverages a combined 65 years of communications excellence. “Together, our teams add up to more expertise, capacity, and creativity. We both like to delve deep into issues that are important to the future of the community, and we both take the success of our clients very personally. This unprecedented pairing results in unrivaled branding, marketing, and public relations firepower for our current and future clients,” Murphy said. Lovgren, who was the first woman to chair the Greater Omaha Chamber Board of Directors and is a member of the distinguished Omaha Business Hall of Fame, remains intentional about how her career evolves. “I had three unfinished business goals: to transition the company in a way that would continue its legacy; to find a new female owner with a like-minded passion for the community and business; and to ensure the Lovgren staff would be able to continue their careers. Working with Emspace made all of this possible in a really exciting way,” Lovgren said. Lovgren Marketing Group’s four-decade reputation for successful business and meaningful community involvement dovetails with Emspace’s focus on elevating projects, organizations, and ideas that transform the local community. “We’re really looking forward to introducing the expanded team to our clients. We have a big vision for the future,” Lovgren said.

ProStart® Teams Serve It Up at Nationals Two Nebraska ProStart teams served up their best at the National ProStart Invitational (NPSI) held April 27-30 in Providence, Rhode Island, and they placed higher in the competition than any previous Nebraska team. Team members Savana Moore and Jazmin Koebel from Papillion La Vista South High School’s “MoodFood” competed against 45 other teams in the Management competition and took a commanding 6th place finish. “Guac and Roll,” Lincoln’s Career Academy’s team of Francisco Chavira Gonzalez, Tessa Mariscal, Corbin Reinhardt, and Sagan Smith, placed in the top 25, a strong showing in a tough Culinary competition. ProStart is a program of the Hospitality Education Foundation, the educational arm of the Nebraska Restaurant Association. The curriculum is designed to teach high school students the culinary and management skills that lead to successful careers as professionals in the hospitality and food service industry. Annually, over 400 of the top ProStart students from across the U.S. - the winners of Regional and State competitions - vie for scholarships in the secondary school invitational which focuses on restaurant management and culinary arts. Attendance at the competition would not have been possible without the support of National ProStart sponsors Don & Millie’s and Nebraska Pork Producers. As one of the 46 teams in the Management competition, the “MoodFood” team was required to develop their own unique restaurant concept. The team presented a written and oral proposal to a panel of world-class judges who then quizzed them on how they would solve some of the challenges restaurateurs face daily. “MoodFood” received invaluable support and training from Educator Louise Dornbusch and Mentor Casey Craven of Herbe Sainte, a ProStart “alum.” Culinary contenders, the “Guac and Roll” team showcased their creativity and proficiency by preparing a three-course meal in 60 minutes using only two butane burners and without access to running water or electricity. Judges evaluated “Guac and Roll” not only on taste, but on skill, teamwork, safety, and sanitation. Chef Maybell Galusha, the Career Academy educator, and Mentor Justin Stout, corporate chef for Eat Fit Go, provided unparalleled professional guidance and assistance to the team.

BUSINESS NEWS La Casa Pizzaria Celebrates 65 Years of Legendary Pizza & Pasta

Olina’s Nail Lounge & Spa Celebrates One Year in Business

In 1953, La Casa Pizzaria founder Joe Patane opened his doors on 44th & Leavenworth in Omaha. His Neapolitan-style pizza immediately gained a fan base. As word spread, patrons knew they could drop by to relax and have some signature Italian comfort food. As time passed, the demand for pizza outgrew the capacity of the dining room and La Casa began offering carry-out. This allowed convenience to La Casa’s customers, and suddenly anyone within driving distance had the opportunity to enjoy the signature rectangular-sliced pies in the comfort of their own home. A few years ago La Casa recognized a new way to make sure far away fans could enjoy their favorite pizza by adding shippable pizzas to their operations. Now anyone, anywhere can serve up their favorite pizza from the locally well know shop on Leavenworth. In 2014, it was time once again to evolve. That spring, the La Casa Food Truck began bringing the restaurant’s signature recipes to businesses and events all over town. You’d be hard-pressed to find a spring or summer day when the truck isn’t at a scheduled stop serving lunch or dinner to adoring, hungry fans. This year, La Casa is celebrating 65 years in business. Coming from a single start-up pizza shop, to an Omaha landmark with pizza requested nationwide is quite an achievement. Place your order today at lacasapizzaria.net or by calling (402) 556-6464.

BUSINESS NEWS Living In The Yellow Announces Women’s Concealed Handgun Permit Class

Zoo Brew Series to Feature New Limited Edition Beers From Zipline Brewing Co.

Patty Nun, an NRA Trained Pistol Instructor and owner of Living In The Yellow, has announced the addition of a fall Women’s Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP) Class to be offered in Lincoln, NE on Saturday, October 27. This program is approved and required for women who would like to apply to the Nebraska State Patrol to be able to carry a concealed handgun. Living In The Yellow has been providing Women’s Basic Pistol Training Classes since 2014 and that class is a prerequisite for those who would like to attend their CHP training. Nun explains, “We feel strongly that a basic pistol class better prepares a woman to know and understand how to safely operate a firearm and provides them with the confidence needed to be able to select a gun they will be personally comfortable with owning and operating.” Living In The Yellow’s next Basic Pistol Course for Women, for women who have little or no previous experience handling a pistol, is Saturday, September 22. “We all know there is no substitute for being prepared and aware of our surroundings to insure the safety of ourselves and our family members. That is the common theme of our training,” says Nun. To find out more information or to register for a class, go to www. LivingInTheYellow.org/classes or call Patty Nun at (402) 432-6470.

Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium and Zipline Brewing Co. are partnering for a Zoo Brew Series, consisting of four limited edition beers, to begin launching in July. Each beer will focus on conservation efforts of a different animal species, with proceeds directly supporting field conservation projects around the globe. Red Panda Wheat, brewed with red wheat and bamboo shoots (a favorite food of red pandas), is the first beer in the series to be introduced. Launching at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium’s Brew at the Zoo event on July 14, proceeds from Red Panda Wheat will support red panda conservation in Asia. Specifically, by replanting bamboo food sources and providing economic alternatives and educational programs to people living in red panda habitats. Three other beers will follow throughout the remainder of 2018 and into 2019. Among those slated for release are an India Pale Ale produced exclusively with hard to find South African hops. “Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium is truly one of our state’s great institutions,” said Tom Wilmoth, co-founder of Zipline Brewing Co. “Its mission of conservation, research, recreation and education is fully in line with values we hold closely as a brewery. We relish the opportunity to work with the Zoo and to help engage its members to raise awareness of the needs of these animals.” The Zoo Brew Series will be available for purchase at Zipline Brewing Co., as well as multiple retail outlets in the Zipline distribution territory. Collaborative Effort Aimed at Landing Tech Firm in Council Bluffs Development Pillar Technology (pillartechnology.com), a Columbus, Ohio IT consulting firm known for uncovering and executing industry-disrupting opportunities, plans to occupy 8,000 square feet in the first office building of the River’s Edge mixed-use development in Council Bluffs. Presently, Pillar operates The Forge, its unique, energy-driven, integrated workspace, in Columbus, OH; Palo Alto, CA; Ann Arbor, MI; and Des Moines, IA. Its expected expansion to Council Bluffs would be the result of collaboration between Pillar, the Advance Southwest Iowa Corporation, the City of Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie County, the Greater Omaha Chamber Economic Development Partnership, and the Iowa Economic Development Authority. The Council Bluffs City Council, Pottawattamie County Board of Supervisors, and the Iowa Economic Development Board of Directors will vote on a total of $1.3 million dollars in incentives, an economic investment intended to fuel Pillar’s decision to locate in the region. Pillar would commit to creating 30 new full-time IT positions over the next seven years, and move into the building’s third floor in the first quarter of 2019. Council Bluffs would be Pillar’s sixth Forge, following an announcement in May that Pillar also plans to open a Forge in Jefferson, Iowa as part of Future Ready Iowa, an initiative with the state and its educational system aimed at keeping attractive IT jobs in the region. Linc Kroeger, Pillar’s Regional Lead in the state, believes the Omaha metro area is an ideal fit for the firm’s expansion plans. “At Pillar, we know that some of the best IT talent can be found in the Midwest,” Kroeger explained. “But all too often that talent heads to the coasts, in search of more attractive jobs. We believe the potential in the Silicon Prairie is limitless. That’s why we’re expanding our presence here, bringing on board the best software developers and problem solvers the region has to offer in order to build software the right way, right here.“ Pillar would be the River’s Edge office building’s second tenant. The Iowa West Foundation will occupy the building’s fourth floor. Plans for the 21-acre riverfront site include two multi-story office buildings, a parking structure, apartments, townhouses, and various mixed-use buildings. The Noddle Companies is the master developer of the project. JULY 2018 Strictly Business 15

FOSTER CARE: CEDARS

We Became Foster Parents, And You Can Too Brian and Karren Husa take pride in their loving family. “We’ve taken care of three foster children,” says Brian, “and we’ve been blessed to add two of them to our family forever.”

