LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

PAIGE ZUTAVERN - Omaha/Lincoln - President (402) 730-0096 | Paige@StrictlyBusinessOmaha.com

Having a Positive Attitude With cold weather well underway, having a positive attitude about leaving our houses can be challenging. The freezing temperatures and road conditions make us want to stay warm and safe, which is highly important. However, it is also important to keep a positive mindset as we venture out to work as well as to shop and support local businesses that have remained open through the storms.

Additionally, many members of our community are in need of blankets and winter gear to keep warm. When purchasing these items for ourselves, a thoughtful gesture is to consider buying locally and, if possible, getting extras to support those in our community facing challenges. Many of our local nonprofits are in need of donations and support so that they can help countless in our community. By extending our support to local businesses and nonprofits for such essential goods and considering the needs of others, we not only contribute to the local economy, but also to the well-being of our neighbors.

Especially during these cold times, it is important to create a sense of community.

Having a positive attitude about shopping locally is more than just buying things; it’s about helping our community and supporting local businesses as well as our neighbors. Especially during these cold times, it is important to create a sense of community. As temperatures drop, there may be community members facing additional challenges, and our collective efforts to shop locally can have a positive ripple effect. By choosing nearby businesses, we can help keep more people safe and warm this winter. Take, for example, the importance of stocking up on groceries. It’s not just about ensuring our families are well taken care of; it’s also about reinforcing the connections within our community. By choosing local stores for our essential needs, we not only support nearby businesses, but also foster a communal spirit. In addition to purchasing groceries for ourselves, it’s important to think of others in the community that might be struggling to produce a hot meal for themselves or their families.

In consideration of our neighbors, though nobody likes shoveling snow, look around while you are outside and see if there is anyone that might need your help like an elderly neighbor or a single mom. Consider offering to help with snow removal, and if you aren’t capable of removing snow, consider hiring a local business to do it for you. When we choose to shop at nearby stores and work with local businesses, we’re putting money back into our local economy, which is good for everyone. Local shop owners give us special attention and make us feel like part of a community, so as customers, let’s do the same for them. It feels good to know that our choices are making our community a better place. Let Strictly Business help you lock in your status as THE EXPERT in your industry, utilizing print, the internet and social media. Find out how by contacting Paige at (402) 466-3330.

BUSINESS NEWS The Stuffed Olive Celebrates Ribbon Cutting January 10

Meet the Designers: Omaha Fashion Week Spring 2024

The Stuffed Olive held a ribbon cutting for their Grand Opening on January 10 at 1140 Capitol Ave. in the Downtown Capitol District. It is next door to Roxxy at 1150 Capitol Ave., which held their Ribbon Cutting at the same time.

Omaha Fashion Week (OFW) is inspired by an amazing lineup of Emerging, F eatured and Headlining Designers who will be showcasing on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights of their Spring 2024 AUDACIOUS Season. OFW Spring showcases are scheduled for February 21-24 at Omaha Design Center. Tickets are currently on sale.

The Stuffed Olive was originally founded in 2004 at the Blackhawk Hotel in Cedar Falls, IA. It began as a Martini Bar with a great menu featuring plenty of great concoctions to choose from. In 2005, tapas (small plates) were added to the menu and the martini menu continued to grow. The original Stuffed Olive enjoyed many good years at the Hotel but finally closed on January 1, 2019, to make way for hotel upgrades and renovations. It wasn’t long before it became known that it needed to be reopened as soon as possible. After months of planning and renovations, The Stuffed Olive re-opened in September of 2019 with a brand-new tapas menu and a polished martini menu. Now, there are over 100 martinis to choose from and some of the best chef prepared food that the venues have offered. The new Stuffed Olive is full of soft leather seating in a modern, luxurious, yet minimalistic atmosphere. They often hear from guests that the Stuffed Olive is their favorite place and a much-needed place the Downtown was missing. They think it just might be yours too. For more information about The Stuffed Olive, visit www. thestuffedolive.com/omaha.

