On Monday evening our school choir comprising of Year 2 and Year 3 children joined the choirs of children at St Peter’s 8-13 and St Peter’s 13-18 to sing on stage at the Barbican in York. They sang One Moment, One People, He lives in You, Tequila and You’ve Got a Friend in Me.
My huge thanks to all of the staff who accompanied the children and particular thanks to Mrs Hayden and Mr Miles-Kingston, Director of Music at St Peter’s 13-18 who pulled the whole event together. Finally, thank you to our incredible singers and instrumentalists from Year 2 and Year 3 who performed brilliantly throughout the concert –what a fabulous opportunity for the children at school to sing on stage at such a fabulous venue.
I must admit that few things are more enjoyable than listening to children joining together and collaborating to create beautiful music. Music has been part of human culture for thousands of years and is an important part of our

lives today. Music at St Peter’s plays a vitally important part in our school curriculum across all year groups. It has a myriad of benefits, promoting an understanding of different cultures and can cultivate empathy in children by encouraging them to look at life from new perspectives. Furthermore, exposure to music can have long term benefits such as enhanced mathematical and language skills, early literacy development, improved auditory understanding and increased cognitive development. Music can also help with early socialisation skills, self expression and connectedness. By introducing the basics of music at St Peter’s 2-8 we create an environment where both children and teachers may reap the rewards for years to come. Most importantly it is so much fun, particularly when you perform together in choirs, ensembles and orchestras.
On Thursday we celebrated World Book Day by dressing as our favourite characters from books. We had Matilda’s, Harry Potters, Mr Men, Mary Poppins, Worzel Gummidge, Amelia Earhart, Willy Wonka to name but a few of the very many characters who
had joined us in school. It really was wonderful to witness the fun the children had as they immersed themselves into character for the day. Huge thanks to you all for putting so much effort into preparing the costumes. A special mention must also go to the staff who all looked amazing dressed as their chosen characters from their theme text for the term. Everyone looked fabulous and hopefully this has helped to inspire a love of reading for all.
Today the Friends of St Peter’s 2-8 ran a nearly new uniform shop for parents to make purchases both before and after school. This is a fabulous enhancement for parents/ guardians of children attending 2-8 and my sincere thanks to all those who helped with set-up and ran the shop on the day.
Thank you also for your commiserations for Newcastle’s defeat at Wembley last Sunday. Seb and I had a magical day together, despite the 2-0 loss to Manchester United. Just a reminder that as the temperatures are due to drop once again next week, can I please ask you all to make sure children have their hats and coats with them in school.
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend,

MUSIC
Wow, what a fabulous start to the week we had with the Whole School Concert at the Barbican Centre, York!
I am always amazed at how quickly the children pick up new songs, remember harmony parts and learn all the words and the choir who performed on Monday were no exception. They had a tricky week last week when my voice disappeared, having to really concentrate on their own parts and not be put off by others, all without any help from me!
The choir sang with such confidence, not phased by a different venue or a bigger stage. Mr Miles -Kingston commented at the end of their performance on what a lovely sound they made so a huge well done to every child in our choir. After we were treated to some lovely performance from the pupils at 8-13 and 13-18, it was time for the combined bands and Tequilla!
Our Year 3 instrumentalists definitely stole the show, great playing and even better dancing, they clearly enjoyed every minute of their debut performance with the 13-18 Swing Band and the 8-13 Mini-Jazz Band!
At the end of the concert we all joined together as one school to sing You've Got a Friend in Me. The pupils from the 13-18 Choir gave our pupils such a warm welcome onto the stage, there were lots of smiles and high 5's, the perfect end to a great evening!
Our focus this week is on nursery. We have moved onto gymnastics this half term, learning our fundamental shapes and movements.
In Acorns, we are using animals to describe our movements using key characteristics to create character profiles. Lions and snakes made a feature this week, which the children very much enjoyed.
Conkers looked at our core gymnastic shapes, which we use throughout the school to year 3. This week the children explored the straddle, pike, and tuck positions. The children then performed these by jumping off a bench, combining all the skills together.
We are looking forward to progressing our gymnastics through the term.