MarketingTip #1 Get into prospects’ minds BEFORE they search! Get prospects to type YOUR NAME in the search box instead of key words, which means...

“It’s amazing,” adds Karren. “These kids are resilient. It seems like one hug, one smile, one toss of a ball and they were in. They felt like they were part of your family—not excluding their bio family. Now they just had two families.” Kids come into foster care for a variety of reasons. Ultimately, CEDARS goal is to either safely reunite children with their families or help find a permanent home for them. Until these goals can be achieved, foster families give kids stability and room to grow as individuals.

YOU GET THE SALE! Make YOUR NAME the search term!

With offices in Lincoln and Bellevue, the Nebraska-based CEDARS has been serving children and families for over 70 years. The CEDARS Foster Care team works every day to ensure that over 200 foster children and youth flourish in loving families. Because foster parents are an integral part of the CEDARS professional team, they are equipped with exceptional training, have access to support 24/7, monthly support groups and quarterly gatherings for foster families. Brian and Karren believe that it wasn’t any special quality that allowed them to make a difference for children, but it was the conscious decision to open their hearts and home. “They just need to be loved and hugged and a family that they can sit at the dinner table with and eat dinner together,” says Karren. CEDARS staff walk alongside children and families every step of the way. With encouragement, guidance and direction, the team has the honor of watching lives change. It is important to know that there is no typical CEDARS foster family. CEDARS foster families include parents with children at home, single adults, and empty nesters. To help, all you need is a stable home, an open heart and a willingness to reach out to a child in need. “To get involved with foster care,” says Karren, “is life-changing in the most amazing way you’ll ever know. Changing the life of even one child is huge.” If you have ever considered fostering and would like more information, please contact Cassie Rosenthal at (402) 802-8646 or crosenthal@cedars-kids.org.

DAN

Dan Weber

Strictly Business JULY 2018

Meet Dan Weber, executive coach and CEO of Peak Pathways LLC. Tell us a little about your business. - Peak Pathways LLC provides creative, customized coaching solutions to individuals and organizations to help them reach their goals. Using a holistic approach focused on sustainable results, we help clients assess, control, reverse, and prevent the causes of low performance. Working with leaders and their staff during group and one-to-one meetings, we help them find their way to the top with selfawareness, knowledge, skills, and support. The four key areas we focus on are leadership/executive coaching, career transition coaching, team coaching, and hiring/developing employees. How did you get started in the business? - I started the company 15 years ago after a successful career in corporate finance and general management. I always enjoyed helping people grow in their careers and I realized that was becoming less and less a part of my function. I had great business knowledge and experience in a variety of situations and knew I could help people grow personally and professionally as well as grow their business. I did some research, earned my coaching certification, and then found my first client who was the new COO of a major golf equipment manufacturer in California. From there, things grew and evolved. What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - My father told me not to bother telling people what you are going to do; just do it and people will notice without being told. That advice became the do/say ratio, a concept we coach leadership clients to utilize in building trust with their teams. Successful leaders have a ratio greater than one. However, when people honestly track their ratio they often discover room for improvement. If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? - Supercentenarian! Yes, I’d like to live to 110 or more; my goal is actually 120. I enjoy living and learning and want to keep doing both for as long as possible. I will have eternity in the next life so I want as much time in this one as possible. From my coaching work, I know that setting stretch goals is important in maximizing success. Having 120 as my goal positively influences my choices about health, finances, and relationships. What local non-profit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? - I am a trustee and ambassador for the Greater Omaha Alliance for Business Ethics, commonly known as the Business Ethics Alliance. Trust is the foundation of successful leadership and teamwork, but ethics is the bedrock on which that trust is built. Having worked with a couple of low-ethic leaders, I know firsthand how devastating that it to employees, vendors, customers, and the community. I also know it is often a thin line between ethical and unethical behavior, so leadership diligence and employee awareness are critical. What is your favorite book or the last good book you read? - A personal favorite and the book I recommend most frequently to clients is Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes Are High. Communication is 60% or more of leadership, sales, and business in general. However, most people do not have the skills to effectively communicate when it matters the most. What is your favorite local restaurant? - My wife and I recently discovered Hook & Lime in NoDo. Their smoked trout taco, guacamole, and margaritas are all terrific! If you could have dinner with one famous person from the past or present, who would it be? - Jim Rohn. If our readers would like to contact you, how should they do so? - Phone: (402) 203-9004; Email: DanWeber@PeakPathways.com; Website: www.PeakPathways.com.

BRIDGE TO BETTER LIVING Meet Kaylee Chilton, the newest addition to the Bridge to Better Living (BBL) team who works with clients in the Omaha Metro area as a transition consultant. Tell us a little about your business. - Bridge to Better Living was started by Mary Ann Stallings eight years ago from a passion to help friends and family find the right fit for retirement living. BBL helps individuals, at no cost, research Independent Living, Assisted Living, Memory Care and Long-Term Care options. How did you get started in the business? - I had been familiar with BBL and an Omaha consultant when I received a phone call asking if I was interested in joining the team. I LOVE the mission of Bridge to Better Living, “Placement with Passion.” What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - I’m saddened when people have not prepared for the future and there are limited options for senior living communities. What has been your most important achievement professionally? - Connecting with seniors and their families and developing a trusting relationship to assist with one of the biggest and sometimes most difficult decisions. Tell us a little about your family. - I have been married for 25 years and am blessed with three handsome boys. We also have two Schnauzers, one black Lab, and a hedgehog. What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? At the young age of 32, my sister was diagnosed with a rare form of lymphoma. Her condition became critical and we almost lost her. Treasure family and friends. Live life to the fullest. What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - Spending time with my boys. My summer tan is courtesy of baseball and track. What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - My family and I have swum with whale sharks in Mexico. I have also parasailed in Florida. Topping my bucket list is to view Great White Sharks. What are you the proudest of? - My children. My oldest (21) is in the Construction Management program at UNO, my middle son (17) enjoys playing football and track for Gretna, and our youngest (14) is an active volunteer. He received the Presidential Award for volunteering over 100 hours with Memory Care residents. What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - One person can make a difference. Use your voice and stand up for your beliefs. If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? - Child advocate attorney. What local non-profit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? - I help host donor drives and am a registered donor for Be the Match. When it was determined I wasn’t a match for my sister, my family hosted several drives in Iowa and Nebraska to raise awareness for the need for blood marrow donors. Through Be the Match, my sister was able to find a perfect match from a donor in Germany. I’m also an American Red Cross blood donor and do some hospice volunteering. What is your favorite local restaurant? - Anything Mexican! If you could have dinner with one famous person from the past or present, who would it be? - My grandparents who have passed on. I was close with them and miss them dearly. They had wonderful stories to share. If our readers would like to contact you, how should they do so? - Phone: (515) 710-4848; Email: Kaylee@bridgetobetterliving.com; Website: www.bridgetobetterliving.com.