Omaha Empowerment Breakfast Announces Thor Schrock as February 2 Speaker Omaha Empowerment Breakfast is excited to announce Thor Schrock, Founder and President of the Schrock Innovations Computer Company, as their speaker for the February 2 networking event. He will be presenting on the topic: Achieving consistent growth in uncertain times: Using data, history and human nature to plan, execute and succeed. Celebrating its 25th year in business, Thor uses his background in process design and customer service to create compelling and unique offerings in the consumer and business IT marketplace. Schrock Business exploded on the scene in 2023 to fill a growing need for specialized business IT support. The division achieved a 537% increase over the previous year and is projected to double those numbers in 2024. Thor’s business philosophy is to absorb as much information as possible and apply that information to the organization’s systems and plans in order to plot a course of action that maximizes the probability of achieving specific goals. Growing up near Dundee, Thor graduated from Omaha North High and attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. Like many doctors and attorneys, he spent seven years at UNL. Like many tech entrepreneurs, he treated UNL like a community college, dropping out a few credits short of several degrees to apply his ideas in the “real world.” The Omaha Empowerment Breakfast is a once-a-month nonmembership networking event. This worthwhile event is well attended, and it happens on the first Friday of every month. For more information, visit omahaempowermentbreakfast.org. 6 Strictly Business FEBRUARY 2024

New Entertainment Complex Coming to Northwest Omaha: Chicken N Pickle Chicken N Pickle, an indoor/outdoor entertainment complex with a restaurant, sports bar, pickleball courts and a variety of yard games, has announced Omaha as the site of its newest location and it’s first in Nebraska. Chicken N Pickle will build a complex at Tranquility Commons, a 55acre development at 120th and Fort in Northwest Omaha. Chicken N Pickle plans to break ground on the 55-acre multi-level Omaha property in 2024, opening to the public in 2025. "Chicken N Pickle is the ideal complement to our youth multisports complex and tournament facility at Tranquility Park and the neighboring Tranquility Commons development," said Mayor Jean Stothert. "It will enhance Tranquility as a destination for sports entertainment and recreation."

Thirst Tea Café specializes in Bubble Tea, which is the popular name given to the variety of refreshing flavored fruit teas and milk teas served cold or hot with tapioca balls that you suck up through a fat straw. Its like a snack and a drink at the same time! Many refer to the tapioca balls as "boba" or "pearls" and then others just call it "bubbles." But the true origins of the name "bubble tea" comes from the frothy bubbles that appear when the drinks are shaken during preparation.

Established in Kansas City in 2016, Chicken N Pickle is a wildly popular destination for families, young adults and corporate gatherings. The company has since expanded to Wichita, Kansas; San Antonio, Texas; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Overland Park, Kansas; Grand Prairie, Texas; Grapevine, Texas; Glendale, Arizona and St. Charles, Missouri. Seven more locations have been announced or are under development, including Webster, Texas; Allen, Texas; Henderson, Nevada; Thornton, Colorado; Parker, Colorado; Fishers, Indiana and Omaha.

It’s not only tea that Thirst Tea Café specialize in. They also expanded that to flavor-infused teas like their passion fruit jasmine tea blend to their matcha milky tea. Any of their drinks can be topped off with their signature topping of “boba,” which is tapioca shaped to a round and chewy consistency then sweetened to perfection, or any of their other choices of toppings available.

Chicken N Pickle will join the Tranquility Commons development as an anchor tenant alongside hotels, restaurants, retail and other community-building features designed to draw people in every day of the week. Tranquility Commons is located steps away from Omaha’s new premier youth multi-sport complex scheduled to be completed in 2026.