CONKERS……...
Once upon a time, in a Nursery far far away there lived some children known as ............. The Conkers! They spent this whole week discovering lots of incredible books, old and new, retelling and creating wonderful stories of their own!
CONKERS……...
WOW what another busy week in Reception!
With World Book Day inspiring our learning this week, the children have been so busy with all things book related. From drawing their favourite characters to acting out storylines from traditional tales. In the junk modelling area, the children have been learning about using tabs and flanges to join their models together. They have made their favourite book characters and even stickman in the forest with the family tree! In our focus skills sessions, we have continued with our woodwork skills learning to use the saw preparing sticks for our Forest School session.
In Phonics we have looked at the sounds ‘air’ and ‘er’ and then consolidated all of the sounds taught this year. Lessons have been full of Disco bingo, climbing the ladder and what’s in the treasure chest?! Our new writing area has been busy with children writing their own stories and working on their speedy spellings.

In Maths, we have continued working with numbers 6, 7 and 8. We have played alien matching games, made playdough spiders, and looked at even and odd numbers.
Down in the forest our World Book Day theme has continued with stickman making and sharing our favourite stories around the log circle.
We were totally blown away by the fantastic costumes on display in Reception on Thursday! From Peter Rabbit to Fantastic Mr Fox to Robin Hood, everyone looked fabulous!
We all enjoyed a fun filled day sharing our favourite stories, talking about different characters and making up our own tales and plays.
Well done to everyone for making such a super effort!

Year One have said a big hello to the 90's!
We have jumped into a new decade of pop, girl power and some other incredible, iconic bands and artists!
This week the children have been discovering about some of the big changes in life in this decade. We have discovered how the Spice Girls were formed and how they dominated the world with girl power - making them the best-selling girl group of all time! We learnt about how each member of the band's name was created and how this linked to their personality and interest. Alongside this girl power, we discovered another rock band that were often described and compared to the next Beatles - this was Oasis. Just like The Beatles, the Year One children were very excited to know that the Oasis band members came from Manchester (it turns out lots of children know Manchester for its airport!). The children drew upon fantastic comparisons and similarities between Oasis and The Beatles including their appearances, song types and even how they performed.
During provision, the children have been exploring graffiti art using spray paint and the how to create their own bubble writing for writing titles. World Book Day arrived on Thursday, and we were all incredibly impressed by the costumes that the children arrived at school in. They all looked AMAZING! It was also delightful to see some of the famous artists from our theme appearing in school. As it was World Book Day, the children have crested and written some of their own books about their favourite book itself or characters. It has been wonderful to see how far the children have progressed with their writing, sentence structure and passion to write. Watch this space for some super authors in the future!
What an action-packed week! Well done, Year One! You are all amazing!
It’s been another exciting week in Year 2 with so much happening!
On Monday the choir headed off to The Barbican to rehearse and then perform with 8-13 and 13-18 choirs. It was so exciting to see the variety and standards of music happening within the next two schools and our choir sang beautifully and enthusiastically, making the Year 2 staff very proud.
We have been building up to Book Day all week and the children have been sending in their photos of them doing Extreme Reading. On Thursday it was the day itself and the children arrived in all manner of imaginative costumes…..whilst Ms Platts came as Stella Starflake Pearl, Miss Jeffrey a unicorn, Mrs Franey an explorer, Mrs Brunton and Mrs Pennels polar bears and Mrs Hall a penguin - all characters from our text this term, The Polar Bear Explorers’ Club.
During the day we learnt about writing instructions, as we made hot chocolates as all good explorers need to do! We had lots of different toppings, such as snow foam and unicorn poo and this led to some very detailed instruction writing!
The Year 2 staff all think that the children need a good rest this weekend as life in school just seems to get busier every day. See you on Monday!
This week our journey has taken us from South America to North America. We explored the Panama Canal and the important role it plays in connecting the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. We then ventured into the wonderful country of Costa Rica. We discovered that Costa Rica is aiming to become one of the first ‘carbon neutral’ countries in the world by helping to protect the forests from cattle ranching and planting new trees.
We explored the layers of the rainforest and were fascinated by the vast array of animals that can be found in each layer. We used our research skills to create a class set of a-Z informative Top Trump cards to help us learn about the animals of the Costa Rican rainforests, including their habitat, classification and diet. One of our favourite animals were sloths, and we were amazed to learn that it takes more up to 2 weeks for a sloth to digest one meal!