We have a one-of-a-kind $2.5 million “Experience Center” in Omaha, NE. How did you get started in the business? - I was working in another industry when someone from Echo Systems who thought I would be a good fit for the business approached me about an employment opportunity. Once I got started working with the Echo System team I realized it really was a perfect fit for me, and it has been an absolute joy working with them every day! What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - “Be teachable and treatable. It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it.” If you think about that, you’ll do things differently. That has been a major part of my professional and personal life; you never know who you might meet. What are you most proud of? - My daughter and granddaughter. They make me proud each and every day! What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? To have been given the opportunity to work in the tech industry. It was a completely different career path for me and with the continuously changing landscape of technology, it definitely keeps you on your toes! The fact that I work with such a talented group of individuals helps me grow and expand my knowledge base every day. What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - My family has been involved in two restaurant operations in Omaha for over 50 years. My uncles, Al Cascio and Joe Cascio, started Cascio’s Steak House and my aunt and uncle, Rose and Fred Bruning, started Big Fred’s Pizza. Both restaurants are still being run by family members and remain two of Omaha’s longtime favorites. If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? - Creative. If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? - I’d love to be a fashion designer. Fashion is so much fun and a great way to show off your creativity and personality each time you walk into a room. What is your favorite local restaurant? - Of course my family’s restaurants, but definitely can’t forget about Pasta Amore, which is amazing too! If you could have dinner with one famous person from the past or present, who would it be? - Warren Buffett. He’s been incredibly successful for such a long period of time, so I might be able to pick up some great finance tips at the very least! Is there anything else you’d like to mention to our readers who are interested in what Echo Systems has to offer? - If you’re looking for help learning about how you could use technology to enhance your home or business, I’d love to talk. We essentially make technology smarter and more intuitive for people’s lives. I recommend that anyone interested come and see our Experience Center firsthand. Words just don’t do it justice! NORTHWEST FEED & GRAIN CO. Meet Steve Probst, co-owner of Northwest Feed & Grain Co. Tell us a little about your business. Northwest Feed & Grain Co. is a diverse provider of animal feeds, animal supplies, lawn and garden products, animal bedding products, livestock equipment and outdoor items. How did the business get its start? - Our exact location at 8625 Military Rd. has been in operation since the 1940s. Prior to that it used to be 8 miles from Omaha and was a feed and grain operation, as well as supplying coal and some lumber for local farmers. Our family got involved in the business in 1978 and has acquired ownership over time. What is the most unique or interesting thing about your business that many people probably don’t know? - Most people aren’t aware of the diversity of animal feeds we provide and the logistics of our operations. We actually have two locations; there’s Northwest Feed & Grain in Omaha and we have another location in Blair, NE, WashCo Feed & Supply. The two locations are vastly different. Our Omaha location is more of a retail store, whereas our location in Blair is more on the commercial side. We deliver most of the feed from our Blair location directly out to farmer-feeder operations. What types of customers do you typically serve? - One of our most high-profile clients is the Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium. We provide them with everything from elephant supplements to primate diets, hoof stock diets, specialized diets for the flamingos and kangaroos/wallabies, and at least 20-30 more items for various species of exotic animals in the care of the Zoo. We are also one of the area’s larger providers of equine feeds and serve many cow/ calf producers as well as feed yards raising cattle. As for our Omaha location specifically, pet business is the majority of what we do there. We’ve seen a big increase in customers who are raising poultry in their backyards; people really like having the ability to raise their own animals and having access to farm-fresh eggs without needing to have a farming operation. Then there are acreage owners raising sheep, goats, pigs, calves, etc. We actually do business with quite a few wild bird enthusiasts too, as feeding them and birdwatching has become a popular hobby. What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - One of the biggest challenges was being a young person in the business back in the early 80s and acquiring financing and operating capital to grow our business over the years. What has been your most important achievement professionally? - Continuing to successfully operate a family-owned business with all of the challenges that both a family business and just a business itself bring. With husbands, wives, and a son working together as family and business partners, and never completely getting away from your work, it can be a challenge. I believe we have done a great job of balancing the combination of the two. Tell us a little about your family. - My wife Diane and I, and my son Joe and his wife Amber, are the owners of our business. We also have two daughters, Jenni and Jill, sons-in-law Chris and Sam, and are the proud grandparents of six grandchildren: Lena, Ben, Max, Alex, Sam, and Weston. They all live in the Omaha area. What are you the most proud of? - That would definitely be my family. Parents, kids, and grandkids! Most of everything that we are and do has revolved around our business, and it has taken a lot of hard work and sacrifice to make it happen, so I’m extremely proud of our accomplishments in running a successful business too. If our readers would like to contact you, how should they do so? Phone: (402) 571-0305; Website: www.northwest-feed.com.

RED LION ROOFING Meet Jorge Andazola, the owner of Red Lion Roofing. Tell us a little about your business. - Red Lion Roofing is a local company that is dedicated to helping our customers navigate their exterior home repair projects from start to finish. What truly sets us apart is our passion for customer satisfaction. We enjoy delighting our customers by going the extra mile on every job no matter how large or small. How did you get started in the business? - I’m originally from Grand Island, NE. After I graduated high school, I attended UNL and then transferred to Nebraska Wesleyan University, where I obtained my business degree with a project management certification. I actually started roofing with my neighbor as a weekend job, mainly doing new construction for builders in Lincoln. I learned from him and when he moved to Texas, I bought his company and ran it as a side job for about two years. When I saw that I needed to focus on either my roofing or corporate career, I decided corporate. About a year later, I lost my corporate job due to restructuring. At that point, I was panicking; I had not been in the job market in over 12 years. I interviewed for various positions with no luck. After about 3 months, I had a long heart-toheart talk with my wife and we decided to go all-in on starting our own roofing company. Best decision, hands down! With the help of my good friend, Red Lion Roofing was started in 2017. Thanks to hard work and countless hours behind the wheel, we are making moves in the right direction to become a household name when it comes to roofing and exterior craftsmanship.

Family is the most important thing to me; everything I do, I do for them. What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? Leaving the corporate world and all of the security and perks that come along with it behind to start out on my own. This was a scary/exciting/ challenging/satisfying experience. What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - I do enjoy a day to Netflix binge! What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - Observing both of my parents and the work ethic that they brought to everything they did was very inspiring. You Don’t Have to Like Prospecting, You Just Have to Do It

Bob absolutely detests cold calling, and when he is in a sales slump, like he is this month, he’ll do just about anything to avoid the phone. He’ll update his CRM with all the new phone numbers that he can remember. Picking the lint off his suit becomes a serious endeavor. Figuring out his commissions, then considering if he should make some sales beyond the normal price points, requires intense calculator work. Lunchtime starts at around 10:40 a.m. With luck, he’ll remember that one of his customers mentioned three months ago that she might know someone whom he should stop by and see. At last, someone to call. But, unfortunately, she is on vacation this week. Have to mark that one to call next week. Going through his CRM file of past “dead” prospects, he decides to sort them by when he saw them last. Then he’ll call the oldest ones, figuring that by now they probably want something. But, looking at the contacts, he realizes that not all of them have Date Of Last Contact filled in. “Damn, that won’t work,” he mutters to himself. “I know what I can do,” he says to himself, feeling much better. “I’ll go find the sales manager and bug him about not having the latest product information sheets that were promised five weeks ago. I really need them today if I’m going to get anywhere.” Coming back to his desk an hour later, without any new product information sheets, he decides that now, since its 2:10 Wednesday afternoon, no one he calls will have any time for him. “I’ve got an appointment tomorrow morning at 10:45 so that kills tomorrow for cold calling,” he reasons. “I think I’ll spend the rest of the day preparing for that meeting. It is my first time into the company. I want to make a good impression.” Bob has not accomplished any prospecting activity that will generate any future sales. In fact, as he sits there, his prospects are being cold-called