BRINGING YOUR BUILDINGS TO LIFE

How did you get started in the business? - I started in Telecom and Technology sales back in 2008. I knew a friend in the industry whose company was looking for a new rep, and I just happened to be looking for a new sales role. At the time, they wanted someone with limited experience in technology sales, but one who could focus on the sales relationships… I guess I was that guy. What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - The biggest challenge is trying to keep up with changing technology. Updates and new options are continuous. You must educate yourself timely and pivot when needed to continue to provide the customer with the most up to date information so they can make solid business decisions. Tell us a little about your family. - I’m a single dad of two, a 12-year-old boy and 10-year-old girl. We live in a combined home with my fiancé, who has two daughters, 20 and 11, as well as a 15-year-old son. Lots going on in our house… What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - Just trying to keep it all together with schedules of all of the activities the kids are in. What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - Travel… favorite spots tend to be anywhere near the ocean! What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - I’m a musician and have been playing in local bands since I was 13. What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - Be curious, not judgmental. If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? - Positive. I always try to stay in an upbeat frame of mind. If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? - Music and entertainment. I’ve always wanted to write a hit song. What local nonprofit organizations are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? - My church, St. John's Lutheran Church and Open Door Mission.

TONY Tony DeSalvo

HARMONIC HOSPITALITY GROUP Meet Tony DeSalvo, CEO of the Harmonic Hospitality Group. Tell us a little about your business. - The Harmonic Hospitality Group owns and operates nine restaurant/bars located in Iowa and Omaha. We just opened two fantastic concepts in the Capitol District. The venues are called The Stuffed Olive and Roxxy. How did you get started in the business? - I got my start in the hospitality industry when I was in high school. I put myself through college by working in restaurants and bars in the Chicago area. I loved it so much that I decided to make it my career! What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - My biggest challenge professionally was navigating the restaurant/bar group I was with through COVID-19. I felt a profound responsibility to my team members and the guests we served. We made it through as best as possible by ensuring as many of our team members were employed as possible and by keeping the community safe when they honored us with their patronage. What has been your most important achievement professionally? - My most significant professional achievement has been mentoring leaders in every organization I have participated in. Being a leader is a privilege with many responsibilities. No responsibility is more important than being a role model and teaching team members to be the best they can be. I take great pleasure in being a positive part of someone's life and career. Tell us a little about your family. - I am blessed to have a fantastic wife and son. I am so proud of them both for who they are and what they do, personally and professionally. They make me a better person, and I would not be where I am without them. What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - The most significant turning point was when I met my wife, Pamela. An equally important time in my personal life was becoming a father. A professional turning point was when I joined the Harmonic Hospitality Group. The ownership group truly believes in me, and I believe in them and what we can do together. I feel we can accomplish anything! What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - Spending time with my family and baking sourdough bread! I’ve had my sourdough starter for almost six years, and it’s still going strong! Who inspires you? - My mother was the biggest inspiration in my life. She was the strongest, most caring person I have ever met. She was truly a genuine person and helped shape my leadership style since I was young. I have had the opportunity to work with founders of several restaurant and bar concepts in my career. Each has influenced how I think and look at the hospitality industry in wonderfully different ways and how to think, act and lead like an entrepreneur. What local nonprofit organization are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? - Habitat for Humanity of Omaha. I feel their mission and the work they do is so very social and important to the community and individuals on a personal level.

