Aims and objectives

What are your aims and objectives in providing the regulated activities and locations shown in part 3 of this statement of purpose

Our purpose

St Richard’s Hospice offers free, expert care and support for adults with an illness that cannot be cured, their loved ones and carers.

Our vision

St Richard’s Hospice caring for life together.

Our Shared Values

These values define our relationships with all those we care for and support; our colleagues and the wider community.

Caring:

 Caring is at the heart of everything we do.

 We are inclusive and treat everyone as an individual who we respect and value.

 We take time to listen and respond to the needs of each person.

Compassionate:

 We work with empathy, sensitivity and understanding.

 We are considerate, kind and fair.

 We support and empower individual choice.

Committed:

 We are dedicated, reliable and hard working.

 We continuously strive to deliver high quality services.

 We support each other and work together for the benefit of our patients and loved ones.

Professional:

 We aspire to be the best in everything we do.

 We are innovative and develop our skills through continuous learning and evaluation.

 We take responsibility for our actions and are accountable.

Who do we care for?

We care for people over 18 with an illness that cannot be cured and where complex needs cannot be met by other services. These include cancer and neurological, respiratory, cardiac and renal conditions.

All our services are available to people registered with a South Worcestershire GP. Our In-patient Unit cares for people across Worcestershire. We also care for some people who live outside of Worcestershire if the wish of the patient is to be cared for in Worcestershire for example to be near family or loved ones.

We care for people by:

 Supporting people, their loved ones and carers, to manage their illness and remain independent for as long as possible, giving emotional,

social, practical and spiritual support

 Providing dedicated, individualised palliative and end of life support helping people to control their pain and other symptoms of concern

 Offering support to enable a person to live well through the course of their illness alongside other therapies that are intended to prolong life

 Supporting our patients, loved ones and carers before and through bereavement

 Working in collaboration with our communities to ensure we are inclusive, respect diversity and provide equitable access to meet the needs of our patients, their loved ones and carers.

 Working in partnership with other health care providers and organisations

 Encouraging wider understanding that death and dying is a part of life

 Supporting the local community to be well informed about the care available to them

 Supporting the health and social care workforce through learning and development to provide high-quality, individualised palliative and end of life care

We work closely with our community and hospital colleagues from the NHS, Social Services, local Nursing Homes and voluntary sector providers. All our work enhances the care and support patients and their families receive from other statutory services. St Richard's Hospice is an integral part of the local health care economy in Worcestershire. It is an independent, registered charity, supported by local communities.

Our care is unconditional, non-judgemental and provided free of charge at the point of delivery, regardless of religion or spiritual belief, ethnic origin, disability, sexual orientation or gender identity or social background.

Another aim of our service is to enable patients to have the choice to stay at home where possible, providing our care alongside their own doctors and nurses from the neighbourhood team with the support of St Richard’s teams both at the hospice or in the patient’s own home.

Access to St Richard’s Hospice Services

If patients require St Richard's Hospice assessment, they can be referred by their general practitioner, consultant at the hospital, district nurse or other health care professional. They can also be referred by a relative, key worker, friend or self-refer. All referrals will be processed through the Advice and Guidance service which is the single point of access provided by St Richard’s. Patients are also able to self-refer to hospice services via the Wellbeing Café.

In all cases the patient’s own general practitioner, or key person in charge of a patient’s care, will be informed. At all stages, we will work in partnership with the community teams and acute hospital services involved in the patient’s care. Patients / Clients for whom our service is not suitable will be guided and signposted or referred on to other more appropriate organisations.