by the competition. And if he contacts them some other day, only to find out they bought from the competition, will he see the point of “Why didn’t you cold call me?” Unless you have a prospecting plan that is reasonable and doable, you will never do any serious prospecting. Instead, much like Bob, you will go from day to day “running into” prospects who might or might not buy your product. Most salespeople decide to create a prospecting plan when they are in a sales slump. While a sales slump does provide motivation to do something, the psychological push to do something is based on the fear of failing. Fear is a lousy motivator because every act that the salesperson thinks of doing becomes tinged with the thought that it won’t work. “And since it won’t work,” thinks the salesperson in the slump, “why bother doing it? I’ll just fail.” The vicious circle of a sales slump, fear of failing, then thinking of things to do but coloring them as probable failures, leads to doing nothing productive. Perhaps Bob’s preparation for tomorrow’s appointment will result in a sale. If it does, he will believe that when he is in a sales slump, the proper action to take is preparing for a future appointment. What will Bob do when he does not have an appointment the following day? There are many ways for salespeople to prospect. Cold calling on the phone, physically showing up unannounced, sending invitations to seminars, asking existing customers, “If you were me, who would you call?”—literally hundreds of ways. None of them will work unless the salesperson does them on a daily basis. You don’t have to like prospecting, you just have to do it. Tee It Up Fore Sight Raises Money for Outlook Nebraska’s Programs for the Blind On June 7, it was the perfect day for 188 golfers and nine Blind Golf Academy participants to hit the course. Outlook Nebraska’s Tee It Up Fore Sight tournament, with proceeds benefiting Outlook’s Enrichment Programs and Blind Golfer Academy, were held at Indian Creek Golf Course. The four-person scramble tournament had three flights. Golfers teed off at noon, following a grab-and-go lunch, with a shotgun start. This year, a women’s flight was added, and eleven teams participated. The tournament concluded with a short overview presentation of Outlook’s Enrichment Programs. Outlook Nebraska’s Blind Golf Academy took place in the morning. Several visually impaired golfers were paired with golf pros and adaptive sports specialists to learn putting, chipping, and driving. Following their lessons, they played a few holes on the course, meeting up with the tournament golfers at lunch before they took to the links. Nearly $40,000 was raised for Outlook Nebraska’s Enrichment Programs. Through recreation activities designed for teens with vision loss, participants gain confidence, build skills that will stay with them into adulthood, and are able to form valuable friendships with peers who understand visual challenges. These activities include the Blind Golfer Academy. With the help of generous donors, Outlook Nebraska clients are also reconnecting with the world by learning how to use computers, smartphones, and other devices with limited or no vision. Additionally, they are able to do the things they love, such as attending audio described live theater performances and tactile art workshops, through Outlook’s Enrichment Programs. Thank you to the following partners for supporting Outlook Nebraska programs: American National Bank, UMB Bank, Industrial Packaging Corp, Sam’s Club, Truhlsen Eye Institute, and Vistage. On July 21, National Be Someone Day challenges each of us to take 10 seconds to make a difference in the life of a child. What can be done in ten seconds? We can order a cup of coffee or water a plant. We can hear or tell a bad joke. In ten seconds, we can change our minds and after doing so say a prayer of thanks. When we walk into a room, in that time, we can register the pain in someone’s eyes and begin to provide comfort. We can praise and honor someone who deserves it. We can also commit to report child abuse. On National Be Someone Day, take the pledge to be the person to make a difference in a child’s life. Most importantly, be someone prepared to report when a child trusts you enough to tell you they’ve been hurt. How to Observe: Take the pledge on National Be Someone Day (www.ProjectBeSomeone. org). Use #BeSomeoneDay to share on social media. Project Harmony founded National Be Someone Day to help end child abuse and bring communities together through education and awareness. Groups like Project Pink’d and its Gift of Hope program are so very important,” said Kathy Bressler, CHI Health senior vice president, chief operating officer. The Project Pink’d EXPOSED: That’s How We Roll 9th Annual Benefit will be held at the Hilton Downtown Omaha Grand Ballroom on Friday, August 17. The event is officially sold out with an expected attendance of over 650 guests. “We welcome CHI Health’s new role and increased support for our mission as Presenting Sponsor for our annual fundraising event. It is vital to our success in helping survivors that leaders in our community, like CHI Health, validate our efforts through their support. We will continue providing services to survivors in our community so CHI Health and all our sponsors, supporters and volunteers are proud of what we accomplish together,” said Cynthia Sturgeon, Project Pink’d founder and president. Embracing their “What’s Raised Here Stays Here” philosophy, all proceeds from the evening will directly benefit survivors in Nebraska and Western Iowa.

Representing Arizona, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico and Utah, participants spent the week learning from their peers on topics including: recruiting strategies for attracting physicians, developing strong organizational cultures in rural critical access hospitals and challenges surrounding population health. The Nebraska Hospital Association (NHA) served as host and Galen Wiser, a member of the NHA Board of Directors, served as chair of the symposium. Galen serves on the Board of Trustees for Providence Medical Center in Wayne, Nebraska. “This was a very successful symposium, packed with some really dynamic speakers and lots of timely information;” remarked Wiser. “Omaha served as a great city for this event and hats off to the NHA for being such gracious hosts.”

Zoetis Recognized as Corporate Blood Drive Sponsor of the Year Nebraska Comm unity Blood Bank (NCBB) recognized Zoetis as its Corporate Sponsor of the Year for rallying employees to donate more blood than any other of the local nonprofit blood bank’s corporate partners. Zoetis beat out its Pictured (L-R): Betty Mason, Bill Short, c o m p e t i t o r, D u n c a n Aviation, by just 34 units Danielle Griffin, Kari Lunden, and Jack Coogan. of blood—a narrow win, but a victory nonetheless. Both Zoetis and Duncan Aviation host blood drives every other month with NCBB, and together rallied employees to generously donate nearly 1,200 units of blood in 2017. “Both organizations did an absolutely wonderful job promoting and growing the competition,” said Kari Lundeen, NCBB donor recruitment representative. “We saw a 27% increase in donations from both groups overall and a 30% increase in new donors. It created a friendly rivalry and also got more employees involved. The true winners are the patients in local hospitals receiving the generous donations.” Each organization had their own tactics for recruiting blood donors, including giveaways, internal promotion from leadership, newsletter features and free blood typing at lunch and learns. Does your company’s culture include giving back? NCBB hopes to grow the challenge to include more organizations. If you’re interested in upping your blood donation game or want to host your own friendly blood drive competition, call (402) 486-9427 or email blooddrives@ NCBB.org. JULY 2018 Strictly Business 31

Men’s Health Attention guys – what are you doing to take care of yourselves? Are there things you’re currently doing to improve your health? What have you made a part of your routine or a priority to stay in good health? While these answers will vary for each individual, they probably involve nutrition, regular physical activity, and regular visits to a physician and dentist, as well as perhaps an optometrist, audiologist, chiropractor, massage therapist, counselor, or other specialized care providers. Much more common today, perhaps you’re even trying out some holistic approaches or that cool new cutting-edge thing that has just been introduced. From diet and exercise to sleep habits, work-related aspects of wellness, and an outlet for stress relief among other things, self-care is important but is still all-too-often overlooked or not as much of a priority in our lives as it should be. It is human nature that how we look impacts how we feel, and vice versa. There’s a powerful connection that dates back as far as the very first civilizations. If there’s something about your appearance that bothers you, chances are addressing it will benefit you in other ways than just boosting your confidence. For men, some common issues that cause a negative body image are excess weight, hair loss, and hormone imbalance. The solutions to any of these can be found at JMISKO surgical design | md. Brianna Kuebler with JMISKO Brianna Kuebler surgical design | md goes a little more inJMISKO depth on each: Hair Restoration: “Whether you are in early stages of hair loss and need prevention options or in later stages that require a hair restoration, Dr. Justin Misko, M.D. has over a decade of experience in hair restoration and hair loss management. From prescriptions and topical hair loss products to the most advanced robotic tool on the market for hair restoration, we are experts at every option and for every budget.” Hormone Replacement Therapy: “As we age it becomes more difficult for our bodies to produce appropriate levels of hormones — this can cause unwanted symptoms that affect everyday life. We have a hormone expert that specializes in Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) to relieve symptoms of andropause for men.” Weight Loss Solutions: “Our weight loss expert specializes in programs for weight loss and weight loss management. The programs are designed to not only lose weight but to keep it off. There are many different options we offer for weight loss, including appetite suppressants, supplements, B12 injections, and specialized weight loss programs.” Delving deeper into hair restoration, she explains, “So long to the days of hair plugs. We are currently the only facility in Nebraska that offers the robotic hair restoration option. With the evolution of technology and equipment, more options have become available for quicker, more natural-looking results. The variety of options gives our patients multiple different routes to go. If you are considering making an investment in a hair transplant, be aware that experience truly matters. Not only does experience matter, but options and results matter equally as well. We offer a variety of options for hair restoration — just because the ARTAS robotic hair transplant option is best-suited for one patient, does not mean that it is for another. The only way to know which options are best for you is to schedule a hair consultation with Dr. Justin Misko, M.D. His decade