The Stuffed Olive: Indulge in a lavish experience at The Stuffed Olive, where luxury meets culinary excellence in the heart of the Capitol District. With over 100 martinis to choose from, this venue holds a promising journey for cocktail enthusiasts. The Stuffed Olive serves martinis ranging from Snickers to Bourbon Latte, ensuring there is something for everyone. Having tried the Macaroon, August Moon, Bloody Mary and Almond Joy martinis as well as a classic Old Fashioned, there is no doubt that the delicious options are endless. They looked amazing, tasted amazing and had us wanting to try more. However, not only does The Stuffed Olive boast an extensive martini selection, but also features some of the finest chef-prepared food offerings, elevating your dining experience to new heights. We tried the Sweet Potato Waffle Fries, Bacon Wrapped Stuffed Jalapenos, Charcuterie Board, Coconut Shrimp, Steak Skewers, Sweet Mirin Salmon, Thai Chicken Flatbread and their notorious Fresh Stuffed Olives. From vibrant colors to thoughtful arrangements, the presentation of the food was nothing short of unbelievable. Despite the prefect presentation, we wasted no time digging in – and the flavors did not disappoint. Every bite was delicious, and each plate paired well with the next. The dishes were great for sharing and we all found joy in tasting a little of everything. Overall, our favorite Stuffed Olives were garlic, and we couldn’t stop gushing about the Thai Chicken Flatbread, Coconut Shrimp and the Charcuterie Board. The Thai Chicken Flatbread had a unique taste due to a peanut sauce, the Coconut Shrimp had a perfectly crisped breading and the Charcuterie Board had phenomenal dips as well as fruit and sliced meat that satisfied our different tastes. Food and martinis aside, The Stuffed Olive is a great venue for a night out. The ambiance is a seamless blend of modern luxury and minimalistic charm, with soft leather seating inviting patrons to relax and savor every moment. The art work on the walls is breathtaking, rotating on a daily basis so that you never see the same thing twice. The attention to detail in both design and artwork contributes to an atmosphere that is as aesthetically pleasing as it is inviting, making The Stuffed Olive a captivating destination for those seeking not just excellent food and martinis, but also a memorable and dynamic social setting. It’s not just a dining destination; it’s a much-needed haven, and after one visit, you might just find it becoming your favorite place.

American Heart Association Cheers Unanimous Support for Telecommunicator CPR The American Heart Association is thrilled that a lifesaving policy known as Telecommunicator CPR (T-CPR) was approved recently by the Nebraska Public Ser vice Commission. On December 12, 2023, the Nebraska Public Service Commission adopted revisions to the state dispatch training standards to require T-CPR. STEM Community Platform, Hosted by AIM Institute, Free Online Guide for STEM AIM Institute recognized the January 6 National Technology Day. National Technology Day reminds us of the profound impact technology has (and will continue to have) on our everyday lives. In Nebraska alone, we've seen an impressive 8.11% growth in STEM jobs from 2017-2022, but we haven't seen a parallel expansion in the tech workforce. There are over 900 job openings in the Computer and Mathematical Occupations sector, but there aren't enough skilled individuals to fill these positions. This shortage not only hampers the growth of individual businesses, but also holds back the state's overall economic potential. AIM Institute addresses this pressing shortage by shaping a more inclusive and tech-savvy future through education, career development and strategic partnerships. AIM Institute also worked with the Omaha STEM Ecosystem to build a free online resource for community members called the STEM Community Platform. This is an online resource guide of information and events about science, technology, engineering and math. Explore STEM careers and find local programming in one convenient location by visiting stemplatform.aiminstitute.org. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska Makes Surprise Holiday Contribution to Angels Among Us In early December, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska (BCBSNE) invited Angels Among Us to present to their leadership team about its mission, resulting in a $10,000 gift. “This holiday season, our management team wanted to support a local nonprofit who was making a difference across the state,” said Jeff Russell, BCBSNE’s President and CEO. “When we learned about Angels Among Us’ mission, it was an easy decision. At BCBSNE, we’re proud to support an organization that walks with families through life-changing diagnoses and treatment.” Partnerships such as this are critical to Angels Among Us’ mission to allow for additional support of pediatric cancer families in the community. In 2023, nearly 130 families were supported with over $630,000 in financial support. This work simply would not be able to be done without the support from generous donors, such as BCBSNE. Angels Among Us is a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to provide financial and emotional support to any family whose child is battling pediatric cancer living in or being treated in the state of Nebraska. Since 2006, nearly 700 families have been supported with nearly $5 million in financial support. A Thrilling Time ORLANDO KART CENTER