of experience will ensure you get it right the first time. You cannot put a price tag on happiness and confidence. Finally, it’s important to know that you are not alone. If you are feeling embarrassed, unsure, or inadequate because of hair loss, at JMISKO there ARE options. Whether you are in your early 20s and noticing premature thinning/balding hair or you’re in your late 50s — we treat every case with the same quality and care. We have treated young, old, and everyone in between. If hair loss is hindering your personal or professional life, we encourage you to schedule a consultation and find out the options you have.” Kuebler also makes note of one of their offerings that is a relatively newer concept to most people, stem cell therapy. “Stem cell therapy utilizes cutting-edge techniques and harnesses the power of the patient’s own stem cells to naturally heal areas of discomfort or pain. The simple, 45-minute procedure can relieve pain, promote healing, and may be a viable option to surgery. We have seen an avid golfer come in thinking there was no way he’d ever swing a golf club again. One treatment and six months later, he has played multiple times, pain-free. Over the past decade, the medical field has benefited tremendously from stem cell research. These scientific findings have given way to the new, exciting field of Regenerative Medicine. We believe stem cell therapy is the future of medicine and are excited to provide this progressive, ahead-of-the-curve treatment option to our patients.” In closing, Kuebler notes, “Anyone who is interested in a consultation for hair restoration, hormone replacement, weight loss, or stem cell therapy, please call (402) 484-5144 or visit jmisko.com for more information.” As far as products we use in our daily lives, no matter what you’re looking for to improve your health or enhance your quality of life, you’re likely to find it at Cherish You Boutique. “We offer natural, organic, drug-free products that are good for your health,” says Donna Retherford with Cherish You Boutique. “From the incredible Kangan Water systems and Püre-Light miniature air purification systems to product lines from Native Deodorant, Monat, VOXX, Plexus and Core Health, there’s so much here under one roof that can have a dramatic positive impact on your health and wellness. There have been many advancements in the health products field and we try to provide as Donna Retherford many of them to the public as possible. From proper PH drinking water to performance Cherish You Boutique socks to supplementation, we want our community to know that they can come to our shop for 1-on-1 or group sessions and learn all about the health benefits that are available from today’s health products. Men, in particular, need to know that there are many very beneficial health and personal care products out there just for them. And it doesn’t make them any less manly for using them. The benefits are too great to allow old stereotypes to keep them from seeing the results.” Today, there’s so much out there to help you achieve optimal health and wellness. With that being the case, it’s encouraging to think that there’s a solution out there just waiting for you to find it, or the thing you’re missing that would make your life so much more enjoyable healthwise. Cheers to your continued enjoyment of healthy and happy lives, gentlemen readers! JULY 2018 Strictly Business

Las VegasThe City That Never Sleeps Since it’d been almost 2 years since our last visit, we decided to go back to Las Vegas where there are always new things to see, do, and (best of all) eat! Here are some of our favorites: Hakkasan Restaurant | hakkasan.com | (702) 891-7888 On the first night, our party of five made reservations at Hakkasan, located in the MGM Grand, for an upscale dining experience. We ordered appetizers to share, which included the Hakka Steamed Dim Sum Platter (aka the best dumplings in the world) and the most unique display of shrimp any of us had ever seen. For dessert, we treated ourselves to the Lemon Pot which will push any lemon lover over the edge. And to mirror their impressive menu of professionally-crafted entrées and à la carte items, they also have an excellent assortment of specialty cocktails. Overall, our dining endeavors at Hakkasan were a success and our waitress made the experience even better, with her friendly service and helpful suggestions. Turns out nice people, like us Nebraskans, are in Vegas too! Hakkasan Nightclub | hakkasannightclub.com | (702) 891-3838 After indulging ourselves at the restaurant, we heard the dance floor calling our names. Lucky for us, the fourth floor was all the farther we had to travel to bust a move. Convenience is such a luxury, especially when you’re wearing high heels. As we ascended up to the main nightclub, the nightlife element of Hakkasan began to show its face—its sweet, beautiful face. The energy was contagious! This amphitheater-style club is equipped with an elevated DJ booth, a large full-service bar, and VIP seating areas that surround the dance floor. Between the rockin’ music, walls with floor-to-ceiling LED screens, and a visually stunning two-story water feature, the nightclub at Hakkasan will have all your senses tingling. A.Y.C.E. Buffet | palms.com/ayce-buffet | (866) 9427770 After a late night out on the town, our only hope for a quick 360 recovery was food and a lot of it. Thankfully, we found ourselves at A.Y.C.E. Buffet which recently opened up its doors in the Palms Casino & Resort. A.Y.C.E., which stands for All-You-Can-Eat (so clever!), features made-from-scratch recipes and various worldly cooking methods. It isn’t like other buffets where you go around and scoop the food onto your plate. Almost everything was pre-portioned into perfectly-sized servings in cute containers. We recommend the eggs Benedict and their French onion soup— holy delicious! Our group also enjoyed their shrimp cocktails and New England clam boil with tasty crawfish. In addition, their meat selection with offerings like Moroccan lamb and smoked turkey wings, was definitely on point. All they were missing was some good ol’ Nebraska beef… but we won’t hold that against them. The buffet also had great vegan and vegetarian options. For just under $20 per person, this top-notch eatery not only offers all the food your heart desires, but also bottomless mimosas on Sundays! That’s right—all you can eat AND all you can drink. Needless to say, A.Y.C.E. Buffet is a must when you’re in Vegas.

WOW | WOW-vegas.com | (855) 234-7469 Well, the name ‘WOW’ is pretty fitting because we literally said it at least hundred times during the show. WOW is an internationallyacclaimed production full of flips and tricks that will blow your mind. This is definitely a show we’d recommend seeing while in Vegas. This 90-minute production at the Rio features about 30 artists who dance and fly across the stage in conjunction with 3D-multimedia projections, holograms, fast-paced choreography, and great theatrical lighting. And the intimate, 180-degree theatrical set-up allows the audience to feel like they’re right up in the action. There was a comical pirate skit that our group really enjoyed, along with a “dancing in the rain” number that had us on the edge of our seats. The shock hasn’t completely worn off yet, but you can’t expect anything less from a Vegas production. Sushi Roku | innovativedining.com/restaurants/ sushiroku | (702) 733-7373 Our experience at Sushi Roku was full of many pleasant surprises. This was a last minute addition to our itinerary, but ended up being one of the highlights of our trip! The restaurant is located on the third level of the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace, overlooking the Strip. Everything we ordered was yummy, but the Chilean Sea Bass literally melted in our mouths. It’s amazing how much emphasis was put on presentation—not just on the food platters, the drinks too! We ordered the prettiest cocktail any of us had ever seen. It was a seductive shade of pink, garnished with a purple flower, and infused with dry ice that caused white smoke to ooze over the edge of the glass. It was mesmerizing! The outstanding hospitality and guest experience offered by Sushi Roku definitely didn’t go unnoticed. And we’re happy to report that the prices were comparable to those of sushi joints here in Nebraska, which made it even better! It’s safe to say, Sushi Roku is definitely worth a visit on your next trip to Las Vegas. ABSINTHE | www.tix4.com | (877) 849-4868 For our final outing, we were able to find tickets on Tix4.com to ABSINTHE at Caesars Palace, an adult combination of comedy and circus performance presented by Spiegelword. We recommend Tix4Tonight to all our friends and family—it’s the #1 ticket seller in Vegas, offering discounts on top shows as well as tours and attractions. As far as shows go, ABSINTHE has earned itself quite the reputation. This burlesque-like production is guaranteed to make you gasp, either because you’re offended or because you just saw the most amazing acrobatic stunt you’ve ever seen. One of our favorite moments included a hand-to-hand balancing act in which two men portrayed as bankers, wearing suits and ties, showed off their super-human strength. And we can’t forget about the host/producer of the show The Gazillionaire—let’s just say he isn’t afraid to hurt anyone’s feelings. This show isn’t for everyone but we definitely enjoyed the theatrics. (Side note: Tix4.com also has a Vegas Dining Card featuring more than 70 of the most popular restaurants, including bars and buffets. And not only is the Vegas Dining Card valid for 7 days, it will save you hundreds on food and cocktails for your entire trip!)

Until next time, Vegas! It was a pleasure, as always.

Residential Remodeling Have you been thinking about taking on a home remodeling project lately? Is there something that really needs to be done or that you feel would significantly add to the enjoyment of your personal or family living space? Or do you want to improve energy efficiency, upgrade with smart home features, or do any of the other on-trend home updates you’ve been seeing or hearing about? Enhancing the look and/or function of the exterior and/or interior of one’s home can mean a lot of different things as there is so much potential in any given residential property. Roofing, Gutters, Siding & Windows These are the main elements of a home’s façade, with both function and aesthetics being important aspects to consider. If one or the other is lacking, a home improvement project is presumably in your future, and then you’ll end up with the best of both worlds. If not simply due to age, oftentimes repair or replacement is needed to fix damage to these specific parts of a home caused by the myriad of severe weather that’s commonplace in our region. Sometimes this is clearly apparent right away while other times it can go unnoticed, only later to find that it’s what has led to a more serious problem.