ORLANDO KART CENTER is truly a gem in the world of go-kart racing, and what

sets it apart is its commitment to family fun. As the longest race track in the area, this place caters to all ages, making it a fantastic destination for families. My husband Shayne and I went with our two adult boys and had a blast. We were looking for some adult fun, and since the boys like to race, we thought this would be a good way to spend an afternoon. Check-in was fast, so we were able to get on the track shortly after arriving. The boys won the first race, but Shayne came back and won the second. The turn of weather played a key role in Shayne’s victory. As rain began to fall while we were there, Shayne demonstrated exceptional skill in maneuvering a slicker track, ultimately securing the win. Despite the added challenge posed by the rain, everyone enjoyed the unique and exciting experience. The well-designed track, spanning 8/10 mile with curves and bumps, was really cool. The karts, reaching speeds of up to 45 MPH, ensured an adrenalinepumping ride. We definitely enjoyed the high-speed race on a track longer than others in the area. Racing against each other and fellow competitors at Orlando Kart Center was an absolute blast for us. Orlando Kart Center truly lived up to its reputation, offering a fantastic time for us as well as for other groups looking to enjoy some competitive racing. If you are looking for a vacation getaway to somewhere warm, we highly recommend checking out Orlando Kart Center. Whether you’re a seasoned karting enthusiast or families looking for a memorable and enjoyable day out, you are sure to have a blast. Don’t miss the chance to create unforgettable moments with your loved ones on this fantastic track if you visit Orlando, FL!

Senior Living

As people grow older, where they live becomes a crucial decision that involves more than just finding a place to stay. Senior living isn't just about housing; it's about ensuring comfort, safety, social connections, access to healthcare and personal happiness. Whether its independent living or needing more assistance, like memory support or care, choosing the right option means understanding what each individual needs. It's not just finding a home; it's about creating a place that supports a fulfilling and healthy life for seniors while also offering their loved ones peace of mind and a sense of security.

Prioritizing happiness in the context of senior care involves fostering a holistic approach that considers emotional well-being, engagement and individual fulfillment. It encompasses creating environments where seniors feel valued, respected and empowered to maintain a sense of purpose and joy in their lives. Prioritizing happiness in memory care for seniors facing cognitive decline, such as Alzheimer's and dementia, involves addressing challenges like stigma, diverse individual needs, limited resources and evolving research while focusing on emotional well-being and tailored education. The acknowledgment that no two individuals require identical treatment is fundamental, especially in memory care and assisted living settings. Tailored care, addressing each resident's unique physical, emotional and spiritual needs, holds immense importance. Parenting is an incredible journey filled with rewarding moments and challenges alike. For parents navigating raising children, it's essential to embrace flexibility, patience and open communication. Through a blend of guidance, both from personal experience and licensed experts in the local area, parents can help their kids develop good habits that keep them happy and healthy long after they grow up. Keeping active is a great way for kids to keep healthy. In this generation, there are countless different activities for kids to get involved with, so there is something for everyone. At Play It Forward, a youth sports organization that teaches young athletes multiple sports through the coaching and leadership from high school student-athletes, they recognize the importance of exposing kids to as many activities as possible so they can find something they like.

"One of the most important ways to keep kids healthy and active in today's generation is simply to provide kids with an opportunity to play and have fun. The more kids enjoy a sport or activity, the more likely it is that they will want to continue doing it,” shared Peter Walls, Executive Director of Play It Forward. “I also think it's important for kids to participate in multiple sports and avoid specializing in a sport, especially at a young age. By playing multiple sports young athletes develop different skills, Peter Walls increase their coordination and athleticism, Play It Forward experience different challenges and avoid injury and burnout as they grow older. In addition, playing multiple sports naturally leads to more teammates and ultimately more friends. This has a huge impact on a young person's confidence and overall mental health." Play It Forward is dedicated to cultivating a genuine passion for physical activity among children by offering a diverse range of sports experiences. Beyond the immediate health advantages, the organization aims to foster a sense of joy and camaraderie among young participants. Whether scoring a goal, mastering a new skill or enjoying friendly competition, Play It Forward seeks to establish a positive and enduring connection between children and a variety of sports. If your child wants to specialize in one sport, Matthew Paeth, as the Executive Director of Nebraska USA Wrestling, emphasizes the importance of keeping kids healthy and active by advocating for the sport of wrestling. #PrintProudDigitalSmart