Granting Dreams of Home Ownership

“Many insurance companies only allow one year after a storm hits and a home has been damaged to file a claim and repair the damage,” explains Matt Preister with Xcel Roofing. “In Nebraska and the Midwest, there’s always the potential for storms to cause damage to our homes, especially the roofing and siding. We love our communities and keep watch over them Xtensively, weather systems included. Living in your home long-term and raising your family under that roof does go far beyond Matt Preister protecting it from the elements of the Xcel Roofing weather, though, and we take that to heart at Xcel Roofing.” With that in mind, he advises on the following two major benefits of maintaining a good roofing system and exterior, including your siding and windows. Enhanced Energy Efficiency: “Shingles are not just shingles! The same goes for siding and windows, too. There are so many choices on the market now. It’s advantageous to work with a consultant who will educate you on the differences and on the new and most innovative materials. In the case of shingles, they’ll be able to direct you to the ones that deliver on the promise of reflecting sunlight rather than absorbing it. With siding and windows, minimizing energy loss is a focal point of the products and installation process too. This will help keep your HVAC system from having to work so hard and save energy dollars for your family. But as we think about energy efficiency, let’s absolutely not ever forget about ventilation! As part

Now is the perfect time to buy or remodel your dream home.

of Xcel’s roof replacement, we make it a point to go into the attic to confirm that rising warm air can easily escape. Many times this gets missed in the process, which is again why it is important to work with a professional who will make it a point to walk you through the entire process. Using best-in-class shingles and roofing systems like what Xcel Roofing uses, Owens Corning, and earning a Preferred Contractors status, our systems come with a manufacturer 50-year problem-free performance and 5-year labor warranty. This gives homeowners peace of mind knowing that a reputable company that is firmly established in the community is there to take care of them.”

that remodeling projects can take on a life of their own. Even the most seasoned remodeler can run into issues that would be nearly impossible to anticipate at the onset. To keep the frustration level under control and credit card from heating up, we recommend the following:

Amazing Curb Appeal: “As homeowners, we all appreciate that a good weather-tight roof, siding, and windows can not only prevent extensive, expensive water damage but also lend a boost to the outside appearance of your home and neighborhood. Specifically regarding roofing, from the different aesthetics that can be created with the various colors and styles to the new Impact-Resistant highend materials to replace the wood shake shingles, Xcel Roofing’s consultants will help you with selection to achieve your desired look and function. Different homes feature different roof lines and exteriors, but seeing cracked, curled, or even missing shingles is not doing your home any favors and won’t win you any ‘Neighbor of the Year’ awards. A reputable company should be able to guide you through the entire process of a roof replacement from the day you decide on the colors and styles that will complement your home through the final day of installation. Providing you with digital tools to show you what a certain shingle with a certain siding color looks like might just make that process easier for you. You should not only get a new roof that performs well, but has the pride of the homeowner in looks.”

• Shop for project materials ahead of time, not as you go.

Jim Harding with Xcel Roofing also weighs in, offering the following tips: “If you’re a fan of home improvement shows or if you have already attempted your own DIY work, you’ll quickly learn

• Plan out your project by creating a step by step process you can follow.

• Hire a pro if it involves an advanced skill level or special tools to do it right.

• Get a permit from your local municipality if required. Don’t perform unpermitted work. • Expect that during the process things can go wrong and changes may need to be made. • Budget what you think it will cost and add in a 15-20% contingency. • Make sure your pro has proper insurance coverages. Ask your own agent for help with this. • Get references if you hire a pro. Get help and suggestions if you are doing it yourself. As for the first part of that last bullet point, homeowners first and foremost need to check out a company’s reputation and make sure that customer service is their first priority. Does their vision for service and company standards meet or exceed your expectations? Look at the information provided by the Better Business Bureau to

make sure that this is a company that has been accredited and has good reviews. Finally, understand what your own goals are in wanting to tackle remodeling projects on your home. How long do you plan to live in the home? Are you remodeling it for sale? Are you fixing a functional problem or a cosmetic defect? If this is your ‘forever home’ and you want it to reflect your own unique style then feel free to go crazy with color and design. It’s your home! However, if your goal is to sell the house in the near future, try to keep the cosmetic changes neutral and any structural repairs permitted and documented.” He concludes, “The American dream of homeownership is still alive and well in most communities. The purchase of a home remains the single largest investment most people make in their lifetime. Like any investment, it can grow in value or it can simply take your money. The best dollars you will ever invest in your home are in maintenance items. They’re really boring for most people--furnace filters, gutter cleaning, air conditioner checks, exterior caulking, the list goes on and on. Maintaining your home properly really sets the stage for some fantastic remodeling opportunities. Otherwise, it’s just lipstick on a pig. Happy remodeling everyone!” Interior Design & Upgrades Moving inside your home, there’s probably plenty of things you love – and a few things that fall in the “left a lot to be desired” category. What are those misses for you and what can you do to resolve those issues? Once you’ve answered those questions, you’ve now got a list of your wish list for future home improvement projects. Now it’s up to you to decide what’s feasible and the order of importance. You’ll want to take a look at functionality and how the room(s) could better fit your needs, which could necessitate a bigger kitchen or living room, more storage space, or extra bathrooms. Kitchens and master bathrooms are two areas where investing in remodeling to update them is well worth it. When you think about your daily routine and what gets the most use in a home by your family or when you’re entertaining, it’s those areas. They are used daily, need to be functional, and you want them to look and feel nice. For the same reason, an updated kitchen and master bath are going to be attractive to buyers when it comes time to sell, providing a significant return on your investment on top of your personal enjoyment while living there. Widely considered to be the “oldest trick in the book,” simply changing the color of the walls can transform the look and feel of any room in your home. Do the walls match your personality and lifestyle? If not, change it up! Some prefer cozy, some want clean and simple or sleek and modern, some want rich tones for a luxurious feel, and some go for bright colors to match their disposition or active nature. Your color palette and the tones in it will make a big difference in the feel of the room. “When considering your home remodeling project, picking a color palette that fits your lifestyle, needs, and wants can be overwhelming,” says Mike Gerst with Gerst Painting Inc. “Let us help you unlock the Psychology of Color with our top color picks! First, cool grays continue to be a leader in residential remodels. Gray is classic and a perfect backdrop for any color combination. Second, beige is another timeless pick. It continues to be elegant year after year. Painting your room in beige tones help create serenity and flow throughout your home. Visiting us online at www.gerstcontracting.com is a great starting point!” Today, there are new techniques beyond just a couple of fresh coats of paint to explore as well. You’re probably familiar with the accent wall, which creates dimension and allows you to play with color and tie in the flooring, furniture, fixtures, and art. With the same goal in mind, you’d be amazed at the different designs and textures that can be created with paint. “People are incorporating impact walls in every room in their house. The master bedroom and bathroom, dining room, rooms with fireplaces, and powder rooms are the areas of the home where this is especially popular,” says Thomas Rajkovich with Thomas Faux Finishing. “Grays and neutrals look like they’re here to stay, but they don’t have to be boring. Glass bead and metallic looks are everywhere in Europe and on the coasts, and it’s been exciting that clients are asking for these here in Nebraska Thomas Rajkovich too. Fine faux finishing is one of the quickest Thomas Faux Finishing and most economical ways to update and transform your home without knocking down walls. Decorative finishes, which is like custom art for your walls, have come a long way too. JULY 2018 Strictly Business 37

Whether your style is contemporary or more traditional, you can’t make a mistake choosing a metallic, glass bead, or even a finish with foil. The new wave of decorative finishes fit any style. If you’re going through the time and expense of remodeling, try something new with color, texture, and light! Don’t worry if you don’t have a designer. We have a design consultant to show you our extensive portfolio, which makes it easy to find what suits you best. During the planning stages, clients are able to see a digital recreation of what the finished room will look like so there are no surprises.” Many choose to update flooring and decorative accents at the same time to tie everything together. You may just need to have the floor’s refinished, or you may be looking into installation of new carpet, hardwood, laminate, tile, or stone flooring. For your kitchen or bathroom remodeling or for updated flooring, the professionals at Modern Concepts Tile can do incredible custom tile work.

“From the size of the tiles to the material and even really neat textures that have been coming out in tile products, there’s so much you can do with design,” says Danny Reynolds with Modern Concepts Tile. “The color palette, finishes, accents and patterning selections are all things to take into consideration. Color and texture contrast is important, as many opt for accent walls or different tile for the walls versus the flooring. You can achieve an endless number of different looks when you add in accent tile or mosaics and grout color.

Strictly Business JULY 2018

Combine those with the other design elements, such as built-in shelving, heated flooring, frameless or no glass at all and zero-entry walk-in showers for master baths, and you’ve got yourself a plan. All of these things together are what really makes each project unique. Custom bathrooms and kitchens are definitely a selling point for a house, and they are a conversation piece too. In areas where guests in your home will naturally gravitate towards or be using, interior design makes a favorable and lasting impression and quite possibly could be a source of inspiration. While things like Pinterest and touring homes on the market are still the most popular ways to get a good idea of what you like and what you don’t, time and time again we have people tell us they saw something at a friend or family member’s house that they want to recreate. We love to have people bring us their ideas and show them the possibilities. There truly are so many amazing things you can do in a home with tile work that delivers on beauty and function!” Finally, there’s the integration of technology, which can also make a dramatic difference in the aesthetic and functional qualities of a home. Doug Dushan with Echo Systems advises, “At Echo Systems Experience Center, we have the pleasure of blowing people’s minds on a daily basis. Designed as a multi-million dollar home, we feature the single best facility in the world to showcase where residential technology is at today, with special emphasis on the aesthetic integration of said technology.

Doug Dushan

For example, our most popular renovation Echo Systems requests have to do with making primary television locations look more appealing. There are many aesthetic

alternatives to a large black triangle with a plastic bezel, which is a look we all know but have resigned ourselves to. Instead, that television can disappear into a framed mirror when turned off. Or, a scrolling piece of artwork when not in use. Often, visitors will ask what can be done in existing homes, seemingly skeptical that any of the cool stuff we showed them can be done without building from scratch. Our staff is always excited to explain that putting in intelligent wiring infrastructure can and should be done, whether it’s new construction or retrofit. It is often easier than people assume. Truly, when it comes to home technology, the biggest obstacle to homeowners is lack of knowledge about what is really available to them. Often, assumptions are based on old information. Occasionally, we will get visitors in the showroom who have just finished a remodel and are outright angry with their contractor for not telling them about what they see in our Experience Center. In summary, come see what is available at a professional technology showroom and make an informed decision about what is right for you.

Update Your Home to

Perfection!

Additionally, infrastructure planning is critical for taking advantage of the conveniences technology is bringing to our lives. Not to mention it is increasingly expected as a hoped-for item in the resale of a home. By planning and installing a comprehensive wiring infrastructure, a homeowner can embark on a path of enhancements at their own preferred pace. Specifically in existing homes, I encourage people to take advantage of even the smallest remodeling project to then run the proper wires in their homes. If you are having any drywall patching or painting done, that is the perfect time to carry out a plan to wire your home. Patching drywall is relatively inexpensive, but what you can do with a competently wired home will advance your enjoyment of it for many years. It remains a very common, and critical, misconception that running wires in an existing home is too invasive or difficult to be worthwhile. This is almost always not the case. Even if the budget won’t allow for a large technology purchase, planning for the future in any endeavor always bears fruit. This case is not different.”

Project Planning & Execution Diving right in without a well thought out plan is the last thing you want to do unless it happens to be something relatively simple and straightforward, and even then, proceed with caution. There aren’t an abundance of nightmarish and “comedy of errors” experiences during home remodeling projects out there, especially ones of the DIY variety, for no good reason. Instead of thinking it won’t happen to you, take it as a sign that you better know your stuff or know someone who does, be willing to suffer the consequences of any mistakes you might make on your own, or just hire a professional. Particularly for major projects, especially ones that involve the infrastructure or major systems such as plumbing, HVAC, and electrical, the latter is probably a wise move.

• We work with you to make your home remodel stress free and to perfection!

A great starting point for planning your next remodeling project is to take a good look at your home and picture what you can and can’t live in or with. No one wants to be uncomfortable in their own home or to see something they hate day in and day out. The big thing to consider is two-fold. First, what do you love about your home? Second, what would you like to fix? You may come to find out that simply changing your décor or finishes is what’s needed. On the other hand, you may realize that it’s going to be a more in-depth process to turn the things you don’t like into things you love about your home. Once you’ve pinpointed what takes priority, if you have the funds, time and/or resources to remodel your home, you can work towards figuring out what would be a much better fit for you. With remodeling projects, it’s important to know your budget going into the consultation with a professional. With this information, they’ll be able to make best suggestions for products and design that fall within that range. It’s similar to shopping for a home – if you fall in love with a $60K project, then find out you only have $20K to spend, there’s a feeling of disappointment that overshadows the

It’s also important to decide who will be involved in the project and to what extent. A good starting point is being honest with yourself about the amount of sweat equity you’re willing and able to put into the project. If you’re capable of doing the entire project or even just certain parts of it and know exactly what you’re getting into, go for it and save some money! You may simply be lacking a few things to get the job done, and if that includes tools, you can easily rent them at Honeyman Rent-All instead of buying them outright or hiring someone else for the job for that reason alone. However, if there’s any uncertainty, it’s wise to leave it to a professional. Especially on a big project, it’s worth the money for the expertise you’re getting. No matter the amount, it’s probably a lot of money to you, so the assurance that it is getting done correctly, accomplishes your goals, and meets your needs is pretty important. If it’s determined that you’ll be obtaining financing for the project, Jennifer Coyle with American National Bank offers the following advice: “With any type of financing, you will need to gather all income and asset documentation; however, on a remodel job, you would need to have the scope of the work being done, contractor, and at least an estimated bid to determine the loan amount. We can always look at ‘What if?’ scenarios with a budget that will be no Jennifer Coyle more than X amount of dollars to start out American National Bank and evaluate the possibilities from there.

entire experience.

We have three different types of renovation loans, each with its own restrictions. Then there’s the option to purchase a home and incorporate the improvements all in one loan using the value after it has been improved, which meets the needs of our clients who want to buy a home that needs to be updated. Any of these allow our clients to do minor updates all the way up to major upgrades - luxury, health and safety, livability, and structural. Kitchens and bathrooms do continue to offer the biggest bang for your dollar. Speaking of which, it’s important to address one of the biggest misconceptions – that the work that is being completed will be dollar for dollar towards the home’s value. That is most often not the case. For those who already own the property, I would suggest having a market analysis done ahead of time using current conditions and then again afterward factoring in the improved conditions. The realtor can give a close estimate of what the increased value potentially may be based on the upgrades. The same is true for a buyer looking to purchase and do the remodeling all in one loan. When looking at remodeling, oftentimes the homeowner intends to stay at their current residence for a while, so there’s the value of their enjoyment of the surroundings. But you also need to take into account how long it will take to recoup the funds being invested into the property, if you’re overbuilding for the area, and most importantly, if the changes being done will hinder the resale when you are ready.” Hopefully all of this information has left you feeling inspired and eager to take on your next home improvement project! When in doubt, it never hurts to ask a pro and lucky for you, they can easily be found here in the Omaha Metro area. Be sure to keep in mind that if you are remodeling your home with the hope of living in it for an extended period of time, it’s wise to approach your project with the intention of getting exactly what you want (budget-permitting, of course). However, you may decide that it’s best to approach home improvements a bit differently if you have the intention of putting yours on the market and make some compromises accordingly. Be sure to check out our Resell Remodeling feature story in the October issue if that’s more of what you’re going for with your upcoming project!

Supporting Non-Profits As businesspeople, while working hard towards our goals, we also know that we play an important part in making our community a better place. We are invested in those efforts because it allows us to build our businesses as well as raise our families, cultivate friendships, and lead happy, healthy and fulfilling lives. Here in the greater Omaha metropolitan area, you’ll find many people working together to care for one another, to give a hand up to those in need for the greater good, to protect our environment, and to make our city the best place to live and work it can possibly be. In a community that understands the importance of giving back and places a lot of value in it, you’ll also find it to be a big part of corporate culture here in small and large businesses alike. Supporting our local non-profit organizations is something that we can all do to give back individually - and to truly make a difference collectively. An excellent example of the power of philanthropy at the local level just happened a couple months ago. For the sixth year, the Omaha Metro community came together for Omaha Gives! on May 23 and showed their support in a big way. With over 50,000 donations to almost a thousand different non-profit organizations, the total raised came in at $7.4 million. Those funds are going to change lives for those here in our community, and is a powerful statement of what can be accomplished when we all come together for the greater good. But it doesn’t stop there. While not diminishing the fact that these funds are greatly appreciated and put to good use throughout the year, it’s important to be mindful that monetary donations aren’t the only way you can give back. There are a variety of ways to contribute to the valuable work that our non-profits are doing day in and day out, all year long. While funds will often be allocated to certain areas that are determined to be of importance, there are other needs that will arise throughout the year. This may be a donation of items or hosting a donation drive, volunteering, sponsorships, participating in special events, helping to raise awareness, and so on.