Kids’ health is about activities, doctor’s appointments, education and so much more. Turning kids into healthy adults means instilling good habits such as brushing their teeth daily – something that Pediatric Dental Specialists highly recommends. As a parent, it is important to schedule early dental appointments for your kids to foster a positive relationship with dental care. By providing a vibrant, playful office setting and engaging activities, such as using toys to demonstrate oral care, Pediatric Dental Specialists aims to make these appointments enjoyable for young children. Through these positive experiences, toddlers gradually become more at ease with dental care, cultivating long-term oral health habits that contribute to maintaining a healthy smile as they grow. During your toddler's initial dental visit, one of Pediatric Dental Specialists’ dentists will ask questions about your child’s diet and eating habits. A toddler's first visit will consist of a knee-to-knee exam where the child will sit on the parent's lap for the evaluation, which involves teeth cleaning with a toothbrush and toothpaste. This approach persists until around age three or until the child feels at ease transitioning to a big kid dental chair. As your child becomes more comfortable with subsequent visits, their dentist will gradually introduce dental instruments and polishing paste.

Dr. Ben Reimer

Prior to your toddler’s first visit, Dr. Ben Reimer suggests a few tips to help make dental visits fun. “Role-play dental checkups at home, read dental-themed books, watch engaging videos demonstrating tooth brushing and involve your child in choosing colorful or character-themed toothbrushes, this will help paint dental hygiene in a positive light. It is also important to lead by example by showing enthusiasm for dental care and regular brushing, inspiring your child to adopt healthy habits.”

It is also important to keep on top of eye health with young children. Regular eye check-ups and proper eye care can significantly contribute to their overall well-being. Early detection of any potential vision issues is essential for addressing them promptly and ensuring healthy visual development. Parents and caregivers should be attentive to signs of vision problems in children, such as squinting, rubbing eyes frequently, holding objects very close or complaining of headaches. Another facet of kids’ health is education. At Yellow Brick Road ECDC (YBR), they provide a child-derived curriculum that engages children in their learning and involves them in determining topics of interest. This approach aims to enhance information retention and instill a sense of empowerment, emphasizing that children play a significant role in their education. The curriculum includes hands-on activities, music, movement and "brain breaks" conducted in outdoor classrooms and gyms. Being based in the Midwest, the institution faces weather challenges, but maintains an energetic environment through various activities. Additionally, Yellow Brick Road ECDC offers catered meal options to guarantee fresh, nutritious meals so that teachers can focus on the students themselves. It's never easy to convince a toddler to eat vegetables, but when you have a whole lesson plan on why broccoli makes your bones strong like Superman or makes your cuts heal better like Wolverine or keeps you healthy so you can play longer... you'd be surprised how many toddlers want their broccoli snack!

MAINTENANCE Owning a building, whether for business or residence, involves significant investment and responsibilities. To protect this investment and ensure safety and comfort for clients, employees and family, timely preventive maintenance is crucial. It saves money in the long run, maintains efficiency, reduces energy use and preserves assets. Maintaining stone surfaces in buildings, whether floors or countertops, is essential to preserve their appearance and longevity. While damagedlooking stone might appear beyond repair, professional restoration can often bring it back to life, saving the expense of replacement. However, Lifetime Stone Restoration suggests performing regular maintenance of newly installed or recently restored stone surfaces, as it is more cost-effective than letting them deteriorate and then restoring them later.

Highly trafficked areas on stone floors benefit from periodic one-step polishing to prevent them from becoming worn and dull. According to Owner Don Mlnarik, “Stone has a natural beauty that ceramic or porcelain tiles do not have, but requires more routine maintenance to keep it looking beautiful.”

In bathrooms with stone countertops, preventing mineral deposits from water around faucets is crucial to avoid the Don Mlnarik development of a white haze. Additionally, Lifetime Stone Restoration some stone counters are sensitive to acidic substances present in hand soaps or sanitizers, leading to dulling. Timely restoration when signs of deterioration appear can prevent further damage to the stone.