Strictly Business JULY 2018

As individuals, whether you offer your time, talents, or prefer to donate money or items to the cause, there’s always a need that can be met with whatever you have to give. Businesses also have the opportunity to encourage their employees to get involved, which unites everyone together for a worthy cause. Many companies incentivize employees to volunteer, participate in fundraising and awareness events, or volunteer together as a group; there are plenty of ways to get involved that can be tailored to fit the needs and goals of your organization. Likewise, as we always encourage consumers to be conscious of their purchasing decisions, staying informed and supporting the businesses that make an effort to support non-profits in the community is something we can all do. Leveraging resources to further reinforce those actions has a ripple effect, as does setting an example, spreading your passion for a cause, and getting others involved. Our local non-profits are the source of initiatives that are focused solely on helping to make an impact on the lives of those who live in our community—to make our tiny part of the world a better place for all. Oftentimes their reach extends beyond that to make an impact at the state, national, and/or global level. These organizations also create jobs in our community, allowing many people to fulfill their greater purpose by doing what they love while touching lives and truly making a difference. At Strictly Business, the focus of our work has always been supporting the growth and prosperity of our local business community. That said, we feel strongly about supporting our local non-profit organizations too. The two really do go hand-in-hand. By shining a light on all of the different ones here in our community, it is our hope that we are encouraging our audience to get involved with the cause(s) they are passionate about supporting. So without further ado, we’ve highlighted some of our local non-profit organizations so that you have the opportunity to learn more about them and take action!

Angels Among Us provides financial assistance to families whose children are battling pediatric cancer. Any family living in or being treated in Nebraska is eligible to apply. Once approved, families are provided with $500 a month for 18 months to help them stay financially stable during treatment. Funds are paid directly to the creditor, which ensures that funds are used for their intended purpose. When a child is diagnosed with cancer, a family’s life as they know it comes to an abrupt halt. Unfortunately, their monthly expenses do not. Since 2006, Angels Among Us has assisted over 350 families with $1.5 million in support. Will you join us as we fight to keep families stable? Gifts of any amount are welcome and encouraged. There is strength in numbers. There is also hope, help, and monetary relief.

For over 18 years, Domesti-PUPS (www. domesti-pups.org) has been supporting people in our local, regional and national communities through the assistance of animals. From therapy dogs in the classroom motivating children to excel in their learning environment to pet therapy visitations in nursing homes, hospitals, and assisted living centers, Domesti-PUPS pet therapy teams bring a bit of brightness through their furry encounters. Our service dog teams provide increased independence when paired with a disabled partner. These highly-skilled canines can turn on lights, provide balance and mobility, retrieve dropped items, bring a bottle of water from a refrigerator, respond to medical emergencies such as responding to a seizure or alerting to a diabetic high or low, and open doors both literally and figuratively. Some even provide lifesaving measures for their disabled partners.

The American Heart Association and American Stroke Association is devoted to saving people from two of our nation’s top killers, heart disease (No. 1) and stroke (No. 5). Powered by millions of volunteers nationwide, the Association’s goal is to improve the cardiovascular health of Americans by 20% by 2020, while reducing deaths from heart disease and stroke by 20%. Currently, one person dies every 40 seconds from heart disease and stroke. Through events right here in Omaha like the Heart Walk, Go Red for Women Expo and Heart Ball, that startling statistic can change. For more information, visit www.heart.org/omaha.

The Metro Area Youth Foundation (MAYF) was formed in 2006 by a group of Omaha area Optimist Club members who wanted to do more for families and children experiencing cancer. This all-volunteer group recognized that many organizations have been formed to help fight cancer, but there were not many resources available to the families who were in the middle of the fight. The goal is to allow the families to focus on the children, not the money they owe by providing a short-term financial bridge. Many of these families were already struggling financially; a cancer diagnosis can often mean that only one parent can continue to work, adding to the burden. MAYF has been able to provide over 500 families a chance to keep the water and power on, rent to stay in their apartment, a mortgage payment to keep their home and a chance to keep life as stable and normal as possible. For more information about how you can get involved or donate to MAYF’s Childhood Cancer Campaign, visit SummerBashforCCC.org or please call (402) 740-5158 or email SummerBash@cox.net.

As the region’s cornerstone for grief support, Grief’s Journey provides free peer support groups, family days, and camps as well as professional training, education, and consultation throughout Nebraska and Iowa.

Why BBB Matters Today The Better Business Bureau (BBB; www.bbb.org) has been assisting consumers and businesses since 1912. It is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing trust in the marketplace. In 2017, BBB provided nearly 225 million instances of service to businesses, charities and the general public. BBB has Business Profiles on more than 4.7 million businesses and Charity Reports on over 11,000 charities, all available for free at bbb.org. Today, BBB serving Nebraska, South Dakota, The Kansas Plains and Southwest Iowa is supported by approximately 10,000 Accredited Businesses that have voluntarily committed to adhere to BBB’s Standards of Trust. BBB offers services to both businesses and consumers by creating a community of trustworthy businesses through accreditation, setting standards for trust, encouraging and supporting ethical business practices, celebrating community role models and denouncing substandard marketplace behavior. BBB does not compare businesses to each other, but rather evaluates them against its standards – and BBB’s standards clearly speak to the character and competence of an organization. Youth Emergency Services (YES) is the only nonprofit in Omaha with the sole mission to help homeless and nearly homeless in our community. Established in 1972, Santa Monica has been providing long-term residential ser vices to thousands of c hemicallydependent women, partnering with them on their journey to recovery. The program relies on the disciplines of the twelve step program of Alcoholics Anonymous® while incorporating mental health and trauma treatment along with life skills. Santa Monica provides food, shelter, rehabilitative counseling, job acquisition guidance, and re-socialization training. Santa Monica provides a Halfway House program, followed by a ¾ way house program and transitional apartment living. This approach to step-down levels of care for the women, provide a more holistic continuum of care. These services will give the women more support as they transition back into the community. Donations are always valued at Santa Monica and the women benefit from toiletries, clothing, and paper products.

YES offers a full continuum of care to ensure all youth receive the support they need, no matter their situation. This includes a Street Outreach Center, Emergency Shelter, Transitional Living Program and Maternity Home. Throughout these programs, we offer case management, job readiness classes, group activities, support for the LGBTQ+ community, and specialized services for trafficked victims. To ensure youth are successful once they leave our care, youth in YES› programs are required to set short and long term goals, be enrolled in school, have a job, or both; and do community service. The Nebraska Wildlife Federation (NEWF) is a statewide non-profit organization dedicated to the preser vation and protection of Nebraska’s wildlife and habitat. We promote this through clean energy, conser vation far ming, growing certified wildlife habitats, and education. NEWF co-authored the Husker Power Plan (with the help of committee members from Nebraska conservation groups), which we hope the three major utilities in Nebraska will use as a template to increase their use of renewable energy and lowering their carbon footprint. This will not only benefit wildlife and habitat but humans as well. Please go to huskerpowerplan.org for further reference. NEWF has also been very busy developing and implementing monarch/pollinator gardens throughout the Lincoln area, mainly around schools, recreation areas, and churches. As we all know, humans cannot survive without pollinators. NEWF encourages everyone to create their own wildlife habitat in their backyard. Or on their acreage. Or somewhere. You can have your wildlife habitat certified by the National Wildlife Federation, in conjunction with NEWF. Please go to our website for additional information: nebraskawildlife.org. We can always use assistance to amplify our message and efforts. Feel free to contact us at (402) 477-1008 or nebraskawildlife@ windstream.net.

Childhood cancer is severely underfunded and misunderstood. Cancer is the #1 cause of death by disease among children, yet only 4% of the National Cancer Institute’s budget is dedicated to researching childhood cancer. And while over 60% of adult cancer research is paid for by big pharmaceutical companies, they don’t even give 1% to childhood cancer research due to low profits. A cure for childhood cancer will be funded by small, private groups like Sammy’s Superheroes Foundation. Sammy’s is a Nebraskabased 501c3 non-profit which funds researchers who are doing groundbreaking, innovative work that will lead to modern treatments that will save and have less debilitating side effects for these sweet little fighters. Sammy’s main mission is to raise funds for research, but also to comfort families in the hardest times of their lives. Join the fight, visit www. The Fellowship of Christian Athletes’ (FCA) purpose and passion is “Advancing the Gospel, in sport, through transformational leaders.” In order to do this, we must adhere to our strategy of “to and through the coach.” In other words, disciple coaches to be disciple-makers. Billy Graham once said, “A coach will impact more young people in a year than the average person does in a lifetime.” We’ve seen this to be true. The average coach spends approximately 1,000 hours of face-to-face time with a student-athlete each year. We want these coaches to feel equipped and empowered in their engagement with their athletes, prepared to be there for their students, not just on the field or in the locker room, but in daily life. In order to accomplish this, we need staff, volunteers and financial partners. We would be honored if you would partner with us to make this happen. For more information, visit nebraskafca.org.
